Thrashers lead division!

OK, so the headline of this blog entry is more than a little tongue in cheek. But it hasn’t been often that the Thrashers have been 1-0. How rare is it? Well, it happened only twice before.

So enjoy it, Thrashers fans. Enjoy the fact you’re leading not only Florida, Washington and 0-2 Tampa Bay in the standings but also have a better record than the defending Stanley Cup champions in Detroit.

Here was John Anderson’s message at the morning skate: Don’t get satisfied. Don’t look at the back-to-back games to open the season and decide that winning one and losing one is an OK start.

Anderson made an interesting choice for tonight’s game: Same personnel as last night, with neither Brett Sterling nor Nathan Oystrick thrown in for their fresh legs, and Kari Lehtonen back in net. It’s a go-with-your-best message, telling his team he’s serious about trying to build on Friday night’s victory over the Capitals instead of seeing that success as taking the pressure off for tonight’s game.

Anderson is aware of his team’s struggles last season in the second of back-to-back games. He has addressed it head on.

That doesn’t mean he’s ignoring the issues of back-to-backs. For example, he gave Mathieu Schneider the option not to take part in this morning’s skate, and Schneider took him up on it. Schneider’s not hurt; he’s just 39. Nobody in the locker room will begrudge Schneider the morning off, Anderson said.

Knobler - You may have just jinxed us. Hockey fans are a very superstitious.

In the words of Elmur Fudd, “be verwe verwe quiet.”

Wow, kinda surprising that Moose doesn’t get the nod, but I like how JA is trying to instill confidence in his guys by trusting them to come out, play hard and perform. I think it helps him knowing Fla is coming off a road game last night so I’m hopeful it will work out. If Kari struggles in the 1st period though, I totally expect to see Hedberg by the 2nd.

Darn right! Win 2 points tonight to get that monkey off our back. I guess 1 point would be OK if it’s a come-from-behind tie.

The Panthers played last night, so let’s go 2-0 in division play. Win the division and we are IN! Here’s to hoping my 90 point guess was low-balling the team.

Hey Knobler how’s Bogosian feeling today?

I bet the left side of his face is feeling “tender” just now, sara.

KL is going to be challenged this year to prove it. I like that JA is going with him in the 2nd game~it’s early in the season, you want to be a “franchise” guy, you play 60+ games a year buddy.

betcha he does well tonight-losing McCabe definitely thins out their PP and I think they only have 1 legit scoring line…the D is rugged though-even with McCabe out.

It’s only one game, a home game at that, but the Thrash d-men had 6 points last night. Hainsey 1g, 1a - Havelid 3a - Enstrom 1a.

Goals last season by Thrashers defensemen: 13

Points last season by defenseman: 78

That is tough news about McCabe. The report says he has at least one fractured vertebrae and may have a broken back.

Sara I didn’t talk with Zach after the skate, but he’s got a vertical red line under his left eye. He can’t be that hurt; he’s playing.

Oh cmon Knobler hockey players are hurt all the time. It was Brashear, we’re just lucky Bogosian knew his name after being singled out by him.

Thrashers took early lead on road. Sori Letemin quickly wasted it! Score knotted after a period. Sure hope offense comes through. AGAIN!

Perhaps a bit overlooked were Havelid’s 3 assists last night. Boulton and Boynton just had a fight, after one of the Cats “tagged” Chris Thorburn. Nice to see an immediate response like that.

Smoothie, must have been one of the haters last night saying the sky is falling! The sky is falling!” when Kari let in two goals on the 4 minute minor? :)

Kari will be fine, settle down:)

Thrashers spent almost entire second period attempting to recover from goal Sori Letemin allowed in EARLY SECONDS of period. THEY SUCCEEDED! Deadlocked after two periods. Way to go offense. Oh Sisu, cannot get under rock when YOU are already there!

stendec, you are one of many who never payed hockey and probably know more about bull puppies than hockey in your whole life. So I guess you should be there instead of Darren Elliot???? Come on, we are all fans here, or are we? ;) Kari is solid and you have to deal with it!

What the F++K was SOLID Sori Letemin doing? Strolling through damn LaLa Land again when winning goal slips past his sorry A++. What an oxygen waste! Super team effort spoiled by this untalented FINN! All right apologists. Break out stats. Only stat which matters is that B+++++D has allowed seven damn goals in two games. Do the F+++++H math yourself! The announcers can lick his A++ all they want to. Same old unfocused quitter!

So F+++++G solid! I doubt an average of 3.5 goals per outing will get Thrashers to playoffs. John Anderson wants Sori Letemin to play 60 games? Guy seems to be decent coach. Just get him off crack cocaine! F+++++G Finn in net for 60 games? SHEESH! Ilya Kovalchuk has provren as unproductive as Maryann Hossa. When will he start capitalizing on FEW opportunities he receives each game? Totally disgusted!

Smoothie, must have been one of the haters last night saying the sky is falling! The sky is falling!” when Kari let in two goals on the 4 minute minor?

sisu — what the hell are you talking about?? Perhaps you should check your facts before running your trap like that. If you had bothered to read the blog you would know that I praised Kari for his play last night without which we would have won. Both PP goals on the double minor would have been goals against anyone…poor PK defense was the culprit. And again, Kari was stellar especially in the 3rd period when the team forgot to come out of the dressing room. Bad bounce in OT and Johhny on the Spot David Booth pounced on it.

stendec — take your tired act somewhere else. In fact, take a long walk off a short plank you dolt.

THREE points, guys! That’s a great start! Leading the SE division! Three home games coming up!

Sure, another W would have been sweet. Kovy just missed in the third. We did get a point on the second game of a back-to-back on the road.

These guys are still running around not all on the same page yet. Kari with another solid night, a .923 SV%. If he can keep that up for the first month, the Thrash should get their share of points while everybody learns each other and the system.

I am right about Sori Letemin. That will be proven with the passage of time. Do not feign shock when Ilya Kolvachuk bolts to whiter ice elsewhere. It will happen. No matter what has appeared in print or broadcast media. Thrashers will miss playoffs due to inferior netminding. That too is true. Wish these things were not true but they are. Live with it!

Decent game until OT. I thought we looked real timid out there… and it cost us.

But 3 of 4 points to start is a BIG + over last season.

Hi Mike. If you would prefer I not ctiticize the sainted Sori Letemin, uh, forgive me, Kari Lehtonen, I will vanish from this blog too. It is just that fans like myself have endured decades of professional sports ineptitude for so long. Blogs allow us to fight back. In a small way. Oh well. Cheers. Peace.

Stendec I’m not kicking anybody off the blog. OTOH, I think Lehtonen is the guy who kept the Thrashers in the game when the rest of the team ran out of gas.

Peter DeBoer used a couple of players who didn’t play Friday night. John Anderson didn’t. That might have paid off for the Thrashers early and cost the Thrashers late. Possibly a wash.

BTW, for what it’s worth, we got two more points from the blue line tonight. Assists from Hainsey and Havelid. This should be a big plus throughout the year.

I know my vision is lacking but I was almost sure I saw the goaltender (who will be referred to as such in all my future posts) misplay puck in overtime which wound up in the net for a humbling defeat to an inferior squad. If my eyes deceived me I apologize to everyone. Mistakes do happen. God bless you all! Maybe the Falcons will not disappoint. Thrasher loss certainly was. Forgive pessimism. Just tired of accepting ineptitude.

I think I figured out Standec’s hatred of Kari……the choppy sentences, the repeated reference to Kari being Finnish, the defeatist attitude, his love of Havelid and Enstrom….That’s it, Standec is Swedish.

3 points is a good result, considering how the team did last year in back to back games. The number of shots still concerns me but the guys are learning a new system and there are new faces. I think if the team can keep playing together and learn the new system the results will reflect this. Much better than 0-6 last year!
