Bruins: Take Two
The Thrashers will end the 2007 calendar year in BAH-Stan to take on the Bruins for the second time in less than 48 hours. Fresh off Saturday night’s 5-0 beating, I’m sure the only thing the Bruins would dread more then face the Thrashers again is go for a drive with Ted Kennedy behind the wheel thank you!
For the Boys of Blueland, today’s results have some major implications as to their standing in the conference bracket as well as the Southeast division. A regulation win would put them at 41 points and spring them over the Bruins as well as the idle Buffalo Sabres. The Islanders at 40 points play division-leading Carolina. So, if the Thrashers do prevail again they can find themselves alone in 8th place in the conference or two points off the division lead. The Thrashers still have a game in hand with the Hurricanes as well.
JINX-Your It!
Prior to Saturday night’s game, New England Sports Network’s Rob Simpson had the following to say:
“An entertaining statistical sidebar tonight. Barring a Thrashers shutout, which we don’t expect this evening, the next Bruin to score will score the 18,000th goal in Bruin’s history”.
Needless to say, he broke all hockey protocol and jinxed his team! The Hockey Gods do frown on such things, you know. Hey Rob, the stat still stands! So what say you make the same comment later today prior to the game!
Na-Na-Na-Na, Hey-Hey-Hey SHUT UP!
Apparently the NESN TV broadcasters that do the Bruins games, Jack Edwards and Andy Brickley, do not think the Atlanta hockey fans “get it” when it comes to NHL hockey. Why, you ask? Well, because when we were giving the Bruins an old-fashioned beat-down in Philips the other night, we failed to sing that insipid “Na-na-na-na, Hey-hey-hay Good-bye” song.
Oh, of course! How silly of us! And, why right here it is on page 102 of “America’s Single Standard for Hockey Orders and Lasting Etiquette” the hockey fan’s official guide of behavior that was obviously written by Edwards and Brickley. From it I quote, “If the home team gains a point advantage that is seemingly insurmountable, the home crowd shall sing the ‘Na-na-na-na, hey-hey-hey, good-bye’ song in an attempt to taunt and shame the visiting team”. Well, there you go needless to say a copy shall be distributed later this week at the next home game to all who attend.
So, if the Thrasher do indeed provide us with a repeat of last Saturday night’s smacking of the Bruins sometime around the middle of the third period, that’s the last period of an ice hockey game, (seeing that none of us down here know squat about hockey) stand up, face the north-northeast and, at the top of your lungs, shout it out loud!
“Na-na-na-na .Na-na-na-na Hey-hey-hey SHUT THE $%#@-UP .Jack and Andy!
Carolina X 2
The Thrashers travel to Carolina to play the Hurricanes Wednesday then on Friday will return home to play the Hurricanes. Hey, is there an echo in here?
Anyway, it just makes today’s game that much more important as they need to pick up the points now to be able to take advantage of the scheduling afforded us at this juncture. Take care of business in Bean town; take care of business against Carolina, and TA-DA its first place in the Southeast. How simple is that math?
Travel Itinerary
I’ll be traveling to sunny Florida on New Year’s Day, returning home Sunday in time for the Buffalo game. I’ll be working on the mid-season report card for our team and should be able to check in periodically depending on what brand of civilization I will be afforded, dial-up or hacking into an unlocked aerial signal, (oops, did I say that)?
Anyway, I have a very special guest blogger lined up for you in my absence. My cousin Cletus from Alabama-stan has accepted my invitation and is anxiously awaiting his chance to provide his insight.
Enjoy!

Rawhide: Hockey Gods,..Jinx?…Last time you detailed what a win would do for the Thrashers in the standings, well,….. we lost to the Panthers (Lump of Coal blog). Might want to look into that, or at least knock on wood.
So, I’m into top 10 lists of 2007 today. I’m picking Ilya’s hat trick against the Senators as my top one (although that “gasp” in St Louis was pretty good). I guess I have a short memory as nothing from last season still stands out.
Bloggers, how about your top momments of the last year, or this season?
So, did anyone see this article and get a bit nostalgic? text to be linked Loved the line about “not feeling the toes.”

Hooky Bob - My favorite moments from last season were that final home game, beating Tampa. And that first playoff game against the Rangers. We lost, but that was probably the most intense, electric environment I’ve ever been in. Then, from this season, the game against Florida when Hossa tied it with 3 seconds left, and Kovy won it a few seconds later. And the 3-2 win over Ottawa.

Hooky Bob, my favorite Thrashers moments were Game One and Game Two at Philips arena for our 1st-ever playoff games. I couldn’t have been MORE PROUD our Blueland “faithful.” There was nothing “cheap” or “contrived” about the playoff atmosphere at Blueland. We rocked the joint, both in the evening and afternoon (Game 2).
Why even mention it? There were rumors circulating that seats were available for those games and that they wouldn’t even sellout. Wrong. There were stories circulating that Ranger fans would DROWN US OUT. Wrong again. I counted six (6) NY Ranger jerseys in our building. Hardly the 10,000 that were projected. I couldn’t make out any “Let’s Go Rangers!” chants at Philips Arena. Do you recall any?
It was a totally rockin’ Blueland crowd, filled with blue jerseys. We proved ‘em all wrong.
Other games of note, the season finale shootout win by Atlanta over TB that made the Blueshirts our 1st round opponent, instead of the Bolts. We probably wish we’d gotten TB instead.
Definitely, getting Dupuis and Tkachuk last year were memorable things. DW was busy at the trade deadline. Tkachuk led all Thrashers with three playoff points in four games.
Also memorable, was the firing of Bob Hartley and the wide range of opinions that action generated at the blogs (Custance, Schultz, Rawhide.) Who can forget the 10-game losing streak which preceded it. I hate to say it, but that strange carom goal that trapped Moose behind the net in Game Two sticks out in my memory. Without that goal for the Blueshirts, I think Atlanta takes Game Two to even the series. Bygones.
And for the 1st half this year, definitely it has been the play of Tobias Enstrom and the arrival of Ilya Kovalchuk as our unofficial Captain and leader of this team. I was very pleased and a bit surprized to see Waddell go with the youth movement of Sterling, Enstrom, Little and Popovic, along with the call up of Pavelec, to start this season. I’m still waiting to see Jordan LaVallee this year.
For the first time in a while, I really feel like the Wolves are going to be a true pipeline for this team. I don’t know about Colin Stuart’s future here. But Pavelec will make it. Valabik should get his change, soon. Sterling and Little will be back. Haydar, if he can clear waivers, could return. I don’t about Krog, but LaVallee should at least get a look. Grant Lewis, defenseman, could be here next year. I like the idea of going with youth and speed, instead of aging vets, for the future. That said, my last choice is the arrival of Mark Recchi. See, this is the kind of “veteran,” obtained on the cheap, that any organization should pick up. It’s not like Waddell went out and got him in Free Agency, while overpaying for him.

Brendan—Welcome back, buddy! We missed your input. One of my favorite Thrashers games ever was 2 years ago against NJ Devils. I think we won 6-5, via a huge comeback in the 3rd. I think Patrik Stefan stuffed home the game winner…

Reading other bloggers reminiscing about the playoff atmosphere last year brings the tingles and shivers down my spine all over again. I’ve never felt more proud to be a Thrasher supporter than that wonderful day in April when the roof nearly came off the building 10 mins BEFORE the puck even dropped. The chant of “LET’S GO THRASHERS” reverberates in my head whenever the Thrashers play well and tease us with glimpes of how good they could really be…I want to feel that energy and excitement again.

LAC and hockeyfan that Savard video is priceless. Even the still-shot for the video is perfect with him looking so perplexed and scratching his head. What a maroon ~ “up 5-0 and they’re sending out their top guys. It’s like a kick in the you-know-whats.” Well, gee, Marc, what are we supposed to do - play our fourth line for 30 minutes straight? Maybe youse guys should just play better, ya think? And he’s sooo excited to be facing us again today. Heh, I hope the team can make him eat those words too.
I feel for the B’s - they have lost some of their best players to injury - likely for the season in some cases. That’s tough on any team. But even so, they played like crap and payed for it. Reap what you sow as they say.

Thrasher Ryan, thank you. It’s good to be back. I had a lot of fun in sunny Florida. We had perfect weather the whole time. I guess it rained here quite a bit. We got home in the midst of a downpour. But that’s good! We needed that rain. I hope most of it fell on Lake Lanier! And for those of you who just put down freshly lain sod!
I can’t feel badly for Boston right now. Between the year BC had, the Celtics rippin’ up the NBA, the Bruins in the playoff mix, the Red Sox winning the World Series in a sweep, again, and the Patriots on the verge of a 4th Super Bowl win in seven years, with a 16-0 regular season record, tell me again how I should feel “bad” for that city??

J and Brendon: What can I say cept…”Thanks for the memories.” Looking forward, …the Recchi pickup comment hit the nail on the head.
ThrasherRyan: If that was the game in which Slava kept poking at an apparently covered puck (maybe a late whistle) to get the tying goal,..It is one of those “too good to be true” memories. Thanks.
So, shifting gears, if goals were in anyway correlated to allstar votes, I gotta think Ilya would be a starter. Perhaps the NHL ought to give some weighting to stats like that.
Go Blue.

Also, those Summer blogs were good, where we discussed possible trades (Hossa), free agent pickups, both early on and late in the offseason. We talked about the “cap,” and Atlanta’s budget. We covered Hartley, the goaltender rotation, Holik, the possible new Captains, Kozlov’s contract extension, Andy Sutton’s not returning, and the potential crop of rookies this year, etc. The offseason is one of the most critical times of the whole year, aside from the playoffs themselves.
Russ was right about his projected point totals for the Thrashers. This team just can’t have any more 0-3-0 efforts and think it’s going to the postseason, unless everyone else self-destructs down the stretch. All those teams above us play each other … and those points have to get divvied up SOMEHOW. I still wish the NHL would go to that “W-L, games up and games back” standings. Down the stretch, when TB beats Carolina in overtime or a shootout, both teams get points from that. It’s just easier to know to you need to root for Canes loss and a Thrasher win to get the division title. I know. Just like phone lines, the Internet, the mail, and the Interstates, it goes BOTH directions.

they are turning around. Waddel is a pretty good coach. I feel he ought to stay there and hire a GM. Enstrom can move. He is the best D-man this team has ever had, offense wise. I am still not sold on Lehts as an elite netminder eventhough he does have a shutout through 1 period.
Yanks will always think that they are better than the South, pparticularly those in the NE. It rubs a lot of Yanks wrong that we have a hockey team and that, right now, our economy is better than theirs. That’s why they feel so Gosh-darn culturally superior to everyone. Either, you move up there, or you just deal with it.
Longterm, the Thrash will be good and solid in Atlanta. It won’t do as good as UGA or the Bravos, but they’ll find a market. But the bottom line is those Northerners will always feel superior.

Rawhide, we are going to either sink or swim with Kari Lehtonen. And now, per Custance’s blog, Waddell has decreed that Lehtonen will get the lion’s share of the remaining starts. So, this is now more than just “Brendan theory” that Lehtonen is the #1 goalie in Atlanta. Of course, laughing, having said that, nothing prevents Kari from playing himself out of a job. If Waddell decides, as is his right, to call up Pavelec and ride him the rest of the way, then that’s what happens.
Have fun in Florida, Rawhide. It’s a fun place. I just came from there.

Man, do you think the parents Stuart are upset at being out of the country now? Or are the stateside Stuart brothers p** at their other brother for dragging Mom & Pop away to go see him play overseas? :)
The second two periods (in addition to a reappearance of the long-dormant Bruins offense) showed a return to the form that had placed Tim Thomas (surprisingly) in the league leaders category for the first part of the season. He came up with some HUGE saves for the B’s, Let-one-in definitely showed some cracks that weren’t there the other night, and the Thrashers, as a whole, I felt, played a pretty sloppy game. Even in the first the B’s had some definite opportunities that went just wide or were stopped. Still though, would love to see these two teams match up come April. Could be alot of fun, especially since I imagine both teams may have some roster tweaks between now and then (even if, in Boston’s case, it’s just a return of many key injured vets).
Saw a pretty good representing of Thrashers fans in the crowd. I never mind when any non-new york away fans come in for a game. Most of them are there to have a good time. Rangers/Yankees/Mets/Nets/Knicks/Jets fans though…. yuck.
For the record, whomever asked regarding my comments on the jumbo action in Atlanta, it was actually commented on by one of the Bruins beat writers, but let’s just say I have a vested interest in game presentation up here.
Nice talking with you all. Anytime you want to beat on the Habs or Devils, by all means be my guest. See you in March!

BruinsBri - What did you guys pump into the Thrashers locker room up there between the 1st and 2nd periods??? The whole team played like crud after the 1st period, Kari included, although he isn’t soley to blame.
I was thinking about the Stuart parents today…being a parent of two son’s and remembering the first time they played on the ice together. I bet they are a proud as can be, but sorry they missed a game that they both scored!

I wish Hossa would $hit or get off the pot already. This lack luster play of his is really getting old. If he had the same fire and intensity as last year I bet the standings would be different. Boo F’ing hoo I didn’t get a top tier center for my line. You’ve got an A on your sweater play like it means something. Gees the year before last I thought Kovy was acting like a prima donna but hoss has the cake on that one now!!
If he wants out I say trade him now and get this distraction behind us then lets see where we go from there. If he wants to stay then sign the fricking contract already and lets make a run for another division title then see where then chips fall.

That NJD game Stefan tied it to force OT….23 March 2006 It is a game I will always remember…seats next to the ATL bench (toatally had plexiglass hi-5 with Stefan after his clutch goal)…got to see Brodeur in person, see-saw game with plenty of dramatics-then to top it off I found out I was going to be a Father that night! It was a great game.
I also remember the HOSSA Game…that was when I realized that Bluelanders aren’t your average ATL sports fan…these people were actually involved in the game!
Also that 1st playoff game-super intense energy even Linda “#1 Rangers Fan” Cohn from ESPN had to give it up to Blueland: [sic] “As far as these stories of distant and uninformed fans in Atlanta, I didn’t see any at Phillips arena; the crowd was raucus, the fans were cheering up ‘til the final buzzer. ‘Blueland’ is for real, and so are Atlanta hockey fans”
Also, Big Bob’s “pool shot” goal from last season sticks out, as does #17’s tip-in of an X point shot-#17 looked positively giddy, I think it was his first NHL deflection goal.
Bad loss today, Shake it off and enjoy times square boys-you got a hard row to hoe when you get back home!

Also, full marks to Tim Thomas on his work today, he definitely made a huge impact for his team…His glove save on #17 from in between the circles, about 5:45 left in the 3rd, that save sealed it. You could see whatever energy that had been built up (great shift by Hoss line just before) was lost. I think you have to root for this guy-except when he plays us…He’s what? 33, 34? Basically in his 2nd NHL season, he doesn’t play the percentages-he plays the shooter! Silly reflexes, plays deep in net he’s just ballsy-now if he can quit doing that against us, I’ll be happy.

Hi Rawhide. Pin this loss squarely on Waddell! Moose should have been in goal. KL was sharp early especially on late breakaway. Offense staked him to 2-0 lead. KL focus and concentration went to Hell after first period! Physically and mentally fatigued. Bad Waddell call! KL MUST BE PULLED AFTER THIRD GOAL! That is not open to debate. Does not matter if in first period or closing minutes. When KL allows three goals he is brain-dead! Thrashers needed this one. BADLY! So disappointed. Do not get me started on soft goals. Will cut KL some slack since he should NEVER have been between pipes in Boston! Will never condone number of goals allowed. Anyone agree? Happy New Year!

Well, CBC got just what it wanted. Sid Crosby winning the game. It was “an event,” to be sure. The pace the was wayyy too slow. It took more than 3.5 hours to play that game. Every 10 minutes, they had to resurface the ice. Even in the OT, they switched ends after 2:30, to make it fair to both sides.
It felt like there was six intermissions. The ice constantly needed repairing. It’s probably a good thing that they only do this once every so often. Someone who went to a “Bowl Party” and taped the game from 1:00 to 4:00, missed the ending, which came at 4:37 PM.

AJC, your picture of Brad McCrimmon could be updated a little bit. The Thrashers are wearing their “retro” Ullllltimate Warrior logo jerseys, a sure sign the photo is dated. But the “tell tale” give-a-way is that Scott Mellanby is in the photo, wearing the Captain’s “C.”

I went to a Hawks game a few years ago and at halftime they had this lady who somehow kept changing dresses when this guy would hold a blanket or something over her for a second. Coolest magic trick I ever saw live. That disappearing act the Thrashers did after the 1st intermission was a close second…
PJ - I definitely miss it. And they loved it up there for that outdoor game. Even though it seemed like they were asking the question every five minutes, it is true that people just loved the whole outdoor element of pond hockey. I had a rink in my backyard growing up and I really loved watching that game yesterday.
Brendan - I was recording it and noticed the yellow light wasn’t on for the shootout. I hit record and technically had to record the first 20-40 minutes of the next show. I always record Thrashers Live for the same reason, if the game ever goes into OT you miss it on the dvr.
This brings me to my question for the dvr users, does anyone have it hooked up to their phone line? Tivo or a dvr? It used to be required, but now you don’t need to. I don’t use a landline anymore so I won’t. But apparantley (and this is what I would like someone here to confirm) you can update show listings instantaneously to record live events that run past the original end time. Can anyone provide some input on this?

Brian - SHHhhhhhhhhh, the Mrs. still thinks it’s totally coincidental! I’m getting some serious points from this!!!
Now, I enlisted the help of a brother-in-law who lives down here…he found a sports/bar/restaurant that has center-ice an is very Thrasher-friendly….so, I’ve offered to take everyone out to eat Friday night and…SHAZAM…will you look what is playing on the big screen!!!
Boy, how “lucky” is THAT????

Brian- TiVo will accept a USB 802.11”b” connection (or at least early versions will)…as far as the motorola HD DVRs Comcast uses: They can be updated by our central office (call in ask for a “refresh” hit); however the re-set hit (your 2nd option) will take 15-20 minutes to fully download.
I’d love to see our guys really take it to Carolina tonight; they are struggling with consistency as well…even though it’s more in the mold of one-to-two game sets as oppossed to ATL’s binge-loosing/binge-winning ways.
I’d also love to see KL get the start against Ward; it would be HUGE for him to beat Ward-I don’t think he’s ever done it…not there were some games were KL deserved the W and didn’t get it, but it seems like KL has definite issues about going up against Ward-He’s the guy that coaches used as motivational example for KL during last offseason’s conditioning/training camp for KL
GO BLUE!!!
P.S. Even with updated listings, you should always record the next 30mins of a live game because the networks only allow for the 5-min OT period itself, not the commercial breaks etc….I understand that TiVo’s latest upgrade addresses this; but they are still bugs.

There is absolutely no reason the Thrashers should lose this game. Give the Moose a 4 goal pad, and he will give you a win. 4-2 Thrash.

Anybody else watching this? 1st period thoughts: Hoss ate his wheaties today; that last shift was basically CAR Vs. Hoss against the boards… Hey! we got a PP!… OMG #17 IS THE MAN!!!! WHAT A GOAL!!! Did anyone on CAR have a chance on that rush??? WOW!
I wonder if Recchi can keep this pace up-or will we see Stuart spotting in during the 2nd and 3rd???
2nd Period:
Good energy-even after some questionable calls… This Stuart guy continues to impress-lots of energy haven’t seen any glaringly “dumb” plays… Slater may just have to sit once he’s healthy (whaddya think?)… The more I see of Dupuis, the better I like it-I hope we can resign #9 to something a little longer this off-season…. Love the pass/shot off the wall-that Recchi goal was a little bit more dificult than it looked in real-time…under the pads with a bouncing puck-THAT is why we picked him up.
Noticing our D seems to be collapsing to the puck side a little too soon-or CAR has detected a wrinkle because they keep putting the puck to a good space coming into the zone…. Zhitnik continues his upward trend… Our D other than over-commiting at point of attack looks better than they have-we’re coming out of the corner with the puck. That must continue. I like what I see out of Thorburn tonight… I like the way focus was maintained during the waning minutes-good forecheck, responsible play… -End period-=Good
3rd Period: Good puck movement to start… We’ve got to get the middle of the neutral zone more congested-CAR is carrying too much speed into our zone …Which is why Klee gets called and it’s now a 1-goal game. GRR… Moose shouldn’t feel bad about that one… 3rd CAR goal=crap…That over-pursuit of the puck just bit us on the fanny 3 white shirts on 1.5 red=wide-open Ladd for the GTG! That’s two goals from directly in front of Moose…those guys should’ve had somebody hanging off them or more preferably be on their seats… 4th ATL goal=Sweeeet THAT is what hockey people are talking about when they say “so-and-so got outworked” Further evidence for #17 getting the Hart Trophy AGAIN WITH LATE PENALTIES!!!—This shouldn’t be a surprise to Le Thrash-the calls will always go against us until we sweep Les Habitants in the playoffs. 4th CAR goal=Damn dude. Did the puck bounce out of his glove? Otherwise pin that one squarely on Moose-should’ve frozen the puck. 3min left-Where’s Hoss? I see a guy wearing his number, but this other guy is listless…has CAR been beating on him that much…? 2min. left-Beast has shortened the bench…X is out there w/Klee…Holik is out there all the time…finally see the regular #17 line…Give it up for the CAR fans-they really gave their ream a boost. End 3rd-Beast will be chewing @ss…and he should be.
OT: Goodness I didn’t realize how badly we’ve been outshot tonight…Moose=30sv Ward=8sv…no pinche bueno! White looks a little to happy to let #17 do the scoring-thatdrop pass killed the rush 3:30 OT-WHAT A SAVE!!!! THEY BETTER WIN THIS FOR MOOSE! 2:50 OT-Where’s Hoss??? 1:10 OT- FInally we get a call 0:45 OT-There’s Hoss-#17 1st Star Moose 2nd Star #17 3rd Star what a beauty pass!
GO BLUE !!! #17 OWNS YOU!!!

Big “3-point swing” tonight. But, uhh, there’s really no excuse for blowing the full four (4) points when you take a 3-1 lead into the 3rd period. Even in an away barn. No matter WHAT the shots on goal may have been.
So, is Cam Ward the goaltender of his generation? He is a former Conn Smythe winner and Stanley Cup Champion. This is the thing about goalies, isn’t it? I wonder if there are ‘Canes fans thinking, “Let’s trade him while he still has ‘some value.’”
Bobby Holik … is driving me crazy. He gets that 4th goal, an absolutely critical goal, then takes a penalty that allows Carolina to get the equalizer. Too many penalties. Too many PPG’s given up. Atlanta gave up three (3) third period goals. I bet Don Waddell wasn’t happy for an extended period of time after the Hossa OT goal. He knows his team handed the ‘Canes a very PREVENTABLE point.
In the VERSUS Post-Game Show, they ended the show with the question, “Will Hossa re-sign in Atlanta?” Brian Engblom’s answer: “No, Hossa will not be back. Atlanta WANTS him back and are desperately trying to do that, but no, they’ll have to trade him so that they don’t wind up losing him for nothing.” Keith Jones’ answer was, “Yes, Hossa will be re-signed by Atlanta over the Summer, but not before they pick up a couple of 1st round draft picks for him at the trade deadline, ‘cuz that’s what he’s worth. They’ll “rent him” to a team that really needs Hossa to give them the best shot at winning a Cup. Then Atlanta will get him re-signed in the offseason.” Enstrom’s rebuttal, “I guess that’s possible.” Keith Jones’ retort, “That’s why I said it.”

I’ll take Jonsey’s half-full analysis…I’m ok with us getting some first rounders and a guy who’s scored 20 more than twice….which is what DW should ask for…or Hudler from the deadwings if Hoss goes there.
Russian-thanks…everybody else apologies for the novel.
GO BLUE !!!

By the way, Florida lost to NJ, 3-2, so Atlanta slides into 2nd place in the Southeast division. There was a nice 3-point swing tonight on Carolina. We took two-points while denying Carolina one. Our record on the back end of “back-to-back” games is 1-6-1.
Vote for Kovy. You’ve got about 15 minutes left to get those votes in. Don’t forget Enstrom, too. By adding in Kozlov and Hossa, you help Kovy climb higher in the standings versus his closest competitors.

Your welcome, PJ. Keep those prayers coming. The team has a winning record when you give one. I like reading novels, Tony C. So apologies necessary. No attention deficit disorder here. Post as much as you want.

It was nice to see Brad Larsen get on the scoresheet again. Hossa is a -9 right now. I didn’t see that coming. A four-point night for Kovy. Enstrom was a +10 less than two weeks ago. He’s a +4 now. Klee is +1. Our blueline has only chipped in seven of the team’s 107 goals coming into this game.
