McCain names Palin as running mate

Republican candidate John McCain has named Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate for the White House.

McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, made the announcement at a Ohio rally that drew an estimated 15,000 people. Speculation had swirled for weeks that McCain would select former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney or Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut.

But McCain selected a woman in a clear attempt to lure disillusioned Hillary Clinton voters.

The Republicans would go against the Democratic rivals Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Last night, Obama, in a historic moment, formally accepted the Democratic nomination before an estimated 80,000 people in Denver.

What do you think about a McCain-Palin ticket?

Did he make the right choice? Does it influence your decision whether or not to vote for the Republican ticket?

Wow! Talk about throwing the election a curve ball! Just looked her up on wikipedia.org. Palin is a shark and an inspiration to women long before this development. I had some reservations about McCain being another GWB. But obviously that is not the case. What happened to the status quo white male republican. What a great pick!

John McCain just assured his victory in November. With Sarah he as a Vice President that will stand beside him as a partner that will only make America stronger. Now we can sit back and watch the MSM try and tear her apart like they did to Hillery but it wont work this time.

We as a Nation are ready for either a woman or an African American as our leaders. It however this woman and not that African American.

This retired Marine stands strongly beside the McCain-Palin ticket.

Good move. She is young, female, a strong conservative, and it’s hard to find fault with her. She adds youth and diversity to the McCain ticket. Dems weren’t expecting this, so they don’t have their critisisms ready, not to mention, they’re more afraid of critisizing a female. They’ve been poring over Romney’s and other candidates’ backgrounds to find fault, and they were totally unprepared for this. Smart choice.

This pandering is so obvious.

McCain’s main argument against Obama is his lack of experience, yet he chooses someone who has less than two years of experience as Governor.

If McCain dies, this woman will become President. Is that something she can handle?

Unfortunately, I don’t think the general public is intelligent enough to see what McCain is doing here.

She is a first term Governor (2 years in office) before that she was a city council woman and mayor in Alaska. As old and as feeble as McCain is, he could sneeze too hard and this woman will have come out of nowhere and become president.

He did this thinking that he would capture unhappy Hillary women, but they are just making noise. No way will they vote for candidates who will reverse Roe v Wade to say nothing of what they can do to the Supreme Court.

John McCain just delivered this election to Obama.

Who is this Palin? Governor of Alaska? What a challenging role that must be .

A gun toting ultra conservative women. Yea, that hits home with the middle class!?!? NOT!

McCain clearly needed to play to his weakness which is the economy - Romney was the person to correctly balance the ticket.

I had recently made up my mind to vote for McCain but have gone back to undecided with this selection.

While she has strong conservative credentials, the big question is going to be if she has enough experience for a position that is a heart beat away from the presidency… and let’s face it, with McCain’s health, that becomes a large issue.

Her governing experience is less than two years as governor of a state with a population less than that of the City of Charlotte and before that the mayor of a town of 8,000. She receives high marks for her performance in both jobs but being President of a superpower that has over 300,000,000 people is quite a different task than what she has experienced so far. She likely would have been a better pick eight to twelve years from now.

Will she be good for the ticket? It’s way too early to know for sure but this choice certainly makes things much more interesting.

Palin has been on the list for months. Several articles months ago were published about her as the MCCain’s VP, even BEFORE Hillary officially lost to B.HusseinObama. McCain obviously has had this on his list for a long time and I am happy to see it.

McCain Palin - Absolutely! This did it!

Even if he picked the best VP candidate of all time I still couldn’t bring myself to vote for another republican. She’s the governor of Alaska and wants to build the biggest natural gas pipeline in the world, but they say she’s tough on big oil. WHATEVER! Washington wants her in pocket so they can pillage Alaska’s resources. As for Gov. Palin she seems like a strong woman and I am all for strong women figuring out a way to have it all. However, she just had her 5th child a few months ago who has down syndrome. How is she going to campaign with 5 children and home and a special needs child???

Now you are cheering this choice… rally you have got to be kidding me. There is no way this person should be a heartbeat away from being president. O.K, let me understand something, Barack is not experienced enough to be President but this “first” term govenor is (in the event that something should happen to the McCain). Another bad judgement call in a long list for McCain. Barack should be thrilled….McCain just handed him the presidency. And why not chose Condoleezza Rice? A black woman with experience in world affairs?

Although we all know it is a ploy, the GOP is just plain brilliant. Once Obama picked Biden, me and my husband discussed how McCain would choose a woman to cash in on all the disgruntled Hillary supporters and lo and behold, he did. The dems are completely ridiculous. Superdelegates?, slapping Michigan and Florida in the face, not choosing the person with 18 million votes…… It’s like an awful circus show and everyone should be fired. I am an independent turned dem turned independent. I really wish I could support the GOP just for their pure intelligence and logic (I am however strongly against the war). I don’t always agree with their decisions but they are always executed flawlessly. The dems have a lot to learn.

Am not sure what to think of his choice. It really came out of left field. I do understand why he did not choose Condoleza Rice as she is so closely associated to Bush and Iraq. This choice is either a brilliant move or a big disaster. I think I will wait to find out more about her. I do think we need to vote based on the issues and not the choice of VP. This will be an exciting 2 months.

A smart move by McCain to woo the woman voters, however, extremely hypocritical. A woman who has only a few years experience, conservative brings little room to grow as a nation (which we desperately need). I don’t know about anyone else, but personally I would like to be able to go to sleep without worrying that I won’t be able to afford to heat my house, pay my college/master loans, and that my child is going to be supported. I do not live above my means, but my means are being sucked dry by policies that don’t care.

Let’s see if I have it right, Some of you are complaingin about Mccain’s pick because of lack of experience. Hmmmm. Obama has never sponsored or co-sponsored any amendments before the senate, state or federal, has missed 4 out of 5 votes in the Senate. And has nothing to offer but a phrase.

Palin, has wiped out corrupt politicians in Alaska, Pro-gun, Pro-Life, against big oil. Hmmm

And you have doubts this will be a landslide. Pull the dark glasses off, cause you’re not blind. This was a great move.

Wow!!! So McCain picks a woman to so-called get the Hillary vote. How disrespectful and arrogant to think that women are so stupid they will vote for anyone who has a (vj).

Hillary is defenately a valid candidate for president or vice president. Not because she is a woman but because she is quaified and experienced. Can’t say the same about McCains choice.

Didn’t McCain say he was about substance? Then why is he pulling this stunt? Make you wonder….more of the same.

I think Barack’s chances of going into the White House just grew astronomically. Thanks GOP. I never thought I’d see the day when a black man became president. We owe it all to you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

For the people jumping at this, you might want to go and check out her record for the state of Alaska. She has gone against waisted spending, shut down earmarks, gone against corruption, and she is for less government, lower taxes, more drilling along with (and thats the statement along with) energy conservation and new fuels. You know I think finally we might be heading in the right direction. I was really looking but I do like this choice. She is much much more for America and the people then any of the other candidates. It’s great to see truth spoken here; THAT THE ONLY REASON THIS WOMAN IS A VP PICK IS TO STEAL WOMEN VOTERS AND NOT THAT SHE CAN ACTUALLY RUN THE COUNTRY.

So… “experience” is a big deal, yet you place an individual with 2 years of experience and 44 years old one heartbeat from the presidency?? You can’t be serious John..You will be exposed even more now. Good thing Barack is well versed in running against a female opponent. I am stupified at the “Conservative” Republican thought process. How can anyone with even a modicum of intelligence look at the current situation in this country and still hold on to their “conservative” beliefs? I used to be a “Conservative” Republican, but washed my hands of the whole thing following “W’s” fist term in office. I’m disgusted that I ever used to think that way.

All of you people who consider themselves “Conservative” should really look into your hearts and ask yourself why you feel that way, is because you believe that deep down in your hearts that what has been going on is right or that you’ve just been told that’s how you’re supposed to think. I’m not a “Christian”, but I know from everything I’ve been taught that your Jesus would never support your idealology in a million years. He would be in there with the Democrats doing whatever he could to ease human suffering and furthering the idea that if we help each other we will make this nation stronger.

It’s a desperate pick. He could pick Romney because of the animosity generated between the two in the primary.

I hope the McCain campaign plans on giving up the whole, “He isn’t experienced” mantra. Palin has been on the “national” scene (if you can call governor of Alaska “national”) for less than 2 years. They picked her because

1) she’s a woman 2) she’s young 3) she pleases the conservative base.

That was such a fantastic choice. Pure genius. Why anyone says they are changing thier vote is beyond me??? What in the world, are you all against a strong woman with opinions? She is highly intelligent, she is a female, and she is young, so that makes her input even that much more vital! If the woman can handle all the challenges life has handed her and be this productive, shame on anyone for doubting her. She has been on the list of possible running mates, but no one gave her any attention at all because they were stuck on Romney-shame on anyone doubting this phenomenal duo. Everyone saying you are changing your votes, you need to do a bit of reading and research, and stop listening to one news channel for all of your information. The media is biased. You have to do some digging to get all the facts, and if you are too lazy to do that, then leave your vote where it belongs, in a mock election!

McCain and this lady must be insane… she just had a baby last year with a disability. How in the world does she plans on juggling the job of caring for the baby and focus on being the VP. McCain had a good idea in selecting a female; however, he should have chosen a qualified female. I think McCain is a good man, but he is surely out of touch with the real world. Women have worked to hard in the country toward equity to have some retired beauty queen to be placed on ticket overlooking other qualified women. I voted for Obama on Super Tuesday and will surely be voting for him again in November. The great thing about America is that we do not have to agree (except if you GW Bush). We have focused too much on who is good and who is wrong in this campaign. The Bible explains to us that none is good but the Father. God will be the final decider in this election. Due note that the good word tells us that the first will be last and the last will be first. Those of you who have read their Bible understand exactly what I am referring to in my statement.

Well, I’d rather have someone taking “on-the-job” presidential training as a VP with previous executive experience rather than as President with no previous executive experience. This will be great. She does have some executive experience, is a Washington outsider (which seems to be what most people want) and if the time comes that she has to step in as president she will have had time as VP to gain more experience and guidance and will still have McCains people around her for support. McCain’s experience/knowledge + Palin’s non-Washington insider status, ideas, youth = victory

What is McCain drinking on? What are his advisors drinking on? So if anything were to happen to McCain as president THIS is the choice we are left with? Jesus take the wheel! She was a beauty queen and has only been governing Alaska for 2 years! Alaska! Alaske! Not a Florida, Texas, New York, Ohio, but ALASKA! So what experience does she have. If you wanted a woman are you telling me this was the most qualified Republican woman? Jesus take the wheel! I am utterly DISSAPPOINTED and will more than likely either not vote or vote Obama. McCain should have NEVER been the nominee in the first place and the he pulls this STUPID stunt. Heck, at least Hillary had some experience and seemed competent enough to do the job. All I can do is shake my head in DISGUST!

The very first important decision that comes from a candidate for president is that of his running mate. This person must be ready at any minute to become the president. Who would you feel better with? Coming from an indepedent i would say that Barack made the correct choice and John did not. He just gave the election to the democrats. Just to pick a VP because she is a women is pandering to the Hillary voters. Hillary actually had ideals, and and agenda. Palin was quoted as saying that she “does not even know what the VP does”

Not a good first choice!!!!

Hahaha!!! Yes repubs go ahead…fall in line and pretend like you’re happy with this choice. We know you’re not and everyone knows you’re doing it to save your conservative face because that’s exactly how you all operate.

This was a desperation and pandered choice on behalf of McCain and most intelligent people can see that. Repubs have bashed Obama on the inexperience angle the entire campaign season, so McCain goes out and chooses a person with even less experience and does nothing to shore up his lack of experience??? Wow!

Have any of you read her bio or know anything about her? If you had, you wouldn’t be on here shouting with glee. Yes, she will appeal to people, but those are people that intended to vote repub anyway…ultra-conservatives. McCain’s not going to win any new voters with this choice (even though she’s a female). In fact, women should be insulted because it’s obvious she’s being used as a pawn to pander to women. That’s what repubs do, play to the least common denominator. shakes head If it’s not the fear angle, it’s the “hey look at me…I have a woman on my ticket” angle. LOL!!

Please get your collective heads out of the clouds and make sure you show up here after the debates begin!!!

This is a response to Mike who quoted me

Yeah, I mean Alaska is no Arkansas (Clinton) or New Hampshire (Dean).

God knows it doesn’t match Obama’s lengthy record.

You’re absolutely right it’s not Arkansas (Clinton) or New Hampshire (Dean). It doesn’t compare to those states in anyway.

NH -Population Ranked 41st in the US Total 1,315,828 (2007 est.) 1,235,786 (2000)

Arkansas - Population Ranked 32nd in the US - Total 2,834,797 (2007 est.)

Alaska - Population Ranked 47th in the US - Total 683,478 (2007 est.)

You’re absolutely right, she governed a place ranked 47th in population. Doesn’t take much to govern. I will not be apart of another mistake, not this time. I will be casting my ballot for Obama this time. Obama + Biden has a far greater experience in the economy than the lack of knowledge that McCain has admitted too and goodness…the 2 years experience that she’ll bring to the table.

If there was any doubt that McCain is out of touch, this choice confirms that McCain doesn’t get it. Poor McCain, he still thinks that this election is about LOOKS. So he chooses a beauty queen. He thinks the same process that goes into vice presidential selection is one that’s he used to pick his prop (the wife). Well, McCain. It’s not about looks it’s about work experience, knowledge and good judgment. If he had chosen Condoleezza Rice—well okay. But a first-time 1 and 1/2 year Gov from a state the size of Macon, GA. McCain. This is slap to all accomplished, professional women! McCain just doesn’t get!

I was leaning toward Obama untill he picked Biden. Then I was looking more and more into McCain’s policies to see if he would be a better choice. However, with this pick for VP it really looks like he picked someone to fit a puzzle. A woman to draw Clinton Supporters, Pro-life to bring in conservatives, and someone with oil experinece to help with offshore drilling. She was a mayor, then an employee of a natural gas company, then governor for two years. The fact that McCain is old and has a history of cancer makes her likelihood of getting to the Presidency scary as heck. I’ll continue to look but I’m much more likely to vote for O’Bama with this choice.

I understand this is all strategic. McCain is trying to leveraged the playing field by attempting to pull at the heart-strings of women voters. He had so many choices to choose from… so many solid leaders within the republican party that could have solidified he candidancy for president. Does he care about the country or does he only care about winning at any cost w/ the american people picking up the bill? Obama may not have much washington experience, but he chose someone who does… he chose someone who could challenge & balance him and make his administration stronger and McCain chose someone who could possibly help him win a few votes and not help his administration. he may not want her to help within his administration ideals and may just relegate her to small duties. i’m not impressed, but i was hoping for a solid vp choice; no disrespect to his choice, becuz i think she is lovely. i guess we can’t call obama out of experience anymore.

As an Independent, I’ve been waiting for a sign … from either party. Obama’s speech was enlightening, just not in a good way. It is becoming ever more apparent that he is a Socialist with a silver tongue. Not to mention the audacious marketing blitz that was the finale of the DNC. I mean, is the guy running for PUBLIC office or performing a half-time show at the Super Bowl. This does not impress me, in fact, it reminds me of televangicals, with their fanatical ideals and persuasive speech patterns that makes everyone drink more Koolaide.

McCain has his issues, too. But, Palin is exciting. I’ve known about her for almost a year and have been quite impressed — although she is pro-life and I’m not. She is the average family (unlike Obama or McCain). She doesn’t just talk the talk, she is for fiscal responsibility, ethics (which Washington has very little of at the moment) and domestic energy.

I’ve been waiting for something, and this was it … the sweet smell of V-I-C-T-O-R-Y! Well, maybe now, the media will actually have someone to oogle over and stop making doe eyes everytime the talk about Obama - it really is getting old.

We need REAL CHANGE in Washington, not just Obama’s rhetoric of style and no substance.

Besides, she’s a mom of 5 who is running the state of Alaska and her home. She knows how to juggle things and to stand up for herself.

Obviously McCain does not think inexperience is a major factor since he (a 74-year-old) is picking a woman with 2 YEARS experience as the person one step from the Oval Office. I’m just wondering if all you people who think that because McCain is in his 70’s that he is about to drop dead are in your 20’s or 30’s? Good Lord, now days people in their 70’s are very active. Yeah, I used to think 70 was ancient back when I was in my 20’s and 30’s. But now that I just turned 50, it isn’t looking that old now… Besides JFK was a young man when he was assasinated so the age thing is irrelevant.

However, should something actually happen to McCain, with the right advisors in place Gov. Palin would do a great job. And the fact that she doesn’t have Washington experience makes it even better because she might actually go in and do something.

Obama’s speech with all the wonderful things he was going to do for everyone was a bunch of rhetoric. Why hasn’t he done it already? Congress is the one who effects legislation and change.

I was thinking it was going to be Romney as McCain’s running mate but this could turn out to be a fantastic choice.

She is not a party line supporter and actually stands for something rather than pandering such as the Dems platform of “no more Bush”.

Above that she has more experience leading than the Dems PRESIDENTIAL candidate, combine that with McCain’s leadership ability and you have a clear choice to lead this nation back to the status we deserve.

fascinating choice.

i am a conservative, and believe this choice is perfect in our day and time, as it isn’t about leadership or issue position, but rather on glitz, glamor, and political correctness.

obama/clinton would have been unbeatable.

mccain/romney would have been same old story of rich white guys.

it is going to be interesting to see how the issue of being young and inexperienced goes now. both parties have it. did mccain lose one of his biggest clubs by chosing palin? will obama attack saying that if mccain dies in office, we get a rookie, running the risk of it bouncing back on him as a rookie starting out in the oval office?

like i said… fascinating.

You guys are kidding yourself to think John McCain choose this woman because of her political body of work. Please this is another poor attempt to” just win” another election…by hook or by crook. This is nothing more than a strategic move. Bush did the same thing to win or steal his last election by pulling on the heart strings of fearful Americans (by making us feel he is the only candidate at the time qualified to keep America safe from terrorist attacks and to find Osama Bin Laden).

Little did we know he had no intentions of finding Osama. Anyway, for all of the self righteous Republicans that can only see past their wallets and not see the ailments of this nation….I pray that the Democrats win this election.

Plus, she placed herself as someone who goes AFTER Geraldine Ferraro and Hillary Clinton. The soundbites are going tobe brutal.

A young governor with executive experience; a Mom with five kids — one enlisted in the US Army, and another with Downs Syndrome — ; a husband who is a member of the union; a true Washington outsider; a woman who is intelligent and TOUGH; a reformer; a conservationist; and wants this country to become energy independent!!

Sure that there are many Democrats who heard her speak in Dayton were asking themselves, “WHY DID WE NOT HAVE HILLARY ON THE TICKET?” Think that the Democrats have — once again — outsmarted themselves.

Senator John McCain has made an outstanding choice in Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska. Governor Palin is strong for America and will be strong in Georgia and the South. Her strong pro-life principles will be well received across Georgia. More then that, her common sense approach to the energy crisis and her support for drilling for oil is what America needs. Governor Palin is a lifetime member of the NRA and strong supporter of free market capitalism.

By picking a strong conservative, Senator McCain has ensured that Georgia will deliver its electoral votes for the Republican ticket. Georgia conservatives are very excited to welcome Governor Palin to our state; we are fired up to win Georgia for the McCain-Palin ticket.

So what if Alaska is sparsly populated. Does that mean she cannot lead. More people, better leader?

Alaska’s population is over 670,000. Macon Ga is barely over 97,000.

Sarah has been in politics of some kind since 1992. Obama since 1997.

If Gov. Palin were a man, she would be just another inexperienced pro-life, big oil creationist republican governor — she would be George Bush. A “Hillary supporter” helping to elect Gov. Palin to higher office would be an affront to everything Senator Clinton believes in as a Democrat and as a public servant. Gov. Palin is the anti-Hillary.

Of all the experienced Republican females McCain could have selected as a running mate, he chose a neophyte to placate the the conservative right. When the phone rings at 3:00 am, she won’t be ready. Most of Hillary’s fan base will not associate with her views on social issues. This may be the best news that Obama’s had today.

I think it is an attempt to do a few things. Pull in possible swing Hillary supporters. Shore up women conservative voters in general. Appease the oil and gas industries and assure them they still have a good friend in the White House. Have a staunch anti-choice candidate to ensure all the votes from the anti-choice crowd. Get all the NRA gun-toting crowd’s vote as well. Really, who knows if the tactic will work. Right now, McCain has a tough uphill battle to win in November regardless of what any poll says. The 1st week of November should be very interesting indeed!

It so funny to read the libs response on this. They claim this takes the “experience” charge against Obama off the table. So if thats true, then Obama picking Biden (who has been in Washington longer than McCain) must take the “change” argument off the table. Right? The political spin on this is hilarious. Both candidates pandered to try and help themselves win. Thats the bottom line. The both picked who they thought was more politically promising. Its almost as bad as the photo op of Obama bowling. I wish you partisan hacks would dig your heads out of the sand and realize that neither party is in this for you, they are in it for the power and their special interests.

So McClain picked a woman…whoop-de-do…NOT. Not that there’s anything wrong with that…just the wrong woman in this case. What bothers me most about the whole vice president scenario in both parties, is that the candidate presumptive (with perhaps the advice of his advisors) picks the v-p candidate on the basis of who can draw votes. This person is “one heart beat away” from the presidency, folks. Let’s have stronger criteria or involve the public or convention in the choice. I don’t know who in the heck I’m voting for in Nov.

I LOVE this pick! She is big time conservative, young, aggressive, smart, a WOMAN governor (exec). I saw some news on her and some film of a speech early this year when she was battling her Democrat state congress on oil and energy, and she WAS KILLING THEM, just absolutely drilling them with a LAZER like cannon arguments. She’s got an attack dog mentality for tax and spend liberals, and very strong yet feminine and attractive. Very smart. I love this pick. She is THE model for what the first women Vice president should be, and ultimately WHAT the first female President SHOULD BE.

This ticket makes McCain look even MORE experienced over weak weaj Obama, as it is what a ticket should be, EXPERIENCE at the top, and young, smart, dynamic future Star underneath. The Dems have it exactly backwards!

Do we really want her to possibly (highly probable) be Prez when he croaks?? C’mon!!!She is easy on the eyes, so at least it makes seeing her more palatable. McCain won’t be here in 4 years. ‘08 Democrat = Inexperience on top of the ticket (Obama) and 30+ years of experience on the bottom of ticket (Biden) so you have someone who comes in the door Jan. 09 weak. Republicans - Experience on top (McCain) and at least some experience on the bottom (Palin). If you read her bio she carved a pathway for herself to excel and must have the right stuff to beat out the “good ole boys “ in Alaska. McCain and Palin are people who have “proven” records that they will not allow their party to dictate their decisions and this is what this country needs. Remember that the Democrats have the majority in both the House & Senate.

I am an African American male who had not yet decided who to vote for. I became disgusted with the mobs of people who were voting for Obama simply because of his race and the desire to see history made in their lifetimes. My plan was to decide which topics were of great importance, watch the debates closely, and make a decision that was independent of race or political affiliation.

That being said, I feel that this VP choice was an awful decision. McCain has bashed Obama repeatedly for having a lack of experience (which is one of my concerns about Obama), but then turns around and names a VP who has been a GOVERNOR in Alaska for less time than Obama has been campaigning for president. This choice effectively negates his future attacks on Obama’s lack of experience and sets the campaign back.

I will definitely stick to my plan and scrutinize the presidential debates, but I must admit that this VP choice is a strike against the McCain campaign.

* Five Women Walk! Here is what I want to see at the Republican Convention. A Five Women Walk. Remember Charlies Angles? Buffy? A ton of TV Hero shows where the show opened with the Hero’s walking into the Camera ready for a battle? Well, would that not be perfect on stage at the Convention. Sarah at point. Condi and someone. Kaye Hutchenson and two more in the third row. All marching towards center stage, all marching towards the camera. All evidencing decades of education and experience. All part of the NEW WORLD ORDER where WOMEN will have a real voice. ALL WORKING TO shatter the glass ceiling Hillary only cracked. WONDERFUL. They could actually also have five men. They could meet at center state. But the symbolism would be stunning. The Five Women Walk would be on every news magazine and in every cover story over and over and over. Will they do it? Right up front I am an Obama supporter 100% of the way. But I came out of Denver last night with a uneasy feeling that the republicans could really go for gold on the experience issue. Who would have thought within 12 hours they would have shot themselves in the foot, actually not one foot but both feet. In one fell swoop the age issue is front and center, from being “politically incorrect” to discuss to realizing the oldest person to ever be nominated for a first tern has now picked someone whose claim to fame is mayor of an Alaskan village and 2 years as governor. So in essence what we have is a democratic ticket with a presidetial nominee who has 8 years in the IL state legislature and 4 years in the US Senate with a running mate with 30+ years in Congress as compared to a 72 year old candidate with a running mate with zero experience. It’s as if the republicans never learner anything from the Harriet Meyers disaster. You have to actually begin to think that the McCain operation thinks the American public is just plain stupid. So the Dems didn’t pick Hillary so they are going to vote for anybody? Why not go with someone like Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Texas stays red and she’s an accomplished politician. Absolutely astounding.

An excellent pick…as to experience:

“Compromise is an absence of leadership”…it may have been Churchill who said this, but I cannot recall who it was. In the Senate you compromise, as the Governor of a state, you have to lead if you are going to be successful. Her 2 yrs as Governor trumps O’s 4 yrs in the Senate.

This pick won’t win over hard core Hillary voters, it will will over independents. This election is about those 40% independents, not the 30% conservatives and 30% libs out there.

Those of you like Nick who question her creds:

  • She has begun cleaning up the corruption in Alaskan politics. Too bad she couldn’t stop those 2 corrupt Republican losers (Stephens & Young) from running for reelection.

  • She wants to Drill Baby, Drill, but has stood up to big oil when deals were not good for her state.

  • She has had to deal w/Russia (fishing, tunnel) and Canada (Fishing/Energy) issues. I would say that trumps sitting in the Senate and second guessing your president for over 2 decades (Biden).

As a governor, you are likely to make more decisions in a day than your entire career in the Senate.

W/that said, this conservative has a hard time accepting McCain, (McCain-Feingold restricts all of our political speech and hands it over to the media at crunch time in the elections), but this is a sound pick that will resonate w/independents and reinforces his “maverick” credentials.

McCain 52%, Obama 48%, Dems keep control of Congress, but do not get to that magic number of 60 in the Senate.

Have a happy and safe Labor Day everyone!

I don’t care that McCain picks a women and I am a women I care about the fact that people are still so blinded in their thinking to think it is a good idea to put another republican in office for another 4 years. Come on people have you not been living in the USA for the past 8 years? Have you not been watching and hearing about this senseless war our families are fighting in and getting killed over? Have you not been going to the gas station to get gas and seeing how crazy the gas prices are? How many of you or your family memebers/friends lost jobs or homes because of the aweful state of the economy? I don’t care how rich you are or how much money you make everyone has felt the crunch of the past year or so if not the last 8 years. Then to think people want to put another republican in office that is nothing more than a Bush clone has me floored over here.

Then someone touched on it and I am glad they did, with all the christians that supposedly back the republicans, how can you be a true christian and see that everything the republicans stand for goes against everything that God stands for?!!?!!

Are people that tied to being republican that they will vote for another 4 years of the horror we have been through? If you haven’t been touched personally by what is going in our country in the past 8 years, elect another republican with the same views and values as Bush and in the next 4 years I assure you that you will!!!!

So the next time you republicans are upset that your loved one is going over to fight in a senseless war remember who made that possible. When financially you can’t support your family anymore because of high gas prices, job loss or the HUGE deficit we are in then remember who you have to thank for that.

So that fact that McCain picked a women doesn’t bother me and I could careless about her experience, I care that we will suffer through another 4 years of what we are already going through. So those that have the power to vote, do so for CHANGE no matter the color or gender of the candidates. We NEED CHANGE FOR THE BETTER!!!!!!

Let’s keep our eye on the ball - there is only one question we Democrats want to ask Governor Palin: if you become President in the next few years, which policies of the Bush-Cheney administration would you continue, and which policies would you discontinue or substantially alter?

So McCain picks as his VP someone just had a state ethics investigation started against her last month for apparently abusing her power as Governor to get her sister’s ex-husband fired from the Alaska State Police.

Wow. That is a bold move.

She’s an average American. She’s the working mother. She wants us to drill in her state for oil. Her son is being deployed to Iraq.

As a woman, I wouldn’t have voted for Hillary. But I’ll vote for Palin!

Three things:

  • Gov. Palin was chosen as McCain’s VP because she is a woman, and McCain ostensibly thinks that all Hillary voters want is a woman in the White House regardless of her policies.

  • The choice of Gov. Palin as VP is an insult to all American women. There is certainly no shortage of qualified female Republican politicians from whom he could have chosen, but he had to go and choose a woman with two years of political experience. and none of it in Washington. There goes the “Obama’s inexperienced” argument.

  • Based on the above two points, McCain clearly thinks that all he needs is a portable vagina and women will blindly follow.

  • McCain just lost all consideration from me.

I’m thrilled with the choice of Sarah Palin as VP. McCain is too ‘middle of the road’ for ME, but Sarah is a strong Pro-Life, Pro-Family, Christian and conservative. She’s a real Republican.

With her on the ticket, I most certainly will be voting for McCain in November.

Obama will get all the welfare role votes and not much more.

Experience is an issue with her??? And this with Obama the messiah having only 143 days of experience in the senate? Right…I think the McCain/Palin ticket might just appeal to a lot of folks that would have otherwise not voted at all…plus it appeals to Conservatives and even liberals that can see that Obama is not just Liberal, he is a Marxist.

I find such a deliberate and empty ploy to try and pander to women downright insulting. Does anyone honestly think that Hillary’s disgruntled supporters are in droves going to rally around a gun-toting ex-beauty queen who is against abortion??? If you do then you really are living in cloud-cuckoo-land. The woman is Dick Cheney with breasts and a bad hair-do. And 20 months in the Alaska Statehouse (a lot of people in this country probably can’t even find Alaska on a map) qualifies her to be President??? Hello?…..this is pot here, calling kettle…..hello? Do we REALLY want this one heart-beat away from McGramps? I know some Republicans that are really lamenting over this today and who are already kissing the election good-bye. good to see even the republican vp candidate likes Obama’s plan

Palin Pleased with Obama’s Energy Plan Includes Alaska’s Natural Gas Reserves

August 4, 2008, Fairbanks, Alaska - Governor Sarah Palin today responded to the energy plan put forward by the presumptive Democratic nominee for President, Illinois Senator Barack Obama.

“I am pleased to see Senator Obama acknowledge the huge potential Alaska’s natural gas reserves represent in terms of clean energy and sound jobs,” Governor Palin said. “The steps taken by the Alaska State Legislature this past week demonstrate that we are ready, willing and able to supply the energy our nation needs.”

In a speech given in Lansing, Michigan, Senator Obama called for the completion of the Alaska natural gas pipeline, stating, “Over the next five years, we should also lease more of the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska for oil and gas production. And we should also tap more of our substantial natural gas reserves and work with the Canadian government to finally build the Alaska natural gas pipeline, delivering clean natural gas and creating good jobs in the process.”

Governor Palin also acknowledged the Senator’s proposal to offer $1,000 rebates to those struggling with the high cost of energy.

“We in Alaska feel that crunch and are taking steps to address it right here at home,” Governor Palin said. “This is a tool that must be on the table to buy us time until our long-term energy plans can be put into place. We have already enjoyed the support of Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, and it is gratifying to see Senator Obama get on board.”

The Governor did question the means to pay for Obama’s proposed rebate - a windfall profits tax on oil companies. In Alaska, the state’s resource valuation system, ACES, provides strong incentives for companies to re-invest their profits in new production.

“Windfall profits taxes alone prevent additional investment in domestic production. Without new supplies from American reserves, our dependency and addiction to foreign sources of oil will continue,” Governor Palin said.

McCain is either brillant or an idiot, time will tell. However, it is quite odd that he picked a partner for VP that has less experience than Obama—which has been his primary agenda or complaint against Obama—not enough experience to be president. I think he made a calculated move to try and sway unsatisfied Hillary Clinton voters. I think most of the these voters will vote Democratic when it comes election time. I think most Republicans are as suprised as anyone. There are probably as many male voters who will not vote for a woman as there are who will not vote for a black man.

She’s made great efforts to support Alaskans through the energy crisis. She has exposed the corruption in Alaska’s good-ole boy system, and she has not always stayed rigid to Republican party lines. That is a factor that has won McCain over with us independents!

She has no pizazz, no umphf. no appealing peronality. She is Pro-life, I get that, but what about Pro-Living. She is a virtual unknown. Who really knows anything about her in the lower 48. Even watching the announcement was boring to me. Nothing & I mean absolutely Nothing moved me today. NOT 1 darn thing. I think this choice was a cop-out and a cowardly move.

I damn sure am NOT a Bush fan but to vote for a man that clearly wants to keep the same polices of the last 8 years? HELL NO, he and his croonies must go. Eight is definitely enough and 4 more would be just plain old ridiculous.

This is the most obvious form of pandering for the Republicans to think they can fool women who supported Hillary Clinton to switch over just because they put a woman on the ticket. Two years ago, Sarah Palin was may of an Alaskan village of 8,000 people. Now in her first “presidential act,” 72-year-old cancer survivor McCain would put her a heartbeat away from becoming Commander in Chief. All of his arguments about Obama lacking experience and judgment just went out the window. Obama at least picked for VP someone who is fully qualified to assume the Presidency tomorrow. McCain’s choice of Palin, who would have no idea where to begin if she were thrust into the top job and would have to rely upon the same Republican team left over from the Bush administration, is proof that McCain is not “ready to lead.”

In case this one gets approved:

*Palin began her political career in 1992. *Obama began his political career in 1997.

*Palin’s career has prevented her from being exposed and tainted by old-school Washington. *Obama began his campaign pandering the race card to the senate before he even submitted his first piece of legislation.

McCain and company, in selecting Palin for VP, have turned the identity politics of the democrat party into a powerful weapon. As an African-American Woman, I had a very difficult time deciding between Obama and Clinton. I had a difficult time between the two, not because I am a black woman, but because I believe so fervently in their politics. Now, everyone is entitled to their feelings, but I believe that McCain picked Palin because she is a woman who will cover the conservatism that his party feels he is lacking. I don’t care about any of that because I don’t believe in her politics. I find it difficult to believe that there are women out there who believe that it is another persons right to tell her what she can and cannot do with her body in regards to abortion. I cannot believe that people believe that it is okay to tell a large group of people that their feelings for a person of their same sex are wrong and that they should be discriminated against because they have those feelings. I cannot believe that there are people who don’t understand that while guns are an important amenity for one persons lifestyle, they are dangerous weapons in regards to another’s lifestyle. The fact that because I live below the middle class line, I somehow deserve less. After reading the majority of this blog, I understand that many of you feel this way. These are my views of McCain/Palin’s politics, and they don’t line up with what I want for another 4-8 years. So I personally can care less who he chose, it didn’t affect my decision one way or another. Obama/ Biden ‘08!

I see the RNC trolls and spin doctors are out in force. All the GOP faithful in my office basically said the same thing, “He picked WHO?”. Lots of eye rolling around here, folks.

Seems to me that the republicans that are posting here don’t seem to be focused at all on the fact that she is a woman. Only the dems are concerned with that.

“Offensive to women…” “Not like Hillary…” “Too pretty to be…”

But, the republicans have very carefully avoided making stereotypical remarks like that about Obama.

Where is the equality in this history-making presidential race?

McCain. It is over. The pick for your VP is sad!

    By Common Sense

    August 29, 2008 4:29 PM | Link to this

If this wasn’t so sad, it would be funny. McCain’s basic premise against Obama is that he is too inexperienced. So what does he do? The man would be the oldest president ever going into office, who has health issues such as bouts with melanoma - a possibly deadly ailment . It is reasonable to question who would be in charge if the unthinkable happened. And what does McCain do? He picks a FIRST TERM governor from Alaska who has ZERO experience. Not just little experience, but NONE - particularly on foreign policy. Hillary had experience comming out of her ears - she was in the Whitehouse and knows EXACTLY what kind of challenges a president will face. We all know Hillary Clinton, and Palin is no Hilary Clinton. I wouldn’t put Palin in charge of Clayton Co Schools.

This pick is just another example that McCain has awful judgment. Its just an example that McCain has no substance - HE WILL DO ANYTHING TO GET ELECTED. That includes changing his issues on policies to stroke the Republican base - and you all know it. After all, only 6 months ago McCain himself opposed off-shore drilling. And in this situation, the Republicans have been emphasizing experience, then FLIP FLOP. Sad and unintelligent.

    Voting for McCain is DANGEROUS.

I am insulted as a woman that McCain would think that he would get my vote just because he adds a woman to his ticket. She is a right wing, beauty queen with little to no experience and minimal education. No thanks. I think that this clearly illustrates how he underestimates women.

Wow - I just don’t get this pick. I am a republican and I want to think McCain made a great choice, but is she really ready to become the president if he should become incapacitated? He hasn’t lost my vote - it’s certainly note enough to make me vote for Osama, I mean, Obama - but they’ll need to convince me she’s strong enough to lead the nation or I may just sit this election out.

I can’t help but think his choice was a knee jerk reaction to the Dems. I can almost hear the conversation …

Conservative? Check! Supports the Military? Check! Young? Check? Female? Check! Black? Well … four out of five ain’t bad! And besides, she hunts!

I see the great marketing power in this ploy; a good 50% of Americans are EASILY swayed by marketing gimmicks, so I have to give McCain that one. But seriously I do not see this as a good pick. Sure it’ll be hard for Dems to pick her apart…other than the PTA she has ZERO experience…seems like a walking contradiction to McCain’s continual attack on Obama’s experience. it’s a great right-wing gimmick, but seriously she is one heart attach away from the White House as his VP and that is frightening! Why not get the mayor of Lithonia if you are going for gimmick gold.

Tried to post this previously, so sorry if duplicate

I’ll have to do some research on Palin. I like the pro ANWR drilling and anti-infanticide positions. I’d assume she’s pro 2nd Amendment too (which is good). However, the fact that Neocon/RINO “McAmnasty” picked her means she’s probably a fellow Neocon…ie - chickenhawk/pro foreign entanglements, pro-amnesty/NAU/open borders, pro “free trade”/outsourcing of American jobs/insourcing of H-1B visa workers (taking American jobs), pro Zionist/AIPAC stooge & Globalist Elite shill.

From a GOP prospective, “McAmnasty” would have been better served going with Romney instead of pulling this “diversity” stunt to counter “Bacrock Obummer’s” supposed “star/fresh/energetic, etc.” factor (which is largely embellished by the controlled “mainstream” media).

Either way, our Constitutional Republic is in an awful way with Globalist shill coin side A “McAmnasty” or side B “Obummer”.

I don’t see how anyone on the Republican side can see this as “locking up the nomination,” or “a great pick.” She won’t get the Hillary voters because she is pro-life; she has less experience than Obama; no one knows who she is; she has a current scandal going on in her home state; and now McCain has no argument against Obama. I will give you that McCain was really in a lose-lose position, but Obama and his team will have a field day with this.

JermiahWright: Considering the investigation into potential wrongdoing by Governor Palin was started less than a month ago…how can you call it inconsequential?

It is a rather lurid tale, and her ex-brother-in-law sure seems like a real loser. However, it sure looks like Palin, her husband, and her staff were very interested in getting this guy fired from his job with the Alaska State Police….even as her sister and him are still in court over custody and visitation. It looks like a very sad situation where someone sought to use their power to benefit their family

Prove McCain was SO hoping to run against Hillary that he can’t even let go of that thought now. Makes it appear he intended to run on a ” I was a POW/anti-Hillary platform and has no idea of what to do now that half of that premise is gone.

No boy.. we’re laughing at YOU. In case you don’t read (I’m taking that for granted). “Bush messed up the economy”. The last quarter results showed 3.3% annual growth, just horrible economic news for your Socialist Democratic Party, I know. I realize that down at the B.K. your job growth is rather limited, but try to stay with us.. it is you wishin’ that your boy ‘Bama will take the WH, but you know, deep down, that there ain’t a chance in hell that when peoiple are all alone in front of that voting machine, that they are going to pull his lever. I know it, and I hope you know it. Go get your GED now…

LMAO!!!!!!All of the conservatives I know are really p** off at McCain’s choice so I don’t know who you posers are on this board. What a pathetically desperate atttempt to jump on the “change” bandwagon. Stupid Republicans can’t even come up with their own material. Biden is going to have a field day with Betty Crocker! I have no doubt that Sarah Palin is a fine person and an able governor of our 4th smallest state, Alaska. But it is unbelievable that 72 year old John McCain would thrust her on the stage, only a heartbeat away from the presidencey in order to appeal to Hillary Clinton’s supporters. This is an example of blind ambition willing sacrifice the safety of our entire country in a desperate attempt to become president of these United States.

As a Pentecostal, I celebrate the nomination of the very first Pentecostal candidate for Prez/VP in history.

Congratulations to John McCain for a GREAT pick. This is one STRONG woman.

As far as less experience than Obama…she has been a mayor and CEO of a state. Obama has NEVER even presided over a board meeting. He has NEVER led or run anything. As Hillary said, all he’s done is made a speech.

The experience card does not fly here.
