Opportunity for Oystrick, or Valabik?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Thursday’s news that Zach Bogosian is probably out about six weeks with a broken leg didn’t immediately lead to a call up from Chicago. The Thrashers could conceivably stick with their current roster, depending on the play of Nathan Oystrick.
If Oystrick plays well, there’s no hurry to get another defenseman on the roster. So a guy with one career NHL game is about to become an everyday player. I’ll probably have more on him in Saturday’s paper.
Meanwhile, Boris Valabik played Wednesday night like a guy who smelled an opportunity. He had a goal, two assists and a plus-four rating as the Wolves blanked Providence 6-0. They were his first goal and assists of the season. Arturs Kulda is plus-six for the season.

I like to see Oystrick all three games to play. If he will be OK with Schneider, we can keep him, if he will make mistakes after Game with Florida call Valabik. It is not a big problem. We have very many young defesmen.

Thrashyou Good question. This kid seems to be a quick lerner. I would like to see Valabik have a shot also. We need his muscle and attitude. If this is a rebuilding year, give these guys a shot. After Tuesday night against the Flyers what do we have to lose?

I think Kulda definitely and Valabik could use the year of seasoning in Chicago, but Valabik will probably be called up next week until Bogo gets back.
Kulda had a heck of a playoffs run in Chicago next year, wouldn’t be suprised to see him make our club next season.

Yeah BOB… I could see KULDA coming up to be paired with BOGOSIAN after we move SCHNEIDER at the trade deadline, you know??? They were a D-Pair in Juniors. For now, we need to bring up VALABIK… The team needs more GRIT.

Hey Knob, I know you said in the article this doesn’t change DW’s plans for Bogo, but wouldn’t it be better to send the kid back to Juniors and let him finish the season there while coming back from this. Most guys after being out for 6 weeks might get an AHL conditioning assignment to shake the rust off, but Bogo can’t because of his age. I just think it makes a little more sense to let him go back to juniors and recover down there and come back next year. Give Kulda or Valabik a chance to see what they can do.

Although Boris may not be NHL ready (then again how many players on this team are NHL ready?) the Thrashers need a player with size and grit to move players out of the front of the net. Against filthy, I watched as Toby attempted to move players from the goalie crease, with little success.
I also watched numerous hard checks never returned in kind by the Thrashers. Boris would fill this void. Yes, he will get some penalties; but, I’m tired of watching the Thrashers be the league’s doormats.
This team needs less tiolet paper (Todd White = Charmin, Jason Williams = Angel Soft) and more sandpaper (Valabik and Hoffman).

I’m content with giving Oystrick a shot, but I’m not to sad to see Valabik called back up. I think bringing Kulda into the league now is way too early…he needs more time of top pairing professional hockey minutes to continue his development.
He’ll get his chance next year after the whole Nikulin crap comes and goes (again).
My biggest worry is that they decide to buy the contract of someone like Rivers just because he’s “proven”. Reading Waddell’s quote I wouldn’t put it past him to make such a move…and it’s the wrong move in my opinion (if made).

Valabik maybe the first on everyone’s mind to get some NHL icetime during BOGO injury. But don’t forget Grant Lewis.
I could be wrong, be I think that Lewis had a very good preseason with the Thrash (better than Boris). I think that Lewis fits in better with Coach Anderson’s system than Valabik.
Lewis has: 16 shots on goal 3 assists No goals +4
Valabik has: 8 shots on goal 2 assists 1 goal +4
This is what Coach Anderson wants, D-men who get involved in the offense. I remember people saying that Boris lacks speed on accuracy.

The Bolton vs Orr fight was surprisingly decent. i have actually liked the Thorburn-Reasoner-Army line tonight, physical and good forechecking. At least the Rags seem as soft as the Thrashers tonight and won’t get pushed around.
As far as the defenseman, I wouldn’t mind seeing Lewis, but considering how many games he played last season for the Wolves, I would put him behind Valabik and tied with Kulda for a call up. I really hope it is not Rivers if a d-man is called up.

When I heard Bogo was out for 6 weeks I breathed a sigh of relief that Klee had already been claimed off of waivers. Not that I don’t like Klee it is just that I think we need to look to the young guys. I think Oystrick deserves to get some minutes. Lets see what he can contribute.
Should he fall short I’d be tempted to call up Kulda, as he seems to fit coach’s system best.
However, I must agree with Stroz and look for some sandpaper. I could live comfortably with losing 7-0 if one (or a few) of our guys punched the lights out, or bloodied, one (or a few of the other team). What a message it would send. That is the kind of “building” (reputation) I can feel good about. If there is something worse than losing like whimps I don’t know what it is.

Thrashers gave their untalented scumball goaltender a lead. He quickly whiffed on equalizing goal to Ranjerks. Just a fact! Only kind officiating erased another goal early in second period. Just a matter of time before guy in Atlanta nets crumbles under pressure again. Press on!

If that doesn’ work then keep trying different guys until we find the right combination. Whomever said we need more grit on this team was right. I’m tired of seeing our guys knocked around like ragdolls. Hockey is a contact sport. Trouble is we need more guys to initiate the contact instead of being on the receiving end. The following comment was from the Thrasher goaltender old What’s-His-Name:

Hey Hooky Bob, You should know that NHL is NOT WWF, or UFC. Fights do not belong to the ice rinks, and your comment inviting fight while losing 0-7 is extremely stupid. Unfortunately, we also have some idiotic TV announcers, who are as disillusioned about hockey as you. Btw, why do the great ones never fight (Gretzky, Lemieux, Messier, Hossa, etc)? You need to grow up, and learn what ice hockey is all about.

Also, what kind of slaughter would we have had against Philly if Boulton had instigated and gotten a 5-minute major? He tried initiating clean fights — no one would fight him. As opposed to the Rangers, where several people were overly enthusiastic about fighting, so much that they were willing to attack straight off the faceoff.

Win or lose, I’m glad Boulton decided to pick a fight at the beginning of the game, can’t state strongly enough how important that was. We should have done that toward the end of the Flyers game (especially since Brashear isn’t with them anymore!). They looked MUCH better last night against Rangers: smoother transitions, they slowed it down just a touch, not as sloppy with the puck, better in the neutral zone, better scoring opps, puck cycling, etc.etc. They’re still playing soft though…several chances to put people up on the boards but they always seem to pass up those bone-crushing hits that they alway seem to be on the receiving end of…turn that around and be the ones instigating the contact! This team is too soft. We need to sneak a couple goals past Brodeur and beat the Devils, badly, this team needs a W in the worst way possible.

Hey Stendec. Did you see the key phrases from last night? Oops, I mean the key excuses. Last night it was all blamed on “Bad Bounces”. They said we always are a victim of “bad bounces”. While in the meantime, they never mentioned the real problem, our idiot goalie was on his @ss looking the complete other way when the Game-Winning goal occurred. So much for Focus! Oh, and don’t feel like you have to stay away from Rawhide’s blog, freedom of speech is a great thing. They cannot make you leave there. to fanfan. Fighting has always been a part of hockey. The players you mentioned didn’t fight because they weren’t fighters. That’s what enforcers are for. I look at this season as a win-win situation for the Thrashers. If they win and make the playoffs great, if they miss them for the eighth time in franchise history, DW walks and the franchise wins. I want the team to win, but I want DW out as well, so either way the franchise wins in my opinion.
I agree about Kovy, can any honestly say that this team would miss Kovy the way he is playing right now if he was traded? Our top production and in form line right now is the Kozlov-White-Little line. 2nd would probably be the Thorburn-Reasoner-Army line. Come December, I saw start trading, move what we can, people will pay more the longer they get to have players. Move Schneider and his NHL worst -10, move Williams, move Christensen, move Kovy, move Slater, move Bolts and let this team start to build.

UD4L — Yeah, I think this team would miss Kovalchuk if traded. I understand he’s not playing up to the expectations his past play has set, but it’s still very early in the season. I think it’s completely unwise to trade a player based on a 10 game performance and an assumed lack of passion, especially one that is as prolific a scorer as Kovalchuk. Also, losing the club’s best player (not arguably, he’s Atlanta’s best player) would be horrendous for the club’s already low morale.
It’s not easy to build a club without a few foundation players. Without Kovalchuk, Little would be the only foundation forward left to build around. I like Little, but he’s no substitute or replacement for Kovalchuk. Esposito isn’t, Holzapfel isn’t, Macachek isn’t.
If this team starts winning I fully expect everyone to take back their remarks about Kovalchuk’s lack of passion…because we all know that when this team is competitive and winning, he’s 10 times more passionate than the rest of the team. Now that they’re losing, it’s easy to pick his game and attitude apart.
Kovalchuk has played for this team for 8 years…I can definitely understand that consistently losing is wearing on his spirits. He’s even expressed as much to the media. However, he’s had slow starts before (last season for example), and he’s rebounded to his normal lofty stats by the end of the year. This year could be no different than the rest, and it’d be a shame to get rid of a player like Kovalchuk based on a small sample of games, not his entire body of work.

I’d miss him as the face of the organization, but I wouldn’t miss him as th petulant, non-scoring brat he’s acting like at the moment.
Our top production and in form line right now is the Kozlov-White-Little line.
Statistically, yes. It’s pretty much all of our production.
2nd would probably be the Thorburn-Reasoner-Army line.
Also yep.

Monkey Puck - almost no one here (posters-AJC writers) are going to criticize Thrasher goaltender (he is so beneath my contempt I refuse to type his real name or even my nickname for him anymore). According to these buffoons this untalented Finn has NEVER surrendered a legitimate goal. It was a bad bounce, monkey puck (with all due respect), deflection (from God’s knows where), teleportation (like that one) or some other equally innane excuse. They say give the kid time to develop. How many damn years does he require? The losses just keep piling up! Sometimes I think fraud fans here only want high draft picks. I would much rather view victories and playoff appearances. That is a minority view here. Sure, the goaltender will make his saves every game. NFL officials will get the majority of penalties correct. However, the critical ones, which mean the difference between a win and a loss, will be dropkicked into The Twilight Zone. By the Thrasher goalie and NFL zebras! So the apologists can take pride in a .999 save percentage. I take no joy in a 3-22 record. Catch my drift? Hell, the goalie being flat on the ice when a goal is scored is nothing new. I have seen him skating in a different time zone when a goal was scored. Focus? No. Mental toughness? No. Unwillingness to lose? No. Pride? No. Dignity? No. Physical toughness? Forget it! This scumball is a sieve. Hope he enjoys LaLa Land. I like Rawhide a lot. Respect his columns. Just disagree with his defense of player who deserves no defense. Rawhide is a nice man. One day he will see that I am right about some things. Oh well, enough ranting for now. Other posters getting impatient with attacks. Thanks again for seeing with open eyes. Happy Halloween! Oh yes, listening to those damn incompetent announcers was frustrating as Hell. Their lavish praise AFTER A DEFEAT nauseated me. They talked as if we had just won Lord Stanley’s Cup. They know as much about hockey as 98 percent on this site. NOT A DAMN THING! Bigger apologists than most on this site. Not something to be proud of.

Mr Stendec. Where can I find updated statistics on NHL players? I am still new at this. Oh, Happy Halloween, to you too. You and Monkey Puck had a lot to say. I have been ridiculed for much milder comments on the other fan site.

Mr. Stendick, do you really think we are stupid enough to not know you are posting as “tommysteele” and “ROBO” and “monkeypuck” and holding a very moronic discussion with yourself?
You are a very sad and patheic little person.

A goal, an assist and a plus-4 rating in the AHL is a whole different ballgame than in the NHL.
Ask Anderson about the difference between success in “the show” and success with the Wolves.

This is entertaining…it’s like watching a 5 year old girl during tea time, faking voices for her stuffed animals, Barbie dolls, and rocks with drawn on faces.
“Would you like more tea Mr. Fluffy Bear?”

Hi Tommysteele. Do not get discouraged by mean-spirited posters. Sometimes I strongly suspect many are by the Thrasher goaltender himself, his groupies or Finnish kinfolk. If he/they truly understand English. But I digress. I use Yahoo. Go to Yahoo home page, click sports, click NHL, click teams, click team of choice then, presto, you are there. Simply click on player you wish to highlight. I like this site because individual stats available to be compared to league average. Especially informative for goaltenders. Hope that was helpful. Have a nice day.

The jig is up Tommysteele, Robo and Monkey Puck. Good old Steely Dan has figured it out. I guess Alan, Sarah and (pick one) are the same too. Hell, maybe only three individuals are writing all the posts on both fan sites. Ya think?

I haven’t even posted on this blog yet and I’m being called out by a bitter old man and an idiot who can’t type normally. Shows what they know.
Oh, and Robotron 2084, her name is spelled “Sara.”
The game last night was hard fought, but still a loss. Hopefully we can pull out a victory against Jersey. Something has got to give for this Thrashers offense, and when it does, the goals will come in bunches.

People keep coming in asking for the Thrasher season ticket holder costume.
What does the costume look like?
Should it be an empty wallet with an empty jar of vasoline for the head?

It seems the Thrashers have been in a rebuilding year since the beginning. If we start trading off all the players who have produced in the past, Kovy for one, we will always be rebuilding. We traded Hossa for prospects and what are they doing? Not much and would you trust our current GM at evaluating other teams talent? Hell, he can’t even evaluate the talent (or lack of) on the Thrashers current roster. Look at other teams roster in the NHL and look at some of the players who were once Thrashers Mr. Waddell let get away. Either by trade or not renewing contracts or what have you. Most are not big name players but they have made impacts on the teams they currently play for or have played for. We don’t need prospects. We need to build by signing some established veterans through freeagency by offering contracts that are comparable to what other teams might offer. You get what you pay for. Although Kovy has had a difficult time lately he has earned his money in the past. Any athlete regardless of the sport has his bad stretches. The free agents that Waddell signs are 2nd tier free agents. The ones he can sign at discount prices. We need players from the top tier. Maybe Mr. Waddell can’t see very high or it’s stuck up the owners tight rearend.

Shaker, I feel your pain. You make some good points. But I think it’s double-edge sword that is hurting us. (1) We have never had “comitted, hockey ownership.” And (2) we’ve never had an upper echelon GM.
Either one of those things can have a long and damaging effect on a franchise. At this point, people will start coming out of the woodwork to argue “so and so” isn’t an upper echelon GM, and still won a Cup. Or, they’ll cite Tampa Bay’s new ownership, which appears VERY committed and VERY hockey-oriented. Trouble is, Oren Koules isn’t the GM he thinks he is. He’s supposed to hire someone to do that for him. Having a puppet GM is not having any GM at all.
Ted Turner never struck me at a “die hard” hockey fan. But, I do think that he at least represented the possibility of finding an upper echelon GM and keeping the team payroll at close to the MAX CAP LIMIT. Now, I can’t prove that. I can’t tell you, with certainty, that Ted Turner would have fired Don Waddell. But my feeling is … that he would have. Ted likes shiny trophies. And recognition for championships. But he got out of the sports ownership business. I doubt his heart was ever really in hockey.
Until we have new ownership, Don Waddell will remain. That’s my opinion. If DW is still the GM when the puck drops on the 2010-11 season, we’ll know if I was right or wrong. If Don is still installed as “Hockey Czar,” all we can do and hope … is that Waddell rebuilt the team correctly this time. Zach Bogosian, Daultan Leveille, Nicklas Lasu, and Zach Redmond appear to be decent-enough draft selections. If he can avoid another Patrik Stefan in his next 1st round draft pick, and instead land a true “franchise player,” then the team will be better for it down the road. What else is there to say? We must root for Waddell to continue to improve as a GM, as I doubt he’s going anywhere, anytime soon. I am now of the opinion that nothing substantial will change until the lawsuit is resolved. That’s looking like 2011, with appeals.
