Thrasher Math 101
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
(Thrasher Math 101 class at Blueland University. Prof. Rawhide takes the lectern)
OK, class settle down Class? CLASS? SHUT UP!
(Ahem) Thank you.
Smoothie & Ranallo, good to see you both on time Blue Crew stretching exercise class must have gotten out early Manley, thanks for parking the tank out back and not on the lawn Alan, please take off the skates while in here very tough to keep an edge on the blades otherwise, ya know. Sara the brownies you baked for the class, very tasty indeed interesting flavor. Some kind of secret ingredient?
Thrasher Ryan, please take this note to the office and have them fax to Dean Waddell as he is in Naples, FL getting in an early spring break with 29 of his friends. It says, “Sign Kari and Dupruis, NOW”!
Five_Hole, HookyBob, Kracker and Pucksdeep stop trying out each other’s mouth guards that’s just ewww. Please, just take your seats. The same goes for the rest of you lot’s of new faces in here.
First of all, just a reminder that Dr. Custance is still conducting class in Thrasher Reading 301 and the information he is providing is of great value. Also, I want you all to take time to join Brendan in his Thrasher Philosophy discussions but make sure you take a recording device as you won’t be able to write it all down. Given the time of year, you’ll want to put these on your agendas.
Brian, your absence recently has been noticed and you’ll have time to explain yourself later.
Now then, last time we met the discussion revolved around mathematical formulas that would get the Thrashers to 95 or 96 points. The theory being that this was the required level to get to the playoffs. We studied the PEG formula and the need to average 15-16 points per month. Yes, you remember
GaVaHokie, get that puck out of your mouth!
Anyway, do you have those notes with you?? Good. I want you to take them out of your notebooks, crumple them up and toss them away! Why? Because the only way Atlanta is getting to 96 points right now is to gain 34 points in the last 21 games. That would be something like going 17-4 down the stretch. The official statistical term for such odds of that happening is “notgonnahappennowayinhell” here, I’ll write that on the board for you.
Puckjunque, will you please nudge J(Z) over there and wake him thanks.
Anyway, what we are looking at now is something around 90 points, maybe a point or two more or less but the way the Southeast is shaping up, that just might do it.
Rstroz Roswell Thrasherfan you two settle down back there. Don’t make me separate you two.
Now, what is the math regarding getting from here to said 90 points? Simple get 28 points out of the 42 available. Seems easy enough, right?
Well, let’s take out the ‘ol #2s and do some figuring, here. Assume 90 points is the magical number OK? And take into account that the Thrashers now have 62 points alrighty? So that would mean that Atlanta has, to date, 68.89% of the targeted total. Then take into account that the 61 games played to date is 74.39% of the 82 games on the schedule got that?
Now what that all means is that with right at three quarters of the season gone the Thrashers still need to gain one third of the points needed just to have a shot. Or, to simplify this for our special student from Livonia, Michigan, they need to get roughly 33% of the points needed in the last 25% of the season.
NASCAR Dave, your eyes are all glossy did I just make your head spin? You’ll want to go see the nurse leave the Daytona 500 Official Program here, please thank you.
Lastly, the Thrashers got some help the last few days. New Jersey and Boston both beat the Hurricanes, (albeit the Bruins collapse in the last minute of the game allowed Carolina a point), and Pittsburgh’s 3 late goals slapped down the Panthers. This leaves us only three points behind the Canes with two in hand, two ahead of Florida with one game in hand and tied with the Caps with a game to give, (which will be played tonight vs. the Islanders). So, Atlanta has gotten some much-needed assistance during their time off.
OK, now for the discussion part of class .

Professor, Pucksdeep’s mouth guard taste’s funny.
So, I get your math. You’re asking a team that’s played roughly .500 for the season to play .750 the rest of the way. The good news is that everyone else in our division is in the same predicament. The un-good news is the uncertainty of DW. Is he a buyer or seller?
Rstroz keeps whacking me with his stick. Stop that.
It occurs to me that if we hold on to Hossa, what’s the difference between that, and if DW were to trade for a top-notch player who’s going to be a UFA after the season? Really, there is no difference. Except that with Hossa, we already know how he fits with the team.
All I have left to say is, go Orange turds!

Sister Mary Elephant! Haven’t heard that in years. Great Cheech and Chong reference. Next you’ll bring in Sgt. Stedenko.
Now all we have to do is figure out what the Thrashers have been smokin’.

Nice Job Rawhide.
I think you also need to take into account that the Rags and Flyers are in a freefall. The Thrashers are just 4 points out of the last spot in the Eastern Conference. 90 just might be enought this year.
I still think it is possible that two SE division teams can get in. However the real question is what these teams look like after the trade deadline. Florida may be a seller at this point, the Caps will likely add a piece or two, and who knows what the Canes might do…I think Jim Rutherford is not done moving out players he just doesn’t like(Eric Cole) that have pretty decent trade value.

Prof: With all the speculation about Hoss flying west, Wolves continue to win and go unnoticed. Blackhawk website carries some predictions that they wouldn’t beat the Wolves but still we send the line of Boults-Larsen- and Thorborn out there to do zero. Bring in the Wolves and send these no grit, over the hill pansies out west or anywhere. Sick and tired of a team that won’t stand up when pressed.

UGH! I didn’t see the Canes getting two last night to steal a point….but I missed the Pens storming back, too, to help us against those Panthers. I went to bed early so I’d have plenty of rest for this here hockey math class this morning :) Hockey and math just don’t seem to go together, it makes my head hurt like most of this book learning does, the only book I like is a playbook and hockey don’t really have a lot of plays so it’s a pretty thin book….sorry, getting too much sleep makes me run on in the morning.
Anyway, if these other Southeast teams can each lose to the other ones without tying it up…can they all lose?…and if the Hockey Birds can win, we get some of your points you keep talkin about….all these games on next days worries me though, I don’t do to well working one day after another and neither do these Thrashers players.
And for this Dean Waddell feller, I ain’t never had too much idea that he always knows what he’s doing but if he wants to transfer some players and expel the slackers….well, he’s the one that’s got the paddle…..HEY! Russian, get your wet finger outta my ear! Is that some fool thing y’all do over there in Russia?….wanna rassle?…

I don’t think it’ll take 90 pts to win the SouthEast, but if someone gets there, they’ll definitely win it. I would guess 86 pts would win the Southeast this year, and be the only club to get in from our divison.

DWTOO - Yes, Sister Mary Elephant…glad to see there are some around here “seasoned” enough to get that. I’ll see how I can get Sgt. Stedenko inserted in somehow…
B.Thenet - Philadelphia is on a 2-7-1 skid…but the Rangers are 6-2-2….HOWEVER, the blowing of a 5-0 lead to lose in a SO was priceless!!!
Jim - I would love to see Stuart and Little and Hayder, (Oh my)!…play in Atlanta again…
But I think the feeling is that they are being handled better right now down on the farm. Not saying that’s the right or wrong way to deal with ‘em…just an observation.
Another observation…right now there are only three teams in the east with a losing record in the last 10 games, (Phil, Ott & NYI). All 5 teams in the SE have winning records over that span of games.

I am personally all in favor of extending/renewing DuPuis’s contract. IMO, he is the only one I’ve seen who plays hard game in/game out, even if we’re getting blown out. Assuming the price is right. Mr DW has a habit of overpaying for personnel.

Rawhide—Amazingly, last week we actually “completed” our mission. Kind of. We won 2 out of the 3. We thought we could get all 3, but 2 was the minimum amount acceptable, and we got it.
I’m pretty sure you already know what this week’s mission is. We must win BOTH games. 2 out of the 2. It is that time of the year. Every game is a playoff game now.
So let’s hope Waddell can tweak the roster to our liking and we can pull out 2 big wins this week.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. We CANNOT give out ANYMORE damn BONUS POINTS! All games MUST be won in regulation!
It’s time to ride it out with KL.

While you all are sittin in class, I’m uh down here in Naples at the swamp buggy races.
There are sum interestin fellers down here in suits with sum weird signs in their handz, like Sundin for rent, Hossa for sale, Zhitnik for a bag of pucks.
Well, I hope I didn’t sling too much durt on them signs while they were in the standz watchin.
I did find one sign with an under contract attachment at the bottom on it, some Modry feller.
Gotta go, its my turn ta race again.

Pucksdeep - Whew. That’s a relief. If I had been sharing mouth guards with another guy, that would have been really gay. Unless we were both girls, which could have been really hot. That, of course, deserves another blog.
OK, now for something really unpopular (yeah, like I never say stuff like that here). I think we should not resign the Moose.
Yes, he’s done well for us. And he’s probably done a lot for Kari’s development. However, Kari needs to know he’s the #1 and right now he’s still sharing a lot of time with Moose. I say that next year we bring up the Pavelec kid. He’s cheaper than Moose, so we save a little on cap space, and supposedly, he’s ready.

Jethro - You should have taken the Zhitnik sign and made sure everyone across the entire southeast could see it. Seriously though, I wouldn’t get rid of Zhitnik for a bag of pucks.
A used puck bag, maybe with a few holes in it, would have more use and character than Zhitnik.

Alan - Funny you said that. Aftur I won my last race, this feller that kinda looked like a duck with a suit on, came up to me and paid me to put that Zhitnik for a bag of pucks sign on my swamp buggy.
And I forgot to tell you all, there was a little puny queer lookin feller down here with a Habs Inside/Out sign, so me and the uther racers tooks bets on who could keep him under our buggy tires the longest. We hadnt seen that feller’s head above the mud for 30 minutes now.

RAWHIDE! Hey Brother! My eyes are GLOSSY because I just saw THIS ON HOCKEYBUZZ.COM!!!
The Hossa situation is perhaps the muddiest of all.
There is even a rumour out there today started by a “supposed” facebook page (that my facebook expert is convinced is a fake) where Valterri Filppula has announced he was traded to Atlanta.
There is little doubt that Atlanta would do that deal for Hossa in a second.
WHAT THE HECK IS UP WITH THAT?
By Rawhide
February 20, 2008 12:55 PM | Link to this
NASCAR Dave - That would be the Eklund rumor de jour…although to be fair, I think even he stated that the source is “questionable”….
If/when Hossa is dealt, I’ll bet you it’ll be a situation that no one foreshadowed.
Thrasher Ryan - Thanks…thanks a pant-load! However, both of those players would be great! I’d even put ‘em on the same line.
Five_Hole - Unless we were both girls, which could have been really hot. That, of course, deserves another blog. - HHmmmm, that gives me an idea I can pitch to the ajc.com for this summer.

TableHockey, Kari seems like the kind of guy who would be up for just that. I’d take my shoes off before I went inside though. I get the feeling Kari has a thing for crisp and clean.
And do you (does anyone) think Hossa really has the flu? Seems fishy to me…BUT if a deal were in the making (and we all know that it is) would a player start skipping practices before the “transaction” took place? Does that happen?

Pucksdeep - I was actually out at practice yesterday as well (trying to get a few last items autographed in the event Hossa is traded) and Hossa certainly didn’t look sick at practice. In fact he and steve weeks were the last ones off the ice. I supposed he could have come down with it last night but he looked fine yesterday.
Not sure about protocol for attending practice when a trade is in the works. Guess we could ask a canes fan if Commodore and Stillman attended practice the day they were traded. I still haven’t figured out that deal.

From the Feb. 18th Sporting News, they report, on page 36, that the Thrashers are interested in goaltender Ray Emery. I do wonder where they came up with that? The Sporting News also speculates that the Stars, Devils, Senators, Rangers, and Wild are interested in Marian Hossa. This is a vastly different list than that found in the AJC article.
On Feb. 27, 2007, 44 players and 28 draft picks were moved at the trade deadline. In the 26 days which preceeded the deadline there were 24 trades, 47 players and 21 draft picks exchanged (Source: The Sporting News).
If we are going to see anything like that again this year, A LOT is about to happen.
By the way, nice spread on Kari’s house. I loved his pool and deck. Even the bathroom was unique. How ‘bout that sink? It’s a giant glass bowl. What do that they ran him, in Brookhaven? The taxes alone on that place would sink a good number of folks. Looks like KL went to a lot of expense to “personalize” that home. I think he intends on staying here. Why not offer him a contract now?? Before the price goes up.
By five_hole

TableHockey I believe the protocol is, you don’t take a chance on the player getting hurt, if you’re about to trade him. If they get hurt, it nixes the deal. Typically, they sit out games, and even practices, ‘cause players can get hurt in practices.

I don’t think Hossa has the flu. He knows his days in Atlanta are numbered, though, and I wonder if he’s a little depressed about it, despite all that he’s said. It’s hard to live in one city one minute, and be shipped off to another at any given moment. It’d be something he’s experienced twice in his NHL career now.

Professor, if I’ve learned my lesson, if Thrashers beat the Canes tomorrow in regulation, they will be 1 points behind with 2 games in hand and lead in tie breaking right? So, do that mean it is a game that Thrashers cannot lose no matter what? :)

Alan - I don’t think Hossa has the flu. He knows his days in Atlanta are numbered, though, and I wonder if he’s a little depressed about it, despite all that he’s said. - Interesting comment. If that is so…why wouldn’t he then just go on and sign?
Tim - It makes it a VERY important game, to say the least. It’s a swing of 4 points….behind by one w/ 2 in hand or down by 5 w/ those two games.
First scenario…you hold your own destiny in your hands…the other, you still need help from others.
Also keep in mind tha Washington playes tonight, Florida tomorrow as we do. There is the possibility to gain two on everyone…or the reverse.
I think I’m bordering on Thrasher Philosophy now….Brendan!!

That’s wrong for so many reasons…
By Alan

Rawhide - Simple. Atlanta isn’t a contender. I do believe we’ve been down this path before, Professor.
He might like it here, if he is to be believed when he says he likes Atlanta… but without the fortitude of the owners (read as: huge conglomerate clusterf#ck) and GM to bring in a #1 center … as well as defensive help for that matter, he sees greener pastures elsewhere. But he, along with countless other players who get traded, wants to control his own destiny.
Atlanta, and more specifically Waddell, is in a sticky situation. Does he stay, or does he go? He wants to keep Hossa, but realistically speaking, he probably knows he won’t be able to re-sign him in the offseason.
Atlanta could keep him and try to make a run for the cup, much like when I blew a head gasket in East Ellijay with only $12 in my pocket. So instead of calling a tow truck (trading Hossa for reinforcements), I bought a case of oil and drove it home (keep Hossa for a playoff run). The difference here is, I made it home. The Thrashers? They’re unlikely to bring a cup home.
Atlanta could trade him, though, and get a nice return to build for the future - hopefully this time, building around Kovalchuk. Most people want to build the team around Kovalchuk anyway, but it’s all up to our buddy Waddell. He seems content with what we have, though, even though the entire team looks up to Kovalchuk.
So there are some of my expanded thoughts, in between building and repairing computers at work.

Ranallo Your a sick, sick puppy! I admire that!
Alan - I knew I could dig it out of you! very nicely put.
However, I still hold out that much hope that DW can keep him here, add some key players, make the playoffs, do well in them and then convince him to sign after the season…as Hossa has even said he’s not opposed to.
Don’s big gamble, you know.

If Waddell can manage to keep Hossa and get a good center and some defense, then I think we’ll at least show potential and might just make it past the first round this year. Will it be enough to keep Hossa? At this point, it’s anyone’s guess. And trying to enter the Mind Of Waddell™ is a trying task at best, but is often downright impossible for most.

And of course, the high road takes us back to Cheech & Chong, and Sister Mary Elephant. Full circle.
BTW, I still have the original vynal album Big Bamboo, with the rolling paper that came with it.

Tony C I like that thought of trading a LW from the Wolves. I am not sure which one I would trade but here are the facts.
We have 3 talented LW’s in Chicago. Sterling, Stuart, and LaValle.
On our roster today we have 5 natural LWs Kovy, Kozlov, Dupuis (although he has been a RW 90% of the season), Boulton, and Larsen.
Looking back the smart thing would of been to not sign Kozlov to a 3 year deal but, no of us disagreed with that move last July, infact we all rejoiced.
Now Sterling is an RFA, so we have to make him at least a decent offer. 17, 13, and 29 are under contract and 9 we all want to see resigned.
I don’t believe we should get rid of either LaVallee or Stuart (both are big bodies that create space that we desperately need).
In conclusion, (I was obviously in English Class) we part with Sterling.
We simply don’t have anyroom for him to make the team.

Speaking of the Wolves, has anyone noticed that Kiwi has 17 goals thus far?? I don’t think our 2nd PP unit will miss a beat with Joel manning the point should we be lucky enough to unload Zhitty bang bang. Problem is we’ll probably have to part ways with Mr. Popovic too add “value”.
But I’m fine with:
Tobes/Havy
Kiwi/Klee
Ex/SMac
Bring Boris up for reinforcements…what the heck!

PJ - sorry I missed your question earlier. Brookhaven is north of lenox mall just a mile or two. I imagine Kari paid big $$$ to have a 4000 sq ft home there.
Today I did not get there in time to watch them practice. I rolled in about 20 minutes after they wrapped up.
I did most of the practice yesterday - they were working the guys pretty hard.

Islanders won in a shootout….well they came back to save us a point from the Caps. The Thrash simply have to win tomorrow - repeat as necessary until the end of the season.
Buff beat Lightning…If it wasn’t already, that should really be it for the Bolts, they are 10 points out and trail everybody.

dear god this blog went crazy today. $ 5 says DW (if he trades hossa) gets jipped in the deal.
I personally will give DW 3 bags of pucks and a handful of gravel for Zhitty. Just so we can call up a more competent replacement

According to my co-worker Don Waddell was interviewed on the NHL on the fly this morning and he said it did not look likely that they would be able to resign Hossa.
I don’t know if this is new footage and Waddell is saying no resigning period or if this is from the interview where he said it seemed unlikely that they would resign Hossa before the trade deadline.
If it’s a new quote I would expect it to show up in the trade section of NHL.com this morning.

I think that quote is a few days old, TableHockey. Still, it’s nice to see that realization has set in for Waddell, and he now finally understands what fans have said since 1 July 07 passed by without an extension taking place.

Of course, I missed Bobby Holik on 680TheFan this morning. I caught the very tail end of it. I think he made some comment about Kari Lehtonen’s new house. Did any of you hear it? And if so, can you summarize it a bit for me?
Show us the mighty power of the blog!! We need to know this stuff.

We have a good chance as long as we don’t sell, even if we keep Hoss and have to let him go in the summer. But is keeoing with the C&C references, maybe we should enlist the help of the Tactical Women’s Alert Team.

Over on Craig C’s blog they are reporting that Montreal has ordered gear for Hossa.
If that is true - any speculation on who we get from the Habs?

Brendan - Holik’s comments were basically how the team is to complacent…that the players need to find that “desire”…that “fire” inside of them.
he said the shots for/against ratio was “unacceptable”.
Regarding Kari’s house…he said it reflected who he was and is style…but he has only seen the outside of it.
Not that it helps you now…but they replayed it in the 9:00 hour.

Good enough!, thank you Rawhide. The very blog master himself delivered first, and in the clutch. Well done.
Of course, I have my “theories” why this team lacks desire. Dust off the Philosophy 101 texts. Here, from St. Thomas Aquinas, it reads, “Hockey teams shalt never prosper when filled with players who didn’t ‘choose’ to be there.”
Wow. As true THENNNN as it is now. Truly, a “visionary,” that Thomas Aquinas. “Really Brendan, I’m quite familiar with all Saint Thomas’ works, and uhh, I never found that passage.” “That’s because it’s ‘tucked away,’ somewhere in the back. In a ‘later edition.’ If you UPDATED your AQUINAS collection more than once every 20 years, you’d know that.
(Peeking around. Seeing if I got away with that one.)

Rawhide—It’s put up or shut up time. No more excuses. They have used them all up. MUST-WIN game tonight. Cannot give out ANY BONUS POINTS!
At first I was thinking we will be looking at at 3-2 type game, but I have a funny feeling the Thrasher firepower actually shows up tonight.
Thrash win, 5-4.
Where ya’ at, PJ?

TerryD - Estute observation and suggestion.
TR & Brendan - You both have tripped up on the theme and purpose of my next blog which will be posted shortly after lunch…as for PJ, I have instructed her to hold the prayer until that time.

I hate it when you do that Rawhide! I hate “chasing” you around the internet!
Can you re-post my post on that one then? I know you have some high tech skills.
Also, PJ needs to get that prayer in early because these blogs are gonna all clogged up with the trade action that is about to go down today. Mark my words.

Just found this (hadn’t heard about Carle being involved before…I like him)
The Sharks and Thrashers have discussed a blockbuster trade that would send C Patrick Marleau and D Matt Carle to Atlanta for F Marian Hossa and C Bobby Holik, according to The New York Post.
Of course, its the New York Post, so…who knows.

John Manasso has a two-page spread article in The Sporting News on Dany Heatley. In it, he mentions that Atlanta fans still have venom towards Heatley, and specifically cited that Heatley took heat from ATlanta fans for saying that he was happy to be in a real hockey city. Or “a” hockey city. I’m not looking at the article, presently. It was words to that effect.
In it, Heatley says, “Why do fans do anything? They do what they want.” Manasso cites Kozlov and Kovalchuk as saying, “Heatley doesn’t deserve any boos.”

RH—It’s cool. No worries. I will re-post it on the “new” blog. I had to make some minor changes anyways.
I think the real question is will the “new” blog be replaced by a “newer” blog after the game tonight? You have a habit of doing that!
Just let it ride, Rawhide!
