A banner night

What a great night. A franchise-record for wins, a division championship (if Florida can hold this 6-0 lead) and a smiling Ilya Kovalchuk lighting the lamp.

Didn’t we just know he’d score a goal tonight? And 3:31 into the game … it just proves that the dude can basically score at will. He just needs to find that will a little more often in the very near future.

Folks, this team earned this division title. As a franchise, it suffered through a rough infancy and some unseen setbacks. We had the All-Star Game pulled out from under our feet in the lost season of ‘04-05 and the playoffs jerked away at the last minute last season.

And this grueling stretch run has tested their mental fortitude.

But the rewards are rich. The playoffs will begin right here in Atlanta. The road to the Stanley Cup originates here.

Now for the tough question: Who’s your goalie? I’ll be honest. I could argue it either way. Lehtonen is the franchise goalie. Hedberg has been a supremely clutch player in some of the biggest games of the year.

You might think it’s a no-brainer. But some of you might think it’s a no-brainer for one guy and some of you might think it’s a no-brainer for the other. (I think I know where stendec stands.)

I’ll withhold my opinion. For now.

Florida will win a game. I can not believe that after 6:0 Florida will stop to play. Great Game by Moose. Congratulation for everyone.

Give Moose the start tomorrow as a reward for the job he has done this season…but you’ve got to go with Lehtonen in the playoffs.

Let MOOOOOOSE relax tomorrow and be rested for the playoffs. I think Hartley would be smart to split duties for the post season. Give Kari the start of game one though.

Congrats, boys!!!!

Go Blue!!!

Somewhere in the distance, I swear I can hear Auld Lang Syne playing, the notes drifting sweetly to my drunken ears.

(I know, the significance of that song has absolutely no bearing here, but it’s a melody that always pops in to my head when I’m in a state of inebriated celebration.)

This was so different than against Washington. A TOTAL TEAM GAME 100%%%%%

TB looks like CRAP, down 6 their TV guys was saying we need to win tonight and in Atlanta…Then FL scored again..

They want to play us badly, because of the season record and NOT New Jersey.

But a Historic Night the FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP in NHL hockey here in town, great to see and let’s hope they can make a GREAT showing in the playoffs !!!!!!!!!!!!

Atlanta 4 TB 0

As much as I love Moose. This is Kari’s team. Play Moose tomorrow and Kari is our playoff goalie…..to start. If he stinks it up-don’t hesitate to pull him.

ICEMAN, I see no point in risking injury to either goaltender tomorrow night. I say bring up Garnett or Brathwaite. Or even, let’s get our 1st peek at Pavelec. We’ll need both Moose and Lehtonen in the playoffs.

But, I’d say that Lehtonen should get the bulk of the starts in the playoffs. I’m not saying that, at age 33, Hedberg couldn’t handle a seven-game series. What I am saying, however, is that I’d rather not see that. Barring something unforeseen, or an utter collapse by Kari, I’d start Lehtonen in every game.

That’s my $0.02.

Where do they hang the banner? Next to the Inaugural season banner? Or the “stylized T,” (Ultimate warrior logo,) or next to the main Thrasher logo? Or, somewhere else? There is a Georgia Force Conference Championship banner hanging in the other corner of Philips Arena.

great game!! Lets enjoy the victory and enjoy the SE championship. Unfortuately I had to move away from Atlanta a few years ago and now forced to listen to the games over the internet. So, what I’m saying is don’t waste this oppurtunity…..get out the the games and support our guys during their first playoffs!!!

I guess the other question is: Do you call up a bunch of Wolves tomorrow and let some guys sit?

Unbelievable game, that was truly a playoff type effort. As much crap as I have given Sutton, the guy has stepped up big time. Moose was great and Kovy came out flying…nice job by Hartley lighting the fire under his arse.

Brendon, I think they remove the lame flying bird banner and replace it with the division championship banner. It will look nice next to the inaugural season banner. In the middle of those, I say we put the Eastern Conference and Stanley Cup Champions banner!

Tomorrow night is going to be amazing, hearing division champs for the first time will bring tears to my eyes and chills to my skin. Congrats boys, but we have more work to do.

Kari is the one, and that should not be argued. I really only have one thing to say (okay a few things). Is there a doubt in anyone’s mind right that this team, this hockey team, is the best professional sports team in Atlanta right now? I mean, given the whuppin’ that the stinkin’ Mets just laid on the Braves, is there really any doubt that this is the one team in this whole city that has the only real shot at delivering this city’s long-awaited second professional sports championship? Yes, the Falcons could surprise, but they’re more thank likely another year and another good draft away. But the Hawks never will, and with Bobby Cox leading the Braves all those failed Octobers, it’s amazing the city has one championship (though, thanks to Cox, they should have had at least two more).

The greatest trophy in all of sports could find it’s way to Atlanta perminately. And I have my playoff ticket package ready, and I can’t wait. I’ll see y’all on the first row of the upper deck, wearing my No. 17 and No. 18 sweaters, where I can see the whole ice and enjoy what I hope will be a long ride into June! I can think of no better birthday present (my Bday’s in June) then the Thrash bringing home Lord Stanley’s Cup to Phillips, or even better, winning it on home ice!

That’s true Rawhide, but what will be even more awesome to hear will be, “Welcome to Philips Arena and Game 1 of the 2007 Stanley Cup Playoffs with your 2006-2007 Southeast Division Champions, YOUR! Atlantaaaaaa Thraaaaashers!!!”

What’s the word on possible match-ups? Am I too early to worry about that kind of stuff? Just tell me and I’ll shut it.

Midfield, it’s looking like the Rangers. Which is good. I’d rather face the Rangers than the Lightning, who seem, no matter how bad their goaltending is, to own us. The Rangers are the best match-up for us. And beating an Original Six Team in the first round only validates the Thrashers credentials as a team to respected.

Way to go Thrashers. I live in NC and was at the game tonight and they looked like a team on a mission from the outset.

All night they really out battled the Hurricanes for pucks and put forth a great effort. Hedberg made some great saves and was rock solid.

I think Lehtonen deserves the chance to start. However, I also would not hesitate to put Hedberg in…he came up with some really big wins for us lately that kept the Thrashers in this position.

It’s a nice problem to have after last year..I don’t think you could go wrong with either one.

Good luck Thrashers…Atlanta get out there and sell out the playoffs and loudly support the team!!

people with the whole “lehtonen is the franchise goalie” argument make me laugh. look at the numbers and stats of each goalies last 5 starts. that says it all in MY opinion. i’m not trying to take away from kari - he has been nothing short of brilliant at times. but moose has the experience. this is the time for him to TRULY be a mentor to kari. the playoffs will be a great test and experience for kari. they will contribute to making him the true ‘franchise goalie’.

Bring on the Bolts!! Though, playing Tampa 12 times this year, at a mimimum, is enough to make me sick of looking at their jerseys. We probably played them in preseason, too. But honestly now, folks. Honestly. Look in your hearts and open your minds to answer this question: “Do you really think Holmqvist and Denis can win four (4) games in a playoff series?” ‘Cuz I don’t. They couldn’t stop a BEACH BALL tonight, on home ice, in a “must-win” game. Tonight’s the sort of night where “character” is defined. And well, look what Tampa did? They got shellacked 7-2. Homqvist gave up four (4) and Denis surrendered three (3).

Tell me, again, why you guys FEAR Tampa Bay? I just don’t see it. I don’t. Bring ‘em on!! Lundqvist, on the other hand, can steal a series all by himself. I’m not saying we should be afraid of the Rangers. But I have to believe New York is a more difficult challenge. I’d rather roll through T.B. in five games, than go the distance (7) with the Blueshirts of Broadway. Our team’s average age is over 30. If we’re gonna win the Cup this year, we need some short series somewhere along the way. Why not the 1st round, vs. Tampa?

Heck yeah baby!! Oh tomorrow’s game is going to be so much fun and there will be NO STRESS!

I like Johan in goal, he’s just dang good. I love Kari, but I think Moose needs some starts as well. (He sure took a nasty shot in the chest tonight)

I really don’t like the idea of sitting anyone until game 1. Are we forgetting how awful they can play when they’ve had 3 or 4 days rest? Game 1 is not the time to show up relaxed and lethargic. I could be wrong, but that’s my opinion.

What a great night for Bluelanders. I was at the sad sad Braves game and didn’t hear the good news until afterwards and when I did, I nearly forgot all about the Bravos’ pathetic loss. Now I’m watching the replay of the game. Woo hoo!

UNLEASH THE FURY!!

Let’s Go Thrashers!!!

You’re totally right Brendan - but I want to beat the NY Rangers, an original 6 team that used to own us (who didn’t, for that matter?) and wallow in all that NE press coverage.

I’m positively giddy right now. But I’ve got to shut it down, get to bed, get up & read more papers & websites, buy groceries and then get on down to Blueland early. What a rough life.

Yeah, what happend to that Rob guy, anyway? I guess he turtled up.

Brendan, I agree about bringing up Garny to play the last game, hell, even for old time’s sake now that the game doesn’t matter. While we’re at it, I think we should also bring up the Wolves’ top line, and a couple of d-men.

As for why I’m afraid of Tampa, it has nothing to do with their goalies. I’m afraid we’ll muster a total of 40 shots on net the entire series because we can’t get the puck out of our own end. Interestingly, I’m a bit worried about the Rangers, because I’m afraid we’ll put 1,000,000 pucks on net, and not a one will go through. Although, I could see us getting manhandled by Montreal, as they’re one of those teams we can never seem to beat in a series. Either way, I think if we make it out of the first round, we actually have a good chance of playing in the finals.

Although i think we have a better shot playing Tampa, i will enjoy playing the Rangers much more. Its much more like a Being one of the original teams plus being a New York team make it much more exciting to an old timer like me who remembers Brad Park and Jean Ratelle and Vic Hatfield. I am sure the Rangers are happy to be playing us instead of the Devils but hopefully we will make them sorry for wishing that. Tampas goalie played very good tonite or we win in regulation. They cant say he sucked in this one.
