Moose to start tonight
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Beautiful day in Buffalo. No, really.
Johan Hedberg is slated to start in net tonight for the Thrashers against Buffalo. Ondrej Pavelec is 2-0 as a starter, but he played last night, and Thrashers coach John Anderson decided to stick with his plans and use a rested goaltender. Kari Lehtonen is here, too, and told me he felt great during today’s skate, but Hedberg and Pavelec were the guys in net.
I’m off in search of the perfect beef on weck, the local sandwich of choice. Haven’t eaten since a 5 a.m. bagel.

Why not give the kid the start? He’ll be back in Chicago by Monday. He deserves the start tonight.

I disagree with this. Moose needs to be traded or waived. he has been just awful this season.

just maybe the thrashers play well enough in front of moose to get a win.

I don’t have a good feeling about this. Miller is on fire, and Moose has been less than stellar this season. They should’ve gone with Pavs.

I would have prefered Pavs tonight and Moose against Carolina. In recently history Carolina has lit up Kari like a Christmas tree, but Moose seems to play well against them. Of course can’t sit Kari for a whole week so I guess this is the best choice Anderson has for Moose tonight and assume Kari Sunday.

It’s time they stepped up in front of Moose, they owe him one after that stinker he dropped in his last outing

I agree, go with the hot hand. What have we got to lose? I love Moose and all, but he’s been rather shaky thus far. Seeing that we dont exactly have a full deck on defense right now, I sure would’nt want to play him against a juggernaut like Buffalo.
Its clear to see that its time for Pavs to be here full time. Who knows, maybe Moose could potentially be attractive come the deadline to a team needing some goalie depth. I’d gladly take a mid-round pick for him.

OH man!!! Bad call. Moose is going to play today. Well, this is a Head Coach call. I think he knows what he is doing. Ok if he wants to stay with Moose, let him play, but if score will be 0:2 Buffalo he has to change a Moose. Another side Moose needs to prove that he is Back Up goalie. I think whole situation about that Who is going to be second goalie on whole season. Let’s see what happend. I see two scenarious. First - Moose plays well and we win a game. Means Pavs going back to Chicago and Moose stays. Second - Moose plays as he was playing with Boston and NJ. Means Pavs stays and become second number and Moose going to Chicago to get call if anobody get injure.

I agree w/ Russian…Moose has pretty much stunk so far. This team has to have better than average play in goal to win on most nights and Mosse has been worse than average. So the best backup stays here. Maybe Moose needs to play several games every two days to get his level of play back to NHL backup standard.

Brett Sterling, a healthy scratch in 10 of the first 13 games, goes down to Chicago. It makes sense, as he’s a top-six type of winger and didn’t really have a niche with the Thrashers at this time. An injury could change that, but Sterling is probably better off playing.

Last season, the average goals against in a Hedberg loss were 4.50 per game. The average goals against in a Hedberg win were over 2.42. In other words, he wasn’t very good last year, either.
For the record, Lehtonen’s numbers were 4.03 in losses and 1.57 in wins.

Moose is a good goalie. He needs the defense to keep the puck out of their own end and show some offense like they did last night in the third period after coach Anderson did some butt chewing. I think they need to trade Lets or Moose and let Pavs have a chance at backup or let em’ see who is the best goalie. We need a quality center so Kovy can lay some smackdown on the opposing teams. If a fire is lit under this team like the third period last night they can win.

Thrashers have five points out of the possible six (5/6) for the last three games. And, now in overtime, we might get more.
Zach Redmond made a nifty move in the shootout, but did not score in the CCHA games on NHL TV, featuring Redmond’s Ferris State vs. **Miami of Ohio, #8. The Miami University Redhawks won it, 3-2, in the shootout.
SCORES!!! Jason Williams, from Kovy and Hainsey!! Thrashers win, 5-4!! Moose gets the win!! The Thrashers trailed 2-1, after one period, and 4-3, after two periods. T-birds now have a three game winning streak.
3…2…1… And a suddenly “talented” Swede, unlike HaveNOT, emerges!
Hey, Bryan Little stole this game for Atlanta. He should have had a “hat trick.” I am really liking his development. After all, that’s what this year is all about.

It was Crasy Game. I could not beleive taht we can get two points in Buffalo. But We did IT. Good game by Little, Kozlov and Williams. Valabik was playing very game game today also. Moose was shaking so badly. I do not know what call should make. May be he will stay, may be he will go. Hard to make a call. But anyway three winner in the road. We are plaing like a Champions…. :-)

Great win by the boys tonight.
Nice to see Charmin with a great effort goal to tie the game up tonight. He has been quite un-Charmin-like so far this season. Jason Williams has certainly stepped his game up as well. Bryan Little continues to show that he is going to be (actually, he looks like he already is) a very good player in this league. Slava doubled his assist total for the season tonight. Hainsey’s sprawling poke-check was another example of the superb effort put forth by the guys. We all know the kind of horror stories the Thrashers have had up in Buffalo. No such horror this evening…and on the back end of a back-to-back, no less!
So…5-7-2. It ain’t pretty, but things are certainly on the upswing.

The point guys tonight: Williams, 2 goals, game winner…Little 2 goals, 1 assist…Kovy 2 assists, game winning assist…White game tying goal…kozzy 3 assists…EC, Toby, Havelid, Hainsey 1 assist…Moose W, .875 SV%, including the big butt save! …Miller L, .808 SV%
Thrash get the 3 game winning streak, now it’s a real streak and double their points total from 6 to 12 points…big div game Sunday with the Canes at RBC…hope it’s on Center Ice

Well Bruce Levenson thinks we’re ‘so close’ to 1st place, I wonder if he’ll now authorize some additional payroll to help the team chase a playoff spot?
Crickets chirp … off in the distance, a coyote howls, and then some tumble weeds roll by. And the 600-pound albino gorrilla in the corner of the room scratches himself, while we all ‘pretend’ not to see it.
Allrightee then. I guess we’re not going to increase the payroll.

Guys, that was one crazy game. My game story is all about Moose, who was well aware he was playing for his job. That poke check on the breakaway was big-time. I didn’t even have room to write about the, what did somebody call it, “butt save.” He was due some good luck. The fourth goal went in off Exelby’s skate, I was told. I haven’t been covering the Thrashers long, but I know his teammates respect and like the heck out of Moose.

Crazy game, indeed, but a victory nonetheless. Moose struggled but got the victory. The rest of the boys fought for this game, and kudos to Oystrick and Valabik…both played solid games against a tough opponent. We still have our issues, no doubt, but I was proud of the boys tonight.

Butt save and a beauty!
I thought all four lines looked pretty good tonight. Still some ugly spots of course.
Nice hit by Enstrom. Exelby driving the lane…twice?! Definitely a strange one, but the back-to-back hex might be going away.

Lots of highlites in this great win.
My favorite was the Enstrom hit. If he can put on 10 - 15 pounds of muscle in the next couple of years, I believe he can have a hall of fame career.
2nd Favorite: The Kovy overtime blast had so much velocity that it gave the lengthy rebound for the Williams chip.
This was a very, very satisfy win. But on top of it all, it was entertaining.

So, did Moose keep his job?
I think so for the short term, but he better be looking over his shoulder. Pavelec is playing well enough and has shown the hunger to want to be here.
Kari is #1 as long as he does not fall apart this season.
Pavelec is the future #2 or #1 next year.
Moose is expendable once we have the confidence that Kari will not be hurt and Pavelec is ready.
And that may be the key to keeping Pavs down on the farm and Moose as the #2. Kari being so prone to injury that the risk of getting rid of Moose and being down to one Goalie could completely blow up the season.
Just remember a couple of years ago when we played Goalie roulette and ended up having Gladiators in our nets, no offense to the Gladiators Toby, but they are farm guys for a reason.

SEE - I told you Moose would come around. I think Lets is gonna be a injury prone goalie, so lets use him as trade bait while he is sorta healthy. If we could get a top line center in a trade and maybe throw in Slater to sweeten the pot. If anybody doubted Coach Anderson’s ability to get the job done i think last night’s game at BUFFALO should show we GOT THE RIGHT COACH. GO THRASHERS!!!

By Mike Knobler

Get THe Puck Out Nope. No captain, yet. The five alternates continue to split the duties. Kozlov is playing best of the five at the moment, but Kovalchuk has shown a lot of leadership and good play in the last three games. Niclas Havelid has been steady; that’s what he’s about. Colby Armstrong is a stand-up guy on and off the ice. Mathieu Schneider is the only one of the five who is having a really disappointing start to his season.

Mike and All, you guys know that their are already rumors coming out that we will trade Kovy this season? What is that all about? I personally think he is more likely to stay than Hoss because he is a leader, Hossa is not. Still, I would hope the team would at least wait and see what we are working with next season before they do something like that.

Ilya Kovalchuk is a talented player who is unhappy in the new offensive scheme. It is either trade him now while trade value is viable or let him jump later and get zippo in return. I favor the former. Do not want to see him deteroriate into another uninspired Maryann Hossa. I like the guy.
By Mike Knobler
November 8, 2008 9:22 PM | Link to this
GSU-Lee I addressed the Kovalchuk trade rumors in my story about the victory over Florida. The rumors: Toronto first, then Montreal. I got calls and e-mails from Montreal reporters. Don Waddell said there’s nothing to it.
My two cents: This would be a bad time to trade Kovalchuk. Who are you going to get for him?
If he’s unhappy, it’s not affecting his play this week. He has looked better in the last three games than he had all season. He’s working hard, and not just on offense.

why am i hearing on xm radio, chanel 204, talk of a Kovy trade?
It’s something to talk about. Seriously, don’t put any weight on this sort of thing. Hossa was obviously gone. Kovalchuk is in a “wait and see” mode.
By Brendan
November 9, 2008 1:07 AM | Link to this
The only way Kovalchuk gets traded by Atlanta … occurs when the team is COMPLETELY OUT OF ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS. And, say it with me, that’s not until the 2010 trade deadline.
Now, it’s possible that if Kovy fails to re-sign through August 2009, that you might see a move. But again, that’s complicated. The team that accepts the trade will want assurances, or something very close to that, that Kovalchuk will re-sign with that team. Otherwise, it’s just an extended rental situation for them. And really, that limits what Atlanta will get in return. And … if you think about it … is even a lottery draft pick worth losing Kovalchuk? If you’re familar with the names Alexandre Daigle, Patrik Stefan, Dave Chyzowski, and Vitaly Vishnevski or Pavel Brendl, you know they’re not in the same league, even remotely, with Ilya Kovalchuk. Even a lottery draft pick isn’t a sure-fire remedy for the loss of a Superstar.
Peek out your window. See a tree? Good. Are there any Kovalchuks growing on that tree? No? Well, that’s why GM’s don’t foolheartedly trade them. And if this particular GM wants any attempt WHATSOEVER to salvage a legacy, he can’t be the one who traded Kovalchuk, along with Heatly, Hossa, and Coburn during his Administration.
