The Good, The Ungood and The Ugly

Four games in and its time for the first run at, THE GOOD, THE UN-GOOD, AND THE UGLY regarding the Thrashers.

First, THE GOOD.

(Pause for effect)…

OK, now for THE UN-GOOD.

POWER OUTAGE: The Thrashers are 17 for 24 in PK situations, (70.8%). Meanwhile their power play is a woeful 1 for 19, (5.3%), the 5th worst in the league. To be honest, it hasn’t even looked THAT good. Now, most of us are not surprised one iota that Atlanta struggles on the power play, same song different verse from the previous season. However, it is being exacerbated by the lack of ability to ward off the opposing team’s PKs. (And yes, exacerbation is legal in this state).

Now, I have a theory regarding this dilemma. We are told that this team is supposed to be faster. However, when we go on the man advantage, we are standing still. Maybe we need to try utilizing some of that speed?

OK, just give me the “DUH” Award now.

We move the puck around the perimeter nicely. The problem is that the other team is just fine with that. They can sit in their 4 corner defensive posture and never feel the need to waste one ounce of energy chasing someone down who dares drive the puck to the net or push some big body out from in front of the goalie.

This probably also explains why the other team seemingly scores right after we get off the PP. The entire team has had 2 minutes of rest. Even the one’s who were on the ice.

ZONED OUT: Most NHL video games I have played, uh I mean that my KIDS play, have a stat showing how much time the two teams spend in the opposition’s zone. I don’t know if the NHL keeps such stats, officially or otherwise, but if they did we would be getting “out-zoned” by a 2-1 margin.

For all of our “speed” we cannot seem to link together 3 passes once we have gained the blue line. At the same time our opponents could file for Homestead Exemption in our defensive end. The most consistent display of speed I have seen has been when our defenders are chasing forwards around our end of the ice for a minute or,…seven.

On the offensive side, speed means nothing if your not moving to open spaces for your teammate to pass the puck to you or if your not keeping the puck on your stick.

Yes, this is basic. But right now this is where we need to start.

DEE-DEE, GET OUT OF MY LAB: Somebody go and find Dexter’s Lab and see if he can produce the chemistry this team needs. Right now, we got none of it! Outside of momentary flashes, no line or defensive pairing seems to be working.

In baseball, when a team goes through a hitting slump a manager will sometimes pick his lineup out of a hat to try to shake things up and change the luck at the plate. Maybe Hartley can do the same. Heck, maybe he can put is centers in the middle of the locker room and have them pick, one by one, their line mates. Kind of like the kids picking teams on the ponds.

THE UGLY

The Thrashers are, to-date, the only team with a goose egg in the POINTS category and have been out scored 17-4 doing so. We have been out shot by an average of 22.75 to 35.5 per game. We have an overall -7 plus/minus as a team, (Only Vancouver is worse with a -10).

I could go on. I could discuss our lack of team size, the fact that we have played 240 minutes and have YET to possess a lead or that for WAY too much of those 240 minutes our team just looks out-matched, out-prepared and out-skated.

Or, you could.

You could add under Ugly: Our opponents have more goals (2) on OUR power plays than we do (1).

Now that’s ugly.

To echo a point by BoultonBrusier: I am so tired of watching Slater skate around but contribute almost nothing (5 goals all of last year).

But now it’s getting worse — we seem to have a Slater or two on every line! Dupuis, Perrin, Sterling — it’s the attack of the Slater Clones! Hide your women and children (and goalies)! Yes, we added a bit of spee d but it’s chaser’s speed, not playmaker quickness. And we are getting out-muscled all over the ice.

What the heck Kari was doing starting the Buffalo game? After all, he’d lost the night before (on 3 clear-look goals) to the Sens’ THIRD STRINGER. Besides being tired, this might have been a clue to BH that he wasn’t quite on top of his game!

In any case, we might as well just drop anchor on offense until we get a decent D, because that’s where it all starts. There is not a top-line D-man in the bunch. Ex is average at best, and apparently Zhitnik turned 50 over the summer. It goes downhill fast from there. I was seeing Daniel Tjarnquist in my nightmares last night…..

Here’s a couple of more fun stats (note the sarcasm) to look at early in the season.

The Thrashers have been outscored 2-1 while on the Power Play.

If the Thrashers could combine all the goals they have scored this season and put that up vs. the goals they have allowed in each individual game they would only be 2-2…OUCH!!!

I had to look up a few more on ESPN. Our leading scorer (Kovy with 2 pts.) is tied for 120th in the league. The second leading scorer(s) (several players tied with 1) is tied for 219th.

I’m done with the geeky stats now.

In baseball Okay, Bob Hartley :)

I couldn’t turn my TV off, the remote was broken. Struggling to seat awake through that disaster was a grueling punishment. Maybe I should start watching baseball, since everyone and their brother seems to refer to the game.

As far as hockey, the only player that seems to be in the game is Kovy.

What will Saturday bring?

Brian - I was surprised that there are actually 4 teams that are worse than us in that category. How are we only 5th worst in the league??? - The reason is because we have ACTUALLY scored one goal on the PP, the other 4 have yet to tally a PP goal.

Straight-line speed is overrated. Most guys who possess it as their main skill find their niche as penalty-killers and defensive specialists, if that. We are seeing the reality of what happens when you wish a guy is more than he is.

Actually, to be fair to Daniel Tjarnqvist, he had as many goals (5) in his last year as a d-man on the Thrashers as “Skates” Slater had last season.

Rawhide - true, I read that quick. There could be 4 teams that are 0-3 which in reality isn’t all that bad…

By Sara

October 12, 2007 12:55 PM | Link to this

Now Rawhide, that’s not fair - you could have found at least one good thing. ummm, hmmm, Moose has a really cool new helmet this year. :D OK in all honesty, and seriousness, there is one major good and that is Kovy. He has been unbelievable even in just four games. The strides he made in improving his overall game last season pale in comparison to how much he has matured into this one. I honestly never thought I would see this kind of play and effort and heart from him…ever. When it was him and Heatley, I used to always think of Kovy as playing Fedorov to Dany’s Yzerman (without the Selke awards). Glad to have been wrong on that one.

And I like Enstrom..a lot. Except for his boneheaded move on that 2 on 1 last night (block the pass not the shooter - felt bad for Kari on that one, he at least was playing it the right way). But rookie mistakes happen. Overall that was a mere blip on last night’s debacle.

Everything about this season thus far makes me sad, depressed, sick to my stomach, and angry. There is too much talent on this team to be this friggin’ bad on the ice. And the thing is I think a lot of these players are actually working hard - they just aren’t working hard doing the right things and in the right ways. It’s like Hartley went out, grabbed the first 20 guys who said they could ice skate and threw them out on the ice and said “play.” No discernable system anywhere at any time on any line.

Pathetic.

Hartley’s not the guy that chooses the roster. He’s just the one stuck trying to put lipstick on the pig.

Clearly, this is a ill-conceived team. No physical D-men, no offensive puck possession, no sense of urgency (aside from Kovy), pourous goaltending, standing, chasing, etc.

Looks like a total re-construct to me (again, except Kovy - he looks like the only player with some pride/guts to me).

I’ve never call for a Coach or GM change on 9 years. I’m calling now. For both.

OK, the death clock sits at what? Saturday night? 3 more games? After the road trip? The problem with this team is no body cares. No one is playing with passion out there. They have tuned out Hartley and quite possibly Holik. If this team comes out and plays a similar game on Saturday, Hartley has to be fired. Reguardless of how well or bad a job of “coaching” that he is doing, if the team is tuning him out then a change has to be made.

Hossa needs to skate with Kovy, plain, simple, end of story. If the Sens can create a big line and have them do just fine….so can the Thrashers. This whole needing to keep Kovy and Hossa apart for scoring balance or because there are not enough pucks to go around is a bunch of junk. I don’t hear Heatley, Alfie, or Spezza complaining, or for that matter Datsyuk and Zetterberg, of even Richards and St. Louis.

You have to have a number one playmaking center to survive in this league. The Thrashers are paying dearly for trying to cheat on this.

It is one thing if the “trashers” are struggling to adapt to a new system or style of play, but it just doesn’t look that is the case. THERE IS NO APPARENT SYSTEM! NO GAME PLAN! NO IDEA!

This team has no identity besides that of losers right now. I hope this changes soon. As a longtime fan of the sport I have always appreciated the physical nature of the game. As a Thrashers fan it sucks that I won’t get to enjoy much of that this season, besides the occasional hit from X. It was nice to see Kovy mix it up last night but that cannot be his role. What will they do if Kovy breaks his hand on some scrubs face?

The only solution I see is trading Hossa for a physical playmaking center (of which there are none available) and a top tier D man (again, of which there are none). Any other ideas?

During HDNet’s telecast of last night’s debacle, Don Waddell, who seemed to be tightening every pore on his body to keep from sweating on camera, actually said he’ll worry about this team after 10 games. Don, you’ve finally revealed yourself. Has anyone seen this team play worse since before the 21st century? (Ok— besides Game 3 in NYC, or, wait, during the numerous streaks from the past several seasons)… 10 games with maybe, MAYBE 4 points, will be too late for a bunch with no visible leadership or confidence. This organization’s current edition is laughable; and wouldn’t you know, the HDNet’s b’casters did, in fact, laugh heartily at the Thrashers last night. Atlanta hockey fans of 30 plus years deserve much more than this. Bring me the head of Don Waddell. It’s amazing Kovy hasn’t asked for a trade yet. I’m sure Hossa already has.

The real question is, WWMD?

(What Would Mellanby Do?)

As in, this team has no character.

Even the coach says that Holik has always been a complainer, so if the team has tuned him out for 3 years, why would they listen to him now?

My bet, if Kovalchuk had gotten in that fight in a blow out game last year, Mellanby would have kicked the a* of every player who did not help him out personally after the game.

This team needs someone to say f### it and start taking names and kicking asses. It is that simple.

If you have a locker room where the coach and captain are not being listened to and you have lost your first 4 games and never been close, it is time to shake things up.

I would work to make a deal to get a leader in and trade Holik after letting Hartley go. Even if we need to absorb some of Holiks salary to send the message that if you are not going to play like Men we will treat you like Boys.

During HDNet’s telecast of last night’s debacle, Don Waddell, who seemed to be tightening every pore on his body to keep from sweating on camera, actually said he’ll worry about this team after 10 games.

Goodness, talk about whistling through the graveyard.

I guess we could put ourselves in his shoes and see it from his point of view. I mean, first, this is the lineup he thought would be effective. Don seems like a good guy. Really. The way he handled the Heatley situation and the Snyder family, just reeks of nothing but class. Waddell is a class guy. Of that I have no doubt. There are some real jackass GM’s out there, who treat their players like crap. Waddell is a good guy in sports, I really think that.

So, look at it from his shoes, I don’t think he intentionally built this crappy lineup. I think he really thought it was a good idea to bring White in for 4 years as a top center and to put Holik on a scoring line, and I really think he tries to bring in here every year guys he thinks are good dmen.

And it’s kind of a standard in hockey, has been forever, to look at seasons and players in 10 game or 20 game segments.

So, putting myself in his shoes, I can understand why he’d say, “I’ll worry after 10 games”. Because first, that’s generally what GM’s do, and second he really thinks he put together a good lineup that could compete for the playoffs (and therein, is the crux of the problem, he really thought this lineup would succeed).

When he’s released, hopefully sooner rather than later, I’d write his epitaph as this:

Don Waddell, a Class Act and one of hockey’s Good Guys, but just didn’t have the talent to be an NHL GM

I’m sure Waddell is a swell guy to discuss losing streaks with. The man is a fantastic rose-colored glasses kind of guy in front of a microphone. I’m certain he’s also a pleasant person with whom to discuss recommended roadside diners in Michigan.

What I’m becoming increasingly suspicious of, however, is a lacking ingredient in his ability to put the right pieces together at the right time. This organization’s roster building tends to go from expansion-like patience to desperation in a millisecond of time. Both are detrimental to a team’s play, as we’re seeing now through bloodshot eyes, and indicative of a GM who’s failing to balance his marketplace’s demand with some long-term consistency. Without a doubt, he’s handled some rough spots in the franchise’s history very well, but he’s failed to transition those moments into something equalling a professional sports franchise that maintains a level of competitiveness. And NOT just wins and losses, but what we have to watch on the ice day in and day out. I can accept a team losing if I can doubtlessly say they played their best.

I’ll give Waddell his 10-game guarantee, but after that, I’ll be hard pressed to trust anything he says. With his luck, though, they’ll win the next three, lose two, win one, lose five, win two, lose six, etc. etc. …How many times will I have to wait for that one win every four or five games? When Philips stops selling out?

Wait, so our brilliant GM has added another, dare I say, “promise” to his long and fruitless toolbox of them?!

We’ve gone from the vaunted “Five-Year Plan” to the “Ten-Game Plan in Year-Eight of the aforementioned Five-Year Plan”…

Wake up once and for all, people. I hate to say it about our buffoonish and bumbling GM—but I’ll go ahead with the honors: I TOLD YOU SO!!!

Don Waddell was announced as the 1st ever Thrashers GM in 1998. That means he’s been running this team for 10-years. (He’s in his eighth season as GM.) Last time I checked, that’s pretty fortunate. There are plenty of guys who’d like to have a 10-year run as a GM in the NHL.

In the seven (7) completed seasons, this franchise has one playoff berth and zero (0) playoff wins. These are the facts. But, in fairness to DW, I really do believe there were some mitigating factors along the way that hindered the progress of this franchise.

But another truth is … what human being doesn’t have an excuse to point to … when failure occurs in their lives? There is where the word “accountability” comes into play. I think Don Waddell is a very nice man. A decent and honorable man. The way he handled the Snyder tragedy was nothing short of exemplary. I must give him credit for that.

Sage, You seem to forget that DW lead this team to the ultimate accomplishment in hockey last season…a first round playoff sweep. That has to buy him at least a five year grace period from the Thrashers ultra-patient fan base and ownership group.

SARA I will agree with you about Kovy and Enstrom. Their play have been a bright spot.

But one has to ask one’s self,…is it that they are playing THAT good or simply that everything else is SO bad that it just seems that good by camparision.

I will even acknowledge that this is a VERY harsh assessment, and I in NO way shap, matter or form want to down-play their effort.

Just trying to be honest about what I’m seeing and feeling.

If we lose Saturday night, I think we try some Olde Time Hockey, Slap Shot style, thats right Tiger Williams, Dave Schultz, Willi Plett. Empty the goons from the minors, bring um up, Desbiens, Valabik, Stoesz.

Starting for your Atlanta Thrashers tonight at center Myles Stoez, at right wing Guillaume Desbiens, at left wing Eric Boulton, and on defense, Boris Valabik and Garnet Exelby and in goal Dan Turple.

I’m sure that would sell some tickets to the Rangers game.

THRASHERFAN - Very good, then. Now let’s go get a win tonight!!

I fully expect to see Moose in the game tonight. I don’t know where Kari’s head was Thursday night but he clearly isn’t with it right now. I still think he is, and will be for many years, a top flight goalie, but Moose seems to be at least prepared for action at this time.

Nothing cures like Ws in the stats column. We need a huge team effort tonight.

DW said he is gaonna wait until 10 games to assess the team. OK, I’ll give him that. Say we are, oh I don’t know,…..3-5-2. That would mean over the next 6 games we went 3-1-2. That would be nice to build on.

Hi Craig. The loss tonight is entirely on Sori Letemin. The offense FINALLY produced enough goals to win! KL apologists. I DO NOT WANT TO HEAR IT! There are NO excuses. Bench him then trade his sorry A++ while he might still have SOME value. Daydreaming punk. Loss will be official in less than four minutes. Posts below appeared on other blog. Cheers! Whoops. Thrasher just scored! Have to wait bit longer. Regardless, still unacceptable effort by netminder.

*Is Hartley sleeping with Sori Letemin? Switched over from UGA-Vandy then noticed it was 1-1. Thought Moose had let one in. Went into rage when I saw good old Sori back between pipes! Hartley HAS lost his F+++++G mind! Have not seen first goal of game. Let in by that no-talent SOB piece of trash. Do not need to see. KNOW it was softee! If Hartley continues to feed fans crap they deserve to lose. Will watch until second half kickoff. Sori makes me physically ill. What a F+++++G loser! To Hell with him!

Still halftime. Another whiff job by gold old Sori. What F+++++G garbage! No-score Blue dildos now in 2-1 hole yjanks to daydreamer in net. Game over. So F+++++G sad. Forget review! Goal is goal.

Forgive spelling. No replay reprieve for good old Sori! Back to sorry Dawgs. This game F+++++G over anyway! Even if this bunch scores a half dozen through some divine intervention then Sori would ole his way to seven whiffs! Am I the only one who can see this human trash has no NHL talent? Heartless losers. From first to worst reality not conjecture. Truly Falcons on ice!

Well, at least the Dawgs are a field goal better than Vandy! But on to hockey. Oh my God! Thrashers had an offensive explosion. FOUR GOALS! See Sori let two-goal edge dwindle to one before second intermission. Figures. WORTHLESS TRASH! Look for Sori to allow two or more in third period! Hope I am off base. DOUBT IT!

B+++++D in Thrasher goal could not even wait till I tuned back in from Dawgs to whiff in tying goal. Sori Letemin a true waste! What a non-talented piece of crap. Maybe the CS SOB can take over as Falcon QB!*

The loss can be blamed on 4 people. 1) Bob Hartley, why bob? 2) Bob b/c he likes to play Larsen. 6 goals by NJ Larsen on the ice for 4. He should not be killing penalties and his line got out worked all night except we they scored the goal 3) Referee 1 4) Referee 2, all everyone wants is consistency. Tonight is the 5th inconsistent night of officiating I have seen. The Thrashers don’t know what to do b/c they have been called for such ticky tack crap then NJ gets away with murder. This is not on Hartley. Those players your fearless leader put in his lap for our 22 NHL contracts got outshot, what, 34 to 16 or something? And they played well tonite. No, really. That’s about the best those 20 guys can skate in a game.

let that sink for effect…

And Brodeur lets in 5 out of 16 shots and you still cannot win? That’s Hartley’s fault? okie dokie, I can see where you’re coming from.

Are Kovy and Enstrom the only players that can bring the puck up ice?

Has Kozlov retired?

When will Lehtonen “grow a pair”?

When will someone realize we need to bring some players with beef up from Chicago?

Why is Thorburn sitting when we need some beef at forward?

When will Hartley change the PP and PK?

When will Hartley bench an underperforming vet to send a message?

Does Havelid even want to play hockey any more?

When will our centers win a key face-off?

When will the Thrashers win a game?

Kovalchuk looked good. Haydar’s 1st period goal was tremendous. The team got its first lead of the season, after trailing 2-1. They even pushed it to 4-2.

Stop. Consider the following. “Isn’t it true, that one of the ‘hallmarks of a bad team’ are that they give up “late” goals in a period?” Bee honest. You ALL know how to be honest.

Well, didn’t we give up “late” in every single period? Some would say that 3rd period goal was the worst. Well, it did cost us the game. But really, the opportunity to win best manifested itself by taking that 4-2 lead into the lockerroom for the 2nd period intermission. That didn’t happen. And right then and there, I could see it slipping away.

I don’t believe in the “mutiny” theory yet. Otherwise, there wouldn’t have been a 3-goal outburst to take a 4-2 lead. But if the guys in blue are trying to save Hartley’s job, they’re not being all that ‘convicing.’

The following quotes are from Thrasher non-goalie Sori Letemin after he surrendered six home goals. Since I believe in truth I substituted several (words):

“Sometimes (I) feel like (I am) running against the wall all the time and (I am) not getting anywhere. That’s the tough part. (I) have to try harder, but (I) just find ways to lose games. It’s not good.”

Hey Sori. It’s not good? Do ya think? Evidently NOT!

There is no system which means there is no coach.

Anybody that thinks we should trade Hossa is an idiot.

The team has too many old ‘has beens’ that are past their prime.

The last half of the previous season the rest of the league learned that the key to beating the Thrashers is high pressure abrasive play. It’s still working because Hartley does not have a plan B. His plan A is ‘chase the puck’. This team never catches it.

Maybe now that the Thrasher regulars are not doing the job, that Hartley will give Chris Thorburn a legitimate shot and prove that he belongs and deserves a regular spot.
