4 games in 6 nights = key stretch
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Tonight’s game against the Flyers looks like a key one for the Thrashers, who follow it up with hard-to-win games Thursday and Saturday at the New York Rangers and New Jersey and then a 5 p.m. home game Sunday against Florida. (The good news for the Thrashers is that Sunday game is the second of a back-to-back for the Panthers, too. Florida plays at Nashville Saturday night. Small advantage, Atlanta, which at least will be at home on Sunday.)
The Flyers are 11-0-1 against the Thrashers the last three seasons.
By the way, there has been Bogosian talk on the blog again. So:
Here are two key facts: 1) He isn’t being sent anywhere anytime soon, as coach John Anderson made pretty clear today. 2) It’s 10 games played, not 10 games on the roster, according to the CBA, which I have quoted on here before.
“A player aged 18 or 19 earns a year of professional experience by PLAYING ten or more NHL Games in a season.” — Page 52
And
“In the event that an 18 year old or 19 year old Player signs an SPC [Standard Player Contract] with a Club but does not play at least ten NHL Games in the first season under that SPC, the term of his SPC and his number of years in the entry level system shall be extended for a period of one year …” — Page 23
So Bogosian does not hit the decisive game tonight, which will be the eighth game he has played. A decision has to come after Thursday’s game, assuming he plays tonight and Thursday. And the decision appears to be a formality. Don Waddell emphasized to me in a conversation on Friday that just because Bogosian stays for a 10th game does not mean he stays with the Thrashers all season. It just means the clock starts toward free agency, and unrestricted free agency is far enough down the road that Waddell isn’t overly worried about when that clock starts.

You’re right Mike, the Flyers have absolutely owned the Thrashers the last few seasons. Hopefully, that changes tonight. Rough start so far, but a win tonight gets the Thrashers back within a game of .500. Go Thrashers!!!

Ho, ho, ho - 11 in a Row! Kari sucks against the Flyers, BAD. Philly will make it 12 in a row against us tonight, probably. I think stendec makes some valid points. Seriously, this team has no offense besides Kovi, and even he is on pace for one of his worst seasons ever. Definitely needs more offense if JA thinks they’re going to the playoffs

stendec rails against the goaltending on this team, but the fact is that the Thrashers have never had a solid defense. The Thrashers are allowing just over 36 shots a game. Let’s put ol’ Marty Brodeur behind that defense. Marty’s career save percentage is .914. Facing 36 shots a game at his career save percentage, Marty would be allowing just over 3 goals a game. (Lehtonen has a 2.98 GAA. Hedberg has a 4.80 GAA. They combine for a 3.22 GAA in 8 games this year. Sounds a little like what Marty Brodeur might produce behind this D.)
Brodeur has faced a tick over 25 shots a game on average for his career. Kari Lehtonen’s career average is just a tick over 31 shots per game. If you take the old “10 shots per goal” average, Lehtonen’s doing pretty well to have a 2.83 GAA, per 31 shots, for his career. Brodeur has a career 2.20 GAA per 25 shots. As you can see, those extra shots make a difference.
So, would Martin Brodeur make the Thrashers look great on defense? I doubt it. How often do we see Kari and Moose hung out to dry on offensive rushes? Or unoccupied players sitting right in front of the net? Or turnovers at the blue line? Would Carey Price shut everybody down? Would Henrik Lundqvist whitewash opponents? Not with the porous defense the Thrashers have employed throughout team history.
stendec would be better served just to scream for Don Waddell’s head. Waddell’s been the one constant figure in the organization. He’s the man that is most directly responsible for the defensive failures of this franchise.

The goaltender has struck again! In the closing seconds to boot. Right in character for this choke artist. To add insult to injury it was a SHORTHANDED goal! Way to go Whar’s-Your-Name. Thrashers have gone into tank (given up) once again with a 3-0 toilet sniffer after 40 minutes on national television. Now people will know for sure that there is not a damn soul in Atlanta that knows a damn thing about ice hockey! Was hoping hit on third goal would put goalie out. Not forever. I am not THAT cruel. Maybe for a week — or two. No such luck! Hell, then untalented loser could not surrender his customary soft marshmallow, monkey puck and shorthanded goals. Shout it out apologists. Defenders of untalented goaltender are in a brainless irrational LaLa Land class all their own. There is no DEFENSE for this TRAVESTY. Open your damn eyes!

What is most disturbing about this loss is listening the other announcer on Versus. He was dead on that this team had no guts, no balls, no heart.
You are getting your a* kicked at home on National Television and you take it like a b$tch. That is the biggest problem with the present Thrashers over the past couple of years. We do not take losses personally. We accept them.
The other announcer was clearly baffled that the Thrashers would just roll over like they did.
Unfortunately, we the fans have learned to accept it.

Yes, I got angry when Falcons lost. Bad officiating prevented realistic comeback attempt. Most Falcons did try. Got angry when Tech lost. Battled hard for ranking then urinated it away. Most of players appeared to try. So angry when Thrashers lost I had to smile. No bad officiating. No excuses. Nothing redeeming at all. Players quit. Just as they did last season. Just as they will do from here on out. They do not deserve fan support. Let them play studio hockey. Gang,
I agree that the Thrashers are struggling. However, it is worth mentioning that this team needs time to get used to new players, new coaches, and a new system. Try to hang in there for a while.
Now, you’re probably saying, “easy for you to say.” And, I respond to that by saying I have been a proud fan of the Washington Capitals since 1974. I have witnessed many highs including Stanley Cup playoff appearances. I have also suffered many lows including the deaths of early players Tommy Williams and Stan Gilbertson as well as some of the most dreadful seasons in NHL history.
Keep supporting this team. It will eventually improve through coaching and managerial changes, and player development. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day!

The Flyers and the Thrashers both looked pretty bad in the first period. The Thrashers stayed bad.
To some extent, this game shows how good Kari Lehtonen was in the first eight games, because tonight’s mistakes weren’t new. It just seemed like every time the Thrashers screwed up tonight, the Flyers scored a goal.

That was nothing short of embarrassing.
I’m thinking this one deserves to be in the top 10 worst Thrasher’s game of all-time. Some of the early blowouts might have had worse scores, but I doubt they had such pitiful effort as we saw tonight. Ugh.
And then, as if the on-ice activities weren’t bad enough, some dingbat behind us kept calling Ron Hainsey “Ron-sey.” Almost made me sick.

Hi Terptwin. Thanks for post. I am past middle age. My days are numbered. Watched my beloved Flames capture Stanley Cup. Unfortunately, they were in Calgary at time. Thrasher goaltender not fit to carry jockstraps of Mike Vernon, Daniel Bouchard of Phil Myre! The guy is a complete fraud. No NHL talent. No matter what some misguided folks on this site believe or want to believe. He is strictly a three goals per night quitter on good nights! What about bad nights? They do not get much worse than the latest debacle a few hours ago. Thanks again for kind words. Team quit. Nothing unusual or unexpected. Hope old John Petrino coaches well in playoffs. God bless you Mike,
To some extent, this game shows how good (the goaltender) was in the first eight games(?), because tonight’s mistakes weren’t new (amen). It just seemed like every time the Thrashers (not the forever out-of-position goaltender) screwed up tonight, the Flyers scored a goal (seven of them to be exact).
It was not a blanket absolution (spelling) for a totally unacceptable ball-less seven goal debacle but close to it. No room for accountability? Thinking like that will keep seats justifiably empty. Are you related to the goaltender?

From a prideless but honest Thrasher:
“(The Thrashers) weren’t ready (ya think?), and from the start we didn’t have the effort we wanted (duh),” Thrasher forward Colby Armstrong confessed. “There was a couple of good bounces for them (not in a 7-0 butt-kicking), but at the same time the game was there for us (not after the untalented goaltender surrendered one of his trademark early goals). After they got up a few (3,4,5 up), we just kind of folded the tent (quit, quit, QUIT).”
Thank you Colby for confirming what everyone saw.

Y’all know I love Kovalchuk. But at 2-0, #17 changed the game. Rant on the goalie all you want, but it was Kovalchuk’s errant pass that wound up on Flyer tape, and led DIRECTLY to game-crushing short-handed goal. But it didn’t end there. And this is where I thought Ilya had ‘turned the corner’ as a pro. He took a series of penalties, for which there was no need. He took them … because he was embarrassed by what he’d just done. With seconds left in the 2nd stanza, his miscue led to the 3-0 score. Kovy couldn’t handle it, overreacted, and the official took him to task. The result of which were not one, but TWO more Flyer PPG’s. Yes, Kari was in net, but the PP’s happened because of Kovalchuk. Ilya sat there, in the box, watching two more go in. Had Sid Crosby been there, he’d have been the one pointing at Kovalchuk.
At 5-0, there just isn’t any coming back from that. And I felt terrible for John Anderson, who was perhaps making his national TV debut as our Head Coach, and even got interviewed by Christine Simpson. Kari stopped the penalty shot. It was a nice save. But, the Flyers never let up. In any league, 7-0 is a beatdown.
I know you don’t want to hear this … but this is a build year, (TM, Poster Bob, all rights reserved,) and in build years, the building team has the to take its lumps. We took some lumps tonight. If this team put forth 3 straight wins, we’re looking at .500. Three more losses, especially regulation time losses, and it’s a hard climb back. But the way I look at it, each loss in a “build year” brings us closer to landing a franchise player in June, at the Draft.
Thrasher fan may find this of little comfort, but the Flyers aren’t thiiis much better than we are. This is game that snowballed out of control, due to senseless penalties that broke the team’s back. The next game against the Flyers won’t be this bad.

terptwin - Mr. Levenson, after ten years of mediocrity, misinformation, and rising ticket prices why should we continue to “stay the course.”
If you want to see a change in your current declining ticket sales patterns, fire Waddell and watch your customers return. Your GM is causing other players to stay away or try to get out of Atlanta as quickly as possible. The damage is done, with the players, agents, and fan base. There is only one solution left, fire Don.
Nearly everyone recognizes the problem, fire Waddell, and your former customers will be more inclined to “give you a little slack.” Otherwise, you will be forced to commit breach of contract with your remaining season ticket holders by offering discounts that you stated you would not offer at last year’s Town Hall Meeting.

Danny, Chevy Chase owns several lumber yards. But I notice he doesn’t spend much time there. In fairness, he doesn’t know where they are.
It’s much the same with the Atlanta Spirit, LLC running the show. Is it really necessary to state what the intent of the season is … when the salary cap is nearly $57 million … and the “Opening Night” budget is a little over $45 million? What team has MORE CAP SPACE than Atlanta? In short, does it “seem” like the organization is gunning for the Cup?
But don’t expect Waddell to comment on it. He keeps his job by stifling himself. I’m sure he’d like to utter a mouthful about the budget he has to work with. The ownership has paid for a 25th to 29th place team, based on its spending. It asks Waddell to be something of a “miracle worker” to not only get the team into contention, but to obfuscate that the team is but “1-2 players away” from seriously contending … and that all that is necessary is a few “tweaks” at the trade deadline. Waddell wets his finger … holds it up in the air … and watches to see if anyone bought it.
If dwindling attendance is any indicator, P.T. Barnum isn’t as successful as he once was. Waddell isn’t exactly being empowered to fix things. So, what options does he have, but to dress his draft picks? The Tier I free agents didn’t exactly bang down his door in the offseason, demanding to play in Atlanta. He took a serious shot at Brian Campbell. And, in an effort not to come away empty-handed, he signed Ron Hainsey on the 2nd or 3rd day of the “frenzy.”
What I believe is … the intent is to develop the draft picks, like Bogosian, Little, Sterling, Oystrick, perhaps even Valabik, at some point. Even guys like Slater and Enstrom need more seasoning. Since the Thrashers are not thought to be an upper echelon team, this is the perfect opportunity to do just that, while expectations are low.
As for Anderson, he’s just coming off a Championship season in the AHL, and the idea or concept of “losing” is foreign to him. He’s Coached teams to several minor league titles. The “idea” of losing doesn’t occur to him. His focus is on winning. His objective … is to reach the playoffs. I doubt any member of the organization is going to come right out and say, “We’ve got no chance this year.” They want to try to sell some tickets.

No doubt about it. Game last night was a stinker. Kovy was about as bad as he can be. I thought Kari looked shaky in first period and was surprised JA didn’t yank him after goal #4. It may be the worst game I’ve seen live in last 4 seasons. That being said, we will have to see how they bounce back in NYC. Oh yeah……stendec remains an idiot. Thank you Stendec… you are about the only thing that has made me feel better about last night. I will admit, I was totally depressed and angry after watching was has looked like an improving team so far this season, turn into the late 2007-2008 Thrashers. Really pitiful. But then to log on this morning and read the totally insane rants of Mr. Stendec… ahhhh, the world starts to make sense again. I have been amusing myself all morning picturing what this freak looks like. My guess is he is fairly short - maybe around 5’6 -5’8 - pretty old - at least 65 - and just totally bat-sh!t crazy. I can totally see him hunched over his out-dated computer and screaming at his television and drinking something straight out of the bottle. Probably occasionally pounding his fist on the table before typing out another line of insane banter. Did the Thrashers bang your wife or something??? How can you take something you are so far away from so personally?
If I’m wrong, I hope I don’t find out, because thinking of this poor little guy makes me feel a lot better about the Thrashers.

I actually didn’t think the game as a whole looked that bad. The score, yes. The individual effort, in some cases.
I was particularly disappointed in Toby Enstrom and Ilya Kovalchuk. Enstrom just could not catch a break — he misread the rush several times, fell in front of a goal that went in off his skate, and just wasn’t mentally on it. Kovalchuk failed to finish, then turned into a whiny baby, giving Philly a chance to score. 4 minutes of chances, actually. Which is just stupid for an adult who should know better. I was not entirely thrilled with anyone other than the checking line, which not only held the line but got off scoring chances and remained even on the +/- measurement. And Todd White’s faceoff % was awesome.
I agree that Philly got some lucky bounces. And that penalty shot should never have been granted. However, I’m still deeply annoyed at the performance of the PP, and last night the PK did poorly as well.

7 times 7 equals 49, not 63. Carry on…
Actually, it should be 7 times 6 equals 42, right?

Every team has a bad night - how many pucks bounced off a skate into the goal or right to the stick on someone in front of goal? Bad games happen, and it’s the FIRST game this year that the Thrashers looked bad in. Every other game has been close and had the effort - calm down all you crazy back seat managers.

Or, 7 times 3 equals 21. Regardless, you got the point.

ThrashersFan oh let them have their fun. They’ve being waiting nearly a month to have a good excuse to pop off…poor schmoe’s might have exploded if the Thrashers hadn’t had a meltdown soon. I mean, they were trying to find things to complain about but as this game clearly shows, the Thrashers (and Kari) have in fact truly played well this season right up until 7 PM last evening.
And please do not attempt to be rational or logical…they don’t like that either. It upsets them. They don’t want to hear things like:
“They are a better team than they showed tonight.”
And really don’t tell them one of the Flyers said that.
All of that said, the team looked like sh*t last night all over the ice. Ugh I hate those games where it’s just one darn thing after another and they can’t get anything going right. Flashbacks to Buffalo.
But to put this in perspective:
Last season, Montreal got shellacked by Ottawa 6-1, Pitt got smacked by these same Flyers 8-2, Pitt in turn b-slapped NJ 7-1 (now there’s an accomplishment and yes Brodeur was in goal). Detroit got popped twice by 5-1 which doesn’t sound that bad until you find out it they took their worst losses against us and Columbus. Dallas got nailed 5-0 by Phoenix and San Jose got pasted 7-1 by Buffalo. So yeah even the best teams do actually get punked once in a while. On the flip-side, this team has gotten punked a lot more than once in a while historically. But it’s the first time this season it’s happened so I’m all for giving them a pass, getting a new one ripped by their Coach, and never EVER EVER EVER letting that happen again…especially on national television.

Dear Atlanta, Please understand why your team will NEVER be the National TV Game of the Night again. You have to actually play the game. You just gave us good reason to never schedule your team again.

Oh, forgot to mention, I can’t wait for Hoffman to come up.
My lines would look generally like so:
Kovy - White - Thorburn Koz - Crushah - Little Army - Reasoner - Perrin Boults - Slater - Hoffman
Working in Williams as makes sense, of course.

Kovy-Crush-Armi
Little-Willi-Sterling
Slava-Reasoner-Hoffman(if he is ready or Thorburn)
Slater-White-Boulton/Perrin.

Dear Network Exec,
Thank you for taking the time to pull your lips off of a NE US or Canadian market to speak to us “lesser” hockey fans.
We, the fans of Atlanta, apologize that our team did not live up to the lofty viewer expectations that have been set by our predecessors such as the Rubix Cube Championship, Wheelchair Badminton, and Underwater Basket Weaving. We appreciate that while there was down time between poker and bass fishing that you took a chance and put on a sport that more than a handful of people appreciate. I know it went against the norms of your station, so I can understand that this was a horrendous mistake on your part.
I’m sure that when you saw “Philadelphia Flyers” you immediately assumed that this was an Synchronized Diving event due to Daniel “On My Derriere” Briere being on their roster. I apologize for the confusion, next time we will post our event in a much more understandable language so that even you can understand hockey is a team sport, not a beauty pageant (that’s for your Sunday afternoon block).
Once again, thank you for taking the time out of your BUSY schedule to come to a hockey blog full of hockey fans and tell us how a lack of effort by a team none of us play on is going to affect our chances of exposure in the future.
Sincerely,
My Middle Finger

I am ok with your lines, except I might flip-flop the 2nd and 3rd, and I think your 4th would get clobbered. Perrin can probably take a beating, but White would be on the IR or sitting on the bench with “bruising” within 2-3 games.

The Thrashers are as irrelevant as the Flames turned out to be 30 years ago. Look, you can’t fit the stepdaughters size 12 into the glass slipper. All the hype in the world will NEVER make Atlanta and/or the south into Hockey country. Ain’t gonna happen. People only have so much time and especially money to devote to sports. Hockey would be somewhere between 35-50 on that list. LOL It’s only a matter of time till the Thrashers too are long gone. Ignoring that simple fact is being a complete fool. End of story.

ranallo10 - You’re on a roll today.
BTW, there was one saving grace to the game last night. There weren’t as many Flithy fans as normal.
On a fun note, I yelled stendec after every goal, wondering what I was going to read once I returned home. stendec didn’t disappoint.
During the game, I screamed refund for the cost of parking and gas. I sure was glad the tickets were free.

Knobler — If Bogosian were to play more than 10 games in the NHL, what options remain for him? By this point he is considered a professional hockey player (having played professional hockey, due to that 10+ games rule you mentioned above)…so would he be allowed to play in the OHL?
He’s too young to go to the AHL, unless there’s a clause in their rules stipulating “unless the under aged player has played one season of professional hockey”.
So really, what options would Waddell have after 10 games??

With all due respect ThrashersFan, how many games have you watched? A blogger with an “S” initial HAS to be a Thrasher groupie. Think 7-0 not too bad? What IS bad? 10-0, 15-0, 30-0? This is supposed to be the NHL not the Olympics!

Ahem. I appreciate you looking in Tommysteele. Thanks for the kind words. Like Rawhide a lot. Real nice man. Just will not post on his site. Idol worship differences. Thanks again. I am not liked on this site because I refuse to unquestionably accept ineptitude from paid professional athletes. I speak my mind. Right or wrong. No matter who likes or dislikes it. I prefer wins and championships but I am in the minority on this site. These deceived fans prefer statistics. Have at them. Those of Thrasher goaltender in newest Ice Man entry courtesy of Tommysteele so do not blame me this time. What hope do Thrashers have under John Petrino? Sit, trade or banish (pick one) What’s-His-Name and Moose. Chain Pavs between the pipes then roll the dice. Hey, a 7-0 loss under a young goaltender hurts just as much as a 7-0 loss under an untalented veteran goaltender with supposed potential which will remain as such until the day he dies! The no-score offense must go. We were not shut out at home by a great defensive team with a stellar netminder! There is no player on this team that can put a puck in the net on a consistent basis. NOT ONE! Bring in the Hansen Brothers from the Charleston Chiefs. The wimpish p+ssywhipped attitude of the team was embarrassing! Actually nauseating. The Thrashers exposed themselves on national television as being soft, gutless, talentless, clueless, defenseless, ball-ness, prideless and (choose a)less! Hey, many of these were on other hockey sites. Fight. Show some pride. At least ACT like men! Can the team average two goals per game? Highly unlikely. Will goaltenders allow three or more goals per night? Almost certainly. How many goals will Ilya “Moving On” Kovalchuk score? If he is really lucky around 25 or 30. Playoffs. Playoffs? Thrasher fans are gut-punched enough already. Do not play that joker card!

Wrong blog stendec — “tommysteele” has only been posting in Rawhide’s blog to trumpet your astute observations. Interestingly enough, there are a few other “new” people doing the same…
I wonder how much of that is a just a “coincidence”.

*WHAT!? Are you a Moron? Do you even watch the games? This has happened everytime the have lost! We are sick of it! *
Ummm no Jimmy, actually this is the first time this season they have lost by more than a two-goal margin. As for being a moron, I’m not the one who has to resort to a word like “moron” to try and make a point. If your brain can’t come up with something more sophisticated and substantial than that, I truly feel sorry for you.
Now do you watch hockey is likely a better question (or read more than one line of a post). Brand new coach + a rookie d-man + 2 sophomores + 5 brand spanking new players + 3 who have been with the team less than one season + brand new system = bumps in the road. Always, in any market, on any team. And thus far they have been competitive in every game except the one last night.
Let me put this another way. If the team had been 0-8 coming into last night and had won 7-0, you negative nellies would be saying “it’s only one game, it does not matter, anyone can have a lucky night but winning one out of nine means nothing.” Yet they only lose one game badly and somehow that one game is the microcosm for the entire season?
I conceded I can understand why some people would be upset - this isn’t the first time it has happened to this franchise over the past nine seasons however it is the first time it has happened to this team - and there is a difference between those two things. You judge the team on what they accomplish this season. If what happened last night happens over and over this season, then we will all be ticked off. But thus far it’s happened once, early in the season, and none of us know how the coach or team will react afterwards (other than the abundant use of four-letter words).
Crawling all up this team’s @ss is exactly where Hartley went wrong because he over-killed it. The whole point of the Anderson Era is a new attitude…which any psychologist will tell you does not get a 180 adjustment overnight or even over a month. This team already excels at beating itself down mentally and taking themselves out of games - they don’t really need anyone encouraging that practice further….unless you want to see more games like last night’s.
And if you are really that sick of it, well, I’m sure even you can find the exit.

Stendec,
I have watched just about every game on TV or in person that I could since the middle of the first season. I used to VCR them if I wouldn’t be home before DVR’s were out and have made at least 10 games a year since then as well. I have been to 3 games already this season, including last night.
There were better times in this franchise for sure. But you can’t keep talent in a small market team very easily. Look at the players who have left our city and you will know why it’s been hard to build this team.
Also, look at the fan support - most people going to games don’t even know this hockey history of this city. Someone I talked to last night didn’t even know the Flames were originally from here… that’s bad marketing and PR - maybe we should fire DW for that.
It’s sad that the comments on here are always so negative. It WAS a bad game last night - we didn’t show up, philly had some lucky bounces and Kovy made a mess for himself at the end of the 2nd period. Somehow I bet we bounce back just fine by the next game.
Oh, and to Stendecs comments about being embarrased on National TV - From my memory it’s usually the Thrashers showing up quite well on National TV and winning most of their games….
Was that too logical Sara? Or is

Terptwin —
Good afternoon, Mr. Levenson. Last night, you posted this:
Keep supporting this team. It will eventually improve through coaching and managerial changes, and player development. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day!
When, pray tell, will you make a managerial change? We’ve already gone through several coaching changes, and with Anderson now behind the bench, it is as clear as day that coaching is not the issue here in Blueland. Throughout the years this organization has been in town, there’s one thing that has never changed, and that is our general manager. You speak of managerial change? Well, let’s see it.

Sorry ThrashersFan, I didn’t catch that. I’m completely used to people in these parts saying that in all seriousness, that my “sarcasm” and “joke” detector are all out of whack.
I’m surprised nobody blamed him for the line painting error in Boston.

Renallo, ha!
I am sure it was DW’s fault for the Boston painting error. I mean, he signed Shane Hnidy and Savard and both ended up in Boston which means he is secretly sabotaging the Thrashers. Plus he knows someone in Detroit which is why we lost there and our former announcer who came back again announced for the Wild which is why we lost against them.
It’s all a conspiracy of magnificent proportions. DW is actually the Devil himself from what I can read on these blogs.
