Have a Kahlua, perhaps
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Today’s story about the naming of the Greek Gods line got me thinking, and that’s always a dangerous thing. What would you call the scoring line of Ilya Kovalchuk-Todd White-Bryan Little?
So I decided to throw it out there for wiser heads than mine, but not before jump starting the discussion with a suggestion of my own: the Kahlua Line, as in Little White Russian. It’s 6:59 a.m. as I type this at Hartsfield Jackson while waiting to board my flight to Tampa, so maybe I’m, um, Kahlua-less, but it’s my best idea. What’s yours?
While you’re thinking, here’s another tale about a named line involving a current Thrashers personality. It was 1979-80, and the Toronto Maple Leafs had a combination of Rocky Saganiuk, current Thrashers coach John Anderson and Laurie Boschman, who combined to score 60 goals in the season’s final 55 games. They called them the Kid Line.
“Then the next year we couldn’t score a goal,” Anderson said. “We went from the Kid Line to the Skid Line.”

Wow - morning Mike. You have my condolences - I can think of a million better places to be at 7 AM than Hartsfield…bed comes to mind. :D On the plus side - at least you will get to see the game tonight - a priviledge the rest of us apparently won’t get.
I liked the story on the Greek Gods. BTW, I’m curious how Kamal’s buddy saw Slater fitting in. Most of the fans looked at it as he’s a former Spartan, so that got him “Greek” cred.
Little White Russian - cute. Better than what I can come up with this early in the morning with less than a full cup o’ joe on board - which is basically nada. We’ve got some pretty witty types floating around though…I’m sure some others can come up with something good.

How about “The Finnish Plug” for Kari? I can’t think of anything that rhymes with Finnish. Maybe “The Finnish Finish”?

The St. Louis Blues had the “kid” line of their own way back (I think it was the middle-to-late 70’s) someone can check on the exact date because the line was Brian Sutter, Bernie Federko & Wayne Babich. That predates the Flames “kid” line.

Bob’s probably right. They need to produce for a while before any tag goes much farther than a blog. Kamal could try them out for a fit, maybe.

Nice turn of phrase Knobes, but I have to go with Bob-I think it’s a bit early to be slapping these guys with a name yet. Now let’s see if they keep up this 2PTS per production (and the team strings some Ws together), then maybe we come up with a cool/cute name.

Just finished the morning skate. Same lineup as in the shootout victory Saturday night over Buffalo. Colby Armstrong told me he’s good to go, after a hit from Erik Christensen. “I’m just a little sore, but it’s a bruise,” Armstrong said.
7:30 p.m. start tonight on 680 AM. Should be interesting. Tampa Bay has played everybody within a goal but has yet to win. John Anderson said it’s key for the Thrashers to match the Lightning’s intensity from the start, as Tampa Bay is going to be eager to get its first victory.

Too early…way too early.
I like Little, and I like that he’s on Kovalchuk’s line and performing well, but this season is still in the early stages. I agree with Tony C. and Bob and kracker that it’s far too early to be naming any lines, especially the one bright spot.
But as for line names, Kahlua is far better than “bad fairy”.

Honestly “White Lightning” sounds the best to me-I think people need to embrace the fact our team is from GA, not anywhere else-I mean let’s throw bass-fish on the ice before big games-I dunno something.

The sainted Thrasher goaltender finally prevailed! The clueless netminder was bailed out after putting his team in a 2-0 hole. A late goal forged a 2-2 deadlock. The Atlanta boys were primed for victory. **The goaltender would have none of that! A pathetic shootout effort left the Thrashers with a bitter 3-2 debacle loss. If this untalented goaltender has lost his shootout edge (which WAS his only redeeming quality) then he has nothing else to offer worth a damn! Way to get a point Thrashers. Winning in spite of not because of…oh forget it. Apologists on this blog will never open their eyes to view the truth! BTW - I do not want to read a damn thing about save percentages. My humble apologies to all. I have erred. Overtime goal for loss instead of shootout goal for loss DOES make me all warm and fuzzy inside. Glad shootout status of the goaltender still alive. Guess that since it was a power play goal the netminder should be soothed and coddled. BS! Did not have access to broadcast. Misread AJC box. Again, my mistake. Got totally disgusted when I saw Thrashers went into tank. AGAIN! Looks like the goaltender and I do have something in common. Both of us slip up at most inappropriate of times. Know what a loss and dead fish both have in common? They both stink on and off the ice! Maybe next year…or century. Nighty night. God bless.

Hey, let’s be grateful for salvaging a point from a 2-0 deficit, on the road, going into the 3rd period. Ask any “objective” fan, and they’ll tell you that’s an achievement.
Okayyyy, Lethonen was, apparently, responsible for putting the puck in his own net for the 2nd Bolts goal. Purely by accident, of course. The guy made 35 saves. That’s a good night’s work.
Great road point, I’d say. We’re still a .500 club, at 2-2-2. It sure beats 0-6-0.

The losing Thrasher goaltender had a .921 save percentage with 35 saves. Tampa Bay goalie Mike Smith had a .939 save percentage with 33 saves. The Lightning was winless. The Thrasher netminder took care of that. With a little OVERTIME activity! How are THOSE stats? Hey, at least the Falcons win against teams they are SUPPOSED to defeat. Tom. Enjoy seeing the Thrashers go bellyup against a winless team? Falling short against a favored foe is no disgrace. Actually kind of noble. Gagging against an INFERIOR team must not be tolerated. Hell, the high save percentage which does not mean a damn thing Thrasher LaLa Land goaltender should have been given an assist on the second TB goal if not the outright goal credit! Am I wrong? It’s unfortunate that Little got the tripping penalty. Or that one of our shots didn’t go in early in the OT period.
It sounded like the guys kept battling throughout and salvaging a big point is, well…big. My goal of attending my next game (Nov. 2) with a .500 record or being within a point of it is on pace.
By Sara
October 22, 2008 7:38 AM | Link to this
David I’ll back you up on that. This team is literally at .500 - six games, six points. That is more than I had hoped for in the early going of the season. The theory has to be that the longer the season goes, the better this team is going to get. More chemistry, better execution of the system, better attitudes. Are there still lots of concerns? Sure there are - flat play, anemic PP, still getting outshot consistently. But yet despite all of that, the team is still getting points.
Folks this is the perfect measure…at this point last season, the Thrashers were 0-6, with zero points, and the news was Hartley fired. 2-2-2 versus 0-6-0? No confusion there about which record is better.
As for Anderson talking about the play-offs - DUH!!! That should always be the goal every season for every team. Otherwise, why bother to play? Is it realistic for every team - no, not always. But I want a coach and a team that makes that its goal from day-one of training camp. It’s about having the right attitude as part of the team culture. Don’t knock that.

Stendec is a grouchy little idiot……That game was about as much of a must win for TB as possible……certainly there were mistakes and I agree that the team needs to improve, but you take this game last year and the Thrashers lose the game 5-0 or 6-0…..they showed guts and determination to eek out a point….it sucks to giev up 2 to a division rival, but they are hating life more giving one up at home. This year, we make mistakes and still get points….that is a good sign…..again, much room for improvement, but it is very obvious that this is a better team than last year and Kari is playing very well for this team…..it’s time to start putting those chances in the net….hoep to see Sterling get a chance in a few games the next week. I say sit Slater and move Crusher to 4th line. Did I mention Stendec is an idiot?

Even though I didn’t get to see this game - This Shootout loss (or was it OT?) is clearly the fault of our worthless Swede D-man Havenot. Once again was in Lala Land and didn’t score a single goal when one in regulation would have netted team two points. Does this untalented loser not understand that if he puts the puck in the net it will help his team win? Apoligists line-up and tell me how this team wouldn’t be 6-0 right now if not for the worst d-man in the NHL. Lucky to have six points in six games with him on team.

It is apparent that Stendec has a deep passion for the Thrashers that few on this site truly understand. Read between the lines. He wants nothing but good things for this hockey team. Has he not been correct in many of his assessments to date? If I remember, he even made a game time call last season which was right on. Let him have his say. What can it hurt?
By Alan
October 22, 2008 10:19 AM | Link to this
tommysteel - stendec might be passionate about the Thrashers, but he really needs to get his facts straight. Blaming the goalie for every single goal, every single loss, is unacceptable. The blame here is squarely on Bryan Little for taking such a horrible penalty in OT, giving Tampa the opportunity to score the winning goal.
He has not been correct in many of his assessments to date, as you say, and as far as his game time call last year? Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
I mean no disrespect to stendec, but I feel it would be best if he didn’t blame everything on Lehtonen. Remember, the league did reduce the size of goalie equipment in the offseason.
In a discussion about a team we all share love and passion for - regardless of how we really feel about front office personnel or the ownership group - cooler heads will prevail, and everyone can thusly come to an understanding. However, with the ranting and raving coming from stendec, it sets the tempo, and having a cool head with the sort of comments he tends to make is nigh impossible.

tommysteel I’ll back Alan up on this one. The problem is the difference between being a fan and a true fanatic. Stendec goes overboard on his constant bashing of Kari. Rarely does he even spread the blame around. The team loses 1-0 to one of the best teams of the last decade in front of the best goaltender in the league and possibly ever and what does stendec do? He bashes Kari for giving up one goal. It’s ridiculous.
Secondly, and this is the problem that some on the blogs have with other regular bloggers - it’s frequently all negativism, all the time. It gets really friggin’ old coming to the blogs every day to wade through all the same crap about the GM or the players or the sheep or whatever. The problem I have with it is I think that’s the whole point for some of these people. It isn’t about “their way of supporting their team,” or trying to effect change, or anything other than trying to make everyone else around them as miserable as possible since they themselves aren’t happy. Why else - because everyone who posts regularly already knows how Bob/Dave/Sage/LAC/stendec feel about certain members of management and/or players. No newsflashes there. They aren’t really changing anyone else’s minds either - most people already have their viewpoints on these issues - some in agreement, others not. It certainly isn’t going to get Don Waddell fired or some player waived/traded/demoted/benched etc etc.
Being critical of players/team/coach/management/marketing department/owners/mascot/announcer/fans in section 319-320 is all fine and good in a constructive way. But the incessant griping/whining/moaning/kvetching is utterly ridiculous, ineffectual, and annoying. Basically at that point you take out your own possible credibility. Although that said, I’ve found it works wonders for the disposition when you see one of those said names at the top of a post and just keep on scrolling. (I haven’t read a post by Bob in nearly a month and my blood pressure probably didn’t break 120. I cut out LAC, Sage, and Dave and now hover about 100. It’s great!)
All I can say is get some new material - especially for stendec - he needs something more positive in his life to focus on than Kari Lehtonen (or Keith Brooking for that matter) before he has a complete coronary. Totally not healthy - or uplifting to the spirits.

i listened to the game last night, kamal does a good job. “h” is correct, its probably 5-0 after 2 last year, Kari is carrying the team, he is left out to dry night after night because of JA’s style, if Kari is ok with that, then we should be too. We, myself included, will need to forget about last years start, as the Thrashers have and move forward. looking forward to heading north to see the Thrashers soon.

Let me try to answer the question about Christensen, Reasoner, Perrin and the Greek Gods. Reasoner and Perrin are contributing big-time on the penalty kill, which has been looking better and better. The Greek Gods are doing what they do, which is hitting and scrapping and, with one notable exception, not giving up goals. One of those guys, Slater, also is a key penalty killer.
Christensen is likely to be the subject of my next story.

I read Knobler’s story about Anderson saying he’s getting us ready for a deep run into the playoffs. NHL coaches must not be subject to drug testing, because Anderson has to be high if he thinks this team is going deep into the playoffs.

I’ll do my best nascar dave…….”oh my god!!! How bad are the Red Wings!! Pavel Datsyuk….has he found the net yet? NOPE!!! he’s horrible!!! Kris Draper??? Does he even know where the goal is??? Does anyone on this team play defense? Cleary? -4 (he sucks), Brad Stuart -4 (nice pick up)….flippula….oh great signing… he’s -3…they should fire their GM right now….or the ownership should just sell the team….Hossa??? he’s on a pace for 16 goals…..trade him now while you can….what a joke of a team”….see….you can do that anywhere and with any team….try something new…try to be original….try evaluating players on how they play….not by reading a scoresheet…. Ask Joe Maddon from the Rays if he told his team at the beginning of the year he just wanted them to be a .500 team.

of course this team is better than last year. JA is a winner, it will translate with the big boys too. i also think DW built this team for a coach like JA, yeah, i know, DW has failed pretty badly on most of his moves. But maybe this one works out. hey Mike, when is Moose gonna play? Friday or saturday?

Interesting that the AJC and bloggers here can spend so much time worrying about friggin names for lines instead of the team issues.
Stendec should find a real NHL team to root for….I have bought center ice and it’s so much more fun than finding the moral wins that this franchise is still stuck in. Until they fire Waddell I will merely check the standings once a week or month for this dismal team and will NEVER spend a dime for their tickets until a Falcon front office like change occurs. A team that gives up over 30 shots and 3 goals per game will never be truly successful. Period. You can argue and justify, but by independent standards, this is fact.
It is quite apparent that the bloggers left following this pathetic entity are not from real hockey areas or their expectations would be along the same lines as Stendec and they too would not waste time reaching so far to find positive things to say about this team.
Enjoy your bliss and pray that they sell this POS to owners who care about hockey.
Go Falcons!
