R. Kelly trial begins in Chicago

R. Kelly faces up to 15 years in prison if a Chicago jury finds the R&B superstar guilty on child pornography charges.

Opening arguments began today after numerous trial delays.Read more here.

Kelly denies that he’s the man in a videotape having sex with an underage girl. Now, 23, the woman, whom prosecutors say was a minor at the time of taping, denies she’s the girl in the footage, which surfaced in 2002. Defense attorneys may also contend the girl, whoever she was, wasn’t a minor at all. The now infamous tape was reportedly made between Jan. 1, 1998 and Nov. 1, 2000.

The Grammy-winning Kelly’s hits include “Bump N’ Grind” and “I Believe I Can Fly.”

What effect will this have on his career? Your thoughts about the case?

Of course it won’t. That’s what is so insidious about the “Rap/Hip Hop” community. Rather than hold people accountable for their actions, as despicable as they are, they are heralded as heros and role models. There’s an unwritten code that says that “well, they made it, so I’m going to support them no matter what they’ve done because we’ve been held down for too long”. Wake up people and listen to a real role model like Bill Cosby!

If there’s any justice in this world, we will never have to listen to “Kels” spew his ghetto ballads ever again and he will have to do a lengthy, lenghty prison sentence like any child predator.

The sad thing is, that no matter how much I would love to believe that this will affect his career negatively, I am sure that it won’t. Much of the damaging evidence that the state has against him, will not be allowed in the trial - including his previous cases from underaged women that he settled out of court.

He has made some great contributions to the music industry, but sadly enough he will still be viewed as a hero to a lot of people.

R Kelly’s career will NOT be affected by the outcome of the trial, unless he gets a lengthy sentence and is gone for a while. People have shown more support to him during these past few years that he has been awaiting trial than they ever have, so that won’t change.

I admit, I am a fan of his music, not of his actions and if you do the crime, you must do the time! Sorry Kells.

R. Kelly is a dirt bag who should be locked up with all the rest of the child molestors. I hope he goes away for a long time. Talking about garbage. He is the epitome of just that!

Yuck R. Kelly you stink!

what he did was stupid but he cannot change it - what he can change is his hair - if he goes up into that court with cornrows in his head he is more stupid than any of us thought - his back is up against the wall so it is high time for him to start playing the game - he needs to go conservative all the way - suit, shoes, hair, no earrings, limited facial hair maybe even a plea agreement if it isnt too late - if we are stupid enuf to believe that aint him in the video, the jury aint either

This man have awesome God given talents. But he must come to grips with who he really is. He has a serious problem and needs help. If the courts do not get him the help that he needs, he will do it again.

Personally, I’m not a fan at all, especially after the allegations. If found guily and fans still want to support him, then it’s their option. I however, could never support a pedophile under any circumstance IMO, those that say I just like his music are just as guilty also. Luckily, my judgment is not clouded by celebrity status.

The main reason his hair is in cornrows is because in the video he is bald with no facial hair. The defense does not want him to look like he did in the video so I am sure they told him to look different. Which is why he has facial hair and braids. Normally, they would have told him to shave and cut his hair…pretty smart for the defense. Now, let’s hope the jury does not fall for that. R. Kelly is as guilty as sin. I have FIRST HAND knowledge!

Let me tell you something.. People who like R. Kelly’s music LOVE his music. They worship him as if he is some kind of god because they are convinced that thiis guy is a musical genius. But there is no genius whatsoever in the things he puts forth over and over in his music. Clubs, thugs, smokin’ trees hotels etc etc. How much more shallow can you be? Or the real question, how much more shallow can a people be? He’s obviously used his money to espcape prosecution all this time. I hope he gets what he rightfully deserves.

What does his “music contribution” have to do with the fact that he is an alleged child molester? We are supposed to overlook the fact that the guy is in jail because he had a job? Most of us contribute a heck of a lot more to society than this idiot but I don’t think the fact that we work 40 hours a week would help us much if we were accused of being a pedophile. Can we please start holding celebrities to the same standards?

I can’t imagine his fan base being very bright in the first place so no, this won’t hurt his career. They will consider this a big straw in his hat, especially if he does well in court because he beat the man. His attorney must be blind to allow him to enter court in a suit with that stupid hairdo, he looks like he about to go home invade or carjack someone.

By RCH

I will wait till all the evidence is presented. I believe the prosecution will have a difficult time proving their case.

Thug rappers may increase their appeal by shooting, robbing etc., but child molestation is a different thing all together. His career will take a hit especially if he is sentenced to a long term stretch.

Remember, in prison child predators are on the bottom rung and are often the recipient of beatings, stabbings, and sometimes even murder.

No he will be there until he decides he don’t want to do music any more. Not that I condone older men with younger girls but when you walk through the projects there is always a older man with a young girl, it has been happening since the beginning of time the only difference is he is black with money. I went to school with a white girl and we were teens at the time her dad lost her in a poker game to a sixty plus year old man no difference. These thing are only talked about when it is to destroy a person who has accomplished what they set out to do and PEOPLE find ways to tear them down. No one has the right to judge the next person, everything that you see and read isn’t always true.

I hope he gets convicted if he’s guilty. But, in these stupid times we live, some idiots will only feel he’s being targeted ‘cuz he’s in that industry, etc., and they will further support this fool and all his antics and crimes. This is a sick world we live in.

If I were stupid or did disrespectful things, I’d be more of a millionaire than I am now. Meanwhile I had to earn my $$ with hard work, profesional education, and sleepless nights, not having fun/partying, but working to save lives. It’s crazy. Right now I wish ALL celebrities and ALL hip-hop/rap folks would just freakin’ disappear. Celebs get off too light anyway, in our penal system.

Regardless of how well versed girls are nowadays, they are still MINORS. R. Kelley is a big time R&B/Hip Hop star. Undoubtedly, he could have just about any OF Age woman of his choosing. He, however, choose to be with minors. That in itself says alot. He does have an Ace up his sleeve and that is the fact that he is black. We Black folk love our Black celebreties and we will support them no matter what. And we all know that this trial will quadruple his record sales. My prediction is that he walks from all charges. Michael did it. O.j. did it and so will Kells.

David Butler, you need to take your head out of your arse. There is absolutely no excuse for a grown man having sex with a 13-year-old girl. I don’t care how much that girl knows or how mature she is, that grown man knows more and is legally, morally and ethically more accountable. I hope you don’t have any daughters.

This is the prime example of what is wrong with our community. Everytime R Kelly comes to the ATL he sells out the venue. V-103, Hot-107.9 still play his music and revere him as an artistic genious. The man is apedophile plain and simple. All of his music is centered around sex, and he clearly likes little girls. If he were not the “R” we would be looking at him with distain, just as we do with the men on Datelines “To catch a predator”. When is the black community going to wake up? When are we going to stop making excuses for our own when they are dead wrong? When are we going to accept responsibility for all things; good and bad? I am so tired of hearing ignorant people say things like “… well from the tape it looked like she knew what she was doing… it was not her first time” Since when do we start blaming the victim in child sexual abuse? Its disgusting, R Kelly is disgisting. And all of us need to be ashamed of ourselves… Those who buy his music, go to his concerts, play his music (Radio One and Clear Channel).

This man is straight garbage. Although I’ve never seen him in person, the person in the video sure looked a lot like him. As for his “God given talents” mentioned by another poster, Kelly’s music of late has been reduced to repetitive chants about being “up in da club” “poppin bottles”. A fifth grader could do a better job writing songs than R Kelly at this point.

A.Kelly is not going to be convicted. It has been such a long time and if he says it is not him and she says it is not her, where is the evidence? I thought there was a statue of limitations with certain crimes, except for murder. We have so much more to worry about than RK. Who really cares!!!!There are some young girls that lie about their age and some look older than their moms. One never knows what went on in the video. RK must remember he has 3 or 4 daughters of his own and what goes around comes around every time. All you have to do is keep on living……….. Regards, G

This is a common event that has been going on in society since it’s creation. Men feel that they are exempt from responsibility of sexual acts committed. Now is the total blame on RKelly? Or is it shared with the parents? I feel it’s both. If she was 13 at the time where was her mom. These child molestation cases need to be looked into more indepth because when you hear the entire case, you begin to get a different point of view. I’m not saying he’s right in any way. But given the opportunity, there are a lot of men in this world that would not turn down sex from a young, attractive female. It’s really sad. When will it end!

By Blkshepherd

Kelly has been known to pay off a lot of folks, ie young girls. but I dont think he can pay his way out of this one. As for the hair anyone that saw the video shows he goes through several different pbazes of hair style. he has unbraided hair in the first shots, a shaved head towards the end but he does have hair facial and braids in one with a bandana on. no denieing thoses lips as he is facing the camara. I dont like any of his music because its all sexually charged and very vulgar. Not interested in singing porn or hearing it. Hes no different that the rappers who curse which I would not spend any of my hard earned cased to purchase or go see them. They dont need any witnesses against Kelly. His catalog of sexually drenched lyrics speak for themselves which will probably tick the judge off and give him/jurors a bias attitude.

You can’t just get your freak on with kids It is pure wrong you must think now days you are going to pay people!!!

I have a 13 year old daughter. She thinks R. Kelly is the scum of the earth if he had sex with a girl her age. Sure sleeping with a minor is repulsive, so I am not trying to defend or make a case for R. Kelly But do we know the whole story? Was the girl sold to him? Did he know how old she was? If I was this girls father R Kelly would have been dealing with me not the courts. This in it self leads me to believe that this was a wayward child. Still no excuse, but I ‘m saying was R Kelly Set-up or drugged. I have a problem with the fact that a video was made. Is R Kelly that narcissistic that he would record himself doing something illegal?

R. Kelly has claimed it was not him on the tape having sex; he said on nation-wide TV that it was not him. The girl has recanted or claimed its not her as those years’ gone by. Accountability of man must not weaken the structure of this country; for we have always step up to the plate and assume our duties with professionalism. The truth will come to surface no matter what she or he said or are saying. To much technologies is at our hands and people can do things that hurt other; by the same token, we do things to hurt ourselves. Mr. Kelly, you need to step up now and do what is right because in the end…your future outlook may take a dive and you could be locked-down! With all indications, its you and that girl on film or tape!

And even though it is off subject i want am going to say it because i mentioned priests. Why is it that when Rev Wright came out with his speech and everybody had so much to say like he should leave his church and all of that because of the message but i never saw where they were persuading people to leave the catholic church when the accusations of child molestation came up with the priests.
