From Rawhide to Ice Man
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Hello Blueland: You know me as Rawhide.
Before we get started, I would like to give a shout to my predecessor, Dave Vecsey, for all his work and attention to this blog. It is one of the reasons I started posting in the first place. We all appreciate everything he brought to the discussion and how he conducted the forum. Well done, Dave.
As for me, I am honored and thrilled to be afforded the chance to pick up where Dave left off. What I hope to do here is simply set the stage for an open dialogue regarding our home team, one that stimulates cerebral activity and interest in our hometown combatants on the ice. For those of you from Livonia, Michigan, that means I want to simply chat about the Thrashers.
I don’t claim to be a “Stats Wizard” or “Hockey History Wonk”, there are many out there that I will rely on for those roles (Brian, Brendan, GaVaHokie, the 45 “Bobs” et. al.). What I hope to bring to the discussion is a simple observation of what I see going on with the team from the vantage point of a typical fan, nd set the table for others to offer their enlightened viewpoints as well.
I am a native of Metro Atlanta, (yes, there are still some of us around), who pulls for the home team and wants them to succeed. I have enjoyed hockey all my life, but the past 5 years I have been completely sold on this great sport. My two sons play at the local rink and I enjoy watching it at all levels.
So, without further ado, .lets cut to the meat and potatoes of this thing.
Here are three big keys I see as vital to how this team fares in the upcoming NHL campaign. Please let me know yours:
“Over / Under” shots per game = 30: I’m gonna keep track of our record every time we hold the opposing team to 30 shots a game or less. It will come as no surprise that whenever we hit the “under” we have a greater chance at winning. To do this, Le Thrash will need to be much faster on the blue line than last year. (Case in point: Opening night we gave up 40 SOGs and lost. This is un-good). I think we are faster on defense, but do we still have the muscle?
Center of attention: I did not like seeing Eric Belanger leave the team this summer. The additions of White and Perrin are good, but I still think we needed to add one more strong center man to the squad. Strength down the middle is a must in any sport. This, more than anything else, is where we will succeed or fail. Personally, I’m crossing my fingers for success here, but look for this to be a position Don Waddell is addressing come the trade deadline, if not earlier.
Balancing act: Last season Hoss notched 100 points, Kozlov had 80 and Kovy 76. Very nice, indeed. The problem is that after that the closest point total among Thrashers who played here all year was Mellanby with 36. This will not do. We need 5 guys who can bring at least 60 points to work with them this year. Yes, that’s a lot of points but last year Buffalo had seven such players. The Ducks had 8 players with 44 points or more, though none hitting the 100-point mark. During the course of a season, one or two guys can slump at the same time, but not four or five. Also, it makes it dang-near impossible for a defense to target 1 or 2 guys to shut down.
OK kids, I recall Zilla has a $5 bet on who will post first on my blog, so .
On your mark
Get set
(Wait for it)
GO!

Good job Rawhide, if you actually update the blog you’ll be far ahead of your predecessor.
On #2 - Belanger is off to a nice start between Rolston and I think Bouchard in Minnesota. It’s going to be salt in the wound unless White gets things going.

Aaron C - Your sentence probably should have looked like one of the following:
1)Does anyone even know that hockey is being played?
or
2)Does anyone know that hockey is even being played?
The two “evens” is a little redundant don’t you think?
In answer to your question…I would say yes, there are people that know hockey is being played.

Point #3… coincides with my argument on Craig’s blog on salary distribution. All the money goes to a handful of players who score 70+ points (besides Holik, that is). The current Islanders and Nashville roster is a good example of balanced salary for a team spending way under the cap.

Aaron C is right- very few know or even care that NHL is back. Let’s face it, the strike came at a terrible time and the league may never recover as interest in the game diminishes every year. I like hockey but even my interest is waning. Fire Betteman!

Nice first blog, Rawhide. I mean, Iceman.
Excellent and right on the mark with all three points. Can this defense hold opponents consistently under 30 SOG? If yes, they’ll win their share of games. If no, I don’t know if there’s enough offense to offset the onslaught.
Point 2 is right on. All I can pray for is that we can hold on close enough to the 8 spot so that a top line center could be rented at the deadline. However, I really don’t think we can wait that long and this hopefully can be addressed sooner, but I realistically don’t see who would trade us a top center now unless it’s in return for Hossa.
Point 3 is also right on, but beyond our big 3, who can put up 60 points? Sterling? Little? That would be completely unrealistic to hope for either of them to do it. If either or both hit 30 pts in their rookie year, it’s a success for them. White isn’t a scorer. Holik won’t do it. I agree that we need more distributed scoring, but where’s it going to come from?
Great first blog, Iceman.

Rawhide - 1st, can I still call you that? 2nd, I think Little will step it up and serve well on Kovy’s line. Perrin can do just as well for Belanger between Hoss & Kozzy. White may be the 4th liner after Holik, who knows? Too early to throw in the towel on the season, thus it’s too early to tell how this guy (White) will work out.
By B. Thenet

Congrats, it is a thankless job. Hopefully you can parlay this into a press credential come the All Star Game :)
I agree with you on the SOG. Although right now the lack of good scoring opportunities scares me even more.
Right now, you have to put Little in the mix when it comes to the C spot. If keeps it going, I think they will be fine there.
I would settle for 5 @ 50 points. I think 60 is a bit too high. Either way secondary scoring will be key for the Thrashers.
I really would like to see Hartley commit to having 3 scoring lines. The problem is that he keeps shuffling the hot hand to the top lines, which kills any kind of chemistry we can get from the 3rd line. The Holik on the Top 2 lines experiment better work. I think Little has much more scoring upside from the 3rd line that our captain.
By Brian
October 9, 2007 1:35 PM | Link to this
B. Thenet - I like Holik with Larsen & Dupuis. Great against the other team’s first line, and score the odd goal. Don’t you think? Put Little with Kovy and let them two grow, don’t put Little with some grinders on the 3rd line…

Welcome to the asylum, Rawhide. I’m sure they’ll be fitting you with the straight jacket (with a Thrasher’s logo on the front, no doubt) soon enough.
I’m glad you brought up the over/under on the 30 shots per game because that’s huge with me. We give up way too many shots. Look at the “good” defensive teams. If they give up a shot, it’s usually from 60 ft away, and second they pounce on and control the rebound.
You’re also “on net” with the remark about balanced scoring. Now we’ve got Sterling and Little up and hopefully they can take up some of the slack, which should make everyone else more dangerous.
Keep up the good work.

Here’s what I would like to know:
Which scouting guru thought that White would be a better center for the Thrashers than Belanger?
Yes, Belanger and the rest of the line were invisable in the playoffs; but, prior to that, Belanger was producing more points for the Thrashers on a pro rated basis than White was for the Wild.
So, why sign White for more money than Belanger was asking for?

welcome rawhide, congrats on the gig.
good analysis on keys to the season. unfortunately it’s hard to make a case where we did a whole lot to solve those issues in the offseason. (i totally agree the belanger thing was mysterious, as was letting hnidy leave). we do seem to be a little speedier now but, on paper, the d looks more patchwork than ever and the o is still kovy, hoss and pray for rain…maybe they’ll prove that wrong on the ice
so let me get a prediction: who will be the first player dealt? and who would you like to see us bring in (who might realistically be available)?

luckydog - no one is going to be available right now. The more and more I look at the players, I think Perrin has to be on the first line (can’t have 2 rooks on your #1 line, Sterling gets bumped to 4th unfortunately) and White is going to be between Hossa & Kozzy, and we hope he gets back to those 50 point seasons. Besides, who thought Belanger would do so well when we first got him? Now, after nobody wanted him when he first got here (just like Sim) we are crying why did we let him go (just like Sim)?
Kovy - Little - Perrin
Kozzy - White - Hossa
Larsen - Holik - Dupuis
Sterling - Slater - Boulton
Stick with these, let them develop some chemistry, and then let’s see what happens. Can’t even think about a trade after 2 games, let’s have that blog in Dec.

Ain’t that the $386,951.00 question?

Hey, where are the freakin’ BLUE letters for my name??? Sheeze, I thought this gig came with some perks! I know I shoulda held out!
Anyway,……I looks like Hossa has come down with Lehtonenitis. He is doubtful for tomorrow’s game with a groin problem. Thorburn may get to suit up.
By Brian

Rawhide - Not only did White get signed for more money, but it was a 4 year deal. But didn’t White have his best years while playing with Hossa (the 50 point seasons I mentioned above)? Belanger was not the lockerroom cancer like Savard was (see Calgary, Atlanta), so it wasn’t like we had to let him go.
If I had to form any conclusion based on logic, the only thing I can think of is that this was DW’s way of keeping Hossa happy. But if you buy into that (which we have nothing else at the moment), then you have to ask, why isn’t BH putting White & Hossa together constantly? That then becomes the $386,951.00 question…
Someone please come up with something why this is the way it is.

Brian - After watching Belanger the first few games, I was impressed with his speed and tenacity, even though he wasn’t that big. I can’t say that about White.
Reasons to keep Belanger:
1) He hated the Hurricane coach and we play them eight times per year.
2) If he maintained the scoring pace for the Thrashers for a full season, he would finish with 30 goals and 20 assists. Those stats are better than White’s stats. Yes, I know past performance doesn’t insure future performance; but, eight Hurricane games would be a great incentive and he knew how to exploit their system.
3) Belanger is 29, White is 32.

Brian… I’m not missing Sim, not for the price.
Stroz… Career stats show that White is a pretty consistent player, reliable in both ends, and has more playoff experience. He’s averaged about 44 points a season over the last 5 seasons… the team needed someone (affordable) that could be counted on to put up those kinds of numbers. Yes, Belanger has upside, but proven? No.

Brian — If Sterling is going to be relegated to fourth line duty you may as well send him back to Chicago. 5 minutes of ice time is worse for him than another season in the AHL. In fact, LaVallee might be a good call up, as I project him to be a third liner in the NHL. Give him the time grinding on the boards at this level so he can sculpt his game against the bigger men in the NHL.
Or call up Desbiens so he can take on Hollweg when NY comes to town. Desbiens is THE MAN (Valabik is a close second on “THE MAN” rankings)!

Rawhide you lost some of my respect when you gave props to your predecessor…. What a tool he was!
Your first assignment Rawhide is to get a link to the Thrashers section on the front page of the website under the main sports section. I’m with Hokie’s last statement on the White/Belanger debate.
For the record, I liked Belanger. I liked his hustle and because most people here didn’t (I’m a rebel like that).
I believe Bob has pointed this out before, but though Belanger started hot here like most deadline acquisitions for this team, he eventually cooled off.
Brian — Perhaps Belanger’s re-negotiations weren’t going well enough for Waddell’s comfort level? Maybe Hartley wasn’t a fan of him?? Perhaps both Hartley and Waddell felt White was a better top 2 line player than Belanger?? Who knows.
By Brian
October 9, 2007 2:44 PM | Link to this
Stroz - I completely agree that Belanger made sense to keep. My whole theory on White & Hossa being good linemates and we are trying to sign Hossa was my theory as to why we would pass on Belanger. I agree that I liked Belanger, but I am trying to throw something out there that makes sense as to why we gave up on him and chose White. Although in White’s good years he would put up the same numbers that you said Belanger would have if he kept his good pace. I also saw the ages but I don’t think that is a big enough difference to pick one player over another.
Hokie - I agree that Sim’s price went up, I was trying to make an analogy that Sim came, people complained, and then he turned out good. Belanger came, people said who is this guy we just traded for, and then he turned out good. Perhaps we will have the same experience with White?
ranollo - I couldn’t agree more about trying to keep Sterling off the 4th line. Read my post again, my exact words were “Sterling gets bumped to 4th unfortunately”. So I am already saying it would be unfortunate if Sterling goes to the 4th, but do you put 2 rookies with Kovy (assuming you already have Little up there with him)?

Brian… my comment on Sim was “in addition” to what you were saying.
On Sterling going to 4th line… I think the team needs to bring Haydar (122 pts) back up to recreate some magic with Sterling (97 pts)… With all the issues we have with line pairings and chemistry, why not give it a try? Put Slater in between them.
By Brian
October 9, 2007 3:24 PM | Link to this
Hokie - I think most people here will say that Haydar is AAAA. If we bring him up, who do we send down or not dress? Boulton? In the new NHL, I am not as worried about not having an enforcer (which Boulton doesn’t compare to the guys I grew up watching anyway). Again, I wouldn’t object if DW or BH wanted to do it, but I still think he is AAAA…

My comment about Sterling was “in addittion” to your idea. He shouldn’t be up here if Hartley plays him off the top 3 lines. I’m beginning to wonder the point of Slater being here too, which is why it seems he’s getting more PK time. Maybe they’re molding him to be a number 3 center? I can’t tell where they’re going with his progression.
And for the note, Carroll Rogers’ editor is clearly on vacation. Ottawa, not Ottowa. Kozlov, not Koslov.

Yes, I would sit Boulton… Sterling doesn’t have a single shot on net yet. And that’s playing on the 2nd line with Ilya Kovalchuk… now, if the kid scored 52 goals in the minors at the hands of Haydar (who actually had more points), doesn’t it make sense, on a comfort level, to give both guys a chance to recreate their success?
By R. Stroz

GaVaHokie - Not a bad idea with Slater, Sterling, and Haydar. Last year when Slater, Sim & Haydar were on a line together, they looked like a bee swarm. They were fun to watch.

Rawhide….Welcome to a new thankless endevor. I am also watching the Thrashers SOG as we only had 29 and 15 respectively against Wash and Tampa. If the Thrahers can’t keep control of the puck the SOG will be over 30 consistently. Hossa being hurt isn’t going to help the situation and the team will be such a deep hole after the Oct road trip we will be lucky to see any light. Hope I’m wrong but I have a really huge concern.

Unfortunately, there are guys that tore it up in the AHL and/or juniors, but cannot translate that success to NHL ice. Size is usually a factor in that equation.
But what the heck, give it a shot, put Haydar and Sterling together. Mabye if Hartley gets axed and they do hire the Chicago coach, he’ll give that a shot.
Hossa out with the groin now and Ottawa coming in? if it wasn’t for bad luck, we wouldn’t have no luck at all
Mabye it’s just the story they’re feeding us while Waddell finalizes the trade for Hossa. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Rawhide - I’ve been a reader/lurker for about a year now. But, since you’ve gone and taken on blogging responsibility, the least I can do is start posting.
I want to do a twist on your first point. While I agree that it is critical to hold an opponent under 30 shots/game, I rarely see anyone discussing how important it is that the Thrashers put up 30 shots/game themselves. I am constantly watching the shot clock (yes, you old Islanders’ fans, remember the “shot clock?!”) trying to gauge whether the Thrashers are averaging at least 10 shots/period and more often then not, they aren’t.
I am a firm believer in the “it can’t go in if you don’t put it on net” theory (See: Little’s opening night goal), but I’ve never seen this particular point discussed here.
So? Thoughts?

I have to say I agree with you FormerIslesFan. It doesn’t matter if the opponents are kept down to 30 shots per game if your team is still only shooting 17 per.
Granted, I’d rather see 15-20 quality scoring opportunities (Hossa, Kovalchuk, Kozlov) than 30 crappy shots (Larsen, Thorburn, Boulton), but common sense shows you can’t score unless you shoot.
Against a good goalie (~.900 save percentage), 30 shots would yield 3 goals per game. I personally expect at least 25 shots for a chance to win. Against a bad goalie (less than .850 save percentage) the team would score 4 goals with 25 shots.

Bob-the difference between success in the AHL and NHL has less to do with size and more to do with skating and positioning. If Little and/or Sterling can improve in those areas, they will be successful. As big as Valabik is, he won’t make this team until he improves his skating. Rawhide is right in that the critical thing is lowering shots against right now. If we can get our 6 d-men and 12 forwards on the same page in our own end it will improve our breakout plays and the forecheck. As it stands now, we spend so much time in our own end that we just want to dump the puck and get a change when we finally do get possession. By controlling the puck after the first shot, or forcing a turnover with no shot, we make our goalies job easier and put our quick forwards on the other end with the puck.

Very true. I guess I was thinking about Sterling and the word on him in the AHL was that he was fearless and go to the net (I love guys that do that consistently, something we seem to have always lacked) and camp out in the crease and get his goals there. I was thinking he’s going to have tough duty hanging in that area against NHL sized defensemen. But if he keeps going there, he’ll get his share.

Rawhide - in this town, you use UPS. That’s probably where you went wrong.
Former Isles Fan - I am a former Sabres fan, and back in the Grant Fuhr days the strategy that we’ll give up 5 as long as we score six. Same thing for shots. Then he blew out his knee thanks to the Bruins and we went to some unknown named Hasek. It then became we will get outshot 50-3 and win 2-1.
I still like the observation of putting more on net ourselves. Just don’t yell shoot it at the 1:58 mark of the minor PP to do it…

Congratulations on being the new “Iceman.” I look forward to reading your thoughts on what should prove to be an interesting season.
1) SOG is obviously important, but it seems that BH’s style is to push for offense all the time. I think that it is too early to gauge how this team will fare defensively.
2) C might be the biggest weakness on this team. I have high hopes for Little, and haven’t written off White - give him 6 - 8 games and let’s see how he’s doing. I do miss the days of Chouinard, Lysiak and MacMillan…now those were Centremen!
3) 60 seems unrealistic based on this roster. Perrin could bring 45, maybe. Maybe White. Maybe even Little, but I just don’t see others.

Hey Rawhide! Nice work…The Snyder piece was great!
Just read this in the Little story:
“Let him play in his strength; let’s see where that takes us,” Hartley said. “Right now we need to give him tools that he can grow in this organization and be a big part of this organization. Right now he’s a part that we’re adding to the core of this team.”
Sounds good Coach, now let’s see it actually happen!
ranallo-Yes, I say call up DesBiens even if it’s just for NYR (He is pretty vicious! Wonder if he can keep up for a whole NHL game?)!
As far as the SOG differential; The Great One’s maxim: “100% of the shots you don’t take don’t go in”
GO BLUE !!!

Isn’t signing the skating pylon, Andrea Sutton enough to become a former Isles fan?
I am still shaking my head about signing White after seeing him play on Friday and Saturday. He is horrible. If that is the best option we have, maybe we should bring back Per Svartvadet and his 14 goals in 3 years. I loved the way Bellanger played. Yes, his production fell off after his hot start in Blueland but he busted his butt and didn’t look helpless like White does.
For the most part, the whole team has struggled. The defense has been horrible. I am disappointed at how bad McCarthey has looked. Most of us wanted him on the ice more last year and now that he is playing, he is making Bob Hartley look like a genius for sitting him last year.
And now Hossa is hurt? Not good, boys.

Isn’t signing the skating pylon, Andrea Sutton enough to become a former Isles fan?
I prefer his maiden name, Mandy, but point taken.
That could be something to watch this year, what’s the over/under on how many games before the Isles fans start calling him Mandy, Andrea, or just plain ol’ Get off da fhuggin ice, Ya Hump!

do not put sterling on the 3rd line. go out and get a center. the big blue ought to get 90-100 points if folks start playing like they should. if not, pink slip dw and hire better scouts. also, pay hossa, keep him in the city of trees.

I am not so much worried about the two losses. Hell, I guess I AM! What I AM concerned about is the almost total lack of effort. The Thrashers worked their way to the top. It is much easier to reach the bottom by being lazy. Climbs are a helluva lot harder than free-falls. They are also much more difficult to reverse. Not winning can be uncomfortably tolerated. NOT TRYING CANNOT!

Excellent observation about Belanger being sorely missed. Terrible observation thinking that your predecessor did a good job. If you want to be taken seriously, say it like it is. He was awful and disappeared for weeks during a VERY exciting 1st place season. I’m sure you will do MUCH better than that.

As painful to the team in the short term Hossa’s tweak is - Long term benefit is front office will see (why have they not already?) his value and get him signed. Lehtonen needs a BIG game tonight as I am sure Iceman will see his chart on the wrong side of 30.

Okay, Rawhide, quick story to answer the question:
I was born and raised on “The Island” and grew up in the Dynasty years. I moved to Atlanta in 1987 and was a rabid Knights fan while they were here, but still pulled for the Isles.
I’ve been rooting for the Thrash ever since they were born, but still pulled for the Isles when they were in town…until two years ago when there was a critical game in March and both the Isles and Thrashers were fighting for the playoffs. That night, when choosing which jersey to wear to the game, I actually put my white and orange back in the closet and officially joined “Blueland” full time. I have not looked back since…
Intersestingly, reading the Islanders’ message boards, the fans up there are Very Very Happy with Andy Sutton so far and so is Ted Nolan, describing his play as “Nasty.” Go figure. But, it’s only three games into the season for them.
Brian - I agree with not shooting for the sake of shooting, especially on a PP. However, 75 seconds of passing to get one shot from the point (that inevitably missed the net 50% of the time last season) is NOT the way to run a PP; especially when you have a team that is aggressive on the PK and goes after the puck carrier (like TB, for instance).
Ranallo10 I agree that there is a HUGE difference b/w shots and quality shots. However, because there is SO much going on in front of the net in this game, sometimes, I think it is very much worth it to just put it in the crease and see what happens…especially when you have players like Sterling that are supposed to make their living there (ala Mark Parrish, Ketih Tkachuk, Dino Ciccarelli, etc.). This is especially important when our “quality” shots simply are not going in.

OK kids, a couple of quick hits prior to tonight’s game. I look to have a new post following the Ottawa and Buffalo games to discuss, (God please, God PLEEEEEEEEEEeeeease), our first two wins of the season.
HOSS-LESS - OK, Hossa is sitting tonight, and maybe even tomorrow night. I would agree with those who feel it is better to sit him now then risk losing him for a month. However, it comes at a time we REALLY need to have some strong games. All this means is EVERONE else has to pick up their games just that much more. Time to man-up.
F IS FOR F-FORT - The only this worse then dropping the first two games is the manner in which it has been done. Many have lamented the lack of effort shown on the ice, (why even this Jeff Schultz cat pointed this out very articulately). Gotta see something more outa the team. We have been lead to believe that our overall team speed is an asset. OK, it would be nice to see it as it comes through center ice and zipping through the opposition’s defense, not chasing the other team’s forwards around our zone for 2-3 minutes at a time.
WHO’S LINE IS IT, ANYWAY? - OK, maybe I am all wet on this,…but I would like to see BH stick with a line up pretty much an entire game. In-game switching does not seem to have yielded positive gains. Maybe letting them have time to gel and get into to some sorta groove would help????
OK, I’ll see ya all down at the Big Screen.

Hmmm… in free agency talk… Danny Markov is still available. Apparently, his $3.5 million asking price is too much for Boston and NJ who both still want a serviceable defenseman. What would you all think of trading either of them Havelid for a prospect and then sign Markov to pair with Zhitnik?

Welcome aboard Rawhide!
I have a real beef with your predecessors, Ice Princess and Vecsey. They went dark after the Thrashers’ last match. Does your position come with a 3-4 month vacation?

Since this isn’t an XBox game, it doesn’t work that easily.
Cap space and budgetary constraints are different. Otherwise, Rucchin would’ve been placed on the longterm IR, which would free up plenty of cap space, and Waddell would have the cap freedom to sign another $2-3M center.
You’ve alluded to this in the past, so I don’t understand the need for your sarcastic post since you seemed to have understood the financial situation of the team.
So, assuming we’re stuck at the salary point the team is at right now (which Hokie seems to have taken that assumption for his last few trade ideas), we should all assume any movement for this team would include dropping a player too.
Also, dropping Havelid down a line and signing Markov means losing someone like Popovic (would need to clear waivers) or Enstrom (the one shining light on our defense thus far) to the AHL. Klee COULD be dropped, or McCarthy, but do you think Waddell or Hartley would do that before the two rookies?

What is the hold up with Rucchin? If he is healthy, is he worth the money or is the cap space more valuable? I would say the cap space would be better than a 8th line center.

JayBird — The only ways Rucchin does not get paid by the Thrashers for this season is
1) Atlanta buys out his contract.
2) Rucchin is placed on the long-term IR, and Atlanta proceeds in attempting to get insurance to cover a portion of his remaining salary.
I doubt option 1 will happen, as you don’t see clubs throwing away money that often.
Option 2 has been alluded to in Waddell interviews, and was basically discounted because the team doesn’t need to worry about the cap ramifications his contract has.
The way I see the situation…Rucchin likely wont be back this season. The team understands he’s guaranteed to make his $2M (which means they’re paying that money to him), and the team cannot afford to add an additional $2M to the budget (despite the freedom of cap space).
I see his salary as lost money now.

I don’t think Kovy needs playmakers on his line… I’d swap White with Holik… Holik (space-eater in front of the net), Sterling (garbage man), let Kovalchuk do his thing… throw Enstrom and McCarthy out there with them. Work the point with Kovy, Enstrom and McCarthy… have Holik and Sterling around the net.
Of course, that would be an actual strategy and we don’t use those in Atlanta. ;)

5-4 Thrashers win tonight and I’ll be all OMG, we’re going to the Cup!
Yes, I know they have Waddell under a self imposed budget. We still have $8m room (or so?) under the real Cap. So, if we make it known to all, mabye the owners feel the pressure to give Waddell some more money to get a center or d help in here. There’s no downside there, except to their wallets, no? We’d even still have plenty of Cap room to do the deadline deals.

Was very concerned when #17 went down, but he seemed OK after returning….This kid Little, continues to impress.
The X/Klee pairing should be broken up IMHO.
I also think McCarthy looked much better…all in all, I think we are watching a team that is still lookoing for it’s identity…granted, the auditions that replaced a “normal” training camp, but Coach has really got to get these guys playing together THE WHOLE GAME.
If they do that, I think I saw some flashes of what DW had in mind when he built this roster.

The X/Klee line, indeed, should become the EX-X/Klee line. #22 looked like a human turnstile on that first goal. I’m beginning to think he is this year’s Niko Kappenon.
The Kovy-White-Sterlin line was very good, I thought. Little continues to prove he deserves to be here.

Best game of the year, so far. I’m watching the replay. Jim Slater had a big chance to tie it, 2-2, with 7 minutes left in the 3rd period.

This year’s Kapanen is Charmin White.
This year’s Mandy Nuttun is Klee.
I’d rather have Popovic getting ice time in order to develop than Klee getting ice time in order to watch the other team score.
And for the love of hockey, can BH teach any form of PP puck movement other than dump & chase coupled with ring-a-around the goalie. When I used to play, we had this novel strategy of a motion offense with players cutting to the net, rotating players in front of the net, and changing position on the ice. I may be wrong, but BH’s PP consists of five players standing in the same place passing the puck round and round until the other team dumps the puck out of the zone.
I actually believe this team has talent; but, the line pairings and strategy must be improve.

Brendan - Since you recorded the game and re-wateched it, was it my imagination or were two of the three goals really soft?
By Brendan

R.Stroz, Lehtonen would definitely like to have two of those three goals back. Then again, wouldn’t any goaltender like to have another crack at stopping a goal he let in? Sorry, I won’t do that again.
I also have to agree with you on Popovic over Klee for ice time. Klee should be in the pressbox. He looks slow as Jaroslav Modry. Remember “Slowdry?” I actually kinda wish Waddell hadn’t tossed in Stefan as “sweetener” to move Modry out of town. While the “Charmin” tag would definitely apply to Steffie, he’s still a capable enough Center to make Kovalchuk seem less ALONE out there.
Jeff Schultz, on his blog, commented that it’s not Todd White’s fault that Waddell offered him good money and years. He’s been a 3rd line Center for most of his career. And now he’s being held accountable for not being a 2nd line Center.
Alex Tribec: “And now the category, ‘third line centers.’ These Atlanta Thrashers players comprise (Interrupted)” Bzzt! “Yes Brendan.” “Who are Thornburn, Perrin, Slater, Holik, and Rucchin?”
Tribec: “That is correct. We would have also accepted, Haydar, provisionally.”

R. Stroz: I’m no Brendan, and I didn’t record the game, but it sure looked to me like ALL THREE goals were soft.
The announcers said Kari was screened on the last one and never saw it. But the replay from behind the back of the shooter i.e., from up ice, showed a clear lane between the shooter and Kari. I think it just fooled him.
That said, you’re not going to win a lot of goals with 1 score of your own.

My thoughts on the game:
In and of itself, it was a good game by the Thrash. Losing 3-1, after going 1-1 most of the game, to the defending Conference champs who have yet to lose a game at all this season(preseason), ain’t bad. They stayed with them, dominated the play for large periods of time, and most of all, managed to shut them down without taking a bunch of stupid penalties (that one on Perrin was complete horse-poop). Aside from the Kovy scare (aka how to cause 15,000+ heart attacks simultaneously), the only negative was the crap PP. How in Hades can you have 6, count ‘em SIX, skaters on the ice and not ONE in front of the net? Hartley’s PP flat out s*cks. End of story.
It does blow that we lost another game but I can at least live with that loss. They actually tried and it looks like they are finally getting their groove on.
As for Klee - I doubt he’ll get benched anytime soon. I did actually tape the game and I’ll go back and look for some of the things pointed out (not that I’m blind to mistakes) but he also made some amazing plays defensively. Couple of times he flat-out muscled the guy off the puck and did it without getting penalized. They need to work on his partnering, so he’s paired with someone else who’s a heads-up guy, or at least get him out there with the checking line/responsible forwards so he’s got more help.
I think if the team weren’t struggling so much overall, some of you wouldn’t be nit-picking his play so much. Maybe not. I dunno, I like the guy, always have, even when he was with the Caps. Norris-worthy he isn’t, but I think he’s more serviceable than he’s being given credit for.
Can’t wait for the game tonight. At least somebody will get rid of their goose-egg.

luckydog - I watched the same replay of the third goal and screamed I don’t see a screen. Darren Eliot, the apologist, should consider a position as a used car salesman for a second job. He really is full of it sometimes. His analysis doesn’t help the newbees understand the game properly.
Sara - I learned in third grade to park in front of the net. Since BH likes working with kids in summer camps, are we to assume there will be an entire generation of players who don’t know how to screen the goalie?
Brendan - I like the jeopardy category idea. I have a category “NHL teams which use the same power play strategy all season.” “For two hundred, used a dump and chase coupled with a ring around the goalie power play in the 04-05 season,” answer, “the Atlanta Thrashers.” “For four hundred, used a dump and chase coupled with a ring around the goalie power play in the 05-06 season,” answer, “the Atlanta Thrashers.” For six hundred, used a dump and chase coupled with…
Next category, “NHL teams that don’t screen the goalie during power plays,” please repeat exercise above.

I have to agree with Sara. Klee had a Jeckle and Hyde type of game. He made a couple of very smart plays with his positioning and his stick, knocking pucks away and people off of them. I have to agree with everyone else though, you can’t have to stay at home-below average foot speed defenseman playing together. I am a big XLB fan, but it’s time that Enstrom moved up a pairing and partnered with Klee. I think we will definitly see an improvement in Klee’s play and our defense overall with that move. Oh, and Enstrom with another save last night. Kid’s got a perfect save percentage right now.
Here is a question to throw out to everyone. With Pavelec supposedly a franchise goalie prospect and the fact that we could resign Moose to very reasonable money to stay around to mentor him and shoulder the majority of games…If a team comes in and signs Kari to an offer sheet that nets the Thrashers multiple high picks…would you take it and let Kari walk or do you resign him?

Well, on that soft 1st goal, Klee did get beat by Kelly, but he recovered nicely… I think he would have poke-checked that puck away from him on the turnaround if Kelly wasn’t so damn fast.
The thing that frustrates me is the last two goals the Thrashers have had were individual efforts from Kovy and Hossa… I’m getting a little bit sick of Slater, Perrin and Dupuis not being able to finish their shots. I don’t know if it’s a concentration issue or not following through on the shot, but lord! They make such amazing moves to the net, and then can’t finish!

FALCONS ON ICE! Sori Letemin fans, line up to take best shots. I believe ALL THREE GOALS were soft but will cut some slack and give him only two softees. Second one typical KL game-killer. Talentless team (Thrashers) pressing and pressing for tying goal then bloop - Sens slip stoppable one past daydreamer between pipes. GAME OVER! Why? Because this group could not score half the time into empty net from point blank range. NO EXCUSES! Directionless squad has no fire, intensity, courage, balls or pride. A hockey team is only as good as its goalie. Even if netminder stops 58 of 60 shots but team loses 2-1 it is STILL a loss! Baseball has batting coaches. Is there such thing as shooting coach? GET ONE! These bums REFUSE to shoot the damn puck. Only 100 percent of all shots NOT taken do not go in! Sheesh. Bench Sori, If Moose fails then bench him. Hell, call up a rookie goalie to win with. Ok, first things first. Marty - I am not Rawhide’s goon! I’ll leave it at that…
Stroz - I disagree with you that there were 2 soft goals. I am with Lucky Dog in that all 3 were soft. He had a clear look at all 3, no screens on any as you say.
Tony C & Rone - I did like the fact that there was more effort this game. Hopefully this is just a growing thing? It seemed for most of the 2nd period we stood them up at the blue line and was why we were tied going into the 3rd.
Sara & UD4L - Klee did make a great play in the 2nd and some other plays, but I would like to see him sit and see what Popovic does up here. When is he going to get in a game?
Hokie & Stendec - Again, I am hoping that these are growing pains and the lines will start gelling tonight. We are seeing glimpses as Tony C said above.
Finally, let’s hold off on trade talk or players leaving the team until Dec. It doesn’t mean some can’t sit, but we are a long way away from anyone getting an RFA offer sheet.

Notes & quotes: Islanders officials yesterday acknowledged forward Jonathan Sim likely will undergo season-ending knee surgery, pending an exam by an independent orthopedist today.
Doesn’t look good.

Former Isles Fan - we were outshot 36-29 which is pretty close. Especially since the first it was about 12 - 5 them, so the 2nd and 3rd were probably tied or close.
Again, it was some soft goals and as Hokie says we didn’t finish on our own opportunities. However, if we keep putting it on net, those will eventually start going in. We just have to stop all these softies…

I had set the over/under at 20 games on when you guys would start calling for Klee’s head. It only took 3 games. Glad I didn’t bet that one. He’s just this year’s Smehlik, Reardon, et al signing out of your fearless leader.
The Holik line played great. That is our one effective line, to shut down the Pizza line is a pretty good feat, Bobby’s back where he belongs.
Sterling won’t last 10 games, who can we call up? His game is not suited for the NHL.
I thought Enstrom was going to get decapitated a couple of times, poor guy.
I got 4 things that made me feel like we’re back in Year 2 or 3 again (besides watching the “talent” that skates out for us each night): 1)We’re back to teams playing their backup goalie against us so they can save their starter to go against Carolina tonight. 2)I’m going home happy because we played two decent periods. 3)we have one or two scoring threats on the whole team, Kovy had to do all the work on his goal. 4)5,000 people, if that, in attendance.
This is going to be one long year, folks. Schultz is absolutely right on with his last reply on his blog. The time to fix these problems was last summer, it’s too late now, the club is built, this is what there is to deal with.
What’s the over/under on Hartley? Game 12?

I would hope that Vermette’s rocket from inside the circle is not one of the quoted “soft goals”. Perfect Shot.

Why is the Spezza-Alfredsson-Heatley line called the Pizza Line?
Klee definitely needs to sit. I would like to see Popovic get chance. Klee’s play makes the other saps we have had over the years look like Norris Trophy winners. Hell, go fine Gord Murphy, he couldn’t be any worse!
R Stroz, I was also yelling at the TV when Elliot made the screen comment after the third goal. Replay never lies and the camera behind the goal clearly showed there wasn’t a screen. How can Lehtonen look like the second coming of Dominic Hasek at times and the second coming of Manon Rheaume at other times? Very frustrating!

That was the goal where Lehtonen didn’t even bother to raise his glove hand right? Just assumed it was going over the goal I guess.
Was it a “soft goal”, probably not.
Was it a goal that a good or great goaltender makes the save on…yes.

JayBird - I asked that myself, I could only think of the correlation between Spezza & Pizza in letters??? Great Rheame comment…
wh - that Vermette goal was at the other end of the ice from where I was sitting, so I can’t testify to the velocity (or lack there of). But when an NHL goaltender gets a clean look (NO SCREEN!) at a shot that isn’t a breakaway move, he should stop it. Even the first goal when Kelly broke past Klee, he was still being forced to the outside which cuts down the angle. That looked like a warmup shot he should’ve stopped. And like B. Thenet said, it looked like he didn’t even make the effort.

JayBird - During the telecast last night, it was explained that there is a Canandian pizza outfit that offered a free slice of pizza to everyone in attendance if the Sens scored 5 goals. Apparently, the Spezza-Heatley-Alfie line put up so many points so quickly, that they were giving away too much pizza and they had to bump the promotion up to six goals. With that, they became the “Pizza Line.”

They’re called the Pizza Line because at their homes games, they score so much, they win the fans free pizzas due to a promotion they run up there.
Lehts is just not an elite goalie. He is above average, but he’s not the elite goalie he was made out to be. Did we draft him at #2 overall or something? He really lost me last year with th irratic play, some of his comments, and then the blue hair incident prior to the playoffs. He seems to be a fun loving guy with a lot of talent, but I don’t see him being a top 5 goalie in this league.

0-3 start. Yeah, they may have looked a little better last night but yet we’re still 0-3. Nice that Kovy scored though, unassisted at that. No one was there to mess it up for him. I like Kari, I always apprecaite young talent, but how much time do you give him to step it up or is he even the one to blame? Soft goals or not, he’s got no help. I think it was the 3rd goal that was shot from maybe 5 feet in front of the blueline. How does that get through??!! Better yet, why don’t we take shots like that?? Ottawa looked sharp as usual though…

Brian,
I agree w/ the statement in a close game (minus your best player)your GK needs to step up. Unfortunately D shortcomings and inability to put the puck in the net at this point makes every save opportunity paramount. Pavelec as the answer makes a nice trading chip in Lehtonen so I hope your dreams of his skill are reality.
A win in Buffalo tonight and things will look a whole lot brighter. 9 games left in October, win any 5 and things are not bad at all.

To be fair, Kari did make a lot of saves — more than he should have to. But the way the team’s playing he’s going to have to toss a shutout or 1-hitter pretty soon to get us a W.
Meanwhile, is anyone else getting as tired as I am of watching Slater scramble around to no effect? I wanna like the guy. He closed the 05-06 season with a flourish, but he hasn’t done jack since. Had 5 goals all last year. If he doesn’t have that many by Christmas this year, I say time’s up…
Worse yet, Dupuis and Perrin look like his twin brothers out there so far…undersized overachievers who are underachieving.

If a team comes in and signs Kari to an offer sheet that nets the Thrashers multiple high picks…would you take it and let Kari walk or do you resign him?
That’s an interesting question, R.Stroz. My first thoughts are, not if it’s Detroit who’s making the offer. Those picks will be #26, #27, #25, and #29 of the 1st round. That’s not “much” by way of compensation for the loss of Lehtonen. But the other thing to consider when discussing the RFA offer sheet is … that the offer must be “egregious” by the other team, or Don Waddell will simply match it.
A paraphrased quote from the Summer from Waddell on this topic was, “I hope someone does make Kari an offer sheet. That way, it’ll be done.” The implication was that he’d simply “match” the offer. Well, not so fast. Would you match a $7.0 to $7.5 million a year type contract for Kari, for 4-5 years? Lickety split, with no hesitation?
I think Brodeur makes $5 million a year. It’s in that neighborhood. Khabibulin makes $7.0 million a year. Is Lehtonen really worth that? If you said “yes,” how do you field the REST of the team, with that much in ‘cap space’ utilized on goaltending?”
I’ll close quickly now, but if a team like Columbus, Phoenix or Edmonton came along with an RFA offer sheet, their next four years’ worth of 1st round picks might be worth owning. And as for Moose, I love ‘im. But I wouldn’t bet on him being on this roster next season. I’m going with Pavelec in the backup role. And Lehtonen to remain. But even if Lehtonen were lost to an RFA offer sheet, the Atlanta GM can turn towards free agency to land a goaltender to be the “assumed” starter. But truthfully, I haven’t looked at pending UFA goaltenders for next summer. Anyone got a handle on that?

I’m thinking Lehtonen will be here. Also, Brendan, I think the Waddell paraphrase is more accurate as “I hope someone does make Kari an offer sheet. That way, [the contract legwork] will be done.”
I don’t think anybody presumes Waddell will re-sign Lehtonen for $7M annually, so clearly there’s an understood disclaimer of “we’ll match an offer sheet if relatively reasonable”.

Going after a fan’s loyalty now? Is that where this board has deteorated? There are now penalties for not attending games or listening to the post-game show?? I certainly hope this is not the direction of this message board. This is the FAN blog!! It’s where we cultivate a fan base, not “alienate” it. The goal here ought to be “inclusion.” I hope the message traffic improves, in that regard.
Ranallo, thank you, sir. That list of UFA and RFA goaltenders for ‘08 was most timely and thorough! And I stand corrected on the revised, paraphrashed quote. That was Waddell’s intention. I think, also, not mentioned but implied, was the concept that the RFA offer sheet wouldn’t allow Kari’s contract to linger all Summer long. For my $0.02, I think Waddell would match any “reasonable” offer presented to Kari. But I also have to advance the idea that … he wouldn’t match it at $7.0 million. I could be wrong, though. Maybe he would. Now, there’s a debate!

Brendan - where have you been? Some “fans” here have been alienating other fans from the moment this thing went up. And what Roswell Thrasherfan pointed out was not a penalty, it was pointing out a contradiction that someone can not be in two places at the same time? How can someone be at the game and also at home watching it on tv? I’m impressed he caught that, I missed it the first time I read it because I was trying to figure out the meaning of pizza to Spezza…

My point, Brian, is why would it matter? I mean, what does it matter if someone is at a game or not? Would it matter if they only listened to the game on the radio? Would it matter if they stayed at home and watched it there? Would it matter if they were at a bar, watching it on TV, without the sound on? Would it matter if the fan did attend the game, but didn’t bother to listen to the post-game show? Preferring, perhaps, to discuss the game among the occupants of the vehicle?
The point is … people are trying to support this sport and this team. To attack the level of that commitment and participation, via scathing personal attack, seems like a “misstep” for this site.
Now, to be clear, I agree with you, Brian, that people alienate potential posters and readers with their comments. If I could wave my magic wand, I’d wish for that aspect of the blog to disappear. It’s my observation that a blogsite is better when there are discussions, rather than personal attacks, going on.
But, to be fair, I could post, “I wish for today to be 72-degrees and sunny.” Someone would respond by saying, “Brendan, you’re just a rabid, anti-rain monger. Aren’t you? Don’t you think people can enjoy a wet and overcast day, as well? Quit being so ‘anti-moisture,’ would ya?” And I would there … wondering how my comments could have possibly been construed as offending someone’s sensibilities. In essence, I have “alienated” the “pro-rain” crowd. I hear ya.

Brendan - it matters because the person in question has made repeated claims of their season ticket holder status and being one since 1999. Go read the other blogs this week. Some said fans make very personal attacks on the GM, on other fans, by repeatedly referring to Ranollo World, and a lot of us are just sick of it. I am glad that others are pointing this out as well as me.
Not once did you ever tell anyone else to hold back their personal attacks, but when someone presented completely factual information that they contradicted themselves, you get your panties in a bunch. You never told them to hold their comments back but you tell me or RTF? Why the double standard?
If people don’t like their financial support being questioned, stop bragging about your “supposed” season ticket holder status even though you are watching the games at home instead of Philips Arena.
By Brendan
October 11, 2007 3:22 PM | Link to this
Brian, these personal attacks seemed directly geared toward the fan’s support of the team. This is not some, “I love Andy Sutton, but you don’t” type of conflict/argument, while the two sides vociferously defend their stance on Sutton’s abilities and tendencies. Therein lies the difference.
Regarding personal attacks, people are going to do whatever they jolly well want. But I think it’s distasteful to attack a fan’s level of support for this team. This poster isn’t “P&S,” running down the South, the City of Atlanta, the ownership, management and players of the team, as well as fans who support the Thrashers. If someone takes the time and trouble to make posts about the team, then they obviously care about the team and support it. To attack them for not supporting the team … seems a bit misplaced. No?

If he was at the game how did he know about the story of the pizza line that was on tv?
Uh, so I guess the TV guys last night dubbed the line with that name for the first time? Couldn’t answer that, but I highly doubt it.
My goodness, so now because you can’t take it that I’ve been right all summer telling you that this team was not going to be competitive, you want to attack me? Talk about your displaced anger, don’t shoot the messenger you goofballs.
If I remember correctly, and one of the other 4,999 of you that were at the game last night can confirm this for me, the new keys to the game guy (AJ or whatever his name is, he’s pretty good actually) called them the Pizza Line when he put the Spezza line up there on the tron (good thing they didn’t leave The Sheriff doing the keys to the game, in that one preseason game he looked a little lost/deer in headlights). That was the first time I heard them called Pizza Line and also wondered, why they heck they called them that. If I recall correctly, they then gave the reason why in the postgame show, mabye it was on the sportscast on the TV when I got home, couldn’t tell ya, but I also heard it last night for the first time, but believe you me, I didn’t watch a Tivo of that game when I got home. Once in person was quite enough, thank you.
Do I need to tell ya that RabidFan won the intermission contest when he guessed Shania Twain in the Family Fued game (by the way, I was guessing 5 for Fighting, oops). Or should I make you jokers feel like bigger goofs by telling you he then looked down at the boy he was with and mouthed “I get the tickets” when they announced that he won, wait for it…free tickets to Disneys High School Musical on Ice!!! Don’t think they show that on TV now, do they? Goofball.
Or do you want to eat more crow by me telling about the 2nd intermission contest where Jaybird says “so, Billy” (or whatever his name was) “I hear ya played some pond hockey as a kid” and the dude then proceeds to go full length of ice (with an ugly slapshot BTW) and nails one of the suitcases head on, the girl skates it down, and Billy wins…wait for it…I think…no,pretty sure it was a Slava signed home jersey (I am not calling those new ugly things sweaters). Or let’s see, anything else I can do to help you show your rear more, no that’s probably enough, eh?
Brendan, don’t even bother with that goofball. Brian’s p** at me for many reasons, mostly because I’ve showed him up in about 50 different ways how he was wrong about this team, hockey, Waddell, etc. Ever since last year, he’s been dying to get me back somehow which makes him out to be a petty little dude who is not focused on the real problems on this club. He’s focused on me. Talk about being irrelevant. I don’t even pay attention to him anymore, you do not have to take up for me, he shows his own rear at every chance he gets.
Any more questions?

For as much as I rail against the shootout (individual skills competition) in a “team game,” and so forth, ad nauseum, it’s still really fun to watch!
One of my favorite things, as a Thrashers fan, is to watch Kovalchuk during an overtime. “You must like cherry picking then, don’t you?” “Quiet, you!” But seriously, it is really exciting to watch #17 try to end it with a quick release. And if/when it goes to a shootout, Slavamatic is fun to watch. I forgot which game it was last year, but Kozlov just undressed the goaltender. He starts out wide then swoops in, then pulls it wide to the backhand for a tap in, past the goaltender’s outstretch leg. It may well have been one of the greatest shootout goals of the year.
