We Had Them Right Where We Wanted Them

I can see it now. The next time we play the Tampa Bay Lightning, during the pre-game discussion John Tortorella is going to tell his guys, “Hey, whatever you do, don’t get a 2 or 3 goal lead on these guys. That’s right where they want us”!

And who would blame him. The last time the two teams matched up, the Thrashers erased a 4-1 deficit by scoring 5 unanswered goals. This time Atlanta did it by scoring 2 goals in the last 5:18 to send the game into overtime, where they then beat them. It’s almost like they are just toying with them. There is a certain evil, twisted, demented quality about that type of a team that I just love!

The Boys of Blueland started showing this quality in Ottawa at the beginning of the month when they got behind 5-0 and pulled to within a goal of the Senators. The very next game is when they completed the “sting” against the Bolts for the first time. Last week, they “played” the Panthers much the same way when Marion Hossa scored to tie the game with less then 3 seconds left on the clock. Ilya Kovalchuk then finished them off 25 seconds into the overtime session, (Very humane thing to do, finishing off wounded prey so they don’t suffer long).

Last night after a very strong first period, the Thrashers allowed a one-goal lead slip away. The goal coming when Pascal Dupruis beat, I mean literally BEAT, Brad Lukowich to the puck and fed a nifty pass to Brad Larson who tallied his first goal of the season. But Tampa Bay’s Jan Hlavac and Vinny Lecavalier scored second period goals just 38 seconds apart to put Atlanta in a 2-1 hole. (It ended a nice run of 98:59 Johan Hedberg had gone without allowing a goal). Half way through the third it was 3-1.

Right where we wanted them.

The hustle of Slava Kozlov earned a 5-3 power play at 13:57 of the third, then he and Marion Hossa assisted on a goal by Bryan Little. Hossa later teamed up with Niclas Havelid setting up Kovy’s game tying goal at 17:37, his NHL leading 17th of the season. The pass from Hossa found its way past two Tampa defenders who were sprawled out on the ice like pretty little snow angels.

Enter Todd White in the extra frame. He took a pass from Kovalchuk on the left side during a 4-3 power play and motored his way to the net for the game winner. Tobias Enstrom had the secondary assist and played an amazing 27:18 on the ice. It was White’s second such goal in the past three overtime games. He has gone from being called Charmin, (because he was “soft”), to be referred to as Bounty-The Quicker-Pucker-Upper due to his improved play. Maybe we can now start calling him Dow Scrubbing Bubbles. Because in overtime, he works hard so you don’t have toooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

(Sorry)…

Anyway, the win brings our team to 10-10 on the year and 6-1 on the 8 game swing through the Southeast division, picking up 12 points and only giving back 5. It ties us with Boston for 9th place in the conference, just one point behind 8th place Toronto. The Thrashers are third in the division, seven behind Carolina and two in back of the Lightning. The victory also brings Atlanta to 6-2 for the month of November and assures the team of a non-losing record for the month.

The Lightning came into the game on a roll winning five in a row. They had built a two-goal lead on the Thrashers with less then half a period to go. But they left Blueland with their win streak snapped and their heads shaking.

They’ve only themselves to blame. They walked right into our trap.

Suckers!

THRASHERS WIN!

By R. Stroz

November 20, 2007 12:45 AM | Link to this

A few observations from the stands tonight.

1) The Hossa penalty was a game changing event. For at least four minutes after the penalty, the crowd went nuts expressing their collective displeaseure with the call. The penalty call brought the crowd and the Thrashers back into the game. The call “woke” everyone up. I don’t think I’ve ever observed a crowd that small make so much noise. Also, the refs, probably fearing for their collective lifes, started calling penalties on Tampa.

2) Enstrom. First, Enstrom drew the penalty in overtime by controlling the puck all the way around Tampa’s boards. Then after drawing the penalty, Enstrom literally pinned down one of the Tampa players on the Atlanta end of the ice. This allowed the Thrashers to have a 3 on 2 break up ice ending in the game winning goal.

An excellent blog, Rawhide. I think the resiliency of this year’s team was born in the 6-4 loss at Ottawa. Remember, when they trailed 5-0? Then strung together four goals, including a hat trick by Kovy. From that point forward, it semmed, the team never really thought of itself as “out” of a game. This 6-1-0 record vs. divisional opponents is just remarkable.

Tortorella is a whiner. Always has been. Enstrom is playing unbelievable hockey. Plays D, stops bigger forwards dead in their tracks, block pucks, flies with the puck, shoots a good, accurate hard shot. What a find!

Yeah ToBEE’s takedown one-on-one w/LeCavalier was nothing short of fantastic…on ice or not….a guy 5’9” (MAYBE) takes down 6’4” and solid guy?

Impressive(kinda makes me wsh for a mortal kombat font)

Another great game from the Boys in Blue! These guys may lack in skill from a collective standpoint, but they are showing the heart it takes to win any game they are behind in. That sets them apart from a lot of teams in any sport. Just because you get behind doesn’t mean you’re out of it. Tobias Enstrom…what a young stud. He perhaps single handidly saved the game at the end catching and negating Lecavillier on a partial break away. That was huge! Hossa gets off the shnide and Kovy continues to be arguably the best player in the league. Great stuff! A bright spot in the Atlanta sports scene.

Stroz- You’re absolutely rightabout the Hossa penalty. I’ve never seen the Philips crowd so mad about and call and vocal about it. It was a horrible call on Hossa as he’s not a diver. Kovy I might have believed, but, not Hossa. Anyway it was the silver lining in the cloud as both the team and the crowd woke up.

Anyone else thing the last penalty on TB may have been a “make up” call? We sit in the second row to the right of the goal and I saw a lot worse not get called last night.

Another point - with Little, Enstrom, and Pop we have three really solid players for a number of years.

I was screaming on my neiborhood, when White put puck on the net. Grabed my wife and kissed her. I was happy man. Out OT record 5-0, that means we could not loss game on OT or SO. Let’ s Go Thrasher one more win against Washington. Make present for all your Fans to Thanksgiving.:-)

How much more can you say about Enstrom’s play. He’s quickly become a top pair D-man and no penalties against him again last night. If DW can find a bigger top pair man to go with him this team might actually be thought of as strong defensively for once.

Hey they also out shot another team again…

By BAF

November 20, 2007 8:39 AM | Link to this

I agree, the penalty on Hossa was crap. But I think it was a make up call from the slashing call they called on TB a few minutes earlier. I didn’t think that was much of a slash. The penalties after Hossa’s were penalties and were properly called regardless of Tortorella’s whining.

Toby is playing great! I love watching him.

By GaVaHokie

November 20, 2007 8:46 AM | Link to this

This team reminds me of the Savard years… very clutch! We had tons of come-from-behind wins in those days. This team fights to the end.

Enstrom stoning Lecavalier on that break away was fantastic. Then he stood him up again when Vinny got frustrated and tried to muscle right back in.

Another thing I’ve noticed? No one has bashed Klee since Hartley was shown the door… the defense seems to be settling in to their own style of play, or McCrimmon really DID have something up his sleeve that Hartley wouldn’t listen to.

By BAF

November 20, 2007 9:23 AM | Link to this

As it pertains to the D, I think a big part of the improved play is getting the right pairings and then sticking with them. Zhit and Nik were just not good together even though I believe they are both good defensemen. Nik and Toby are doing well. Even though there are breakdowns with Zhit/Pop’s and X/Klee, they are learning each other and the play is improved. A key to the defense is puck control on O and the forwards doing their jobs backchecking. This has improved greatly.

What I would like to see more of and it is improved since BH left, is not give up the blueline so easily. Also, the PK be more aggressive on the boards. I love TB’s PK.

This team’s history has been characterized by streaky play. They’ve expended a lot of energy to get to .500 but now is not the time to let off the gas. Their performance in the next ten games will tell me if this is indeed a different Thrashers team.

BRENDAN - I think the resiliency of this year’s team was born in the 6-4 loss at Ottawa. - I totally agree. You and others commented after that game that it could be the thing to light a spark. Seems like it ignited an inferno.

PJ - Tortorella is still a?? Sphinctal Void? Was that the verbage you were seeking? Maybe Rectal Recess?

RSTROZ - The Hossa penalty was a game changing event. For at least four minutes after the penalty, the crowd went nuts expressing their collective displeaseure with the call. The penalty call brought the crowd and the Thrashers back into the game. The call “woke” everyone up - Yes, indeed….it was an injustace of E-GREEE-GEOUS proportions. I think it woke the team up as well.

Todd White - keep playing like the way you have lately and we’ll call you whatever you wish!

A name for Todd White? I’d prefer No. 1 centerman. One of the things that turns an avg center into a top one is being able to finish the rush consistently. That is, you call your own number for the score. It really increases the odds of somebody scoring if the opposing d-men and goalie have no idea if you’re going to pass it or shoot it.

Great comeback win last night. It certainly appears that the Thrashers are building some identity and playing hard consistently. Dupuis knocking his man off the puck and making the pass to Larsen for the first goal was a thing of beauty.

I have a dumb question for some of you experts. The event summary from the Thrashers site shows that Tampa was a +5 for the game while the Thrashers were a -5. I think the stat is calculated based on who is on the ice when goals are scored. Is that right? And, if so, how can those numbers be right? Thanks for any knowledge you can pass on.

By Brian

November 20, 2007 12:52 PM | Link to this

Can someone direct me to Rawhide’s blog please? I seem to have stumbled upon some other blog where people appreciate Todd White and think that the effort we made during that Ottawa game that came up short actually was a good thing…

So how ‘bout that Enstrom!!!

By kracker

November 20, 2007 1:04 PM | Link to this

Tony H The cumulative +/- score of -5 Thrashers and +5 Lightning is correct. Plus/Minus stats are scored only on even strength goals and short-handed goals for.

There were a total of 5 even strength goals for the game, 3 for TB and 2 for Atl. The 2 EV goals for the Thrash cancel out 2 of the Bolts’ EV goals. The remaining TB EV goal counts a +1 for each Lightning skater on the ice and a -1 for each Thrashers skater.

Goalies don’t count for +/-. The Thrashers two power play goals last night don’t count for +/- either.

Submitted for your approval, a man. Call him Brian. A happy, good and decent hockey fan of the modern day era. He tries to enter a blog site that he has visited frequently and is highly vocal in. He believes he has come to a place to spar with those who wish to complain about the Thrashers simply for the sake of complaining. He entered the blog to battle with those who, in his eyes, only seem to find intellectual stimulation in argumentation of hockey and the Thrashers. To stand up for the Thrashers center Todd White as he has done so many countless times before.

Instead he stumbled into a realm unknown to him. A dimension somewhere between acceptance of Todd White and acknowledgement of a come back effort that came up just short as being a “good thing”. He finds this place puzzling and confusing as it resembles the blog site so much, but surely this cannot be the same place.

Unbeknownst to Brian, he has entered into… The Twilight Zone.

Six more games until we hit the 20-game “Don Waddell evaluation period.” If the team goes 3-3 in those six games, he’ll still be +6 (13-7) since taking over.

If you think positively, that can be as high as 16-4, and a +12. If you think negatively, he could be 10-10, and right back to a (-6), where he inherited this club from Hartley. Folks, there’s 62 games left. That’s 124 points. If the Thrashers take 75 of those points, they’ll finish with 95-points and be in the playoffs. I can still hear Hockey Night in Canada asking Bobby Holik, “How realistic is making the playoffs this year?” If we do make it in, it means we only gave up 49 of those 124-points. To get there, we’ll need just about every overtime or shootout victory. This may be a bad analgy, but think of a basketball team that actually hit every free throw in a game? Wouldn’t that potentially change the outcome? The great news is … Hedberg’s never lost a shootout. Kari, I believe, still has a winning record in shootouts. And presently, the Thrashers are 5-0 in overtimes.

If this team only loses 20 more games in regulation from now ‘til the end of the season (62 more games), I think they’ll make the playoffs. I could live with a 47-30-5 record (99-points, new franchise record). Your thoughts?

There’s a poll on the AJC hockey page that lists Steve Rucchin as a “best new addition” to the team this year? First off, Rucchin isn’t “new.” He played last year, which is something he isn’t doing this year.

I’m almost positive the poll question meant “Tobias Enstrom.” The other voting options are Todd White, Ondrej Pavelec and Bryan Little. I think the question should include Popovic as well. Although, Popovic certainly played some for Atlanta last year. But this is is official rookie season, I believe.

They even managed to infiltrate our message boards here at the AJC. It’s quite an ordeal to hit 30-60 newspaper outlets, nationwide, plus all the traditional mainstream NHL blogsites. But, if someone’s love for Toby is that strong, it could be done. Part of me thinks that the “Rory Fitzpatrick campaign” was so successful because he played on a Canadian team and receives votes from predominantly Canadian voters, who thought it was a “hoot” to see if they could actually embarrass the league with a “write-in” campaign. How much love will they (Canadian voters) show a “Swede” who plays in the deep South? Shrugs. Again, I think Enstrom merits some “honest” consideration. No offense to Rory Fitzpatrick.

AL You can sign in with your e-mail address and create a password one time. Then you can vote as many times as you wish without entering name and all that stuff again. Does anybody know where/when the voting standings are or will be posted?

AL - I don’t vote all day long, but a good 10x in a row, and in the lower right on the next page after you hit submit there is a link called vote again. It will timeout but not as long as you are voting over and over again as you say…

So, what do you make of Getzlaf’s deal?.

While I’ve got you thinking about it, what about Matt Carle’s new deal? And Carle’s comments about the future of the Sharks. He’s at least the second player on San Jose to declare the organization is going to win multiple Cups.

Ok, here’s the deal lucile… I live in the Cayman Islands. I do NOT have Dish Network NOR DirecTV. Therefore I have to rely heavily on bars to carry the games. Earlier today on AJC, it stated that the TV was on SPSO and now it’s showing their being shown on VS. I checked nhl.com and VS is showing 3 games… NONE of them being the Thrashers. Are they still being shown on SportSouth?

Al - it’s on SPSO, Mon against TB was on Vs which may be causing the confusion. Check back tonight or tommorow morning, I will post a pic you can use for your desktop wallpaper. It is almost exactly what the magnetic schedules are that they hand out at the games and those are always right. Remind me if I forget…

Why not write-in Patrick Kane? If you’ve seen any B-Hawks games, you’ve got agree that he’s a worthy All-Star candidate (yes, I know he’ll be in the YoungStars game, but I think he deserves the nod)

My picks for the west: F: Camalleri, Iginla, Kane(write-in)

D: Beauchiman(spl?), Hannan

G LeClaire

For the East:

F: #17, Lecavalier, Hoss

D: Bouwemeister, Enstrom(write-in)

G: DiPietro or Lundqvist

I wish you could write-in more than one guy.

GO BLUE !!!

P.S.-To the guy who has Comcast, but no NHLTV…email me, I can give you a call and see if we can’t work out something for ya.

How do you confuse a group of Rednecks on Karaoke night at a diner named after a famous hockey movie?

Watch a hockey game on the big screen and cheer loudly when the Thrashers score. The morons think you’re cheering their yodeling.
