Aimless effort vs. Pens

Dear God,

I don’t pray often … in fact, most of my prayers were the “If you help me live through this, I’ll never do it again” variety in college. You knew I was kinda kidding, right?

Anway, back on topic.

Dear God,

Please tell me an entire hockey season can’t come down to a goal like this. It can’t right? A guy takes a back-handed swipe at a loose puck, and it bounces off the end boards and over the goalie’s leg, landing on edge just inside the goal line for a game-winning goal … something like that can’t derail an entire 82-game schedule, can it? These guys don’t deserve it. They’ve worked too hard and put in too much effort to build this franchise to this point.

Of course … it’s happened before. Steve Smith, anybody? Didn’t Chris Osgood give up a 70-footer to lose a playoff series?

Wow. I can’t recall feeling so empty after a game in a long while. Maybe not since Terry Pendleton hit a HR off Roger McDowell in the third-to-last game of the ‘87 season to all but eliminate the Mets. That one hurt. This one hurt. That lucky sonofagun Staal …

So now the pressure is on. If indeed this is basically the first round of the playoffs, then we are down 0-1. We need to win four of the next/last six games, in my opinion. Or we’re gonna need some help. And so far, help has not been forthcoming.

We’ll need to channel some serious ill-will in Tampa Bay’s direction tonight; we need our old friend The Heater to help us out.

My one observation of this team over the past two days is this … and it’s a scary observation: Over the past two games, this team has reminded me of the Curt Fraser years. We’re not controlling the play in any facet. The action is always in our end, constant pressure … and we’re just playing for whatever offensive scraps fall off the table. There is no rhythm on offense, no sense of objective … just guys flying in on transition and looking for a lucky bounce. Our shots have a sense of desperation, like, please find a hole, please let the goalie bobble it. In short, we are not in control, like we’re waiting for the hand of God to come down and scooch us into the playoffs. And as we saw today, God clearly is not on our side.

Don Waddell did his job. He put the pieces in Bob Hartley’s hands. Now it’s up to Hartley to get these guys scoring goals again.

Game 2 is Wednesday.

That goal was awful, but we didn’t deserve to win the game anyway. Kari was spectacular for most of the afternoon, but the team gave him very little support. We continue to give the puck away in our own zone. We did generate some decent offensive chances, but Thibeault was solid, and we couldn’t sustain any pressure. The Pens, on the other hand, were able to tilt the ice and pin us in our own zone throughout the game. We had moments of looking very rec-league.

What in the heck happened to the team that went 7-2 after the trade deadline?

I went to the game against the Sharks the other night and I thought I had gone back in time 4 years….

They were terrible. Turning the puck over left and right, getting abused on the boards, missing open passes, did I say turning the puck over? I felt bad for Kari and Moose after they put him in.

It was one of the most listless, ugliest games I’ve seen them play in a long time.

I hope they get out of this funk fast.

If we miss the playoffs this year it will be an absolute colossal choke job.

Ottawa won, but ALL the other teams we need to LOSE did not, Toronto/NYR/NYI Carolina, They want in the playoffs…We DO NOT.

We are taking on water FAST and without life jackets…

Hartley should be embarrased to say he was pleased with the effort… If again was AWFUL, NO scoring against a team with a suspect defense, but where are all our “Big GUNS”???????????????

TB plays tuesday, Fl is a loss, Toronto is GAINING GROUND FAST, they will win, we will give up in Boston, as well as Washington, get BOMBED in Carolina and TB will nail the coffin SHUT on the last day.

It has been a better than average season, we even got excited about the playoffs, but facts are facts, this team cannot win in the clutch and do what it needs too, to win.

Poor drafting has KILLED us, we are the oldest team in the NHL, That is BAD, and when our 40 year old guy scores the ONLY goal… well do we really want the playoffs, just to be disappointed again ??????

Maybe The Kansas City Thrashers in another year or two… But one thing is FOR SURE… DUMB waddell has to GO !

Sori Letemin outdid himself! Not even a third rate amateur goaltender on a second rate team would have allowed such a CRITICAL goal in such a CRITICAL showdown. What the hell was he thinking? Do not tell me about his other stellar saves! They do not mean a damn thing in the overall picture. Mike Vick is a coach killer! Is Sori Letemin a playoff killer? The next few games will tell. NO EXCUSE FOR GOAL! Unless, of course, the price was right.

Last year, the “experts” all had Pittsburgh winning the Eastern Conference. They finished much farther south. This year, they have become the type of team that most of those experts anticipated. Nobody wants to face Pittsburgh in the opening round.

I really thought Atlanta would hang on for one (1) point, at least. It’s disappointing that they lost. But losing to Pittsburgh and San Jose is not quite the same thing as losing to Florida and Philly. Unfortunately, they’ll have to think about it for while. No games ‘til Wednesday.

Now, we root for other teams, especially Tampa Bay, to lose.

Oops, I meant Wednesday, Brendan, thanks for correcting me. I’m going to go correct that.

Unfortunately, it does us no good to say, “Well, there’s no shame in losing to a good team like that” … because we’ve lost that luxury. We need every point on the board, so the quality of the opponent is moot. We must win.

By Tom

March 24, 2007 11:12 PM | Link to this

Thats correct Iceman.

We are in Playoff mode, all of our opponents will be good teams. The only way to beat a good team is to play well and with more heart and soul.

Today’s game following the San Jose game left me wondering about our chances in the playoffs if this is the effort we will give. I just felt blah…

Fortunately for me the Pee Wee Team I coach played at 5 pm and showed the effort that the Thrashers did not. We were down to a hot goalie 2-0 and came back with 3 unanswered goals to win the game. The boys played their hearts out as a team and worked so hard I was beaming with pride for them.

I almost wished the Thrashers had a chance to see how hard these kids worked for a win.

By stendec

March 24, 2007 11:17 PM | Link to this

My POINT is this. As Ice Man said. The Thrashers played poorly in the loss to San Jose. The Thrashers played semi-well in the loss to Pittsburgh. Bottom line - BOTH WERE LOSSES! The Thrashers need points. Two losses. NO POINTS! Are the Thrashers en route to a choke job of New York Yankee proportions? Sori Letemin skated them toward that with that marshmallow game-losing goal!

Dear Atlanta Fans! It is hard to say, but we are going to be out of PLAY OFFs on this season. We were palying very well, but when time is very critical our Team can not work out together. I am not a future teller, but I am telling you, Our team will get 90-92 points and blow PO spot. Hartly will be fired and I really like to see this. Our GM did all what he could to make a strong team, but Head Coach did not take support. I could not believe that we are going to lose PO, but it will happend. Only one chanse we have, taht games on next week. If we will win those games (all of that) we will be OK. But we will lose one and expect it will against Florida and Toronto. I will say: “See Blue Land for next year!” ;-(

Get a grip. We’re down 1-0 in the best of 7, this is coming down to that final game v. the Boltz and then we’re battle tested entering the playoffs.

By Brendan

March 24, 2007 11:34 PM | Link to this

Folks, we’re gonna take 7/8 from Florida, Toronto, Boston and Washington. After that, we’ll be in. We just won’t know what seed.

I realize that Atlanta needs points in games, irrespective of the logo on the jersey of the opposing team. My point is, losses to “bubble teams” are harder to accept than losses to division leaders or 2nd place clubs. But, I agree that losses in regulation time won’t get this club any closer to the playoffs.

I don’t see any need to panic. Not yet. If they lay an egg vs. Florida, Toronto, and Boston, I’ll have to scratch my head and wonder what’s happening inside the Thrashers lockerroom. These are skilled hockey players who are professionals.

I suspect that the consequences for a playoff failure will be profound and far-reaching.

While we have been watching the Bolts, the Canes have been closing fast, only four points back. The games on April 6 and 7 are looking more important by the day.

“Boo hoo!” for the Thrashers? For the lousing luck or officiating? Nope. Not here.

The playoffs are coming. We will play the games with or without good goaltending, bad bounces, or excellent trade deadline deals. One game lost? Two games lost? Three games lost? I don’t think so. The Bolts don’t matter. The Canes are out at sea. The Stanley Cup is comin’ to our home.

With Sim lost to the team, it is time for other leaders. Join me and spark Ilya Kovalchuk. And this is why: Sim provided the energy for Ilya game after game. Now it’s time for Ilya to come forward and make a statement about Sim’s sacrifice. Be it in the locker room or in scoring goals, Ilya Kovalchuk can make the difference at the close of this season. Seven games left? That sounds like fourteen points to me.

Go Thrashers!!!

Brenden,

No playoffs… The AGE Factor is now KILLING us,plus we are a VERY SLOW team.

SJ Skated rings around us and Pitt the same, but losing 4 to Philadelphia is what in the end will be the difference.

If we had 6 of those points, we would make it… But we got only 1.

We will NOT make the playoffs, not enough FIRE in this team any longer.

Willl likely finish in 10th place, maybe 11th.

I predict waddell gone before Hartley, No playoffs next season Hartley goes.

No playoffs the following season The Team Moves.

It is that critical to the fair weather fans in Atlanta.

Poor efforts have killed us.

With FL on Wednesday, sit sutton play McCarthy for crying OUT LOUD !

They are NOT a tough physical team, and have SPEED, sutton gave a goal to them last time.

Someone post this MEMO on Bob’s door.

This is the largest collection of whiners I’ve ever seen. Anyone who actually believes that the Thrashers will lose the remainder of their games needs to get a freaking grip. All of these games are against terrible teams until the last two. Any fan whose team is four points ahead in the playoff race with this few games left that honestly thinks their team is not gonna make the playoffs when the rest of their schedule consists of complete dreck other than two games (and I really have to ask how good Carolina is, too) is no fan at all. Check yourselves, people!

I am most upset with the post game comments.

Lehtonen calls it a “monkey puck”, well perhaps if he had actually been paying attention to the game instead of daydreaming while looking up ice he might have been in proper position to stop this “monkey puck”

Mellanby and Hartley say this was “as strong of a team game” as they have played in a while.

It makes me wonder if they know the definition of “strong” or “team”.

To be honest I am not surprised at Mellanby’s reaction, the puck miraculously ended up on his stick in front of a practically empty net and he figured out how to get it in. He must be deliriously happy.

However Hartley should be able to recognise a poor effort when he sees one. There was little positive to take out of that game, but if Hartley is going to sugarcoat it..bad news for the Thrashers next time they get on the ice. They might think that sloppy uninspired play is acceptable down the stretch.

Whatever happened to “Over-react-fan”? Nicolas, and others, I agree the sky is not falling,…but some nasty clouds could be gathering.

We are in the thick of it now,..and the team needs to respond. Because of the success early in the season (and immediately after the trade deadline)we are in a position to “hold our own” and not have to overtake anyone. (Still those last second losses and 3rd period collapses trouble me.)

Despite our team’s age…I think the rest of the season is more of a “head game.” In the past winning streaks have be followed by l_ _ ing (I can’t bring myself to type it) streaks. Granted that was before the trade deadline. Now is the time for our team to show what it is made of. UFAs have the most to lose. They should be playing as if there is no tomorrow (there may not be,..right?).

As a fan, I’m not sure there is anything I can realistically do. Howecer, rest assured all my good luck tokens are in place.

The 2nd season is almost at hand and I want to have my boys in blue to cheer for.

I’m not in any comfort zone..but as a fam of the game…it doesn’t get any better than this (not in the regular season).

TOM - Congrats to your Pee Wee squad,…out Bantams won it all yesterday in the 8:35 game.

I really scratch my head at all the “were not going to make the playoffs” whining going on.

For crying out loud folks, it’s not like we just dropped a 6-1 bomb to Washington or LA. Puh-LEEZE! We just lost back to back games for the first time this month and the first back to back games with no points since the western Canada road trip.

Get a grip, folks.

Nobody said this was going to be easy down the stretch.

DW’s gotta go???? give me a break. The man pulled off the best string of deals then just about anyone else at the deadline, gave the the needed boost for this playoff run. DW has done just fine this year. He did everything those in here were complaining for him to do,…and more.

I’m still on board the bandwagon,…those of you jumping off, please be careful on your dismount.

Can anyone else believe that LAC hasn’t been found dead in an abandoned warehouse after having hanged himself?

If I had that pessimistic view of life I would have offed myself years ago. What can you possibly have to live for if you truly think that things are that bad, kid?

Geez! “Lighten up Francis!”

Thrashers will make the playoffs and I still have lots of hope that they will clinch the SE division by next Saturday. I’m saying they only lose two more games in the regular season.

P.S. Does anyone else think it would be a good idea to re-up Hoss this off-season and try to snatch his brother away from the Rangers? I know Marcel is not nearly as good as Marian, but he’s decent and the two of them have to have incredible chemistry.

Everyone is sounding like I did last season, and I caught crap for it. 6 games remain. The east is coming down to the last game. Deep Breaths! They’ll make it in, as far as the quality of play when they get there……it’s open for debate.

To Thrashers27 I like your schedule, but I think it will be Florida lose also. Florida play very well lately. I do not think we will get 2 points from Florida. About Marcel Hossa it will be Great Idea, because Brothers are Brothers. Chemistry is already done for very many years. But I think he is not free from Ranger.

see.. this is the nonsense I don’t like. how in the hell can you say it was a bad game? the goalies were great and we lost on a fluke. Pitt doesn’t stink, by the way… so playing a great offense that well is a GOOD sign, not a bad one. One soft goal that cost us a point. Not a terrible game.
Then again, our offense is supposed to be just as good and it wasn’t, but to hang in there like that is no cause for panic.

Can we all look forward to the FIRE HARTLEY chants now? Is Don off the block?

Hey Ruskie! Yeah, I think it would be a great move. Marcel on the left and and Marian on the right. Look out Sedin twins!!! If I’m not mistaken I think Marcel just re-upped his contract with the Rangers, but I think he could be pryed away from them…I agree with you that Florida has played well lately, but I don’t think they’ll have it in ‘em. They played a tough game last night against N.J. and will play Tampa the night before facing our boys in blue.

Yeah, I wasn’t making a comment on how we’ll do once we get in (jury’s still out on that one). And is it technically possible that we don’t make the playoffs? Sure, we’re not mathematically in yet (nor is any team other than Buffalo, I would like to point out.) But to be sitting here with a two-point division lead, four points ahead of the final playoff spot with this few games to go and to be throwing the towel in as far as even making the playoffs is complete madness. I expect that kind of crap from the Toronto or Buffalo fans that flame this blog, but not from people who actually consider themselves Thrashers fans.

Dude,

calm down…Staal version 1.2 is having one of the singuarly best rookie seasons in recent memory. No he’s not quite up to Sid & A.O.’s romp through the stat sheet, or even his teammate Malkin’s numbers-but let’s look at the rolle this Staal is fufilling for his Penguins squad.

The kid kills penalties (as a rookie!!!) and if I’m not mistaken, he leads the league in shorties (no really)!!! If he isn’t leading the league in SHG, then he definitely is up there-wait I’ll just check…yes he does with 7 SHG! That’s just silly. I mean we all have seen one of the league’s premier short-handed threats in Hoss…Staal’s SH numbers say he’s even better than #18!!! So he got a very flukey goal past The Kid…just watch that video again and realize that it is just that: a very flukey goal.

The Penguins are a very talented club playing with tremendous confidence right now-the pundits keep comparing them favorably against the Gretzky/Coffey era Oilers…and you have to admit, they do seem awfully similar-Le Thrash is a veteran/older club, but they dealt with the youth and speed pretty well…definitely we do need to tighten things up, and certainly the O-fense needs some tweaking…but good night folks, if I had told you in October that with 6 games left Le Thrash would be 1st in the division with a 2-point lead, lie to me and say that you wouldn’t take it and like our chances….now stay in that October state of mind-What if I then told you that Tkachuk was centering #17 and this guy Belanger kills penalties and skates well with Hoss & Slava-Matic? I bet you like our chances even more….but wait! Now let me tell “October 2K6” you that we dropped Vishnisky and got Alexi Zhitnik! It doesn’t end there-we also cut Niko Kappanen (he did look promising, but it didn’t work) and picked up Pascal Dupuis (he of the great wheels and a 20-goal scorer in this league)…lie to me and tell me you wouldn’t be hi-fiving your buddies and giddy with the prospect of a 3-seed in the playoffs.

Dude,

calm down

LET’S GO BLUE !!!
