Spring fever

I don’t know about you, but I’m getting spring fever. I’m sitting here in the office, looking longingly out the windows at blue skies and lots of sunshine. But I’m stuck inside writing and doing some editing duties. And blogging — which is fun, but not as much fun as hitting the road.

I’m going to visit some inns in the next couple of weeks for our SE Inns special section in Travel April 10, but I’m itching to go RIGHT NOW. Granted, winter is far from over, and I absolutely know that sometimes March in the ATL can be brutal. But I’m planning. Are you?

Where are you planning to make some quick escapes come spring (or even before). I’d like to know what are some of your favorite nearby getaways.

As my daughter would say, “Holla.” I’m waiting to hear from you.

You just cant beat the Florida Panhandle or even St. Simons Island for a quick getaway in the spring. Sure, Cap Jaluca is fantastic, and you will always love the Caymans, but for a fast trip, enjoy it close!

Ha, ha, ha. I took the cure for spring fever in Sarasota the past few days, while poor Paula was stuck in the office. Aren’t we lucky in Georgia to live so close to sunny and warm Florida? And I’m luckier still to have use of a house in Sarasota while my husband’s sister and her family travel with Ringling’s Hometown Edition circus. They’re headed to Wichita, Kan., right now, and getting to see much of the West this year. I have twinges of envy for their constant travels, but I’m also aware they’re working very hard and sometimes don’t have enough free time to see everything they’d like to see before heading to the next city. Meanwhile, I’m getting to see more of Sarasota, now that we’re not spending as much time on family visiting.

I’m thinking about taking another trip up into the middle of Arkansas (yeah, that’s kind of weird for vacation), staying in a little town called Russellville, enjoying some quiet time in the Ozarks, and stopping by Hot Springs national park on the way home…

Hear, hear, Peter! Arkansas gets such a bum rap, but I’ve had several never-before, no-place-else experiences there! We stayed in a little motel right on the highway near Jasper overlooking the Grand Canyon of Arkansas.

A life-long birder, I was thrilled to see my first Indigo Bunting and Scarlet Tanager. The restaurant on top of the motel had several hummingbird feeders and that was all the entertainment we needed. It was hilarious to see the tanager buzz the hummers just to tick them off! The rooms were underneath, so there was no highway noise.

We stayed in Eureka Springs at the 1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa. These folks have been tubbing and rubbing for over a century and they’ve got it DOWN! It’s a darling little Victorian town, but not so little that Willie Nelson’s not coming March 8th.

It’s really amazing to visit the old Bathhouse Row in Hot Springs. You hear all the jokes about hillbillies and all, but it is the only state capitol that is a National Park! I did the whole nine yards there in the historic bath. The massage was especially nice, as the room had the window open to the cliff behind us and I could hear bird-song while I was getting all the kinks worked out.

It was a step back in time to see all the locals filling their jugs at the public font downtown. It is literally the cleanest water on earth - NASA chose it to preserve the rocks collected on the moon! It is so delicious, too! No sulphury taste or odor. The store across the street sells empty jugs so you can take some with you, too.

We love Destin for a weekend getaway (we squeeze in an extra day now and then). The beaches are snowy white, the water the most beautifule emerald green imaginable and first rate restaurants and shopping. Our favorite getaway in spring and fall.
