NHL Draft-A-Paloosa

I’m a day early with this blog, I know…but I wanted to give you all time to post your predictions of draft order and/or possible deals. Then, as the weekend unfolds, we can discuss how it all pans out.

Although we were led to believe that a coach would be in place prior to the draft…it looks like that won’t be the case. In fact, the first three picks will be from teams currently without a coach.

Regardless…NHL Draft-A-Paloosa 2008 is ON!!

Here are three entries regarding this weekend’s activities for your review and discussion…one from ESPN…another from The Hockey News…and then this one from TSN. All three… surprise, surprise… have Steven Stamkos slipping on a Lightning jersey to start things off…pretty safe bet there.

Depending on which way the L.A. Kings go, the Thrashers will have either Drew Doughty or Zach Bogosian available to select with their third pick. Some have deemed Doughty the defenseman most ready to play in the NHL off the bat and Bogy looks to have the edge in physicality. Either would be a solid pick…and could help the Thrashers defense right away.

But there are other prospects out there that could be considered. Staying with the blueline theme, Alex Pietrangelo and Luke Schenn most likely won’t last past the first half dozen or so picks. And then there is Russian Nikita Filatov, who will probably be the first non-defender picked right after Stamkos. If the Thrashers are looking to choose a center with their first pick, there is Colin Wilson of Boston University.

But, when you have the needs on defense as the Thrashers do, and you have such promising players available…you gotta pick a blueline player.

If I had to render a guess, I’d say Bogosian would be the one who gets his ticket stamped for Blueland.

Also in the first round, the Thrashers are scheduled to pick 29th…the selection gained in the trade deadline deal with Pittsburgh. Personally, I would like to see the team continue addressing defense…maybe a center. But that also depends on what talent is still out there pending the previous 28 decisions.

Oh, and don’t forget the draft party at Philips Friday night. Doors open at 6:00 and the draft begins at 7:00. See ya there.

And In Other News…

How many of you felt a cold chill run down your spine when you read between the lines of Ilya Kovalchuk’s agent in Jeff Shultz’s latest article?

If you were hoping the Thrasher might be able to provide Ilya Kovalchuk with a top line center by the name of Daymond Langkow…sorry.

Igor Larionov and Glenn Anderson are heading to The Hall of Fame!

New to the Vancouver Canucks coaching staff…Ryan Walter as an assistant.

3 Doughty or Bogo. Bogo is supposed to be more NHL ready right now, Doughty is projected to be better in the long run. I won’t complain over either one. #29 either gets packaged to snag a top defensemen or Jokinen. Otherwise, use it to draft another d-man or center. Nemisz (sp?) I think could be a good choice. Lots of good choices still available at #29.

Doughty is the most NHL-ready defenseman available in the draft and if the Thrashers need anything, it’s more NHL-caliber players.

Ouch! Great observation, but ouch nonetheless.

Since some of us here seem to love this topic, I’ve said this plenty of times but will reiterate for the slow (Rawhide):

3 — Bogosian 29 — Gustaffson or Staal 63 — Toews or Carle

I will not be surprised to see Waddell make a trade Saturday to acquire a pick in the second round, he seems to usually make moves in order to get who they have on their board and he’s usually not shy about it. If that trade will be a good trade, that’s clearly debatable.

Atlanta players on my personal trade watch (the ones that would garner a return of draft picks or players, but would actually interest other teams) are:

Exelby, Perrin, a goalie (I hope not), White, Zhitnik (I doubt he’ll be moved), and Sterling (I hope not).

By Rawhide

Alan - That line popped out at me too. Interesting choice of words, but I agree…spot-on observation.

ranallo - I would hate to see Perrin traded…he was one of the few bright spots last season, IMHO. Lots-O-hustle & great on the PK.

But, it all depends on the return, as always. White, on the other hand…whatever we could get. Sterling, I agree with you in the “hope not” department. But he may be one of those with the trade-bait target on his back. Same with XLB…if for no other reason then the D is so bad that, outside of Enstrom and Havelid, any one of our d-men is expendable.

Bogo or Donut with our top pick. I would like to get Staal with our 2nd pick. I would also like Wad to trade Zhitprick/White/Larsen/Klee for draft picks (not going to happen)

Dispite what Wad says…Zhitty Zhitty Bang Bang is not part of our future. I would trade him for a used urinal cake, Damian Rhodes game used jock, or a pillow made from Patrick Stephan’s short and curlies.

And we would still be fleecing the other GM.

Columbus seems intent on acquiring Marleau, probably swinging a three way with Ottawa (Ottawa winding up with the #6 pick?).

Good for them if they can do it. They also have two first round picks with Nash, Zherdev, and Marleau that would be a decent trio, and they already HAVE a defensive system and a goalie.

If we don’t come out of this draft weekend with a NHL-caliber center something’s wrong. We should be able to land a center via trade and hopefully still have the #3 pick to grab a defenseman.

Exelby, one of our forever almost ready to play in the NHL forwards, and the #29 pick for a center.

Buzz — that is just flat out gross, the definition of filth! Pretty much the same as Zhitty’s play last year.

Can’t see us drafting Donut unless the Kings “steal” Bogo. I think even Teflon Don realizes that Bogo’s style, size and demeanor fit our needs to a Thrasher “T”.

Drafting Bogosian would immediately put Kulda on the fast track as well… nothing in this draft makes more sense than Bogosian to me.

I predict Columbus gives up their #6 pick to Florida for Jokinen… can’t imagine Martin would let Jokinen go to a team he actually wants to play for. “You want out of Florida? Have fun in Columbus.”

If we get Bogo… I’d like to trade the 29th pick for Gionta or Cheechoo.

Eklund says that teams are inquiring about Joe Thornton… I…might… actually… yes, I would. I’d give up the #3 pick for Joe Thornton. Still under contract for 3 years at $7 million. Certainly that would get Kovalchuk signed long-term.

I’m hoping for #3 Bogosian and #29 Staal. I’d be fine with packaging the #29 pick in a trade for a d-man.

There are several players I’d like to see lanced from the team, most notably, Zhitnik, Exelby, and Klee.

With Waddell in charge, I actually feel more stressed about the draft than excited. Maybe it’s pre-embarrassment for the nutty deals we could be involved in (haha).

Could you imagine Pittsburgh getting ANOTHER Top 5 pick by trading Malkin to LA?… sheesh.

I’m pretty sure Malkin was moved to the second line and Hossa played with Crosby and Dupuis.

And honestly, I could imagine Pittsburgh landing another top 5 pick. They’ve got a load of talent in the minors, and assets they have no room (roster or salary) for. If there’s a buyer, they’ll take the pick and run.

By Midfield

I believe, they’re getting Cammareli. I also believe that they would not get anywhere close to the Cup finals without Malkin.

Midfield — If those rumors came to fruition that would mean many teams would have a reason to clamor for Dustin Brown and/or Michael Cammalleri. As a “consolation” prize, I’d assume either could be had for that #29 pick, and I’d be all for it.

Hokie — I’d imagine it’d take more than a #3 pick to take arguably the best center in the NHL, especially since he’s got a cheap contract (for his talent level) with multiple years remaining.

I also agree with you about Bogosian making the most sense for this franchise. Kulda and him could spend training camp paired, and if they’re not ready they can either be sent back to Juniors together, or to the AHL together. I’d keep them paired defensively until they become joined at the hip.

I’m curious if Waddell has interviewed Kulda about Bogosian.

Now I gotta cut and paste my comments from the other blogs here, but like GAVA sez, I’m pretty good at that!

# 3 - BOGOSIAN or FILATOV… Depends on what LA does, if LA takes BOGO, we should take FILATOV, NOT DOUGHY…

I would also like Wad to trade Zhitprick/White/Larsen/Klee for draft picks (not going to happen)… Dispite what Wad says…Zhitty Zhitty Bang Bang is not part of our future. Yes, SMOOTHIE, and he is AMERICAN… You how Donnie FRAUDell loves him some American boys!!!

There are cyberspace rumors that Pens are going to trade Malkin to LA in order to keep Hossa. I think it would be a mistake. Not my problem anyway.

MALKIN could be our elusive #1 Center if Silly Donnie would actually work out a trade… If LA does the trade, PITT will have the #2 Pick… I think we would all agree they would grab FILATOV…

Isn’t it funny how all of these teams have “plans” already??? What do we have??? NOTHING. And WHY is THAT???

How do you go into a Draft without a Coach, Not knowing what type of system you will utilize, Not knowing the types of players you need??? Is it just me or does it seem like they are TRYING their HARDEST to do EVERYTHING WRONG and ALIENATE as many of their fans as possible???

GaVaHokie…that’s Massena…Bogosian’s dad played football at Syracuse. Pretty cool!

Check this out:

We have a new workout star, Zach Bogosian of the Peterborough Petes, who is ranked second in North America by the CSB. It’s hard to say who was more impressive, Colin Wilson or Bogosian, but suffice to say both were outstanding.

Bogosian did 19 on the bench and 60 sit-ups, which was the most seen by TSN (though we did not see everyone). Most impressive was his work on the bike. There are a series of trainers here and they constantly shout “encouragement” at the riders as they ramp up the VO2 Max test. Most players just put their heads down and pedal, but not Bogosian. He was very vocal, giving it back to the trainers as though they didn’t have enough resistance on the bike to hold him back. He dropped jaws all around the room with that performance. When Bogosian did his vertical jump, one scout shouted out an expletive in pure marvel. He really got up there.

Drew Doughty (3rd) had a decent workout, but it was perhaps unlucky to be in the same group as Bogosian as they fight to be the first defencemen taken on draft day. On the plus side, Doughty looked a lot leaner than his listed weight of 219 pounds, and it’s doubtful he weighs that much now. Don Maloney was seen (he’s everywhere) breaking off a conversation in order to watch Doughty on the bike.

By Sara

June 19, 2008 1:09 PM | Link to this

Dave why are you so insistent on Filatov over Doughty?? I know you’ve argued to take the best player available (which I think is debatable if you have specific positional holes to fill but…) however every ranking I’ve seen so far has Doughty ahead of Filatov. Maybe it’s just because of the lack of an agreement with Russia? Either way, I’m just really curious about why you would not want a promising blueliner (which we definitely need) for a winger who would certainly be a great player but isn’t something we are in dire need of at the moment?

Alan and I thought it sucked to be a Rangers fan before. :o. I’m trying to remember what started all that mess?? I know MSG sued the NHL because they felt the NHL was taking too much control of something - maybe something about the website? Too bad Bettman won’t seize the Thrashers franchise for the sheer embarassment factor.

By polskidawg

And now for something completely different…

LA keeps their pick, and chooses Bogo, who DW really wants, so:

• Thrash trades #3, #29, Valabik, and Sterling to Nashville for Weber, #9, #15 and 2nd round pick. Nashville picks Filatov to replace Kariya. • Thrash trades #9 and 3rd round pick to Chicago for Barker and 4th round pick. Chicago picks Beach/Hodgson • #15 is used for Jared Staal

The result: DW signs Weber immediately for 4 years @ 2.5mil to 3.5mil, then extends Barker for 4 years @ 1.5mil to 2.5mil.

The defense gets younger, better, bigger, and more skilled, both in offense and defense.

Staal plays one more year in Junior/AHL, and then is Kovy’s opposite wingman in 2009/2010.

Just a thought.

Cool, then we’ll have “Meat Sauce” to replace “Chicken Parm”…too bad we can’t get Bogo and Donut on the same blueline. Then again, Zhitty would prolly try to eat him.

By Alan

June 19, 2008 1:24 PM | Link to this

*Sara - This whole thing did indeed start because of the Rangers website. MSG sued the NHL because MSG felt the NHL violated antitrust laws by “monopolizing control of team promotions.” Yeah, it’s directly related to the Rangers web site.

A judge ruled back in November that the NHL was well within its rights to take control of the website.

In the court filing, a letter from Bettman was also included, informing MSG that the NHL has begun disciplinary proceedings against them for the lawsuit.

As for taking ownership of the Thrashers … eh, I’m not sure I would wish Bettman management of any team on anyone.

On the other hand, it looks like Balsillie might get his US market team in Hamilton, after all.

NHL threatens to boot Rangers owner from league

ALAN! Can we get them to BOOT OUR OWNERS??? For being STUPID as HELL???

Dave why are you so insistent on Filatov over Doughty?? I know you’ve argued to take the best player available (which I think is debatable if you have specific positional holes to fill but…) however every ranking I’ve seen so far has Doughty ahead of Filatov.

SARA - Here is the NASCAR Dave breakdown… I want BOGO, If he is not there at 3, I take FILATOV… This will add some much needed offense that we lost with HOSSA/DUPUIS departure…

BUT, I agree we still need DEFENSE… So, with Pick 29 You take the Best D-Man available…

Now, if Donnie FRAUDell was as samrt as NASCAR Dave, he would attempt to trade up into the The Top 7 and grab both FILATOV AND BOGOSIAN…

Like I stated previously, this will require a trade of Roster Players, Pick 29, possibly more later round picks.

I am fine with any of the following players being traded:

ZHITHEAD, WHITE, KLEE, SLATER, LARSON, EXELBY, LETEMIN, STERLING, STUART, DOELL…

The only other scenario acceptable to me is the one HOKIE brought up about trading down with Columbus to grab FILATOV at 5 and grab the 2 BEST D-Men with the 2 picks we would have at the end of Round 1.

DOUGHTY is a bit too small for my liking… I think we need to stick with NASCAR Dave’s Key To Success #7: NO NEW PLAYERS 6’0” OR SMALLER!!! - ESPECIALLY on DEFENSE!!!

Hope this helps…

Hip Czech — You’re stealing my thunder!! I posted the exact thing the day of the combine…

Anyways, that combine report is what sold me on Bogosian. I had already been leaning towards him but needed that extra push. A person intent on working out, with the talent he currently has, is hard to come by.

A physical specimen and a talented hockey player to boot. That’s a good mix.

The workout report also made me happier with Colin Wilson as a prospect, to the point that I’d very much ponder getting back into the top 10 to acquire him. Though, I think Wilson will be much like Kessel in the NHL, I still would prefer him to White, Perrin, or Christensen as the number 1 or number 2 center.

Such a move (for Wilson) is not likely to happen, so now I’m hoping he only goes to teams I don’t mind watching (so NOT Toronto, any NY team, or any PA team).

NASCAR Dave — As Rawhide stated previously, the first three picks of the draft are held by teams who do not have coaches at this point. It’s clearly not a unique situation we are in.

Sara — Dave has stated before he thinks Doughty (6’0 219) is “Enstrom size” and thinks he’s too small for this defense. His second choice for a defensive pick is Myers (6’7), because he has a feeling about Pietrangelo.

Did I accurately summarize your opinion, NASCAR Dave?

This goes directly against what was determined earlier this week: Waddell can’t read.

Though maybe he has Orwell’s books on tape…

Dave - Can we get them to BOOT OUR OWNERS??? For being STUPID as HELL???

Unfortunately, stupidity in the ownership isn’t a problem the NHL can take disciplinary action against an ownership for.

don’t we already have plenty of 3rd and 4th Line Centers

One of which we signed with great fanfare during free agency 2007 to a four year contract and was put on the top line.

By ranallo10

June 19, 2008 2:23 PM | Link to this

NASCAR Dave — You’re assuming Wilson is going to be a 3rd or 4th line center? Yes, I do remember what you said regarding the “American player Waddell wanted all along“…how could I forget, you say it every second blog!! But your point about Waddell’s move means little to me, as I personally see Wilson as a fine prospect to draft. So if that’s what it boiled down to (him trading down for Wilson) I would be upset over not drafting Bogosian or Doughty, but I’d still be content with the player he acquired.

Zilla — I’m of the same thought process, we’ll see straight picks this first round. That doesn’t mean it’s how I prefer the draft, but that’s likely what will transpire.

Knowing how Atlanta’s luck runs,

I don’t think any NHL top line player will come to Atlanta via trade. No Malkin, no Thornton, no Marleau, no Cheechoo, etc…I don’t think those trades will happen.

But speculate away, that’s the fun part of this time of year.

Hip Czech, what an indictment of this club you laid out there, it makes my head hurt looking at all the guys Waddell has let go.

I hope it’s Bogo and I wouldn’t mind taking Staal at #29, even if it’s a reach, his pedigree talks for itself. When he gets to the show, he’ll have the motivation of keeping up with his brothers.

Doughty LOST 15 pounds in the gym so he would be in NHL shape… 6’0 and 220 lbs is technically fat for your size at 18 years old. So, now he’s 206 pounds which is what the league and himself deemed the appropriate size.

Good Point GAVA… We don’t need anymore FAT A*******ES here… We already have KLEE and ZHITHEAD, do we really need more LARD???

So, uhh, yeah, PASS on DOUGHBOY!!!

OK, substitute Kunits for Thorburn…so, how far does that team go?

In my mind definitely a playoff team, maybe a first round win?

Hey, easy there Dave! Just because Klee looks like Buzz Lightyear doesn’t mean he is a lard-a*. Rather, he is in pretty good shape for an old man past his prime.

It’s not Klee’s fault that he is our 3rd best D-man when he really should be a 3rd pairing guy or 7th D-man off the bench kinda guy at this stage in his long, solid career.

If Atlanta trades the #3 overall pick … and doesn’t get an RFA NHL Superstar in return, then they messed up. I don’t care if it’s Doughty or Bogosian, but one of them has to be a Thrasher draft pick at 3rd overall.

Those are the only two acceptable scenarios. We need a Tier I blueliner prospect. These two are just “sitting there,” ripe for the plucking. To come away without one of them is a mistake. Period, the end.

So, uhh, yeah, PASS on DOUGHBOY!!!

That would be my only fear… is that we’d be calling him Doughboy in 2-3 years if he develops a poor work ethic.

Bogosian is a work out warrior… Filatov couldn’t weigh 220lbs if he drank beer with Buzzilla every night.

Ugh… Hordichuk is back in the Southeast again.

Carolina just gave up a fifth round pick to Nashville for Darcy Hordichuk.

By Alan

June 19, 2008 3:27 PM | Link to this

That may only be temporary, Hokie.

However, Hordichuk is due to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st and if he does not sign with the Hurricanes, Carolina will receive a fifth-round draft pick in 2010.

Oh no, Hordichuk getting 5-7 minutes per game with another team?? AHHHHH!!! :-)

If Valabik would have a good tussle or two with him, I’d be content. Thorburn would get his a* whooped, and Boulton would have a tough time handling him. but it’s not like the last few iterations of the Thrashers have been the pugilist types. Anderson lets his boys drop the mitts, so perhaps if he’s hired we could see a little more BALLS on the ice.

What could Montreal POSSIBLY be offering that would warrant the #3 pick? Just about everybody on their roster has only a one year deal.

Atleast Ottawa is offering up Spezza who has a 5-year contract.

By Hip Czech

June 19, 2008 3:41 PM | Link to this

Habs also have interest in Thrashers pick…

Would we have any interest? It would have to start with Andrei Kostitsyn. Andrei Kostitsyn and Grabovski for the #3 and something.

By GaVaHokie

June 19, 2008 3:49 PM | Link to this

Let’s match the LA and OTT deal… we’ll give Montreal Lehtonen and the 1st round pick for Carey Price and a first round pick.

That gives us until 2010 before we have to qualify a goalie. :)

June 19, 2008 4:13 PM | Link to this

Okay… Buffalo might be interested in moving up. They have two first round picks.

Would you trade #3 for both Buffalo picks (#13 and #26) and Maxim Afinogenov?

By GaVaHokie

June 19, 2008 4:22 PM | Link to this

St. Louis is apparently shopping Jay McKee… they’d be “interested in Doughty if he was still on the board”.

Well, how about we swap places for the price of Jay McKee?

Draft Luke Schenn or Pietrangelo.

I can come up with these scenarios all day. :)

By ranallo10

June 19, 2008 4:33 PM | Link to this

I can come up with these scenarios all day. :)

So you can.

No to McKee, over priced and overrated.

No to Afinogenov, doesn’t allow for a top tier defender to be drafted, thus rendering that top pick useless. Afinogenov’s $3.5M contract expires this season, making him a rental player.

Montreal wouldn’t give up Price. And oddly enough, I don’t want him…I’d avoid any deals involving Montreal for multiple reasons. Kostitsyn has reportedly been offered $1.5M and $4M to return to Russia…so he’s not worth that price tag to stay in Atlanta (which I’m sure coming here would expedite his signing with the Russian teams).

I can shoot down these scenarios ALL DAY. :)

I’m probably the most guilty party ‘round these parts for discussing “scenarios.” But I cannot see one here. Simply put, we must draft either Doughty or Bogosian, depending on which one is left on the board.

If they’re both still up on the board, my preferance is Doughty. I will not cry over Zach Bogosian, if he winds up here. Either one is just fiiine by meeee.

I like the Staal kid at #29, if the pick isn’t shopped. I kinda, sorta think Waddell will move #29 for an NHL player. I cannot and will not fault him if he does, provided that it’s someone decent, with multiple years left on the contract.

But truthfully, it’s better for the organization to draft its own talent, rather than taking a player who signed a contract meant for a different market.

On my lunch hour, I went out and bought two bottles of Maalox to prepare for the Draft. I have “buyer’s remorse.” I really think I should have gotten three. Well, you live and learn, right?

Oh Lord, my belly hurts and tears are flowing reading through this thread. **Zhitnik would eat him.” HAHAHAHAHA.

Holy geez those “all-time Thrashers” lists are pathetic. How about a new project - using current and former Thrashers, put together the crappiest team ever in hockey history. That one should be much easier. Bonus points if it’s comprised totally of FA signings. ;)

Dave small-ish isn’t ALWAYS bad. A team full of smurfs = race for a lottery pick. A couple of well-chosen smaller players = ok. If we had Doughty and Enstrom, then draft/sign/beg, borrow, steal other d-men 6’2”+, we’d be ok. Especially if we consider that Doughty and Enstrom are more offensive d-men. Partner them with bigger guys like Valabik as defensive d-men and it can pair out nicely.

I hope nobody minds me jumping on Rawhide’s blog to comment, but I was reading the suggestion of a trade involving Perrin and had to jump in and point out how weird that would be, considering Perrin is scheduled to be at Philips for the draft.

By HookyBob

I’m thinking DW will do fine with the first pick (how can you go wrong at #3?). He may do well at #29,..don’t know. What I fear is that he’ll trade #29 for a proven 3rd line NHLer,…thinking that pick-up will work on our 1st or 2nd line. Overall, I sort of like DW’s trades (EXCEPT COBURN FOR AZ,…other than that how did you like the play Mrs Lincoln?).

Would really like it if we could somehow trade up enough to get Pietrangelo or Schenn (maybe Tyler Myers or Colten Teuburt depending on the cost) with our 2nd pick. Call me “old school” but I believe you build a team from the goalie forward. As you may have assumed,… I believe Kari is a the first piece. Would also like to see a defensive minded coach (or new defensive assistant). Is dull, but winning hockey better than losing hockey? (ASG please ask NJ, or MN)

Instead of naming the “All-Thrasher” team (which doesn’t get us past the first round of the play-offs),..I ask,…”Who is the best UFA DW has signed?” In my mind it is Perrin (perhaps my memory is too short). So, to trade Perrin, for any return, rubs me the wrong way. This may be more of an indictment of the owners that DW (but again I don’t know.)

As a few others have said June 20th is a critical day in this franchise’s life.

I’m still hoping to be at the Philips Friday evening. Are the gathering at TMs or Gorrins? Stroz,..hope we cross paths. I’ll be looking for the guy with the bullhorn. :)

BTW: Mike,..I (and suspect many others) welcome your comments on this blog. Glad you are reading it and want to be a part of it.

I just peeked in there. I feel bad that I even bothered to post in the column.

I may not agree with everything Schultz says, but the vitriol content of the blog really makes me sad. Hard to fathom where the world in general went wrong, as far as the lack of respect is concerned.

Since the other blog stays in the other blog, I’ll just leave my thoughts at that.

Bob - I’m with you on that. I really wanted a defense-first coach not named McCrimmon, but perhaps Anderson could do something about our lack of scoring. We were last in the league, I believe, in GF last season. I just hope Anderson brings in a more defensively-minded coach to maybe help piece together some semblance of a defense. I think, broken sticks on the ice did a better job of stopping the puck than a certain Zhitty defender.

Nikulin is apparently in talks with Atlanta, and says he wants to come play “in the best league in the world.” However, he also said he has a contractual obligation with his current team (Ak Bars Kazan), and because of that, is in no hurry.

My thoughts? “Maybe next year.” I’m pretty sure he’s staying in Russia for this season.
