Blueland Bargain Basement Bonanza
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Howdy folks welcome to the BLUELAND BARGAIN BASEMENT BONANZA!!!
That’s right! The thump you just experienced was the elevator in which you were riding landing smack dab in the basement of the standings! Occupying the space here with the Thrashers are the Tampa Bay Lightning and Los Angeles Kings. Technically, we are a couple points better then they are but given the way things are going, we should soon have the entire bottom level to ourselves!
If you get lost during your stay, please seek out Bruce Levenson and he will be sure to have you “moving in the right direction” right back down here!
Before we begin, I simply must thank our good friends Spector at Fox Sports and Scott Burnside of ESPN for getting the word out about what is going on down here!! Great job, guys!
Now, we are holding a clearance sale here at the Quad “B” and we have a plethora of items that SIMPLY MUST GO!!! So, step right up and, please, no crowding we’ll make sure to point out everything of interest!!!!
First In need of an aging, slow defender? Why, we have just the thing for you! Today we have the Alexei Zhitnik special where the original price of $3.5M has been slashed that’s right, SLASHED to an amazing $1M .that’s ONE MILLLLLLL-ION DOLLARS!
Any takers? Anyone? Oh come on! This particular piece of stock cost us Braydon Coburn, for crying out loud! Certainly someone has need for this! Nothing? .OK, ok $19.95! AND we’ll throw in the new Rhinestone Stud Applicator and Knife Set from Ronco!
And now step right this way. You need a turnstile? A tollbooth attendant? We got ‘em both! Just choose from any number of Thrasher defenders. They’ll stand by as traffic flows through them never once detaining anyone at an entrance, a freeway or a blueline!
Aaa-Aaaa No, no, no lady hands off Enstrom. He’s not going anywhere! There are plenty others to choose from.
Next up oh, and THIS is a dandy! Yes, indeed!! Have you ever thought to yourself, “Self, I need me something that will help keep items of value looking as good as new”? Well we’ve got just what you’re looking for guaranteed to keep anything you have looking as new as the day you got it!
Uh-huh! It’s the Don Waddell Product Preservation System!!!!!
That’s right, place Don Waddell in charge of managing your car, your home, your surround sound home theater system or expansion NHL franchise and ten years later there is no real difference in it’s appearance than the first few years you had it!!!
Coulda used this the day I got married! Hahahaha ..ha sigh. Tough crowd.
Sure all things age, even improve. But with the Don Waddell Product Preservation System, anything that allows the product to shows signs of aging, even improvement that come with such aging as the years go by, will be cast off!
That NHL franchise of yours got a coach that improves the team every year he’s behind the bench? Not to worry the DWPPS will step in and return the product back to its original luster and shine!
Compare for yourself Thrashers of ’07-’08 Thrashers of circa ’00-’01 you see if you can tell the difference!
Anyway, act now and we will throw in, at no extra charge, his 17 whole regulation wins in JUST 73 games as acting head coach this season alone! Yes, obviously this is a team he put together himself!
So folks today in the Blueland Bargain Basement Bonanza the Don Waddell system simply HAS GOT TO GO!
Once again, thank you for shopping at the Quad “B”. Take your time gang! Shop around! We will be open all summer as we need to make room for next season’s product!!
Next year’s NEW and IMPROVED product, that is After all, the owners of Blueland are indeed actually committed to improving their product, aren’t they?

Simply nuts, to hear waddell say todd white is PART OF THE FUTURE ???
To me that means Back to The Future of MORE LOSING. todd white is a COMPLETE BUST, needs to be waived, along with a lot of other dead weight this team has around it’s neck, including the Master of Disaster DUMB don waddell.
Are there ANY used car lots in detroit that need a slick guy who thinks he is a legend in his OWN mind, and can do anything, but accept BLAME for his joke job of being a NHL GM ?
I assure everyone… Not ONE other NHL team would put up with another second of waddell’s actions. He would be FIRED so DAMN FAST he would not know what hit him. But as long as these CRAZY idiots own this franchise who the hell knows what to expect.
Fire waddell, sell the team , there is now NO OTHER CHOICE…
BTW levenson, I am STILL waiting for you to accept my offer in a street fight, but being the Potty Mouthed Coward you are… Your actions or lack of tell us ALL what type little b******* WIMP you are !

Part of Don Waddell’s plan is to give our worst players tons of ice time down the stretch, that way their stats will be inflated and then DW can say “they played their way onto the team next season”….see the terminally awful Jim Slater as example #1 of this.

Don Waddell does not need to be telling any Thrashers player anything except… I am sorry I am such a $UX coach and Awful GM and I have resigned from the team,That is all he needs to be saying… Not one damn thing more. He is an embarrasment to the city of Atlanta, and a disgrace to the world of professional hockey !

Rawhide I’ll pay the $19.95 for Zhitnik only if he can pull weeds and I could use Charmin to pick up the dog Zhit in the yard. Can I get a BOGO on that?

Only 3 more games to suffer thru…the Tankland effort remains a success at this point, although a shot at real progress was stymied with Holik’s two goals down in Sunrise on Thursday night. Whose side is he on anyway? It will be interesting to see who wants the wins in the two upcoming games with the Lightning. If the Thrashers play their cards right…meaning they go all-in and then fold.
Last night’s game was entertaining, wasn’t it? The Carolina Diving Team looks to be in late season form for sure. Too bad for them that the judges will be using a critical eye in the playoffs.
As for the Zhitnik, I fear DW will be couinting on him to resurrect his game next year as he plays for a new contract, be it here or elsewhere. Personally, I don’t see how any GM could pass up the $19.95 deal for Zhit plus the Stud Applicator and the knife set — I will even waive the $19.95 if they give us an 8th round draft pick.

Thanks, PJ, but if I’m going to spend money on a forward, I’d rather go with Thorburn or Boulton - at least I’ll know the two of them would show up if someone tried to mug me. Right now the only D-man I’d have faith in to do the same is Valabik.

Don Waddell is a pitiful and pathetic joke of a GM and/or coach…He had the nerve to say of the referees, “That’s why some of them don’t ref playoff games…”
Well, Donny, after nearly a decade of YOUR decisions, I don’t wonder at all why we’ve never even won a single playoff game.
The more this buffoon opens his mouth, the more rot which spews forth…There was a time when he talked all of the time to the media—and the wittle bwuewanders bewieved every word! (HaHa!)
But, those days are long gone, as he’s wised up and kept his mouth closed around writers such as Jeff Schultz (the only AJC writer with the guts to call this disaster what it is—and call a gold-painted turd a turd)…
I wish some others would finally wake up, wisen up, and stop subsidizing the utter incompetence…

This organization has set my expectation level at zero for offseason moves. So, when we sign Steve Montador, we’ll probably jump for joy, thinking it an “exceptional” move. All while the ASG minions on this board say, “See, told you they’d fix it. Steve Montador will lead us to the playoffs.”
Look, I don’t care if they do add Montador, at the right price, and as the “final tweak” of the offseason, it might be actually be allright. But the larger point is … if they don’t get a new decision-maker in here, to be the GM, nothing will change.
You can’t tell me that the players operate with “blinders” on. And that they only see their next shift. They are, alllll of them, well AWARE of the ownership situation and the difficulties at the GM position. They are company EMPLOYEES!! They CARE about their future.
How many of you go about your jobs, focusing exclusively on the task at hand, and not, sayyy, pondering the future of your boss’ tenure, and the viability of the company you work for? Or the company you run, if you’re the boss. The point is, you’re always thinking about the future.
Well, NHL hockey players are no different. Are they “confident” in Waddell’s abilities? Are they “motivated” to work for a guy that they more than likely view as a “lame duck?” Even if he somehow survives this offseason, the ax could fall at ANY TIME during the upcoming season. Waddell is not under contract past 2009, unless they just extended him. His contract is a National Security Secret that is none of our business, apparently. We’re just the paying customer.

Question… Why is it our defense has been awful since the start of the franchise and Don Waddle, who has proven over and over and over and over he cannot draft, he cannot coach, he cannot sign worthwhile UFA’s and is still allowed to remain in the GM position ?
Are the people running this team really that stupid, not to see his history ?
I am willing to bet a year’s pay that not one other team in theNHL would keep Waddell after this dismal season. He has been a complete failure in every aspect of the team operation.
Do the owners only look at his work since they bought the team ?
Why would they ever consider keeping him ? He is a joke among other GM’s in the league, he is weak and not willing to give young players a chance, instead he just keeps brining in old worn out players who are just trying to hang on for maybe another season. Our star players wanted and want out, because they want to win and Waddell does not want to win !
He is just a crap GM, not one any NHL team would want, why O why the people running this team do not see this and refuse to fire his has to be one of the new mystery’s of the universe for sure. He must be terminated one way or another !

Just how bad is it for the Thrashers right now???
So bad that apparently the ASG has talk the sports guys at the ajc into linking the Hawks - Bulls game story to the Thrashers - Hurricanes headline on the Thrashers page of the sports section.
That’s pretty bad!
Anyway…I could have been at the Barry Manilow concert tonight, but The Divine Mrs. R ask me if I wouldn’t mind letting her go with some chick-friends. Much as it broke my little heart…I, being the understanding type of husband that I am, relented and gave up my tickets as did the boys!

Yeah that Raleigh Diving team was something to behold huh?
I notice that nobody really wanted a piece of Vikki…then again I don’t blame them.
I tell you if NYR are dumb enough to let Avery go FA-we should sign him…..yes, I hear the sighs-but just imagine having him on our team. Stop. Breathe deep-try not to let last spring into your mind-imagine A guy who plays hard, stands up for his teammates, gets under the other guy’s skin-oh, and he chips in O-ffensively as well. Imagine a guy that is upsetting the other team’s top players-imagine a guy who’s got the starch to just go into that heap of nasty because, somewhere, (at the bottom probably) Enstrom is having a different sort of testicular cancer test.
I’m not saying we have to get Avery, but get me somebody like that. Get me a guy like Jon Sim who’s got the stones to drop ‘em with a guy he knows will destroy him, because he wants his teammates to “snap out of it”.
Get me some guys with heart. But most of all, get rid of the guys without.
P.S. I dunno about re-signing Recchi

Tony If we pick up an agitator of sorts (eventually)for the love of god don’t let it be Sean Avery. He is a punk on AND off the ice. His own coach called him cancer in court during arbitration. TB has 71 w/ 4 to play.
We have 72 w/ 3 to play.
Tony C - As I sit here, I would hate seeing Sean Avery in a Thrashers uni. That being said, I would love the Thrashers to have a player that gets under the skin of the oposition the way he does.
Recchi??…I’ve enjoyed having him on the team…thought he was a great pick-up when we got him. But he isn’t the type of player a team needs when they rebuild.

The 3rd from the bottom has a 14.4% chance of winning the #1 pick. The second from the bottom has an 18.8% chance of winning the 1st overall selection. The 30th place team … has just under a 50% chance of winning the pick.
I hope we get to at least pick 2nd overall. That way, we get Doughty.
Let’s face it, Waddell will make our draft picks again this Summer, barring revelations that he’s mixed up in dog fighting or betting on hockey games.

Problem with waddell still GM it is heading the wrong way on a one way street and disaster awaits next season too.

I really do think that they had every intention of selling this team before the Lawsuit that might or might not have really just been about Belkin realizing that he was with a bunch of idiots and wanted out. It would be interesting to know what the progress of the suit is. I truly doubt a change will be made before the suit is resolved. This is a case of the expectations of fans clashing with owners who are out of town, and / or quite honestly could care less about the second or third most popular pro team in town. Is it possible that the team moves, yes. But I just don’t see it. This town is far different than it was in the 1980s. I refuse to believe the Hawks actually draw better than the Thrashers. I refuse to believe that any market mentioned in the press is better than ATL. We are one of the fastest growing cities in this country, and our economy is ok, relatively speaking. The Braves went through a bad period. The fact is, that in pro sports, team fortunes wax and wane. Do I feel that Waddell gets fired, yes I do. Levinson saying that he was going to hire a “hockey guy” might well have been code that it will happen soon. But rest assured, it will happen. If Kovy walks, it may happen very soon.
Root for the team because you’re a fan of the game, not because the game is going well. Do I wish I were in Philly, Nuuw Yawk, Pitt, or a laundry list of other places? YES!!!!!!!!!!!
But not really for Hockey reasons.
-Peace and Love, B.

Rawhide, it looks as if the L.A. Kings will wind up last and get that nearly 50% shot at winning the draft lottery. Let’s say, just for the moment, that happens. Who should the L.A. Kings take? Well, obviously, what they need most is goaltending.
But … (And you know where I’m going with this) goaltenders take years and years and years to develop. See Kari Lehtonen, six years removed from the 2002 Draft. So, if you’re the Kings GM, what do you do? Do draft a goalie? Do you trade the pick for a proven goaltender? Do you take Steven Stampkos, the #1 ranked prospect? Do you invest (again, years to develop) a pick in a blueliner like Doughty? Hey, he’s the #1 defenseman prospect; that’d be quite a 1-2 punch, Doughty with Jack Johnson, for the future. Rob Blake’s future is limited in L.A.
Next issue, the season “finale” between the Thrashers and Bolts could be for “four-pecentage points” in the lottery draft. Irrespective of the outcome of the game, I am hopeful that Atlanta can pick 2nd overall. Needless to say, I’d like them to win it all! But, statistically-speaking, that’s improbable, unless the Thrashers somehow manage to finish DEAD LAST.

Then again, I can see they’ve learned something from their hero Donny: Keep the utter bluster to a minimum, especially when the facts have shown them to be embarrassingly wrong.

Thrashy Thrash - I like that they are bringing up LaVallee. The remaining games this week are really nothing more than an extended preseason for next year…let’s see what he can do and get some games under his belt.
If he is as physical as has been said…all the better.
Brendan - If you are the team with the #1 pick, you take the #1 prospect, Stampkos. Whether that’s the Kings, Atlanta, Tampa Bay…whomever. I think he could make the most instant impact. Then, if you’re the Kings, throw as much money at UFA defenders as you can….or if you’re the Thrashers, you do the same.
But when you have the chance to get, pressumably, the best talent in the draft…you get him.
georg - Most of Atlanta’s hockey fans have woke up to the fact that this organ-I-zation needs to make some serious changes…from the top down. The problem is, IMHO, the people who CAN make those changes either don’t see it or don’t know enough about the game to understand it.

I agree with your philosophy, Rawhide. Take the best available talent. Then manage your roster as best you can from there.
I was re-reading some articles, and I caught a quote from Waddell about Kari’s next contract. He said, paraphrasing here, “We could go either way.” Meaning, a one-year deal, leaving Kari a chance to potentially sign for more money in the next off season. Or, some longterm deal. Then Waddell added, “Kari can’t become unrestricted for another 3 years.” Well, that would mean 2011, right?
In terms of a potential RFA offer sheet for Kari, the other team may offer 5 or more years, knowing Atlanta’s reluctance to go beyond 4-year contracts. If Waddell is really thinking about re-signing Kari for only one year, I’d be surprised. Maybe Waddell does have an extreme level of confidence in Pavelec, such that he’d be willing to subject Kari to another potential RFA offersheet in 2009. It’ll be interesting to see how that plays out. Kari’s numbers shouldn’t justify a large contract. But the organ-I-zation may do well to “lowball” him and extend out the years. Perhaps Waddell is hoping that will be the strategy of some other GM, and then he’d simply match the RFA offersheet. That’s “wishful thinking,” on Don’s part, if that is his thought process. For the RFA offersheet to be successful, the offer has to either be susbtantively overvalued or be excessive in terms of its length. If an owner like Charles Wang (Islanders) needed a goalie, he’d be the sort to have his GM lackey offer 10-years @ $3.75 million-per-year. Would Waddell and ASG match that sort of offer? Who knows? If more GM’s around the league figure out that Atlanta’s ownership is just trying to flip the team for a profit, they will become more likely to attempt to shop at “Chez Thrashers,” knowing the organization is hesitant to take on more salary before the team is sold.

Alan - tsk, tsk young man! No…none of the Blue Crew are on the blocks, per say.
Now, maybe NY Ranger Sean Avery can “hook” you up with something.
Nikita - Damn, Rawhide. Hope the missus spanks you good for that one - It was a joke!!!!
It was a Jo-o-o-o-o-ke! :o)
Bob - Isn’t it funny how a year ago the last game of the season w/ the Bolts looked like it was going to be the deciding factor in the SE crown. This year….it could be for dead last in the conference.
I guess Tampa Bay is “moving in the right direction” as well.
Brendan - I still feel like the team would do well to lock Kari up…a three year deal. Hedberg, much as I like him, should be on his way out and Opie needs another year before having the starting job heaped upon him.
So, get the deal done. Keep Kari in the net as the starter…bring up Opie to back him up next season.

By Nikita
March 31, 2008 9:44 AM | Link to this
I really can’t decide what I’d like to see with the goalies…but my gut says keep Hedberg another year. In his favor, Hedberg has a composure that is awesome. His fundamentals (clearing the puck, passing, handling the puck, etc.) are much better than are Kari’s. He’s much more mentally steady and doesn’t melt down as much. And I don’t know that Pavelec is ready. And I don’t know, even if Pavelec is ready, that we’ll have at least one healthy 1 or 2 goalie at all times… On the other hand, it’s very hard to play two goalies with anything approaching equal time. How could we possibly play three? Especially if we can’t get any of the three to be durable enough to play the majority?
I like the new kids and feel hopeful about the draft. But I think we still MUST have at least 2-3 capable D-Men off free agency to be competitive next year. I think we can get by without a top center, especially if we manage to train up one or two of our new recruits or old hands.
Finally, since we’re headed into the offseason, there are a few things I’d like to see starting in training camp next year. Discipline, fundamentals, and conditioning — and any individual player who isn’t willing to provide all three should be waived, traded, or otherwise kept away from the rest of the team lest they poison it.

P.S. I actually feel very sympathetic to Zhit at the moment. He’s being publicly humiliated, and seems to suggest that he has been privately humiliated since he showed up for training camp. Maybe he deserves it, but I doubt he’s that much worse than some of the players who are actually playing. Plus, it’s not very smart for DW to handle him thus — basically he’s maneuvered Zhit into a position where we can’t possibly offload him. It would have been a lot smarter for DW to schedule Zhit in the way that makes him look best, and then trade him.

Hey we should keep the moose at least he is better than Dunnam was!

Besides we need moose to teach Kari how to handle the puck better before he leaves. I mean if Kari could handle the puck like moose then he would basically be a great all around goalie. So we should keep moose for one more year to let him train Kari in puck handling skills. In addition Pavolic gets one more year to become NHL ready and everyone stays happy.

Good point about Zhitnik, Nikita. What’s the plan? Is he going to replace Rucchin next year?

Looks like it. He’s expensive and has put in a bad season this year. And he’s not a marquee name or young. So, if we put him on the waiver wire (which is what I think DW wants to do with him), his chances of getting picked up are minimal. He might get picked up on re-entry, but that would put us in the sucky position of paying him to play against us. What annoys me most about him is that he’s capable of being a great asset, and that’s why we bought him. On the right team, or on this one under the right conditions, he still might be valuable. But at his price, it’s unlikely that he will end up anywhere but on our roster.

I meant to say on our roster and not playing.

Waive Zhit! If someone takes him on re-entry, great! If we wind up paying 1/2 his salary, that’s OK with me. Better than 100% of it and have him possibly play FOR us!
I know that sounds mean, but come on, we need a total overhaul on defense…he has to go.
maybe, for his sake, going to a team that has an actual system of play will help him too.

No…none of the Blue Crew are on the blocks, per say.
You’re breaking my heart here, Rawhide!
And no matter how good it is, I’m not sure I want to … ahem … follow up Sean Avery’s play, if you know what I mean.

Rawhide, I ride MARTA after dark a lot…
You shouldn’t do that, young lady! Wait, so your telling me you are single too? A female blogger on here that is not married? Hmmm…
And it’s funny, because for the longest time I thought you were a dude… (Based on your handle/name, of course)! :-)

It is really is sad. That you guys ,who are major fans of hockey, have been reduced to talking about what should of, could of, or would of been. Unfortunatly this is the norm in Atlanta the last 10 years.
It’s a shame you can’t enjoy the game of hockey like you should be able to.
ASG/Waddell should be ashamed of its lack of ability to produce a playoff round one winner in ten years.
I’m glad I dont follow the Trashmen.

Careful, ThrasherRyan - if the hockey police accuse you of treating the sacred hockey blog as a dating service, you could be relegated to the kitchen and/or be forced to watch Lifetime movies for the remainder of the season.
Just out of curiosity - how does riding MARTA at night = being single? :-)

Forcing anyone to watch Lifetime movies would fall under the definition of “Cruel and Unusual Punishment” as addressed in the U.S. Constitution.
In fact, I think the only place it would be considered morally acceptable is at Guantanamo Bay while interrogating terrorists.

LOL! If not, it means your boyfriend/husband has no class! What kind of guy would make his significant other do that? Not me! But then again, i’m currently single… maybe I should team up with Alan and let Rawhide hook us up with the Blue Crew!

Well, who cares? Our team sucks, so I might as well get some use out of the blog… It’s worth a shot! Nothing against you, Rawhide, you keep us going through the hard times!

Rawhide, you willing to play matchmaker for Thrasher Ryan? There’d be a 7th man story in the making - bringing true love to Thrashers fans from the wreckage of the 2007-08 season. ;-)

See, when the team sucks, we find other creative ways to have fun in Thrasher Land!
Hey Nix—I can give you one of my old Sherwood sticks to bring on the Marta. I don’t think many people would mess with you then… a high stick to the face is not too appealing…

Thanks, Thrashers Ryan, but I’m not sure how my fellow commuters and co-workers would feel about me hauling a hockey stick around with me daily.

Nix—Since Ogre Valabik is 6’7”, would he have to duck down on the Marta? It’s been so long since i’ve been on one, I can’t remember the height in there. But, I will ALWAYS remember the rancid odor!!!
And I hear Colby Armstrong has been chaffeuring(sp?) Ogre, Bryan Little, and Christensen around town, so maybe he can hook you up with a ride here and there? But that might also make Nikita jealous… ;)

Wait a minute… I thought we wanted to LOSE this ONE! They are not helping Operation Stamkos when they go out and do stuff like this!!!
KL = Good job with the shutout!
Brendan—I still don’t understand why Waddell is not trying to get KL signed up now. The longer he waits, the higher the price gets…
Like I said before, I’m ready for Lehtonen/Pavelec next season. Moose will get good money elsewhere.
Did anyone else see Thrashers prospect Andrew Kozek get the Game Winner yesterday for Univ. of North Dakota? It was NICE.

Thrasher Ryan, I missed it the North Dakota game. I’ve missed too much of the NCAA Men’s hockey.
Waddell obviously plans on waiting until later in the Summer to talk to Kari’s agent. Waddell usually says something like, “Kari’s agent is on vacation and should be back in about 6 weeks. We’ll meet then to talk about the contract.” Everyone’s clear that Waddell didn’t really say that? Good. But it’d be “par for the course.”
