So far, so good. The two times I’ve bought used, I did business with CarMax and Auto Nation, but bought low mileage Nissans and did extensive research on-line before shopping in person. Test-drive was also very intensive. I love doing business where the price is on the window, no sales pressure. Both places offered me a loan almost comparable to what I’d already arranged with my bank. (Still driving the 97 Maxima, and keep my fingers crossed nobody hits me.)

People who buy a used car and expect it to run like a brand-new car are the problem, not the used car dealerships. Buying a used car does require research, and to have the car checked out by a mechanic. The man in this story admits to not having the car checked out. He bought a high-end luxury car for cheap, what does he expect? This is yet another example of people not wanting to be responsible for their own mistakes. Yes, if the dealership altered the mileage it is dishonest, but ultimately it is up to the consumer to be responsible for their actions. Maybe the term “As Is” is not descriptive enough.

I learned first hand that GA doesn’t protect buyers. For instance, did you know that car on the lot that has over 400 miles is considered used by your insurance company? Your dealership may have never sold it and will sell it to you as a new car. I trusted my brother-in-law (I know, bad idea) who worked at a dealership in Duluth and ended up with a car I paid $5000 too much for. I found this out when I totalled it that night. That nightmare took two months to sort out. I had to pay for a car I didn’t own and still get another car so I had transportation! I bought my car through CarsDirect.com and had the BEST experience.

Always buy a used car from a franchised dealership and buy extended warranty everytime…. there are ways to protect yourself
