Make your predictions here

Will the new Kovalchuk-Reasoner-Thorburn line:

A) Score tonight.

B) Score tomorrow.

C) Be disbanded by the time the team returns to the United States.

D) Both A and B.

E) Reinvent hockey, end world hunger and advise Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton on Russian-American-Canadian relations.

Will Eric Perrin flourish back home tonight and Todd White in his homecoming on Wednesday?

A) Bien sur.

B) Je ne sais pas.

C) No, but I hear Byron Young will save the day.

D) Oui, parce que Ron Burgundy le dit, et j’ai confiance en lui.

E) If I wanted to read a blog in French, I wouldn’t be reading ajc.com.

Tony C. asked on the last blog about Ron Hainsey. He left the ice Sunday afternoon after getting zinged by a puck somewhere on the arm, went up the tunnel, came back and kept playing. He practiced Monday. I expect him to play tonight. He’s had a run of bumps lately, with a cut on the calf and a puck to the ankle the other night at Washington. He is one player the Thrashers definitely don’t need to lose.

I’m in Canada but not yet in Montreal, so I have no news from the skate. Will update if there is any news pregame.

I’ll say Reasoner gets a rebound goal from a Kovy slapshot… Thorburn will have two chances to do the same and will miss both times. All in all, we’ll see a lot of energy and chances from that line, tonight… but it won’t work tomorrow, or saturday and they’ll be back to the drawing board again.

I hope Waddell is on the phone with some of these teams looking at Sundin, like the NY Rangers… trade Perrin and picks for Zherdev… trade Lehtonen to Ottawa for Vermette… let’s keep getting younger, and build a top line that makes sense.

Kovalchuk Vermette Zherdev

I will take option A - Score tonight. Also I think we are going to win game today. IT WILL BE Show Off by Ilia Kovalchuk. He did show for Toronto, because Leafs are asking for him to Don. Also Montreal is interesting for Kovy. It is a same scenario what Hossa did. Show off in Detroit and play in Red Wings. to Hokie Nobody from Ottawa or NYR or any other NHL teams give us good players for NOTHING. Ducks did take our Crap (Klee and Larsen), but they gave Expencive Crap for us.

If Thor opens up the ice for Kovy by playing hard down low, that will be a welcomed sight and is exactly what Kovy needs. Whether or not they get a score off of it, I don’t know but the chances will help the entire team and may allow another line to score.

Tonight’s game is going to be a tough one.

B & C. I like the makeup of the new lines. On paper Williams, Crush, & Army looks pretty good. If the first two can find their stride we could be rolling three above average scoring lines and a good energy line.

The game shows to be televised nationally, but is not showing any listing. I assume it means its in Canada only? :o( How do the blackout rules work on directv centerice?

It would work exactly the same as the Anaheim/Schneider deal… if NY wants Sundin, they’ll have to move legitimate money without taking much in return… we have cap space to accommodate them.

Does Alex Bourret for Pascal Dupuis ring a bell? :) It’s time to rob the NY barn again.

i have said this over and over, so here it is again, Kovy needs to shoot, shoot and shoot some more. to hell with passing, every team needs a go to guy, look at basketball teams, everyone needs a shooter, if a shooter shoots, guess what, the guys who rebound know what to do. it is that simple. simple. simple. its not rocket science. the white-kozlov and little line can stay with in JA system, but not ANY line with Kovy on it!!!

As long as we stay out of the penalty box, i see this line scoring some points. Either Kovy gets a breakout pass from Reasoner that he puts home or Reasoner scores off a rebound from a Kovy Slapshot….or Reasoner spends 5 plus minutes on the PK and we don’t see that line at all!!

The answers are “A” and “A.” Eric Perrin is a pending UFA, so I’m sure he’d like to audition for les bleus, blancs, et rouges.

To be honest, I’m tired of band aids. Time to blow it up. We need to trade Kovy right now- when we can get the most for him. I hate saying that, but there is NO WAY he re-signs after next year. He’s shown no desire to be a leader, the face of the organization or anything else we need him to be.

Just like the Braves back in the 70’s to their 1 or 2 highly paid players = “We coulda finished last withou ya”

Angelo Esposito just walked past me in the press box. The Thrashers prospect is having an excellent season, leading the Juniors de Montreal with 12 goals in only 18 games played. He also has played for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League all-stars in a series against Russia. He doesn’t turn 20 until February and could be a key part of the Thrashers’ future.

By Mike Knobler

December 2, 2008 7:34 PM | Link to this

By the way, the reason Esposito has played only 18 games is he broke his hand when he hit an opponent in the helmet. His aim with the puck has been significantly better.

By Bob

December 2, 2008 8:31 PM | Link to this

The boys are hustling, but we’re just getting outplayed here. Their trap is giving our boys fits. Kovy looks completely out of place with Reasoner and Thorburn. It’s pretty funny how he keeps overstaying his shifts, best chance was when he was out there with White at the end of the 1st. White got manhandled by their rookie in giving up that goal.

By Nikita

December 2, 2008 8:35 PM | Link to this

I’m listening, so not entirely sure. But it sounds as thought the K/R/T line is doing reasonably well. There was a nice sequence earlier in which JKovalchuk and Reasoner got multiple rebounds from Price, but couldn’t put it in. Thorbs had a weak wrister on goal. So…sounds o.k.

The 3rd and 4th don’t sound great, though. Sounds like the 3rd is slippy, and the 4th is getting manhandled.

Incidentally, the goal against was on the Little/White/Russian line.

And the one thing that looks good so far is faceoffs. Atlanta’s doing much better than Montreal in that regard.

Um, WOW. That was BAAAAAAAD. Thank god the 2nd is over.

Here’s what I got on the second:

Perrin’s playing great. So is Havelid.

The Koz/Little/White line is getting its a* handed to it.

Penalties, boys. Need to work on it. But, that said, kudos to the kiddos (Slater/Thorbs) for attempting to get something started.

Almost had a Thorburn/Laraque fight, which would really have improved my outloon on this period.

For some reason, the team seems to be having trouble staying upright. Oystrick’s goal against was because he fell down. Ditto Exelby. Perrin nearly had a shorthanded breakaway…but he fell down.

Shots are evening out more. They were basically even in that period.

By Brendan

December 2, 2008 9:56 PM | Link to this

Flyers just defeated Tampa Bay in overtime. Huh? Yeah, I know. Philly led, 3-1, in the 3rd. They allowed two cheesy type goals by TB, including one by Downie, who was taking a measure of revenge against his former team.

6:30 left in the 3rd, Thrashers 3, Habs 3. If someone actually shot Pierre McGuire … not fatally, but close to it, would a jury really convict that person of attempted murder? ‘Cuz … I’m thinkin’ that the DEFENSE, at trial, goes something like this.

“Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury … how many of you are thinking about killing Pierre McGuire right now.” And awkward silence fills the courtroom. The defense attorney leans in, “Beeeee honnnest!” All the members of the jury box raise their hands, as well as all in attendance in the courtroom, including Pierre’s parents. The Defense Attorney smiles, “I rest my case.” The Judge bangs his gavel, “Case dismissed.”

Montreal 4, Atlanta 3. Havelid misplayed the puck. And the Montreal shot caromed in off the leg of Toby Enstrom.

I should have predicted this.

Another god damned loss.

How many ways can the Thrashers p** away a tie game with 10 minutes or less left in the 3rd period.

We have 4-5 NHL forwards on this team, the rest are waiver wire fodder. But this team is too cheap to send NHLers to the minors, so we are stuck with the bums we have.

Welcome to LAST PLACE Folks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are moving in the RIGHT DIRECTION !!!!!

I am HAPPY with where the team is NOW !!!!

It is TIME is NOW time for waddell to be GONE ! This team is awful.

These IDIOT owners better act and act now.

Williams and Slater HAVE TO GO !!!!!!

I am completely disgusted with what waddell has done to this team over his tenure. He in ABSOLUTELY THE WORST GM in history of the NHL !!!

How in GOD’S name can he remain to spread the cancer of losing he promotes ?

He is a CAREER LOSER and will never anything but that. He deserves NO respect from anyone, and he should be run out of town ASAP.

This game tonight showed our defense is BAD. Exleby also needs to hit the bricks…

Trades Trades Trades need to be made.

But letting waddell make them is mistake ONE.

Lastly pierre mcguire you SUCK ! His contempt for Atlanta is sick. Says #17 should leave when is contract is up, that we are a poor team, I do agree there, but he needs to keep his F’ing mouth shut.

Come on waddell lets meet in front of Philips and go at it, I win YOU leave town !!! Brenden as Ref !

Can’t believe I bought season tickets again to this slop! I’m the only one left of the group that started together and I won’t be returning next year. Phillips will be empty in Feb, March.

Owners who don’t care and a GM who has made questionable decisions. Waddell does deserve a large portion of the blame but I’m not sure that the owners aren’t the biggest culprit.

By Brendan

December 2, 2008 11:48 PM | Link to this

Russ, I’d like to see a fine HaveNot rant from you. Make it a good one! Ya know, in total seriousness, for a guy in his ‘contract year,’ Nic Havelid has been virtually invisible. Now, I’ll readily admit … I haven’t checked his stats. I don’t know what Havelid’s plus-minus (+/-) is this year. He might be one of the team leaders in that category. But he is invisible. Except for when the puck goes into our net. That’s usually when I notice him. If Nic doesn’t improve, his trade value won’t be much at the deadline. And that’s a shame, since I was seriously thinking that a pick somewhere between #50 and #69 might be in the offering back to Atlanta. Havelid is a pending UFA this Summer.

By Brendan

December 3, 2008 12:02 AM | Link to this

Kevin, there’s plenty of blame to go around. Waddell’s the constant since Day One. The many and various ownership incarnations have been nothing to write home about. The Coaching and strategy has been ‘suspect’ since Curt Fraser. Bob Hartley probably is a very fine coach, but he couldn’t implement his game plan with the roster he inherited. Waddell couldn’t even win past New Year’s Day behind the Thrasher bench. And clearly, it was HIS VISION that built the club.

Stop. If is WASN’T Waddell’s “concept/vision/strategy,” then whose was it? Okay. It’s a very deep and involved question. For clarity purposes, we’ll simplify. Here are some options for an answer. (A) Alf, (B) Mary Hartman, with behind the scenes help from Bob Newhart, (C) Jar-Jar Binks, (D) the entire cast of “Gilligan’s Island,” except for “Lovie,” aka Mrs. Howell, or (E) “Roger,” the space alien on “Family Guy?”

The heartless Toiletlids head into the game at Ottawa alone in last place in the league! Ain’t THAT a f+cking surprise? A total of 19 points in 24 games. Bravo fellows. What damn stars!

How putrid are these untalented quitters?

Three goals in 59 seconds were still just not enough to avert another close loss to keep all team apologists happy! Moose Lehtonen was abysmal between the pipes! Thanks again Moosie. Looking more and more like What’s-His-Name every game! How is YOUR back/groin/fill in blank feeling?

No redeeming features at all for this punchless band of ice rejects! As clueless as their brain-dead coach. Without any kind of redemption! As a seer told some fat cat rich woman in Seven Faces Of Dr Lao, “It would have been best had you never been born. Did nothing during your lifetime. Will leave no void in passing.” Or some crap to that effect!

What time DOES that bus for Poughkeepsie depart?

End of game thoughts, and no chicken littling:

Kovalchuk/Reasoner/Thorburn worked decently.

Eric Christensen needs to go. Not because he lacks talent, but because he lacks heart. The 4th goal in on him, and was made largely because he didn’t care enough to hustle it.

The checkers worked well, too.

Tonight’s game might be the best one Boris has ever played. He played the body, didn’t take any penalties, and was in the correct position.

Kozlov is GOD. The major reason being how well he sees the ice. Did you see that awesome goal, where he saw the shot, which at the time was moving at least 70+ mph, and he lifted his skate out of the way? Beautiful. Lightning fast reflexes and awesomeness positional awareness.

Hainsey is pretty badass, too.

You know, if the team played the first two like the third, the game would have been a blowout. Heck, even if the team had played the first like either of the other periods. It’s not about talent — it’s about mental toughness, determination, and work ethic,

Brendan, do you actually believe that the bumbling idiot Don Waddell actually had a “plan”?

He’s been winging it by the seat of his pants from day one. There’s been no coherent plan whatsoever—simply hope and pray that the draft picks pan out.

They didn’t. End of first “Five-Year Plan”.

Make some trades and pray they work. By and large, they didn’t.

To even associate the word “plan” with that lisping idiot and fraud of a GM gives him more credit than he deserves. It hints of organization. It hints of competence.

Where are all of the Waddellites? They seem to disappear at this time of year…

I’m amazed anyone even shows up at the games (well, outside of the other teams’ fans)…Based on the product served, this restaurant should have been condemned a long time ago.

(But Don still takes home a wonderful amount of money for doing absolutely nothing…People here could have run this franchise into the ground for much less!)

I completely agree, we looked awful all night. Except for that one minute in the 3rd where the Habs had a complete brain fart by only have 4 out against us on that first goal then froze up and let in two more quick ones. But that wasn’t anything other than a one minute messup by them, we looked awful last night.

Kovy looked completely frustrated. Defense looked pitiful. Havelid and Enstrom are like the Keystone Kops out there, how often did Enstrom get ridden off the puck or have his pocket picked? Just plain awful all around last night.

I have defended Don Waddell here, but it’s time to make a change. Hartley paid for his 0-6 start last year and now it’s time for the ONE constant this team has had since day one to be relieved of his duties. I have been to 5 games this year and will NOT be going back to any more of them. It’s alot of money in a bad economy for a bad on ice product.

Don Waddell - Please just resign and do the right thing. It’s over…

My expectations for this season weren’t high to begin with and they are only being set lower after each game. At least there will be a good chance to land Tavares, then we would get to enjoy him for 3-4 years before he excitedly exits the hockey abyss that is the Atlanta Thrashers.

By Nikita

December 3, 2008 10:54 AM | Link to this

*Nikita, are you the lady who sits right behind the bench in ATL?? *

No, alas. I’m the lady who is generally too busy to attend the games in ATL. Last night, for example, I listened to the first two periods on XM, then went home and did a quickish review of the game on Center Ice.

Also, you seem to think i’m stating something I did not actually state, which is that the team looked good in the third. It did not, but it looked sufficiently good to have won against a team that rarely seemed to have Atlanta on the ropes. (Which is an insult to the Habs — I see them struggling to get over .500 over the course of the season if they continue to play like they’ve been playing recently.) I’m noting that if the Thrash had, say, put up the same number of shots in the 1st that they put up in the 3rd, the chances are high that they would have scored sufficiently to beat the Habs. Or, you know, hustled. Or worked. Or attacked people on the puck. Any number of small changes would get this team into the W column more often.

But that brings me to another pet subject — something is seriously wrong with this team’s mental state. They’re capable of playing a better game, and a better game would be competitive (though not, I suspect, competitive enough to make playoffs). But they’re not playing it. We have obvious individual challenges, but we also have a team that thinks for some reason that they only need to do well enough — and well enough usually means the whole team attempts to check, and chase any leads generated. That is unacceptable and must stop.

Stendec did you watch the game last night? Moose kept us in it, played very well. The 4th goal was brutal, no communication and a lack of overall hustle, the 5th was an empty net. Ex, didn’t look good to me & EC needs to go (someone else said that). Frustrating, I see nothing out of the Hossa trade & that hurts. I was sitting, listening, watching & thinking man can you imagine if Kovy played with a stud. Then I remembered, heatly, hossa (studs) and a bunch of other guys who are on other teams now that were good, not studs. Frustrating for sure. It is time for Kari to be gone, let him play a month and see what you can get, I’m guessing not much at this point. A waste of the second overall pick. I’m sick to my stomach watching this team. Was at the Blues game Sunday, spent the 3rd period watching the steelers game, I couldn’t watch that team (thrashers) anymore. What has happened with Havlid? He’s regressing, along with Enstrom. It’s just a mess. Sorry, I hate being negative but it sucks. Going to the Thrashers game feels like going to a funeral. Sad for sure.

Wow, it is rough in here. If you think there was poor effort last night, you didnt watch. If you think there was no heart you know nothing about hockey. If you think there was a mistake on the 4th goal that really cost the team you hit it right on the head. If you think Moose was fantastic, he was except on the 4th goal. He got beat from over 20 feet with a clear line of sight. Usually you hear, “I bet he wished he could have that one back,” after a play like that. After seeing the Preds and the Blues games, I was happy with the effort and the heart. No points, but they fought until the last second ticked off the clock. Be a realist and enjoy NHL hockey. You can get frustrated by the losses as you are watching, but realize this team has very little NHL talent, and a questionable system of play, but has a bumper crop of young talent coming soon, and hopefully Tavares next year.

no one outside of ATL. wants don “the dud” wadell to leave. they know as long as he stays, the thrashers are a win for their team. Nikita, i’m glad thats not you, if it was, i’d tell you to lose some weight and bring the “HOT” blonde that sits next to you every home game. haha. maybe ATL can get Sean Avery cheap, him and Kari are best friends.

LAC, good point. I didn’t hear anything about Waddell going on that broadcast. Sucks for sure.

Sage of Bluesland, I stand corrected. Waddell flew by the seat of his pants, without a plan. The results speak for themselves. Other teams have a “concept” that they play, and on DRAFT DAY, select players that fit what they’re trying to do … beyond that of the “consensus” Top 5 to Top 10 picks in the draft.

“People here could have driven this team into the ground for much less.” Wow. I never quite thought of it in those terms, but yes. I don’t think any of us have ever Managed a pro hockey team to a single playoff win. So, in essence, we’re all “tied” with Waddell, in that regard.
