Pavelec called up from Wolves
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Thrashers have called up Ondrej Pavelec from the Chicago Wolves to back up Johan Hedberg in goal tonight at New Jersey. Kari Lehtonen missed the morning skate because he was under the weather, and apparently he is ill enough the Thrashers didn’t want to have to play him even in an emergency capacity. Pavelec stopped 26 of 28 shots last night in a 2-1 loss at Iowa. Coach John Anderson said the plan all along was to play Hedberg against the Devils, his second start coming in the season’s 11th game.
The Devils are going to be plenty motivated tonight. They’re on a season-high three-game winless streak and tied a team record for a home game Wednesday night by allowing Toronto 48 shots on net. The Thrashers are on a five-game winless streak.

Does this mean I won’t have to witness that idiot Stendec wandering around his front yard yelling and screaming to himself about that “F-ing, Finnish, piece of garbage goalie” all night tonight?
I swear, that man has some serious issues. Lately, he’s even taken to talking to his imaginary friend “tommysteele” while pacing up and down the street.
“Yes, Mr. Stendec, you are 100% correct about the goalie”….”Why thank you for checking in on me tommysteele, you are right too about Kari”….”Yes, Mr. Stendec, I know you only tell the truth”.
It’s really quite troubling, you know. Frightens the small children.

Hey stendick, if Pavs is in the net tomorrow and he lets up a goal, are you going to rip him apart too, you dill-weed?
You absolutely know nothing about hockey, do you? The defense allows 12 shots in a period and 11 are saved, so you call him a “loser”?
I have a news flash for you, you dumba$$….goalies do not always throw shutouts in every game. Eventually, your offense has to start scoring goals to win games.

I think John Anderson is giving them a tongue-lashing. And yes, we’ll see Pavelec in the 3rd period. Why not? At 4-0, it was over. But two more late goals makes it 6-0.
Well … you guys who are going to the game on Sunday to voice your displeasure … you better be loud with that “Waddell” chant. Loud enough to be heard on the radio, since it’s a “radio-only” coverage game. Florida is thought to be a team about where we are, in terms of projected finish. Let’s see how we do against them.
Sage, there is NO WAY that Waddell gets to fire yet another coach. No chance. Even if it WERE the Coaches’ (plural) fault, who hired them? Alll of them. Okay, raise your hand if you WANT to be the GM of this team? You probably won’t even get the opportunity to name your Head Coach. By the way, I still think John Anderson is a good coach. He just needs a deeper roster.

My goodness, I would have thought that 7-0 blowout was our low point, but this is unspeakable. The way the Devils just scored on that PP for the 6th goal was completely embarrassing.
I was more confident in the Year 1 or 2 Thrashers in their ability to win a game, this is just a Chinese Fire Drill out there.
There is nothing resembling leadership on this club. Anderson’s system simply is not going to work in the NHL, and the inability of Waddell to give him any talent just makes it worse. Unreal.
I would hope even the most ardent supporters of Waddell are finally waking up and seeing what a cluster it will remain here with him in charge. Nothing changes until he’s gone, nothing. This is really embarrassing.

Brett Sterling and Marty Reasoner nearly followed up on the Kozlov goal. That would have been nice. I think it’s important for the Thrashers to try to win this period, to take some momentum into the next game.
Brodeur just lost his shutout bid, for #100 of his career. Kozlov refused to celebrate the goal, after he scored. Proper response.

Most state sports fans were able to view a horror twinbill today. First the Dawgs went bellyup against Gators (they assumed F++K me position early) then the Thrashers put in their customary non-effort against the Devils. At least Devils used lubricant for that ream job! I would have been better served watching victorious Yellow Jackets. Oh well, live and learn. Next, the sheep will respond with the cop-out response of, “Who would you replace Don with, smart guy?”.
That’s nothing but yet another pathetic statement. A pitiful cop-out.
Before you utter such nonsense, let me state that IF I were an owner of this team, I would spend all of the necessary TIME in order to make a DECISION on anything and everything related to the team. Since I am NOT an owner, then simply STFU with that nonsensible trash of a response.
IF I were the GM of this, or any, team, I can assure you that I would fill the roster with players.
I only hope that we won’t have to hear that type of response from the likes of Allansheep, Ranallolamb, et. al. Worse yet, it’s followed by their haughty arrogance of accusing you of “not having answers”. Self-righteous tripe.
I have provided all the ANSWER that is necessary to get action taken. Boycott the product. Period. That is the ONLY thing which WILL effect change.

Sadly, A$G, I think some are truly thinking we are about to “turn the corner”…However, many years ago, a wise ‘sage’, who taught me practically all I know about the game, informed me that the real time to catch good teams is at the very beginning of the year.
Once the stretch-run starts, I believe he stated around the beginning of the year (i.e. January), you cannot sneak up on anyone and the teams are now truly refined and ready to go, starting to hit that ‘stride’. The pretenders go into the dumpster and the real teams seperate themselves.
We’ll see. I predicted our only hope this year was to get off to that wonderful start and it could mean something, as I expected nothing good to happen when the opponent was ready-to-go.
I just hope the usual-sheep aren’t so silent after games and performances such as this? Where did they all go?
(They must have flocked to keep talking of playoffs and how great Coach Sunshine and his ‘System’ is at either the official site or at the Nasty Nest…Delusion rules in both places…)

This is going to be even a longer season than I originally thought. I picked the Thrashers 13th in the East and that is starting to look incredibly optimistic. Every facet of their game just looks horrible right now. Sigh.
Maybe the NHL can change the schedule so the Thrashers and Islanders end the season playing each other about 70 times. The ultimate loser, or winner depending on how you look at it would be awarded the #1 pick. Plus, the real NHL teams wouldn’t have to waste their time playing these jokes of franchises.

Sage, Have you noticed the absense of Alan on the blog lately. When I, and many others knew we had ZERO scoring, we were blasted by Alan and others, now where is he ?????????
We will be damn lucky to avoid three things this season… First not getting 50 points, after this start, worse than last season in my book, Second don waddell NOT being fired, which should have happened 5-6 years ago, and Third, I believe this team may actually fold and close up shop before the season is out, it is THAT BAD.
All the BLAME goes on the head of one person, he cannot be called a man, DUMB don waddell, he has in effect destroyed NHL hockey in Atlanta for the second time.
I’d rather not have a team than have this crap team owned by a bunch of morons and a GM who could not run a lemonade stand.
More than losses in the standings are at stake people, I bet this team folds before season’s end, because the fans & players just cannot stand the crap asg stands for any longer.
By Brendan
November 2, 2008 2:52 AM | Link to this
LAC, I share your frustration. But I’m absolutely positive that the team will not fold. And it won’t relocate, either. The budget Waddell was given, and has adhered to, keeps the team at break-even or better, financially. Now, there is an issue over revenue-sharing dollars. If the attendance just dropped down to 3,500 a night, that can have an effect on how much revenue-sharing the team gets. But there’s no doubt in my mind that people who have bought tickets aren’t showing up for games. But they count as sold tickets. If they didn’t sell those tickets, then there’d be real problems, financially.
The Thrashers are going to get to 50-points. They might not get to 70-points. The difference between 50 and 70 might be traced to how often our opposition decides to start their backup goalie to rest their #1 guy.
As for Waddell being fired, of course, in another organization he would be long gone. But this group likes him. Respects him. And, I kinda, sorta think they feel he is a quality GM. “Quality GM” perhaps means, “one who doesn’t complain, while adhering to a budget.” One thing Waddell once said has always stayed with me. When Belkin called him incompetent, on August 10, 2005, he said, “I’ll answer for the wins and losses [but I don’t care for the name calling].” Well, has anyone done the math on the wins and losses since the lockout? I don’t know what it is, exactly. I know Atlanta had winning seasons in 2006 and 2007, before the wheels fell off in 2008, resulting in a 28th-place finish. Keep in mind, this ownership group is only going to look at things from what happened since THEY took control over the team. Their philosophy … is that longevity at the GM position allows the incumbent to learn from past mistakes. I’m more inclined to believe they will keep him than fire him, given what I can surmise about the Spirit Group.
By LAC

Brenden, I don’t know… It could happen. I sure hope not, but if these owners cannot see what is going on and the sharp attendence drop, what will it take to get them to act like real men and do what needs to be done with waddell.
It is such a shame to see where this team has sunk to. In our ninth season, with the draft picks we should be at the least a SE Division contender every year and moreover an Eastern Confrence finalist every so often.
But this bottom ringing is just almost too much to stand, I mean if Hartley gets fired after last year, why does waddell not go ? When will the bell go off with these clowns ? Brenden, I really think they could fold if attendence gets much worse and with this play… IT WILL.

When Belkin called him incompetent, on August 10, 2005, he said, “I’ll answer for the wins and losses [but I don’t care for the name calling].”
Which begs the question, is our only hope a Belkin win in the lawsuit? I could see him winning, selling the Thrashers’ to raise the cash to pay off the Spirit Squad rah rah, sis boom bah so he could keep the arena and the Hawks and then we hopefully have an owner that wants to see hockey succeed?
By Brendan

LAC, I really don’t want you to worry about the team folding. Not another second. That’s useless “worry time.” If you must worry about something, worry about how fast our prospects can develop. Because that’s how we’re going to escape all this. Draft picks and prospects.
LAC, if the Thrashers were in danger of going bankrupt, the NHL would step in to oversee it. I know. A lot of us have been rooting for the NHL to take over and run the team, like they did for Buffalo, when former owner John J. Rigas was indicted in the Adelphia Cable collapse. But the truth I believe is this: The Atlanta Thrashers are a solvent hockey club. Because of that, the NHL sees ‘no problem’ with the way the team is run. And, per the NHL, “every year, some team has to finish last.” But finishing last isn’t punished by folding the team. If that were true, every year the NHL would lose a franchise. It’s just not worth worrying about.
Given the lease this team has, it’d be a hard-sell to relocate it. Basically, the new owners would be paying two rents for one hockey team. I don’t care how DETERMINED an owner might be, that’s just not good business acumen. So, it won’t happen. Now, Belkin could win the suit and sell the team to Arthur Blank, Ted Turner, or any other prospective buyer. Whether that buyer is local is anyone’s guess. But even if the new owner isn’t local, he’s not moving the team for another 12 years.
We will have hockey in Atlanta, whether Don Waddell is in charge of it or not. If the STH’s who renewed this year don’t renew next year, then there’ll be serious ramifications, financially. But really, the entity who represents the biggest danger to the club is Home Depot and Coca-Cola, since they are the major sponsors. If these two businesses said, “Fire Waddell, or we’re withdrawing our support,” then it would COMMAND the attention of the Atlanta Spirit, LLC. The amount of money they pump into the club is substantial enough to cause change.
The AS, LLC could CARE LESS about me. Or any other fan ‘like me.’ I don’t pump enough money into the club, annually, to make a difference to them if I don’t buy tickets. Their remedy for me … is discounted tickets to make up for it. Or “Coca-Cola Family Fun-Pack” nights, or “All you can Eat” seats. Or some other gimmick promotion.
If an entire section of the lower bowl called the team to say, “I’m not renewing next year. I’m calling to let you know that now,” then they’d address it through advertising and marketing to find new ticket holders. And if that didn’t work, then, perhaps, they’d look to the GM position to attempt to remedy the situation. But it’s THEIR team. It’s THEIR money. And if they like Waddell, then Waddell stays. That’s an indefensible sports decision, but it’s their call to make.

Alan and the others said we were better on paper than last year.
For crying out loud, NASCAR Dave, give it a f*** rest. I too said the team lacked offense earlier in the year, but you choose to ignore that. Kind of like how you chose to ignore several other things I’ve said over the past year.
But it’s okay, Dave. While we are better on paper than you and your alternate poster (reminds me almost of stendec and tommysteele) think, you (singular, not plural — you both are still only one individual) are right in that we simply don’t have the offensive presence. A trade is likely coming soon, though, so hang on to your hats folks.

GO PENS!!!
Recent history is lost on people like you. Before Crosby and Malkin were drafted by Pittsburgh, they were a cellar dwelling team too.
Tell me, when Pittsburgh goes back to earning a mere 58 points in the standings, will you still support them? Did you forget the talks in the recent past of Pittsburgh being sold and moved to Kansas City?
Of course you don’t, Mr. Fairweather Fan. But that’s okay, too. Just makes you look dumb when you pop off with inane posts like yours.

I was a season ticket holder for the Pens when there were only 3000 to start the game, then by the time the third period came around, only a couple of hundred. I love hockey. It’s the best game period. Save your smart a$$ comments for someone else.
My point is ALAN that Atlanta as a city only supports winners, and this team is a long way away from winning. There are rumors rampant that this team with its ownership issues will be sold and or moved.
They can’t attract any talented free agents and the skilled players they have all want to leave. So what does that tell you?

Which is unlike the actual stories that came out talking about the Pens moving to Kansas City. A rumor is not an actuality. The only reasons the Pens are staying there is because of Lemieux and the deal for a new arena. That’s it. Which is unlike Atlanta, which already has a state of the art facility. Yes, there are ownership problems, but there’s a greater chance that the Islanders will move before the Thrashers.
Go bother them for a while.

Just during the brief history of the Thrashers, I recall the Pens being a threat circa 2000 (with Jagr and Lemieux)…I remember them beating a good Ottawa team all the time (the Sens being my ‘2nd’ team—at least until Heatley went to them).
They went down, drafted well, and are now back in the hunt. Buffalo was the same way (i.e. good ten years ago; rebuilt; good again). This is precisely what I’m talking about when I compare how pathetic Don Waddell and this organization is at actually “building”.
Some teams normally rise and fall—but we stay generally the same: bad. Only once in the playoffs. Couldn’t even win a silly playoff game at that.
I know you don’t need me reminding you of some of this—but I hope Alansheep stops using the Pens as an ‘example’ of being a ‘bad’ team.
That analogy simply won’t hold, sheep. Try again at defending the indefensible.
Oh, by the way, FLA just scored and it’s now a 4-3 game (ATL up)…Will momentum be good to us?

Your fascination with barnyard animals never ceases to amaze me.
I haven’t the slightest idea what got into you, but all I was saying is that Atlanta is unlikely to move - rumors or not - while there was indeed a real threat of Pittsburgh moving.

“Recent history is lost on people like you. Before Crosby and Malkin were drafted by Pittsburgh, they were a cellar dwelling team too….”
History is lost on you, too—simply expand the scope and your real answer is there for even you to attempt to disagree with. The Pens went through a stretch of two to three years of being pitiful—but, guess what, they REBUILT and are now a threat.
Something that can’t be said for your Donny Waddell and the Atlanta Thrashers—who are perpetually pathetic. Oh, except for the one playoff appearance (albeit how brief it was!).
The Waddell-huggers make me laugh with their ‘facts’…

Congratulations Pavs! Young goalie helped end lengthy losing streak. Was not a Hall Of Fame effort. Know what it was apologists? A victory! Pavs stats were:
Three goals allowed on 21 shots for a below average .857 save percentage. Guess what? It does not mean a damn thing! Kid got team the “W”. That is what I have been preaching all along. The only statistic which should matter to a professional athlete (and true fans) are wins and losses. Pavs is now 1-0! The kid has surrendered three goals in 80 minutes of play. I will gladly take that.
Old What’s-His-Name should be given sufficient time to recover from whatever the Hell it is that ails him. The rest of the season will be fine! Thanks again Pavs. A win sure feels good right now.

Yes, they did. And yes, they are. Where exactly do we disagree?
Oh, I know what it is. You just continue to enjoy getting off on calling people sheep and assuming they like Mr. Waddell. Whatever floats your boat, Sir Irrelevance.

Congratulations Ilya Kovalchuk on sterling offensive performance! It was my oversight not to say so before now. I have been active on Falcon sites this afternoon. Again, thank you for exceptional coming out effort. It is one I (all of us) have been waiting on. I still believe you are looking to move on but have a lot more character than Maryann Hossa. The losing streak is over!

This is not directed at apologists but to the others. Others many on this site contend are me but they know who they are. If Pavs goes goes on impressive winning streak but What’s-His-Name returns from Alcoholics Anonymous will John Petrino be compelled out of loyalty to remove Pavs from the nets for this proven loser? Your thoughts, please.

That is right Mr. Pencildec. You are always right. I have no idea why anyone does not see the wisdom of your comments posted here. I too thought Pavelec was a good goalie, but you are right. Why do people hate you so Mr. Pencildec. Certainly they have to see that you are only telling you the truth. God bless you.

With the win, Atlanta climbs back to .333 for the year. They’re on pace for 55-points now. Right now, a win feels good.

We talk about someone buying the Thrashers and saving the franchise. Maybe we can persuade Arthur Blank from looking into buying an expansion MSL team and purchasing the Thrashers. He wouldn’t have to start from scratch and the fan base would already be in place. He knows how to run professional teams and maybe he could run the d******* who currently handle the team out of town i.e. Don Waddell. It’s just a thought but………….

For crying out loud, NASCAR Dave, give it a f* rest
ALAN That ain’t me, brother. I can promise you that. I’ve been out of town all weekend watching the pathetic DAWGS lay down and die in Jacksonville. But I’m gettin ready to watch the THRASH/FLA game on the DVR. Sounds like it was a good one.
