Election Day Special
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Tuesday November 4, 2008 election day. After two years of the candidates telling us what they think, it’s finally time for us to tell them what we think. Don’t let that chance pass by without exercising your official voice. Otherwise don’t come whining and complaining to me later.
So, in honor of this day and the fact that we have a few days in between games I thought I would put together a ballot of candidates, items and initiatives relating to the Thrashers for you to vote on.
Now, polls will remain open until my next posting this isn’t Chicago, so only vote once and please be sure to push all the way through the ballot so there are no hanging chads.

1 - B 2 - A 3 - D 4 - C 5 - C 6 - write-in. Owner’s will finally admit they don’t care about hockey, sell team, and new owner(s) will bring enthusiasm and new GM. 7 - write-in. Despite wish above on #6, incompetent owners seem to not care that attendance is lagging due to terrible on-ice product and will not get rid of incompetent GM. 8 - C, which could eventually be a direct result of A. 9 - A
Recall the new third jerseys and bring back the original flying “T” jersey.

Yes he did, but Yzerman brings a tad more hockey experience to the table, not to mention his dealings with being on a losing team and witnessing first hand that team being turned into a consistent Stanley Cup contender. Yzerman can vouch that a devoted owner/ownership group plus competent decisions made by a GM with a vision for future dominance can turn a cellar dwelling team into a Stanley Cup shoe-in.
For me, it’s worth the try. Yzerman’s name alone would bring instant credibility to Atlanta, even if he’s useless as a GM for the first few years. I don’t think he can do any worse than Waddell has, no matter your measure for success.

Best Way To Improve Lagging Attendance C. Just win, baby! (And by the way, I think the Thrash should stop selling the upper bowl on low-attendance games. I’ll explain my rationale below.)
Best Thing About Low Attendance A. Chuckling while passing by scalpers outside of Philips Arena
Most Troubling Thing About Low Attendance, A. Trying to keep Johan Hedberg from committing suicide.
For those of you choosing to “vote with your wallets” by not attending games, what would most cause you to start attending again? (Write-in) a full lower bowl.

Pursuant to Fan Blog Rule # TH15-J3RS3Y-D351GN-5UCK5, should the team recall the third jersey which is proposed to be officially unveiled during the November 14th game versus the Carolina Hurricanes?
Yes, but they should be replaced with a better-designed jersey in the same color — that bloody red is the only color that looks good on Slava Kozlov.
Pursuant to Fan Blog Rule # F1R3-WADD311, if the Atlanta Thrasher are forced to trade away Ilya Kovalchuk on or before the trade deadline during the 2009-2010 NHL season because he has not been convinced that the team is “moving in the right direction”, (ref. Marian Hossa, February 2008)… should the general manager of the Atlanta Thrashers, Don Waddell, be then be recalled and forced out of office?
Yes. Yes. Yes.
*Why not sell upper bowl seats? Because it looks lame to have the lower bowl empty, and we have a much larger arena than many of our competitors.

I’m in favor of open seating. By a ticket and sit anywhere you wish in the arena, including Don Waddell’s vacant GM booth.
but remember before we crown Yzerman, Detroit GM Ken Holland gave the same stamp of approval to Don Waddell 10 years ago
Perhaps Holland just wanted Waddell out of town, ranallo?
Remember, he was only in Detroit for one season!
Can’t agree with Enstrom ranking. I think he’s always one of the best on the ice despite any numbers to the contrary.

The only thing I truly care about is the most important, as everything else will fall into place as a result:
FIRE DON WADDELL.
On a side note, I know it’s likely not pc to say it, but I was a big Heatley fan—and wish he were back on the team and that #$%^storm which raged through Blueland never occurred.
There was a moment—albeit however brief—that we were actually a bit envied by other teams, I believe. We had two of the biggest rising stars in the game—as they competed with each other for the rookie-of-the-year trophy (which, of course, Heatley eventually won—but not by much). They were both legit the minute they stepped on the ice, completely outclassing their teammates even as mere rookies. Their talent appeared limitless and the sun seemed to definitely be rising in that figurative joke otherwise known as Blueland. The masses had not given up on Patrik Stefan, either—and I thought he would be a fine ‘passer’ to Ilya (as Ilya would be more than happy to take Patty’s shots).
However, it didn’t take too long to see that there were absolutely NO reinforcements arriving from our minor leagues. This alleged “pipeline” of talent (i.e. Legends of Blueland) proved to be nothing but a pipe-dream. It was also proven that a team cannot be built from the top-five picks alone.
It was also proven that Don Waddell is a complete and utter buffoon. That bumbling, blustering idiot has stolen from this organization and this city for far too long.
FIRE DON WADDELL.

Rawhide, sorry I’m late. But the cyber polling station was PACKED! Anywho, here goes. Most Outstanding Thrasher thus far: Bryan Little. Most Disappointing: Matthieu Schneider. Most impressive team stat: 2-0-2 within the division. Most distressing team stat: 3.83 GA/G.
Best way to improve lagging attendance: Write-In: In the “Thrashers Nest” area of the upper pavillion, place Bruce Levenson’s head and two arms in a stockcade and sell $5 tickets to any passers-by who want to kick him in the pants. I’d be there, “C’mon everybody, it makes you feel better!” booting Bruce with my OVERSIZED AUSTRALIAN punishment boot, and listening to him wail out in pain. “Wow, it really works! I totally feel better!,” says R.Stroz, after administering a series of kicks, and donating a $20 bill. All the money goes to charity. Or, if people oppose charity, for some reason, the money raised will go towards commissioning someone, ANYONE, who knows how to design a decent Thrashers 3rd jersey. I still say, bring back the “Ultimate Warrior” (TM, WWE) stylized “T” logo. Where was I?
Best thing about low attendance: $10 seat and being ushered to the lower bowl, to make the arena seem fuller. Section 116 cringes. I’d lean over, “Popcorn, anyone? I paid $10 for this seat. What did you guys pay?”
The most troubling thing about low attendance: Wondering if the league considers it a valid game, to count in the standings?
Re: “Voting with your wallets,” the thing that will most likely bring me back is the announcement that the NHL has stepped in to run the team. That, or that the lawsuit has been settled—and with that behind them, ideally some money is freed up to go find a quality GM, or to allow the team to be sold to owners who care about hockey. I’d also accept PJ servicing my row.
The Thrasher I’d most like to have back is Braydon Coburn. Defense has always been our achilles heel, and he is a homegrown draft pick. That’s the worst kind of player to lose, in my opinion. Free agents come and go, with little attachment to the city or organization. But players drafted here WANT to prove themselves at the NHL level, and to make the GM that drafted them look good in the process. I think there’s a sense of “ownership/responsibility” in that situation that doesn’t exist with the outsider “free agent.”
I vote “yes” on the recall of the 3rd jersey. And finally, “why wait?” In California, they recalled and outed Gray Davis as Governor in favor of AHH-nold. My vote goes to “TOTAL RECALL.” There is no such thing as a WRONG TIME to fire Don Waddell. It’s a results-oriented league and this GM has had his opportunity. Period, the end.
