Kari Backs Up Emotion With Action
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Kari Steals One
Kari Lehtonen has got to be thinking that the big Thrasher logo on his jersey is nothing but a giant bulls-eye to opposing teams. For the second time in as many games, and third time in the past four, the defense in front of him allowed 40+ shots to get through on goal. Thursday night, however, Atlanta snuck out of south Florida with a 3-2 victory thanks in great part to the work of the Finnish net-minder.
He had to manage his way through four Panther power plays in the first period to buy time for the offense to show some life. It paid off with eight seconds remaining in the opening session as Bobby Holik sent Atlanta to the locker room with a lead.
Lehts was lights-out and his stellar effort was great to watch. He faced 45 shots, all evenly space through the periods 15-14-16. If you think about it, that works out to having to make a stop every minute and twenty seconds during the game. And that’s just the shots ON goal it doesn’t count all the near misses and heavy traffic in his midst. All in all, it made for a very busy night!
Maybe he is also starting to wonder if it’s no small coincidence that there is no “D” in Atlanta Thrashers.
Before surrendering a goal with seconds remaining in the game, the only other puck that found it’s way past Kari was on a break by Florida’s Nathan Horton halfway through the second period. It was set up when the Thrashers were caught flat of foot in the neutral zone and Horton made a nice move at the blueline entering the zone.
Regardless, great job Kari especially since your defense in front of you continues to play like horse .horse uh, horse something or other.
Little Effort
Not to be overlooked by Kari’s play is Bryan Little’s effort that led to the Thrashers’ second goal of the game. Deep into the third period he took on a Panther defender, won the puck and fed a perfect pass to Mark Recchi after looping behind the net. It was the type of aggressive play that has not been seen too often of late.
As gloomy as this season has turned out, he is one of the bright spots and I’m looking forward to seeing more of him in the seasons to come.
Long Time Coming
Thursday Night’s win in Sunrise, Florida was only the seventeenth regulation win of the season for the Thrashers in 78 games. It was only the fourth since the All Star break and the first on the road since Kari Lehtonen shut out the Washington Capitals 2-0 back on February 2.
The win keeps alive the possibility that Atlanta could still finish as high as 13th in the conference.
(sigh) I know, I know.

Yikes… First…
Real nice effort tonight even got a good number of shots !!!
I guess we are moving in the right direction… we have not lost in about a week.
On the other hand… With this win, we move to fourth from the bottom.
While we want to win, we need that number #1 pick to grab this Stemkos kid… he is GOOD… So kinda mixed on the win.
LA 6 back, TB 3 back St.L tied, but we have more wins than St.L.
So tough choices as the season closes…

KL displayed mental toughness. At least until that second Panther tally. Ouch. But what the Hell! The Finn turned in a solid performance mentally and physically. Congratulations. Could tell by reaction that goal in closing seconds unnerved him. Hey, young man, a regulation win is a regulation win! Operation Falcon (tank) temporarily on hold. Thank God! Victory was really nice. Pleasant dreams all!

Kari was good all season. He faced 32+ shots on goal every game he played. He will 25 at November. I am really recomend to Don to offering him contract around $2.2, 2.4 and 2.5 mln per years. Yes, it will be 3 years contract for $7 mln. I hope he will take it. Bobby was bust his a* to scored two goals, but we still do not need him. He has to go. Someone said that we need to Draft a Center (Wrong Idea). We have Centers and we do not need them anymore. We have to buy a Couple GOOD D-men. Havelid and Toby are good pair, but anybody else just SUCKS….. Ex, Mak, Pops, Valabik, Kiwi, Klee and Hell Zhitnik are Horroble D-men. They are all third pair with limited minutes to play. Summer Wish List:
1. Draft good and Strong D-Men Or Trade a First draft to Solid First Pair D-men (Cambell or Chara stile)
2. Buy it Solid First Pair D-men
3. Get smart and expirience Coach
4. I want to say get new GM, but it will not happend!

My opinion of what we need…
Acquire 2-3 top D-Men. Round it out with Klee/Pops/Kiwi/Valabik/Ex/whoever’s serviceable. Expect to lose Klee and Havelid in the next few years, replacing them with more young talent.
Get the offensive house in order. Possibly hire a top center. Alternatively, take all of the forwards that we have, many of whom are young and 3rd-line-quality now, and work hard on pushing them to whatever potential they have. Hopefully you have then raised a top line center and you don’t have 5 people switching out on the 3rd/4th line.
Resign aging talent (32+ if the person is a producer, 27 if the person isn’t) only for limited periods, at reasonable prices.
Operation Heat on Ice. Or Fire on Ice. Just sayin’. (PJ and Nix, rethinking Ex and Christensen.)

Maal - I LOVE those commercials!!!!! I just got the NHL Network a couple of weeks ago, and those commercials may be the best part.
I’ve gotta say, this may have been the first time I’ve really rooted against the Thrashers (its a lot easier when on the couch than in the stands). We could’ve been 1 point out of the NHL basement in line for that first pick. So close!!!!!
Operation Believe in Tankland continues tonight in Carolina. I think I’m gonna watch basketball instead…it really isn’t fun rooting against them.

And the way the draft lottery works, you don’t have to be in the cellar to win the first overall pick.
Despite the chance Atlanta has to sink and draft a top tier player this summer, I’m still rooting for the team. I find rooting against the team very depressing.

Newbie question:
Who gets to be in the lottery for the 1st overall pick?
By TableHockey
March 28, 2008 11:22 AM | Link to this
Nix - the way i understand it is that all teams that don’t make the playoffs get to draft in order from lowest to highest. The exception is the lottery which allows the winning team to move up in draft order up to 4 spots.
I’m not 100% on that - I’m sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Who gets to be in the lottery for the 1st overall pick?
Only the bottom five teams.
By FormerIslesFan
March 28, 2008 12:30 PM | Link to this
Alan, I don’t think that is correct. I think all of the non-playoffs teams are in the lottery with a decreasing chance to win based on how well/poorly they did (last place team has the best chance). The rule is that a team can only move up a maximum of four spaces so only the worst five teams have a shot at the first overall pick.

Here’s the best explanation I found of the NHL Draft Lottery. Former Isles Fan is right about all 14 teams being in, but only the bottom five have a chance at the No. 1 overall selection.

Thanks, all. I guess the long and the short of it is, the Thrasher don’t have to lose all of the rest of their games, but they should try to stay in the bottom 5 if they want a chance at the 1st pick.
Unfortunately, that shouldn’t be too hard for them.

Here are 39 unrestricted free agents, waiver pick-ups, re-signing of Atlanta’s own UFA’s listed from 2004 to 2007. See any Brian Campbell’s, Jay Bouwmeester’s or Andreas Lilja’s on the list?
Adam Smyth, Alexandre Giroux, Bobby Holik, Brad Larsen, Chris Kunitz, Cory Larose, Darren Haydar, Dave Caruso, Denis Hamel, Derek MacKenzie, Eric Boulton, Eric Perrin, Fred Brathwaite, Glen Metropolit, Jaroslav Modry, Jason Krog, Jean-Pierre Vigier, Joel Kwiatkowski. Joey Crabb, Johan Hedberg, Jon Sim, Karel Pilar, Ken Klee, Kevin Doell, Kyle Wanvig, Mark Recchi, Mike Dunham, Milan Bartovic, Pascal Dupuis, Peter Bondra, Ramzi Abid, Rico Fata, Scott Barney, Scott Mellanby, Steve Rucchin, Steve Shields, Todd White, Travis Roche and Vyacheslav Kozlov.
If I am going to pair up defensive partners, without dreaming too much, I like a puck mover/offensive threat paired with a stay-at-home guy. As much as I’d like to keep Toby and Nic together, next year I’d split them up to add size to the pairings.
Enstrom-Salvador ($2 million?) Havelid-Hainsey ($2 million?) Klee-Exelby/Popovic/Valabik
Not sexy, but Salvador is a strong defender and Hainsey is a puck mover and can play in all situations. Plus, he’s a lot cheaper than Campbell and at 27 (6-3, 209 pounds) can be here awhile. Playing with Havelid, he’ll benefit in many ways.
Salvador isn’t well know and like Nic does more than meets the eye. He’s 32, 6-2, 220 pounds, and is worth a three-year deal. Both can log a lot of minutes.
$4 to $5 million per year for these guys means you can look at adding one or two solid centers to replace Holik and Rucchin’s roster spots.
There aren’t a lot of top UFA centers to be had, so it might take a trade to get immediate help to plug that void.

J(Z), yes, the top 5 (worst 5 clubs) are in the lottery and if you finish the worst, you get more ping pong balls in the drawing than the 2nd team, and so on. I’d like to finish in the worst 3, Operation Tankland is a go.
Here are 39 unrestricted free agents, waiver pick-ups, re-signing of Atlanta’s own UFA’s listed from 2004 to 2007

Kari played great but not unusual. I’m glad people noticed for a change.
DW says he is not looking for a center and that we have plenty. We had plenty this year and last year. We did not have the right centers for this team. We do not have a first or second line center. Two years later, someone figures out that Bobby can keep up with Kovy.
The Thrashers inherited Bobby’s salary. People seem to forget that. However, he does contribute to the team wherever he is told to play. He stands up and says what needs to be said. Some of those penelties everyone talks about have stopped a goal for the other team. Some of them, are letting the team know not to mess with his team. Everyone takes bad penelties and he has had far fewer of those this year than last.
I think the big issue is that we do not have the right combination so there is too much ice time for some of the players. Cutting ice time for key players is more like trying to get that number one draft pick to me. DW has already proven that he does not mind doing things or making statements about players that hurts the perspective of them for his own gain.
By J(Z)
March 28, 2008 3:50 PM | Link to this
PW - If I remember correctly the Thrashers did NOT inherit his salary. The Rangers had him signed to a ridiculous contract…and after the lockout were able to buy him out. Then he became a UFA, and Waddell signed him.
By kracker
March 28, 2008 6:06 PM | Link to this
Yes, Holik was a bought-out FA and DW signed him for 3 years at $12.75M. The queation now is if Holik will resign here for a third of that. Maybe the better question is how high will DW offer to resign him. Much too high is my guess.

Don Waddell will not be fired. ASG is retaining him, so give it a rest. Focus on what we need to do in the offseason. Primarily 2 top 4 Dmen and impactful depth up front so we can sustain a forecheck.
By the way, this is what DW told STH at the recent town hall and seems to be consistent with opinions posted here for weeks.

Carolina leads, 3-0, in the 2nd period. What can you say about the way the ‘Canes elevated their game after the season-ending injury to Brind’Amour?
By Rawhide
March 28, 2008 8:43 PM | Link to this
Brendan - One cannot say enough about it. Truely an impressive all-around team effort by the Canes…at the EXCACT same time the Thrashers completely collapsed.
They lost Brind’Amour on Feb. 14th….we caught them the next night after that thrilling shootout win in New Jersey. Seemed the division was ours for the taking.
Silly us!
ThrasherNY - Good question…I’ve asked into it.
Reality One - Here is where I agree with you. I fear that you are correct that the ASG will not relieve DW from his GM duties. Because since BL hasn’t a clue how to find a quality GM, he has to figure he needs to keep Don or he might have to put some effort into finding out what it would take to bring in a replacement.
Yes, we need to address our D…problem is that you could copy/paste that comment from 11 months ago. We needed help at center and defense over the summer.
Don’s answer…Todd White and Ken Klee.
Results….17 regulation wins in 79 games after tonight, worst GA/A, worst S/G, worst SA/G, worst 5 on 5 goal ratio, more than likely worst record in the East when all is said and done…and a twenty point drop off from last year.
This season is squarely on DW hands. He gave us “smaller” and “faster”, He made the decision to fire BH, (the only man you can link ANY measurable success in this franchise),…HE talked BL into staying behind the bench, HE wasn’t able to convince Hossa that an atmosphere of winning was prevalent in the organ-I-zation.
Any OTHER franchise this was the situation and he would be gone.
Yes, Don will probably remain next year…you seem to agree with that decision.
I respectfully disagree.

Hey, if we’re gonna lose, at least LOSE LIKE MEN! They seem to be doing that, everyone is hitting tonight! Could we set a new record for penalties taken? I know Holik has at least 2 already.
This is crazy! Flipping between the Thrash, the Hawks, NCAA tournament, the Braves, it’s hard to keep up!
I might just stay with the Thrash for the 3rd period… I wanna see some more fights dammit!!!

Well, let’s see if DW gets it done. If his offseason moves aren’t met with optimism by the paying customers, and the team lays an egg in October, I just hope it won’t be too late. There are “right and wrong” times to fire a GM. Is April 7th the wrong time??
Kovalchuk’s future in Atlanta (2010) hinges on DW’s 2008 offseason moves, including free agent signings for his line on July 1st. Many of these contracts could be “multi-year” deals, impacting our cap for years to come.
Now, if they’re grrreat offseason moves, all the fans will dance the jig. And perhaps Kovalchuk will re-sign with Atlanta down the road. But the ASG must learn … that if they screw this up, many fans aren’t coming back. They won’t renew season tickets out of “pity” on September 10th or so. They just won’t get renewed. Period, the end. And that’s not good for ANYONE.

I hope so. But in reality, I think he is only focusing on the Atlanta Hawks right now. You know, the BETTER of his 2 teams right now…
We’ll see though… April 7th will be the day many decisions are made. If not by the ownership, by the fans.

Ex — the 7th Man photos from last year (where he’s touring the fans around the practice facility in a baseball cap) make him look affable and fun, which is a relatively short trip to cute. Also, he really does look ok in the Blueland promos. I think the key is hair and weight management. Plus, he’s suddenly gotten better on the ice, as well — though he and Stevie Mac will be in my dog house till next season, at least, based on the rest of the season.
On youtube there’s a video of Christensen and Jocelyn Thibault playing their musical instruments (guitar, drums) — they both look relatively good there (Thibault is really cute), and Christensen is way more relaxed/friendly than usual. Plus, in general, scoring is sexy…I like Christensen’s general style, and will like him more if he stays healthy and begins to produce consistently.
