Town Hall Meeting And Tanking

Town Hall Meeting Tonight Before Wild Game

By now, all STH should have their invites to the Town Hall Meeting hosted by Don Waddell that is slated to begin at 5:30.

I hope all that are able to attend will do so. Regardless what you think about the ASG, Waddell, or the direction of the team… whether or not you support the current GM or feel a change is needed…this is a chance for you to hear directly from the man. He will address those he obviously understands are upset with how this team has played over the past several weeks and you will be able to give back your thoughts and concerns.

Personally, I commend him for doing so and for setting up the forum.

I look forward to reading the comments and observations from those who will be in attendance.

To Tank Or Not To Tank

I’ve heard a lot of chatter in here and in Craig’s blog about wanting the Thrashers to phone in their games and lose. The thought process being to “aim low” and go for the draft pick positioning. However, I’m not a fan of the idea.

Oh, I understand the logic…but as I sat in my seat last Wednesday night, knowing the chance of post-season play was a long shot at best, I still wanted my team to win. In fact, I want them to not only win…but to win the rest of the games from here on out!

It would be awesome, would it not? Were it to happen, and the team go roaring into the playoffs on a 13-1 tear, I would post a “Don, I was wrrr…I was wrrrr…I was less-correct-than-I-normally-am” blog… and I’d do it with a big, fat, hairy smile on my face!

Now, do I expect that this will be the case? No…I’m a dreamer, but I’m not delusional.

However, every game they play, like tonight against Minnesota and tomorrow in Florida, I WANT them to win THAT game, or at least FIGHT hard to win that game. I just can’t root for them to lose.

Sorry, it isn’t in me.

Burn Baby, Burn

OK, I’m sure most of you all saw this on Craig’s blog already, but it’s worth reposting here. My question for him is this…will he be attending the Town Hall Meeting tonight to deliver the urn of ashes to Don?

I’m with you about losing for a good draft pick. As pathetic as this team is playing, knowing that they are intentionally losing just to get a good pick, would be the last straw. At this point I don’t expect them to win the game, but if they showed some effort and played their butts off, I’d be alot happier.

I went to wed game and saw that pathetic mess. It was unwatchable. It looked like carolina was on a 60 min power play. Maybe that is what some people want so that we can get a good draft pick but that p** me off bad! I’d rather see them play good and win or if they don’t win at least play entertaining hockey.

I can see the reasoning behind tanking, but tonight’s game is supposed to be televised over here, so they better not do it tonight! This is the first game I will get to see all season since the three other times Armed Forces Network showed the Thrashers either I was busy or it didn’t actually come on but was substituted by another game.

If any game of the season was going to be entertaining, this one is for the folks overseas and they better get it right! Pass that on to DW at the Town Hall so the guys can kick it into gear.

I must admit, though, that for the past few night games I have not bothered to get up at 3a.m. to listen to them (I did listen to the afternoon games last week). Just couldn’t justify going short on sleep for that kind of performance. But I would very much LIKE for it to be worth it for the remaining few. If they show me something tonight I will make the effort.

LET’S GO THRASHERS!!!

Perhaps fans will have an opportunity to hear about Waddell’s next 5 year plan. Anything other than an anouncement of Waddell’s resignation is just going to be spin. There is no reason to go to this sham. Performance speaks louder than words, and the performance of the Thrashers throughout Waddell’s almost TEN YEAR career has been the very definition of mediocre.

Tanking is something that no TEAM should ever be permitted to do. Any player who is purposely tanking needs to permanently banned from the sport.

However, as fans of the team, as the founder of Operation Believe in Tankland, and for the good of the future of this organ-I-zation…I hope we lose any many games as possible to get the best draft pick possible.

With THAT said. I go to almost all the games and I do NOT root for the team to do poorly. I also just don’t got it in me. I’m just not as disappointed in losses now.

This team is now 6 points ahead of the Kings for the worst record in the NHL. For the good of our future…our motto should be Go Kings, Go Nings!

Rawhide I’m part of the tank-it camp, but that doesn’t mean I WANT us to lose. Honestly, I think its neccessary for the improvement of our team that we get good draft picks (which is made much easier by good draft position).

We are not singing Brian Campbell or Wade Redden (or anyone of their quality) this summer. I’m sorry, but there are 29 other teams out there, the majority of which are far more tempting to sign with. I hate saying this but, Bobby Holik is the biggest UFA we have managed to draw here (and it took a grossly inflated salary).

What on earth makes anybody on this blog think that Top Tier free agents will be willing to come here? What incentive do they have? Does complacent ownership draw FAs? How about a team with no coach? How about a team that has proven time and time again that nobody gives a flying !@#$ the entire way up the management chain. Ladies and gentlem, look at the reasons Hossa cited for walking. Why would another top tier UFA sign here after watching that situation?

Manley - Hey dude!! How’s it going? I hope the boys play up for ya tonight!

Left to Right - Obviously he is feeling some heat. But this is better than taking a bunker-style mentality. I’m sure we’ll have much to discuss about it later when we hear from the attendees.

ToF - OK, I think what you said about the inability to bring in high-caliber talent, especially on defense, is spot on.

But then, isn’t that the most damning evidence against the current front office?

Let me give you the cliff notes from the Waddell spin, save you the rush down there tonight:

  1. We’re going to make our first priority a coach.

  2. We’re going to sign a #1 center.

  3. We’re going to sign 2 defensemen

  4. We’re announcing the following super special season ticket holder benefits such as in game seat upgrades to move down low, assorted giveaways, 2-1 Manilow tix!

  5. We have some up and coming promising youngsters, you just wait!

  6. If you all buy that I can accomplish that, I have some nice oceanfront property in Montana to sell you

What makes anyone think that having a high draft pick is a plus with Waddell’s recent run?

By Brendan

March 7, 2008 5:00 PM | Link to this

While I don’t the Thrashers to lose, every point we amass is hurting our “weighted percentage chance” of winning a high pick in the lottery draft.

Since we’re talking about bringing in top talent, at this point, the best way to do that is to draft it. Free Agents won’t come to Atlanta until such time as Atlanta is a “Cup contender.” Atlanta will have to rely on its farm system and players like Little, Sterling, Valabik, Oystrick, Grant Lewis, Colin Stuart, and Ondrej Pavelec, to make the leap up to the pros, and contribute once they get here. No one should expect any “miracles” here. Tanking again next year will allow the franchise to get a shot at Taveres.

Chew on this folks, imagine Tavares and Stampkos playing with Kovy and Kozlov? We’d be a lot better. And the future would actually look fairly bright. Even if it’s Doughty (a blueliner) and Tavares, that’s still acquiring good, young Canadian talent for the future. But, we’ll need “luck” along the way. We could wind up drafting 5th. And Lord knows who we’d get there.

I’m with you, Rawhide. I just can’t cheer for the Thrashers to lose. I can cheer for others to lose, and I can be complacent when they lose (now), but cheering for them to intentionally lose just so they can get a good draft pick isn’t ethical. Besides, if the Kings and Nings are tanking , too, to get a top draft pick, we’ll lose that effort , too. How bad would it be to lose at losing?!?

Amens please…..

Bow your heads, hands joined on the keyboards

Oh Heavenly Father, thank you for listening to our prayers and for the blessings you have bestowed upon the Thrashers. Please use your loving grace to guide this team in a positive direction; strengthening their leadership, defensive skills and teamwork. Please empower the Thrashers to fight for a win in regulation tonight, be agressive, defend our net and kick the Wild’s a$$! AMEN!!!

Manley: I hope the Thrashers put your blog on their dressing room bulletin board tonight.

I have tickets to tonight’s game and am passing. What does that say?

However, we have renewed our season tickets. Poor NHL hockey is better than no NHL hockey. I think this is why we see so many “opponent” or “some other team” jerseys at games. They come to see the stars, not necessarily the home team.

I like the Wild,…but I’d give anything for the home team to beat them.

Go Blue,..give us a reason to believe (e.g. renew).

Tonight: Win one for Manley and for all the Manleys listen or watching on the Armed Forces Network!

I, as a Tank-it proponent, don’t want us to lose them all. I don’t think the Thrash can ‘catch’ the Bolts or Kings in going for low, I just want to maintain the current position of 28th entering the draft lottery.

What, O Hockey Sages, can be done about the following debacle of a situation?

Thrashers need a real farm club

Until the organization gets a real developmental relationship formed with an AHL club, the Thrashers will forever be at a serious disadvantage in developing our prospects. Furthermore, why would any top GM or coach ever agree to hire into such a losing situation?

It’s still 1-0 Minnehaha after 2!

Outshot 27-13! That sucks!

I like the Kozlov—Holik—Thorburn line, but I wanna try: Boulton—Holik—Thorburn.

For this to take place, I would send Larsen to Chicago, and call up either Haydar or Desbiens to play RW on Kovy’s line, with Little at Center.

Recchi would move to the 4th line with Slater and Kozlov.

Kovalchuk—Little—Haydar/Desbiens

Perrin—Christensen—Armstrong

Boulton—Holik—Thorburn

Kozlov—Slater—Recchi

I remember how well Slater worked with another veteran, Scott Mellanby. I think Slater would work well with Recchi.

Kracker, that’s the best point I’ve ever seen on this forum! I heard about that situation with the Chicago Wolves a while back and the importance of it cannot be stated enough. I don’t entirely blame the Thrashers for it, but they certainly have an equal share of the blame. I blame the Blackhawks and the Wirtz family ownership as much as anyone for losing control of the Chicago hockey market, the Wolves are simply trying to carve out their market share. The Thrashers, as far as I’ve heard, have been searching for a new AHL affiliate for quite some time, but they aren’t available on demand, circumstances have to play out just right to get a new AHL affiliate. That’s a huge reason why so few draft prospects make it through to the big league club. Unless they’re a draft pick that skips the AHL entirely (like Kovy, Heatley, Exelby or Enstrom), or only plays there during the lockout like Lehtonen, then the Wolves are a dead end for quality draft picks. So what looks like shoddy drafting by Waddell (which it may or may not be, we’ll never know), may actually be an indifferent farm team. When I first heard about this situation, I thought it was the single biggest problem in the entire Thrashers organization, I’m glad it’s finally been brought to the forefront.

STH MEETING NEWS FLASH

This is raw data coming in via phone text form my source…so it may be rough & need clarifying later…

According to my contact in the STH Townhall Meeting the following was discussed:

  1. DW said he will NOT be coach next season…well…DUH

  2. Don said “He knows there’s a problem on defense”….again…DUH

  3. BL said he never “refused Don anything”. Whatever that means

  4. BL said there will be a “quality product on ice” next year I presume

  5. DW said only quality players on D at deadline would have only been a rental & did not wish to mortgage future again….I can understand that…but doesn’t that also sound like he admits he can’t resign a qualiy UFA?

  6. DW said that leadership was something that was missing this year… I’m going to wear out my DUH button

  7. BL indicated that the choice was made to keep DW behind bench due to fact they felt no quality coach was out there and they did not want to bring up Anderson at this time.

  8. BL was asked what his biggest regret was…he said not telling DW “no” when asked to stay behind the bench…..DUH button now broken

  9. BL indicates that new coach would probably come from AHL read between those lines

If you were there and read this…please confirm or correct.

If Don is still a GM next season, I will be shocked. If what Levenson is saying about Don’s requests is The Truth™, then this means Don was never “handcuffed by the owners” and it seems the buck stops at Waddell, not at the owners.

However, Levenson’s decision to keep Waddell behind the bench instead of bringing Anderson up to coach was a very bad idea. It’s as if Levenson actually thought AHL-Chicago was there to help develop our players. It’s not. It’s there to develop their players. Our players don’t play often unless they’re good and productive in their system.

Maybe Levenson has learned his lesson, regarding the coaching change. I’m willing to give the ASG more time, but I think for Waddell, an eleventh hour attempt to talk his way out of this debacle is too little, way too late.

Rawhide, thanks for that update. So, I take it Waddell didn’t resign and BL didn’t announce his firing either. And really, that’s what the STHs went there to find out.

Halfway throught the 3rd period, Minnesota 1, Atlanta 0. One Minnesota announced, “Thrashers hangin’ tough in this one.” The other Minnesota announcer countered, “Hanging tough? More like ‘hanging around.’ They’ve been outhit, outhustled, outshot, and outchanced. The Wild have let them hang around by not cashing in on chances. And, as a result, the Thrashers are one shot away from tying this game.”

Rawhide, I want to ask you, and ALL MY FELLOW BLOGGERS, what do you guys think about this as the “new” measuring stick for the future? I’d say … we’re pretty much in the same boat as Tampa Bay. That is, a team that’s been or is being dismantled. I think the losses of Prospal and Brad Richards qualifies in that regard for the Bolts. Both teams are headed towards the lottery draft this year. So, can we say it’s “fair” to compare ourselves vs. Tampa Bay as a the “litmus” test for the next three years? And let’s see which franchise wins by 2011.

Oddly enough, we’ve seen this before. In 2001, the Tampa Bay Lightning finished DEAD LAST in the league, with Atlanta just above them. The “hockey gods” tossed us a bone in the lottery draft, as Atlanta won the 1st overall selection, and took Ilya Kovalchuk.

Since then (2001), what happened? Well, in Atlanta’s case, it experienced a steady flow of INCREMENTAL PROGRESS, that ultimately resulted in one playoff berth and no playoff wins. In the case of Tampa Bay, it resulted in playoff berths in 2003, 2004, 2006, and 2007. In 2003, the Bolts advanced to the second round, but lost to eventual Cup winners, the New Jersey Devils. In 2006 and 2007, Tampa Bay lost in the opening round. And, of course, in 2004, the Lightning won the Stanley Cup.

It’s pretty clear which franchise won the last time both were in the same boat. How do you like our chances to beat them this time around?

2-1 Wild, Minnesota PPG, with just over 2:00 left in regulation. Colby Armstrong got the Thrashers goal.

To all who say Moose should go and Lehts should stay, just look at tonight. Moose faces 39 shots, only gives up 2 goals, has enough gas to win a SO, and shows enough fire to get a 10 minute misconduct. That shows me alot. But as if that’s not enough, think about this. Pavalic will come up next year. Who do you want mentoring this young stud? A proven vet who can help him and seems to have no problem being a solid backup? Or a young headcase with little self confidence that would not want share time on the ice, and might even try to sabotage any chance to make Pavalic the starter? Add that to the fact that we could maybe get something for Lehts, and would get nothing for Moose. I’d just as soon have Moose back next year. That is if he would even want to stay. Just my opinion.

You’ll know when the case is settled. The ASG owns both the Thrash and the Hawks, so you know any court decision will be on the front page of the sports page…

… Because of the Hawks, of course. Gah, I was so disturbed to flip through the sports page today in search of NHL news, only to find anything NHL on the back damn page. Even Gymnastics news made it before hockey. Whoever made that decision needs to be smacked.

rawhide town meeting update.

A few things i found of interest.

First, DW thinks we need two top 4 defensemen. Not that i disagree but that certainly points toward offseason stuff.

2nd. The extra player in the hossa deal was going to be Dupuis or Perrin. They talked to Dupuis the week before the deadline and apparently Dupuis has “dulisions of grandur” (my words for thinks he is a top 6 player) that is why he moved.

3rd. Levenson thinks are tickets are cheap. Overall, that maybe. But he obviously hasn’t look at lower bowl vs elsewhere in the league.

4th. we were in the market for campbell up until that move went down, but we “weren’t willing to match the steep price.”

To me the most frustrating thing was the length of then answers. They wanted to stall as long as possible for each question. The STH stuff was what I expected. But I apprecaited the tough questions.

Finally a win. Go Thrash.

TNT, wouldn’t having all three, maybe, be the best situation? With one goalie sitting up in the pressbox each night?

I like Hedberg, too. I argued with Ranallo that he had decent “rental” value. Bygones. I can’t and won’t begrudge Hedberg his right to do what’s best for him. He’ll probably get a 2-3 year contract to be the backup for another team.

But as for Lehtonen, TNT, imagine the media reaction to yet another of Atlanta’s “highly prized lottery draft picks” flying the coop? Think about it. Stefan, Heatley, then Lehtonen?? In addition Coburn, an 8th overall pick, also leaving the organization. And then, there’s the potential of replicating this year we had with Hossa, in 2009-10, with Kovalchuk’s pending unrestricted free agency. And if Kovalchuk leaves, that would be the LAST of the “building blocks” that were to have sustained us through our infancy and into Stanley Cup contendership. It would look “horrible.” Plus, we still don’t know what Lehtonen could become. Really, truly. We don’t. Give him a decent blueline, and his numbers will get better.

I have nothing but man-love for Johan Christian Hedberg. If you ask me, he should be our next head coach and back-up goaltender. He’ll know when Kari needs a rest and insert himself when the team is ready for a “jolt”…a shot in the arm if you will. Obviously, I like to engage in hyperbole, but whoso would be a man would be a Moose admirer…he is the consummate professional and about as clutch as a 5’10” “midget” can be in the NHL these days. And to think the NHL wants goalie equipment to be even smaller!! Moose could stop 35 shots in his underwears…what incredible reflexes! MOOOOOOOOOOOSE!!!!!!!!

Smoothie, I second the love for Moose. I hate to think of him gone after this year. Kovy (1st star) thanked the fans and said “we really need you”. Personally that meant a lot to me since I was on the fence about going to the game tonight. The sellout enthusiastic crowd was an unexpected surprise.

BG33Brown - Thanks!!! I would like to think that Campbell is still in their scopes this summer. If DW is really committed to getting quality blueliners this summer, he’s a good one to start with.

Also, interesting comment regarding Dupuis.

David - Keep pokin’ your head in here and Craig’s blog. The people will let ya know when there is news regarding that situation.

TNT - That would be a ballsy move…I guess it would echo Brendan’s remarks regarding the reaction.

Eileen — too bad Kovy is one of the few who has a passion for making this team better. If Moose is the coach, then Kovy damn well better be the captain…lead by example and the rest will follow.

BTW, if Levenson was that much of an arrogant jerk, then we are in much more trouble than I thought. Perhaps DWad is at his wit’s end and will resign his post thus freeing himself from the clusterf&*k albatross around his neck!

Keeping three would be good, but I can’t see Lehts enjoying it. He seems to pout when he doesn’t get the start, like he thinks the Coach has no confidence in him. And as good as Pav is, who wants to see him sit alot? The games I saw him in earlier when Kari was hurt, he needs to be a starter somewhere. I don’t really have anything against Kari. I know as bad as the D was this year, alot of goals weren’t his fault. He just doesn’t seem to keep it together when things go bad, which they did alot this year. Maybe another year of maturity will help, and some D help will come in the off season.

PJ, during the town hall meeting, Waddell mentioned that the doctors originally said Kovy’s injury would take ~4 weeks to heal, but that he was back on the ice after 2 games off b/c (and I’m paraphrasing here) that’s just the kind of stud that Kovy is. I don’t think he’s 100% yet, for what it’s worth. But I couldn’t tell if he was still wearing a brace.

RStroz, yes, Levenson seemed like a jerk. Him basically telling that couple who went to the Bruins game that they were either too stupid to be able to read the ticket price or they were liars was not impressive. Note to those not there, he didn’t say they were stupid or liars, that was just the implication.

Tankland proponents, tonight’s game exemplifies why I can’t join your ranks. I go to hockey games because I love that rush we get with 2 minutes on the clock and a chance to win or squeeze into overtime. I love seeing them fight and hustle for the puck. That excitement, that sense of community with an arena full of people who all have the same goal as you, that euphoria when the puck goes in… it can’t be beat.

And, on top of that, there is a part of me that can’t stomach the thought of a bunch of guys that get paid more per game than I do per 6 months should get the chance to coast (even more than the sometimes do).

But mostly, it’s about the stadium high :-)

Rawhide to clarify:”BL said he never “refused Don anything”. Whatever that means

I went to the meeting tonight and asked the first question from the audience. I was originally going to ask Wadell why he chose to tell the fans/media at the beginning of the season that the 6 million in free cap space would give the team the “flexibility” to make improvements to the team before or at the trade deadline—and why after saying this he spent none of the available money to help a struggling team. I figured he would give some BS answer about how there were no players available that were a good fit for the club. Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised when that weasel Levinson showed up and I was able to alter the question and address it to both of them. It was something like this:

“At the beggining of the year the team was 6 million under the cap and we were told that money would be used to improve the club before or after the trade deadline. Was it an ownership decison or a GM decision not to use this available cap space to improve the team?” I wanted to paint them into a corner in hopes of getting a straight answer. I honestly don’t think they knew how to answer this question, nor were they prepared for it. BL looked to DW, and DW looked to BL. After dancing around the question for about five minutes, the closest thing to an answer was BL saying that the owners never denied DW any requests. This looked like it might have been a touchy subject between the two of them. After all, DW couldn’t exactly sell out his boss and say it was the ASG’s fault he could not spend the money needed to help the club. And Levinson said they never denied him requests, but maybe DW was told he couldn’t spend money so why would he make requests to do so?

It is a lot of speculation on my part, but by not answering the question that has been burning me up for days, that is all I can do. Sorry for the long post.

Lehtonen doesn’t have the “luxury” of enjoying it. He’s just got to do it. If it he elevates his game, he’ll get the vast majority of the starts. And if KL even wants to be a $7 million-a-year type goaltender, he’s got to make his move soon. He was drafted in 2002!

I doubt an RFA offer sheet would be much more than HALF that figure, if there were one offered. At this point, I can’t envision what’s holding up Kari’s contract negotiation? I mean, price goes only one way from here: Up! I know DWad’s policy is to not negotiate during the season. But, clearly, he did that for Hossa. For a supposedly “cash-strapped” organ-I-zation, I can’t understand why they would even consider letting another team jack up the price on Lehtonen, or subject him to an RFA offer sheet, when he can probably be re-signed rather cheaply right now.

By the way, Moose Hedberg has more wins than Kari this year. I repeat, this is an optimum to go re-sign Kari. What about re-signing Moose? Well, if you were Moose, why wouldn’t you want to test the waters? You’re probably going to be about to cite a 15-win season. There will be a lot of teams calling his agent this Summer. And who knows, Moose might want OUTTA here, anyway.

j nes - I don’t know what else you’d propose. It’s not like we have an abundance of large D-men who would be better suited to camp out in front of our own net, knock people off the puck and/or block shots. It would also give the fans in Atlanta a good look at Valabik against NHL’ers at the height of the homestretch. So many people here only know what they’ve heard. Valabik has come a very long way over the past year. If he’s not on the team next season, he’ll definitely make the 09-10 squad… barring any unforeseen issues, of course. But that goes for anyone.

j nes, thank you. That was an awesome question and a wonderfully-shared post. Good job! I suspect you nailed when you said, And Levenson said they never denied him requests, but maybe DW was told he couldn’t spend money, so why would he make requests to do so? Bingo.

Ya know, a child can ask his parents if he or she can have a can of frosting for dinner. But, it’s pretty clear the answer will be “no.” And that the request will be met with scorn and hostility. So the question isn’t asked.

Just once, I wish Don Waddell would say, “I wonder if Lou Lamoriello ever has these kinds of discussions with the Devils organization?” I wonder what possibly drives Don Waddell to WANT to remain the GM of this team? Everyone you can think of … blames HIM for everything. And well, yes. He is responsible for a good bit of it. Even Waddell’s dog looks at him with that, “Can’t believe you signed Byron Dafoe and Steve Shields” look on his face. And yet, he won’t resign. He won’t stand up and say, “I’ve had enough! I’m mad as H#LL. And I’m not going to take this anymore!!” Nope. He plugs along, merrily. Perhaps thinking that things are really “okay,” and only needing a “tweak” here and there. That’s really troubling, if true. For the ASG completely and utterly RELIES on his judgement for all roster matters.

This is the blind leading the naked to the fashion show … where the Emperor will be modeling his “new clothes.”

Ladies and Gentlemen, I think you are missing something very important in the tank it camp: we ARE fans and are still stoked when we win.

David here is a pretty good link about the lawsuit The gist of it was that the Hawks made a trade for Joe Johnson that owner Steve Belkin objected too. He was then kicked out of the group and he took it to court. A Maryland judge ruled that Belkin had the right to buy out his partners and they are currently challenging the ruling. The current impasse is going on a year and a half I think.

j nes - Thanks you throwing a hard fastball on the first pitch. It sounds like BL and DW were taken off guard.

A few concerns have already surfaced from my perspective:

1) we were in the market for campbell up until that move went down, but we “weren’t willing to match the steep price.”

Could this also be foreshadowing going into free agency this summer? I’m afraid I can hear it now, “We didn’t sign any big name defenseman because the price was too steep. We did however pick up a couple of defenseman with great potential.”

2) Who is going to be Kovy’s center next year? Instead of looking for a top tier center for Kovy, DW is looking for a winger. So, is White going to remain as Kovy’s center or does Little get a longer look at that slot?

3) Since the Thrashers already have 5 defensemen under contract for next season, Valabik may be brought up, and DW stated that the organization was targeting two more defensemen, which defensemen under contract are going to get dumped(Zhitnik sounds like a good name)? What happens to Popovic?

Stroz — “The price was too steep” meant he wasn’t willing to make ANOTHER Zhitnik move. Buffalo wanted Pavelec AND a first round pick, he didn’t feel it was worth it for a player who obviously wants to test Free Agency. Honestly, I’m glad he didn’t make that trade…a deadline acquisition really wouldn’t have helped the team.

BG33Brown — I was at the game, and moaned about Kwiatkowski hooking the guy at the blueline. Everyone around me didn’t understand why i was moaning, and when the replay was shown they skipped the penalty and showed the second before he knocked the player down. If you were at the game I can understand why you would think it was a bad call, but from where I was sitting (204, behind the goal) it was a pretty obvious hook in my opinion. But that’s what I saw live, it could’ve been way off on TV with the benefit of instant replay.

Nothing compares to the no-call last game. That was ridiculous.

Brendan I think it comes dwn to the fact that Don loves this team. It’s his baby in every sense of the word. He was here at it’s conception, brought it into the world, helped it grow up and watched it grow up. I doubt he wants to leave it. In all seriousness, no matter how much anyone might think Waddell blows as a GM and how much of this is his fault, there can be no question that he is committed to this team. That doesn’t guarantee correct decision-making 100% of the time, but it counts for a lot too. He wants this team to be successful.

And on a complete side note, I just looked out the window and saw snowflurries - cool!

Anyway…this team is at a MAJOR crossroads this summer. Regardless of what does or does not happen with the GM position, they have to hire a new coach, attempt to upgrade our d x2 (by their own admission) which isn’t going to be easy because I’m not sure who would want to come play here. There’s the draft to consider as well and I think a lot will hinge on how our first pick falls. Obviously, if we somehow miraculously secured the top overall pick, our search for a number one center is over. If not…there are some seriously good defensemen. If we luck out with another Enstrom, we may only need to pick up one big UFA on D. Who knows.

I guess in a few months, we all will.

My concern is that we hear this same line in the summer as an excuse for not procuring any top tier defensemen in the free agent market.

That’s why I’m waiting until after July 1 to decide whether to renew my ticket package. In other words, I don’t trust the owners/GM to follow thru with their statements until the rubber meets the road..

David It means neither. The owners have the right to sell after the lawsuit is settled. If ASG wins, they will need everyone to sell their shares (I’m pretty sure) in order to meet league approval. On the other hand, I find it hard to believe Belkin (if he wins) would turn around and sell something he spent two years acquiring.
It would be sweet if they sold to a single local guy/family.

Ranallo - Great link. From what has been posted here and what is in that write up, it sure sounds like Levenson came off un-good…and, to that point, Don came off a lot better. It at least sounds as if he was concerned with the situation and sensitive to the STH ire.

They talked to Dupuis the week before the deadline and apparently Dupuis has “dulisions of grandur” (my words for thinks he is a top 6 player) that is why he moved.

Yeah. No joke. His interviews just prior to that made it pretty clear that he thought he was worth more than he is. And what exactly is the worth of a fast-skating, chance-making, non-scoring, 2nd-line-but-thinks-he’s 1st winger? Arguably less than a fast-skating, 2nd-line-and-glad-to-be-in-the-big-leagues, team-playing, scoring-as-much-as-the-other-guy winger. At least for Atlanta. My husband and I argued nonstop about Dupuis until he got traded, because it was my position that Dupuis needed one-on-one work to work on his hands of stone and my husband’s contention that that isn’t the role of team practices. But I can’t say I’m sorry to see him go, especially if it was Perrin vs. Dupuis. Perrin has been very consistent this season. He plays to his abilities (which are 2nd line, center or wing), sets up his teammates for success, and hustles. Every single game.

Can someone tell me what happened with the final game misconduct? Unfortunately I only saw highlights.

Also, I keep hearing that the team has given up, but I don’t see that when I actually watch the team. The Carolina game was a pretty low point — both of the goalies looked spiritually spent, and some members of the team were playing with less dedication than I would have liked to have seen. But…I don’t think that’s at all true overall.

Nikita - on Minnesota’s goal in the third, Moose felt he was interfered with by a Wild player in the blue paint. He was obviously screened but replay showed the player just had a good position.

Moose blasted the official…and thus got a 10 minute misconduct.

To Moose’s credit, after the OT period, he sought the official out and made nice with him. I think he just lost his cool after playing so darn well, but it seemed as though that goal was going to be the one to beat us.

Sorry, but if what was said was true, renting Brian Campbell for 2 months when the playoffs were NEVER a guarantee would not in a million years have been worth Pavs and a 1st in THIS draft (or next years for that matter). No issues on not pulling the trigger there. I also believe there was some validity to what DW said about Dmen just not being available this year. Maybe we could have gotten a Bryce Salvador type, but to what extent would that have helped long term? And do you really want to give up on a Sterling or similar prospect (which is what it would have cost) when we’ve all seen how the Coburn thing played out.

Having seen all the write ups on Chicago, I am more convinced this is the root of the issue. I can recall getting really excited that they were doing so well thinking that it would lead to more success for the Thrashers, but clearly, the independant agenda is not what we need at this point. While I am not opposed to JA taking over as head coach, we need a better flow of communication between those who develop the prospects and those who need the prospects to fill holes on the big club. It grieves me to see players like DiPenta, Foster, Coburn, etc. playing key roles on other clubs because they had staff to identify talents and plug them into a system that made the most out of them, as opposed to just calling them up and expecing results when obviously one hand is not shaking the other in this case.
