It’s So Hot… We Need A Cold Draft!
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
First of all, I want to officially welcome Mike Knobler as the new Thrashers beat writer for the AJC. As you probably know, Mike moves over from covering Jaw-Jah Tech football and I’m sure he will continue his fine work with us over here!
So, welcome Mike NOW, GO MAKE SURE THE THRASHERS SUITS GO GET US A COACH!
Draft Party At Philips
It’s hot how hot, you say? I’ll tell you how hot it is. It’s so hot that the cows are giving evaporated milk! It’s so hot that the trees are whistling for dogs!
Yup it’s been a tad toasty outside lately so how better to beat the heat than to head down to Philips Arena with all our Blueland buddies for the NHL 2008 entry draft party next Friday night, June 20th!!!! That’s right Blueland in June.
Draft-A-Paloosa ’08, (as I have dubbed it), will be held at The Philips Experience and the doors from CNN Center will open at 6:00 that evening with the draft scheduled to begin at 7:00. From what I have been told from my super-secret contact within the organ-I-zation, (yes, I have one of those now), the concessions in the arena will be open and it’s entirely possible that some Thrashers personalities will be available.
This will also be a great chance to check out the new Taco Mac, if you have not already done so.
So, come get out of the heat pick up a cold draft and come watch the NHL draft picks!
Penguins Pecking Away At Wolves
Tuesday night the Chicago Wolves will host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in game 6 of the AHL Finals. The Pens have worked their way back into the series by winning the last two after dropping the first three.
If need be a game seven would be on Thursday night in Chicago.
Sense? We’ll Have None Of THAT Around Here
Ross McKeon of Yahoo Sports posted his final 2007-’08 power rankings, for what it’s worth. As for the Thrashers, he placed them at 28th DUH and he figures that Ron Wilson being tapped for the coaching job here just made too much sense.
Ya think?
Other Items Of (Possible) Interest
Dominik Hasek announced his retirement Monday. Next stop for The Dominator the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Spector think Ray Emery just might have worn out his welcome with the Senators. Zhitnik is also on the list of possible team buy-outs this summer. Please don’t tease me like that!
In Carolina, Peter Laviolette’s coaching staff is getting a make over.
CTV saves “The Hockey Theme” song. Yes, Canadians from far and wide can now rest easy as “Hockey Theme Held Hostage” comes peacefully to an end!
Mike Milbury has a few choice words for Tiger Woods and his “I don’t think anybody really watches hockey anymore” comment. Tiger should concentrate more on his puts and not acting like one.

Rawhide: Thanks for doing the job year round. I really appreciate the fact that you don’t go on hiatus when the Stanley Cup playoffs are finished. Your predecessor’s predecessor Ice Princess never left poolside once the summer rays started. Your prececessor Ice Man left for New Yawk (please tell me it wasn’t the Rags). Keep doing what you do.

I don’t think anyone really watches the PGA anymore.
I’m pretty sure the ratings gurus can prove that for me.
Moving on, the HNIC theme song was never in “trouble,” so it never really needed to be “saved.” CTV didn’t really save it, they just ensured that Canadians (and Americans who are either fortunate enough to get that channel, or people who watch hockey online) will always hear it during hockey broadcasts.
Lastly, I would absolutely love to attend the entry draft celebrations next Friday, but I’m unsure of whether I’ll have a ride home. The last C-Tran bus on my bus route leaves the Airport station at 10:46pm, and I outright refuse to spend $50 to get a cab. So, sorry to say, but I might have to pass that evening.

*Mad Mike’s response on TSN:
“You know what? I’m gonna change the name now. It’s gonna be Tiger Wuss. Here’s a guy that took about three months to get over a simple arthroscopic surgery. You look at [Penguins forward] Ryan Malone. His face exploded with a slap shot last night — he’s back out in 10 minutes! Keep your yap shut, Tiger, or I’ll send a couple of wingers down there — [Penguins forward] Gary Roberts — to tidy you up a little bit, meathead.”*
Amen Mike Milbury! Hockey players-real athletes. Golfers-not so much.

Ugh… I hate when they have the draft parties at Philips. I may have to seek out a bar. Of course, finding one of those on a Friday night willing to put the sound on will be tough too.

Rawhide, maybe the NHL will postpone the draft until the Atlanta Spirit, LLC, gets its act together?
Oh wait. I guess there is a time limit.
Just imagine, Rawhide, when all those other GMs fill Ottawa’s draft floor. And the first one to spot Don Waddell says, “Well, I didn’t expect to see you here! What a pleasant surprise! Tell us your secret?”
And Waddell leans in and whispers, “The key is having a Bruce Levenson in the ownership group.” The other GMs smile. One them proclaims, “Ahh Donny. You can still sell ‘em ‘snakeoil.’ Good show!”
Then Lou Lamoriello saunters by, “Ya know, Don. Some of us actually have to EARN our keep.” Just then, an invited guest, Dave Nonis, shows up to utter, “Please don’t say the word ‘accountability’ in my presence. The wound is still fresh.” And the other GM’s pat Dave on the shoulder, “You’ll get another shot, Dave,” they say, encouragingly.

who in their right mind would go to philips for the draft party and effectively give the ASG more money?
in regards to tiger, it was a dumb comment. however, to have a knee scoped is no walk in the park, especially when you generate a lot of your force to strike the ball from your knees and the spring loading of the hips. it’s probably fair to say that neither sport draws a huge tv share, outside of major events.
here’s to hoping that the wolves finish the job tonight so that the search for a coach can finally get underway.

I want a Cheerwine with my draft !!!
Seems strange that WE THE FANS wanted Ron Wilson coach.
But the all knowing stupid one DUMB don waddell lets him pass like any other good possible coach.
I look forward to a deal down by ole don, maybe we can pick 30th or something, but seriously I look for no relief for the team in the draft as the people in charge want to go the CHEAP route, why Wilson is not coach, and we the FANS pay for it.

jcwhitingjr - Exactly!!!
hoosier_hoser - I’ll be here as along as there is something to chat about. I’m sure after the draft things may slow a bit…but the UFA signing season should, (fingers crossed), give us Thrashers fans something to discuss!

LAC - The fans aren’t paying for it. For the first time in Thrasher history, the Thrashers are selling their 13 and 7 game packages before the schedule is put out. This is a clear sign that full and half season ticket sales suck.
The ticket sales people are feeling our pain as Thrasher fans. Thrasher management is doing what Thrasher management does, panic.
It is obvious the fans have caught on to the FUBAS BS.

who in their right mind would go to philips for the draft party and effectively give the ASG more money?
Why not take advantage of any and every opportunity to voice our displeasure?
Key word here, of course, is voice. You can only speak so loudly with your wallets, and I think that mission is, so far, accomplished. Season ticket sales are down - way down, by the looks of things.
However, the time is now to get out there and yell from every street corner, balcony, and bleacher seat how you feel and what you want.
Silent protests only work for so long before it becomes imperative to take a direct stand and confront the opposition. This is high school civics here, people, and the simple act of protest can apply to anything. You’ve got to do it right, though.
The ASG is giving everyone an open venue to watch the draft. Sure, concessions will be available, but you don’t have to buy.
Send them a message.

Along the same vein as Alan’s comment, if everyone were to start chanting after the number three pick, “Kovy needs a center” or “Campbell, Campbell, Campbell”, a message would be sent and the press would be there to cover it.
Management would definitely realize that the fans were serious and what it was going to take for us to buy tickets for next season.

Alan and Stroz — I personally don’t feel the ASG would LISTEN. They’ll hear it, yes, but do you think they’d listen and respond accordingly?? They haven’t “listened” to the declining ticket sales, they haven’t listened to the declining performance of the team, they haven’t really listened period.
But I’m all for fan unity, so you two enjoy yourself. Personally I’ll be having my own draft party, watching NHL TV on a 62” with my buddies.
If I don’t hear Bogosian/Doughty announced at number three, I’m going to be severely disappointed.
Brendan — Funny scenario, I’d be interested to know if the GMs have that kind of humor. It’d be priceless, that’s for sure.
LAC — I’m not convinced that Wilson would’ve taken a job in this market when being lured by arguably the biggest and most passionate hockey market in the NHL. He’s going to make $1.5M-ish in Toronto, and I doubt he’d be paid $1M in Atlanta. I don’t think Wilson in Atlanta was ever anything more than a wish, even if Waddell pursued him (which we have no clue if he did or did not).

ranallo - I won’t be there, unless I can secure a ride home. Since everyone lives on the northside, well, I’m either walking home from the airport or securing a $50 cab ride from the airport.
All I’m saying is that should you attend, you should give it your all. The time for silent protests are over.
I said it before and will say it again: Look at Toronto and Washington. They protested loudly and vocally in the stands, and they received accountability. Now look at us. Not so much, eh? Yeah, I see it too.

Alan, I have a question. It’s an honest question, not a “loaded” one. Why aren’t the fans in attendance at games chanting, “Fiiii-re Donnn-ny?” Or “We wannnn-ted Willll-son!” (Refering to Ron Wilson, former Coach of the San Jose Sharks.) Could it just be that the fans in attendance are PLEASED with Waddell?
Don’t laugh. The harshest thing I’ve yet seen at ANY GAME at Philips Arena occurred during the All-Star Game. When Waddell’s name was announced, there were “boos.” I remember thinking, honestly, it wasn’t the place for booing him during that event.
But, I did think that any other Thrashers game was an optimum time for voicing that displeasure.
So, if I can offer a follow-up question, “Can it just be … at this point … that the Thrashers have successfully weeded out most, if not all, of their disgruntled fans, such that all that’s left are Waddell-supporters?” Or “The MY TEAM, no MATTER WHAT!” types? I just asking.
By ranallo10
June 10, 2008 5:22 PM | Link to this
Alan — The difference between those three cities is passionate ownership. The TML ownership group, while sometimes misguided by the delusion that the Leafs are God’s gift to the NHL, are definitely a passionate hockey group, who enjoy the sport. Ted Leonsis (did I spell that right) is also a passionate hockey fan, who has made it clear he’s dedicated to winning many times, most recently by signing his name to Ovechkin’s behemoth contract.
The ASG are passionate about their dislike for Belkin…look how far that’s gotten this franchise.

Ya never never know, Ranallo. Maybe when Don’s mug passes through the doors of the Entry Draft, fourteen (14) GMs will simultaneously scream, “Dammit! There went another $50! I’ll get you for this, Burkie!” … all while Brian Burke walks past, collecting Ulysses S. Grant $50 bills from the lot of them. “This is the last time, Burkie!,” yells Jay Feaster. Burke turns to him and says, “Double or nothing Waddell is makes it back again next year!! Feaster says, “You’re on!!” Then Burke turns and smugly says, “On second thought, Jay. I doubt you’ll be here to collect from. So pay up, now!”

Brenden - During one game toward the end of last season when the Thrashers were down 4 to 1, we did get a “FI-RE WAD-DELL chant going. Thrash quickly stopped beating the drum when the chant became loud enough that the other team turned around and started looking in the stands.
If you don’t believe me, PJ heard the chant as well.
I tried the same chant at the last game of the season, but it didn’t catch on, probably because the Thrashers were winning.
By Brendan
June 10, 2008 5:52 PM | Link to this
I don’t know that I was implying anything. It was a SERIOUS question. My “feeling” is that it’s the net result of the ASG “not listening to what it perceives as IDIOT fans who cannot see that the team is headed in the right direction.”
To be clear, I’m not saying the team is headed in the right direction. It isn’t. Bruce Levenson is saying the team is headed in the right direction. Just ask him. And anyone who disagrees with him … I doubt he much cares about. Unless their name happens to be the CEO of Home Depot or Coca Cola. Thennn, I suppose, he’d listen.

ranallo - There’s one thing my parents taught me for situations like this:
“You don’t know until you try.”
So far, there’s been no trying at all. You don’t just roll over because the ownership group doesn’t seem passionate enough. They might be able to ignore 100 fans chanting it at opening night, and maybe be able to ignore 1,000 fans chanting it a couple weeks later. But there’s no way in hell they’ll be able to ignore 10,000+ fans chanting it.
Those owners, while passionate, could no longer ignore it. If you can hear it on TV like I did, then you can rest assured that their respective owners heard it.

Krog and several others on the Wolves are NHL caliber players, why on earth a team like Atlanta would not have a number of these guys there is just beyond me, guess they are not commited to winning in Atlanta.
Gee what a thing to say, just shows all of us what a complete screwup don waddell is a complete FOOL !
Just what is waddell’s problem ?
Just what is the problem with asg ?
They are losers, complete losers who do not want to win, just be within budget…Sell the team and let’s get a real WINNER in here who wants and knows how to WIN !!!!!!!!

Stroz: Coke it is, at least until the 3rd pick. I echo Ranallo’s setiments in that I’ll be disappointed if it isn’t Bosogian or Doughty (sp). And let’s hope we select a coach who can “develop” young talent. Has anyone seen all the article, or picture series (referenced above),on all the talent M Milbury traded away while GM of the Islanders!
Oh well, as Hank Williams says…”the road to love is rocky and tough,…and I’ve traveled it long enough.”
BTW, if I make it Friday evening,… I’ll be the funny looking little man (well, short anyway) in the “Alaska Grown” hat. Just to remove any confusion I’ll wear my “Original Six” T-shirt. (I’d wear my Patrik Steffan jersey but that might be bad luck.)
Maybe we should pick up on Rawhide’s suggestion and meet a Taco Macs before the doors to the Philips open. I’m a regular at their Decatur store and highly recommend TM’s selection of “hopps flavored adult beverages.” I’ll be the funny looking little man in the….ohhhh never mind.
It would be nice to meet others of Rawhide’s flock (aka bloggers). This seems like the perfect gateway to meeting the faithful. Afterall, if you are still following Rawhide & your Atlanta Thrashers a week after the cup has been won,..you’ve got to be worthy.
Correct me if I’m wrong but it is:
10 days (barely) until the draft;
11 days until solstice (longest day of the year,..which is not a good sign);
21 days until free agency;…and…
115 days until the puck drops on the next run for Lord Stanley’s Cup.
I can hardly wait.

BTW2: I’m not a Milbury fan but am onboard with his response to Tiger. To me,… golf is what hockey players (and fans) do once the season is over. Hard to argue with Tigers million$ though. Too bad he wasn’t born in a more northern clime.
BTW3: I’d send Jarko Ruttu after him,… rather than Gary Roberts.

THE THRASHERS SUCK, FIRE THE DUCK
By Brendan
June 11, 2008 1:59 AM | Link to this
Sage, I have a certain degree of respect for the fan who will come out, no matter what. For them, hockey is a part of their culture. It’s their very lifestyle. It’s how to they choose to exist. “Pursuit of happiness” is a Constitutionally-protected freedom, provided that the pursuit doesn’t break any laws. And if the Thrashers weren’t here, they’d go to Gladiators games. Or whatever hockey there was … within driving distance of their home.
But it’s clear that this ownership is beyond pathetic. They transcended “pathetic” quite a while ago. They besmirch whatever panache “pathetic” once held. I’m not sure what adjective is worse than pathetic, but that’s what it is. I don’t see the point of supporting them. If they go out of business, it’s THEIR fault. They own the restaurant that serves the crappy food, that drove away the customers. It’s not the fault of the patrons … who refuse to eat the crappy food at their restaurant. They do not have to frequent the restaurant just because … it’s the “neighborhood restaurant.” If you don’t like the food, don’t go. I suppose some might want to argue, “crappy food is better than no food.” But, it’s not as if it’s a matter of life and death, with the only food within a 30-mile radius served at this horrible restaurant.
I’d like to believe that the restaurant owners would like their customers to return. I would like to think that they’d re-address their menu, seeing a bonafide need for change. I’d like to think … they would fire the existing chefs and replace them with ones who CAN prepare a decent meal. Ya know, meals people would be willing to pay for. The kind of meals that generate “word of mouth” business. The kind of meals that create a “buzz” and an excitement within the community. The kind of meals that make people say, “Now, that’s a fine restaurant. You simply MUST dine there, if you haven’t been. The ambiance is spectacular. The service is exceptional. The food is extraordinary. The wine list is impeccable. There’s live music. There’s dancing. They even have karaoke on Thursday nights! What are you waiting for? Gather the kids, and head out to ‘Chez Pascal’s.’”
As Jeff Schultz opined in a recent Thrashers article, offering up some fairly decent advice to the ASG, “What you don’t do … is NOTHING.” Well, we’ve seen a whole lot of that in this offseason. But now the clock is ticking. They didn’t rigorously pursue Ron Wilson. The least expensive route is probably John Anderson. And knowing this penny-pinching bunch, he’s just what the doctored ordered. Luckily for them, he’s also pretty good.

Honestly Brendan there is a small minority of people like this. But there is a larger number of people who honestly have no idea what the Thrashers record is, who the players are, etc. They are “new” to hockey, and have no idea who Donnie is. When you do vocal protests like this, they have no idea what you are saying, and they probably think you look silly. This is a sad fact. Oh…and “accountability”? You could ask Bob Hartley that question. To date…he’s still the only one to be held accountable for last season.
Yep. Right on Rawhide. Bob didn’t deserve that. It’s a pitiful, embarrassing shame that our owners ALLOWED Don FRAUDell to do that… Hartley was a Class Act, something stupid Donnie will NEVER be!!!
ALAN I think it’s kinda pointless to protest at a viewing party at Philips… NOBODY of Thrashers importance will be there (Management Wise)… Probaly a bunch of wasted money (Especially if you spend it THERE)
The time is NOW to offer JOHN ANDERSON the job… He has EARNED it, and it’s time to get going… The draft is approaching and we CANNOT wait any longer!!!

Could help explain how Donnie continues to fester around… There is NO ACCOUNTABILITY.
There’s probably more truth to this than I want to think about at 4am. Alas, the more vocal people start to get, the more people will ask questions. I’m sure Stroz remembers the game he met my friend Mack at. Even he was up for the chant, after seeing how ridiculous the 3rd period looked.
You can’t expect accountability to be served up to you on a silver platter, you have to work to get it. Especially in a market like ours, where the Canadians routinely think we’re one of the “poorest” markets and the Thrashers should be moved to someplace like Flin Flon, MB or Whitehorse, YT.
Indifference is a b***, isn’t it? Well, we’re about to find out.
ALAN I think it’s kinda pointless to protest at a viewing party at Philips
And I think it’s kind of pointless to not speak up for what you believe in.
And with that, we agree to disagree, do we not?
As far as coaching is concerned, here’s my short list:
No one else deserves the bench job here, in my eyes.

Can someone clarify this. Wasn’t Joel Quenneville offered the Colorado Avalanche job? Is that not a done deal? Also, Jeff Schultz, a month ago, said that Brian Burke’s deal with Anaheim wasn’t “finalized.” Are these deals fully consummated now? Schultz’ article was called, “Spirit’s in need of a game plan, Thrashers GM.”

Brendan — Burke has another year left on his current contract, and rumor has it he’ll be going to Toronto following the conclusion of that contract. The NHL has already “warned” Toronto not to poach Burke this season (due to his contract status), so it’s been assumed that means they’ll continue their pursuit next season (and it’s also rumored that’s why Nonis declined the job, as he’d be a rental GM).
Also, Quenneville and Colorado mutually separated, and Tony Granato was promoted to the head coaching position. That was done in May (the 22nd).

I don’t know that DW wants to give up what Quenneville would cost out of his bonus

Well, darn, I have been “invited” to my boss’s 40th at his house on Friday, the 20th at 6PM. What is the time of the draft on Friday?

That’s right. I remember now that it would be Granato’s second stink with the Avs. That’s kind of a curious move. But, I wish Colorado good luck.
I have to think that John Anderson is the most likely target for the Thrashers. He’ll come cheaply. He’s coached many of the Thrasher players. At this point, I’d be surprised if it weren’t he who was announced as the next coach.
