Bogosian makes progress
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I forgot to share one of the pieces of good news for the Thrashers I learned from Thursday night’s loss to the Penguins. I saw Zach Bogosian afterward, and he’s no longer wearing a brace on his broken leg. A second X-ray showed that healing is taking place, and Bogosian told me his rehab has picked up in the past week. It sounds like he’s on schedule for a December return.
A few other thoughts:
Eric Perrin’s versatility sure has come in handy. The Thrashers have played him on the left wing, at the start of the season, on the right wing with Eric Boulton and Jim Slater during the winning streak and at center Thursday night after Todd White got hurt and he’s likely to be back on the right wing Saturday night with Ilya Kovalchuk and Jason Williams when the Thrashers probably call on Erik Christensen to center for Slava Kozlov and Bryan Little in White’s place. “I’m pretty comfortable anywhere,” Perrin told me on Friday.
Thrashers coach John Anderson, on the hit that knocked White out of the game: “I don’t think it was a cheap hit, maybe a little late.”
More Anderson, on the Penguins’ physical play and the Thrashers’ response: “I wish we had initiated some more of that in our building. Knock ‘em down.”
On a personal note, I won’t be at Saturday night’s game. I’m headed to Philadelphia to run the marathon, my 14th. It’s the first regular-season game I’m missing, and Carroll Rogers will do a terrific job reporting on it for us. (She also wrote our story on the victory over the New York Islanders and on one of the exhibition games.) I’ll be back for Monday’s practice, walking gingerly.

That’s great news about Bogosian! I’m really hoping we see him on the ice again next month, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we didn’t see the kid until January.
On the center situation: If Christensen does indeed make an appearance at center on the second line, I hope he can produce and show the coach, as well as the rest of the team, exactly why he is a natural center. To me, he just doesn’t look comfortable on the right side. And it shows, given his goal production this year. Even Jimmy Slater scored a goal before he did, which should have made anti-Slater heads explode. Christensen is a talented individual, but I honestly think he’s not being utilized correctly.
As an aside, it’s kind of sad that White goes on what was paced to be his best year since he wore a Habs sweater, and he gets roughed up like that.
On your weekend plans: Good luck in the marathon, and here’s to hoping you pull out a win in Philadelphia. After all, someone from Atlanta has to! ;)

Good news about Bogosian. Team seems to be meshing pretty good but the PK is terrible. Not aggressive enough on the point. Teams comfortably set up against us. And, what in the world does Thorburn add to the team? I hope that Crabb shows well. Stuart or Lavallee should be here instead of Thorburn. Good luck in the marathon.

Mike, Good luck on the marathon! I’ve run one, crossed it off my bucket list and don’t have the urge to do another. The race itself was neat but it’s the training that gets monotanous. Running 14 shows you either enjoy the traning and/or don’t have much of a life (just kidding)! I’m curious though which one was your favorite?

On the PK, do we have stats on how each unit of the PK is doing? I am curious to see if the failure is universal, or restricted to a particular unit, particularly since one of the units is composed of people who are experienced and considered good on the PK and the other group is notably less so.

Congratulations on your fourth marathon. I have completed three and now retired from them. The training is long but rewarding after the race.
Our PK does need work but we do have the ability to improve. However I truly believe that the refs cost us the game against the Pens. They protect that sissy Sid the Kid cry baby and the rest of them. No call with the White hit, no interference call on Ex as he goes by our bench but one on Thorburn in front of our net. It’s time the refs have the eyes checked.
Best of luck on your fourth marathon, go for it.

Thrashers stinking up the ice once again! Will losing streak continue to live on? Could be. Players appear ready to fold! Pavs included. Early goal? PLEASE! Totally heartless and gutless first period gag job! Disappointing to the max. Can only hope team climbs out of commode soon. Ilya Kovalchuk could not hit the ice on a faceoff drop! Pitiful. GO FALCONS!

The no score offense of offensive genius John Petrino is working to perfection! Impotent Thrashers trail 1-0 after 40 minutes. Players seem completely uninterested in tying the score. Completely heartless effort to date. Another home debacle at Yuckland! Thrashers appear to have quit. Oh well. Why try to buck tradition? Is Ilya Kovalchuk EVER gong to live up to his hype? Sheesh. GO FALCONS!

Apologists must be overjoyed! Team played well. They will contend. Never gave up. They will scream. Pavs only gave up two goals. They will crow with delight. Ran up against a hot goalie. They will lie. Pleased with effort. They will gush. None of that feel good S++T mean a damn thing! Just another in the “L” column. Another block in the losing streak which may extend through the end of the season! Thrashers are quitters, losers, wimps, garbage, commode residue and talentles. Hell, they have become the damn Hawks! That, sadly, is the ultimate insult. Put What’s-His-Name back in goal. At least the losses will be secured early in each game. Heartache will not be prolonged. All right apologists, tell me again why I should embrace another putrid unacceptable defeat on HOME ice! F++K all of them.

Once again the size factor came into play. Columbus’ big boys wouldn’t let our runts penetrate to the net. I’m tired of seeing our guys knocked around like a ball in in pinball game. You’re not going to win many hockey games if you can’t crash the net. We can skate with with any team but when it starts to get plysical, game over. Whe the Thrashers get knocked out of their rhythm it’s like a Chinese fire drill. It’s obvious that our little guys can’t get the job done when they are getting thrown around like rag dolls.
An what about our supposively tough guys? Against the Pens Kovy tried to throw his weight around which is a bad idea and tonight Exelby? You gotta be kidding, right? Until we get someone who can move opposing players out of the way we will continue to take shot after shot from the blue line. Until we get someone who the opponents know will hit them and try to take their heads off if if he gets a chance it’s going the be the same type of game every night. It looks like we’re gonna have to get used to it because I think they’re perfectly happy with what they’ve got. Don Waddell’s thinking is to hell with the fans and to hell with what they think.

Donny’s done a heck of a job “building through the draft”, huh?
Yep, and Coach Sunshine’s “system”, if you can call it that, is really going to revolutionize the NHL and Bwuewand, eh?
Wake up, folks. That was the ‘real’ Thrashers last night. Stop subsidizing the incompetence.
(But, in case you continue to do so, Donny and Brucie thank you for your support!)

Terence Moore’s column satys volumes. This is a team at best with an identity that needs to change: - 500 win/loss% at best
A team that doesn’t play a full 60 minutes of hockey
A team that is mediocare at best, does not know how to win and may not have a desire to win… and may not have the right players to win
A team with a coach with more deisire to win then the players AFTER NINE YEARS OF REBUILDING WE ARE STILL REBUILDING. TO SAY THIS IS A DISAPPOINTMENT IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT!!

yet another thing that shows the lack of vision in building this club. Terence Moore’s article was spot on, there’s no identity of this club. Just a bunch of parts thrown together, that just don’t click, never have.

Did Stendec just admit (at least indirectly) that it does not matter who is in goal????? If so, great point. Many of us have been saying this for years. (this post might get long - remember I do not post often)
Simply put, this team lacks offensive and defensive talent to win consistently. ATL is not going to “outplay” many teams. ATL can only manage wins if: 1) opposing goalie has a bad night and allows 3-4 goals on 20-25 shots, OR 2) ATL goaltender (whomever it is) has a GREAT night and stops 95% or more of between 30-45 shots.
I ran the numbers last year and it proved true. Just in November this year - in the 5 ATL wins - all involved sub 90% save performances by opposing goaltender. In other words, not so much ATL = GOOD as it is opponent played BAD. The only game in which goaltending was the difference was PHIL. If moose stops 90% or greater, ATL wins.
The numbers proved it last year and prove it again this year - If ATL plays its “average” game and the opponent plays its “average” game - we lose (regardless of whether Pavs or KL is in net). We will allow 30-35 shots which equals 3 goals against an average/adequate performance in net. We will take 20-25 shots which equals 2 goals against an average/adequate performace on net. In a statistically average game, those extra shots and extra goal will probably come on a power play (we score on 18% -which is middle of the league but only kill 74% which is in the basement).
So - this means we simply lack TALENT on offense and defense. The trend has continued TOO LONG to say we are “developing.” The fact is that if everyone plays their NORMAL game - we lose.
Thanks - see you all in a few weeks. Happy thanksgiving.

Yep, I think this is a very accurate big picture look at this situation with this club. Just a basic underlying lack of talent.

Just get it over with and fire Waddell!!
Dump all his crappy role player/”team guys” also. Teacher Pet Slater and that Slack a$$ SCnheider, and that druggie goalie with the drinking problem and trade Kolvachuk for picks and bring back the Knights.
Waddell has f* us all!!
