Hear Armstrong speak

In the unlikely event you’re not at Philips Arena tonight, you won’t want to miss the telecast of the Thrashers-Bruins game. Colby Armstrong will be wearing a microphone on his uniform, so you’ll be able to hear what gets said on the ice.

Well, you’ll get to hear some of it, anyway. The NHL wisely forbids live feeds from players wearing a wire. Even without Sean Avery on the ice, something might get said that’s not suitable for fans of all ages.

Anyway, I thought this would be a good place to enlist your help in predicting some of the things Armstrong will say or ought to say.

For example, “Excuse me, Mr. Chara, but that puck is mine,” or the old hockey favorite, “Have another doughnut.” (OK, so I’m dating myself with that last one. Google it if it doesn’t ring a bell.)

How can he be wearing a mike if the NHL prohibits it? Please explain. Happy that they’re not miking a Canadian or a European. Boston will come out smokin, we’ve got to be prepared for that early surge. Be nice to see us turn the tables on them and come out “en fuego”.

Jim — The NHL prohibits the live or “realtime” feed of said mic. They don’t want F-Bombs dropped on national television, so they use the sound bites during replays.

I love when they mic the guys during the All-Star games - that ends up being great stuff. The year Heater went and won the MVP, they had Roenick mic’d for that game and it was hilarious.

Army is definitely a great choice too - with his personality there’s bound to be some zingers. Well, if the team plays well anyway. If not…it may all be one continuous bleep.

Bob LOL I had forgotten that Glanville one. They ought to mic the coaches more often. Can you imagine Keenan with a mic on? Talk about one continuous bleep…

Tom, missing J.P.? I can fix that in two words. “Hockey stick.” Want Dellacamera summed up in one word: “Clearance.” Hmmn, or … “AT-lanna.” Well, it’s 6-2.

Yeah, yeah. But honestly, I thought the Thrashers had a decent second period. Maybe that was the Bruins lying back a bit … or just some hard work by the T-birds. Whatever momentum the team seemed to have was wiped out by the 5:00 Major against Joey Crabb.

Now, it’s 7-2. Well, we play Boston again tomorrow, right? In Boston. Positives … hmmn. Boris Valabik got his 1st NHL goal. Poor Moose. He inherited a 3-0 deficit. He’s hasn’t played horrendously. The team has had a lot of lapses, and a goal just went in off Valabik. But I digress, the 4th Boston goal is on Hedberg.

Which means?

It means if Atlanta scores a 3rd goal in this game, Hedberg’s “bailout” of Pavelec will actually tag Hedberg with the loss. Without another Thrasher goal, Pavelec is still the losing goalie of record. Pavelec is back in net now. Moose is fuming on the bench.

By Nikita

December 12, 2008 9:54 PM | Link to this

And Kozlov scores. So, Moose will be the losing goalie, tonight. Ya have to feel for that man. Seriously, what keeps him from requesting a trade to a team headed towards the playoffs? He must love Atlanta. I mean, living here. He gets relatively low goal support. “Backchecking” isn’t in the vocabulary of several Thrasher players. Moose tossed us a bone by signing here in the final days of June. On July 1, 2008, Hedberg would received several offers to be a backup goalie. At his price tag, all 30 teams could afford him. I hope Johan still thinks he made the right choice by staying with Atlanta. I wouldn’t hold it against Hedberg if he asked to be traded.

I used to play the I Wish Reality Game too. Like Nikita. I would wish the Falcons were not behind by three touchdowns because two of the touchdowns were joke scores. Want the know something funny sad not funny ha ha? The damn score NEVER changed one iota! Despite all my wishes. What really steams me is some of the most pathetic Toiletlid debacles have been showcased on home ice! Take that up the (SE) fans. My how other teams must fear (relish) visits to Atlanta. The Thrashers have a black cloud following them.

This team has no good luck goings its way.

The other night the Thrashers score two fantastic goals, and the Rangers get two really flukey goals and win in OT.

Tonight the Thrashers dominate the Bruins for almost the entire 2nd period, and not only do they not get a goal out of it….but they end up getting a bogus 5 minute major called against them that pretty much ends the game.

How many bad bounces can the Thrashers really get this year. It feels like they are due for a 10 game winning streak after the mountain of bad bounces, bad calls, and freakish misdirections that go against them.

Yep. We play worst on home ice. I’m going out, so I’ll save my analysis for later, but the sad thing about this game is that goaltending really made the huge negative difference. Shots against were good, shots on were good, faceoffs were good, and for a lot of the game the team looked pretty good. But Pavelec really played poorly, and Moose’s first goal he did not even see — it whipped right by his glove. Hideous.

By Mike Knobler

December 12, 2008 10:42 PM | Link to this

I asked John Anderson which goalie starts Saturday at Boston. He said he doesn’t have to make that decision tonight. It’s not an obvious call to me. Neither will be rested. Going with Pavelec is like having the guy who fell off the horse get right back on, which is usually a good thing. OTOH, the Bruins are a pretty wild horse to try to ride.

The “On the Fly” boys said, “It was as if we had two teams from two different leagues. That’s how OUTMATCHED Atlanta was tonight. The Bruins really have some depth now.”

Gee … is there really anything more to add?

Jameson, Crabb got a game misconduct for the hit, in addition to the five minutes. So, the official sure thought so. Remember, that’s Phil Kessell, a cancer survivor who is in the midst of a full career resurrection. If anyone breathes on him with acrid odor, it’s a 2:00 penalty.

I really wonder if the On The Fly guys even watched the game with the comments they made after this game, or if they just looked at the box score and highlights before they made their comments.

Outside of the goaltending the Thrashers and Bruins were pretty evenly matched tonight, in fact the Thrashers had the better 2nd period until that garbage major call on Crabb.

By Brendan

December 12, 2008 11:29 PM | Link to this

B.Thenet, I liked the 2nd stanza. Lots of effort. Good intensity. Just no goals. But for a 60-minute game?, that effort wasn’t there. Dude, the Thrashers never had a prayer of pulling this off, even if you took for three “quickies” away. Atlanta went into the 3rd period down, 4-1. A popular sentiment and strategy would be, “look guys, let’s just see if we can win this period against the Conference leaders.” And they didn’t even come close to doing that. They lost the 3rd period, 3-2. They didn’t shut Boston down, when all the Bruins had to do … was run out the clock.

Think about it. Think HARDER.

Boston doesn’t suck. One glance at the standings ought to tell us that. We were embarrassed. Yes, it snowballed. And yes, I honestly think the Thrashers aren’t four goal WORSE than the Bruins. But to say we’re evenly matched with the Bruins … would take a decisive win on Saturday Night to have credibility.

In 2006, the Bruins began their rebuilding. They spent big on Chara ($7.5M). They spent $5 million on Savard. They drafted Kessell, 5th overall. They picked up Milan Lucic, 50th overall. Boston named Peter Chiarelli, from Ottawa, as their next GM in May 2006. He picked Claude Julien, from the Devils, to be his Head Coach. Remember, Lou Lamoriello fired Julien 79-games into the season? Anywho, once Boston was rid of the Village Idiot, Harry Sinden, things got better for them. May the SAME happen to us!!!! (Lord, hear our prayer!!)

If Atlanta is routed by Boston again Saturday night, what more is there to say?

By Nikita

December 13, 2008 12:10 AM | Link to this

Brendan, I gotta disagree here. By pretty much every statistical measure Atlanta actually did very well tonight. I felt they didn’t look good for short periods of the evening, and there is no denying that Boston is a physically much larger and faster team. But we did fine other than in goal.

Also, it was very chippy, and I was pleased to see Atlanta controlling Boston and keeping them in their own end for relatively long stretches.

Our goalies faced fewer shots, and allowed more of them. That killed us. It bears noting that Boston’s goalie is a very good one who doesn’t allow many shots — but Moose and Pavs allowed too many under any conditions. I suspect Moose was very tired. I continue to believe that Pavs isn’t ready to play many NHL minutes — his technique leaves the net too vulnerable if the opposing team is reasonably good with rebounds.

By Jason

December 13, 2008 12:28 AM | Link to this

Unfortunately, I feel like the Thrashers are the Village Idiot every year, and it’s not gonna change anytime soon, outside of a miracle. I watched Waddell sitting high up in his pearch all night hoping he would be so disgusted in his creation, that he would suddenly decide to end the maddness and jump. No such luck.

I sat in front of former Hawk and NBA player Jon Barry tonight, he was cheering on the Thrash, but even he was suprised how easily they put themselves into a hole. I told him I was running out of energy and adjectives to describe my disapointment in this team and organization.

That said, I don’t pin this crappy team on Anderson still.

I also refuse to recognize his name as he won’t be here too long…Why bother with names?

Well, I’ll say this, Nikita. Let’s see how it plays out tonight in Boston. Maybe, statistically speaking, the score will be closer than 7-3. I think it will. These guys have to show some mettle. There must be consequences for poor play or effort. Meaning? Well, yeah. Players must be denied ice time, or even demoted, for poor play. Especially consistently poor play. Maybe, to the point, where they could be subjected to a waiver claim.

dhj & co, mock me all you want. But in this case I am correct. The Thrash played a fine (though of course not perfect) game last night with the exception of the goalies. There’s no place in the world where allowing 2/3rds of shots to hit the net is acceptable, and it lost us the game.

Honestly, I’m thinking Exelby, Nikita. Well, up to the pressbox, not to the minors. He could be claimed off waivers. If we’re going to lose Exelby, I’d at least want to try to package him in a deal at the trade deadline. (Ex has a year left on his contract, I believe.) Losing players … for salary relief … when the salary relief is $1.3 million, is like scraping off one square-inch of an iced over windshield, in mid-January, in Wisconsin. Okay, you warm weather equivalent? Hmmmn. It’s like peeing in the ocean, in mid-July. What did it accomplish? Especially when the team is $10 million under the cap.

Right about, ohhh, say nowwwwww … someone will chime in, “But Brendan! But Brendan!! The cap is gonna shrink. And we’ll have all that space, when other, BETTER teams, won’t!”

Ahhhhhhhhh. Look, uhh … there’s merit in that argument, provisionally. And the provisions are two fold … (1) the team is competently run by someone with a proven track record of success, and (2) that the ownership will “greenlight” spending to the max cap to give the Atlanta market a fighting chance to get deep into the playoffs.

Looking around … hoo boy (TM, poster Bob, all rights reserved), we’re looking at an O-fer. As in, “O” for “2.” More commonly expressed thusly, 0-2. Although I hate this expression, “It’s like putting lipstick on a pig.” What is goal? To have the best looking pig at the beauty pageant? If so, BANG! Mission accomplished. Atlanta wins the “Lipstick on a Pig” Award. The Atlanta Spirit, Limited Liability Corporation, owning a hockey team is a lot like the mule with the spinning wheel. Nobody knows how they got, and darned if they know what to do with it. Once you understand this, you have arrived.

I’m not going to bother countering mockery. Particularly since you’re mocking me for looking at the things that matter, as opposed to the things that are secondary, if you’re trying to improve the team. Wins are great. I want to win. But I’m not going to slam the team for last night’s game like I did after Philly or Boston last year, because the team did not play like losers. I’m also not slamming them for NYR earlier this week.

Last night the team was chippy and prevailed in every statistical measure except those pertaining to the goalies. The loss is behind us, but we can build on the stats.

Brendan, I’m sorry. I failed to note that it goes without saying that Erik Christensen and Garnet Exelby should be first off the ice. But I thought Williams kinda sucked last night.

IMO, we should trade and/or buy the pieces we need. Those I would suggest we consider trading/waiving/whatever include: EC, Ex (first — these two absolutely need to go), Havelid, and Slater.

Williams, who is in his ‘contract year,’ is not putting up the type of campaign that he wanted. But, there’s still two-thirds of the season to go. But if Williams, Reasoner, Christensen don’t get back on the ice, and perform capably once there, they’re not going to get the kind of contracts that they’d hoped for.

glances over the blog comments

If it’s not the same morons snatching up months-old comments. “Coach Sunshine?” Living in the past isn’t fixing anything. You call yourself a “Sage?” More like “Fool.” You failed to look at the “antonym” section of the dictionary when you were looking at words for your username, because “wise” you aren’t.

We also have idiots who talk in all-caps and think they’re getting their point across. No, you just look bloody stupid. And speaking of English slang, you’re not amusing anyone with your failed impersonation of a Briton. You laugh, but it’s likely you caught your reflection in your computer monitor instead.

And then there’s Stendec, The Dysfunctional Tourette’s Patient. Need I say more?

Thankfully, there are a few reasonable people still left here. Yes, this franchise has a lot of problems. People differ on who we really need to get rid of. People who list players that need to be sent away aren’t thinking big enough. We have a general manager and an ownership group, both of whom have arguably caused our problems. Focus on the bigger picture, then hone in on the players who fail to perform in their roles.

Unfortunately, these words will have no effect. The Fool of Blueland will continue to blather on stupidly, the all-caps morons will continue to look like morons while failing to spend $10 on a new keyboard, and our Tourette’s patient will continue to (SE) about our (SE) team.

I hope you people get a grip, while you still can.

Gee, what sage advice…I never would have thought of your salient points at all…Thank you for gracing us with your, ummm, ‘intellect’, sport…

By the way, what’s an antonym?

Try again.

Antonym.

an⋅to⋅nym –noun a word opposite in meaning to another. Fast is an antonym of slow.

Fool is an antonym of sage.

The English language doesn’t seem to be your strong point. You should go study the liberal arts. Or just sit here and continue looking like an idiot. The latter will undoubtedly be your selection, as you’ve proven time and time again.

If the poll is any indication then I am not the only one that wants What’s-His-Name the Hell out of Atlanta. Perhaps the Toiletlids will only lose by two or three goals tonight in Beantown. Apologists will rejoice. They will drone mindlessly about misleading statistics to prove their pointless points as losses continue to pile up. Condone ineptitude. Embrace failure! The apologist creed. Enjoy the game. Yes, I will be online. I know, I know. Merry Christmas anyway!

Why, someone as intelligent as you, resorting to swearing? I am shocked and appalled, dear Fool!

Can you go back to doing something you’re good at?

Wait… what is it you’re good at doing, again? It seems all that you do is bloviate about the same things on a daily basis.

Bloviate might be another word you’re unfamiliar with. Don’t hesitate to use a book of reference before asking a stupid question, this time, my Foolish friend.

dear bag of nuts, i typed in caps because i didn’t feel like changing to lower case. since i don’t claim to be a english major, i could care less about punctuation, spelling,(antonym, you mispelled it the first time, then corrected it, like anyone cares). proper english and all that crap does not matter in here. is anyone getting paid? i can not see myself in my computer screen because it is dirty and covered with dust.

We’re getting to game time, so it appears that anticipation of another loss this evening is bringing out the hatred in everyone, isn’t it?

You all must not like having a good look in the mirror at yourselves. A pity, that is.
