Wanted: Money-saving ideas

Gwinnett County commissioners started a new program this week that will put $1,000 in the pockets of employees who point out a way to save money. The ideas have to be put into play, of course. The idea was pushed by Commissioner Lorraine Green.

What about citizens? Bet you can give you an earful on how to save tax dollars.

Which prompts us to ask: Who else out there has money-saving ideas for Green and her fellow commissioners? Send us your ideas.

Sorry, no cash for your answers. The best we can do is publish the best ideas.

Gloomiest day for you too?

We here at ajc.com had just a second to peer out our 8th-floor window this morning. We were stunned at how gloomy it was out there. Simply stunned.

Turns out, it’s supposed to be that way.

A health psychologist in Wales devised a formula that shows today, Jan. 23, is the gloomiest day of the year.

So tell us — is it? Or will there be another, even gloomier day?

Commenting is now closed. Thanks to all who responded. … And cheer up. It can only get better.

No more McMansions?

Are you feeling overwhelmed by a McMansion next door and happy that Mayor Shirley Franklin has ordered a temporary halt to big, new houses in Atlanta intown neighborhoods. Or are you furious at the idea that government can say “no” to a mega-castle? The moratorium halting construction on infill housing in five hot real estate markets intown — north Buckhead, Virginia-Highland, Morningside-Lenox Park, Ansley Park-Sherwood Forest and Lake Claire — lasts until Feb. 6 when the City Council will vote on whether to extend it 120 days. Anybody think size restrictions should be applied outside the city of Atlanta?

Should the U.S. make a truce with al-Qaida?

Al-Jazeera on Thursday broadcast portions of an audiotape purportedly from Osama bin Laden, saying al-Qaida is making preparations for attacks in the United States but offering a possible truce to rebuild Iraq and Afghanistan.

The tape did not offer details of a truce.

Do you think it is a good idea? If so, what terms?

What do you think of Wayne Hill’s return to politics?

Former Gwinnett Commission Chairman Wayne Hill is getting back into politics.

Hill, who has been blamed by some and praised by others for Gwinnett County’s booming growth, will run for state House District 98. The district covers the north Gwinnett communities of Sugar Hill, Suwanee and Buford.

Hill, 63, served three terms as Gwinnett chairman from 1993 through 2004.

What do you think of Hill’s return to politics? What kind of representative do you think he’ll be? What should be the major concerns of the representative from Dist. 98?

You write the caption!

In this photo by Gwinnett News photographer Jason Getz, Jake, a 4-year-old hound, takes his duties as guard dog a little too seriously, jumping into the driver’s seat while owner Vince Mara of Lilburn makes a quick run into the Publix.

We asked our readers to write a caption for this picture and here are some of the best ones. Commenting is now closed.
