Time To Flip The Switch On At Philips

As Mike Knobler reports…the 179-day gap between home Thrashers games is almost over. The last time we saw our guys play was last April 5 when they slapped the Tampa Bay Lighting around the ice to the tune of 4-1. Colby Armstrong, Bryan Little, Jimmy Slater and Bobby Holik scored for the Thrashers, Kari Lehtonen stopped 30 of 31 shots and the Bolts outshot Atlanta 31-24.

Ah…memories.

Yeah, I know…Wednesday’s game is just a preseason match…but that’s just fine with me. I can’t wait to mosey it on down to Philips, scream for my team and see some old friends that I haven’t seen since last spring.

The Thrashers will be going up against the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings…who just this past Sunday smacked our squad around Joe Louis Arena. However, according to Ben Wright of the Blueland Blog, the Thrashers will field more of the NHL players then the last time the two teams took to the ice.

Scheduled to appear are:

O-fensive Lines
Kovalchuk- Christensen- Williams
Sterling- Little- Armstrong
Stuart- Reasoner- Thorburn
Boulton- Stevenson- Slater

Blueline Pairings
Enstrom- Havelid
Hainsey- Bogosian
Exelby- Kulda

‘Tween The Pipes
Lehtonen
Hedberg

Slava Kozlov is a scratch as to continue his recovery from the procedures undergone this past summer. Also, newly acquired Mathieu Schneider will have to wait before making his Thrashers debut. Perrin and White will also sit this one out.

It’s really good to see that Erik Christensen will be participating and we will get our first chance to see the top line trio play together. Also, I’m looking forward to seeing Arturs “Woulda” Kulda on the blueline. I truly think this guy has an honest chance at making the team.

LET’S DROP THE FREAKIN’ PUCK ALREADY!!!

ahem…

I know, just preseason…but it’s Thrashers hockey in Philips. All is right with the world again.

So…Got Gas?

OK…I’m driving to work the other day and, while sitting at a stoplight, I notice a man standing on the corner wearing a trench coat. “Strange”, I thought to myself, “Its not cold enough for such attire”.

Then he spots me looking at him…he pulls open one side of the coat, exposing a gas can. He looks around nervously and then says to me, “So, you looking for some ‘go-juice’, eh…it’s the good stuff…pure Saudi Arabian 93 octane…it’ll take you on the trip you’re looking for”.

I considered it.

Seriously though…gasoline around here has been about as hard to find as flying pigs. Last week there was even some chatter about canceling the Alabama-Georgia game because of the shortage. Of course, Bulldog Nation probably wishes now that it had been.

I have a friend of mine who was deliberating whether or not he was going to make it down for the game Wednesday night to see the Thrashers take on Detroit because he didn’t know if he was going to be able find the petrol needed to do so.

So…are any of you out there considering altering or canceling plans to go to the games this week…or even next Friday…because of this situation?

Me? Well…I’m hoping I don’t have to go see the guy in the trench coat.

Marta.

I realize that riding the train may be an anathema to many of yall, but c’mon it puts you right at the freakin front door…and it costs less than 2 gallons of gas for a round-trip.

besides it’s always funny when the hockey fans scare the “normal” night-time Marta riders.

I cannot justify spending one red cent on a pre season game. They should be played in non-NHL markets where they can generate some interest in the game - Hamilton, Sacramento, Winnipeg, Orlando, Qubc City, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas and the like.

I’ve been wondering about the downstream impacts of a gas shortage. People will go out to eat less, out to shop less, out to entertainment,…including hockey, less.

I’m am now much more appreciative to have MARTA nearby. I guess this is something government does that I now see a real upside to.

Should there be a blogger out there who lives in the Decatur/Emory area I’m all for carpooling. Let me, or Mr Rawhide know.

So, we are focusing on the Thrashers while the economic world might be collapsing around us. I’m not ignoring that,..I just don’t what eles to do. A panic would be the worst thing,..right?

So how do bloggers feel about spending at the games? I know earlier there was some discussion about going to the games but not spending anything at concessions.

21 hours, but who’s counting, until the puck drops. I am sooooooo ready.

Tony C. - MARTA’s a good choice, but for those of us out here in the twin cities… Kennesaw/Acworth…we pretty much gotta drive in.

I did get gas today…so I’m good for a while. I understant the gas is gonna start slowwwwwly flowing in the area in increasing amounts over the next week and a half or so.

glovesave29 - I agree 134.76% with your thoughts regarding preseason hockey. It should be free or greatly reduced. Also, taking more games to non-NHL towns is a winner.

waffleboy - Hey there dude…how ya been? Good summer for ya?

It wasn’t really meant as a “bomb”…just an observation given the outcome of the game.

HookyBob - As per usual..me and the tax exemptions will be dining at cafe C’Enen Pfeudquart prior to the matches.

Yep, MARTA for me, some games. The tailgates, I drive…the train won’t go to the gulch and let me park the cooler inside for several hours. But I save more than a gallon of gas and the parking fee when I ride the train.

It’s several guys last chance to impress JA for consideration for a spot on the team. Good luck to all.

Moose definitely needs another pre-season game after the his debacle in St. Louis.

Please please PLEASE someone let me know how the Sterling/Little/Armstrong line performs. That’s an ideal line for Sterling, and they should all benefit from the youth and speed on their line.

We now have gas out here in the sticks, but unfortunately that’s why I’ll be missing the game at Phillips — my Atlanta friends can now afford to come out here and stay at my house this evening.

As for MARTA — I love MARTA. I just wish it came out further and in a way that didn’t involve driving practically into downtown or navigating the world’s most congested suburb to get it.

And I like the line combos. I just wish that Slater was not on the 4th.

Anybody know if the game will be on anywhere? Like XM?

I know it’s just pre-season, but I’m about as excited as if it were the opening game. It’s time to SUIT UP!! And put the failure of last season behind us.

Also. I take MARTA every time. It’s not that scary, guys. Really.

I’m debating what to do re: MARTA. I don’t really want to waste the extra gas at this point to drive all the way into town, plus cough up $8 to park, PLUS have to sit in rush-hour traffic. But, I also don’t want to have to take MARTA back late at night since I’ll likely be at the end of the line and I’m just not sure how many other people will be riding. If it was regular season I wouldn’t worry so much. Also I’m not sure how long it would take to get back to my car and it’ll be late enough already and I’ll still have quite a drive home.

Hmmmm what to do what to do.

Either way though - HOCKEY HOCKEY HOCKEY HOCKEY HOCKEY HOCKEY!!!!!!!!!

While the fans in Canada may resent us and the media up North probably would rather ignore us, there is at least one guy on the national media stage who cares enough to write about the Thrashers! It’s our old friend Craig Custance who took the time to respond to my e-mail inquiry about the Flyers cap situation and how it might impact the future of Mike Knuble (hopefully as a Thrasher!). Here’s what he wrote:

*Jason — You know – that’s a really valid point by you. Knuble seems to be the one player I keep hearing as the solution, but Anaheim’s cap troubles have gotten much more publicity than Philly’s. Maybe it’s time to give Paul Holmgren a call, I’ll snoop around on this one.

Good to hear from you, I’m writing a Kovalchuk feature as we speak. I’m starting to feel bad for him.*

So look out for his Kovy piece on TSN’s website and be sure to send your written regards to CC for trying to keep the Thrashers on the national radar screen!!

The Thrashers always carry 7 D-Men - Have since 1999. Per Waddell, BOTH EXELBY and VALABIK will make the team, so this really is a moot point, but I was just looking for your opinion here…

New TSN Craig Custance article about Kovy!

[Kovalchuk] insists a trade request has never creeped into his head.

“No, not really. I like everything here,” Kovalchuk said. “It’s a great city, my family loves it here. I feel very comfortable in the locker room and with management, trainers, everybody. I don’t have any problems. If we’re going to play well, I want to stay here. I want to win the Cup and bring it here because I was drafted by this team.”

Hmmmm “If we’re going to play well, I want to stay here.” That’s a pretty big if.

Nice article by CC.

It’s not that big an “if”… I think he (#17) just wants to play with guys that “want it”. How many times have we seen him zip a nifty pass to one of his linemates only to see the puck bounce off their skate/slide right past them/bounce off their stick because the other guy was surprised he was passed to???

Part of it may just be the amount of mustard #17 puts on his passes-part of it may be that #17’s reputation as a “prima donna”-part of it may be lack of skill (some cases it definitely has been). Personally, I think it’s that #17 is always thinking about scoring-he is surprised the other guy isn’t.

Think about when he has developed some sort of familiarity with a linemate. Howabout when he and Metro were skating together before Metro go hurt? Once #17 trusted Metro, that line became more productive-I can recall one play in particular where #17 came off the left halfwall drove the net, and at the last second slid the puck to Metro for a wide-open wrister-I think #17 was happier than Metro was!

So I look for good things from #17’s line-he’s got a proven NHL scorer on the other wing, and a potential scorer in Crusher-sounds like he may be skaitng on his first line with other legitimate scoring threats since he rolled with Savvy & Cap’n Rat.

That quote definitely doesn’t sound like a player with one foot out the door to me.

Sure, he left an “out” with the “if we’re going to play well”, but can you blame him? He’s not on the team to be in a perpetual rebuild, so he’s telling the truth with that statement.

Anyways, I love the attitude he brings to this team, and I truly hope that whomever is the GM come 2010 will have the pieces in place to convince Kovalchuk the team is going to play well enough for him to stay in Atlanta.

Why does this Jim Slater guy always get a “Free Pass”

He’s only 24. He had a couple of good scoring opportunities, despite the loss (on the flipside, I know he always mucked up scoring chances last year, but these looked pretty good in the face of very solid goaltending by Osgood). And he kicked Lilja’s a* tonight.

Any more dumb questions?

By Wings fan in Ga.

October 2, 2008 12:46 AM | Link to this

That was a pretty goal by Christensen. That was a bad penalty to take (or a good one if you are a Detroit fan) by Colin Stuart that led to Detroit’s first goal. …I really wouldn’t say Slater kicked Lilja’s a** tonight. Lilja, even though he has size, isn’t really a fighter. He took one swing and down he went. Whoopidee doo. …R. Stroz, don’t form your opinion on Jason Williams after just a preseason game. Give it time. He will be OK. The Thrashers will be fine this season.

Jim Slater is a 4th line center. Should anyone be expecting miracles? I know. I know. He’s a former 1st round draft pick, 30th overall. That’s still considered to be fertile ground for finding a prospect.

Slater has some good wheels. He came on a bit down the stretch last year, after laying an egg from October to New Year’s Day. He probably won’t play a lot of minutes. Which means he probably won’t get the opportunity to develop as well as he’d probably like. Slater is in his contract year. I see him as “sweetener” in some future trade. I’ve forgotten his salary, but I’ll guess it’s in the viscinity of $750K to $850K. That’s hardly going to break any team’s bank, especially pro-rated, if it comes to that.

By Alan

October 2, 2008 1:24 AM | Link to this

Lilja, even though he has size, isn’t really a fighter. He took one swing and down he went.

According to Hockeyfights.com, Slater was in two during 06-07 and one last year, making this just his fourth fight ever. So Slater isn’t exactly a fighter, either. Not to mention that he lacks size and is pretty physically mediocre, one would think a man of Lilja’s stature should have been able to easily handle a guy like Slater. Instead, like you said, Lilja threw one punch (which didn’t even connect), and was down.

With all of that in mind… I would call it an a*-kicking.

(As a Wings fan, I’ve never liked Liability Lilja, and have no idea what Babcock and Holland see in him. Take that how you will, though.)

What I saw was Thrashers getting pushed around in the corners, d-men that couldn’t move anyone from the net (which is why Valabik makes the squad) and a lack of timing.

The timing thing isn’t that important; that comes with playing. I thought we had decent attack time in the ‘wings zone on the PP. Christensen had a good (not great) game. He whiffed on a few passes.

Are they better than last year? I’m thinking that they are. But they still have the same problems.

First of all, lemme say how cool it was to meet more of you folks last night at the game (Stroz, I’m still scrubbing snot off my Wings shirt).

I can’t remember the last time I left Philips after a loss and felt that good. OK, yeah granted, Wings won, and I got to see live hockey for the first time since April, but I saw a lot of good things last night. The Thrashers actually did a pretty good job of hanging with a tough opponent. The Wings didn’t get a legit even-strength goal all night (Kari’s gift-wrapped puck to Zetts doesn’t count). The D looked solid - they made some great outlet passes and moved the puck up the ice well. They were pretty positionally sound - I even caught X with his head on a swivel making sure guys were covered. There was more movement on the PP than last season and far less whack-a-mole going on.

It’s still early in the preseason and overall for a team with a new coach, new system, and lots of new players. It’s going to take some time for it all to come together and for some of the young players to develop. But the early indications based on last night are very good IMO.

BTW, I just got my SportingNews Online Newsletter and there’s an interesting tidbit in it: apparently Marc Savard is on the trading block in Boston. Ok, ok, way outside the realm of possibility most likely since he’d have to waive his NTC and I’m not sure he’d waive to come back here. But oh, if ever there was an impossible dream to moon over, that would be it!

Reasoning behind the move is a healthy Bergeron, an emerging Krejci, a need to dump some salary, and a desire for another d-man.

XLB for Savy? snicker Ok ok something serious…Hainsey for Savy? Hmm not much of a salary dump though I suppose that way. Valabik? Then Chara can mentor him. Heck, I’d give ‘em any of our d-men short of Bogosian to get Savy back.

Ah nostalgia, how bittersweet it is.

By Smitty

October 2, 2008 9:08 AM | Link to this

I was mainly interested in what how the new guys would play last night. Bogosian is going to be a force. He always seemed to be in control and delivered a couple of good hits. The penalty he took was borderline. He was just finishing his after the DTW player dumped the puck in. Kulda got caught once which led to a breakaway but DTW hit the crossbar. I think he played well enough to give some serious thought of having him stay in ATL. Hainsey carried the puck well as did Bogie. I was a little disappointed with the forwards. DTW controlled play for the 1st half of the game. Passing was off and we still had a little trouble getting out of our own end. PK was very passive. I thought Kari was too deep in the crease on the 3rd DTW PP goal but he did get an assist on Zetterberg’s goal

I’d love to hear, “I’m here for the long haul” not qualifications. They better get this team in gear quick, and I’m afraid that’s no in the cards in this build year

I was totally suprised by the Thrashers last night. Detroit is so ridiculously good that the score could have been 10-0. Kari’s goal was just embarrassing but lets just hope he got it out of his system in the pre-season. We actually kept possession in our own zone which basically happened NEVER last year… we took the puck away from Detroit several times in our own zone… good times. I though Bogo looked really good.. a little bit timid but that is to be expected. I thought that we totally hung with a team that looks like they are already in post-season mode.

Yeah Buzilla it wasn’t that bad. Every team will have nights like that - particularly against other offensive powerhouses. Mostly we just have to stop making the regular habit out of it. Thorburn’s fight was eh. They all seemed eh other than the surprise factor of Slater’s skirmish. Lots of chippiness though - Sameulsson and XLB did a lot of chattering. Thought they might go at one point.

kracker those were valid points about Savy - it is kind of interesting when a highly productive player can’t seem to stick anywhere. I remember that was Don’s big problem with offering Savy money (publicly anyway) - he was a liability and while he was willing to pay him for his offensive production, those liabilities to Don’s thinking (and mine at the time and still) precluded Savy from earning big bucks. Hindsight, $5M a year ain’t bad for a #1 center with some liabilities attached. And it’s possible that under Anderson’s offense-first system, Savy’s liability issues might not be a big deal.

I’d be curious to know the real deal between him and Kovy though. I never got there was an issue, but then again, we don’t always hear a lot of things.

I must admit I was totally bummed at the game last night. You know, if they are going to charge full price to go to an exhibition game (and include it in season ticket holders packages), they should have at least done something to justify the cost. It was like flying at a no-frills airline.

The one thing about the game that stood out to me that was also a dissappointment was that when the Wings had the PP, there was somebody in the crease at all times (though that wasn’t long since they scored in 15 seconds) - and when the Thrash were on the “PP”, I never saw anybody plant themselves in the crease. All 5 skaters were chasing the puck. We haven’t had anybody that did that job since our old captain #19 retired. It just seems like something that can be coached, but Anderson must be a traditionalist and traditionally, the Thrashers must believe that it’s a penalty to stand in the crease on the PP.

I don’t want to be totally negative though, and really liked the hustle that Christansen showed on his goal. That takeaway goal was 100% hustle and a great finishing move.

I saw game against Detroit. What can I say??? Pre-season! Right. What I like and do not like:

First line. They will be fine. Yes Williams is kind of soft person, but it is only one game. If he will continue do that, Army will take his place. Crush was OK, but Little was better. I expect to see Little move up if Crush will not handle First center.

Second Line. Little looked OK and Army can play better. Sterling must go back to Chicago. He was absolutly nobody on ice. Slava will take his place. Second need to scored also.

Third line. Reasoner was fine and they need some one big on this line. Stuart is not good to make a team. I like to see Hoffman on this line.

Fourth line. Slater was just horrible like always. White will take his place. I donot like them at all.

D-men:

Havelid -Toby - Good pair

Bogus was shake it little bit, but he will be fine with Hainsy

Ex will play with Shneider or Valabik. Kulda is not ready to NHL yet.

I was at the game last night and was very UN-impressed…

REASONER is awful… :(

SLATER/STUART/STEVENSON all need to go back to CHI…

KULDA looked OK, but I keep VALABIK and send KULDA back to CHI…

Where was the OFFENSE???

WHY did JIMMY “CAN’T FINISH” SLATER get 2nd star??? Absolutely ridiculous…

I keep STERLING in the Pressbox for now… But he NEEDS to step it up if he’s gonna stay here.

LEHTONEN
PAVELEC

It’s time for HEDBERG to go… That was plainly obvious in the STL game…

So hey, guys… remember Theo Fleury? If any of you ever thought there might be a little something strange about him, “you ain’t seen anything yet,” as the phrase goes:

“I didn’t hang out on the surface. I would go five, six, seven, eight levels below the streets of New York and party with people I didn’t know. Freaks, transvestites, all kinds of shady people. Or I’d be walking home from a game dressed in my custom made suit from Giovanni’s in Montreal and I’d stop and buy three or four bottles of wine. Then I’d head for the Chelsea Piers between 23rd Street and the Hudson River and hang with homeless guys around a burn barrel shooting the sht. I would ask them how they got there. I’ve always been interested by that kind of stuff. The Rangers must have been sh*ting bricks.”

“you ain’t seen anything yet,”

I’m sorry, I’m at work, so I have to speak good English here. And in doing so, I got the phrased all mixed up.

“You ain’t seen nothing yet” is the correct phrase. Once again, my apologies.
