So, This Is What The Bottom Looks Like
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
That loud THUD that echoed though the crisp fall air last night was the sound heard when hitting rock bottom.
This is as low as it gets. We have sunk as low into the abyss as possible…it gets no deeper than this.
Can’t get any “bottom-er”.
We woke up this morning to find that the worst possible scenario has become reality.
No I’m not talking about the Republican Party and the thumping it got in the elections on Tuesday. And, no, I’m not speaking of the stock market over the past month and a half.
I’m referring to the fact that today…Wednesday November 5, 2008 we find that our Atlanta Thrashers are at the bottom of the NHL standings.
The combination of a 2-1 Islanders win over the Rangers and overtime loss by the L.A. Kings to the Anaheim Ducks has left the Thrashers one point behind New York and tied with the Kings at 8 points. However, given the fact that Atlanta has played one game more than Los Angeles that means the Thrashers’ .333 Points% place them dead last in the league.
All of this in spite of last Sunday’s 5-3 win over the Florida Panthers.
Well, at least it took almost a month into this season to get to this point whereas last year it was right off the bat.
Looking for silver linings?
Well the Thrashers will get an opportunity to do something about their predicament as early as tomorrow night when the New York Islanders pay a visit to Philips Arena. A win for the home team will lift them out of the basement and, possibly, as high as 13th place in the conference, (depending on the outcome of the Panthers vs. Kings game later that night).
Let’s also keep in mind that at this time last season, the Thrashers had exactly 8 points after 12 games played and were at or near the bottom of the pile but by Thanksgiving they had worked their way to a record of 11-10-0 for 22 points and were back in the thick of contention.
So history proves the ship can be righted in fairly short order and there can be change made from the bottom up.
(I’ve heard that line somewhere recently but I just can’t remember where).
Also, this time around Atlanta has a much better head coach dealing with the team then the one who was behind the bench after the 0-6-0 start last season. John Anderson and Co., I believe, are the right men to handle this job this team.
Now, as can only be expected there are rumblings in regards to whether or not Don Waddell needs to be on alert for the swinging ax of accountability. Craig Custance recently took up this subject and, according to Bruce Levenson, his job is safe for now.
If I may be allowed my two cents here even though any other NHL organ-I-zation or for that matter, any other professional sports franchise would have long ago decided to make a change in the front office by now, the fact of the matter is that if Waddell was not fired after last season then I highly doubt ownership will make a move this early in the season.
Despite the history
Despite the record
Despite the half-empty arena
Despite the decisions made
Despite, it seems, all logic
Don’t look for any change in this particular office.

It’s amazing that it was easier to get Barack Obama elected than it is to get Don Waddell ousted. I’m tellin’ ya. Waddell needs to contact some cookware manufacturer to be their spokesman. It works for pretty much any Teflon product.
Can you imagine it? “Hi, I’m Don Waddel, General Manager of the Atlanta Thrashers. That’s a hockey club. In the NHL. Anywho, none of my decisions are attached to any accountability. No matter what I do wrong, nothing sticks! I’m clean as a whistle! Just like (supply company name here) products. When you cook with these, clean up is a breeze. Just like my season-ending press conferences.”
But, it is what it is. I root for Waddell to improve. What ELSE can I do?

I’m really not freaking out as of this moment. We haven’t played a game since Sunday, and we won’t play till tomorrow. So all these teams have just playing their games at hand. It’s not like the point are out of reach. If we win tomorrow and the next game, we are in contention to get in the top eight. Again, it is so so early in the year. Army once said to win the Southeast you just need one good month. November is our best chance in terms of a schedule. So take what you will, it’s just too early to freak out, and this is from someone who did after that Devils game.

We have the inside track to Tavares or whomever, that is the ultimate prize of this build year, so that is good news!
Even better news is the Custance interview with Levenson. Sheesh, he didn’t even give Waddell the dreaded vote of confidence. That interview sounded promising, is that accountability I see on the horizon?

Hi RAWHIDE. I think it’s time we start trading and/or waiving some of the dead weight around here. The following players have not proven they are worthy of sticking around…
PERRIN, “CRUSHED”, SLATER, HEDBERG, WILLIAMS, BOULTON(or)THORBURN, and (possibly) WHITE…
I am ready to let some of these Wolves like STUART, LAVALLEE, STERLING, MACHACEK, HOLZAPEL to get a chance…
What do you think???

Thank God no one is itching to pull the trigger yet. One issue I have seen so far is the constant line shuffles. I like Anderson but shouldn’t he stick with the same lines for longer than one shift? How can anyone develop any chemistry on the line up?

I agree NascarDave, Slater has to GO…
White has redeemed himself early… We shall see.
I still am completely beyond amazement when you hear Mr.Potty Mouth speak, he is a complete IDIOT when it comes to running a professional sports team. My question is… Would he keep a division manager at his company that year after year after year fails to reach is business goals…?
Sports is no different, you simply cannot put it in a bag and take it home.
waddell is a failure in ALL aspects and the longer these STUPID owners keep the SOB around the more STUPID they look.

Nascardave- go back to drinking beers and watching cars go round in circles… apparently that is all your mind can comprehend.
Outside of slater and moose getting off the ice all the guys you listed have made improvements from last year OR are doing their jobs they were brought here for. Perrin= PK man, Crusher=set up kovy (2A last game), williams (2G, 3A this year.. he is getting his stuff together), boulton/thornburn= a pain in the * for the other team (which they are doing rather well), and white= leading point scorer… can you seriously say he has to go. he is on pace for almost 90 pts right now.
I’m also going to guess that you think Kovy isn’t doin good enough for you either. How about you apply to ASG to take Waddell’s job so we can all laugh at you when you can’t get a player to sign here because you can’t say anything without your “nuff said” at the end. Please, get off the boards till you know something about the sport.

NASCAR Dave, and all of the other bloggers, have as many playoff victories under their belt as Waddell. Besides, has Waddell kept Hossa, Savard, Brunette,…well heck anyone worth keeping?
So what’s the point? Anyone could perform as well as Waddell, even stendec.

From Custance’s article: *”It’s way too early. I think we’re three games out of first place,” he said. “We have a new coach. We really have to give it time. Our attendance always struggles this time of year between high school, college and pro football, and there has been beautiful weather. I really think it’s too early.”
According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Waddell has one year left on his contract after this season. The Thrashers also are still paying former coach Bob Hartley’s $1.2 million contract that expires after this season.*
Plus, Levenson said, “We look at the management position ‘all the time.’”
Except that I highly regard Craig Custance, I thought this came straight from The Onion. I do have to wonder … if Bruce is aware of how far the Thrashers are out of first place, (Rangers have something like 21-points,) how much time and how many more games have to pass before a statement like, “We’re mathematically eliminated from 1st place” escapes his lips. Even if we’re only talking about the SE Division leadership. Truthfully, that will be sometime in March. At which point, Bruce Levenson will probably say, “Well, what GOOD would come from firing him now(March 2009)? We’re so close to the Draft, and in lottery position, why make the change? Why tear it down? It doesn’t make any sense to do that.”
What did Forest Gump say? “Stupid is as stupid does.” For what it’s worth, I don’t believe Bruce Levenson has ANY INTENTIONS whatsoever to hold accountable one Don Waddell for the results of this season. He knows what he’s doing. He just doesn’t care to ‘share the plan’ with fans who don’t want to hear what ‘the plan’ really is. In short, he’s trying to obfuscate as long as he can and to see who’s buyin’ it … hook, line an sinker.
Look folks. I’m not trying to be negative here. But one of the owners (Levenson) just blamed The Weather for the state of the franchise. What’s next? “The sun was in our eyes?” Or “My dog ate Savard’s contract.” Or “The Hossa paperwork was lost in the mail.” Bruce Levenson, in TOTAL SERIOUSNESS, just blamed competition from OTHER SPORTS for the attendance.
What the??
Can you EVEN BEGIN TO IMAGINE … an owner in a different city implying that the NCAA, NFL, and even, gasp, high school sports, are impossible competition, head-to-head with his product? It’s just that FALL represents so much difficulty?? If that isn’t a “wake-up” call, what is? What WOULD BE a “wake-up” call, for Bruce?

Maybe this was ownership’s and management’s plan all along. They have hit rock bottom of the NHL standings, so now the claims that they are “headed in the right direction” almost have to be true…there is no other direction to head. Well done ASG and DW.

Russ, but you’re forgetting something. Something VERY IMPORTANT. You totally left out all the bags of pucks and equipment that we’d get for our discarded players. I’d wager, that with such a GM, we’d lead the league in pucks, water bottles, waffle pads, and so forth.

I loved Brendan’s comments…”the dog ate Savard’s contract…the Hossa paperwork was lost in the mail”, etc. Hilarious!
What’s even more humorous is that the same old sheep would still come on here and continue embarrassing themselves by defending the tripe consistently fed to us by this organization.
Where have all the sheep gone, by the way, now that we are at the bottom one month into the season?

The problem is not that the contracts got lost, it was when they were presented Savard and Hossa looked at Waddell and started laughing.
Then Savard mumbled something about being close to family and Hossa ducked his eyes and said let me think about it as he slipped out of the locker room.
With Waddell we never had a chance…

Sage, even the organization’s attempted excuses are lame. Right now, the excuse is … It’s too early to make a change. Last year, it was … say it with me, too late to make a change.
Chuckling. It’s like a comedy of errors. It reminds me of the award-winning film, with Zero Mostel and Phil Silvers, [“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966)”] (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060438/). (I saw it On Demand, not its original run. Sheesh.) I just can’t figure out if Waddell is “Marcus Lycus,” the flesh peddler, or “Pseudolus,” the slave trying to dupe his owners into his freedom. Now that I think about it, Waddell is Pseudolus, the lovable, bumbling, plotting con-artist shyster. Marcus Lycus is Bruce Levenson, his dupe.

Levenson and Waddell should be invited to the monster truck event at the Georgia Dome in January of 2009.
Since they would have no idea of what is going on, we could pay the announcer to encourage Levenson and Waddell to stand on top of the line of cars the monster trucks jump. When Levenson and Waddell question their positioning, each would be told they are the best seats in the house.
Afterwards, the fans would be told the two fools, that ended up on the grill of the trucks, were yankees, one from Detroit and the other from Washington D.C.
The fans would erupt afterwards singing Skynyrd songs. A good night for all in attendence.
Problem solved.

Brendan — I had the exact same reaction when reading that story…I cannot believe he actually blamed the weather.
Could you imagine Truett Cathy blaming lowered profits at his Chick-fil-A on a boom in the orange growing season? On El Niño?
It’s pitiful, simply pitiful…like you said, if it wasn’t Custance writing that piece I would’ve assumed we were reading an article written by The Onion or reading the script of a SNL skit.

Brendan, I’d love to have Pseodulus as our GM. He’s thoroughly accomplished at being a sneaky, schemeing conniver and is rather unscrupulous as well. But in a cute, loveable sort of way. All in all, he’d make a fine NHL GM - at least until the BOG meeting where all his devious dealings would be exposed.

Anyone else waiting for Kovy to pull a “Patrick Roy moment”? After another miserable performance, storm off the ice and tell the owners that he will never play another game for us again. Oh, but that would require our owners to ACTUALLY BE THERE.
Maybe pull an Abrahamian (Swedish wrestler who go !*@&# out of a gold in Beijing and walked off the medal stand leaving his bronze behind)by taking off his jersey at center ice and walking away…

Ranallo, exactly correct. It wouldn’t happen. Chick-Fil-A has a good thing going, and if they experience a “hiccup” along the way, they’ll make adjustments to correct it. In fact, rubbin’ my chin, didn’t they just do just a deal with the Thrashers for some ticket promotion? “Chick-Fil-A Family Nights,” or something? I’d wager that the “Eat More Chikin” crowd made out well in their negotiations.
glovesave29, I don’t think Kovalchuk is there … yet. But I must confess … that I think he’s waiting out the ownership … waiting for the announcement of the Waddell firing. And if Waddell doesn’t get the ax, after a decade of running the show, with nearly annual lottery draft finishes, for the most part, it will BECOME CLEAR that he won’t re-sign in the 2009 offseason. And if training camp opens, with an un-signed Kovalchuk, we’ll know he won’t finish the season with us. But we’re not there yet. Kovalchuk might still re-sign with us. But the ownership has to show some kind of pulse. And, they’ve got to sit young Kovy down, like Minnesota did with Gaborik, to EXPLAIN THE MASTER PLAN to him … so that he can make an informed decision about his future with the Thrashers organ-I-zation. And if that “sit down” meeting never takes place, it won’t be some shocker that Kovy leaves for greener pastures. That’s not how to deal with a Superstar. If they can’t figure out what #17 means to their organization, heaven help them.
kracker, your post cracked me up. I agree, Pseudolus would be a BETTER GM than Waddell.

Some of these guys are just not contributing, and since we are in a “Build Year”, I would like our prospects to get a fair chance of making the team and sticking here, not being BLOCKED by dead weight such as SLATER/PERRIN/”CRUSHED”/WILLIAMS… Get my drift???
And also, looking at our 3 Netminders, I will say what I said this summer… MOOSE needs to be traded, and we need the 1-2 punch of LEHTONEN/PAVELEC…

It sickens me that you can write whatever you want (regardless of the sensability of the statement) about a player. This isn’t the first post I’ve seen trashing Perrin or whining that the team should’ve kept Dupuis and sent Perrin to Pittsburg(God, I wish - but for the fact that Perrin would get a shot on a legitimate team - OH BY THE WAY TO THOSE ON THE THRASHERS MESSAGES BOARD WANTING TO DUMP PERRIN FOR DUPUIS AFTER “PERRINS” SLOW START - FYI DUPUIS HAS 2 PTS (GOALS) & HAS BEEN PLAYING AN AVG OF 18.06 MIN PER GAME (STATS COMPARED OVER THE LAST 5 GAMES); 1 G SCORED WAS ASSISTED BY CROSBY & MALKIN/THE OTHER 4-ON-4 IN OVERTIME; IN CONTRAST, PERRIN HAS BEEN PLACED ON THE 4TH LINE OF THE WORST TEAM IN THE LEAGUE/GIVEN AN AVG OF 14.12 MIN OF ICE TIME OVER THE LAST 5 GAMES - BUT OF THAT TIME, AN AVG OF 4.09 MIN PER GAME HAS BEEN ON THE PK.
I’m sure that Perrin wakes up in cold sweats dreaming of the fact that he could’ve been in Dupuis place. If Dupuis only has 2pts with Pit, what do you think he would do here given no offensive opportunities? Get off of Perrin - or better yet, do the kid a favor. Push to get him out of here as “dead weight”. Since this team is at the bottom, he has no place to go but up. Plus, maybe someone will realize what he can contribute to a team and you all will see (not the first time you’ve been wrong about a player) what he can do.

sick reflexes!!! Dude plays on the goal-line and really should’ve had a shutout-anyway he looked good. Hopefully it tired him out and #17 does get that hat-trick.
Anyway, look forward to seeing the game.
GO BLUE !!!

…and there goes Perrin’s mother (Mcarty)…Geez, I didn’t have a sheep in the fight, but I dare say she’s a bit rough around the edges, wouldn’t you say?
Yikes.

Brendan- I would think if he was that gullible, Waddell would’ve convinced him to spend closer to the cap on a regular basis by now.

Jameson, that’s good news then, as I’m more inclined to believe that “cheap and indifferent” is more easily changed, and corrected, than curing a person’s propensity to be hoodwinked, flimflammed, and bamboozled. At this point, the fans have been swindled.
And if it’s a case of the owners being gullible, then they’ve been utterly hornswaggled. I can’t understand their position. Is it, “Show me results, Don, and thennn we’ll spend?” Well, which is it? They either think Waddell is a distant incarnation of Scotty Bowman, or they don’t think much of him, but are ASKING HIM to show improvement on a shoestring budget?
Which, again, isn’t a prudent way to go about things … unless they’ve committed to the build year philosophy. And that’s what I think is happening. Which makes Bruce Levenson’s interview that MUCH MORE disingenuous and offensive. Yes, offensive. He thinks the fans are stupid or gullible, or WORSE.
In particular, I highlight this portion, “It’s way too early. I think we’re 3 games out of first place.” Stop. If it’s a build year, and Bruce’s intentions are to build through the draft, how much more insincere can his comments be? What he’s saying is, “Why fire the GM when we’re right in the THICK of things.” He’s either gullibe, or he’s disingenuous. Which one is better?
Look, all he has to do … is to say that the team took a series of missteps and they want to rebuild correctly this time. At least we can RESPECT that. That’s honest. That’s truthful. That’s SINCERE. What Bruce is doing now … is truly distasteful. It’s like getting caught with your mistress, in bed, and then saying, “It’s not what you think. We’re just shooting a scene for Young and the Restless. It’s just that the cameramen are invisible.”

Wow, what a comeback tonight. Down 3-1, the T-birds rallied, behind Pavelec, for a 4-3 win. A treat for the hometown fans.
But somewhere out there … Charles Wang is smiling, while dialing up Tavares’ agent.
Thanks Tony C.

Dude, I’m sorry, but I never want to hear another comment suggesting that we should try for Tavares. Especially since we now have a crew that actually knows how to develop talent.
As to tonight’s game…the first and third period looked good, shooting accuracy was good, the 2nd line was on FIRE, the 4th line did its job, and the 3rd was about 75% on it. Kovalchuk was looking lively. SA were awesome. Valabik and Oystrick looked like NHL players, and Pavs wasn’t far off.
Not so good…Thorburn seemed to have a flashback to his thug days in that final penalty, and didn’t look right in general — he ended up even, anyway. Valabik got called strictly on size, though. Lots of bad bounces, which luckily in this case didn’t come back to haunt us. SOG were too low.
Other, frivolous stuff…I’m sorry I said Natalie Taylor was competent — she didn’t act like it tonight (Fort Bining? WTF?). Enstrom needs media coaching. But, um, ladies (and Melvin)…Fire on Ice has GOOD material this year, particularly if the grunts stay up. The men looked HOT in their visit to Fort Benning. Unfortunately, Bryan Little looks less hot without the ‘fro, but everybody’s better lit and better positioned. And, um, did you see the guns on Little? The buffness of Exelby and Perrin?
