Protests planned for tavern that sells controversial T-shirts

Controversy is brewing in Marietta where a local tavern owner is selling T-shirts that feature a cartoon chimp, “Curious George” peeling a banana, with the words “Obama in ‘08” written underneath.

Mulligan’s Bar and Grill owner Mike Norman defends his actions and calls the T-shirts “cute.” But critics say they’re offensive and racist, according to an article in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“It’s time to put an end to this,” said Rich Pellegrino, a Mableton resident and director of the Cobb-Cherokee Immigrant Alliance. “There’s no place for these views, not in this day and age,” he said.

Several groups plan to protest the T-shirts this afternoon in front of the bar located down the street from the Big Chicken.

Is this a matter of free speech or is the shirt racially motivated?

What are your thoughts?

I’m not black, but I find this to be EXTREMELY racist and offensive. Obama would be the last person I would vote for, but the Curious George t-shirts are uncalled for and not at all funny in my opinion. I will never visit Mulligan’s.

This smacks of racism to me, and is not subtle at all! I’ve never visited Mulligan’s and now I know that I never will. Obviously the owner does not need new business; he seems fairly content with keeping the “ultra conservative” crowd that he panders to. What a way to position your business for the future…

So just how did this guy get the rights to use the Curious George character? He better watch out… his smug attitude may come back to bite him in the form of a cease and desist or even a lawsuit. I am sure Houghton Mifflin (owners of the Curios George license) would be curious about this situation.

I’m not surprised at all by this. I actually would have expected much worse. I’m glad the Cobb-Cherokee Immigrant Alliance is acting to bring awareness to the deep-rooted racism here. And despite everyone’s exasperation everytime racism is mentioned, it clearly still exists and thrives in the US. Obama 08

Get ready America. This is a sign of things to come.Candidates have been lampooned, ridiculed and made fun of ever since the political process began 200 years ago.Now it seems we have a candidate that if you disagree with you are racist. If you question you are racist. If you lampoon you are racist. If you do not support you are racist. If you ridicule or make fun of you are racist. It is kind of frightening when you think about in this country having a leader that you are not allowed to criticize without fear of reprisal.

I was outraged when I read this headline earlier this morning! I called my husband to tell him about it, and we’ve decided to go protest at this place when we get off work today. I cannot believe this owner, Mike Norman, would stand there and say he is not racist and that these shirts are “cute”! What planet is he living on?! The shirts are EXTREMELY OFFENSIVE to me and I’m sure to many others. If enough people protest, I’m sure we can persuade this man to do away with the shirts.

How is it any different from this?

If you can compare one to a chimp, why not the other?

You really can’t have it both ways. As much as I detest sinking out national discourse to the level of comparing people to animals just for kicks, the fact remains that this particular comparison is nothing new.

I think a lot of people just need to get over themselves.

My expectations of Cobb Co are low. Anyone remember that it was Cobb Co that banned gays and lesbians a few years ago?

That said, this type of disrespect, while protected by our civil liberties (which incidentially our current Pres has sought to destroy and Obama plans to re-instate), is tasteless and should not be allowed to be seen as acceptable anymore than racism, sexism and hate crimes are acceptable.

This is America. You may have freedom, but that doesn’t guarantee taste or intelligence.

This is just straight racism. It’s plain and simple. Anytime that you portray a chimp when talking about a black man it is racist. The bar owner should at least be man enough to admit that it smells of racism. I am a white male and I find this sort of behavior very offensive.

Never visit Mulligan’s? I wouldn’t care if I found it extremely racist an offensive (which I don’t) Norman has the right to offend people. What happened to this society to make it think just because you are offended by something, that is makes it wrong, or worse, illegal. There are plenty of opinions and actions that offend me in this world, but I don’t scream for a government body to silence them. Why? Because it is every individual right to express themselves, no matter whom is in objection. You don’t like what Mulligan’s is doing? Fine, that is your opinion. Don’t patronize the establishment, say you don’t like it, but at the same time let them express their opinion as well.

Wait, let me get some popcorn. This thread is going to be a sight to see.

The guy is free to display racist attitudes and signs. However, people are also free to protest at his bar. Society needs to let him know that it is not morally alright to express such opinions. I would love it if his business falls off. However, seeing how this is Georgia, it might go up.

I do hope the people who own the Curious George image sure the cr@p out of him. I doubt they share those views or want their character to be damaged by association because of the t-shirts. If he lost everything he owned, I would have a hard time feeling bad for him.

The sad thing about this issue is that it is no big surprise. There is still plenty of blantant and underhanded racism in this country.

If Mike Norman wants to make this shirt it is in his rights as an American citizen to make it and show it to the world. Norman needs to realize that when he does things like this he can’t cry foul when people accuse him of being a racist.

Old Cobb vs. New Cobb

I don’t understand the need for protesting though. One of the biggest problems created by the Political Correctness movement is that you simply do not know where some people stand anymore.

The business owner is an abusive jerk, that much is clear from the messages he puts on his sign and this idiotic T shirt. His patrons know full well what to expect when they go there, and prospective customers also know what to expect.

The irony is that with so many great new bars and restaurants opening in Cobb, this fella is probably putting himself out of business down the line with his open contempt for many of his neighbors.

By JohnnyReb

It’s marginally humorous, but certainly not offensive (to non-bedwetters). The thing that irks me, is that if it was a picture of a “saltine cracker” lampooning Hillary or McCain ‘08 (both Globalist puppets like Obama btw), there’d be NO uproar or media coverage. It’s only a hate crime or “racism” when the “victim” is a minority. Classic double-standard! Bottom line, we need to support Dr.Ron Paul, Bob Barr or Chuck Baldwin over the 3 Globalist pawns!

The double standard among the black community is amazing. Obama is the member of a racist church for 20 years and it’s called “liberation theology”. One thing that does bother me is this group stating there is no place for this guy selling these t-shirts. There is a bothersome implication that they would like to pass a law against this guy. Hey Dan, the difference between George Bush being showed as a monkey and Obama being portrayed as a monkey should be pretty obvious. NO one complains when Bush is drawn as a monkey because no one has been calling the white race monkeys as a racial slur. You’re right, Norman has the right to make the t-shirt and he has the right to his opinion. Conversely, we have the right to call him a racist. It IS hurtful, it IS hateful and it DOES create a lot of harm for the community. But it seems like this is right up your alley.

Look, I agree with “the captain” who left a message. This Norman guy shouldn’t say it’s a coincidence, just admit he’s racist. I’m tired of racism having all of these consequences (within reason). I didn’t think that Don Imus should have been fired, or John ROcker reprimanded. Why should they? When they give them these token punishments it to appease the conscious of this country. No let them openly display their racist beliefs so everyone can stop talking about how far we’ve come and recognize how far we have to go. As long as they keep trying to hide these situtations people will continue to walk with blinders on. So I applaud Norman, Don Imus, people involved with the Jena 6, etc; for continuing to place a mirror in front of the statue of liberty.

Friends, If you are white, as I am, there is no way you can even imagine any of the hurt which these kinds of thoughtless actions stir up in people of color, whose family members, not long ago and in many of our lifetimes, were hung from trees and burned while white folk, including women and children, socialized and cheered. I am married to a black woman for 25 yrs, and my eight children, are black-identified, and I cannot even relate to the feelings and experiences they have, still, in this day, by white people’s intentional or unintentional prejudicial actions(including my own). I am only 53 and in my lifetime, as a teenager, I witnessed jim crow laws being applied which basically said: you black folk are inferior and are not human. Us white folk have had freedom and self rule for hundreds of years, and we still have all kinds of identity problems, so you expect our black neighbors to get over all of their hurt and problems in forty years and just take name calling as a joke? No one is trying to deny anyone’s rights to expression but we are calling upon our white neighbors to rise above hatred and insensivity, regardless of whether their gestures are appreciated or not, to a new level of humanity. This is what we are asking and we believe even our Mulligans’ neighbors can do this.

Just what is it that is “racist” about the t-shirt? It doesn’t say anything negative about blacks. You people are so fast to jump the gun with your race card. Learn to laugh. I agree with rights to free speech AND free enterprise. Quit being so freakin’ touchy about every little thing. The shirt said Obama ‘08…it didn’t say that Curious George was Obama. Grow up, and get over it. Life is too short.

As a black guy, I of course find his T-shirt offessive. I also agree that the protesters have a right to denomstrate in front of the bar. However, I don’t think he should be forced by law to stop selling those shirts. It is a slipperly slope if the government starts infringing on peoples freedom of speech no matter how distasteful. Hopefully, the peaceful protest and negative media attention alone would convince him to stop. If not, so be it. At least everyone now knows him to be a racist and can decide for themselve whether or not to patronize his establishment.

Free Speech….everyone is entitled to their opinion regardless of the issue. As a Southern white male I have turned a deaf ear to lots of remarks and/or items that could have offended me if I did not respect someone else right to their opinion.

You know the good thing about these posts is that the people who call everyone’s opinions ignorant and feel that they’re SO intelligent and racism isn’t as prevalent as these incidents proove; they’re the ones leaving derogatory posts and are unable to have diplomatic disagreement. Calling people “wimps”, morons, and telling them to get a life simply because they have dissenting opinions shows the character flaws of most of these people. I sincerely hope that some of these posts were done by children and not parents of children.

Coming from a place like Cobb (Count On Being Busted (if you’re not white) Cty, this is really no surprise. Sad but true. And while there is a such thing as free speech, there is also a such thing as RESPECT for others. If the comment about Hiliary had made front page news, I would be offended by that as well, but the fact of the matter is that it didn’t. Certain counties in GA are known for their racist behaviors and views and Cobb is definitely one of them. Its very sad that still in 2008, when we are about to have the first African American President, that blatant, disrepectful, ignorance still exists, and most of all… It is accepted! Ignorance is BLISS—-or is it???

Mike Norman should not be surprised if he is now labeled racist, even more so now than he was before. Just he’s “man” enough to display signs/t-shirts display his points-of-view, he should be prepared when it comes back to smack him in the face!

Have any of you ever even been to Mulligans? It is a great place to go hang out have a beer and listen to some of the old timers talk about how it used to be. It is about the men who served our country and made it possible for THEM (and you, and you children)to have the freedom of speech to say, print, write almost anything. These men have given there time, pieces of their lives (and they also celebrate the lives of the ones who lost), to be called racists by a bunch of hypocrites who have probably never even come close to men of their caliber and courage.

You don’t care that the Flag gets burned, you don’t care that Obama TURNS his back on the United States Flag, you don’t care that he refuses to to say his Pledge his Allegiance to the Flag….quite important issues to me, when considering a man who wants to be the leader of this great nation.

You care that someone has compared him to curious George. How screwed up is that.

Are we so screwed up as a nation that a cartoon figure that indeed has been shown as George W as well is going to sway our vote instead of the real issues.

Go to Mulligan’s. It is a great place. Lot’s of history. Lot’s of people to talk to and learn from. Some you might not like. check out ALL the signing, a lot of it is sure to grab you a bit under your skin. Grow thicker skin. This is the USA, they fought so you could protest.

I’m constantly offended by things he creates for the AJC as I’m sure others are, but you don’t see headlines calling for his head.

So if this Obama guy becomes president does that mean no political cartoonists will be able to satirize him without being called racist? That there will be no Halloween costumes making fun of him or silly greetings at the card shop?

I am so disappointed in the continuing level of racism here. Everyone knows that comparing a Black man with a monkey is blatantly racist. It is not “ultra conservative”, it is racist. Just because it is an exercise of freedom of speech does not excuse it from being racist. To the people who comment on this story suggesting people who are offended should just get over it: you serve as a constant reminder of the bitterness and sickness of the soul that exists in many throughout this country and it is appalling to see the level of comfort that you have achieved being prejudiced and bigoted in your views. But thanks for the reminder, as whenever I feel that Blacks and Whites are making any racial progress in this city, you remind me of how little good progress has been realized and why I should continue to warn my children of the dangers that lie in areas outside of the perimeter.

So it’s okay for you to call our President, George W. Bush names and mock him - but it’s not okay to poke fun at your beloved candidate?

This is a prime example of why the Democratic party will never be taken seriously. If it was not for the Internet and liberal media - NO ONE would be listening to you. NO ONE takes you seriously.

People have to rise from the dead and have fake-ids to get a Democrat elected. You have to bribe your voters with money and drive them to the polling booth. You are such a sad political party. The First Amendment only works for you - no one else…

Why does the Democratic Party - the one that claims to be the most open minded, generous, freedom loving, “love not hate” party protest so much? It’s because they are a bunch of whiney, self-centered, cyber bullies.

Shut up. Grow up. You have ruined our country and your embarassing yourselves.

When the councilwoman in Cobb was talking horribly about the white women who worked in the Courthouse, she was able to get by with it. When you see cartoons of George Bush, the creators call it free speech. Why is this any different? Besides, Obama is 1/2 white and 1/2 black so who cares? If you run for office, you have to have thick skin, no matter what color it is!!!

I’ve been saying since the beginning of Obama’s candidacy that it was going to be a statement of where America is in regards to race relations and people are going to show their true colors.

So, we’re just supposed to think that this “overly conservative” tavern owner want to support Obama by printing T-shirts saying “Obama ‘08” with a monkey peeling a banana. And it’s supposed to be funny coincidence and we’re supposed to believe that Obama looks like Curious George?

Mike Norman… says he’s not racists? Maybe he’s not… but his bigotry is definitely evident.

This is so sad that someone would hide behind the 1st admendment to apply a suble racist comment. We all know the image of monkeys have been used by certain groups to describe blacks for ages. I disagree Steve. In fact I would expect a children’s book company with deep pockets (as Houghton Mifflin has) to pursue this and pressure this man to quit making these t-shirts and destroy the stock that remains. Also, the image of Curious George would be protected under the same copyright. I doubt that Houghton Mifflin wants one of their most popular characters associated with this stunt.

Those of you who see nothing wrong with the T-shirt need to educate yourselves about racial stereotypes. Just because you don’t see where the stereotype lies doesn’t mean it’s not there. Situations exist whether you are aware of it or not. Contrary to popular belief, black people are not poised on the edge of our seats waiting with bated breath to find racism in every single thing. But when it’s there, it’s there, so don’t get all offended just because people decide to speak out against what they feel is hurtful and plain unnecessary.

Norman knew exactly what he was doing, and the first thing a racist utters is “I’m not a racist.” Michael Richards, Don Imus, Fuzzy Zoeller, Bill Clinton, etc. Racism is accepted, simply because it has pervaded our societies since the Transatlantic Slave Trade, however, it is not acceptable. European soccer fans who heckled African players during games made monkey noises and threw bananas and peelings from the stands. If Spanish, Italian, and English soccer fans know that any monkey/banana reference aimed at blacks, replete with the noises, are a hurtful, racist stereotype meant to demean and incite, then so does a white man from Marietta, GA. You cannot tell me that Norman’s actions were innocent. To quote him, “I thought it was cute.” Tell that crap to someone who doesn’t know any better.

The cowardly route is to justify your unacceptable behavior with freedom of speech. When you go public with a stunt that is racist and stereotypical, then get ready for a vociferous backlash from the offended, because that’s protected by freedom of speech, too. I’m so sick of all this hatred and ignorance. Feel how you feel, but don’t display racially stereotypical images just because you have a problem with my color or ethnicity, especially when I’m minding my own freaking business. Be any kind of racist you want in your own home without subjecting innocent people to your narrowmindedness. And whatever charity that was that received the money collected from those T-shirts, if they know how it was raised, ought to be ashamed.

Why fulfill this man’s dream by giving him needless and cheap publicity? Needless because even if this man had a burning cross in front of his restaurant everyday, he will always draw enough clientele, there are enough hate-filled people around. Cheap because he is getting all these free advertisement. How about you ignore him and his fellow ignorant rednecks? The bad news is that people like him will always exist, the good news is they are getting fewer as more and more people become enlightened.

It’s the fact that Mike Norman has long been known in the community for being prejudice and having nothing but negative things to say about immigrants, black people, women, democrats, people from the North… basically anyone who is not him. So while the protection of Free Speech is important and in no way a crime….to use your business to promote the hate inside your heart is disgusting. The man practiacally said he wished Hilary Clinton had been murdered. He always has awful things like this on his stupid sign. How can anyone want to frequent a place that is so full of disrespect for people on a HUMAN level? This isn’t all about politics. He’s probably excited that he gets to hide behind that excuse. I think the best way to handle this is to not give it any publicity. Now the rednecks will come out the woods and flock to his restaurant in droves and the news cameras will show up and have him on the news. This is extremely racist!! All of us Curious George supporters should rally tomorrow to protest this numb skull degrading Curious George in this way. It doesn’t take rocket science to figure out that Curious George would make a better President.

Seriously, Mr. Norman has a right to his opinion and I support that right. I won’t support his bar or buy his t-shirts, but I do support his right to expression. Politicians are, right or wrong, targets of this type of ridicule and when it happens to your favorite politician it might make you mad, but that does not make it any more racist than your boycotts and political correctness make you appear hot headed.

In other words, just because you aren’t bright enough to think of a funny t-shirt about McCain, don’t get your knickers in a bunch because someone was able to come up with a funny t-shirt about Obama.

As someone who has spent time in Mulligan’s a while back, I can tell you that the owner makes his opinions known inside the bar as well as outside. He’s a private business owner and he has a right to put whatever he wants to on his sign out front and he has done this for many years. Of course, now that the AJC and the rest of the news media has declared Obama it’s darling, you can expect more of this type of “in-depth, investigative journalism” to cast aspersions on anyone who may mock or make fun of the media’s candidate Obama. Of course, anything that can remotedly be construed as “racist” will be trotted out for the masses to horrified by. While I don’t agree with a lot of the man’s ideas and opinions, I would (in the words of Voltaire), defend to the death his right to say it.

Racist or not, whichever you may perceive this T-shirt to be, the last time I checked, it was not against any U.S. law to be a racist. If people want to go out and protest everytime someone does or says something they don’t approve of, have at it, but in this case, I believe the end result will be publicity and free advertising for a small neighborhood bar and will greatly increase Mulligan’s revenues and notoriety.

Those who make the comparisons of George Bush being called a chimp do a great of making a point: for me. The intent of calling GB a smirking chimp was to demean him! You see, some of us are honest about our intentions. We mean to insult the man and we own up to it. Not like the cowards who use racist imagery and code words and claim, “Hey I was just funnin’!” I’m amazed that there are people who probably believe that his intent was not to harm anyone. How can a “bar” be bordered on two sides by two churches within 100 yards or so. I had no clue Cobb is a racist county, I moved to Cobb because they play the lottery a lot, back when I worked for the lottery 60% of my business was in Cobb, one county alone. I don’t work for the county but I’m more than sure they don’t practice racism. Cobb is steeped in Civil War history, major battles took place in Cobb County attempting to defend Atlanta. Southern and Northern soldiers died, following their commanders in battle. Any educated person knows the Civil War was an economic war not racism centered. Remember the Boston Teas Party and the taxation practices imposed by the Mother Country, England. A few bad slave farmers gave the south a bad rap. But of course slavery was inhuman, just answer the question of the millions of people who in most recent years are free because the UN has abolished dictatorships. We Americans are fortunate to enjoy freedoms bought by our ancestors. No person goes through life without making mistakes, the Presidency is no exception. The people in a free society have the power to act, if we don’t care for President Bush, impeach him or shut up about his faults. The man is wealthy before and after the office of President of the United States of America. Mr. Norman is in a free society and can act accordingly, will I ever enter his business, no. Poignantly if he is attempting to disgrace Senator Obama. This may actually work out good for Senator Obama. I’m pretty sure the Senator carried Cobb County in the primary and I know he won decidedly the state of Georgia. So to Mr. Norman destroy your body with alcohol and your supporters but leave the innocent alone. Why not give sobriety test to leaving patrons to make sure they save their own life and others.

Racism as defined by dicitonary.com:

“a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others.”

Could someone please explain to me how this shirt implies that Obama, due to his race, is inferior to another person, presumably of the white race?

Additionally, again, if someone made this shirt and it said Bush ‘04, Bush Haters would buy them hand over fist.

Some people need to relax - it is not always about race.

Lastly, this is just a preview of the general election to come. Mark my words - any cristism leveled against Obama from the right/republicans will be racist. e.g. - he is inexperienced - “you racist!”. He has no foreign affiars experience - “you racist!”. He has no economic background - “You racist!”.

Remember when Joseph Biden, a Senate Democrat, stated that Barack was “articulate”. Well, that effectively ended Biden’s presidential campaign because everyone yelled “You racist!”.

Why is anyone shocked? All you have to do is read these blogs and listen to talk radio, and you know it’s there. The sad thing about it, people feel so justified in being racist now a days. Either not admitting that they are when they are, or not thinking it’s wrong when they know they are. It’s sin. Now the interesting thing about sin, is that it not only hurts the person it was directed towards, but the person who is committing the sin is really the one who suffers the most. It will come back to haunt them. It would be in the racist best interest to repent, because we are living in times when harvest comes quickly. Pray for them, love them (Love never fails)and if they don’t change, there sin will over them.

It’s amazing the amount of ignorance that we have to live with on a day-to-day basis. Granted, we understand that there will be jokes made in regards to every politician. But to say that comparing a Black man to a monkey isn’t prejudiced is naïve at best. George Bush has exhibited BEHAVIOR that has made cartoonist to portray him as a monkey, what has Obama done? I am sure that this business owner couldn’t even give Obama’s stance on any matter. I am almost certain that if Hillary was portrayed as a donkey, it has Democratic connotations. It is funny how someone can say something that you happen to agree with and it is “freedom of speech” but when there is dissent, there is something wrong. People have the freedom to protest as well. Many people live their lives to at least attempt to make America a stronger and better place to live, even if it means taking a day off of work. Fortunately there are some people out there that aren’t only thinking of themselves. BTW, it is difficult to “get over it” when it is constantly throw in our faces. Go ahead and ignore this response. I am a resident of Marietta know that racism is every where in this county. America will never progress as a people until we stop looking and judging people on their race, religion and etc. I’m sick of the news reports and the media outlets always mentioning race when it comes to a person of color and making derrogatory comments. The whole time Onama has been in this race all you here about is the Black voters vs. White voters and as for Mulligan’s Tavern I am embarassed that your business shows racism. WHEN ARE WE GOING TO CHANGE GEORGIA, AND ALL ACROSS THE UNITED STATES?

You would think that everyone would know by now that the only people that can be lampooned or ridiculed in public are white men. As a white guy I realize that that is just the way it is. I know that the delicate and frigile sensibilities of women and minorities are not to be tested.

I don’t see the humor at all. With his freedom of speech, why don’t Mr. Norman put on one of his shirts, stand on a street corner (away from his establishment) and explain to passer-bys why he thinks the shirt is “cute”. If it wasn’t meant to be racist, why wasn’t Clinton & McCain put on shirt as well? I thought, not!!!!!!!!!!

The whole story of curious George is racist, the characters are thinly veiled metaphors for colonialism and the slave trade. Norman has free speech- why doesn’t he openly voice his viewpoints? The answer is because Norman inside of himself sees a flaw in his thinking and because like most racists, he is a coward. He has no argument because he attacks ad hominim instead of being able to intelligently critique Obama’s perspectives. Obviously Norman’s behavior is only the transference of his own insecurities.

Please be fair. Everyone who looks at this T-Shirt knows it has gone to a dark place. It is offensive; it is wrong. Due to the fact that its offensiveness is questioned, is indicative of the fact that the inquirer knows in advance that it is offensive. For those who do not support Mr. Obama, with all of his intellect, professionalism, and ability to lead, simply do not vote for him — and please keep the negative racist attitude out of the scenario. When I see offensive behavior such as this, it only confirms for me that the offender KNOWS that Mr. Obama is brilliant!

Wow, you guys really need a history lesson if you can’t ascertain why this would be offensive when referring to an African-American candidate? Historically, that image has been used to demean African-Americans as dumb monkeys. This is offensive and reprehensible.

It would be comparable to connecting a Jewish candidate to a rat (Hitler did this right before the Holocaust to make Germans believe that Jews were the equivalent to “dirty rats”). Or using exaggerated cartoons with big teeth to depict a person of Asian descent.

Does he have the right to do this? Yes. But, is it morally acceptable? Heck no!

If you can’t see why this is wrong, you need to check your history. This man does not deserve your business or money. He’s simply spewing hate at all those who drive by.

Comparing G.W. to a monkey is not the same, since it has no historical significance. White people have never historically been related to monkeys, so that completely takes away the hateful signifcance that comes into play when related to Obama.

I wish you people would open your eyes to those around you. Just because it isn’t offensive to you, doesn’t mean that everyone else should take it. What happens when he continues to spew his hate? One day, your race, economic status, hair color, etc. may get on his radar. What then?

If you let people slide on hating others, there will be no one to save you when they turn their sights on you.

It’s funny to me how shirts that say “He’s Black and We’re Proud” can be sold in Underground Atlanta, but those who oppose Obama can’t have shirts of their own. It’s a typical double-standard. I agree the shirt is a racist statement but I have a different take. Let them sell the shirts and let the people who are prone to do so wear the shirts. It makes it very easy to identify people that otherwise exist in the shadows. If they want to wear a billboard that screams, “I AM A RACIST MORON” … why should we deny them that little pleasure. Meanwhile, try to sell them something worthless for a lot of money.

Gay kisses on TV, offensive rap vidoes, violent and obscene song lyrics, Southern redneck stupid stereotypes, grotesquely violent and filthy movies, video games that have to have a content warning, blatantly sexual movies and ads geared toward already-hormone-hyped 12-year-old boys, etc….. oh, I see, all that stuff is okay, but God forbid a man display his right to free speech if it attacks a liberal, then SUDDENLY it is “offensive and racist.” Gimme a friggin break!!!!! Actually, Cynthia, this is a great t-shirt and it’s funny because Obama is about as smart as a monkey. Once you start using your brain, you’ll realize that Obama has been “made” by the media.

Obama has nothing of substance to say, just a slick grasp of the English language, which gives him only a slight edge over our current president. However, Obama affiliates (and donates!) to hate mongerers like “Rev.” Jeremiah Wright, crooks like Tony Rezko, and bitter people, like his wife. He’s got less judgment in his entire body than most people have in their pinky finger—and he’s counting on all the dope-smoking college kids to elect him president.

If you think things are bad now (which they are), give Curious Obama four years to screw up the country. The presidency of the United States is no place for on the job training … it’s no place for Obama.

There is a level of society which will never contribute to the healing of the ethnic divide. They will only work to increase the chasm that exists between ethnic groups. Some people cannot be reached. They are guided by fear of losing the support of their narrow-minded clichés and ancestors. They are not individual thinkers and rather rely on the beliefs of others. Why insist that you “are not racist”? Why not just have the guts to say you don’t really care for people who don’t look like you? It’s not like people would be surprised.

As for all the “Well, Bush was lampooned” excuse makers, you all know this is different. Bush is lampooned b/c he’s a moron who can’t speak proper English. Obama is being lampooned simply b/c of his African heritage.

There is a difference.

This is simple. If you don’t like the shirt and think less of the establishment’s owner, just don’t be a patron to his business. He has broken no laws, and just because you find something offensive doesn’t mean its offensive to others. Some of you people are just looking for something to protest or be angry about. I think the shirt is funny as hell. By the way, how many times have you same people called our President “Curious George” or laughed at his likeness to a monkey or chimp. Just do a google image search for “George Bush monkey” if you don’t know what I mean.

I have to say one thing about the South, you never have to worry about a racist talking about you behind your back. They’ll put it on a t-shirt and think they’re cute. I hope everyone who thinks it’s “cute, funny, not racist” will run on down to Mulligan’s and wear that shirt everyday. It will help us “slave victims” know where not to spend our money or waste our time trying to treat you all like part of the HUMAN race.

I wonder where all these right wing freedom of speech defenders were when the Dixie Chicks were being dragged off the radio all over the country, and their records and CDs burned, when they used their freedom of speech.

The Freedom of Speech is something that can only truly be appreciated when people say things you do not agree with.

I think this shirt, and the owners prior actions, show all what a fool he is. However, he is well within his rights as an American to act like a fool.

OK, The_Truth, please riddle me this: (your words, my emphasis)

“The presidency of the United States is no place for on the job training … it’s no place for Obama.”

So just what was it that George W. Bush got back in 2001? I mean, he’d almost finished his first term as governor of TX and all. He brought tons of experience to 1600 Pa Ave, I’ll tell ya.

That moron has completely lowered the bar for experience in the White House. The “experience” card is a complete non-starter thanks to him.

Good God, left-wingers these days (I refuse to call them “conservatives” or “neocons,” there’s nothing conservative about record debt, expansion of executive privilege, and trying to monkey—heh, heh—around with the Constitution) will cut any argument to fit their needs and disregard logic, sense, or fact.

What’s frightening about many of the comments seen here is the number people (Citizens) who want to deprive this man of his Constitutional Right of free speech. Comments such as - “It’s time to put an end to this,” and “There’s no place for these views, not in this day and age,” - sounds like vigilantism. This is not American. Regardless of our social, cultural, religious, or political views we must protect our fundamental freedoms. And, as for change and doing the politically thing, remember this, Adolf Hitler’s vision was for a perfect and politically correct society.

This sickens me to my very core. He said on CNN today that the reason he started the shirts is cause he thought that Obama looked like the cartoon monkey and let’s face it, I have seen a picture of both next to eachother and there is no likeness aside from somewhat oversized ears, he is just grasping at straws for a reason to refer to a black man as a monkey, if you don’t think that is racist, than your crazier than I thought. Another twist to the story is the fact that he said he gave all proceeds to MDA (if you don’t know what that is, look it up). As a disabled individual who has friends with MD and friends who work for MDA, I would like to plead with the MDA to give back the money, refuse it, it is dirty money, blood money. In closing, if anyone tries to get upset with me about being to sensitive about race and want to defend this kind of action, don’t bother, I am white myself, but after things such as this, I am a bit ashamed of my race when fellow white men and women act in such ignorance

Reading this blog only confirms what I have known for years - Georgia is one of the RACISTS states in the U.S. I’ve read where many of the white folks on here say “Let it go”, “it’s not racist”, “Free speech”, “Where were the protesters when Bush was characterized as a monkey”? Ever since our ancestors were brought to this country in slave ships by white folks, they have portrayed blacks as monkeys and apes, which is one of the most disrespectful things you can do to a black person. That’s the difference between Bush being compared to a monkey as opposed to Obama. Monkeys, apes, the confederate flag, etc. are symbols of deep-rooted hatred and racism in Georgia and the U.S. There will never be racial harmony in this country until white folks dismiss their arrogant attitudes, especially the way they think they know everything. Don’t tell me to “Get Over it, it’s 2008” when you have never walked a day in my shoes and experience racism and bigotry on a daily basis. I notice how much hatred white folks spew on these blogs because they can remain anonymous, but it’ll be interesting to see how many actually wear this stupid t-shirt in public. It’ll even be more interesting to see how nervous they become when confronted by someone who finds the shirt offensive.I won’t be surprised to see the headline “Mulligan’s Closed for Good After T-Shirt Flap”. Mike Norman will reap what he sows and so will his white bretheren. God have mercy on Georgia, the U.S. and these racist bloggers.

Not Racist? Are you serious? This speaks volumes not only about Mike Norman, but the entire county.

I’m amused by the anti-Obama comments, as well. Come on, folks, admit it … the main reason you can’t fathom Obama as president is because he is black. Not because of his pastor. Not because of his lack of experience.

Don’t feed me the elitist label either. Where were you patriots when John Kerrey was getting worked over by the Bush Swift Boaters?

This county shows why this country has problems. Now I can truly understand the anger of a Jeremiah Wright. Hell, I’d be mad too, if I was black and I was living amongst your kind.

Is it “racist?” Yeah, maybe. Racist is a very overused word that has a misunderstood definition. But this does appear to quite possibly be racist if he is indeed equating Obama to a chimp. This is compounded by historical references to black people with such imagery. This is what makes it different when people compare Bush to a chimp. (And I am very conservative as well and have ZERO intentions of voting for Obama.)

That being said, this is his freedom of speech (rights to the Curious George character question aside). If you are offended, that is too bad. I am not suggesting we try to offend people, but if you are, there is no law protecting you from such. Similarly, people have the right to protest the shirts as well. So long as no one attempts to vandalize the business or use the government to prevent a LEGAL protest or the shirts, then this is how our freedoms work and I applaud both sides for expressing divergent viewpoints with civility.

Finally, one comment - I wish the reporter would tell us what “ultra-conservative” means (not that that is an insult! :) ). But when was the last time you heard the media refer to anything as “ultra-liberal”???? If you want a double standard, there it is right there.

The entire issue is ridiculous. This man is looking for attention and now he has it. In a few weeks, it will die down and he will have to think of something else to do to gain more attention. Just ignore this and strive to live right.

This country is deeply rooted in racism. The anglo (white) people created racism against all other races because they felt and still feel that they are superior to all other racial groups. When I hear white people say that blacks should “get over it” and move on, it really shows how ignorant white people are in regards to the issue of race. Blacks are still dealing with the effects of what their ancestors had to go through.

It should not be a surprise to read all of the racist comments on this post. Racist views are passed down from generation to generation. People will say that they aren’t racist, but if they look deep down inside, they will be surprised (maybe).

White people don’t understand racism because they’ve never had to deal with or be subject to the affects of racism on the level that blacks have. I don’t care if they say they are victims of reverse discrimination, it could never compare to the struggle of other races - black, hispanic, etc.

Most white people want society to think that racism is over because America ended slavery. But, that is very untrue, Racism is alive and well.

If white people don’t think there’s racism anymore, try trading places with a black person for a day. I bet your viewpoint would change. I work with many intelligent, articulate, and decent black people who dress well and are law-abiding citizens. But they get followed when they go into a store, get talked down to by whites in the company because they are thought of to be less intelligent. When something negative happens, the blacks are the first ones to be suspected or accused.

Healing will never come until all races admit their wrongs, get educated and work together to make changes.

I never fail to be amazed at the absolute ignorance of so many Georgia citizens. There are probably hundreds of posts here by people screaming ‘freedom of speech’ and trying to make the argument that GW has been depicted as a chimp, so it’s fair game to do the same of Obama.

Yes, GW’s portrayal as a chimp is offensive and probably in bad taste, and I think it was meant to be. The difference is that when he is depicted as a monkey, he is being attacked for something that he personally has control over- his mental capacity. He is responsible for the plethora of poor decisions he’s made, for being uninformed, for his inability to pronounce simple words correctly, and for the fact that he is incapable of comprehending even the slightest nuance.

But one of the definitive characteristics of discrimination is when someone is attacked for a quality they have no control over, such as age, sex, or race. Mike Norman has admitted that he printed the shirts because Obama, a black man, resembles a monkey in his eyes. This is not just a personal attack on Obama, but an insult to an entire race. There can be no explanation other than blatant racism. For centuries Black people have had to endure the allegation that they are related more closely to monkeys than to humans. It is absolutely disgusting that the first Black man running for president would have to face the same ignorance. It is even more disgraceful that so many citizens would support this despicable bar owner.

Yes, this reprehensible thug has a certain right to free speech to produce this smut, just as the Ku Klux Klan has a right to exist and Nazis have a right to organize. Society will always have racism. It will always have its dregs such as Mike Norman, its rapists, its pedophiles. But it is shameful that in 2008 so many Georgians obviously support the bottom of the barrel of our society, and therefore wallow there themselves. Ignorant racists, all of you who support this smut.

From the allegations of “white liberal guilt” to Wright’s misconstrued comments to the blatant spin in Pennsylvania to petty, childish expressions of racist sentiment like this, it both saddens and disgusts me how race has been injected into Obama’s presidential campaign by his opponents. This is not only politically stupid, but the apparent ease with which it is accomplished shows how far we’ve regressed as a nation. Not only that, but it shows how loathsomely cheap and shallow our public discourse has become. This kind of flippant, immature racism belongs on a bottles of patent medicine in the 1880s, and not on 21st century t-shirts. It belongs to the realm of anachronism, if solely to remind us of how ugly we once were.

Now if I were a Republican, I would be out there protesting with Obama supporters with all my heart, because I guarantee you that these sorts of incidents will come back to hurt them in November. The American people don’t want to be associated with racist ideology or with hatemongers. In a way, I can’t help but feel bad for Republicans, because we all know that they can’t control the blatant craziness that frequently errupts from within their own ranks- they’re victims of their own propensity for excess. Of course, I feel worse for Obama, who is the true victim here, and I feel even worse on behalf of my country, because this kind of thing is really uncalled for and hurts us all.

Bigotry is outright stupidity and ignorance. The shirt is an example of such. When the monkey was used to portray George W. Bush it was appropriate as it was used to portray his inability as a president and as being one of stupidity which is completely accurate.

At this time in history it still amaze me that there are people who still don’t get it. They are afraid to put the blame were it lies. He still think that the problem with America is people other than White people, not realizing that the power elite are people just like him who don’t care about him or any other working class person. If this is his only way to feel good about himself then he has a said life. While he keep looking at minorities and the problem, America is being stolen from him and every other working class person. I pray the Scales be removed from his eyes and he realize that it is about class not race. The elite don’t care about him either. The time for division is long past. This moron from Cobb is nothing more than a leftover racist from the 1950s. There is no hope for this fool except that he (and others who think like him) will soon disappear from the face of this planet. Like the dinosaur, he and his ilk will be a mere historic footnote soon. We will all be better for it.

As a white, Anglo-Saxon protestant, I fully support Obama’s quest for the White House. With the present economic fiasco facing America, I would vote for anyone EXCEPT another Republican who sings W’s praises. Yet, of all the candidates on the Democratic ticket, Obama always seemed to be the best choice of the field of candidates in the 2008 race.

Frankly, in my lifetime, I never thought I would see a non-Caucasian candidate who could appeal to a broad swath of Americans as a presidential contender. Yet, here he is. Personable. Smart. A speaker on par with JFK and Reagan. A person who can grasp the historic significance of the milestone that his presidency would offer America as a nation.

I could never have supported a Jesse Jackson or an “Al Sharpton”-type candidate. Too divisive and not really credible, in my view. But, Obama has all the tools and attributes of a credible national leader. He will be able to attract the best-of-ther-best candidates for his Cabinet and Advisors.

His one flaw, that I have observed, is smoking cigarettes, and he has vowed to his wife that this is over. I plan to hold him to that promise, as I am certain she will do.

Before this story broke about the “monkey and banana t-shirts” broke, I had not made any financial contribution to Obama, although I have openly supported his candidacy from the outset. Seeing this moron’s demented acts of derision and mockery, clearly designed to denigrate this man based solely on the color of his skin, is enough for me to GET INVOLVED.

Today, I start my contributions, and will start actively soliciting others to do the same. My goal is to use my influence to help raise $100,000 for him before the end of July. I will give the maximum allowed by federal law. Then, I will push others to do the same.

Thanks to the racist in Cobb County, I have now taken up the banner of Obama and will start carrying it with me wherever I go. Maybe I can convince other blue-eyed blondes like myself to realize that the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that Obama’s candidacy offers for our nation cannot and should not be passed up.

The majority of Americans know what I know: Character matters, not color.

I think its sad how many are willing to close their eyes and pretend that racism does not exist. Some of you have so much hate in your hearts that you can find joy in life. Racist come in all colors. And this is racism at its fullest. If you want to say “i’m not a racist. i love everybody” but think its ok to compare a man of color to a monkey then sadly you are a racist. And if you think the owner did this as just a harmless joke then you are just as blind to other cultures as that owner is. Years and years of racism of any kind is permited and people just don’t think. 94.1 radio station this morning stated “oh its just harmless fun, lighten up”…they are just as blind as that owner is.

I’m afraid I need to defend one of the great hallmarks of democracy. The constitutional first ammendment gives all the right to freedom of speech as long as slander or libel is not directly involved. This in no way is acquiescence to condone individual conduct. I may personally find a particular practice reprehensible, but I must apply the litmus test that acknowledges it’s perfectly acceptable to say that I find this offensive and I’m not going to engage in this activity, It is not okay to say that I find this practice offensive and I’m not going to let you do it.

Protesting the place carrying signs just gives the guy publicity. How about a bunch of our Hispanic citizens just going in speaking only Spanish until the end of their sentence where they say “Miller Lite” por favor. Then they sit and drink ever so slowly. Maybe t-shirts on with a picture of Mike Norman on it with the word “loser” under his face in Spanish. Do it like Letterman sometimes does skits in NY. Send in 1 guy every minute until there are about 100 guys in there. Now that would be a great protest.

We live in such a sad, sad world - racism still exists folks especially in the good ole South where confederate flags are flown with pride. No regard for the memories of what that flag means to some people. We cannot begin to heal until there is a level of sensitivity that brings about change. People like the Mulligan’s owner, being 63 and undoubtedly has lived in era of racism, KKK, etc, create problems with their ignorance and lack of respect for others be it Obama or Hillary or anyone else. It will probably never be over until that generation dies off. The protestors are there to acknowledge the ignorance and to say to him that it is not acceptable to put inappropriate items on a t-shirt. Those of you who don’t see anything wrong with this t-shirt are undoubtedly on the same page as the owner. So sad that we can’t spend time on things that heal the wounds versus reopening them continually. The South is not known for acceptance to other races.

Reading through the comments posted, I find this extremely scary that there are so many people out there that really don’t find anything wrong with these shirts. Like, some of you are seriously playing stupid and the others really don’t have clue and think it’s okay. Stop acting as if you don’t see the correlation. For those that have been raised racist and really don’t know any better, Blacks were called monkeys…better yet “porch monkeys” and the such during the Jim Crow era. Look up Jim Crow if you don’t know what that is. It is offensive and racist. Now, since George W. Bush is not Black, who gives a FRICKIN’ CRAP that he is compared to a monkey. Heck, he IS a monkey! Now, don’t walk around like it’s the same durn thing. This is obvious and blatant racism. And, it’s not just Blacks that he offends. Latinos are not exempt. Stupidity and ignorance are not cute.

FREE SPEECH - Mr. Norman has the right to proclaim his racist ignorance however loudly & proudly he wishes, including his lame lying excuses for creating the Obama shirt, at least until he is sued, or worse. This is stupid….a stupid racist, redneck, fool who will probably be dead in a years or bankrupt from a lawsuit said this stupidity and continues to make himself look like a fool. Where does this conversation fit into the big scheme of things? He said what he meant….but who in the world is he? He’s a nobody who runs a “Nobody’s Restaurant” in Marietta, Ga! Who cares about him….I’m sure Obama will be called worse than a monkey before it’s all over with…..

Oh and for my counterparts who commented that they don’t understand why black people get offended when being compared to animals and other beings less than human….I think you need to go back to American History 101 for a refresher course. Things have indeed changed, but in case you didn’t remember it hasn’t been that long. No one expects you to fully understand another group of people’s response or perspective on an issue; however, show a little humanity and don’t expect someone to sit back and bite their lip if they disagree with things that are unnecessary and foul. There is a such thing as right and wrong and I’m sure all our mothers taught us if you don’t have anything good to say then you should keep your mouth shut…that’s universal.

For the “Freedom of Speech” comments: Yes, we all have the Freedom of Speech but this is what happens when you exercise your “right to offend.” Then others have the right to speak out against a particular speech that is offensive. This act was irresponsible, therefore causing chaos!

The best wy to handle situations such as this is to not visit the establishment. He won’t think its so funny if it cost him money.

Unfortunately, I believe that he will probably see an increase in business because there are still too many people in this country living in the past. We are quick to tell Blacks to get over the slavery issue and get on with their lives, yet we embrace those who still project the slave owner mentality.

So bumper stickers that say F the President are OK. Comparing Bush to the Nazi leader who murdered millions is OK. Making photos that do side by side comparisons of Bush with monkeys, chimps, and yes, even curious George is OK but doing just one of those things to Obama is a moral abomination? Holy Double Standards Bat Man!

Let me tell all my white brothers and sister who do not find this racist or offensive. first and formost, blacks during years of slavery that many of your ancestors who you are deeply proud of, owned slaves called blacks monkeys and other deragatory, demeaning names during the civil rights movement, blacks were still being called monkeys, so this is the reason its is offensive, and yes has a black man i am offended when George W Bush is refered to as Hitler.

People are upset about this? There is a moral outrage about this? People think this is wrong? The same people all bent out of shape have been doing the same and worse to bush for nearly 8 years. The same people mad about this are the ones who have called him Hitler, have compared him to monkeys, chimps, and even the same cartoon character. Holy Double Standards Morally Holier Than Thou Man!

I just have to clarify a few things -first of all, to those of you who are saying this is a “freedom of speech” issue - “freedom of speech” only refers to government interference with speech. So unless Marietta or Georgia or the Feds take some action against this guy - this statement is a non sequitur. You might as well say, “Oh, the sky is blue. .. and he has the right to say whatever he wants.” Of course he does - as does everyoone who says he is an idiot and protests outside of the bar. That being said, just because he has the right to say something does not make it right to say, but that is another discussion. Second, to all of you who say that he will lose in a lawsuit because this is clearly copyright infringement - do some research on “fair use” and copyrights before you spout on the topic. I suspect the reason the copyright holder didn’t take action right away is because they know that there is a chance they could lose in court. They are propbably hoping that the court of public opinion will moot the issue and he will stop selling these on his own. At some point they might try to pressure him by filing a nuisance suit, but that is dangerous, since the outcome is far from clear if he contests. As far as whether this is offensive, well, that is in the eye of the beholder. I personally find it offensive and juvenile, but having been the butt of countless racist remarks, I have found that ignoring the ignorant is one of the best ways to marginalize them. The louder you protest, the larger their forum - i.e. the case at hand.

Who is this hurting? Is this causing somebody to lose money or not get a job? It’s symbolic and freedom of speech……there’s more important fish to fry in the black community ( crime in Dekalb Co., Clayton school board etc. ) but they get up in arms over silly symbolic things. Get a life people

Really, people, has it come to this where we must use the negative images of the Jim crow era to drum up business. Yes, I am a firm believer in freedonm of speech but at what point do we forget sensitivity to people of all races. Just because you do not see it as racist does not mean it is not offensive. This man is no stranger to controversy and seem as if he thrives on it. We are in the south and this proves that the racist roots are still alive and well.

This falls under FREEDOM OF SPEECH people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It wouldn’t be a big deal if everyone would have just let it go. Now that everyone has made such a big deal over it, the whole country knows about it and what did that accomplish?…letting everyone know that there are still racist in the South??? Everyone already knew that.

The outcry is interesting to me. People automatically attack the south. I don’t think that’s acurate. Check out race relation statistics in the north. Did anyone happen to notice where this guy said he got the shirt from? Last time I checked that is NOT a southern state.

How is this T-shirt racist? tell me how it makes fun of any race in any way. it is simply a political cartoon just like the ones that we laugh at daily in our news magazines. the shirt is insulting Obama, not the entire African-American race. yes this could be offensive, but only to Obama. if it was a shirt making fun of george bush or hillary clinton no one would be running in yelling about racism or sexism. most of you would have just laughed at it. there is nothing racist about a shirt with a picture of obabam looking like curious george. if the shirt had a picture of a monkey and a arrow pointing to it sayin “black people” then it would extrememly racist. i will admit that the shirt is probably inappropriate and shouldnt have been put up for sale but arent there hundreds of other shirts that are more offensive or wrong? all of this is simply circumstantial. i highly doubt that the creators of the shirt said “oh lets make this shirt portraying Obama as Curious George because we hate black people with a passion.” more likely someone came up with a funny t-shirt design and someone said “hey we should sell that i bet you could get some money off of that” most likely those people are sitting somewhere thinking “why did we ever come up with this shirt? everybody hates us and it was just meant as a joke”

I’m against the t-shirt, but I LOVE everything else. Political correctness must die in this country. You don’t have the right to not be offended.

And this pales in comparison to Rev. Wright. Rev. Wright is flat-out racist (“USA of KKK”, “WHITE PEOPL!”), hates his country (equating the US with Al Qaeda), has no clue of this country’s history (Hiroshima comments), is hypocritical (million dollar mansion and luxury cars), and doesn’t deny any of it. At least this guy denies he’s a racist, meaning that he KNOWS racism is wrong. Wright doesn’t care.

As an African American woman, I am highly offended by that t-shirt but like most African Americans I am not surprised at all. Especially coming from Marietta, a city known in history for it’s lynching and sparking the birth of the 2nd Ku Klux Klan. This bar clearly wants to maintain a racist reputation and they are proud of it. Mark my words, surely there will be more to come—and not just from this bar. But through it all I am thankful to God for the decent white people of America because without them and the help of God, I along with many other African Americans could have a bitter racist heart but the love that some white folks show make it hard to be hateful or bitter. To God and to all the decent white folk, I say thank you.

Well what do expect from the nimble minded folk of Cobb County. This is the reason that the old south still exist, and Jim Crow is alive and well not only from Cobb County Government, but right down to the lost in transition individuals that promote this humor. The only ape is the owner of Mulligan’s. Maybe someone should depict the Grand Imperial Wizard as a snake. I bet Cobb County would be up in arms then. Why not let the racism die. These people are just left overs from that ill-fated conflict called the Civil War. Let the dead bury the dead.

The shirts are obviously racist. There’s no question about it. And I certainly would not ever patronize that establishment.

However, calls for banning his ‘provocative’ signs are extreme. Don’t like him, don’t patronize him. But we can’t censor him.

Copyright infringement, however, is another matter, and I do hope Houghton Mifflin pursues this.

I don’t have time to read all the blogs but I hope someone has mentioned this already, if not, here goes… For 8 years we have all seen the emails passed around with the pictures of George W. in several facial expressions all accompanied by the picture of monkeys with similar expressions. These were ok by your double standards. Obama is on one t-shirt with Curious George and the rabble rousers start screaming RACISM!!!! GET OVER IT!!! What happened to my first amendment right to freedom of speech? The first amendment seemed to apply with the GW Bush pix and the monkey expressions but not with Obama the (not-so) Great. Please choose one and stick with it. Is it ok to express your views or not? I don’t care who I offend, I choose freedom of speech. If you don’t like it move to some gimpy little third world country that publicly cuts your tongue out of your mouth for inappropriate speech, then see how you like it. Until then, be thankful that you live in a country that allows you (at least for the time being) to freely speak what is on your mind.

Don’t be like your forefathers who hid their racism behind bedsheets. Be upfront about it. What ever happened to the city too busy to hate?

This is why most races hate America. You have one set of people that think they are superior to everyone else and are afraid of change because change will put everyone on the same playing field and no longer will the color of your skin or the amount of money your family has will be a factor. The factor will now be the content of your character. Whoever did this is small minded and full of hate.

All of you making excuses for the t-shirt are in massive denial. The “monkey” slur has be used by racists to disparage African-Americans for over a hundred years. The fact that this bar owner with ultra right-wing views just happened to make that reference to Obama is no coincidence. Even if he doesn’t mean it, everyone is going to take it that way, and he knows better. He just doesn’t care.
