Red Wings & Penguins: I Predict…
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Ok kids, first of all a show of hands. How many of you, back when the playoffs began, picked Detroit and Pittsburgh to play in the Stanley Cup Finals? For those of you who did congrats and well done!
Of course, yours truly picked Montreal and San Jose to duke it out two teams that went down in round two to the teams that then fell in the conference finals. I am, of course, dealing with this in my normal, professional, mature, calm, controlled demeanor.
Nevertheless, given that “success” rate, I’m reluctant to make any predictions here except to say, (and I know I’m going waaaaay out on a limb here), that Sara and Wings Fan in GA are probably going to go with the Detroit.
I think the “logical” choice here would be to go with Wings. After all, they have been motoring their way towards this position from the get-go last fall. They finished the regular season leading the league in such stats as GA/G, (2.18), S/G, (34.4) and SA/G, (23.5). In fact, if you consider those numbers as well as G/G, PP% and PK%, the lowest they ranked in either of those stats is penalty killing and that was 84.0%, which was good enough for eighth best in the NHL. It would seem given all that, and the fact that they are 12-4 in the playoffs, the Red Wings are simply playing their role in what is merely a coronation ceremony to the cup.
But just ask Hillary Clinton what can happen on the way to a “coronation ceremony” these days.
The Pittsburgh Penguins, 12-2 in post-season, have been putting together quite a run these past several weeks and their numbers during the post season match up pretty well against their opponents. Let’s compare, shall we?
G/G: Pittsburgh-3.64
Detroit-3.44
GAG: Pittsburgh-1.86
Detroit-1.94
S/G: Pittsburgh-32.3
Detroit-36.3
SA/G: Pittsburgh-27.9
Detroit-23.6
PP: Pittsburgh-24.6%
Detroit-21.0%
PK: Pittsburgh-87.3%
Detroit-87.3%
Now, take into consideration the men between the pipes. For Detroit, Chris Osgood is 10-2 with a 1.60 GAA and a .931 SV%. Not too shabby for a guy who wasn’t even the starter for the first four playoff games. On the other end of the ice, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled a 12-2 record with a 1.70 GAA and a .938 SV%.
Fairly even, eh? So, if you look purely at the numbers, this could be a hum-dinger of a match-up. And if you’ve been paying any attention at all to these two teams, they look like two high-speed freight trains smack-dab on a collision course.
The two teams did not play each other during the regular season but, as you will recall, two players on the Penguins do have at least one game’s worth of experience against the Wings this past year. Marian Hossa remembers it well, I am sure.
One last thought, for what it’s worth the Pens have won the first three games in all three playoff series this spring. Against Ottawa they went on to win game four. Versus the Rangers and Flyers they bounced back after game four losses to take the series in five. Detroit has come out on top in the opening two games of each of their playoff match-ups and only against Nashville did they fail to take a 3-0 series lead. So both teams are adept at getting the jump on their opposition.
If I were forced to make any forecast on what will unfold it would be to look for seven very entertaining and close games. Maybe, if we’re really lucky, we will be treated to an overtime “instant classic” game on Saturday June 7th to decide it.
In Other Sporting News
Could the NFL be heading toward the same type of work stoppage that we hockey fans endured three seasons ago?
Middlesbrough defeated Manchester City 8-1 in English Premier League soccer action. That’s right the Teesiders notched eight count them eight goals in a single soccer game. I think that uses up their entire months quota for goals that a team is allowed to score.
You think the TV analyst who stand between the benches during an NHL game are close to the action? Well, this photographer found himself a little too close during a track meet in Utah. WARNING: Not for the squeamish!

WWWEEEEEEEEEEE I’m having so much fun this post-season. Well, except for games 4 and 5 of the Dallas series - that wasn’t so fun. Well, and the fact that the Thrashers didn’t make it - that really stunk too. But besides all that….. :D
A few weeks back on the Nasty Nest, during the series with Colorado, there was a discussion about the dominance of the Red Wings, whether or not they had any weaknesses, and how things would play out. My comment at the time, was I’ll say that I’m not overly worried about either Dallas or San Jose (not that they are gimmes) but I am actually more concerned about an Eastern team - the Pens to be exact. They play a somewhat similar style to Detroit in terms of fast paced, up and down action and that could make things very interesting in a Finals series.
Heh - how ‘bout that for foresight. I still stand by that statement. If any of the other 15 teams in the playoffs this year could make me nervous as a Wings fan, it’s Pittsburgh. They are sickeningly good. In my heart, I want the Wings all the way (with a little jab to Hossa - “No Cup for you!”). And it’s certainly possible, I won’t concede a darn thing. But rationally, this series is WAY to close to call. Neither team has faced an opponent this skilled this post-season until now. Will the younguns in Pitt be able to handle that? Mostly, I think yes. Fleury I think would be the weak link there. He hasn’t faced anything like Homer - who Fleury should pray doesn’t consume anything resembling beans or Mexican foods anytime in the next two weeks. Also, odds are Fleury is going to get lit up like a Christmas tree, at least at some point. Can he shake it off? I have more faith that Ozzie can, which is a good thing since he will also likely get lit up like a Xmas tree in this series. The question to me is really which goalie is going to get lit up like Charlie Brown’s xmas tree or the Rich’s/Macy’s xmas tree.
Detroit has better D - positionally and overall (two top scorers = two Selke finalists). They are not going to be intimidated by the talent of the Pens. But the Pens are deeper than the Wings, particularly if we can’t get Franzen back and that could be the deal-breaker. If Detroit can roll four lines and stymie the Pens (preferably while aggravating the dickens out of them and drawing stupid penalties), they’ll cruise to success. But shutting down one line, maybe even two, isn’t going to work for the Wings. They have to shut them all down while hoping the Pens can’t do the same. It would also help if Kronwall knocked a few blocks off early - maybe one a period, working his way through the top two lines. (yes yes, very unsportsmanlike, I know - but who cares….this is war!!!)
It would be sooo much better if I didn’t have an interest in this series because this is going to be some amazing hockey. Unfortunately, I won’t be impressed at this point with anything that Pittsburgh does, unless it involves a complete and total collapse.

Long time no see everybody! I am back to action. I was too busy with my family. Now let’s talk about Final. My pick was Detroit vs Washington. Well, I got 50%. Detroit is in Finals, but Russian-Capitals players won Gold medals in Canada. I am Detroit fan since 1994 it was my first game to watched in NHL. Wow, what am I doing???? I talk to much. My result is Detroit get Cup on 6 games. They have to do it, because we are going to Florida at Saturday, June 7. I will be driving all day. :-(

I had San Jose v. Pens in the Finals with the Sharks winning it all.
My head says Detroit takes this series, but I will certainly be rooting for the Pens.
A few misguided people have completely discounted the Pens saying their D and goalie is awful.
The facts posted by Rawhide above, and my own eyes watching the games, prove that assumption to be wrong. So, the Pens can clearly take this Series, it will not be lopsided. The question is, will Crosby and Hoss just go completely off? I could see it, those two are jelling quite nicely and I could see them having a tremendous series.

Rawhide, I had Pittsburgh vs. Anaheim, with the Ducks repeating as Champs. Yeah, that’ll happen. Ducks were out in the 1st round. At least the Penguins got there.
I want to think about it a bit longer. I’m weighing Red Wings in seven vs. Penguins in six. If Pittsburgh has to win Game Seven in Detroit … it’ll be a tall order. That’s the beauty of this series. It could be just that close. I can’t see a sweep, either way.
The Game Sevens that I can remember were 1987 … Flyers vs. Oilers. Glen Anderson iced it “late” in the 3rd. Then the Rangers over the Canucks in 1994. It came down to the final seconds. In 2001, Colorado won Game Six in NJ, then Game Seven in Denver. I think it was a 3-1 final score. Good game, not great. In 2003, the Ducks forced a 7th game, but the Devils put on a defensive clinic, 3-0. In 2004, Tampa won a “nail biter” with Calgary, 2-1. Good game. Great series. One of the very best. In 2006, Carolina was facing a choke of epic proportions coming into Game Seven. But they jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Edmonton got to 2-1, but an empty-netter sealed the deal for the ‘Canes.
I’ve never seen a Game Seven, in the Cup Finals, go into overtime. In that Tampa-Calgary Finals, Game Six went into double overtime, I think. And Marty St. Louis scored. Had Calgary scored, the Flames would have won the Cup. Of course, a disputed “non-goal” was reviewed ad nauseum about a puck that deflected off Martin Gelinas’ skate and caromed precariously close to over the goal line. Khabibulin’s pad was in the net, along the goal line. Conclusive evidence of the entire puck crossing the line was never found. So, it didn’t count. Credit Flames fans for not holding a grudge over what might have been a Stanley Cup winning goal, late in the 3rd period.

Your analysis leavesout one key point: The Pens play in the eastern conference, Detroit in the Western Conference. Has Detroit has played against tougher opponents or have the Pens? Since I am not a keeper of stats, how did the Pens do against Western Conference Teams compared to how the Wings fared against the East? Anyone know? One thing for sure, I watched Pittsburg and the Flyers and I did not see the same quality skating and passing that I saw with Detroit-Dallas or Dallas-San Jose.

Pittsburgh in 7. Hooossssaaaaa! Go Pens! How does the fact that the red wings are 12-4 in the playoffs mean anything? The Pens are 12-2!

I see Detroit winning this rather easily as well.
The Wings superior team D is going to lock down on the Pens, and in the process I think the Pens defenseman are going to resemble what they are…an average unit at best.
The only wildcard is how many penalties the Pens can draw per game. The Pens only shot at the series is to hope for 8-10 Detroit penalties a game. And as we saw in the last Wings game, they can be suckered into that kind of punchy affair.

At the beginning of the season I had the Sens picked to best Detroit in the final. I stuck with my prediction even into the playoffs since last year I had the Ducks over the Sabers which I thought turned out to be a pretty good guess. However, I started leaning toward the Pens when the playoffs were getting closer, and since my original pick is out, I’m saying Pittsburgh skates the cup in game 6, but I would like to see it go to 7.

Jameson — I had Detroit and Ottawa too, but Detroit winning in 6. I was WAY off last year though, as I didn’t think Anaheim would beat Detroit (my West finalist) or Ottawa (my East finalist). And yes, I guessed Detroit vs. Ottawa two seasons in a row at the beginning of each season.

Lots of storylines. I’ll take one that hasn’t been mentioned directly,…youth vs experience.
I’m going against my brain and with my heart in picking the Pens,..in at least 6 games. Icing on the cake: GWG by Pascal Dupuis.
Bob, I was one who picked the Rangers over the Pens because I felt the Pittsburgh defense was suspect. I’m a believer now. One additional thing I have noticed is how well the Pens forwards back check. Is there anyone better in the league than Hossa at picking a player’s pocket from behind? And, after Sunday’s game, I suspect he has been giving Sid some tips. I think the series may turn on how well the Pens forward backcheck.
(Makes me wonder if the Thrashers losing streak after the trade deadline was due in part to much weaker backchecking.)
Experience vs youth,…I gotta think the Wings are getting tired. 100 games against Western conf teams has got to take its toll. I wonder if the Pens will play very physical?
Experience vs youth,… Osgood vs Fleury. I say shoot at Osgood from the center line. He seems to let in the goofiest long goals. Can the Pens D keep things clear in front of Fleury? I doubt it. That “modess operandi” was very effective against the Stars. I suspect they’ll keep on clogging the front and shooting high from the side. Fleury will see a lot of Holstrom’s gluts up close and personal.
Experience vs youth,… the coaches..maybe not such a good comparison…I gotta like the Pens here. Therian seems to have a knack about sensing which players are hot.
Finally, experience vs youth on the offense. Do these Pens remind anyone of the 1991 team? Who was the 3rd best Pens forward in 91 (mabye Recci)? These Pens go really deep: Crosby, Malkin, Hossa, Stall.
Tiebreaker: What is each team’s records against your Atlanta Thrashers?
Finally,… say the Pens lose. What are the chances of their UFAs signing a one year deal at less than market to have another run at the cup?

I bet if the Pens do not win, Hossa signs for a couple to try again…

Yep, I’m picking the Wings. I picked the Wings before the playoffs started (it’s in writing too). I didn’t pick an Eastern Conference team, don’t really follow it, just the Thrashers and, well, we all know what happened there. Four games, five games, six games, seven games, I don’t care - I just want the Wings to win the Stanley Cup. … To all diehard Thrashers fans, I feel your pain about having a bonehead general manager and owners that don’t care. Detroit’s lousy football team is just like that and us Lions fans are going through that too. But anyhoo, GO RED WINGS!

I think you guys are forgetting something: Rutuu.
He’s shown a willingness to go after the other team’s top guns, and by and large, has gotten away with it.
Now, he might actually get called against the deadwings (because there are so many deadwing d!ckriders everywhere in the hockey world-it’s almost as bad as the TorontoMapleLeafs), but if he receives as much leeway as he’s been given earlier in the year, I think we can expect to see Franzen and Datsyuk litterally knocked out of commission.
I would definitely thinky that Franzen will be a marked man and let’s not forget Pittsburgh features more than a couple guys who can really bring the lumber.
I believe that is the key for Pittsburgh-we’ve all seen how well Detroit has handled the “less-skilled” teams trying to outmuscle them, but I think anyone would agree, Pittsburgh is one of the few teams that can skate with Detroit-all the way through the lineup. Which has been Detroit’s answer to that sort of challenge: “You can’t hit what’s not there” and then making no mistakes when the other team takes interference calls trying to hit them. The other “weak link” that pundits point to in both teams is their Goaltender position. I think Fleury having to fight off Conklin (who was a revelation this year), helped him immensely-certainly he’s exceeded many “experts” opinions. You can say that he hasn’t really been shelled, but I would say to look back at the past tow series and see that he has bounced back very well from losses.
Osgood’s re-dedication to his craft this past summer has really shined this post-season; I don’t think he ever used the butterfly style before, but we’ve seen him mix it into his repetoire very successfully this spring. As far as his ability to stay “short memoried”-I would say that it is one of Osgood’s biggest strengths, along with his unquestionable work ethic.
Should be a great series, I hope it lives up to the hype.

HookyBob - You’re welcome regarding the link…just part of the service.
As for the Wings and Pens records against the Thrasers…Detroit is 0-1-0 and Pittsburgh is 2-1-1, one of those wins via shootout.
Wings Fan - Interesting comparison between the Lions and Thrasher’s front offices. I think it has a lot of validity, and that’s scary indeed.
Everyone - One thing that crossed my mind Sunday as the Pens were celebrating on home ice their conference championship…what do you think Anderson and Christensen are thinking right now???
Oh, I’m sure if forced to answer they would give the proper “I’m just glad for my friends and the fans of Pittsburgh…blah, blah, blah…”.
But it’s gotta suck for them, ya know.
Lastly - Wolves beat Marlies 4-1 in game 3 played in Toronto. Pavelec with 30 saves on 31 shots. Chicago now up 3 games to none and have outscored Toronto 13-2 so far.

The Pens are not the team to beat Detroit. They’ll play a couple of entertaining games, but that’s about the best it will be. The Pens just don’t match up overly well. In fact, I’d say the Wings are the team that the Pens want to be.
The Pnes are perhaps the best puck control team in the east, but the Wings are better. And the Pens aren’t physical enough to stop Detroit from doing what they want to do, and god help the Pens anytime they head to the box.
My prediction, average shots on goal are about 35-25 Wings to Pens, and at least once the Wings are going to throw 40+ shots on poor Marc-Andre. Oh, it’s gonna get ugly.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe at least Armstrong has played enough games with the Pens this year to get his name on the Stanley Cup if the Pens win. Not too sure about Christensen though. I believe it is a team decision, and I don’t think the Pens would seek to reward them for being part of the deal that helped them win…if that happens.

Detroit in 6. But you knew I was going to say this. There are very compelling reasons to believe Pittsburgh will win, but you have to remember which team has the better team defense.
For example, let’s take the top two scoring leaders from each team. Crosby and Hossa have 21 and 19 points respectively, as do Zetterberg and Datsyuk. Crosby is +6 while Hossa is +7. Meanwhile, Zetterberg is +15 and Datsyuk is +12. Top three? Okay. Malken and Franzen. Malken has 19pts and is +5. Franzen has 15 pts and is +9 - and he’s missed three games with “concussion-like symptoms.”
It’s not hard to see which team is more defensively minded overall, while still being an offensive powerhouse. Now this isn’t a knock against Pittsburgh. I wish both teams well. But I will be rooting for my Red Wings to win it all.
