Kovalchuk to target shoot
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In addition to playing in the All-Star Game, Ilya Kovalchuk will take part in the target shooting segment of the skills competition. The way he has been shooting lately, he might win it.
Carroll Rogers is covering the game tonight. I’ll be in Philadelphia for tomorrow’s game.
I did go to the skate today. As expected, it’s Kari Lehtonen in net tonight.

Boo hiss! I wanted Kovy to take part in the hardest shot competition - I’m dying to know how fast he rips that slapper from the point. ;)

Mario LeMieux called Ilya Kovalchuk “The best pure sniper in the NHL.” Based on that, I think the target shooting competition is almost of a foregone conclusion. Go Ilya!!

I missed the entire 1st period and half of the second, but I have to say … the French broadcast team didn’t slander the Thrashers. The closest thing they said, that I caught, was Kovalchuk seemed to be having an “off year” because of his production numbers. They also showed Bob Hartley in attendance, citing that he’d recently had some sort of surgery on his leg, knee or ankle. But was happy to be back in Atlanta. I didn’t quite catch it all. I wish I’d recorded it.
At the end, the French broadcast crew talked about how important it was to pick up points against the Thrashers, who they claimed played a “good enough to win” type of game. That’s not so bad. That’s probably as close to compliment as the Thrashers are apt to get from RDS.

Even if the Thrashers put together another 5-game winning streak, it doesn’t ABSOLVE the other 35 games. “Streaky” teams aren’t good teams. Teams that finish the season with less than 30 wins … aren’t good teams. That said, why can’t we just all just enjoy this little “blip” in the 82-game schedule? Carolina won tonight. Tampa Bay and Florida have been adding points with a little bit more frequency. I believe that Ottawa defeated the Capitals tonight.
I’m watching the Coyotes-Red Wings game, and Darren Pang has just been talking about Peverley being picked up by Atlanta. Pang said he’s always liked Peverley and thought he was a good player. Panger added, “But you have to be at or near the bottom of the league to pick up a player like that on waivers.” Translation: Atlanta’s a bad team, who consequently was in position to pick up a good player.

I am the greatest Thrasher of all time. Go buy my jersey and put some money aside for playoff tickets.
The AK-47 line is like The French Connection…..without any people from Quebec.

Don’t look now, but Jason Williams has scored for Columbus. That’s his 2nd goal since he joined them. “Fresh, new start” … yada, yada, yada, he never wanted to be here. I’m curious to know if Jason Williams fired his agent after signing with Atlanta.

which Thrasher is Gilbert Perrault, Rene Robert or Richard Martin ? how about which Thrasher is Jim Shonfeld ? If Komisarek would have taken any of them into the boards and hurt them like he did tonight with our guy, Shonfeld would have pounded #8 into the ground like a tent post.

Could you please ask Terrance Moore to hang it up! Like go get his keyboard bronzed or something, then maybe he’ll get a clue…Why on earth is he typing his jargon on my Thrashers page. Yes my, as in a fan who has watched every game that has been televised this season. Quite a bit different than the sports highlights that TM reviews before typing a bunch of babble. Go shove it TM!

hunterj6 — Are you surprised Moore had the comments for his article turned off?
“There were his various team captains before settling on just Kovalchuk.”
I thought that quote was telling of his level of attention to the Thrashers this season.

After the timer fiasco last season (where replays show Kovalchuk was faster than his head-to-head partner), I would want to see Kovalchuk in the Fastest Skater competition. I truly believe that he’d win (especially since Gaborik isn’t in the game). I’d like to see a head-to-head between Kovalchuk and Ovechkin though.
I’d also like to see Kovalchuk in the hardest shot competition…I don’t expect him to beat Chara, but I would say he shoots harder than Lecavalier from everything I’ve seen (wasn’t Lacavalier the runner-up last All-Star Game? Did he break 100?). However, I’m curious how much zip would be lost from Kovalchuk’s shot due to the puck being stationary, as opposed to one-timing the shot.
Finally, I’m curious if they’re going to give the players instructions on the Freestyle Shootout competition this year, or leave the players out there confused not knowing what to do (like last season). That was embarrassing to watch.

Hey dhj_1962 - take your racist comments to FoxNews.com. They do not belong here. Indeed, they don’t belong in America. Period.
What a pinhead.
Anyway, great to see the team playing with passion and chemistry. Pevs was an awesome pickup - reminds me of when we got Savard off of waivers.

ranallo, I think you’ll see the freestyle Breakaway Challenge greatly improved this year. Though last year’s was kinda lame, everybody saw the response Ovechkin got with his creative moves, and I think they’ll give more thought to it this time around. I’ll be curious to see, though, if anybody takes advantage of the ability to start from anywhere on the ice, or if they all go from center as they did last year.
Heatley and Savard are also in the target shooting contest…maybe they’ll end up battling it out in the final round. Speaking of those guys, I wonder if they’ll end up on the same line during the game. You’d have to think Julien would give it a shot.
