Comeback Effort Wiped Away in OT
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Thursday night’s massive comeback effort by the Atlanta Thrashers came up just short as the Islanders flushed out a goal 1:09 into the extra period. Failing to squeeze out the extra point has Thrashers fans seeing any remote chances of post-season play circling the drain.
New York began the game by piling up a 3-0 lead as Atlanta strained to find any rhythm to their game. But a short-handed penalty shot goal by Eric Perrin was followed by slappers off the sticks of Ken Klee, (his first of the season), and Alexei Zhitnik. The three-goal run silenced the groans from the stands.
Ilya Kovalchuk showed a great amount of grit in his play as twice he smeared Islanders against the boards Bergenheim in the second and Hilbert in the third.
The Thrashers again found themselves behind the Islanders late in the game until Bobby Holik leveled the score again with just 71 seconds left in the final period.
But ultimately it was Trent Hunter’s goal that allowed the New Yorkers to sneak out the back door with the all-important point number two.
Whew thank goodness we don’t play the Islanders anymore this year. I don’t know if I could push out another one of those.
Un-Good Numbers
The Thrashers are mired in a five game losing streak. They have been out scored 22-10 in those games. Turn the clock back to last fall when they lost the first five games of the season by a combined score of 23-9. As you’ll recall, they went on to drop the next game 4-0 in Philadelphia and Bob Hartley lost his job the next day.
With 1:21 left in the third period of the game played against Washington 16 days and 7 games ago, Alexander Ovechkin scored a goal to tie the game at 2 each. The Thrashers went on to win that game in a shootout. However, since that time Atlanta has played 372 minutes and 30 seconds of hockey in which they have held a lead for exactly 11 minutes and 39 seconds.
Also, since the 5-1 win in Detroit on Jan. 15, the Thrashers have won exactly two games in regulation.
At The Fork In The Road
The great Yankee catcher and malapropist Yogi Berra once said, “When you see a fork in the road, take it”. Well, the Thrashers find themselves at just such a fork. Do they forge on with the intention of pushing for a playoff birth or do they take the fork, stick it in the ’07-’08 NHL campaign and set their sights on the future?
If they decide upon the latter, and they should, then I would like to see more of Little, Stuart, Kiwi and Pops in the line up to play along side of newbies Armstrong and Christensen.
If they opt for the former, then here is what they are facing assuming 90 points is still the benchmark to win the Southeast crown and make the playoffs.
To reach that total the Thrashers would need to earn 27 points in their last 17 games, say going 13-3-1. But then, Carolina would then have to go no better than 9-6 to finish at 89 points and Washington would have to finish out 11-6-1 in their last 18 to end up with 89 and Florida 12-3-1 to end at 89 points ..Tampa Bay would have to go 16-2-1 to get to 90 points.
Again, this is all predicated on the fact that Atlanta wins thirteen of their last seventeen games in the first pace and that’s a pretty tall order. One could say the Thrashers are “overwhelming underdogs”.
While it’s true, “It ain’t over until it’s over”, considering just last week we were in a position to be one off the lead with 20 to go, well, “the future ain’t what it used to be”.
If You Want It Done Right Do It Yourself
Since it is now abundantly clear that the Thrashers Organ-I-zation isn’t going to place a full-time head coach behind the bench any time soon, I have placed it upon myself to take this matter into my own hands!
My fellow Bluelanders, I present to you the unofficial, honorary Thrashers head coach for the remainder of the season as named by Rawhide’s Ice Man blog .Coach Jim Mora.
And Finally
A big, fat, hairy THANK YOU to Maal who fed me some stats while my internet service was out last night. Maal, you are the best-est-est!

considering we play all the teams in our division multiple times it might be more manageable than you think. as well they will be beating each other up. question is can we even beat them at this point.

13 Games must win. Possible? Impossible? Who knows? It has to be done. At this time no more talking that we play two games back to back. Who cares, Ladies? Just Push, B***! Bring it ON. Or you are going to Hear BOOOOOO every Home game. I am not happy with Kiwi and Stuart. They did not impress me much. Little looked good last game, but 3-d line is not plase to him. He is attack forward. Well, Fly to Boston and bring 2 points, Ladies. THis is yor job and this what we pay for you. Shake it! :-)

Some general thoughts on what I saw at the game last night…
The Thrashers have a good degree of success when their defensemen jump into the rush (e.g. goals by Klee and Zhit). However, the forwards also have to be defensively responsible in their own zone. Vasicek and Hunter’s (OT) goal were both the result of blown assignments by the forward that should have been covering the high slot when the defensemen vacated the middle to go into the corner to get/play the puck.
The Thrashers do better when they play a physical game. When they start to take the body, whether it is finishing their checks or tying up people after they’ve made their play, the Thrashers then can use their speed to force turnovers. That, and it really gets the crowd into it, which in turn seems to help motivate the players.
Speaking of turnovers, they HAVE to stop. I think I saw the official stat was 15 last night?!?!
I agree with your “latter” option above, RH and it is time to use the rest of the season to begin the youth movement.

Armstrong did look a big lanky. I like him though, he’ll be a decent third line guy for us. His skating is really funky though, one of the Pens fans told us he skates like an eel, and I thought WTF does that mean, but I noticed it last night, he kind of glides like a eel, must be cause he’s lanky like that.
Good comeback in the 2nd, but as usual with this club it’s the Jekyll-Hyde act from period to period and our woeful D caught up with us once again.

Unfortunately both forks in the road lead to the same brick wall. I’ll give five dollars to anyone that can keep possession of the puck anywhere on the ice. Can anyone tell my why Kari and Moose always have to play an outstanding game for us to have a change to win? I would like to watch a game with the defense keeping the puck out of or zone and the offense keeping the puck in their zone. Is that too much to ask for in the “New NHL”?

It’s true, I am full of awesome! :-D Could Kari have been any more dejected in that post-game? If this keeps up, I will not be surprised to see him entertaining offers from other teams. At this rate, it’s going to take a friggin’ fortune to re-sign him. :(

I assumed that we were auditioning players for next year, which is why Kiwi and Little are in the lineup.
Pucksdeep, I thought that Armstrong was wearing a Holik jersey. That boy needs some southern cooking to put some meat on his bones.
I would like to point out to everyone that we are committed for $25.8 mil in salary for next year. Kari is an RFA and does not count in that, but apparently Pavelic does. We have 10 forwards and 5 d-men under contract. So, I’m thinking we have around $15 mil for free agents.

Definitely stick a fork in em! Even if they miraculously do make the playoffs…they’re not going anywhere. This is the perfect opportunity to possibly add another top 3 pick through the draft. Operation Believe in Tankland was underway last night. I can’t say I was rooting for us to lose, but I wasn’t disappointed when we fell behind 3-0. It was exciting to see us come back and tie it at 3, and I was cheering. So I guess it’s kind of a half a*******ed anti-rooting effort. Turth be told, i was hoping for the fairy tail ending of having Crusher get the game winner in the shootout in his debut. But it was not to be.
But we’re still in line for the #3 best shot at Stamkos!!!

When Christansen stepped onto the ice I had a slight moment of horror. I thought he was Patty Stefan and screamed. I can’t believe we scored 2 goals from the blue-line tonight. That brings our season count to a whopping…11, ouch.I hope we keep auditioning Wolves for next season. Can’t wait to see if Lavalee and Valbik get a chance up here before the end of the season.

If DWad insists on playing Alexi Zhitnik, then please, please, please convert him into a forward. He can’t be any worse than Eric Boulton or Thorburn. I was actually impressed with his desire for contact last night and it was good seeing him jump into the play more often. However, I’d rather bench Exelby, move AZ to forward over Charmin, play Mac & Kiwi on the 3rd pair while Klee and Pops play 2nd pair.
Kovy — Crusher — Zhitnik (yes AZ!)
Perrin — White — Armstrong
Kozzie — Holik — Little (I really liked the way this line played last night…I think Little is good for Kozzie…even Slava wanted to fight)
Boulton — Slater — Recchi (still let him play first line PP mins)
Weird, I know, but what the hell? Defense can’t get any worse and Zhitnik’s talent, what little there is left, is being wasted.

Southside, yes, they are.
Zhit really p** me off. So does X. Zhit is completely capable of being an amazing, beautiful, masterful player. But he isn’t, because his attitude sucks. Usually he isn’t where he should be, he’s sauntering about, and he’s drawing stupid penalties that get our opponents points. Exelby’s attitude is great, but he’s not very smart, he’s hit-hungry, and he usually wanders off to leave the opponents to waltz right up to the goal.
I don’t feel that way about anyone else on D. The others occasionally make stupid mistakes, but they really don’t display the consistent low standards of those two. And for that reason I’d like to see both scratched/sent down/reconditioned/whatever/not anywhere near the ice at crunch time.
What’s up with the 4th-line hatred? Boults/Slater/Thorburn are really putting forth a lot of energy lately, and keeping their simmering rage (well, Boulton’s) in check.
In general, I think the team’s main problem is coaching and coordination — they still don’t know each other, they create opportunities for goals on the change and interceptions, and too often they have too little energy. Last night wasn’t a terrible effort, but it was sloppy and uncoordinated, and I hope it hints at a new philosophy to come that will be coupled with smarter play.

Boulton — Slater — Recchi (still let him play first line PP mins)
And moving Recchi to the fourth line is supposed to help? I get what you’re trying to say, but if I want to make Zhitnik a forward, HE goes on the fourth line. Recchi has earned his position on the top line.

Nikita - I’m not sure I like any of our defenders. Except, of course, Enström and Havelid. Those two get on real well together, though Havelid has been making a few sloppy mistakes lately.
The rest of our defensive corps needs to be waived, bought out, something, anything. They are not defensively minded. Hell, they’re not anything minded… and it shows. Oh, dear Gods does it show. If our offense is shut down the opposition is guaranteed a huge win over us, with our D corps the way it is.

Good point, Alan…and anything I say should have “assuming we get a D upgrade” attached to it. Havelid and Enstrom are pretty darned good — the rest of the D is pretty weak. So when I call out X and Zhit, I’m just calling out the most egregious of a slew of poor players.

I understand completely, Nikita. I guess when I see X and Zhitty Zhitnik being called out, I feel there’s room to call everyone else out as well.
Havelid, on the other hand, is currently 5th in the NHL in blocked shots, with 149 of those (according to NHL.com’s player bio on Havelid). Can you imagine how good this team would be if everyone played like that?
People blame Lehtonen and Moose for some of the goals. Those people say Lehtonen and Moose let in soft goals, and criticize the goaltending (As an aside, I wonder exactly how those people define “soft goals” since I hear them whining about it all the damn time). These people forget that goalies are the last line of defense … or in Atlanta’s case, the only line of defense, when it comes to our D corps.
So when you all fire away on the defensemen, feel free to fire away on all of them who stink. It’ll make you feel good to do it, and me feel good to read it. And hopefully, Waddell is aware of how bad our defensive corps is and will DO WHAT IT TAKES in the offseason to get us what we need. If he’s still employed at the end of this season, mind you.

While I would agree our D is pretty inconsistent, D is a team game and our forwards need to work harder. When the D steps up to challenge folks in the corners, the a forward needs to clear the lane.
When we get in trouble in our end and no one challenges, then the other team cycles for a long period of time causing us to either stand around and watch or aimless chase.
We need are D and others to pressure the puck and not sit back in fear that our forwards are standing at the red line waiting for an outlet pass.

Alan — I don’t disagree with you. In fact, in my initial brainstorm, I simply forgot about Recchi (don’t know how) and then just stuck him on the 4th line so he’d be fresh to play lots of PP mins. I do think his age makes him less effective as a 1st liner since he can’t sustain the type of energy he wants to exert for 20+ mins.
But he would certainly be a better checking line player with some scoring potential rather than putting Charmin down there. I’m fine with trading Charmin for a 2nd pair defencement and moving Perrin back to center Rex and Army. What a fierce line that would be!

ThrasherRyan, that’s what I’ve been saying all along. Lock up Lehtonen. It should have been done just after the All-Star game, at the end of January. Guys like Phaneuf and Lundqvist were getting contracts at that time, too. Price only goes one direction from here!! Can you guess which way???
See, this is why RAWHIDE was right and I was wrrr … I was wrrrr … I was LESS CORRECT than usual. I admit it. Don Waddell should have hired a coach. I didn’t think so. But had he done that, he could have locked up Kari, and maybe had more time to move Recchi, Holik, and Hedberg at the trade deadline. Instead, we were left holding the bag on some “rentable” players.
I stand behind my REASONING for retaining Waddell for Coach. I just didn’t think the team would be downloading porn at work while boss stood looking on, over their shoulders. I was wrrrrr. Well, I was WRONG. They did. Right under his nose. And Waddell did nothing about it. He didn’t ship the offending parties out of town, whether that be down to the minors, placed on waivers, or traded for a 7th round pick … or the dredded “future considerations.” He didn’t even “call them out” in the media. I was stunned by just how much of a “player’s coach” he became. Bygones.

Brendan—Agreed. Lock up Letemin NOW. Don’t let the RFA sheets appear. I would even try to lock up Recchi for 1 year, $1 million plus incentives.
As for Waddell, like I said before - If this team makes the playoffs, he gets a free pass. Otherwise he should be fired at the end of the season.
Waddell said this team can make the playoffs. Well, prove it.

Howard - Welcome…and very good point. This is a team game and I believe you and FormerIsleFans have discussed correctly the importance of forwards helping out defensivly to help cover.
It’s funny you use the words “aimless chase” in regards to our inability to clear the puck. She-who-must-be-feared-and-obeyed said just that during the game on opening night…opening night!
Drop the shoe - Welcome to you as well, yes indeed it seems as goalies have to have to have a great game in order for us to have a chance. This team has two good ones in the net but when they face 35-40 shots a night that’s the fault of the 5 in front of him.

Probably because Don Waddell doesn’t have to worry about accountability, J(Z). I wouldn’t doubt that he’s just received a 3-year contract. Sounds like a “whole new 3-year plan” is about to be unleashed. It’s 1999, all over again. Which would be ‘fine,’ except that we have the same GM as the ‘the architect.’

Great, another “Plan” from our bumbling GM…Did a bang-up job with his initial “Five-Year Plan” which stretched eight/nine years later, with nary a playoff victory to show for it…
One playoff series—and it was a woeful debacle at that! Yeah, THAT was worth the wait!
One thing on a positive note: I’m glad that Hossa is gone. Never really liked him—I thought we got “Hosed” by the Sens (yet again—a repeating occurrence with our bumbling GM)…Still think we did…Tried to like him, but I don’t think he wanted to be here from day one—it was obvious, right?
Brendan, IF Don Waddell has a THREE YEAR CONTRACT in hand, this franchise is truly doomed to be mere schedule-fodder for the real teams…Money well-spent by the lambs, eh?

Some of the posters have to be smoking or snorting something. We ain’t goin nowhere except toward the basement. Fortunately for us, the Bolts have been dismantled or we’d be there. Caps with their speed, size, and now Huet will win the SE. Sage, the cause for “optimism” is that … The ASG has NOT announced ANY contract extension for Waddell. The “bad news” is … they feel that coaches and manager’s contracts are, quite frankly, none of our business. HA!
Seriously. That’s THEIR stance. Okay. I call the attention of this blog to the Dallas Stars, who fired GM Doug Armstrong in mid-season. So? So, the Stars were faltering. Look at them now? Go ahead, peek at the standings. Back yet?
There’s more. Stay with me. Not only did the Stars fire GM Armstrong, they fired with three years left on his contract. That man gets paid through 2011.
So???????
So, it’s not “too late,” fellas. If you have, INDEED, offered Waddell a 3-year deal. EAT IT. What represents the “greater damage?” (1) Paying Waddell to do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for the next three years or (2) Allowing him to do perhaps irreparable harm for the next DECADE in the next three years?
If you have to “think” longer than 5 seconds, then PT Barnum is right. There really is a “sucker” born every minute.

Brendan - Great point regarding the GM situation in Dallas.
I think you can add to your point what went down in Washinton last Thanksgiving when they made a coaching change.
In both cases, like with the Thrashers when they released Hartley, they made a calculation that a change needed to be made.
The difference with the Caps and Stars is it seems as though those organ-I-zations had some sort of a plan as to what to do AFTER the change.
This was not the case here…unless you figure keeping DW behind the bench to work things out was the “plan”.

J(Z), that is stupid of them because the puck was not in the net by a mile. And if it did just go in the net why cut to a commercial when you can (must) show replays? Although it wouldn’t surprise me with this broadcasting team because in a game earlier this year Elliot said the ref pointed to the goal that the puck was in the net before he waved it off. Anyone who played hockey knows a ref would never do that if he was going to wave it off. Ok, Slater just scored, if Holik doesn’t get an assist for that hit he deserves one. Yes, I said Slater.

Just rewatched, both Eliot & Delecama (sp?) saw and said that there was a penalty shot coming up.
Then after a lovely UPS commercial JP said it wasn’t a clear point to center ice. But they both said before the quick commercial that there was a penalty shot coming up! All I ask is an apology that someone screwed that up! That’s just embarassing!

Okay Russ, I can still see the shoreline … but what’s the tally now? We must win 14 of the next 16 games to get in? The Flyers beat the Islanders 4-1, today, to be alone in 8th place. Isles have 69-points amd Flyers 73. Isles are in 10th spot, I think, with Buffalo in 9th. Boston has 76-points, in 6th spot, I believe.
**Time to play “True or False.” Ready? Put your “thinking caps” on. This is a test and it will be GRADED.
“True or False,” the Atlanta Thrashers knew they’d have to turn it up “big time” after the All-Star break? Answer: True.
“True or False,” the Thrashers knew that if they didn’t head into the trade deadline with 3 wins, that many of them could be sent “packing” in a “firesale?” Answer: True.
“True or False,” the Thrashers have now lost six (6) straight games? Answer: True.
“True or False,” Don Waddell already knew the season was “lost” at the deadline, when, at the most critical juncture, the team was outshot 49-10 in a game vs. their most likely competitor for the 8th and final spot, the NY Islanders, and then proceeded to put forth a “lifeless” effort vs. Carolina and then bottom-feeder Toronto? Answer: True.
“True or False,” If Don Waddell didn’t know the season was “lost” at that point, isn’t that reason #298 to fire him? Answer: TRUE.
“True or False,” the GM left “rentable” players, such as Holik, Recchi, Hedberg, and even Steve McCarthy, on the table? Answer: True.
“True or False,” Don Waddell could re-sign Holik, Recchi, Hedberg, and McCarthy in the offseason, even if he had “rented” them out? Answer: True.
Sorry … it’s no fun to play “True or False” when someone gives you the answers. Mea culpa.

Stendec????? Hello?????
He is awfully quiet. Seems Moose did not fair any better than Kari. I thought Hedberg played well, but using Stendec logic, the 2 regulation goals were definately “marshmallow soft”
I am waiting to hear how today’s game was Kari’s fault. Maybe he is over on Craig’s blog….

Stats - I’ve been waiting all day for the stendec meltdown, myself. I’m sure this is Kari’s fault somehow, though. Maybe Moose was using Kari’s stick, or since Kari was there, some of his mojo rubbed off on Moose?

Okay, I’ll give you a freebie to tease me about. Columbus #61 - Come on, tell me he’s not worthy of a man-crush.
The firewadell site is nicely done. Are you the administrator?

I won’t address the Firewaddell site until it becomes more than just a blog that isn’t maintained.
As for Little, PJ, I’ve been impressed with his play. He’s more suited to be the #1 center, in my opinion. He just needed the extra ice time he wasn’t getting at the beginning of the year.
By Brendan
March 1, 2008 10:02 PM | Link to this
I agree with Alan, Bryan Little deserves more ice time. I’m still not sure why he was sent back to Chicago in the first place? The reason I heard advanced was that … “he didn’t have enough time riding buses and getting a feel for what it’s like in the minors … to fully appreciate being up in the bigs.” Okay. Moving right along.
PJ, “Professor Rawhide” may make you his “official” teacher’s pet, for getting all the answers right. Though, I’d “counter-claim” that you had the answer guide. It’s not EXACTLY cheating, but I’d give you “full credit.” Professor RAWHIDE may be less tolerant than I. And yes, Rick Nash is a fine place, as for having an affinity for a player who isn’t a Thrasher. And just think, PJ, had Waddell told Panthers GM, Rick Dudley, back in 2002, “You make this deal with Columbus and you can KISS BOUWMEESTER GOODBYE … ‘cuz we’re takin’ im with our 2nd overall pick.” Guess what that course of action would have done? As a star pupil, PJ, I expect you’d answer correctly, “It would have sent Dudley back over to Columbus GM MacLean’s table to tell him the ‘deal’ to swap picks, 1st for 3rd, was off the table. And that if MacLean still wanted Rick Nash, he’d have to approach Waddell about ‘inducement’ not to take him, since Columbus picked 3rd and Atlanta picked 2nd, which would have permitted Atlanta to select Rick Nash with that pick, instead of goaltender Kari Lehtonen.” That’s a tremendous response, PJ, as it is the “correct one.”
PJ, I have “absolutely nothing” to do with the FIRE WADDELL site. I am only aware of it because Tom told me that he created it. Now, that’s one passionate and committed fan! Unfortunately, I believe the ASG has “other plans” than those advocated by the website for the next three years of Mr. Waddell’s life.

too bad for Tom he doesn’t own the team
By Tom

Yep, but brother odds me owning the Thrashers would be a blast for all until I ended up broke.
Because as a true and passionate fan I would do everything in my power to put out a winner for the fans without concern for the payroll.
Owners with passion win in this day and age. I have seen our owners seem to calculate how profitable every move is, not whether it will result in the team being successful…
If you disagree with me, look at Todd White. Here is their star Hossa saying I need a top quality center, and they give him Todd White. These guys scream just good enough.
If Waddell came to me with Todd White as the person who would lead me to the promise land, I would b*** slap his a* out the door telling him that I have X amount left to the salary cap and if that is the best he can do then his resignation better be on my desk in the morning.
If Mike Ilitch heard his GM say that Todd White would be the difference maker in the playoffs this year what would you think he would do? My guess, the GM would be reassigned as a dough kneeder at Little Ceasars real quickly.
Yet the ASG think Waddell s%%t does not stink??? Well kids, we all know from Brendans 289 reasons why it is time to firewaddell.com .
We also know that being a winner takes passion from the main office. Or else, passion from the GM position. As the last indictment of Waddell’s lack of passion, could you imagine Lou Lamoriello being told that the best he could do is get Todd White, or Ken Klee, or Steve Rucchin? He would have a s$$t fit right there in the owners suite threatening them with his resignation and that he would tell the world what a bunch of pansy a$$ losers they are.
Either the owners need big brass balls or the GM needs big brass balls. But the mutual admiration society we have in upper management leads to mediocrity and fan apathy.
Waddell to ASG. Guys you are the best. ASG to Waddell… No you are Don.
Fans to both… YOU S$CK!!!

No, Letemin not guilty this time, Moose gave game away. Sitting on A++ when tying goal landed in net behind him. Totally unacceptable! Believe team knew another loss was forthcoming when that puck fluttered in. Sure played like it. More to point. No Thrasher possesses ANY NHL caliber talent. Not a DAMN one of them. Ship them all to Chicago in even exchange for kids. At least fans will see some heart, fire and hustle in final regular season games. Not from these quitters! What about (fill in blank)?. Who cares? Trade ‘em! Cut ‘em! Whatever! They quit on fans. Past time fans quit on them! That includes Letemin AND Ilya “I Wanna Be With Marian” Kolvachuk! Good night (morning). GO FLAMES!

Tom - How is the boy doing??? How old is he?
Regardless, feel free to rant anytime…love the passion.
Stendec - I, too, was wondering where you were…glad you;re back. When Moose…who played well overall…let that first goal slid through his pads, my first thought was, “Well, that was a very ‘Stendecian’ goal he just allowed” :o)
PJ - Hey, how’s my little “teachers pet” this morning?
Brendan - Regardless of what you feel about DW or the ASG…do you really believe that Don will be employed by the organ-I-zation at the time the sun sets on Monday April 7, 2008?
The logical side of “Rawhide” thinks not.
But then again, look at the flap that has been created by our brethren Hawks regarding their GM’s attempts to fire the coach being blocked by the ASG.
Methinks the ASG doesn’t much embrace change.

gameday in and gameday out, you give me more and more reason to believe you’re absolutely nuts …in the un-good sort of way. Kovalchuk becomes more defensively responsible and scores goals, yet you want to trade him along with the entire team.

I’ve seen no comments re the shoot-out player order. Does anybody else question why DW continues to include Kovy within the first 3 shooters? Without looking at the stats, my hunch is that he has a relatively low shoot-out goal %? Also, I would have rather seen Perrin instead of Christensen - I think he’s still nervous about his presence on the team, and can’t handle shoot-out pressure (yet).
By Brendan
March 2, 2008 10:58 AM | Link to this
Thrashernut, I have the feeling Waddell is going to keep switching up the S/O order. Eric Perrin’s move, at this point, is “Well-scouted.” He’s got to “mix it up” like Slava does, or every goalie in the league will know what he’s doing. Christensen probably should be in the “top 3” of our shooters. I have no problem with Kovalchuk shooting 3rd. Kovy does have “several looks” he uses. He’s got a backhand “five hole” move. He’s got the “toe-drag and curl” move … and he can just wind up and SLAP IT! What goalie wants to face that? So, between Perrin, Kovy, Slava, Christensen, and Recchi … I kinda, sorta think he we a decent “shootout squad.” And now that Bryan Little is here, he should shoot some, too.

Tom, I hope your son is out of the woods now. Also, we’re all Thrasher fans, those of us who take the time and committment to be here, posting and blogging. There’s nothing in the slightest bit wrong with managing a “firewaddell” site. It just means that you, and fans like you, want to make a positive change that begins with removing the GM, for the team that you love.
I don’t blame fans for this position at all. And I have tolerance for those who think Don just needs more money or more time. They are, afterall, Thrasher fans. I do wonder, sometimes, what DRIVES them to believe that Don Waddell is the “Achitect of Champions?” I wonder what leads them to believe that we’ve got “one of the best GM’s” in the league. When there is, quite honestly, a wealth of evidence to suggest the contrary. Some fans will support a “current” GM, no matter what. That kind of loyalty is certainly admirable and has its place. Can I say that those fans are not “True Blue?” No. No, I can’t. I just can’t see how they’re going to be happy with the results they get from Waddell in the future. On the “positive” side, Waddell has shown “on-the-job” improvement. He’s learned things like … don’t max out your cap on Opening Night so that you have flexibility at the trade deadline. He’s learned … how to find “bargain barrel” free agents to fill out a roster, to compensate for ineffective drafting. He’s started to a draft a little bit better, as the years have gone by. He’s not a horrendous “NHL player for NHL player” trader. So, he does get some things right. But he’s absolutely got to answer for the team’s age being 2nd oldest in the league, when it was an expansion team back in 1999, and has had eight picks in the top 12 overall in that span.

Rawhide, when we’re talking about the ASG, perhaps conventional wisdom or logic has to be removed.
I suspect that this pending litigation causes far more difficulty for them than even they’d be willing to discuss. For what it’s worth, I COMPLETELY BELIEVE that these fellas want to win NBA and NHL Championships. I just don’t think they know how to go about doing that. And, I know that they have to be financially solvent because of the lawsuit stipulating that these teams must not be “devalued” or it brings forth more litigation that Belkin’s share of a “buyout” has be mismanaged or devalued.
So, I can’t assume, for one second, that Don Waddell will be fired. When Forbes Magazine says … Don runs a profitable ship, to tune of being the #6 overall sports GM, financially. And uhh, “Financially” is the operative word there. If you are the ASG, maybe you hold on to Waddell strictly based on “business principles?” Don’t forget, this team possibly “breaks even” … before all the Revenue-sharing dollars kick in. Which actually means … they’re making money. How much? I don’t know. I couldn’t say. If you put a gun to my head, I’d estimate somewhere between $3 million and $7 million. I’d at least begin to have a handle on it, if the NHL would make PUBLIC how much each team gets in revenue-sharing dollars. But, as we all know, That’s a national security secret that not even the NSA, CIA, FBI, ONI, DCIS, Department of State, or Homeland Security are permitted to know. And if they do know, they’d have to kill you right after they told you. So, … I don’t need to know that badly.
Freelance writer Scott Burnside, of ESPN.com, also continually advanced the idea that the Atlanta Spirit Group does not have a handle on the GM position in hockey. I don’t dispute that, even remotely. But what makes anyone think that the ASG will SUDDENLY HAVE AN EPIPHANY, such that … they arrive at the “logical conclusion” that Don Waddell should be fired?
I’m dying to hear an answer. I can hear it now. “But Brendan, that’s why they made Waddell come down to the bench. To fix what HE, ALONE, created? And if doesn’t get it done, he’s gone?” Right? Well hold on. Maybe it’s just a “financial” decision, based on not wanting to pay two coaches for one season. And Hartley’s getting paid NEXT YEAR, too. So, if Don stays … behind the bench he might just stay, too. Don Waddell is under contract through 2009, assuming he HASN’T ALREADY BEEN EXTENDED past 2009. So?? So, if the ASG doesn’t want to pay for two (2) coaches, what makes you think they want to pay for two (2) GM’s??
Right now, people are thinking, “Dude, chill. The guy is getting fired. He has to be.” Yeah well, I wouldn’t put money on that. This is the ASG. They don’t do ANYTHING right. Haven’t you noticed that, BY NOW????

Brendan, are you going to post your W-2 on this blog here so everyone can see it? I imagine you wouldn’t. With that said, I don’t understand why anyone here feels its their right to view the financial records of a privately held company. If I am upset that TBS aired “Wedding Crashers” last night, sure I can go build a website called www.firetbspresident.com, but as a consumer of their product I have no right to see any of their financial records, let alone tell them that they must lose money to make my tv viewing a better experience. After reading your post you only convinced me that Waddell is the best GM for the job, not the other way around. If he is making them that much profit, bless him and the ASG for being profitable in what is otherwise not a hockey town. Maybe if you bought season tickets yourself they can upgrade from White to someone like Gomez. And if only 10 bloggers here actually have season tickets then we are stuck with White.

Brendan, that’s just it. Not just that I don’t want to see your W-2, but I don’t expect that you should have to show it to anyone here. Likewise, I don’t expect that the ASG should have to reveal their financial records or have to answer to us because they want to make money. You guys are overly passionate about wanting to fire Waddell, but your post argued just the opposite. You spoke of how profitable he makes the company, how Forbes ranks him so high, how they do so well. If I were a business owner, particularly of this business, why wouldn’t I sign him? You convinced me with your post. Until the firewaddell.com group realizes that sports is a business and the same rules apply here as to Coca-Cola and Home Depot, it sounds like Waddell is doing a great job and should stay. When you also say that “I do wonder, sometimes, what DRIVES them”, I have to wonder what drives your group to demand a company lose money for your personal satisfaction? I’m just wondering, that’s all. No hard feelings like some of the other bloggers here, but I have to say it sounds like he should stay as long as he makes the business profitable. I know that hurts to hear that, especially when Tom says he would go complete broke, but why doesn’t Tom buy everyone here season tickets and go complete broke that way, and then those additional purchases will be enough to get a high priced defenseman.

“Profitability” depends on the context.
Off-ice it means revenues exceed costs. Simple.
ON-ICE it means something completely different. Don has failed miserably to make the ON-ICE product worthy of financial support.
All of Don’s bluster and failed promises will begin to impact the Off-ice/monetary profitability. Big-time.

So I am sheep because I understand a p/l? Look, it’s 2-0 already, root for the #1 pick at this point. As for your definition of “on-ice” profitability, I would rather stick to the definitions that the rest of the business world use. And it seems that as long as Waddell is meeting the standards set by those definitions, the ASG is going to keep him around, no matter how much you guys moan and groan. I would rather root for a new owner than a new GM. If you get a new GM, do you think they are going to give him unlimited spending to the cap or are they going to focus only on profitability still? Sadly after this blog today I am thinking we have to hope to go the Edmonton route, hope to be a flash in the pan one year like when they lost to Carolina in the Cup Finals 2 years ago (as an 8 seed mind you), then trading away their UFA superstar the next year like we did with Hossa, to this year where they are 2nd to last in the conference. Face it, we are not a hockey town like Detroit that can go out and buy talent year in and year out. I don’t think ASG is going to risk bankruptcy to try and become a hockey town. Just because you bring in a new GM with the high priced talent doesn’t guarantee you win the Cup. Until then, profitability is king, b!tch all you want, but it’s true.

Something else completely OLD? Don Waddell’s FAILED stewardship.
Do you honestly think I’ll stop spreading the TRUTH when this buffoon is still employed by the team I follow, the team he has run completely into the ground?
Nope. I’ll keep on until Don Waddell and his putrid stench is finally removed from the Atlanta Thrashers. I just wish more fans would vote with their wallet in protest of the unbelievable incompetence being shown by the organization.
I stopped subsidizing years ago—and both my bank account and personal time have benefited—Thank Ya’ very much! Here’s to hoping many more follow suit.
These owners and this GM do not deserve your hard-earned money…well, that is IF your goal is actually winning a Stanley Cup…

Sage, you’re not the answer, you’re the problem. If the diehard hockey fans don’t watch the team or go to the games, why would the ASG ever pour money into a high priced free agent? Thanks to you the pucksnsnots of the north have more proof that we are not a hockey town. Considering that you stopped years ago that was when we needed to be gaining momentum and building a fan base. That’s when we still were in a growth mode. But you had to stop. It’s all your fault Sage. Thanks for ruining hockey in Georgia. Now the ASG is only going to invest so much because “true hockey fans” like you won’t support the team. But, truthfully, because I don’t know the finances of the team, I don’t rightly know if they do or don’t make money. All I can do is “speculate.” I “believe” that the Thrashers are profitable, but I very well could be wrong. Especially, if I’ve overestimated the amount of revenue-sharing dollars. Which, again, no one knows what it is outside of the team and the NHL. Which, come to think of it, how on EARTH does Forbes really know??? The Internal Revenue Service should know.
Likewise, nothing I advance here is going to change the “mindset” over at firewaddell.com, either. If I said, “his drafting has gotten a little bit better” … they’d swamp me with the evidence that his recent efforts aren’t nearly enough to right the ship. Perhaps the drafting has been good enough for us to enter the “lottery draft” once again. Which is “fine,” as long as we get Doughty or Stampkos. But I digress.
I’m not a member of any group. I’m just one voice on a blog. And when the Thrashers get fixed, I’ll go back to attending 20 games a year. Which is something that should “please” the ASG. But it’s not MY JOB to get them fixed. It’s THEIR JOB. Above all, wins put fannies in seats better than any promotion you can think of. But if this team doesn’t come up with a “strategy” and soon, there won’t be butts in seats. Think I “like” missing games? I love the Philips Arena experience. I just won’t support the “stay the course” approach the ASG is undertaking. They need to make a change. It’s not working and it won’t work, until they address the GM position and their own strategies.
Forbes won’t have nice things to say to the ASG when the place is two-thirds empty for hockey games.
Look, I can appreciate that they want to keep payrolls low. I’ve seen teams do it, and be very successful at the same time. The Minnesota Wild, in 2003, went to the Conference Finals with a total team payroll of just over $22 million. In 2008 dollars, adjusted for inflation, that still wouldn’t meet the $34.3 million required to meet the “floor” of the salary cap. That is, the absolute minimum that the league allows.
I’m “okay” with a strategy of 11 forwards each making $1.75M to $2.75 million, who each score 20 goals, have “grit enough” to win puck battles in the corner boards, and who are super “speedy.” That’s a strategy that “fits” within what I “perceive” may be the “business plan” of the ASG. They just haven’t implemented hockey approach as an “on ice” strategy. Moreover, it takes a few years of very successful drafting to pull it off. And how do you do that, while you’ve got $8 million guys on the payroll? The strategy I’ve outlined basically allows for one high dollar player and that’s “earmarked” for the goalie. (Not Lehtonen, this is just a “hypothetical model.”) It’s going to be tough to re-sign Kovalchuk unless Kari Lehtonen and Pavelec can be secured cheaply. Which is something Waddell ought to have been working on, but hasn’t. I know, we’re all stunned by that.
Jim Slater scored. Perfect example, offthepost. Now, if Slater were a 20-goal scorer, that we’d drafted, GM Waddell could show that to the ASG and say, “It’s all in keeping with our roll four lines, with “el cheapo” contracts, and still get results. Sadly, Jim Slater, selected 30th overall, 2002, has just scored his 4th goal of the season. And unless he goes on an unmitigated “tear,” that’s not going to cut it. But what’s his salary? $750K? $850K, maybe?
If this GM’s efforts cause people who want to be at Philips Arena, (like me,) or who would “otherwise” be at Philips Arena, to abstain from attending games, then it’s “bad.” And it needs to be fixed. Like, NOW.

Thrasher Ryan, if Little and Slater shine these last dozen games that can be the best possible scenario (other than going undefeated). Two young guys who are playing for a spot next year and showing they can get it done. I am still thinking we are done and thus I hate to say it but a high draft pick would be nice (translation = it wouldn’t hurt to lose). Put White in Holik’s spot next year, and you have Little on the top line, Slater producing on the grinder line, then your choice of Christensen or Perrin on the 2nd spot, both of whom can play wing.

yes Brendan, the Wild did do that in 2003, and have they been back since? Thus my example of Edmonton. You are a flash in the pan one year and the following year you aren’t even close. My big curiosity is that TWICE today you mentioned REVENUE SHARING in BIG LETTERS so as to BRING ATTENTION to it. Why do you care so much about that? I ate salad this week. Does that mean I now have a right to all knowledge of GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES for all FARMERS? Big deal, so the league does revenue sharing, the ASG is still a privately held company and you have no right to see the books. Get over it. No matter how much you b!tch on a blog, you are still SMALL POTATOES in the eyes of the ASG and they could care less about your opinion or business theories. Enjoy the game.

Ya know something, I’m not “livid” with Todd White and Eric Perrin as centers. Marian Hossa is. But we really have a “depth strategy,” of rolling four lines of players like this, we’d win games, 4-3. We wouldn’t have SUPERSTARS, but if we won a lot, where’s the problem? People come out for wins. It’s true. They do.
I hate that I’ve missed this many games. But I’m out of options. I hated the way Hartley ran that anemic powerplay. His goaltender was insane. And the switching out Moose for Kari just for the shootout … wow. They didn’t address the Head Coach last year. And as a result, they gave the guy who ought to have fired … a 2-year deal, which they are not EATING. It took six games this year to get him fired. But still, they haven’t corrected the “Head Coach” position. Waddell’s done his level-best to coach this team. Technically, it has a “winning record” under Waddell’s leadership. But it’s inadquately addressing a problem. And under whose purview is the Head Coaching the position, if not for the GM?
Can’t a “reasonable” person SEE that? They won’t make a “hockey change” because it upsets their “profitability” and “business model.” Well, ignore a problem long enough, and it WILL affect your profits. If you’re a fan of the Thrashers … and you want to see a change … but the ownership won’t make the change … what “recourse” do you really have? Email them? Write them letters? Tell their ticket reps why you’re unhappy?
They don’t CARE. Why should they?, if everyone keeps spending money. That “fits” their business model. They want and need to make sales. They have to move inventory. Why would they change a thing?? If they get the $$, they’ll see no reason to make a change in how they own and run their business.

I meant to say, “goaltender rotation” was insane. Although, Jeff Schultz recently wrote that Kari Lehtone was “just this side” of a drool cup. Ouch.

Minnesota made the playoffs last year, and very well may win their division this year. In any event, they’ll make the playoffs. The Wild were mostly derailed with a contract holdout by Marian Gaborik a few years ago.
Look, offthepost, I’m not an auditor. I’m not demanding to see the ASG’s books. But I do think that fans, whether season ticket holders or not, ought to be made aware how close the team is to either the floor or ceiling of a cap. Why? Because if a team is unwilling to spend money to try to win, why should fans support it vigorously? It shouldn’t be a secret. I don’t care if the owners have secret bank accounts in Seychelles or Switzerland, or something. Laughing. But I do want to know how and why the Thrashers (not Hawks, not Phiips Arean) do what they do. Is that so insane?
I guess it is. It’s wildly and uncontrollably insane.

I would say in any normal sports team, Waddell as GM should be responsible for the head coach. But given that the ASG wouldn’t let Woodson get fired on 3 separate occasions, I can’t reasonably blame Waddell for that THIS year. Next season though, I better see Anderson.

It’s 2-1 Penguins after 2. STILL.
Thrashers need to step up. It is also completely unacceptable to give out bonus points to the Pens at this point in our season. This game MUST be won in regulation!
offthepost—That’s what i’m sayin too, man. I’m still disappointed Waddell didn’t trade any of our UFA’s. We had plenty of offers, but Waddell acted selfishly…. perhaps to not have to show us Thrasher fans the prospects he drafted? I don’t know. I just think it’s time that the fans deserve to see guys like Lavallee, Valabik, Desbiens.
Because it appears to me Waddell is reluctant to rely on our young guys.
This team needs to step it up in the 3rd!

Brendan - I have to tell you that I have been very happy to see that you have seen the light in regards to the “head coach” situation. In hind sight, placing a new one after BH was let go should have been done.
Everything you said about Hartley above is not without marit, (albeit I actually liked the shoot-out switch in Phily last year…at least it showed some kind of strategic thinking. Alas, it didn’t work out, BUT if it had you would see EVERY team considering it…by-gones).
Anyway….about BH…even with the above mentioned items, there is ONE thing Hartley did for this team. he made them better.
When he took over in Jan. ‘03, he inherited a squad that finished dead last in the east the year prior and started 8-20-4-1 under Curt Frazer that season. BH lead that same team to 20-14-5-1 that year, then to an 11th place finish the next, to 10th the next, to 2 points out of the playoffs the next, to winning the division after that season.
“incremental advancement”…
Every year the team was better then the previous. Even with all that weird, quirky stuff.
While it’s completely understandible WHY he was fired, I can’t help but wonder if this team would have actually been in better shape today if he were allowed to complete the season. Yes, it’s purely speculative…but he did have history on his side in that regards.
Regardless, as you have stated, not replacing him after his release has been a mistake.

Thrasher Ryan, I would want to hear exactly what was offered. Technically we still don’t know we got a better deal from Pittsburgh versus say Montreal. Given that the trade was made with the Penguins you have to say “yes”. But the point is that unless we know what was exactly offered I would want to know for sure that someone actually WANTED Zhitnik. Now was it a 1st round pick or 7th round pick for Holik. I just want to know that first. Given he is gone at the end of the year I don’t see giving up a team captain for a 7th round pick. Now a first rounder and he better have been traded.

Thrashers LOSE 3-2, SO.
Brendan—By my count, the only way I see them getting in the playoffs is winning 14 of the next 15. Not happening.
offthepost—A few days ago there was a link on Custance’s blog to a Waddell quote saying it was 1st Round pick.
It doesn’t matter now, although it makes it easier to fire Waddell when he consistently makes boneheaded decisions like that. Bygones.
I would be calling John Anderson right now. Waddell will probably do nothing. I’ll have no part in a new 3 year plan. Unless it’s for a GM NOT NAMED Don Waddell.
Regardless, the coaching decision must be made NOW, while there are still games left to work up the chemistry with the players and the new coach.
For those who don’t realize it yet, this team bagged it in in November.

OK Stendec, you can freely scream about KL on the second goal - not good. But give the kid some credit, stopped every shot after that up to the shootout.
Perrin needs a new move or to be taken out of the shootout lineup. That was embarrassing.
You all are more knowledgable of the game than me, can you explain why no whistle on the first goal? It looked to me like KL had it covered up. With all of the goalie padding it would seem that the puck could always be dug out with enough effort. Seemed a little cheap from the refs.

Expected Letemin to fold up like cheap toilet paper in shootout but so-called team star? Another Marian Hossa on horizon! Somebody tell the prima donna there is no “I” in TEAM. There is one in Ilya. From first to worst? Without a doubt. Deservedly so! Thrashers quit weeks ago. What a bunch of untalented clueless quitters. GO FLAMES!

RH - Good point re: BH
While it’s completely understandible WHY he was fired, I can’t help but wonder if this team would have actually been in better shape today if he were allowed to complete the season. Yes, it’s purely speculative…but he did have history on his side in that regards. Regardless, as you have stated, not replacing him after his release has been a mistake.
BH was a hard a#@. The players did not like him and he was OK with it. However, he could motivate. The problem is that his style did not fit the players or the current game. The problem is that the DW did what many teams do in this situation. The bring in the guy who is easier and more friendly. (The Falcons did the same thing when they hired Jim Mora). You lose the ability to motivate and teach when you want to be friends. DW scouted and drafted or traded for these players. He is inherently conflicted in criticizing them because it is partially criticizing himself.
The only silver lining is that instead of hiring a coach who is too soft, hopefully ATL got that out of its system with DW and we can get a hard nosed motivator in here.

Folks, ease up. DW is not going anywhere and he is a solid GM. Although difficult, we are still in it, but must start winning. It is a parity league with the teams that get hot at the end, the winners…just look at Ottawa’s relative position now, could be a 5 or 6 seed. Those who continually remain negative, really do not understand the business of the NHL and are commenting on pure emotion.

Ok, Stendec is officially loony. Say what you want about Waddell, Lehtonen, Zhitnik, ok. But when you start bad mouthing Ilya, you deserve to be cross checked in the mouth. Given you are purely emotional, I shouldn’t be dragged into this. HOWEVER, the shootout is not at game speed because the clock is stopped. Some of Kozzie’s best goals came at half speed. I don’t know what you expect. Ilya goes 100 for 100 in shootout? He just scored on a penalty shot yesterday. When the announcer calls Perrin’s shot before he does it, it’s clear that these players are scouted. They have to change up.

Down 2-0, the Thrashers did well to get it tied. Shots on goal were 34-33, in favor of Pittsburgh. Waddell actually said I agree with in the postgame shows, “With six shootout shooters and no goals, that’s almost unbelievable.”
The Other Bob, well, it’s seven losses. It’s not like we’re going to the playoffs. At this point, every point kinda, sorta “hurts us.” There’s good news in that regard, Florida defeated the NY Isles, 1-0. They’re going to climb ahead of us.
Rawhide, I’m sorry it took me so long. I genuinely believed Don Waddell could “fix it” all by himself. I was wrrrrr. I was not correct.
ThrasherRyan, so who do you like? Doughty or Stampkos? I like Doughty, even though he’ll take a year longer to develop, more than likely. I’m in it for the longhaul. I want a new GM to have a “fair chance” to develop young players. If the ASG gives either DW or the next GM an “ultimatum,” playoffs or you’re fired, then we’ll see all sorts of craziness again at the trade deadline next year.
Stendec, Kari gave up one goal in these three shots. As did Moose. That’s not so horrible. Of course, why Waddell isn’t locking up Lehtonen right now, before the price gets any higher, I’ll never know. Unless Sage is right that the ASG has decided to go in a different direction and they want the “new” GM to negotiate all future player contracts. And if that’s the case, I’ll certainly ease up a bit. But I honestly don’t think the next Thrashers GM would says, 3-years/$9.0 million absolutely “hamstrung” me at the goaltender position.
Ilya Kovalchuk has never “quit” all season. He was here and TRYING even when Hartley was still the coach. He’s probably still suffering a bit from the Ruutu knee hit. That’s all. Is he “sad” Hossa is gone? Shrugs. Probably. But it’s not as if he didn’t know the Thrashers were sinking before that deadline. Ya know?
Rawhide, I just realized this was a homecoming for Thorburn, Recchi, Christensen, Armstrong and Hedberg. Who knew we had so many former Penguins!
Hope Nic Havelid is okay.

THINK about this, fellow Thrashers fans…Even if ‘I’ were the GM of this team since its inception and ‘I’ was a disaster of epic proportions, ‘I’ would have the SAME number of playoff WINS as your brilliant Donny during his tenure at the helm…’I’—or any other GM—couldn’t possibly do much worse!!!
Yeah, he’s “solid” all right!
When will ya’ll STOP sipping the Kool-Aid and come back to reality???
If the ASG keeps this clown on board next year in any capacity, then there should be a boycott of the product until the VOICE of the fan is heard loud and clear…If this is the only way to get the owners’ attention, then so be it.
If they move their product as a result, then so be it as well—we’ll be better off in the long-run without these owners who would keep Waddell after nearly a decade of incompetence…
Decision-making is what separates the winners from the losers…We’ve spent max-cap before and didn’t make it into the 2nd season, so that is no longer an excuse…Let’s see, that leaves the reason for our performance with the players OR the person who, alone, selected the players…
Pretty easy identification of the ‘cause’ of the majority of our problems…But, you know what they say: You can lead a sheep to water, but you cannot make them drink…
