Touching moments and a great finale
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I’m about as manly as it gets. Ladies? Am I right? I’m so manly I sweat Old Spice. I shave with a pair of rusty scissors and wash my face with gravel. I have an old, faded poster of Charles Bronson on the wall behind my table saw in the work room.
But, my friends, I’ll tell you this: I was about two seconds away from sobbing like a 14-year-old girl on the last day of summer camp during the shirt giveaway after the game tonight. I can’t think of a sweeter, more genuine end-of-season ritual … which began with a woman who gave her kidney to a fellow fan requesting the jersey of the longest-tenured player in the Thrashers organization. Her kidney, guys. Peter Forsberg only coughed up his spleen for the game. A kidney is like twice as important as a spleen.
But that’s just how the night was. The fact that we were coming in as division champs just took all the pressure off the game. And these two teams who have been scrapping tooth-and-nail all season just went at it for 65 minutes and several rounds of shootout. It couldn’t have been scripted any better. The overtime was about the most exciting five minutes I’ve seen in a long time. I was standing in my TV room behind the couch, making little squealing noises like a guinea pig trapped behind the oven. And the shootout was match-for-match, Ilya gets clutch, Tampa ties it … Simmer in his cage having perhaps his biggest moment of the season … How good was this stuff. Lehtonen made a diving save with his blocker in the OT which probably ranks in his top five of the season.
And we won. Did I mention that? That was the best part. We won. We beat Tampa as if to say, it’s been a great season and a great season series and a great game between us tonight, but you know what? We’re the division champs, you’re not … and you’re not even going to get the satisfaction of playing us in the first round. Now go. We’re through with you.
Now bring on the Rangers.
Having grown up in NY, I am pumped for this series. We had great success against this team this season, but they are among the hottest teams in the league going into the postseason. It’s going to take an all-out effort to get past them. And as crazy as Philips will be for Games 1 and 2, Madison Square Garden will be an absolute asylum for Games 3 Jaromir Jagr can win whole series by himself, and Shanahan is virtual carbon copy of Tkachuk down low. Their goalie, Lundqvist, is amazing. Kari is going to have stare that kid down from across the ice and say, I’m the future of the league, guy.
What a season. What an experience about to arrive. We’ll have a few days to hash it all out. For now, let’s just exhale and shave for the last time for, oh, say, six weeks or so.

Good stuff DV,….and you’ve not shown any lack of manhood,…just human-ness!
Section 205 was rockin’,…the whole place was jumpin’!!! It was a PARTY!!!!
Can’t wait for Thursday, (or so that’s what the rummor is about game one),…..
I do have ONE request from my fellow Bluelanders,….if those Ranger fans start up with that STUPID “Let’s go Rangers” chant of theirs,….we HAVE to drowned them out with, (No,…not “Let’s go Thrashers”),…..But “Go to HELL Rangers - GO TO HELL”!!!
Thrashers in 5, kids,…Thrashers in 5!

Can’t say how relieved I am to not play the Lightning in the first round. What a game today. That was the most energetic Blueland has been yet.

Great post, Ice Man. I will admit I got a little choked up when Steve announced the team by saying your southeast division champion Atlanta Thrashers. That has been a long time coming. From the 1st preseason game at Philips to tonight, I have been at a good many games, most of them this year. It has been frustrating and embarassing along the way. But nothing was sweeter than clinching the division last night and sending the Lightning to New Jersey next week. It was probably the most exciting game I have ever been to. Kari was absolutely amazing. Anyone who doubts him is a moron. Let me be the first to say, Thrashers beat the Rangers in 5.

Rawhide, I guess I wasn’t the first to say Thrashers in 5. When I logged onto this blog, there weren’t any comments. Then mine posts and there are 4 others. Not stealing your thunder at all.

If the division title was on the line with a game like tonight’s was, I don’t know if I would have made it. WOW!!! What a game! What a season…so far!
To every Thrasher fan: GET YOUR PLAYOFF TICKETS ASAP!! Because I guarantee there will be plenty of Rangers fans trying to get tickets for games 1&2, and we can’t let that happen.

Did anyone notice one GLARING difference in the final standings this season ?
Goals Against… We scored ONE more goal than allowed, we were under 250 which is HUGE, 247-246.
Look at NJ/Buffalo their GA.
In the past 4 games we allowed only 8 goals, coming togather as a defensive unit the past couple months.
We were blown out just twice this season 8-0/6-0. But NEVER gave up more than 5 in any other game.
If… If… we stay OUT OFTHE BOX, keep goals down, we will win.
But we do need to up the scoring and REALLY get on NYR FAST and HARD.
Watch out for that avery thing out there, he causes trouble and will play VERY,VERY dirty, so we need to keep our cool. Would be a good idea to have Boulton in the line up to even the ice.
Great season… I like Atlanta-Nashville how bout YOU !

Oh why oh why couldn’t they let Tampa win in OT. Damn the luck.
Kari is going to have to stand on his head this series. We would have easily beaten Tampa in a 7 game series, WTF was with Holmquist just abandoning his net last night on Kovy’s goal. He is brutal, man I wish we could have played them.
The Rangers are very hot and Lundqvist is playing great. The boys are going to have to be at their best, a win in Game 1 will be huge. Blueland will be rocking, that’s for sure!

I swear I posted last night. None of them took. Basically, what I said was, how very exciting for Atlanta to win a shootout without goals from either Kozlov or Hossa.
I would have much preferred playing Tampa Bay. But hey, how can I complain? We’re in the playoffs, and we WON our division! I can’t get “picky” about who we draw as opposition.
But now the mission is clear. Neutralize Jagr and Shanahan. The Ranger blueliners are decent. And Lundqvist is a world-class goalie. Our work is cut out for us. Thrashers in seven games.
I also want to be the 1st to say, #8 Calgary upsets Detroit in the 1st round, to mark the second straight year a #1 seed falls in the opening round.

I think the Thrashers will win in five or six. Yeah the Rangers have been hot but we have owned them this year and Lundqvist has played in about 33 of their last 35 games and might be wearing down. I expect the Thrashers to win.

JayBird - No sweat on the “Thrashers in 5” prediction. If it happens, I will be happy to share the credit :o)
Jeff S - Truer word have never been spoken. We can expect a fair amount of NYR fans there, but we CANNOT have them rockin’ the place. Common ATL,….get out to Blueland!!
LAC - Atlanta / Nashville would be great for the southeast,…I’d love it. But my first choice would be a Thrasher / Flames final. Love to see the former Atlanta team take on the current one!! - Now, given that we should NOT be discussing SC matchups before we have even played our first game of the first round,….I am going to have to get out to the store to buy some back-bacon and Molson Lite to lay upon the alter of the hockey gods so we don’t upset them with such talk.
Oh, wait,…it’s Sunday. Damn!

Great job Thrashers, all though you were a litte flat early, you picked it up at the end and finished off Tampa. Glad to see we are playing the Rangers first round. They have more tradition and better players than Tampa. It will also be North vs South. My only concern now is that since the Ranger fans know where their team will be playing, they will buy up our home games and out number us. Although I bought my tickets several weeks ago when they first went on sale, I checked today and many tickets are still available. Come on Thrasher’s fans, buy up the tickets now or you may be surrounded by Ranger fans. That might mean more fights in the stands than on the ice and who wants that.

And the Islanders and Devils made the suffering even worse for the Leaf fans by sending the game to a shootout.

Great win by the Isles today. It’s great to see Montreal and Toronto on the outside looking in. I’m sure the networks are happy too now getting 2 NY teams in. That may take away from some of the national exposure we would have received, but winning will take care of that.
By the way, not to brag, OK it is to brag, but this is from my post on Thursday : ” I see Toronto beating Montreal, and the Isles beating Philly on Sat. and a minor league NJ team on Sunday, which will put them in, as improbable as that seemed a month ago. I also have a feeling that Saturdays game will be meaningless after we win tomorrow and Florida beats Tampa.”
Russian, now we need you to predict a Ranger sweep, since whenever you predict doom and gloom it is good for us.

I am glad we are playing the Rangers. Tampa would have been a classic series, but we bring out the best in them.
I truly believe that we are faster than the Rangers and hit harder. We match up on them line for line and we have Bobby Holik who has something to prove to the New Yorkers.

I’m also expecting a big performance from Kovy against the Rangers. He loves the spotlight and I have no doubt he will try to outshine everyone at the world’s biggest stage - MSG. In the past two years (8 games) against the Rangers, Kovy has 5 Goals and 5 Assists and is a +3 against them this year. Considering it’s his first playoffs, there’s no doubt he’ll step it up a notch.

Tom, exactly what I was thinking on Holik. This is what Don Waddell got him for—as his 1st move of the post lockout era. Time for Holik to deliver.
Ya know, I got to thinking that the Thrashers almost reached the century mark this year. It’s agonizing to think about where we lost points. But we definitely left some points on the table during this past season. Three more is all we would have needed. Bygones. And it doesn’t matter anyway. Our detractors will say we’re only in the playoffs because we got to feast off Washington and Florida all year. I’m so sick of hearing that. Florida came on very strong down the stretch and Carolina didn’t miss the postseason by much, either.
All that matters now is getting four more wins. They don’t have to be pretty. No one said annnnnnnything about pretty. But when it comes to overtimes, if they are any, we’ve got to win ‘em. I don’t care if it’s a slapshot from center ice that finds its way in. I’ll take it. It’s unusual for a team to lose the proponderance of OT games and still win the series. Though, certainly, it’s happened that way before.
Bruce Levenson and Bernie Mullin have got to be thrilled that in the 1st playoff appearance, the franchise holds home ice. Even if the series does only go five (5) games, that’s three (3) home games and $6 million of pure profit, assuming the games are sellouts. Which, let’s face it, they will be, even if it is Rangers fans that buy up the straggler tickets.
I’m glad no one got hurt in the Tampa game. We’re going into the playoffs relatively healthy. Pretty fortunate for us.
Attention stat mongers, can anyone give me a snapshot of what Atlanta’s done excluding everything that came before the Feb. 27th trade deadline? I’m looking for our goals for, goals against, won-lost record, and PP and PK stats, especially paying attention to where Atlanta special teams rank since that trade deadline. I don’t care where we are in the aggregate. I only want to know what the Thrashers did since the trade deadline. If you choose to accept this task, many thanks in advance.
And finally, that “kooky” Charles Wang is probably bathed in saki as we speak. His Islanders are back in the playoffs, for the 4th time in the past five (5) seasons. The Isles haven’t won a playoff series since 1993, when it lost the Conference Finals to Montreal. They’ll test their luck against Buffalo. Wouldn’t be something if the Isles rode this amazing momentum into a 1st round upset? Imagine if the Thrashers route to the Cup didn’t have to make a stop in Buffalo?
In case you’re the curious sort, the Isles lost to the Maple Leafs, 4-3, in 2002. In 2003, the Islanders lost to Ottawa, as the #8 seed, 4-1. By 2004, the squeaked in again, at #8, and lost to Tampa Bay, 4-1. And here they are, again, in 2007, as the #8 seed. Did anyone say, “Third time is the charm?”
So, that HNIC “Saturday night special” wound up killing two (2) Canadian franchises. I wonder if they’ll dub it, “black Saturday?” Sorry for the long post.

And I’m somewhat shocked, frankly, that stendec hasn’t come on here and complained about Lehtonen’s soft second goal last night. I mean, who cares that he stood on his head down the stretch and his counterpart gave away two goals? If he allows even one soft goal in the playoffs, we’re DOOMED!!!

So they could not give the actual shirt off their backs because they needed them for the next game? WTF? Are the Thrashers that cheap? They can’t replace the jerseys? Now, if they said “here are the jerseys from the Carolina game because who wants a wet, sweaty, just worn jersey?” I’d understand that.

Very interesting match-up for the Thrashers,……while we were 3-1 vs. the Rangers, two of those victories came in OT.
We won a two-goal game and they won a two-goal game, and the other two went to OT. Pretty even.
I fully expect the Sabers and Devils to win their series. Pittsburgh and Ottawa could go either way, (outside of the Thrashers, that is the series I am most looking forward to watching),….given that scenario, we would then go up against the Devils, another team we are 3-1 against, (however, this is in no way a prediction or trying to look too far ahaead. I do not wish to upset or anger the hockey gods who, of late, have smiled upon us….and now that Sunday is gone, I will head to the store to get some Molson Lite and back-bacon to lay upon their alter)…..

Rawhide, this year does look like not many upsets in the East in the 1st round. The West is wide open, but for the East I see Buffalo in 5, Devils in 6, Thrashers in 7, Pens in 7.
Our series and Ottawa/Pitts could go either way.

LAC - I want to see us beat Vancouver in the Cup finals. Think about it, 3rd year in a row a team from the SE wins the Cup over a team from Western Canada. I would love that.
I want to see NJ lose to TB, only so we can beat Ott on the way to Buffalo. But to see the ‘bolts lose would be even nicer now that I think about it.
On a side note, one more point is interesting about our SE division title. Of the last round of expansion teams, Atlanta is the first to win a division. CBJ, Min & Nas have yet to do that.

BOB - I agree with you assesment about not many upsets in the east and the west being wide open.
I have the Thrashers beating NY in 5,…five VERY tight, close games,….but not low scoring. I think 4-3 kinda games. If it goes 6, I would not be shocked.
Ottawa/Pitts,…going 7 and who knows who wins THAT! - I got NJ over TB in 6,…goaltending is a HUGE edge for the Devils there…..and I predict a sweep for Buffalo over the NYIs. I think after yesterday’s game, the Islanders are spent. Plus, Buffalo is that good.
Now, if Montreal or Toronto got in, I think they would have given the Sabers a fight,…if for no other reason, familiarity from being in the same division.
Out west,…man what a crap-shoot. Nothing will surprise me.
Dallas will go as far as Turco allows them,…..but I would take Vancouver.
Put a hat over the Preds and Sharks. I guess I would pull for Nashville simply out of regional pride, by SJ is, after all, the adopted “sister-team” in this blog.
Oh what I would give to see the dead-wings be one-and-done for the second year in a row as a 1 seed. But I think they take the Flames in 6.
Ducks over Minnesota in 6,…..but I would NOT put ANY money on ANY of these series out west.

Nobody is picking the Thrash. I love it, no respect, fly under the radar.
Lehtonen needs to step up. But you know what, if he falters, Moose steps right in. That’s a nice situation to have.

Buzilla & Bob - Hull picked the Rangers to win as well yesterday on the air (1st intermission break). My immediate reaction was “great, at least we have Ferraro who will defend us” He immediately went to the Sens/Pens series and didn’t say a word for the Thrashers.
JayBird - I am curious as well about parking $$. For the first game, I am going to take MARTA either from the Perimeter or maybe even just drive to another station closer in the city, park for free and pay the $1.75? for a token(s).

I wouldn’t say I’m secretly thrilled the Isles got in … but the way they got in was nothing short of amazing. They needed about 40 things to go the right way over the past two weeks and they got all of them. … Amazing. They were virtually eliminated about three weeks ago.
I’m also psyched because the Leafs and Habs both give us fits …. and now we definitely won’t see them in the playoffs.
So Mats Sundin can take his ‘soft’ division and toast 40 years without a Cup in T.O.

Random thoughts heading into spring hockey:
Does anyone know when the last time there was a Stanley Cup playoffs WITHOUT both Toronto and Montreal in it?
Could it be a sign that the hockey gods have started to migrate south, along with everyone else from those parts?
How quick do you think Mats Sundin got on a plane to rocket his way toward Scandinavia? Hope the pilot makes a “soft” landing!
Has anyone heard from Pucks n Snot lately? Sure does seem to me he’s been avoiding us lately. I sure hope he doesn’t end up on milk cartons.
Putting aside all biases: How nice would it be to see Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Nashville, Dallas, and Anaheim win their first round series?
How nice would it be to see Tampa vs. Atlanta / Nashville vs. Dallas as our East and West Conference Championships???
Do you think if the previous two scenarios happened, would anyone north of the Maxon-Dixon line even watch?
What’s the possibility of getting the Hawks to play the remainder of their home schedule in Gwinnett? Better yet, aren’t there some outdoor courts near MLK and Walnut Street?
Given Bob Hartley’s recent comments regarding “this is no time to ‘turtle’”,….do you think we could take pick up on Detroit’s tradition of throwing octopi on the ice and start doing the same with turtles? Well, maybe on second thought, the shells might crack the ice.
By Brian

JayBird - I was also going to add, I don’t think prices will go up that much more (but will go up slightly) because you have too many different lots selling spots versus a monopoly that the team has that will allow them to raise prices.
However, I just think it is going to be a zoo in general, a lot more media and people in general, not only will every seat be sold but every seat will be used (big difference vs. the sellouts in the regular season), people who won’t have tickets but will still try to go down and get some, and it will take that much more time to get in & out of there which is why I think it is going to be a MARTA run for me…

Rawhide - if there was an “all Southern” conference finals in both the East & West, all of Canada would still be watching. More than 1/2 the players are from there and people still watch for their hometown heroes.
I wouldn’t throw a turtle on the ice, even a stuffed animal one that won’t crack it. BH is saying NOT to turtle. By throwing a turtle on the ice are we suggesting we want them to turtle?
Good idea though to start something. We just need to find something else to Chuk onto the ice…

Best I can come up with is peaches….folks in nashville already came out with catfish (which would’ve been my #1 option)…also, do you think that Flatscreen security would let it in?

Tony C. - I like that idea but that’s not something we can do after a goal. That will get messy. However, if we win the series on home ice, how great would it be to litter the ice with peaches and show that NHL hockey in GA is here to stay? How about after every home win?

Nice to hear about the parking, I figured it would be a zoo and bought a parking pass for the playoffs for the CNN deck, I’m assuming they’re buying the spots up for those of us that paid for the passes. They’re sweet parking passes too with a little Stanley Cup Thrashers’ logo on them.
We’re going to be subjected to a crap load of Ranjerk fans at these games, another reason I was pulling for Tampa.
I’m with zilla, throw some Ranjerk fans on the ice. The JPVJ scores, we throw ranallo on the ice.

I threw my razors in the trash and sincerely hope that I don’t give Olivia (working the left-side taps) in the Guinness beer line outside section 112 tennis elbow before game 1 even starts.
I have full confidence in Holik’s ability as a shut-down center, and the addition of Zhitnik finally gives the Thrash playoff quality discipline on defense. I think we’re in good shape, friends.

So what you’re saying is you’d rather not have an additional 3-5 minutes to gawk at the Ice Chicks?
