Trade Rumors? I Got Your Trade Rumors
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It’s just after the NHL All Star game and before the trade deadline. Ah yes, ‘tis the season to fire up the ‘ol NHL trade rumor mill! Now, I know we are all glued to our computer screens awaiting the announcement of the Hossa deal that would send him to Ottawa or Pittsburgh or Nashville or Montreal or Anaheim or the Islanders or Dallas or Kitchener, Ontario and it could come at any time now. But there are a plethora of other rumored deals that are being not so subtly bantered about the cyber world as well.
So, seeing that names and deals are being dangled out there like a Michael Jackson baby and credible sources are as sparse as stray cats near a Chinese restaurant, let’s delve into the practice of trade rumors ourselves, shall we?
Keep in mind what you’re paying for this service and the fact that I, or you, will probably wind up as close to anything as anyone else.
Rob Blake: The L.A. Kings are said to be shopping the 38-year-old defender as a rental to a contending team. He’s got 5 goals and 26 points on the season. He is 6’-4” and is currently tied for 17th in assists for defensemen. This might be worth a future pick or two.
If your thinking about this as a possible Thrasher pick-up look at it like this going into a playoff run I present you with Klee, Zhitnik and Blake. Pick two.
Brian Campbell: The Buffalo Sabres are in the same pickle with this defender as the Thrashers are with Marian Hossa. The 28-year-old Strathroy, Ontario native has amassed 4 goals and 31 assists so far this season, is a +1 and puts in 25:16 TOI. He also has only 6 PIM what, no stupid penalties?
If a Hossa/Heatley-type sign and trade deal could be worked out between the two clubs, we could swap the two put Campbell’s defensive prowess on the blue line and replace Hossa with Stuart or Little.
But, nah we are just fine on defense.
Peter Forsberg: It has been reported that the Detroit Red Wings were interested in Forsberg’s services. However, they were rejected quicker then I was by Debbie Hesslefielder in the 11th grade, (and with a lot less condescension and laughter, I might add). I know it seems odd I mean, a team like the Wings? Who wouldn’t want to play for them?
Well, my unnamed source tells me that Peter explained his decision by saying, “Well, yeah I mean Detroit is a great team and all. But I’ve heard about this whack-job from near-by Livonia who feels the need to chase the team bus and stalk the players as they leave the practice arena. If you let him get too close he has a tendency to drool on his team idols. I’m too old to deal with that %$#&”! Good point.
OK, now you give it a try

Just curious if your “unnamed source” is still your 7 month old cat.
I’ve also read about Recchi and Holik on the block. They do say, something about where there’s smoke …
I doubt if the Thrashers will do much until the absolute last moment, so we can see if we’re still in the hunt or fall behind too far to catch up.

Is the ice puckey season still going? Why don’t they move the team to someplace that likes ice puckey? No one here cares anything about ice puckey or who the Trashers have on their roster. Move the Trashers to Fargo or some other figid, uninhabitable place. They probably need an ice puckey team in Fargo.

Oh dear, this particular blog will devolve quickly I see into, well, let’s just say, a less serious hockey conversation.
Since both the Sabres and Thrashers are in for the struggle of their lives to make the PO, DWad should collude with good ‘ol Darcy by trading “need for need” — we get some much needed blueline help and they get some 1st line scoring punch to jumpstart their offense. Hell, we’ll even throw in Alexi Zhitnik! snicker snicker
Both teams stand to lose their star players to free-agency so why not trade with each other?? Darcy should know the ASG is too cheap to pony up the coin for a LT deal with Carrot Top…they might even get him back after he has to suffer playing with Ken Klee and / or Exelby for any length of time!!

Didn’t Rob Blake just break his foot or leg or something? If he’s healthy by the deadline, I’d guess he goes to the Avs for a prospect and a pick.
As to Hoss, I’ll go on record saying that he’ll be traded to a club we never suspected for a package of young players and picks we never guessed of. And I’ll say it’ll be a great deal for us, and he’ll bring the highest return at the deadline, someone will seriously overpay for him as there are few sellers and many buyers.
It seems that every year at the deadline, few of the rumored deals occur as it’s being bandied about (meaning the guys rumored to be traded usually are, but not to the teams or return that is rumored).
Brendan, if Hoss isn’t traded by the deadline (and not re-signed by us by then), then Waddell is more incompetent than even I imagined (and that’s saying a lot). There is no way they let him go for nothing.

I think Hossa is gone. Look, why else was his All Star jersey going for 50% off in the Team Gear store when Ilya’s is still at full price?
I suspect it might be out of DWs hands, and that the owners want some kind of return from Hossa if he isn’t signed.

David Duke - Have you ever heard of the Patriot Act? If you haven’t, let me tell you some of the inner workings. Anyone considered an undesirable or possible threat to the country has every form of communication device they own monitored without a warrent. The AJC must divulge your email address upon request without your knowledge and you will be tracked from that point forward. The easiest way to “make the list” is place certain key words in written form on any form of document viewable to the general public. The name you have used on this blog instantly qualifies you for the list. Therefore, please understand, your phone and website visits will probably be traced for awhile. I would strongly suggest that you use better discretion in the future.

I would love to see a Hossa for Campbell swap, but there is a problem. Campbell said he is not going to talk contract until after the season. I find it hard to believe that DW would trade Hossa for a pending UFA, so Darcy Reiger would have to work out a sign and trade with a player who doesn’t want to talk about it. Doesn’t sound like a likely situation at all. Also, Hoss would have to be conviced that Buffalo would be where he wants to play (a pretty tough sell if you ask me).

Rawhide I have a question I’d like you to ask the players. When signing free agent contracts, do they consider ice conditions at the arena? In other words, I’ve heard that the Atlanta ice is among the worst in the league. Would potential free agents avoid us because of this? Would it cause potential free agents (think Hossa) to go elsewhere?
As a secondary question, see if you could get them to list (in their opinion) the best ice/worst ice.
Thanks

Please people. Read my comments closely. KL has potential! Sure, Thrasher D is terrible but…Stellar netminders overcome awful defenses! If a goalie makes 57 saves but team loses 3-2 is that considered a success? Even if other masked guy only turns aside 17 of 19 shots for win? Sometimes goaltenders ARE the team! That is why inopportune (goal right after team scores) or soft goals are unacceptable. Especially, as noted, with porous defense! See KL in goal again. Sigh. GO BLUE!

five_hole - I don’t know if ice surface would decide a free agents’ choice of destinations or not, but I recall hearing that for the most part the ice surface is considered pretty poor in most facilities. The one arena that I have heard is routinely praised around the NHL as having good ice is Edmonton’s.

Blue Jackets and Sabres trade: Fedorov and vyborny + 2008 Pick for Afinogenov and Campbell
By five_hole

Hi Russ I would have no idea how atheletes think; I’m pretty much the other end of the spectrum. However, if I was a FA that was in demand, if I had my choice of 2 stadiums (let’s say one was Edmonton), and my other stadium’s ice is slushy (hard to skate in), uneven (puck doesn’t stay flat) which would affect my stats, and assume money and other things are pretty much even, I’d have to go with the better ice rink. Wouldn’t you?
I guess what I’m asking is; how hard is it to attract free agents to Atlanta? Would they love to play here? Would they avoid us? From the signings I remember (Klee, White, et al) I’d have to say either we’re going after the wrong talent or the top guys don’t want to come here.

So no monkey puck excuses, please. Yank his sorry A++! Ah for a quality netminder. Another choke job. How sad! Beginning to think IK a liability. Team responds to his NOT being on ice. Go figure! What a pathetic bunch of passive looosers!!!! I’m just about totally resigned to the reality that this team does not have the toughness nor the grit necessary to win tight, hotly contested games. If we could clone Mark Recchi and have one of him on each line (and teach Dupuis how to be a goal scorer), we would be unstoppable. Rex never loses a one on one puck battle and if he does, which is rare, he just keeps fighting and fighting until he gets the puck back. If only we had Mr. Tkachuk to play center between Kovy and Rex. Todd White isn’t any better than Jim Slater…he got absolutely abused tonite. If I hadn’t given up beer for Lent, I be on my 5th beer right now!!!!!!!

Amending my 9:25 and 9:34 posts. Should be Perrin, not White.
However, upon further review I see that KL went down on his own accord, trying to draw a penalty, allowing shot to go in.
I blame KL for both goals.
I blame ENTIRE TEAM (except Dupuis) for masterful CHOKE-JOB!

No points for style. No points for fancy skating. No points for near miss goals. Only points for wins. Regulation, overtime or shootout! True champions realize this fact of NHL life. Thrashers situation not that bad. Just need goalies, scorers and defensemen. Then again, maybe it is that bad after all! Hoist one for monkey puck and butt dive. David Duke - Uh, normally I welcome new bloggers on this site…however it seems as though your not a fan of the sport of hockey. We here understand that there are those who are yet to gain a proper appreciation for this sport and most people who frequent this blog understand that and are mature enough to deal with it.
Now, if hockey is a little too fast for you to follow, then there are sports which allow the necessary time between plays needed for you to keep up and they all have very fine fan blog sites for you as well.
If your simply applying for the position of “Blog Idiot”, I’m sorry but that position has been filled by a young lad from Livonia, Michigan already and he is more than doing a fine job with it.
Regardless, if you wish to visit or post, your welcome to do so…I look forward to your first comments that include cerebrally-induced rhetoric that display a sense of intellect and knowledge.

Well, another evening with our local “professional” hockey team. Vancover outskated us and certainly wanted the win more than we did. This seems to happen more oftewn than not.
Although we skated, we didn’t skate with any intensity, we didn’t seem hungry and we met out objective of under achieving.
How did we do it last night and nights in the past? 1. No one in front of the net in the offensive zone on a consistent basis.
I guess our forwards would rather not get hurt then set up a screen on the goalie. That says a great deal about sacrificing to win. We sure as hell were in front of the net when we beat Detroit, Buffalo and Washington.
Three forwards consistently behind the net scrambling for the puck. When they get it, who do they pass to?
Coming out of our zone all three forwards (except for Recci last night) bunched up along the boards on one side, much like am elementary school soccer match. How can you pass to someone when they are four feet away from you. If we are bunched up, so is the defense. That to me is a coaching issue and lack of discipline on the players part.
This team has outshot their opponents only a handfull of times this year, they do not play a full 60 minutes. In fact, when they beat Detroit, they had a lapse in the second period as well.UNTIL THIS TEAM PLAYS UP TO THEIR POTENTIAL FOR A FULL 60 MINUTES THEY WILL CONTINUE TO UNDERACHIEVE
You would have thought after beating Washington and Buffalo, this is a team that had the chance to come out and kick butt after the all-star break and what did they do? They never came out of their shell and remain unwilling to work hard to win on a consistent, night after night basis.
I have stopped listening to Odger and his sidekick after the games because their analysis is slanted and untruthful.
As far as I am concerned unless a miracle happens, this season is a washout. I am also afraid we are going to have to start, yet another multi-year rebuilding plan with a new GM and coach. I hope the new coach can instill some pride and determination in this group of under achievers and get them to walk their talk.

Rawhide? That sounds excruciating. I’m a big fan of Ice Puckey, the little girl’s game. I love to watch the pucksters skating around pretending to hit each other and chasing that little black, rat pellet. What could be more exciting? It is to sport what crocheting is to sewing. It’s a wondrous game that has everything -mayhem, action, fake fights, wild fans, crazed participants. Oh, wait, I’m sorry. I was thinking of the WWE. Anyway, I love Ice Puckey and I can’t wait to see the Trashers holding up their little cup.

If you guys don’t feed the trolls, they’ll leave.
As much as you guys wanna blame Lehtonen for these losses, I’m not. When he allows 3 goals or less, with the number of shots he sees…our offense really should be able to get 3 goals of our own each game. Kovy still doesn’t look like he’s used to the knee brace. You, me and Dupuis was probably our best player last night and I still think he should get a try on one of the top two lines.
Good seeing you guys last night Rawhide and uhhhh whatshisname??? :)

lew — well said about our beloved bumbling Bluelanders. I couldn’t agree more with you. And I’ve echoed many of the same sentiments in what I’ve written much of the year. I’ve even called out numerous players (including Craptain Holik) on the air only to be dismissed by Odgie and Danny…I know they don’t want to lose friends in the lockeroom but c’mon, gain some perspective and stop sugar-coating this team’s deficiencies!!
Until the upper management gets serious about winning (true accountability etc) by not only spending more money but also demanding better results, I am giving up on this team as a contender for anything let alone the 2nd round of the PO. I’ll still go to games and pull for them, but I know in my heart this team is headed in the same direction as the Falcons and Hawks…at least we’ve got this to look forward to:
Escobar Johnson Chipper Tex-Mex Frenchy McCann Diaz Kotsay?? Smoltzy/Glavine/Huddy etc.
Damn, what a line up!!
BTW RH, can’t you just put a block on David D00chbag’s IP addy??

So, last night was my first game this season in the arena. Very interesting stuff. I hope to be back later this month.
Random observations…
Vancouver beat the snot out of Kovalchuk because they determined that his entire line would not take a shot if they had any chance of putting it in his hands. Which highlights the rampant stupidity of that philosophy. If the Thrash strategists were smart, they’d use him as a decoy right now and put someone else on scoring duty. Or heck, give that entire line permission to take shots. He has a giant bullseye on his back — let’s use that to strategic advantage.
WTF, Dupuis? Nice goal, but how many times did you fail to even take a shot on a breakaway? Dupuis has nice speed, but poor hands and a performance issue — he needs both separate training to work on these issues and a play for his line which involves pairing him with a partner who can also break away and sink the shot.
Thorburn played like Boulton, and they both played like frickin’ idiot goons. Nice hits, sometimes — but also stupid, unnecessary penalties.
The Thrashers are tiny. It was particularly notable against the Canucks because their lines are somewhat homogeneous in size — and that size is about 4 inches and 20 pounds heavier than most of our lines. We have some nice, small players who are very talented, but we need to recruit some competent weight and size to complement those skills with muscle.
Kudos to Hossa for not completely dialing it in last night, though he was still not half as enthusiastic and on it as Recchi. And WTF is going on with Kozlov? I barely noticed he was out there, his playing was so unflashy and unenthusiastic.
Defense was better than they have been, but they didn’t protect Kovalchuk properly and they still take very few shots in comparison to the rest of the league. Multiple times defensemen got the puck and waited for a forward to pick it up — which is a choice on someone’s part, and stupid since it gives the other team’s defense time to set up and/or cut off people you need to support your rush to the goal. It makes sense from time to time. But it doesn’t make sense on every unpressured recovery.
Why was Klee on the ice so much? Why are the lines so uneven (other than the 4th line, which is pretty steadily mediocre and I don’t think gave up any goals), with multiple players pulling double and triple shifts?
The Thrashers were dragging early on. I still think they need more conditioning — they get outsprinted generally from the middle of the 2nd period on.
Something’s very mentally wrong with the team. They don’t work as well together as they should, and about half of the team is either playing consistently stupid or consistently lazy. We therefore need to do something to resolve that. I would suggest maintaining static lines with consistent changes, rewarding intelligence and passion (Perrin, Enstrom, Recchi), and punishing laziness and stupidity (Exelby, Holik, Boulton, Thorburn, White, Zhitnick).
P.S. — when can we trade Hossa? And can we get some large, highly-talented replacements?

Smoothie - nah,….I won’t block “Dee-Dee’s” IP address unless he starts being extreamely vulgar or abusive.
I think everyone on this blog now understands that he is a simple stooge.
When given the oportunity and invited to give any smart comments he proved unable to do so.
So, we now know we can just skip over any future post and not even waste our time with it.
Don’t worry….soon football season will gear up again and he will have the abilty to concentrate what ceribral activity he does have to that sport.

I was at the game last night and had a great time…until the 3rd period. The only time I see the thrashers play with intensity is when they are down or up by 1 with less than 3 minutes to play. They need to keep that intensity through the whole game. Also why is everyone on the team afraid to go in front of the net? Is there a new rule that NO Thrasher is allowed within 10 feet of a goalie unless he has a break away? I still believe this team can get to the playoffs but it will take full effort for an entire game.

Russian & Bob, the reason I doubt Hossa will be traded resides with Waddell’s belief that the Thrashers cannot repreat as Division Champions without Hossa. Therefore, trading him makes no sense to Waddell. The way I think Waddell sees it, once the Thrashers win the Division, and win a playoff series, that he’ll want to remain with the club and re-sign with us in the offseason.
I’m just stating what I think Waddell is thinking. Waddell believes in Blueland. And I’m certain that he doesn’t want to be remembered as The GM who traded away Hossa. Instead, if/when Hossa leaves, he’ll just say, “Hossa held all the cards. There was nothing I could do. Hossa was essential to our playoff run. No one was offering a player or players of Hossa’s caliber in return, so I kept him, rather than trading him.”
