Kesting taken to task for Black History speech
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Cobb County Commissioner Annette Kesting has stirred up controversy over comments she made during a Black History Month celebration at a Marietta church.
Kesting had been invited to Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in February to speak about African American history and and the theme “Strength to Love,” which is the title of a book by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., according to an article by AJC reporter Jeremy Redmon.
Instead, Kesting veered off topic. “I love my enemies. I pray every day with my enemies because I have to go up on the third floor and work with white women,” she said in the speech, which was videotaped. She told the audience they would be amazed at the people she works with. “They are not Christian - Christian people,” she said.
She goes on to complain about the “evilness” surrounding her when she goes to the office.
In an AJC interview, Kesting, who is seeking re-election, softened some of her comments, saying that she does not count white women among her enemies and that she represents all people, regardless of religion or race. She said her comments were designed to motivate women in the church. She apologized if her remarks offended people.
Cobb Commission Chairman Sam Olens, who is Jewish, said he wasn’t offended by the remarks about non-Christians, according to the article. He said Kesting was talking about “loving God” and not criticizing other religions.
This is not the first time she’s faced controversy.
She has also been late paying county real estate taxes and faced code violations on rental property she owns with her husband in Powder Springs.
Do you think this incident will affect Kesting’s re-election bid? Are you satisfied with her explanation?

I’m happy to hear that she was “outed” by the members of the congregation who refused to accept this type of speech in church! One for the Christians, zero for the lions.

This is the kind of rhetoric that continues to divide us by skin color. It saddens me that this woman feels it is necessary to stand in a church a speak in such a manner. Does she think it makes her look like a martyr? People can just be mean, regardless of skin color. I am white and I have worked with mean people, but I am not going to get up a church and make it a race issue. Good grief.

Another one bites the dust…?
Do all black people really hate white people or is it only the ones that are in the public eye?
Speaking from a point of being one of the most biased against groups out there (white, male under 30, smoker). Look, we all want money from the white males that have been running this country for a long time, but they won’t just fork over the cash. I am not pointing the finger at any group in particular for the mere purpose of laying blame on them for the problems that we face now a days, but…educate yourself, create connections and pull yourself out of the rut that you are in and don’t expect anyone to give you a handout. Believe it or not this is a dog eat dog world, we live in. That is what the majority of the people do, instead of throwing the race card. Pull your pants up and shut up about the white man keeping you down, because he isn’t. Your own ignorance is what is keeping you down and that applies to all races, not just one in particular. There is a saying if you are going to be stupid, you’d better be tough. From the sounds of it there a bunch of tough people out there.

As a longtime African-American resident of Cobb County, I am embarrassed by these remarks, as well as the persistent conduct and steep learning curve of this Commissioner. Cobb has always been head and shoulders above other Metro Atlanta cities and counties- this is a step in their direction, unfortunately. Good thing this is an election year.

Perhaps Ms. Kesting would feel more “safe” working for Fulton County. We all know what a fabulous reputation for reverse discrimination they have. Funny how when it’s re-election time, these narrow-minded bigoted politicians don their sheep’s clothing.

Reverse the situation: “I can’t believe what the black woman at the DMV did to me today.” Racist or just descriptive?
How about “Those blacks at the DMV just don’t want to work, period.”
“I can’t stand going to the DMV. Those black people behind the counter don’t even look at you when you’re trying to do business.”
If you think those comments are racist then you have to agree that Kesting’s are as well.

With all of the “controversy” her remarks caused, why is there not a single parishoner in the AJC article complaining about her remarks? If her remarks made so many people feel uncomfortable, as the reporter claims, why was he too lazy to find some of those people to talk about it in the newspaper?
Sure, he has a quote from the historian chastising the Cobb Commissioner, but the quote sounds like it was 100% in response to JEREMY REDMON’ S question. So who was “offended” by the remarks … the congregation or the AJC?
In all likelihood, the commissioner said some things that were sloppy and ignorant on their own merits, and that turn distasteful and racist when they are taken out of context. Kudos to the Jewish commissioner for recognizing the context of his colleague’s remarks — something the AJC totally missed with this shoddy story.

This persons comments are offensive, inappropriate and racist. It is comments like these that prevent any progress on the racial divide in this country. It is hard to believe that a county official would make comments like this and in a church no less! There is no place where comments of this kind are acceptable especially from a government official. She should apologize and then submit her resignation.

Seriously, when I go to church, I go to listen to sermons that give analogies between regular life and the bible/God. I don’t think I’ve ever sat in a church where people spout off and hate against other races and/or people in society. When you are in the house of God, this is the most important time to be positive and reflect on all that we are lucky to have. Sad that some think it is a time preach their hate. I say kick this lady out of office. What a hatemonger.

We’d better relieve Ms.Kesting of all the horror she suffers each day at work—vote her out! The sistah does not need to have to put up with such awful working conditions!
And let’s take up money for her husband’s divorce, who, she just inferred, she married for his money.
Perhaps she should just be a slum-lord full-time.

Easy guys easy….its ok…cause she be black. If it was so wrong Jessie and Al and the boys would be down here to straighted all us poor crackers out. Two standards now and has always been. It is ok for a black commissioner to say what ever she wants to say, to malign any group she wants, to put forth a bigoted racist opinion and she suffers no reprocussions. Take note of this politicians…we are sick of it. Shut the he** up and do what you were elected to do or resign so we can elect someone that will do the job. This commissioner is so full of hate that it is comical that she is supposed to speak of Love????? I don’t care who she is married too…and by the way, from her comments she must have married that white man for is money because she advised all the black women in the audience to find a white man and marry him if he gots the money. Geeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzz what an ignorant, hateful, sleezy moron.

Why do we always condemn someone for speaking out loud what’s been discussed behind closed doors forever? That’s the big problem with this country … we want to pretend that we don’t have a problem with race when we ALL know that’s not true. But if it makes anybody uncomfortable, we’re ready to take that person out to pasture for being honest.
Until we face this problem head on and deal with it, it’ll continue to come up. What this woman is facing is nothing new in this country. Blacks nationwide face this on their jobs every day, and we can consider it whining if we want, but just the fact that they face it, tells you that there’s a problem. It’s only a child or an immature individual that seeks to ignore what’s staring them in the face, hoping that if they ignore it enough, it’ll go away.
So, are you going to continue applying band-aids to a gaping wound, or are you going to actually tend to it?

I am an African-American female and I am appalled by these comments. This lady should be ousted for such derrogatory statements. Negative people come in all skin colors. I’m tired of race dividing us, and as long as people like Mrs. Kesting are in office, the trend will continue. And no Air, all black people do not hate white people… I don’t hate anyone. My Bible teaches me to love everyone and that’s what I will do. We hate some of the acts that have been perpetrated upon us but not the individual. Then again, I hate it when black people do stupid things against anyone… and I do mean anyone.

The problem with racism is that it is a double-edged sword. It seems to me that Mrs. Kesting has been left unoppressed long enough to become a commissioner of Cobb County. These crocodile tears need to end. You’re pandering to the worst impulses of your race, Mrs. Kesting, and from the bully pulpit to boot. Yours is the worst type of racism. Instead of building bridges, you’re destroying them.

She is a bigot and a racist and needs to be removed from office plain and simple. There is no room for “black” racists in this world any more than “white” ones. The difference here is that if a white person had made similar comments about working with blacks they would have been thrown under the bus, fired from the job, and pressured by the media into making a public apology. Quite the racist double-standard at work here.

Here’s what i don’t get. “America” believes that racism is a one way street-whites hate blacks because they are black. There has now been 2 cases of clear black towards white racism, and no one has done anything about it. Obama’s pastor (who can burn in hell for hating America as far as I’m concerned), and now this Commissioner. Can whites now get a version of the NAACP??
AIR was right, we are the most ‘hated’ group. I am a white male, under 30, and i smoke and drink. I didn’t own any slaves, and neither did my parents, nor theirs. After that, i have no clue. But guess what, SLAVERY IS A THING OF THE PAST IN THE U.S. EQUAL RIGHTS ARE HERE, so quit complaining.
Blacks aren’t being held back by whites, they’re being held back by their own idiocracies.
How about paying attention to school, studying books instead of making up lyrics so you can be the next rap star. How about dropping that racist grudge held over in your families for last 100 years??
my son is going to grow up in a very unfair world…every race, every sex, has some advantage over a white man. Think about it really hard-it’s the truth.

She is a racist in the worst sense, married to a white man but, talking about white people because she thinks that is what other black people want her to do. Well, she was wrong this time! She has done absolutely nothing for anyone in her district and continues to make excuses and use one scam after another to hang onto her rental slums that have been under foreclosure a dozen times (not to mention all the code violations). I have personally heard her speak publicly and could not make any sense out of what she was trying to say. It was really embarrassing that this was our “representative”. This should be a wake up call to the voters in her district. Do you want more of this? If not, get out and vote!!!!

For her to make those remarks was sad and stupid. What was she thinking, if she was thinking at all?
In this day and age, you have to be real careful what you say, especially on the topic of race.
I’m a black man, and I read her comments objectively, and interpreted it exactly the way it sounds. What even makes it worse is when you try to soften it up.
But before I speak on the matter anymore, let it be known that my opinion is based solely on what I read in this article. I would have to listen to her speech to be fully objective. We know what happens when the media says one thing, and then the actual evidence says another.

I am saddened that an elected Cobb County Commissioner/official would make racial statements such as these. Don’t we already have enough racial division in our society? It is apparent that this woman is unhappy in her job at the county. She sets a poor example for our youth to follow and does not appear to be a role model for younger females, black or white. Perhaps the county should re-evaluate her position as county commissioner. Or perhaps, a muzzle??

Kesting has been the most ineffective person on the Board of Commissioners that I’ve ever seen. She represents my district and she is an embarrassment every time she says anything at the meetings. She doesn’t know rules; she doesn’t know procedure; she doesn’t research any of the zoning applications that affects our district. She has no opinions on any zoning applications that are outside of her district. She can’t handle her own finances – how is she supposed to make intelligent decisions about what is good for Cobb County? And now she is spouting off about mean white women. This just affirms that this person should not be representing District 4 on the Board of Commissioners and I hope that message comes thru loud and clear in November!

I’m a white Jew. Ms. Kesting labels me the enemy. I sure would like to know how she “represents all people, regardless of religion or race”. What policies does she promote on behalf of her enemies? Is an example of “love your enemy” turning to her own kind (she’s the one making distinctions) and creating fictional accounts of her “enemies” to support her position?
Of course, like Tomascco points out, it would be entirely proper in her view to reverse the situation and discuss a white, male, Jewish politician discussing Ms. Kesting as the enemy, and acting accordingly, while expressing a view of “loving his enemy”. I’m sure Ms. Kesting would have no problem with that.

I can’t believe that anybody who is on any board of commissioners would not use correct grammar. “Lied on”??? What is wrong with saying that someone had lied about me? I’m getting really tired about hearing these types of phrases. “Hated on” is another one. Is it wrong to expect a commissioner to have a decent command of the English language? Don’t they need to at least have 10th grade grammar skills? I agree with some other postings. If a white politician had made these comments in a church while referring to the black race, it would be all over for that person. Finished. It’s called “racism” in that instance, not “black theology” as when these comments are spoken by blacks.

I can clearly imagine the public outrage that would have occurred if a white individual had made those comments. Either way is offensive. It justs seems to be swept under the rug when white people are the target. The outrage flows both ways. We will continue to have problems in our society until we judge people for who they are and quit using race as an excuse for poor behavior.

This is laughable. It’s funny. If you chose a side in this debate you’d be wrong in this councilwoman’s eyes. And I’m African-American (black for us old skoolers). This statement is drenched in stereotypes and hate mongering. You see, this type of hate has no stated direction, just ramblings. Even with Rev. Wright, his was a pointed discussion that clearly stated the problems and ills of our society, not who hates me at the office place. She’s in a multi-racial marriage for crying out loud. Race in our country is a major factor, no matter how we try to downplay it, its there. That 900 pound elephant in the room. Addressing it is the way we deal with it (much how blacks have dealt with it for generations, we just did it in church where our anger is displayed before the Lord and normally is left there in our sanctuarys on Sundays). This is just stupid. Obviiously she ran out of things to say and decided to go negative with no justification. Frankly she did it with the idea that no one was listening and this would not get out. What an idiot. AND I approved that statement.

You might want to look around at our world and our nation, as well as Cobb County and the rest of the metro region.
Not everyone is a Christian and not all Christians are born-again Christians.
Hate to break that bad news to you.
We non-Christians are all over the place, and really we’re not all that bad.
But some of you Christians have a sense of spiritual entitlement that is really obnoxious.
So many of us are and choose to be Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, atheist and you name it. There are all kinds of reasons why we don’t choose to be part of your faith.

While I’m all for frank talk on race relations, these kinds of comments are not helpful, IMHO, especially since there was no opportunity for two-way dialogue. I am one of Commissioner Kesting’s constituents and I am a white woman. The political season being what it is fuels inconsistencies of logic on both sides of the political spectrum. I find it highly questionable why it has taken over 2 months for this story to appear in print. I also find it curious that one of Ms. Kestings opponents is a black woman who may or may not be a member of this church. I’m certainly not laying any blame—just curiosity.
I know for a FACT that Commissioner Kesting is on call to ALL of her constituents—black, as well as white, on a 24/7 basis. I know because there have been several occasions—one in particular during which I saw her knock on the door of a neighbor, an elderly white woman who could not pay her mortgage, buy food, or pay any of her utility bills. Kesting came out to personally offer her help—it was a Saturday afternoon. If memory serves me, the Bible also says something about “judge not…” I think the pastor of Plesant Grove Mssionary Baptist Church may have forgotten this, along with many who have posted their comments re this article. God Bless Everyone!

If a white woman would have made the exact same remarks it would have been considered a hate crime. Discrimination is discrimination no matter what color you are. There should be no special treatment for this woman just because is black and speaking at a black event. Totally unacceptable behavior for any one. It appears segregation is on it is way back. For a group of people fought so hard to have equal rights the SAME as all others, now appears to just want to be surrounded by only people that are the SAME color. She made one comment and we dont know in what context she made it in or what her circumstances are at work. Maybe these “white women” she works with make her life hell because she is a christian? Maybe these “white women” dont like the perfume she wears and they give her grief about that? If these “white women” are nasty to her then she has a right to not like them. If a black person does not like a white person or vise versa, it does not mean they dont like them because they are white or black. It does not mean they hate all white or black people. If a white Judge had pulled what Judge Arrington did, we’d be hearing about some long forgotten Federal segregation laws broken ie. disbarment/charges. But of course Judge Cosby gets a pass.(and 15 min. of fame.)

In response to D.A. Martin’s comment - that’s all well and good that she helped an elderly white woman, but personally helping someone pay their bills is not what her job is as a commissioner. She needs to make decisions about the welfare and what is best for all of the people in her district. A few months ago, she actually voted to approve a zoning request to build another 270 apartments on Six Flags Road! How far removed can you be when you think THAT is a good idea?!? I want to know what she will do about builders plowing down trees to start a neighborhood and then abandoning the project. She does not respond to those types of questions. That happens a lot in the South Cobb/West Cobb area. She is just NOT an effective commissioner for District 4 and she obviously was elected because of the color of her skin. I hope those that voted for her have observed her questionable qualities for the past 4 years and will not vote for her again.

She is entitled to say this. But, as a Cobb County taxpayer, I want my elected officials to show great judgement and she showed poor judgement. I don’t work 60 hours a week and pay property taxes so someone can make incredibly stupid remarks in public. In my opinion, this is a reflection of the idiots of all races we put in office. Voters need to take control.

But what really bothers me is her poor grammar—good lord.

Her comments were “designed to motivate women?” How about paying your taxes, and fixing the code violations in your rental property? How did she get away with this for so long? And her lack of basic grammar. I moved into her district after she was elected, and it is hard to believe she unseated the incumbent. If she is re-elected, I will have lost all faith in the electoral process.

This is so stupid because why couldn’t she express whatever it is she was feeling. Better yet I don’t feel she did anything wrong. It wasn’t like she was standing up there telling a bunch of white lies. Everyday as an african american woman i face racism. Whether it’s on the job or at home in my community. I don’t know everybody is trying to ignore the fact that this is a reality in the world we live in. It’s not going to just go away so we might as well deal with this or one day I feel it’s going to be exposed in more serious fashions. Cause I’m sick and tired of being made to feel this is a white world this world belongs to all of us. And I pray everyday for change but the community I live in will proably have to deal with sooner than later. Because racial profiling on so many different levels are getting worse worse worse.

Thanks AJC for your typical racial divided commentary which serves no purpose but to divide us again in this election year.
Black people in America have more in common that they do with Africans in Africa so guess what, we are not going anywhere so we might as well learn to get along. Her comments were race baiting and you put this post to inflame typical ignorant people such as the guy that thinks all people are targeting white males.
Guess what? Who is running this country, White males. Who mess up the banking system? White males. Who fleeced the taxpayers with huge government contracts in Iraq? White males.
However these White males are connected and not you typical white males, so there is a class and moral/ethical issue you are taking out of context as usual with your bias reporting.
And the congregation denounced her speech, which is inappropriate for church where all people are suppose to go and find ways to deal with society in general.

Let me get this straight, she expresses that she works in a hostile environment, is speaking to a church audience, and states that Christians need to pray for non-Christians…and she is wrong? I gues she should work within the hostile environment filled with tons of micro-agressions, and keep quiet about it? If she is truly enduring agressions from White people, due to her race/ethnicity…her next conversation should be to an attorney.

It’s sad to see that Mrs. Kesting could not think of anything better to say with the little brain power she has proved to have since being in office. She basically combined all her knowledge or lack there of into one speech or spill. I’ve heard the other Commissioners at Townhall Meetings and have got to say, Kesting does not represent what Cobb County is about. When Kesting opens her mouth you have to wonder, where in the world did she get her information. She must’ve copied a speech off the internet and read it aloud at the Church. Google some of her speech and see all the hits you get. It’s going to be hard enough to put up with her until November. Hey Kesting, how about you right your letter of resignation tonight? or google one and copy it.

Those of you who think detest the comments of this individual have every right to be and I take it a step further with embarassment. I’m ashamed that this person stood before my church family and made these remarks. I assure you our congregation is one of inclusion and not exclusion. As an active member of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church I would like to state that the commentary espoused by Ms. Kesling was not in any way reflect the thoughts of our Pastor or our church body as a whole. Pleasant Grove seeks to be a church for all people, not just people of color. Ms. Kesling was invited to speak at a service celebrating the history of African Americans. She failed to celebrate a history that she also shares. As a member of the Grove, I know Rev. Dr. Randolph Scott, (a professor at both Kennesaw State University and Chattahooche Technical College as well a champion of civil rights in this community for many years) to be an honest and honorable man. There is no way Ms. Keslings comments went unchallenged by Rev. Dr. Scott. They were contrary to everything we know him to represent. The content of her speech was the subject of many conversations by our Pastor, church officers and congregants. With few exceptions it was the consensus of our church body that Ms. Kesling’s comments were inappropriate and not aligned with the “Good News of the Gospel” and how, if followed and applied to our daily lives, it would eliminate those issues that Ms. Kesling’s comments distorted. Pleasant Grove’s mission is to spread the word of God, not those individuals. I would also note that the women of Pleasant Grove are seeking Spiritual Excellence, we have as a group of believers, committed ourselves to walking in the light which is Christ Jesus. We are inspired by the word of God as dictated by the Holy Bible and motivated by our desire to be in the perfect will of God, not by the disappointing rhetoric of persons who think like Ms. Kesling. It should also be recognized that Dea. James Jackson Jr. is entitled to expressed his personal opinion on this subject; however, he does not speak for the Pleasant Grove Church family. It is unfortunate that Ms. Kesling chose to take what was intended to be a celebration of the historic position she holds in Cobb County to express such narrow views. It is my sincere prayer that she will reflect on her presentation and see the error of her ways. Cynthia Watkins, PGMBC Member

Not having heard the entire speech, I will not and cannot make any judgment based on some clips taken out of context. Typically, the racist Rethuglicon of Snobb county just can’t hold back. I note that many of the posts here start out ‘If this was a white person…’ This is just provides cover for these people to display their covert racism. For example, Boots said “I’m sure the black community is proud of their political candidates, starting with the CC BOE, Ron Sailors, Ms. Kesting and the list of embarrassing public officials goes on and on.
You get what you deserve until you start voting for the most qualified candidates and not just for the color of the candidate’s skin.”
If this isn’t an overtly racist statement, I don’t know what it would take. Boots must be a card-carrying member of the KKK or white supremacists. Clearly, Boots is the proto-typical racist Snobb county resident. This is the same county that keeps MARTA out because they don’t want ‘those people’ in their pure, white enclave. They have their own bus system to bring in the maids to clean their houses and gardeners to do their lawns and then make sure they leave the county. Just like they did in South Africa during apartheid. The stench of Rethuglicon elitist racism is thick and unmistakable here.
When you vote Rethuglicon, you vote against your own best interests. And the racists of Snobb county are living proof.

This lady was just speaking her mind. For her it was the truth, and she is probably right in her view. The problem is that a white person in the same situation could not say the same thing without being ostrasized, and possibly losing their job and most certainly their reputation.
We need to hold everyone to the same standard and stop bickering about any negative references to race on either side. Both blacks and whites should be able to lay in to one another every once in a while. It’s good for dialogue.

Yes, you are all correct in her poor command of the English language. My wife and I attended the Open House of the new fire station in Austell in our community last month. They asked her to stand up and give a little “speech”. Her “speech” consisted of simply reading the back of the printed program. Not only could she not read it properly, she could not conjugate a verb to save her life. I felt so sorry for Chairman Sam Olens and, Tim Lee, and the Fire Dept. people there. What an embarrassment. I was educated at South Cobb HS, so don’t give me that as an excuse. That’s her M.O when she does rarely show up at an event- quick hit & run, no effort at all into the duties of her office. What a joke. And a deadbeat and slumlord to boot. I hope she won’t be our Commissioner much longer. All I can say is, “Run Woody (Thompson) Run!”

Maybe she could do as Marvin Arrington did in court and tell all the “white” folk to leave Cobb County! She, as Marvin Arrington, are nothing more than “bigots” and as such, can never serve the “public” as they were elected to do! “Black History Month” - what a joke -Let’s have “US History Month” - which would allow “ALL” Americans to be involved in a truly grand celebration of the USA rather than being “spoon-fed” the BS of the “Black History” which only attempts to reinforce the desire of the “Black” community to blame anything AND everything on the “White” man! Racism is alive and well in Atlanta and while the “white” community has tried to be tolerant and move forward, it appears certain members of the “other” community continue to use “the race card” as the “CRUTCH” for there miserable lives! I am sure the reason the “Reverend Jesse Jackson” and the “Reverand Al Sharpton” are not visible is because they are reading and learning the scriptures from the “koran” so that they can advise Osama Obama! what does it say about you to pose such a ** question. do you not have any black friends. I as a black person do not assume that all white people are as radical as David Duke was. why is it white people think that any dumb/stupid statement by a black leader is a reflection on the entire black race. I don’t think that all white people are idiots because of George Bush. Not only does she not speak for black people neither do Jesse or Al. White people seem to think that black people always have to have a spokesperson. How about black and white people make at least one friend from the opposite race and really get to know that person so that you have a feel of each persons individuality and stop clumping everyone in the same bucket. Why can’t you people, white people, see that she was speaking for herself and from her heart which seems to be in a dark place. She has no business speaking to anyone in the church but should find per place on the pew and listen hard and often to the true message of Christ.
