What will Maury Povich do?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Starting today, Rite Aid rolled out national sales of over-the-counter paternity tests at more than 4,300 stores in 30 states, including more than 10 stores in the Atlanta metro area.
The Identigene DNA Paternity Test Kit costs $29 and comes with a $119 laboratory processing fee. Users swab the inside of the mouth to collect a DNA sample which is then sent to Identigene with consent forms and fees in a postage-paid return envelope. Confidential results, are available in three to five business days via mail, e-mail, or through a secured web site.
What in the world daytime talk show hosts like Maury Povich and Montel Williams do now? Those “Who’s the Daddy?” episodes are part of their regular rotation. And who can forget the follow-up episodes, “Who’s the Daddy? Part 3.”

I DON’T KNOW IF THIS IS SUCH A GOOD IDEA. I PREDICT MORE MEN GOING TO JAIL ON ASSAULT/BATTERY/ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGES AFTER THIS ONE.

I think it’s a good idea for various reasons. Most of the men in my family had “shot-gun” weddings and there have always been whispers of whether or not their first child is actually the daddy’s. This way the suspecting father will know for sure.

I am all for making people step up and take responsibility for bringing a child into the world, but I can’t help but think what a trashy world we live in!

The problem is that these tests are not court admissible. My wife provides this type of dna paternity test in a legal manner and she is constantly “re-testing” because folks don’t know the difference between an “at-home” test vs. a legal test.

I wonder if there’s a discount if you buy by the case.
It is nice that as a society we are so nonchalant about bringing a child into the world.

You are responsible for your own actions, and your actions have consequences!!!
If you don’t want the responsibility of a child, then have the common sense to use some sort of birth control. Men, this includes you!!! You don’t want to be a daddy, then cover it up!!!
Don’t always ASSUME your partner is taking care of birth control. Grow up, be an adult, take responsibility for yourself, and do what is right.

This may have been presented as a joke, but really it’s no laughing matter. I don’t understand why and how its just OK to have the ability and more so the need to do a paternity test at home! People do you realize what type of society we live in and understand that it is not progressing in the right direction?

What difference does it make when the court will just rule that the man who isn’t the father is still responsible?

All I can say is - it figures. Call it prudism or whatever you want, having sex with multiple partners almost requires that someone develop a product such as this. And Aurora is right that this is men’s responsibility, but the ultimate responsibility falls to the woman. Keep ‘em crossed, and you won’t be confused as to the babydaddy’s identity.

To have a child, I think you should have to go through the same rigorous background, mental health, etc. checks that you do when you adopt….and that all people be given a shot to “disable” their reproductive organs until they pass. I’m sick of reading about the ridiculous abuse and extremely tired of keeping people on lifetimes of welfare just because they pop out a kid every time they sleep with someone!!! I could care less about over the counter paternity tests.

Hmmmmm, for someone who doubts, $150.00 is not a bad price, and if you have to spend more for an ‘admissible’ test, at least you know you have a leg to stand on. Come on all you people who doubt paternity, this is your chance to find out for sure. ANYONE can pay for the testing…, so step on up to the plate and just do it once and for all! These should make great birthday and Christmas presents too!

I disagree that the woman is more responsible for the reproduction process than the man.
However, I remember a time (not that long ago) when the idea of having child out of wedlock was a HUGE deal.
Unfortunatly it seems that some people are spending more time picking out thier clothes for Friday night than the parent of thier offspring.
It is sad that as a society we are progressing in this direction

To borrow a phrase from my elders, “we are going to HELL in a handbasket!!” This, unfortunately, is a sign of the times. Even more unfortunate are the casual attitudes toward unprotected sex and its consequences. I agree with Kristin, some people spend more time deciding what outfit to wear than they do deciding who will parent their children.

This should be the beginning of the end of the Maury Povich Show. We’ll miss you, man.
