What’s next for Vick, Falcons?

We’re re-opening commenting on the Michael Vick indictment. Today, we want to ask, what do you think the Falcons will do?

Should they ride the legal storm out, hoping their $130-million quarterback can avoid jail time and a long-term NFL suspension? Is the investment too great to simply cut bait?

Or is it time to move on, and with whom as quarterback? Joey Harrington? Dante Culpepper?

Comments that don’t violate ajc.com’s Visitor Agreement will be posted.

It is sad that Vick’s career could possibly be over like this. I have to wonder if he knew this was a felony crime. Whether he did or didn’t know he will still have to face the consequences for this if he is found guilty. What now for the Falcons?

I hope the guy is thrown under the jail if the charges prove true. The scale of the operation he was reportedly running is sickening. And, guys, just a bit of simple marketing advice: if you’re going to open a dog fighting business, you might want to come up with a less ironic name than “Bad News Kennels”.

I am not surprised at this given Vick’s actions in recent years. He seemed a rather nice young man when he came to Atlanta but has gone downhill ever since. Is he guilty? I would think probably so. Will he be conviced? I hope so if he is guilty but high priced legal help will drag it on for years. Will he go to jail? I doubt it. Unfortunately, animal cruelty cases rarely bring the sentences they deserve. I realize this is not legally an animal cruelty indictment but rather gambling and some other charges but I do hope the jury in the long run takes the cruelty aspect into consideration in the sentencing. What about the Falcons? Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a d**n since I am a Saints fan but it is just another case of a Falcon acting like a thug.

Considering that the court of public opinion (or those that just look for any excuse to spout hate against him) will convict Vick whether he’s guilty or not…I’d say his career is in serious jeopardy at this point. The team could be screwed whether he plays or not. They will be distracted within the organization as well as having to deal with disruptive hateful & nasty football fans everywhere they go.

Just finished reading the sickening 18 page indictment. If you haven’t read it-go on, read it….and you too will be sickened!

Even if ONE TENTH of it is true, Vick and his little sick posse should be subjected to some of the lovely treatment these animals endured. “Rape stands,” electrocution, execution via shotguns…’training’ and the testing of animals to see if they were agressive enough-it’s all spelled out.

Talk about self-destructive people. Greed will get you every time….I guess making millions playing a game wasn’t good enough.

Read the indictment. Vick is a complete embarrassment!

By Mike

Not sure what the outcome will be. If he is guilty I hope that he gets what he deserves. It is a shame that people with the celebrity status…ie OJ, Michael Jackson, Heatly, Martha Stewart, and countless politicians do not get the same treatment by our justice system as the ordinary people. As far as what it means for the Falcons only time will truly tell. I am sure that Harrington is not the answer. Many of the Schaub faithful will come out, but I still feel that trading him was the right thing. He may end up being great, who knows…but they got a lot for an unproven QB. If Vick is indeed found guilty and does time, it will set the Falcons back a bit due to salary cap implications. McKay will definitely have to earn his money, and be quite creative with contracts the next couple of years. You will probably see some of the higher paid guys that don’t produce as much any more…ie Brooking and possibly Dunn walk after this season in favor of younger talent that is a little easier on the wallet. What ever happens I am still excited about the future of Atlanta with the young talent that they have brought in. I hope in camp and preseason they are just going to automatically make Harrington the next guy in line behind Vick. I believe Shokley deserves a shot. I think he would surprise a lot of people.

Tony, Vick is accused of killing like 8 dogs. To me killing a dog is just as bad as killing a human. Heck, dogs are more valuable than most humans anyway. I hope Vick gets the electric chair if he’s convicted.

Vick is in a bad situation, but he put himself there with the kinds of associate s he chooses to hang with. He is doomed if he wins this year because the NFL will want him out. If he has a losing season, the Atlanta fans will want him out. Either way, he will no longer be the QB in town after this year. Too bad for someone with so much talent. Playing in another city will be far better than the worse scenario———IN JAIL!!!!

…internet ate my post!…

Here it goes again:

If even ONE TENTH of the indictment is true, Vick and company deserve to be treated (or mistreated, as the case may be) as the dogs were.

Benoit was total scum; Vick is only marginally better, as he abused and killed DOGS.

Read the indictment-it is truly SICKENING. And…it’s truly hard to believe that the indictment was influenced by “public opinion.” Sometimes law enforcement does get it right…let’s hope this time is one of them!

By MacKenzie

Tony, are you serious?

Mr. Blank,

I am all for innocent until proven guilty but your actions shouldn’t wait for the judicial system. Your jury is the fan base and we like to associate ourselves with people of good moral character. You do not have that in Mr. Vick. Off the field he has let us down time and time again. You can either choose to rid the organization of him or we can force you to do it with our purchasing power. How unfortunate for Michael Vick and Atlanta. If I was Mr. Blank, suspend Vick for conduct detrimental to the team, save the money, go get Dante Culpepper, quick, who is a lot cheaper. Get out front of this. Who can complain, the League, the Player’s Association? Although Innocent until proven Guilty, a Federal Indictment hanging over one of the most important pieces of the team is not good. How long will this take to play out? How can Mike have his head in the game when he could possibly be looking at Federal time? And if the charges are true, WHAT THE HELL WAS HE THINKING? What a waste!!

Even though I am not a Falcons fan and do cheer against them I must say that as for a fan this really hurts to see your star player, role model be indicted on charges on animal cruelty. First I must say that the racial stuff needs to stop. This has nothing to do with him being of color it’s just plain and simple that there are facts that Vick was involved in something legal and has been indicted. I have two dogs and just the idea of what i have read on the indictment charges is sickening. If i were a Vick fan I would throw away anything of his. This is a shame to the wonderful city of Atlanta, to the fans, Mr. Blank, the NFL, kids who look up to him, and to the sports world. Regarding the “hating on Vick B.S.” —- Vick stepped in dog poop, tracked it through the club house, up to the front office —- indeed, right into Mr. Blank’s office.

It’s a helluva way to treat a man who made him wealthy beyond imagination —-who gave him chance after chance from giving the finger to the Atlanta fans (customers) to the airport fiasco and now to the thug lifestyle of fighting and killing dogs.

It’s just un-freakin’- believable that he would throw it away, but then again, some have said all along that he really wasn’t too smart.

You can’t expect your new coach (who I like) to field a team with this hanging over them. Look, many of you are not true Falcon Fans. I was raised in the state, and I cheered for the ‘Dirty Birds’! Once I enlisted in the Military, the Falcons came with me too! Mike Vick has said that he rarely (and let me reinterate that) rarely visited that house. Mike bought the house for a realitive. Let him speak, ok! Mike is a dependable guy. He doesn’t cower behind other people. He is a leader. Yes I am aware that Mr. Petrino is a little ticked off, but he is like his boss, so he has a right. In the military, police departments, any job, if you are accused of something, you have to fight your way out of that! Mike Vick will prove to everyone that he isn’t who everyone thinks he is. He is a leader. A champion. A friend. Let him have his chance to lead and defend himself.

And everyone is saying that he set the Falcons back 10 years. Yeah right. The Falcons are called the ‘Dirty Birds’. We fight! We win! If anyone should be blamed for what happened in the past it is MORA! We will overcome this obstacle then throw it back at the people who accuse of this. This is pathetic. You don’t have no one else to blame, so you have to attack someone who is trying to make a name for himself!

Read the entire indictment, particularly item 83. Vick is directly involved up to his neck. Anyone who defends this behavior just because he’s the QB of the Falcons ought to do time as well just to figure being a member of the human race is about.

I don’t think Vick will be convicted. Court is not about justice, it’s about which side has the highest paid lawyers and wins the debate contest.

But I hope everyone boycotts everything about the Falcons as long as they employ a dog fighter. The national press is going to savage not only the Falcons, but our city’s image and businesses will suffer as well.

For all of you pointing to the Duke Lacross case here are some clear differences… (1) there was hard evidence and eyewitness testimony that exonerated the Duke players. With Mike Vick we have the opposite, eyewitnesses with hard evidence in the form of money used to fund this operation. (2) Everyone presumed those “rich” Duke players were guilty from the beginning including a dirty prosecutor. Here the impotent Surrey County DA refused to do his job and looked the other way to protect Vick.

Folks, these are serious crimes. The indictment provides clear detail about not just a couple of disorganized dog fights, but a systematic plan over years to purchase dogs, breed them, torture them and use them for gambling on a piece of property that was specifically designed and modified for DOG FIGHTING!!! Even if you don’t think dog fighting is a big deal, going to this level to finance an operation which is illegal is a big deal.

I was willing to give Vick the benefit of the doubt when it was possible that his family simply took his money and abused his trust, but not any more. These allegations are disgusting. Being a good athelete does not excuse such sadistic behavior.

MR BLANK - PAY ATTENTION TO THESE COMMENTS - ALL FALCONS FANS WITH ANY SENSE OF DECENCY WILL NOT STEP FOOT INTO THE GA DOME UNTIL MICHAEL VICK IS GONE - AND HE CAN TAKE BABINEUX WITH HIM TOO

bobby:

Having been an abused wife, years ago, I feel like I can answer this. Abused wives choose to stay in or exit their situation.

Did these dogs have the same choice? (and yes, I’m a vegetarian.)

I don’t want Vick to be hanged in public. But I would think it only fitting for him to be subjected to some of the things he subjected these animals to. Since you obviously don’t think Vick did anything wrong, I would think this would be agreeable to you, yes?

I am, for one, relieved by this turn of events. Being a Bulldogs fan, I can rest well knowing that DJ Shockley will be leading the birds no later than mid-season 2009. Talk about a character guy, He’s accessible, incredibly athletic and he’s a leader. DJ Shockley won the SEC championship in his only year as a starter-against one of toughest teams in college sports. Shockley can run, pass and learn a thick playbook. He’s smart and a gentleman. Get ‘em, DJ!

being indicted is not proof of guilt! certainly his actions and recent events leave room for doubt. But we need to see what they actually have on him and see how the trial goes. If he is found guilty then he deserves what gets. He really has been pretty stupid about a lot of things. But I wouldhate to convict him on public opinion and then find out that he really was innocent. Time will tell>

The statement from the Falcons FO published on their website tonight leads me to believe that they would actually take the PR hit (keeping Vick) rather than the cap hit by letting Vick go. Guess Blank really only cares about the money?

Vick will never take another snap in the NFL. An ESPN columnist nailed this about a month ago. Once the Federal authorities executed a search warrant, an action that the local authorities were reluctant to do against a local hero, Vick’s fate was sealed. Department of Agriculture, IRS, and FBI were involved. There was a brand new Federal Law that addressed dog fighting.

I was a great fan of Vick’s. I loved to watch him play. He was a rare talent. Too bad he is such an idiot.

Can’t wait to see the spin Arthur Blank, the Falcons, and even Frank Beamer put on this on. The real spin will be watching the Falcons go down the toilet trying to hang on to this time and again proven piece of trash.

By The Facts -- Vick Most Likely Guilty

July 17, 2007 9:13 PM | Link to this

Vick is most likely guilty folks. That’s the reality of the situation. The fact of the matter is that the Feds have over a 95% conviction rate when they bring charges. If the feds bring indictments, it’s because they have overwhelming and irrefutable evidence that shows a person committed a criminal act. The Feds simply have way too many fish to fry and other things to worry about to waste their time on any case that has flimsy or questionable evidence. The Feds will only bring charges if they are nearly 100% certain that they will get a conviction if the case goes to trial.

wishing vick to die and burn in hell? Did he molest some children. People like this are the extremist, like those Christian groups who kill themselves because of a meteor or those crazy muslims who think they are promissed 1000 virgins upon killing someone in a suicide bombing. Most people believe that this is wrong if Vick did it but the 5% extremist on both ends of the spectrum turns this into a racial issue. All it takes is one estremist from either side then reasonable thinking goes out the window. Side note: These dogs were not breed to be friendly, they were created to fight. Look at the history

Mr. Blank is a 100% class act. Michael Vick is a huge embarrassment for him and to the Falcon organization. Unless Vick performs beyond his past accomplishments, he will be traded before the season ends. It’s not a question of his guilt, but by the shame he brings to the Falcons. He should be traded before the season starts, but Mr. Blank will hang on to him until his guilt is established.

who cares about PITA or dog fighting? There are much worse things going on in our community. So much hate and fair weather fans out there. Learn to stick by the organization, not one player that has not been convicted of anything! MIKE VICK HAS NOT BROKEN THE NFL’S CONDUCT POLICY, SO HE WILL NOT BE SUSPENDED. For those of you that say trade him, you are ignorant and do not understand the collective bargaining agreement, no team is going to take on that contract in the middle of all this situation. This is not an issue of race. This is an issue of right an wrong. Vick is a low life, that is the bottom line.

If this was a white guy, you would find pretty much all white people condemning that person for these despicable and deplorable charges.

To people who are mindlessly playing the race card on this: Get that massive chip off your shoulder and get a clue. It will make your life a whole lot better.

To do the things alleged in the indictment takes a special kind of evil. It denotes lack of conscience and soul. Although this is only an indictment, not a conviction, the federal prosecutors are NOT Mike Nifong. Somehow I think that they may have their act a little more together than that clown. If you’re waiting for action from the Falcons or the NFL, keep waiting. Neither Roger Goddell nor Arthur Blank has the ball$ to do anything until the courts work things out. Blank will never get rid of the object of his “man crush.”

**The Vick story is definately taking a turn for the worse. I heard the story on my way home today and people in Atlanta are pretty indicative of the people across the country when it comes to Mike Vick. You either love him or hate him. He is probably the most polarizing figure in sports not named Barry Bonds. But the thought of that is rather perplexing. It’s easy to understand why so many people are divided on Bonds, he is portrayed as a selfish, me first, cheater who will do anything to put himself before his team.

But the Vick dynamic is different. The minute Vick took over for a struggling Chris Chandler he was both revered and detested by the Atlanta fanbase. It was difficult to comprehend initially because the Falcons franchise had little success during their history, and you would think that a potential star would be just what the doctor ordered. But Vick would not conform to mainstream society. He sported the traditional cornrows, eccentric jewlery, baggy clothes, and embraced the urban look. He represented the marginalized, the undervalued, and the underrepresented members of society. Despite Vick’s early success, dramatic playoff win at Lambeau Field, trip to the NFC championship, pro-bowl, consecutive sell-outs, games no longer being blacked out, season ticket waiting list, and record revenue from luxury boxes and sponsors. Many of the fans would not embrace the “new” face of the franchise.

Vick represents a threat to the “traditional” quarterback. Football has been dominated by two traits, Speed and Strength. The quarterback position is the only position where an average athlete can overcome his lack of speed and strength with intelligence. A receiver can’t overcome his lack of speed with intelligence. A lineman can’t overcome his lack of stength with intelligence. But a high school football coach can groom his son to be a quarterback though preparation and repetition. It’s the only position that is an equal opportunity employer. If you didn’t inherit superior speed, or incredible size and strength you still had hope. Because a smart player can still succeed at the quarterback position. Vick threatened the way the position is played and if the game evolves to the dual threat quarterback then many will be excluded from the sport.

So it is only natual for some people to not appreciate his style of play. Although his passing statistics were not eye popping, he still found ways to win games. And perhaps he’ll find a way to eluse his next obstacle and continue to revolutionize the quarterback position**.

Jim Mora, Sr was spot on when he called his son’s quarterback a “coach killer”. The only one in this whole situation who made out well is Jim Mora, Jr- former Falcons head coach- who got out while the getting was good. Mike Vick and his brother have been coddled since high school. They are brilliant athletes but they lack that one thing that makes people not crazy.

I just noticed the question being asked of this blog. I think the next part of the saga involves Vick playing a tense season this year and being suspended next summer. It will take at least a year to play out.

Pamela,

I don’t see how this relates to the Duke Lacrosse case. They threw those kids under the bus at the very beginning. The Feds and local authorities have been treating this case with kid gloves for the last few months before indicting Vick. This isn’t some knee jerk reaction. They must have some fairly decent evidence against Vick if they are going to prosecute him. That doesn’t mean he will be convicted, but its a bad sign that he was indicted to begin with. You may be right that the fans are rushing to judgement, but animal cruelty is a very polarizing issue. Its the gruesome details of Vick executing dogs that have set off this firestorm. Mr. Vick better invest a huge portion of his signing bonus for the best law team in the country.

Not a very good quarterback and apparently not a particularly good human being either. He really has not done much for this team on the field and now he is causing it great harm off the field. I believe he had problems in college, the herpes bit, the water bottle incident at the airport, and now this. Really….this was not to hard to predict and would have come sooner or later. The NFL needs to continue to take a strong stand against unacceptable behavior.

Dear Mr. Blank,

If he plays another down in Atlanta, I have bought my last ticket. If you think the Fed’s are mean wait until you team plays in front of thousands of barking fans. I can understand standing behind your player when he takes a water bottle through a security gate with a false bottom. I can understand saying nothing while he is being sued by woman for god only knows what. I can understand standing by you man when he does not appear before congress or flips off the world but… The sum of the events are now not only embarrising to your team but to a city. I have no doubt that your team will suffer without the services of a star but this star is now sheding light on all the things that are bad and nothing comes to mind that is good cut your losses and if that team goes 0-16 I will be there but if you allow this self centered person back on your field, you will never get another dime from me….
