AYCE Seats & Traverse City On TV
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Thrashers hockey and food two of my top three favorite things! And this season, one ticket gets me both at Blueland.
As Ben Wright over at the Blueland Blog indicates, the Thrashers will be offering up All You Can Eat seats in select locations. $39 gets you AYCE seats in sections 301 and 302 and $69 does the same in sections 203, 204 and 205. On the menu will be hot dogs, popcorn, nachos, pretzels and soda, (sorry, not beer).
Now, as someone who often has two teenage sons in tow when I make my way to Philips, this will be of great benefit. Trips to the concession counter with the whole fam can set me back fifty smackers conservatively estimated.
Taking advantage of this deal a mere three times all but pays for my Center Ice package this year. Hoo-BOY!
Other professional sports teams have offered AYCE seats. The Braves, in fact, have done so over the past season or two. In fact, if memory serves, they also offered ticket packages that not only got you in the gate and fed you but they also provided a $25 gas card to offset the expense to haul you and your crew down to The Ted.
Of course this past summer 25 Washingtons pumped into the suburban assault vehicle might just have been enough get me there but not quite home.
Anyway, the concept of tickets combined with an All You Can Eat deal is a winner and the organ-I-zation is to be commended for offering it.
I just hope they don’t send me a nasty letter after my boys crash the counter multiple time each game.
Traverse City Games On TV
As if AYCE seats weren’t enough good news today here’s more. We can watch the Traverse City tournament games on the NHL Network. They’ll be on tape delay, but hey no complaints here.
Don’t have the NHL Network? Well GET IT!
The schedule so far has the Thrashers/Lighting game airing at 2am on Monday Sept. 15 and the Thrashers/Wings game at 10pm on Wednesday Sept. 17.
Thanks go out to Holly Gunning at Thrashers Prospects Annex for bringing this to my attention on her fine blog.

TSN is reporting the Canucks may be considering tradin the Sedin twins and Matthias Ohlund. Ohlund has a NTC in his contract but the twins do not. All are in the last year of their contracts.
By ranallo10 (in AT)
September 10, 2008 12:28 PM | Link to this
glovesave29 — Short of Kovalchuk, I don’t think it’s possible for Atlanta to acquire any of those players (the twins are a package deal, Ohlund would likely not waive his deal to come here).
I think if any defenseman, Bieksa (the only one without a NTC) is the likeliest target.
As for the twins, if they don’t re-sign in Vancouver I’m guessing they’ll go to Free Agency, even if traded. I’d love to see them both playing beside Kovalchuk and company, but I doubt they’d come here on their own accord.
I love Ohlund’s game though, and would love to see him on this roster.
By glovesave29
September 10, 2008 12:36 PM | Link to this
I’ve read that Ohlund is available so they can KEEP Bieska.
All we have to offer is picks (NOT this years…that for sure, a goalie (which they do not need as Roberto is the best in the business) or a combination of players that would take some roster spots and put them in the financial position to take Sundin if he does decide on Vancouver.
I cannot see getting the twins, we don’t have enough to offer…I agree with you there. But I would love to go after Ohlund.

Vancouver’s defensive corps was brought up last season during the Hossa hooplah…I really think the NTCs will be too hard for them to get around. Unless they can convince Salo or Ohlund to move on, they’re stuck with what they have (poor them!).
To be honest, I think they’re better off not moving anybody. However, if they were shopping Ohlund around, I would HOPE that Waddell gives Gillis a call just to inquire.
I don’t think Sundin will sign there, so I doubt they’ll need to jettison contract in a hurry, which to me means Ohlund will stay put.

Funny, that. I’ve heard that if we traded Kovalchuk for the Sedins, we would be the ones getting ripped off.

Dunwoody_Kevin — Nothing…just like with Kovalchuk in town.
Removing Kovalchuk from the equation (as you implied), this team still has a #3 overall pick who is a stud in the making (Bogosian), a top flight goaltender in need of a better defensive corps (Lehtonen), a youthful defender who played on the Young Stars team his rookie season (Enstrom), and some pieces of talent in the pool that could get any GMs attention (Little, Esposito, Pavelec).
The point is that those players should be unattainable, including Kovalchuk, which means this team doesn’t have the pieces to acquire Tier 1.5 players like the Sedins, or a Tier 1.5 defender like Ohlund.
By ranallo10 (in AT)
September 10, 2008 1:25 PM | Link to this
Alan — Assuming Kovalchuk isn’t in the deal, we don’t have enough to offer that the team should offer to get the Sedin’s. They’d be straight up rental players (I doubt they’d re-sign in the deep south), and it wouldn’t be worth it for one shot. Plus, they want to play in the playoffs, I don’t think they can get that chance in Atlanta this season (just my opinion, you never know obviously).

Waddell isn’t in charge of the marketing department, file your complaints elsewhere.
Alan — I forgot to mention, Kovalchuk for the Sedins is a bad move all over the place, period. Kovalchuk for anyone not named Ovechkin, Crosby, Heatley, or Malkin is a bad move.

I’d cut that list in half to be just Ovechkin or Crosby…but then, they’d have no one to work with just like Kovy does now.

Yes Tim…build us back up. Get back to a playoff team. Doesn’t matter how long we have been around, ya go through ups and downs (unfortunatley with our GM its mostly down). Detroit was once the dregs of the league 60 years into their existance. Toronto is 80+ years only and hasn’t sniffed a cup in 40.
I think we struggle early this season as we learn each other. I am hoping the ASG pulls the plug on ol’ DW just as Harley got it last year. It’s time to try a new direction (or any direction for that matter!). Of course everyone in the AYCE section wont be able to cheer as their faces are stuffed with Nachos and Dogs. I hope they reinforce the seats up there. A section might grow by a couple thousand pounds over the course of 3 hours.

Ever go to Blueland on a Tuesday night in the middle of the season? It’s half full.
Why? Because of the team Waddell has put on the ice.
So, you’re wrong. His job has EVERYTHING to do with how many people are in the seats around the ice. It’s a direct result of WHAT he puts on the ice.

At least in Atlanta, a city accused of having “fickle” fans, there is a measure of accountability by the fan towards the ownership/management of the club. In other cities, not to keep singling out Toronto, their ownership and GM could be the WORST in the league … and it won’t matter a bit. No matter how terrible, how inept, how mismanaged, how bungled the Leafs organization might be in any given year, the building sells out. The fans and corporations buy the seats, no matter WHAT.
When hockey is woven into the very fabric of the community, the GM in Toronto had nothing to do with that soldout arena. That’s got to be frustrating from the point of view of a “die-hard” Leaf fan who wanted CHANGE for decades. Say the name Harold Ballard to a true Leaf fan, and he’s likely to curse and spit at the ground. Then warn you not to mention his name ALOUD ever again in his presence. What Harold Ballard did to the Leafs serves as an example of what an owner can do to an entire city where Hockey is King.
Not even I think this poorly of the ASG. At least the ASG has some mitigating excuses. They’re not good ones. From my perspective, most, if not ALL, of the ASG’s problems are “self-inflicted.”
Stop. Still thinking about it? You should be. What was out of their control? They assembled themselves. They agreed to pool their money together. They were all adults, even Bo Turner. They were, all of them, old enough to know what they were doing.
The thing that has done THE MOST DAMAGE to this ownership group … stems from “inaction” and “procrastination.” Again, these are things that are “self-inflicted.” That’s the truth. If the rest of the ASG had just met the deadline for filing a protest over the valuation of the assets, Belkin’s “Or the rest of the owners can be bought out at cost” clause of the contract would have never kicked in. And, in theory, Belkin would likely have been successly bought out by now … and the owners could operate without any further restrictions, like paying lawyers a hefty chunk.
And wouldn’t that be a HAPPIER DAY than the ones they’ve experience since? Wow. I’ve never seen the Internet simultaneously “nod” in agreement before just now. Except for one fellow up in Cobb County who is shouting at me, “But Brendan, that stupid ‘buy out at cost’ portion should have never been included in the contract in the first place. Which one of the lawyers allowed that gaffe?”
Okay. You got me there. I know when I’m defeated. It was a pretty bad decision to allow such verbiage to even enter the equasion. Say it with me, “bygones.”

So far, Carolina, Buffalo and Boston have released their and this mock up as been pretty darn accurate. The Buffalo and Boston are dead on, and the Carolina differed by having grey hurricane warning flags around the waist and the triangle in the crest is black and not white. Someone did a US Patent office search and did verify these logos (with others) had been registered.
If you look on that site on the right column, there is a series called “rebranding the NHL” A very talented artist is going team by team and designing logos and unis - and for the most part they are vast improvements over what we currently wear.
On another note….instead of being a Thrasher fan, you could pull for the Bulgarian Womens National team. They just played in an Olympic qualifying tournament and were outscored in the four games 192-1. They lost to the Slovaks 82-0 and were out shot 139-0!!!

Gotta like how a perfectly good conversation about hockey degrades into this…! She would be the ideal candidate for the AYCE seats! Of course she would need two of them… and I notice no one is complaining about Kari’s .912 save percentage from last season when we are talking about a goalie with a .402 save percentage!
Ranallo - I know the feeling of using your face to block a shot. When you are moving you mask into place to stop the biscuit, it seems to happen in slow motion - and all the while your brain is wondering what the #$*%^ you are doing. Once the play stops and you have covered it up, the first thing that pops into your heads is “they used to do this without a mask…that is INSANE!”
The comments about “where mama hides the cookies” and “being beaten by a rented mule” from the Pens PBP Jim Lange did lead me to this…who do you think is the best play by play guy? I think we have it good (JP Dellacamera) and bad (Dan Kamal) and previously horrible (Scotty Ferrell) here in Atlanta. But to me the best all time was Jiggs McDonald for the Flames and Dan Kelly for the Blues…perfect voices for hockey and were able to simulcast so that the radio audience got a good mental picture of the action…but not over done for the TV audience.
Discuss…
By ranallo10 (in AT)
September 11, 2008 9:31 PM | Link to this
I definitely agree with you on the Bad, but I’m not a big Dellacamera fan either, so I can’t agree on the good. However, my knowledge of “good” announcers is rather limited, and I usually don’t remember their names when I hear the good ones that I like.
One thing I give Dellacamera credit for is something I didn’t notice until I purchased Center Ice last season…he’s really not too biased towards the Thrashers (home team). Listening/watching to the Carolina and Tampa Bay games on NHL Radio/Center Ice was horrendous…every play by the home team was announced as if it was the greatest thing to hit the frozen sheet, and every play against the home team was announced as if it was something a U13 squad could do. Every penalty was “the worst call”, unless it was for the home team in which case it was blatantly obvious and the ref should’ve been calling them sooner.
I liked listening to the Minnesota Wild games, if that helps you know who it is that is doing the play-by-play.
By the way, when you found yourself blocking a shot with your face mask, would you have considered yourself “raw talent”, or perhaps simply desperate to make a save by any means necessary?
By Tony C.

I like Kamal-the theatrics are over-the-top buuuuut he’s the only guy who’s radio play-by-play has resulted in one of my friends wanting to “go see this tihs live Yo!” He asked me “Is it really as exciting as this dude makes it sound?”
“Usually it’s even more so”
By ranallo10 (in AT)
September 11, 2008 9:52 PM | Link to this
Kamal does have a knack for making the mundane sound exhilarating, I must give him credit for that. I just don’t like how he gets so caught up in announcing the entire players name, where the player is originally from, or trying to do the color commentary for his assistant. Also, his theatrics do get annoying, but when paired up with a fantastic play they sound spot-on.
I will still never forgive him for the “KOVALCHUK’S SHOT HITS THE POST, OHHHH MY THIS GAME WAS SO CLOSE TO BEING OVER…St. Louis has the puck shoots and scores. Tampa Bay wins”. I’m sitting there having a heart attack thinking “the Thrashers could pull this off in OT” meanwhile d-bag is too busy over-exaggerating the near miss by Atlanta to remember that the audience can’t see what’s happening and he failed to mention that Tampa Bay got the rebound, carried the puck down the ice, and scored the game winner. It’s a perfect example of Kamal’s Conniptions that ruin the experience for the audience.
I don’t think I’ll ever forgive him for that night’s near heart attack.
Ever.

From the past: Danny Gallivan, Dick Irvin, Jiggs McDonald, Bob Cole, Foster Hewitt, Brian MacFarlane, and Ted Darling. And even though he wasn’t one of my favorites, I must acknowledge the legendary Howie Meeker. If you have long memories, you might just recall “Howie Meeker’s Hockey School,” which used to air on Saturday mornings. The famous line from his show?: “You’ve got to finish your check.” Howie Meeker probably said this 3-4 times per telecast.
I think the guy for Pittsburgh who says, “He shoots and scores” is Mike Lange. I could wrong, though.
Harry Neale, for all the criticism, is a very good and capable broadcaster who brings a lot to a hockey telecast. He’s with Buffalo, doing color along side probably the best play-by-play guy on radio or television, Rick Jeanerette. Over the years, his catch phrases, “Top Shelf, where Momma hides the cookies.” “I beg your pardon, ladies and gentlemen.” And “Right On!!!” Famous calls?” “May Day! May Day! May Day! Brad May!!” “Woweeee Hou-s-ley!” “Yyyyy-von Laaaaam-bert!” Gerrrryyy Desjaaaardins!! With the fastest Glove in the West!” “He Scoooooores! He scooooores! Buffalo wins it in overtiiiime!!”
Rent enough hockey tapes and DVD’s, you’ll find most of these. Ric Jeanerett’s voice is inmistakeable.

I just think Kamal sounds scripted…like he has a list of silly sayings for when a Thrasher scores written down, and uses them in order off of the list. Doesn’t sound natural to me.
I don’t mind a homer calling the game. I actually prefer it. I agree some can go to far, but a little favoritism for the team you work for is fine for me.
Ranallo - Blocking a shot with your face is just a symptom of doing whatever is necesary to block the puck. MOST of the time it is NOT on purpose. But when I have meant to do it, it happens when you drop to butterfly just as the shot has been deflected up. You cannot bounce back that quick or get your glove up in time - but you can stretch out as far as to can to head it out of danger.

I like both Dellacamera and Kamal. The big problem I have, in respect to radio, is that it isn’t abe to be heard OTP. It’s a joke that the Thrashers cannot work out a deal with a radio station that can get a signal out to where so many of the fans are.

My vote is for Jiggs McDonald, then again he was the only announcer I listened to growing up in Atlanta.

From the USA Today article Knobes cites on his “Camp Roster” blog:
The Chicago Blackhawks will get under the salary cap. Although they probably need to move Nikolai Khabibulin, there essentially is no market for him. That would point to center Robert Lang being the casualty.
I’d hope DW makes the call. Lang’s best years are long gone, but he’s no slouch-plus he may be a good mentor for our young pivots.
It’s a thought.
17/Lang/ArmySlavaMatic(Sterling?)/Crusher/Williams
For the top two lines… Honestly, I’m very keen to hear what Coach Walrus is going to do with Slava…We signed Sterling multi-year, and I know Anderson’s high on him (with good reason), but he has shown that playing on his off-wing is NOT going to work.

Jiggs & Dan Kelly rank at the top of my list.
Best color guys, Boom-Boom and Gus Kyle, who did Blues hockey with Kelly.
The WORST on Atlanta was that Bob Neal, the absolute WORST sportscaster ever in Atlanta, well Steve Sommers was not too good either.
I remember Neal saying on a broadcast… “It looked like it go’ed in Jiggs.” Just Terrible, Jim Huber was not too bad.
Like the NY Rangers guy Sam Rosen, he’s good as well.
The WORST in the entire NHL is Tripp Tracey of Carolina, this guys is just sick to listen to, and talk about Mr. Home Boy !!!!!! You should hear him rag on Atlanta, he is nothing but a worthless little PUNK who Carolina should get rid of.
Cheers !
