Should Caroline Kennedy have withdrawn?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Caroline Kennedy has withdrawn her bid to be appointed U.S. Senator from New York.
Her campaign began with popular support but withered quickly over criticism about her experience and her reluctance to answer questions about her finances.
“I informed Governor Paterson today that for personal reasons I am withdrawing my name from consideration for the United States Senate,” she said in the one-sentence statement.
Do you think she did the right thing?
Do you think she was treated unfairly by the press?
Would she have made a good senator?

She might have made a good senator, but now we will never know.
There are several well-qualified New Yorkers for the position.
I think she did the right thing.

First, she would not have been the first senator with no prior political office experience so this compliant by the Rethuglicon butt-sniffers was a red herring. Second, she went on a big high profile campaign to get people to support her, now she drops out for “personal reasons.” That’s not a good way to build political relationships. If she wants a future in politics, her withdrawal has done a lot of damage. She should have stayed in the running.

New York politics is a sham . She had no buiseness even being considered. Im so sick of people treating the Kenedys like royalty. And like the Kings there own children will be the undoing of there legacy.

What a worthless question. How are we to know if she did what was right for herself when you make no attempt to explain why she did it. All we know from this story is she did it for personal reasons. So you’re asking what exactly? If that’s a valid reason to withdraw? Personal reasons sounds like somebody has something on her. If there’s a story, it’s in the why she did it.

How would you like a New Yorker giving you his opinion on Saxby or Johnny? Meaningless opinion.
That said, she—like ever Kennedy before and after her—is unfit for public office.

She probably withdrew her name because Paterson really did not want to nominate her!! The poor woman just is challenged in public speaking. One can only get by for just so long with YOU KNOW! Can also assure that she was not necessarily the choice of the Clintons!

Well, from what I hear, she publicly dropped out because Patterson wasn’t going to pick her. Trying to save face it seems. All New Yorkers (and Americans) should be thankful after this little selfish show that Governor Patterson had the good judgment to not pick her.

It is obvious she did not want to follow the financial disclosure laws. She did not as a worker for the New York schools and said she would only after she was appointed Senator. There’s something she does not want the public to know.

She would have been no more than a Yes person for Uncle Teddy Pooh Bear Kennedy. She wold have never been consdiered if name had not been Kennedy. Obama might be able to do something if we could also get rid of several other senators as he will wihtin 100 days pee off democratic party and they will bow up to show him wyho is in control. I don’t think Obama will ever have a complete opportunity to show what he might be able to do.

I think that she is probably up for an appointment in the Obama administration…something that has probably been on the table all the time… she has nothing to hide on financial disclosure…most assets are under protection of Kennedy family trusts which do not have to be detailed… who really wants to bare all their financials unless really necessary and for an important reason… board of education in a city would not qualify..

I agree with some of the comments above about Kennedy but if you closed your eyes and listened to Gov. Patterson…..
Does not Gov. Patterson remind you of Dr. Evil when he talks ? How he says one thing, then changes his mind or interjects soemthing that is totally off base or confusing too most…..but humorous. Maybe he hasn’t gotten his highest bid price yet ? hehehe

She will probably take another post in the Obama administration….something that was probably already on the table… as to her financials, the board of education job did not warrant going through such a financial disclosure as the Senate.. she has nothing to hide…most assets are in Kennedy trusts and protected from detailed analysis..

It all has to do with Edward Kennedy and the snub he gave Hillary Clinton in her presidential bid. I’m sure she would have thumbed her nose at Caroline’s efforts. But besides that, after watching “Charlie Wilson’s War”, I have no idea what these elected idiots do for us anyway!

Is anyone really that surprised? Her lack of enthusiasm was apparent and after her dog-and-pony tour where she attempted to “reach out,” I think she realized it just wasn’t worth it to her. Then she got blistered by the press because she isn’t very well-spoken. Her heart simply wasn’t in it, we could all see that. Now she is finally admitting that fact to herself.

Kennedy absolutely did the right thing by withdrawing, as she never should have “throw her hat in the ring” to begin with. Being a (faux) aristocratic “blueblood” doesn’t qualify one for Congress. I suspect it was a combination of the DNC wanting to leverage her “star” power & her own ego that drove her to (initially) pursue the Senate seat. In any event, she was grossly underqualified & has no business on “Crapitol sHill”. That being said, about 75-85% of the Congress (there now) has no business being there (either)!!!

The oldest prejudice in the world, and only one in this country that still gets sanction is the one against women. This is the first Kennedy in my lifetime who’s qualifications have been questioned. Several of her male cousins who were not qualified to serve on a PTA board have been appointed and elected to office without question. It is sad that women, even one’s who do prove themselves worthy of a seat at the table are denied access. Just ask Hillary, Geraldine, Sarah and Elizabeth.

I haven’t really heard that much about Caroline over the years since she seems to have shunned the limelight. However, I do wonder if maybe she, like Hillary Clinton & the secretary of state post, thought that maybe it would just be handed to her because of who she is. I was truly surprised when Hillary accepted Obama’s offer. Then again, maybe Caroline just decided it would be more of a hassle than she wanted to deal with.
