Breakfast In Bed Blogging

Ah, Christmas weekend! I have looked forward to this morning more then I have Christmas. I knew I would be able to sleep in and lounge around in the flannel sheets, sipping the morning brew as I perused the cyber-morning paper. Ahhh…all is right with the world! And, just to show you all just how much I like you, I decided to share this morning with all of my friends in the blogosphere, just don’t hog the covers or spill anything on the bed. The divine Mrs. R will not like that one little bit!

With that precautionary note out of the way, here are a few topics for discussion:

Breaking The Back of the Back-to-Back Bug-A-Boo

Once gain, the Thrashers look to take on the challenge of playing games on consecutive nights. Montreal pays us a visit tonight and then the team will jet their way to St. Louis to take on the Blues. The last time Atlanta won both ends of back-to-backers was last April 6 & 7 when they won the Southeast Division title in Carolina then beat Tampa Bay the next night to close out the regular season. Prior to that was last December 26 & 27 with a 2-1 win over the Lightning and a 4-2 victory over Pittsburgh. Two wins this weekend would really do the team well, both in the standings and psychologically.

Spotlight on Slates

Hey Jimmy, in my previous blog I jokingly said that Craig Custance should do a write up on you seeing that Alexei Zhitnik’s play has improved greatly just after the one on him. Steve McCarthy’s play has been vastly better and I do believe our fine beat writer recently produced a piece on him as well, though I don’t know which came first…the article or the improved play. Well, lo and behold what appeared last night, a fine piece of journalism on you. So, Jimmy, this is the weekend you break through and net that first goal of the season seeing that I’ve called for, and Craig has produced, the write up. No pressure.

Kari Back ‘Tween the Pipes & Looking Better ‘Tween the Ears

Kari Lehtonen will be back in goal for tonight’s game against Montreal. His past two starts have been things of beauty and here is hoping it continues. The team can deal with giving up 2 goals per game and if that average is carried throughout the rest of the year we will be just fine with that, thank you very much! Kari’s excellent play actually started last Saturday in Ottawa when he took over for Hedberg and stopped 18 of 20 shots. Counting that game he has stopped 78 of 84 shots over two-plus games which calculates to a .929 SV%.

A Glance at the Standings

OK, now a quick look at where we are at this juncture….33 points places us in the third spot of the division, three behind Florida and six behind the front-running ‘Canes. We have a game in hand with the Panthers and two in hand with Carolina. Both are in action tonight as well. The Thrashers sit in the 13th position in the conference but are just three behind Pittsburgh and the afore mentioned Panthers who reside in the eight spot.

French Lesson for the Nasty Nesters

Ok guys, tonight, considering who our opponents are tonight, the chant is, ”Huey….Huey…Huet…VOUS SUCEZ”!

OK, now, everyone out of bed! I’ll see you all in Blogland at about six or so!

Now the good news is that with all those teeth missing, when he is done playing hockey he could retire to Arkansas and fit in just fine!

PJ & Alan - thank you for the posts, but fortunately this is not a big of a problem as it seems. Look at the times of certain posts and you’ll notice they all come at the same time…

GREAT GAME TONIGHT

Again, very little to complain about. Wish we didn’t give up that second goal, we could’ve avoided it if we just got the clear. Hossa somehow had a multi-point game?!?!?! But, Recchi gets another point, you gotta love that. Zhitnik had a cheap penalty but played great. And Kari came up HUGE.

OSHI— I responded to the wrong person. Oh well, I was paying attention to the game while posting, so maybe that can be forgiven? :) That game was a nailbiter. I wonder if Kari’s glove came undone before or after the puck hit it. Nonetheless, he did a stellar job on the shootout, and I’m happy for the win.

Now let’s win it tomorrow night in St. Louis.

By Brian

Alan - I thought Elliot made a big deal out of nothing, it looked like Kari just had the trapper out too far as if the shot was going wider and it left an opening next to his body (that it got through). It was a rocket shot and he made too many other saves to worry about that one. I was more upset at the D there anyway. I’ll take a .949 sv% and only 2 GA (not to mention that great poke check in the SO).

Yeah, I saw the puck, and it looked like it bounced off the wrist. I’m happy with Kari’s performance, but was saddened at the goal. But the defense was obviously missing in action during that power play.

Now watching Detroit beat Minnesota. What can I say? I have to rep the home town. They’re currently overpowering Minnesota with a SOG count of 42-17. And there’s still about 8 minutes of game left, too.

Great game tonight. In fact the last few games have been enough to drag me (CM) out of my anti-blogger cave. I was able to watch the last 2 games in their entirety and there is no doubt the Thrashers played the best that I have ever seen them play. From what I recall one of the goals in the Thursday night game may have been soft, but with the W I guess you let that slide. Tonight The Kid was great again, and I agree that the defense (HAVELID) was absent there and essentially gift wrapped that one for the CanadIENS. Again though, Hoss and Slava made it right by netting two absolute beauties. Huet was awesome tonight but was effectively schooled by those two in the SO. Good stuff!

Here’s hoping they keep this rolling for a while, but especially tomorrow night. I think it would be huge for the team, obviously, but especially for Kari (assuming he gets the start).

Merry Christmas Thrashers and Merry Christmas Blueland!!

December 22, 2007 11:09 PM | Link to this

The Thrashers are playing their best stretch of hockey this season. Hopefully they can keep it up and ene their back-to-back jinx in St. Louis tomorrow. I’d give Moose the start tomorrow despite how well Kari is playing for two reasons. 1)Obviously the back-to-back games and 2)the game is against a non-conference opponent. I know the Thrashers need every point they can get, but at least a game against a team out west isn’t a 4 point swing game against someone you might be competing for a playoff spot against down the road.

Merry Christmas to all!

GO THRASHERS!!!!!

Thrashers answer a 4-game losing streak with three of its best performances on the year (TB, OTT, and MTL). That’s precisely why I posted, and kept on voting in the AJC poll, that Don Waddell should STAYYYY behind the bench. I repeat, “Who ELSE but Waddell is going to get MORE out of these players?” I have not “waivered” from this stance, amidst being outshouted by the gallery.

Waddell controls their contracts. He decides if they get renewed or not. He decides if they get TRADED or not. It’s HIS RECOMMENDATION to the ownership about SALARY for the players.

Waddell always finds a way out. He’s “Houdini.” He’s the “Teflon” GM. Just when you think he’s “done-for-sure,” look what’s happened? Go ahead, tell me these three (3) wins vs. Tampa Bay, Ottawa, and Montreal were “cruddy” games, where we got lucky? We’re back to .500. Remember, last year’s Conference Champions, Ottawa, didn’t get OVER .500, definitively, until December 27th. That’s a fact.

Now, it’s up to Waddell and the Thrashers to get above .500 and stayyyy there. That’s the NEXT challenge. Atlanta is within striking-distance of Carolina. Tonight, they gained two-points on TB, and a point on both Florida and Washington.

Punkjunque, keep these prayers coming.

sipping warm cup of cup coffee…still between the flannel sheets - Still impressed with that game last night! What a week of Thrasher hockey!

St. Louis is playing the tail end of a back-yo-backer this evening as well following their 4-1 win in BAH-stahn yesterday….maybe we can catch ‘em napping. They are a good squad this year…

Brendan - I like all the points you make about keeping DW behind the bench. I make no issue with any of them at all….and to be honest, I feel that is what the ASG will do for the remainder of the season.

But, I still would like a full-time coach in here, (whether it’s McCrimmon, Anderson, Quinn, fill-in-the-blank)…to allow DW to be a full-time GM 100% of the time.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t want the Thrashers to hire just anybody for the sake of getting someone…that would be a disaster. But I just can’t help but think that there will be some deals to make in the next 2 months and I want DW’s focus there.

I may be in the minority in that thinking, I know…so be it.

Either way, if he does continue to wear both hats then I hope that “one” deal that’s out there, (whatever that one may be), doesn’t slip through the cracks.

By five_hole

December 23, 2007 9:21 AM | Link to this

I say we fire DW as GM and keep him as coach. He would make more money as a coach and the team certainly responds to him.

Secondly, I’d like to give a big shout out to Pittsburgh, for giving us our early Christmas present, Recchi. It’s really nice to have scoring ability from 2 lines.

Kari stood on his head last night. And I didn’t think either goal he gave up was soft. Sometimes, you have to give credit to the opposition for doing their job; they did. Which brings me to my point; Kari is a much better goalie than he is given credit for. I was really looking forward to watching Huet play last night. In warmups, I noticed that he wasn’t sharp; everyone practicing shooting was beating him. I think Huet is made by the defensemen (Markov, Hamerlik) in front of him. And I think this was in evidence by the shootout. We scored twice and they were stoned twice. And Kari has an excellent record in shootouts, in part because he’s used to playing with no defense in front of him.

By Rawhide

December 23, 2007 9:40 AM | Link to this

Five_Hole - Amen to your early Christmas present comment! Recchi’s presents has been a stabilizing force giving us two solid scoring lines.

In the six games he has been here our G/G average is 2.83…bringing the season G/G average to 2.69. That ties us for 14th best in the league, 0.01 behind Nashville for 13th.

The Thrashes offense has been steadily improving over the past month, altogether…at Thanksgiving time their G/G average was 2.56 which placed them 22nd in the NHL.

This is very good seeing that the team’s GA/A hasn’t improved much over the same time period. A month ago we were giving up goals at a 3.39 pace, today it’s 3.34. However….the past three games it’s been 2.00. So, hopefully that trend will continue.

Maybe we can get a “Thank You” card to send to the Penguins front office. Very appropriate, I think, seeing that they are picking up half of Recchi’s tab!

PJ - Keep the prayers a-coming! I truely beleive that you have the ear of The Great Thunder Maker in the Sky!!!

Brian - Please continue to conduct the choir in “amening” PJ’s petitions with the Hallelujah Chorus…

However, Kari’s first save is the Frozen Moment on NHL.com!

Up in Winston-Salem for Christmas so I had to live and die with Dan Kamal on the internet last night. It was fun…even my dad turned down the volume on the Canes / TB game to listen to Kamal at the end of the 3rd!

Just watched the hi-lites of the game and Kari’s shoot-out save on Kostitsyn was absolutely SICK!!! In fact, he did resemble Hasek in the SO (see Darren Eliot). As for Huet not being sharp, I don’t know about that as he robbed Kovy twice, White (from Kovy) on the doorstep and Kozzie in the slot (oh yeah, from Kovy) in the third. From the hi-lites, he was standing on his head.

By the way, it seems like Kovy keeps getting better and better with his passing. And now that Recchi is here to provide the physical, grinding presence on that line, I think Kovy may end up with over 50 assists for the first time in his career. It’s just a shame that Kovy won’t get to start at the ASG here in Atlanta…he is so deserving.

I think I may change my handle to Cold Stone Ki-Ilya since he is absolutely killing the Eastern Conf.

Brendan — very salient analysis regarding Teflon Don. As long as he can hand Beast the reins at the end of Feb to focus on deadline deals, we’ll be just fine eh? Did you catch that wild Sabres / Flyers game on Center Ice? Can’t believe the Sabs gave up 2 SHG in the same PP!!

Rawhide — doesn’t morning coffee just taste better after a Thrashers win?? I know mine does!!

By Brendan

December 23, 2007 12:53 PM | Link to this

JSmooth, I most certainly did! That Sabres-Flyers game was the BOMB. It had a little bit of everything. Special teams goals, last second “heroics,” and the whole Briere/Biron vs. their former team accentuated by a SHOOTOUT!

Five_Hole, I second the Christmas card idea to Michel Therrien in Pittsburgh for the gift of Recchi. Point of fact, other than the 4-0 whitewash against Toronto, Recchi has had points in every single game. He’s got six points (3G, 3A) in six games.

Gang, “Team Thrashers” is -87 on the plus-minus. Guess who makes up 47.1 percent of that total? Give yourself a gold star if you said Holik, -12, Zhitnik, -12, and McCarthy, -17. That’s a combine -41, folks. UN-good.

But before you think I’m going to pin it all on them, “Star” players like Hossa (-7), Todd White (-6), Kozlov (-5) and Kovalchuk (-5) aren’t pulling their weight either. Point of fact, only four Thrashers are above the “Mendoza” line, and two of them play for the Chicago Wolves (Little, +2, Hayder, +4). Nic Havelid is our plus-minus leader, at +6. Toby Enstrom is next, at +5.

RAWHIDE, Atlanta is only six (6) games away from the MIDPOINT of the season. So, you’re probably preparing your mid-season “report card.” I heard Darren Eliot talking about how Marian Hossa is averaging a point a game, yet everyone seems to think he’s having a “down” year.

Well, isn’t it true that he’s having a “down” year, by Hossa standards? I believe he had a 100-point season last year. But that’s not the biggest of my concerns about Hossa.

It’s sad to think about, but I’ll drop this BOMB, the “posterchild” for those who Don’t believe in in BLUELAND is #18, Marian Hossa. Way to squash the P.R. campaign! If Hossa really DID “Believe in Blueland,” he’d have already re-signed by now, and not put his fellow teammates, coaches, GM, team ownership, and the Thrashers fans through a whole year of the “murkiness” of his future here in Atlanta.

Of course, there’s room for “spin” control. “Ohh, he’s waiting to see how the “coaching situation” will be resolved. “Ohh, he’s waiting to see what the trade deadline will bring.” “Ohh, he’s waiting to see what Center might be coming for his line this Summer.” “Ohhh, he’s just trying to secure the best possible dollars for his next contract.” “Ohh, he’s waiting to see if a “new GM” is coming.”

Truthfully, the more I think about it, the more I’m thinking that we can find three (3) guys who score 23, 18, and 16 goals, respectively, to fill out a whole line in exchange for the $8 million in cap hit that we’d surely take on if the organization re-signed Hossa. That’s 57 goals, folks. Will Hossa score 57 goals for us next season? Will he score ANY in the playoffs?

A 23-goal scorer should cost about $3.3 million. An 18-goal scorer should run around $2.4 million. And a 16-goal scorer should run around $1.9 to $2.1 million, depending on who it is. That’s your $7.8 million in cap space. Food for thought.

Brendan The calculation might be correct but you will get the points production using 3 rosters spot while keeping Hossa will net you a little less production but taking only one roster spot leaving you room to fill the other tow with those you mention and getting a better results. bad english I know but then again, english is not my promary language. Also keep in mind that having Hossa and Kovalchuk on two seperate line will force the opponent to play defensive differently (think Sakic and Forsberg in the ol Colorado golden era). Without Hossa, you just need to keep checking Kovalchuk and the Thrashers will be done. Also it’s easier to keep someone who already know “the System” instead of bringing three new guys and have to rework the chemistry again. Interesting note, Hossa is averaging more then a point a game if we just forget the first 9 games of the season. In fact he would be in pace for over 100 pts if not for the first 9 game of the season. BTW, anyone notice our Captain start being himself and playing the game we know he can since we got Recchi? It’s still not worth 4.25 mil but still way better then pre-recchi.

Happy Holiday everyone ;)

I think we were pretty lucky to win last night. We have the one random amazing game against Ottawa, where we outshoot them by 15, then back to our old tricks by getting outshot by 10+ and allowing almost 40 shots. We CANNOT keep doing that! Montreal botched so many opportunities last night that had absolutely nothing to do with us. Now somehow we’re just 6 points out of the #2 spot in the conference! Unbelievable!

I say start Kari tonight, then the team has 3 days off til Thursday vs the Rats.

Jsmooth - nice points about Recchi. All this time people are calling for more speed on his line, but give him a grinder with some touch and that seems to work best. Oh yeah, that’s not dyslexia, you just eat too much ice cream.

Five-hole & others who wish to send a greeting along - I think it would be much more beneficial to send a Christmas card to the Penguins Mgt via c/o Mark Recchi at the Thrashers address and let him see that. Talk about a hometown, fan-friendly thank you…

Brendan - yeah, some of our stars may have a bad +/-, but what about all those PP pts they are accumulating? I’ll take a guy who has 20 PP pts, is a -10 over a guy with 2 PP pts and is a +2 (given they are both 1st line players, not comparing a scoring winger to a checking line center). Point being: don’t focus on 1 stat only otherwise we are paying Andy Sutton $3mm this year because of all his blocked shots.

puckjunque - I hope to blast out another hallelujah tonight.

J - In the words of Thomas Jefferson, “I’m a firm beleiver in luck. And the harder I work, the more of it I seem to have”.

Now, while it’s true that Montreal had a ton of missed chances, the fact that the Thrashers worked hard and kept themselves in the position to win it at the end speaks for it’s self.

Oh, and let’s not forget the fact that we have a game against the CBJs Wednesday.

I would start Moose tonight and give Kari 3 days rest. But that’s just me. If DW decides to stay with the hot hand….then at least it’s a logical decision…

Also, two points tonight brings us to 4 behind the lead with a game in hand…..and keep in mind the frst two games in ‘08 are against Carolina.

RStroz & PJ - Report card on ME??? I did not see that in my contract! Regardless,….remember how much I LOVE you and hold you dear in my heart!!! I think your two of the best-est-est people in the whole wide world!! smoootch…smootch

Brian — you’re right, I probably was thinking about ice cream, but I must confess, I’m a Bruster’s man, not Coldstone! I’m a huge Recchi fan already and it’s only been what, 7 games? Hope we smack the Pens right in the mouth when the come back to town…with “Rex” getting the game winner at the end of the 3rd for good measure.

Rawhide — you crack me up! I thought I was the only person I know who ever used the word nectar! Makes me think of a Dan Fogelberg song I know…okay, that really makes me weird. RIP Dan! Anyway, we need to line up some puck watching at the Ice Forum…I miss those weeknights watching the kids practice while I drink a Labatt upstairs overlooking the ice.

R Stroz — c’mon man, our fearless blog leader is even updating his stuff on a Sunday morning in bed! That’s gotta count for a few marks in the plus column. In fact, I’d say he’s blogging like a Hall of Famer (especially compared to ol’ Vecsey)!

PJ — Keep the prayers coming and make sure to tell the man upstairs to bless Kari with a continued sharp focus and lucid determination! I have a feeling KL will keep us chanting tonight with a hard fought 3-2 road win.

Let’s go Blue!!!

Mark - nice pickup, but those national ones aren’t always accurate. I would trust Craig first & foremost, then our broadcast team (although you don’t hear from them more than a 1/2 hour before the puck drops) and take everything else with a grain of salt. Perfect example, when I posted Kari’s save % above, the game was already over and it still had Hedberg listed as playing…

Rawhide and Crew-Since it seems everyone is in attendance I want to let you all know that the package arrived yesterday. Thank you very much—a very unnecessary but much appreciated gesture. The cookies were a huge hit. They went very quickly. I did have some trouble explaining why I had pom-poms…

Thanks again everyone.

Brian, Recchi got another point (on the PPG by Kovalchuk)! That’s seven in seven games! Since he got here, Recchi has tallied a point in every single game except the 4-0 loss to the Maple Leafs. Point taken about the plus-minus, Brian. I love that Kovalchuk has a league-leading 29 goals and probably leads the league in PPG’s. His -5 isn’t some *glaring deficiency. But my point was that … there’s room for improvement on the even strength play.

I didn’t mean to put the above post in italics. Thrashers had a PP in the final minutes of regulation but didn’t score. What a chance to take the two-points right there. Recchi, what can you say? He scores the equalizer!

Not only did we win it, we also had more SOG. Second time in four games. Maybe they’re going to make this a habit. The Thrashers are a fun team to watch when everyone is putting in 60 (or more) minutes.

Wow. First ever win in St. Louis for Atlanta. So that monkey is off our back. That’s four straight wins to answer four straight losses. We’re over .500 again! And this was our game in hand on Florida, and we WON IT. It’s all coming up roses!

Our record after regulation? 8-1. That’s 4-0 in overtimes and 4-1 in shootouts. What a “nice” Christmas present. By the way Waddell is 18-11-1 behind the bench this season. Lifetime, he’s 22-16-2 as the Thrashers Coach.

How close are we now to the division leader? Former Thrasher “rental” Keith Tkachuk got on the stat sheet twice for St. Louis. Recchi now has four (4) goals with four (4) helpers for eight (8) points in seven (7) games. Cruddy acquisition?? Stupid move??? Or fantastic pick-up?, since he wins puck battles in the corners, too. Recchi doesn’t want to retire. He wants another contract. And he probably doesn’t care who offers it to him. At $540,000 this year, he’s an absolute steal. I can’t believe he’d cost much to re-sign for next year. My guess would be around $850,000.

That is it. 4 win in Road. This is a good Christmas present. Hossa is son of Gun, played all game for 50% his skills, but show off on OT. ONly 19 sec. he needed top score Goal winning. OK everyone, MArry Christmas!!!! I am a good Mood right now. See you every one back at Wednesday.

Brendan - thanks for the follow up on the italics, I didn’t know if you were referring to an earlier quote. And another point by Recchi I thought he had the first pass before Enstrom on that Kovy blast PPG.

By Brendan

December 23, 2007 8:55 PM | Link to this

Neither Recchi nor Hossa were among the “Three Stars” of the game. Thrashers got two PPG’s and gave up only one PK goal.

Enstrom deserved some consideration, as well. I realize it’s a “home town vote,” so Tkachuk is obviously going to be there among the three stars.

Folks, the St. Louis Blues are a GOOD club. We just beat them at home. TB, OTT, MTL, and STL are all teams that could be playoff bound—and they all just got defeated by Atlanta. I think the franchise record for wins is five. Can someone double-check that?

By Brendan

December 23, 2007 9:03 PM | Link to this

Okay folks, I see NHL “On the Fly” Analyst Dave Reid is behind the desk. Let’s hear HOW BADLY he rips the Thrashers this time around. I’ll be waiting for him to say how “lucky” we are … and how our only chance to make the playoffs will be the win the division.

C’mon Reid. Prove me wrong and PRAISE this team!!

First off, hells freakin’ yeah!! On a night I get to see my Deacs live beat VT (sorry GaVaHokie!) on a buzzer beater, I come home to see that my prediction of a 3-2 win (with Lehts in net) come to fruition! I love when Christmas comes early! Recchi strikes again…I love it when a player gets revenge on an arrogant GM! Perhaps Mark will propel us to a Cup like he did the Canes in 2006! Okay, now I’ve gone a bit too far.

Manley — so happy to hear you got the package PJ sent…again, you are a great American…God bless.

PJ — hate to steal from the 2 live Stews, but BIG UPS for coordinating that whole effort! It warms the heart knowing such thoughtful people like yourself and other Blogland Thrashers fans care enough to honor our sons and daughters who are protecting our freedom with such a heartfelt gesture. I feel lucky to be a small part of this on-line family!

Merry Christmas to everyone in Blueland!!!!!

PJ, and all who were involved, that was a very nice gesture to do for Manley and the troops.

Merry Christmas to one and all. I leave for the Gulf Coast of Florida on Wednesday. I’ll miss the Blue Jackets game, unless there’s a network in Florida that carries it. Hopefully, the Thrashers can keep it going. I’ll be back by New Year’s Eve. Let’s see if the team will be over .500 to start the year.

What was also nice about this victory is that it was a controlled game. Yeah, the Ottawa game was great, but the first thing people will ask is “How can they do THAT over the course of an 82 game season?” It’s not like we had to rely on Kovy playing lights out otherwise we don’t have a chance. Instead, we got contribution from multiple lines. And even though the 4th line didn’t score, they had some nice shifts. On to the “Slater’s first goal” topic, he has to start practicing one-timers. He got a great pass in the slot but couldn’t get it off in time. He also got a very similar pass, only from the right side instead of the left like tonight, but he tried to tee it up and Huet got in position to make the save.

A friend just sent me the e-mail so I did it. Not as shiny as when I saw Lord Stanley’s Cup, but still interesting to see…
