Weekend Road Trip
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Thrashers will get a good test this weekend when they pay visits to Motown and Bah-stahn. So far on the season the defending champs are 4-1-1 while the Bruins are 2-2-3 following last night’s 4-2 fall-from-ahead loss to Toronto.
I suspect that sometime this weekend we’ll have a Moose sighting in the Atlanta goal. My preference would be to allow Kari to start in Detroit and Hedberg have a go at it Saturday night.
As for our opposition
In their first six games of the season, Detroit’s offense has generated an impressive 38.0 shot per game. They’ve allowed their opposition to take an average of 27.3 shots. Their goals against average is identical to Atlanta’s 2.83 but they’ve been able to score goals to the tune of 3.33 per game.
Early on, Chris Osgood’s numbers aren’t what you’d expect 2-1-1 with a 3.25 GAA and .884 SV%. However, Ty Conklin is 2-0-0 and sports a very good .937 SV% and 2.00 GAA.
Detroit’s 32.0% efficiency on the power play is second only to St. Louis and they’ve been able to kill off 81.8% of the man advantages that they’ve faced. Atlanta has won 52.4% seventh best in the league.
In the face off circle the Wings have been successful 55.6% of the time.
Meanwhile Boston has been scoring and giving up goals at a 2.86 clip. Almost as even is the S/G and SA/G stat .30.6 shots for and 30.7 shots against per game. Their power play is 17.9% effective while their defense has only managed to kill of penalties 74.2% of the time, (only Nashville and Colorado are worse).
In goal Manny Thomas is 1-1-2 with a 2.65 GAA and .919 SV%. Manny Fernandez is 1-1-1 with a 2.61 GAA and .899 SV%.
The Bruins have won 51.3% of the face offs taken.
Speaking Of Road Trips
Enjoy the games on Sports South tonight and tomorrow evening. As for me well, I’ll be on a weekend roady of my own wheeling my way down in East-Bumblekrappe, Florida with the fam to celebrate the birth anniversary of the divine Mrs. R’s mother.
Yes, the lake house where there’s no Center Ice no cable no internet! Not a single lux-ur-EEEeee it’s primitive as can be.
Joy rapture.
So I’ll be catching the games on XM as I make my way down I-75 to the sticks tonight thank God for XM and sneakin’ out to the truck to catch the Bruins game on Saturday night.
That is unless the wife and mom-in-law have without my prior notification and consent conspired to plan a dinner out at the local eatery or an unscheduled visitation with friends and neighbors. All in a blatant attempt to deprive me of the ability to even simply listen to the game!
Joy rapture.
But I Leave You With Weekend Reading Assignments
Atlanta’s new-look blueline has gotten the attention of NHL.com’s Mike G. Morreale.
Among a few other things SI.com’s Jim Kelley considers how the current economic situation might play into calculating the worth of signing such players as Marian Gaborik and Ilya Kovalchuk.
Terry Frei of ESPN.com takes a look at how the top five draft picks in each year since 2000 are fairing.
Craig Custance notes that a year after signing a large contract with the Buffalo Sabres, Thomas Vanek is starting to pay big dividends.
In case you missed this Wednesday night the Ottawa Senators trailed the Florida Panthers 3-1 going into the third. Ottawa then fired 26 again, that’s twenty-six shots on goal during the final period. Panther goalie Craig Anderson turned them all way.
On the opposite end of the goalie spectrum Sens net minder Martin Gerber may be running thin the patience of Craig Hartsburg. TSN is reporting that the Ottawa coach will turn to Alex Auld Friday night against the Anaheim Ducks.

Rawhide, think of it this way. When you get the Pearly Gates, St. Peter’s going to ask, whatcha been doing? What was up with losing your temper and holding anger against a certain DeToilet Red Wings fan who loves in his mom’s basement and visited your blog?
And you can answer, yes, yes, I did do that, but in 2008 I went to East BumbleStendec, FL for my mother in law’s birthday. And he’ll answer:

Seriously, though. I’m with Bob — I feel a win tonight for Atlanta. I think the team is going to go into Detroit and give 200%.
As for Baaaaaston… I don’t know. We’re playing really good teams on the back-to-back, and I think we’re going to come out of this 1-1. Maybe we’ll force OT in Boston, but I think we win in regulation in Detroit.

Sorry Alan I just couldn’t help myself.
I’m undecided on the game tonight. I think we can win, but frankly the Wings may not make the mistake they did last year of not taking this team seriously. The team should be up to proving something - to themselves, to the coach, to the Wings, and to #81. If nothing else, it will be another good test to see how this team compares to a solid team.

Nope, Kovy is a class act, he wouldn’t punk out like that. Plus, he respect Hoss. I would like to see him win on the scoreboard, however, and think he’ll be flying tonight.

Sara — I think the Red Wings can deal with losing to Atlanta again if that means they’re going to win The Cup.
And I agree with Bob, I think you’ll see plenty of cordial activities between Hossa and his old teammates, and likely see Kovalchuk and him talking it up before the game starts.
If nothing happened to Holik (I wouldn’t know, but I didn’t hear anything bad) then I would guess nothing will happen to Hossa.
By the way, I feel bad for Bogosian. Tonight might have been his only chance to lace up with his idol, Chris Chelios…had it not been for Chelios breaking a hip (or more like a leg, whatever). Does Atlanta play Detroit twice this season, or just the one time?

Score is 2-1 after one period. Zetterberg with a powerplay goal, Slater (!) came back with a goal, then Hossa took it to the net in a beautiful fakeout that even threw Lehtonen off and basically gave Hossa an open net. Shots so far are 12-11 in favor of Detroit.

Look, I’m going to be honest. Brutally. It looks like the Red Wings are holding a practice. And we’re their scrimmage partners. I don’t mean that maliciously. That’s just how I see it. I am extremely proud of the fact the Thrashers kept this as a one goal (2-1) game through about the halfway mark.
Obviously, this is a game, not a scrimmage, and our guys are trying their very best. But until the T-birds start winning puck battles along the boards and maintaining some consistent pressure, it’s just going to be wave-after-wave of Red Wing attack for the rest of the way. I almost feel like Hossa is ‘toying’ with us. He had the ‘hat trick’ on his stick and elected to pass it up. There’s a certain air of, ‘like I’m not gonna get 3-4 more chances in the 3rd period’ feel about what’s happening, vis-a-vis Hossa.
Look, so what if we lose? We’re SUPPOSED to lose. We’re matched up with, arguably, the best team on the planet right now. If the Thrashers could just come out and ‘win’ the 3rd period, I feel like the team could build momentum off of that. If, on the other hand, the Red Wings pile it on, in some 8-2 win, it’s going to leave a stain that won’t wash off easily.
I’m not asking for a win. I’m asking for this team to show some testicular fortitude in this 3rd period, and win the period. Even if the worst should happen here in the 3rd, I’m not going to throw the team under the bus, and call it a ‘season.’ For the 1,000th time, it’s a build year. The goal is to develop talent. To learn a new system. To develop chemistry. To establish a team identity. And so forth.
If our Thrashers come out like gangbusters, show some pride, and make this a 4-3 finish, it’d go a lonnnng way towards that development and identity.

Hainsey Scores!!! 5-on-3. PPG. And we’re still on the PP. There was only 0:01 left on the 1st penalty. And now, we have ANOTHER 5-on-3. Stuart flipped the puck up out of play. Let’s see what happens!
By Brendan
October 24, 2008 9:41 PM | Link to this
Earlier, in a 2nd period PP, Colby Armstrong had a nice deflection try that was almost a goal. On this most recent 5-on-3 PP, Kovalchuk hit the goalpost. It could be 4-3, right now, if either of two chances had cashed in.
The Red Wings on the PP. Actually, they just took a penalty. It’s 4-on-4. Lots of penalties here in the 3rd period. Let’s see what comes of this. Our 5-on-5 against Detroit hasn’t been anything to write home about.

It’s a good thing you people don’t know anything about hockey! If you did you certainly would’nt pay to go watch that team play. Do you actually buy tickets down there or are the people at the home games like movie extras? I guess they don’t have ice rinks down there. If they did your team could have a chance to practice a power play. Do you people know what a power pay is? Thanks for Hossa, he has out scored your whole team.

Seeee. This is what I’m talking about. We’re winning the period. It’s 4-3. And there’s enough time, with 3:00 left, roughly, to pull out a point, with another goal. Congrats to BRETT STERLING for his 1st on the season.

Come on, people. Did you really expect the Thrash to go zero to hero in such a short period of time?
All things considered, it was ok. Well, bad, but not dismal.
The Good: 1. Hitting. The 4th line, in particular, looked pretty tight and played the body like pros. 2. Havs, Enstrom, and Armstrong…all with significant time and a positive +/-. 3. Slater and Sterling. Woo!
The Bad: 1. Shots on goal. 2. The Thrash players played more minutes, on average, and looked pretty rough in the 2nd and 3rd. As conditioning started to fray, shots got sloppy. 3. It doesn’t show up in the goals, but Lehts needs to control rebounds better.

How is it that the smallest guy in the NHL is our best guy at crashing the net? Perhaps some of our bigger bodies can learn something from him. In my mind Sterling has earned the right to play tomorrow night. If he gets another “in the crease goal” give him 5 more games. I also have to note that the sustained O-zone pressure on Sterling’s goal was what coach’s dream of. They call them ugly goals,…raise your hand if you think Thrasher goal # 3 tonight was “pretty.” It was more than that it was beauuuutiful.
Speaking of coach’s dreams,….Hossa is sooooo good. I wish DW would have dealt the Thrashers a hand to keep him in Blue. If there is a better backchecker in the league I haven’t seen him. I admire him,..as I do the Wings (Note “like” and “admire” are not the same.)
New topic,…sometime back Alan lamented the passing of Reggie Dunlop. Recently I watched “Cool Hand Luke.” I’d forgotten Luke’s prison # was 37. This Thrasher fan now sees two # 37s in that shining cloud of witnesses.
Not long ago Knobler had us going on line names,…etc. After watching “Cool Hand Luke” I thought of several parallels with the coach Anderson’s Thrashers. In addition to #37, this team has no quit. “Cool Hand” earned his nickname by overachiving, despite being dealt a marginal hand. Gotta love both “Cool hand” and the Thrashers. Can one of you bloggers can come up with a good line linking these two? (Please ignore the ending for Luke.) BTW: Did anyone notice Perrin’s “Failure to communicate” with Stuart tonight.
Nothing to be ashamed of tonight. This is despite Kari not having one of his better nights. Think we’ll see a moose tomorrow?

A few observations:
The UNGOOD:
Schneider has been making too many mistakes in the defensive end of the ice so far this year. The first Hossa goal should be pinned on Schneider for letting Hossa skate by as if Scheider was the tin man from the Wizard of Oz. Also, Charmin could have put forth a little more effort trying to block Hossa’s shot.
Christensen looks like the stiffest white man I have seen since Jon Koncak played for the Atlanta Hawks. Someone give this guy a hula hoop and teach him how to move.
The GOOD:
Sterling plays with a pair, so let him play.
Little and Kovy are clicking.
NEEDS ADJUSTMENT:
Although Charmin is getting some nice assists, Kovy and Little need a center that plays with more passion. Charmin has skills, but plays like a figure skater. Our number one line needs a tougher center.

In all fairness, I did make the third goal possible with a nice pass back in front of the goal to Sterling. I also held the puck in the zone prior to that goal by warding off a defender.

How is it people go nuts when a team that finished 28th in the league last year loses 5-3 to the defending cup champs and one of those 5 was an empty netter? This isn’t some death knell. Holy cow talk about unrealistic expectations.
Good - the first period. Also good - the third period. Ungood - the second period again. What in hades is wrong with this team’s (lack of) ability to actually compete in the middle period?
Some other observations…that is what a team (Detroit) looks like that pressures down low and puts traffic in front of the goalie on a regular basis. Fancy that. Proof is in the pudding moment - two of our goals tonight came as garbage banging in front of the net. It’s a major element the team has consistently lacked over the years and I’m still adamant about wanting to see that on a regular basis.
The guys generated a number of really good chances tonight. They weren’t as totally out-classed in this game as some infer.
The number one good thing to take from this game - they didn’t quit after going down 4-1 nor did they lose their composure after the two quick goals in the second. That tells us a lot about the message from Coach and the tone in the lockerroom.
The Thrash could have won this game. At this stage of where the team is overall, that’s more of a positive than the loss is a negative.

No, that was the year before.
He did state that we were ahead of the worst-to-playoff finish of the Flyers—so, thus, he must expect to make the playoffs this year.

I’m agreeing with Sara. We just played one of the top 3 or 4 teams in the league in their house, and came within a minute of tying the game. This is a team that knows how to play defense, and as the immortal Yogi Berra said, “Good defense beats good offense, and vice versa”. Seriously, Detroit is a highly skilled team that is deep at every position. They simply outmatch us and I’m not shocked by the result. I thought we hung in there and came back from a 3 goal deficit to almost tie the game. The Thrash exceeded my expectations.
I’m disappointed with our “savior” Schneider. 2 points and a -6 +/- is really ungood for someone making well over 5 million. I see him do some good things and then … . I just shake my head and wonder what he was thinking.
I thought Perrin had a good game, especially the 1st period. For a little guy, he was playing physical and was literally all over the ice.
I think we’ll do better against Boston.

I pretty much always think Perrin played a good game simply because he always shows up ready to play and doesn’t get discouraged. But lately he’s been playing a nice, chunky game — his hits are impressive for a little guy, he hustles, and he has a very good understanding of the mechanics of the game such that he is an effective playmaker and two-way player in a variety of positions. I wish he played more minutes, but I assume that’ll happen later, once everyone’s up to speed.
Which, um, Schneider. Yeah. NOT up to speed. Good thing we signed Madea — seriously, Hainsey, we have hair stylists in Atlanta. Hainsey appears to be playing half the game, and carrying his minutes. The swedes look better as a unit than they did a few weeks ago, and I’m liking Havelid’s new offensive style.

Nikita, I think you’re unfair toward Schneider. He’s paired up with a teenager, who - although a talent - is clueless most of the time so far. I mean, come on, he was coasting looking for shadows most of the game in Detroit. In fact, Detroit got that very edge by matching up him with Hossa. Learning on the job is fine and dandy, but it sure sucks when your partners have to share the consequences.

Scrappy effort by the T-birds in the 3rd period last nite after a terrible 2nd period once again. That has got to be corrected…and fast! Just a few observations from my 2nd viewing of the 3rd period:
1) Much better movement on the PP when we were on the 5 on 3 for an extended stretch. Love how Hainsey moves and makes quick decisions. Still need more traffic in front of net.
2) Speaking of traffic in front, during DET’s only PP of the 3rd, Holmstrom was parked in front of Kari for 25 solid seconds of his 1:05 shift…who can be our Holmstrom? Army? EC? White? No on White…he needs to move around since he’s too good of a passer.
3) Bogosian seems to be getting more and more comfortable and by the 3rd was in complete control. He actually seems to be better positionally than Schneider at times. He even had a brilliant pass to White for a near goal.
4) Schneider had a great scoring oppty at about 7 min mark when he failed to one-time the diagonal pass from Kozlov or Williams (can’t remember exactly). Rather than blast it in stride, he skated it and gave Ozzie a chance to power over and get square…UNGOOD!!!
5) Sterling was brilliant! I can’t believe I’m saying it, but give this kid some serious mins with Army and EC. The down-low cycling on the 3rd goal was the best sustained stretch of 5 on 5 pressure I have seen in 2 + years! I counted 37 secs of pressure from the time Sterling kept the puck in at the blueline. Sterling was relentless and EC made a gorgeous pass. If EC can battle like that consistently in the corners, we’ll be alright. I think we need someone like that on the Kovy line to compliment he and BLits…sorry Todd!!
How about these lines?
Kovy — Little — Thorburn
Sterling — EC — Army
Kozlov — Perrin — Williams
Boulton — Slater — Hoffman / Stuart
I am assuming Reasoner is out for awhile with the knee

Sorry, I forgot White!! Didn’t mean to do that. Just would like to see a “banger” type to do some dirty work in the corners. As good as the 1st line is at times, it’s often “one and done” on the attack. Let’s try this again:
Kovy — Perrin — Little
Sterling — EC — Army
Kozlov — White — Williams
Boults / Stuart — Slater — Thorby
Perrin is not afraid to mix it up in the corners and he’s a good passer. He may not have the size of an EC, but I’ve seen him win a lot of puck battles he shouldn’t or hold the puck against pressure til he can find the open man. He showed he can put some points on the board last year so give him a chance with two other talented passers / scorers.

2 PP goals…are we sure this is the Thrashers playing tonight?

2-0 ATL at the end of one. Two power play goals, one from Williams and one from Schneider. I hope Atlanta keeps the relentless pressure on through the next two periods of play, and doesn’t slack off during the middle stanza.
Hedberg looks good out there tonight.

Hey PJ good first period so far (2-0 good guys). I was really impressed by several moves Bogosian put on the Bruins defense. The kid looked like a decent imitation of the Boston #4. Moose has been sharp in goal. Usually the Thrashers are flat in the 1st period in the 2nd game of back-to-backs, but they had good jump out there. Jason Williams scored the 1st and Schneider scored the 2nd, both on the PP. We definitely had the better play.

Looks like we’ve fallen asleep in this second period again. We really need to fix that.

PK gives up one after an Enstrom holding penalty. 3-3 tie.

Well PJ not a great 2nd period. Remember the good stuff I said about Zack? Well, the kid blew an assignment and it cost us a goal. The period started off with Perrin missing a really good scoring chance from the right side of the net (how did he miss that?) and went downhill from there.
At least we are going to start the 3rd period on the PP. Chara took a penalty (and should have gotten a 2nd for the hit on Little after the whistle).
All in all, it could be worse.

NO more Questions. We are Completely LOSERS. Kovy will ask for trade very soon. He is not playing yet. Slava was waiting to get retired after a season. #18, I do not want to spell his name, is not a Veteran, heis a JOKE. He lost all his skill in Detroit and Ducks. Haincy was looked good. Moose was completely lost on the game. He was not ready to win a game. Whole team were playing only 1-first period.

I’m a little more optimistic than my Russian friend. We lost, but again, it was close. I’m really not sure what Enstrom was trying to accomplish there at the last Boston goal. It looked like he was turtling on the ice in front of the net, and possibly interfered with Hedberg. Hainsey did look good. So did Havelid and X.
Bogosian seems OK when the play is already in our end, but has problems on the transition into our end.
Armstrong is a warrior. How he made the pass after having Chara take him into the boards like that is beyond me. I would still be laying on the ice.
And can someone explain to me how the length of the defensive zones wasn’t noticed until game time? Is this like the commercial where the guy writes ‘CHEFS’ in the K.C. end zone? I’ve never seen this happen before.

Up 2-0, it’s shame we didn’t come away with at least a point. But hey, it was still a very competitive game. We also led, 3-2. I was disappointed that the lead couldn’t be sustained going into the 3rd period.
I’m glad Moose finally got a start. Well, it’s probably back to Lehtonen for the nationally televised game vs. Philadelphia on Versus. The Flyers won in overtime, their 2nd win in a row over Jersey.
St. Louis beat Florida, 4-0. San Jose beat Tampa Bay, 3-0. But Washington beat Dallas, 6-5, in overtime, and Carolina defeated the Islanders, 4-3. Toronto beat Ottawa, in a bit of a surprise. I mention that one only insofar as the October 13th edition of Sports Illustrated lists Toronto and the Islanders are teams they project to finish behind the Thrashers. SI views the Thrashers as a 13th place finish in the East, just behind Buffalo and just ahead of the Maple Leafs, with the Islanders last. By the way, Buffalo lost in a shootout to Colorado tonight, but are 6-0-2 on the season.
SI lists the non-playoff teams as (9) Carolina, (10) Tampa Bay, (11) Florida, (12) Buffalo, (13) Atlanta, (14) Toronto, and (15) NYI. SI lists the Sentators and Bruins among the playoff field. The Capitals are listed 5th in terms of projected points, 3rd by seed.
On Page 77, you’ll note that the Atlanta Thrashers logo appears next to the Columbus Blue Jackets, in SI’s assessment of the Central Division of the Western Conference.

“I assume the phrase “tongue-in-cheek” is lost on you.”
It wasn’t spoken tongue-in-cheek, RanalloSheep. Simply more bluster from our bumbling, idiotic GM…

Daultan Leveille has scored for Michigan State vs. Northern Michigan, in a game on the NHL Network. Leveille also has 4 shots on goal for MSU.
Daultan Leveille was selected by the Thrashers, 29th overall, in the 1st round of the 2008 Entry Draft.

Daultan Leveille’s goal stands as the game-winner, in a 2-0 win by Michigan State over Northern Michigan. I enjoyed my sneak peek at our young 1st round draft pick. Atlanta acquired Leveille with the 1st round draft pick Pittsburgh gave us for Hossa and Dupuis.
Michigan State is a fine hockey program, housed in the CCHA, with a long and storied history of producing future NHL players.
