Name that — university?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Gwinnett University Center, now used as a satellite campus for other colleges, soon will be a school unto itself. But it has no name. What do you think Georgia’s newest four-year state university should be called? Gwinnett State University? Button Gwinnett U.? Anything but Button Gwinnett U.? Here’s what ajc.com readers came up with.

“What’s in a name”?
Exactly!
Great question. I’m sure the name will be reserved for some great or not so great politician or educator so as to memorialize their name. Which is much more important than providing an education to a deserving student.
I feel a better idea though would be to auction off the naming rights, much like many of the stadiums used for professional sports, to the highest bidder. Using the money to set up a scholarship fund for needy students.
But understanding the politics in Gwinnett I’m sure it will receive a moniker enshrining a name like? Alvin Wilbanks?

I’m a student at “the college.” I have 2 ideas, UGA @ Gwinnett, keep it simple. Another option, University of GA - Gwinnett, or UGG, the sound we students make trying to get to school off that piece of crap highway aka 316.

I think the best name is always the strongest and most simple. My pick would be:
The University of Georgia-Gwinnett, or the UG-G
In New York and Wisconsin, two states within which I have spent most of my adult life, there are large state university systems that keep it simple and memorable - State University of New York-(campus location name), or SUNY schools; in Wisconsin, it is always a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee or Waukesha or Green Bay (UW-M) - easy to remember, strong in location.
The problem with using someone’s name is that outside of Georgia, no one will know anything about the namesake of the school. It won’t ellicite any response. A state school should reflect the state, and our university system, which is strong and should stand proud.

The University of Georgia at Lawrenceville. could be UGL or UGAL. The name would maintain the prestige of graduate from a UGA system campus for future alumni, plus the these state campus names are getting too long and clumsy. The others could be renamed UGA-Carrolton, UGA-Columbus, UGA-Stateboro, etc.

Please name the newest college/university in The State of Georgia as “GEORGIA GWINNETT UNIVERSITY”. That is a fitting title for a college to be so named in the county it will reside and hopefully the residents and the aspiring students will appreciate the fact that this county is trying to improve its educational status here and in the country.

It should NOT be named after, or have anything sounding like, UGA, or the University of Georgia. The ONLY current college that it should be honorably tied to namesake-wise, should be Perimeter College. Names of inididuals contributing to the history of Gwinnett County should be reserved for individual colleges of study names, i.e. Wilbanks College of Social Sciences, and such.
We already have a UGA, a Georgia State, and a Georgia Tech. All of Georgia’s colleges and universities tend to utilize the states name. It would seem more sense to divert from using “Georgia” in the college’s name to be unique.

Georgia has a unique opportunity to honor a man of peace, a man of God, a man concerned with Humanity, for once giving public recognition to humanity’s value as opposed to captains of industry or political lineage. Carter University.
Jimmy Carter has demonstrated the best of humanity and illustrated a life anyone could aspire to replicate. Truly the American Dream. Farmer, President, World Leader on Peace. He epitomizes what our founding fathers believed could be available in this country for common man, the very blessings of Liberty. To self determine and become better and greater individual and work for the betterment of the whole.
My vote, especially in these very troubled times, is for Georgia to honor a native son who represents the greatest of American values. Carter University.

As a student at that new university center, I think that the most appropriate name would be Central Georgia University set forth by Jane and Connie above to denote all of the geographic requirements in the name while maintaining a level of uniqueness to set the fledgling institute apart from other fine institutions. Or we could always call it UCLA (the University Center closest to the Lawrenceville Area) ;) for those jokers above…….

To TK - the Empire State is actually New York State; it is on their state crest.
To Justin - while I agree that President Carter is a man of peace and has tried to do his best for humanity, I do not agree that the same man deserves such an honor. The past President is and has been out of step with his state, its citizens and their needs for a long time. This is a man who most recently betrayed his state by the unprecidented writing of a letter to a military review board favoring the a New England submarine base over one in his home state in desperate need of saving. His legacy is good but very flawed.

Lawrenceville State University
Everything in this county is referred to as “Gwinnett” - so it’s time for a city to be acknowledged. Lawrenceville is the county seat and I believe Gwinnett’s largest city. Also, no school bears its name (unlike high schools in Norcross, Duluth, Grayson, Dacula).
By the way, some of these other suggestions are awful. Don’t name it after a highway or living person, and I SERIOUSLY SUGGEST that y’all brush-up on your geography to realize what part of the state we are in (not in the east, central, middle, mountains, etc).

I think Martin Luther King, Jr. University is fit. Georgia is steadily becoming a proving ground for minorities and naming a public University after the state’s most reknown minority figure is more than fitting. The only other university named for an African-American in Georgia is Morris Brown College. Dr. King made an impact on all our lives no matter what race or ethnicity we are. A university in his name would create a legacy or atmosphere of striving to do better and overcoming monumental challenges despite incredible odds one may face.

I’m for something using Lanier such as Lanier State University or Lanier University. This can be a geographic thing, named after a famous Georgian and still sounds fairly prestigious (although they may be saving this one for Gainesville in the future).
Otherwise I like Peachstate University.
Don’t put Atlanta in it because it isn’t actually in Atlanta and this will just be deceiving folks that want an urban school and scaring away folks that don’t.
They couldn’t do a UGA-Gwinnett or UGA-Larryville because the school isn’t going to be affiliated with UGA. This is not the case with the systems in NC, SC, TN, CA, etc.

We ought to call it Auburn University after the nearby town and former well-known speed trap of Auburn, GA. This way, all those kids who can’t get in UGA will be able to go to an Auburn University where their Hope Scholarships can be used.

We have to remember that this school will have to get national attention and receive funding. And on that note I have to go with the UGG idea. University of Georgia- Gwinnett. Because anything else will be hard to attract outside and international students.

I think it should be either Carter University or something like that (maybe Carter State University) or Northeast Georgia University. Carter because of Jimmy Carter or Northeast because of the location, northeast Georgia. I KNOW it should NOT be anything related to UGA.

I like the sound of that. Gwinnett County is probably the most diverse of all the suburban Georgia counties, and I feel that this name would explain it all: Not only for Gwinnett County, but for the Atlanta metropolitan area, period…….

Anything but Carter University, if we are going to name this new institution after a GA politician it should be Zell Miller. Without Miller there would be no hope scholarship, the Hope scholarship has given so many students the chance to complete their degree I think it is only fitting to give Zell the imortality of having an school named after him. He was one govenor of GA that new what the value of education.
