Bogosian signing moves team one step further

Thursday’s news of the signing of Zach Bogosian puts the Thrashers one step closer to being ready for the season to open. There wasn’t a whole lot of suspense — after all, the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement sets strict limits for entry-level contracts — but it has to be good for all concerned that management and Bogosian got this out of the way before the prospect evaluation tournament in Traverse City, Mich., Sept. 13-17. You don’t want anything distracting your young future star from his hockey.

On another topic, here’s an interesting story about former Thrashers player Darcy Hordichuk.

Cool… not shocking… but cool.

The procrastination … is OVER! Not that the signing comes as a surprise. But it is still a relief. This is an important piece of the Thrashers future. And now, they’ve inked “the future.” Now, god-willing, nobody will trade him away. And, god-willing, Zach Bogosian is a responsible driver who isn’t interested in fast cars … or gambling … or drugs … or strippers/night clubs or any other distraction that sometimes befalls young athletes.

Today, is a wonderful day for Thrashers hockey. :)

The Thrashers have just released their TV schedule. All but 19 of their games will be shown on either Sports South or Versus. The first non-TV game is the third game of the season, against Minnesota.

Hey Mike, can you ask Waddell if its ok if we go ahead and pencil in Bogey in the lineup? I’d like to see a quote by him stating that Bogey will make the team this year. This way, when Bogey goes to Juniors, we will have another Waddell lie in print for all to see. Thanks.

Allen, Waddell has given no guarantees that Bogosian will make the team, and he didn’t today, either. OTOH, it would be a big surprise to me if he doesn’t make the team.

I wanted to come to Vancouver. From what I hear, it’s one of the best places to play.

I can’t recall a player ever saying the same or similar about coming to Atlanta.

Knobler — Will you be able to give us a roster for the prospect tournament?

Also, do you know the penalty that comes if Bogosian isn’t able to achieve all of his bonuses, and the team dips below the floor mid-season?

If there is no trade, and Bogosian doesn’t make the team, then we will start the season below the cap floor and forfeit at least some money from the league. (I can’t remember what we came up with for the penalty.) Even if he does make the team, that cap number is still only imaginary, and we will have to bring someone in once Bogosian doesn’t average 20 minutes a night, or whatever he’ll need to make his bonuses.

ranallo10 Don’t expect the Thrashers to dip below the floor. It’s not going to happen. The penalties are too steep.

I wrote about a potential penalty in a previous blog, but here’s a fuller description: A big, fat fine, plus the loss of draft picks, plus the possible suspension of any club employee responsible. On page 121 of the collective bargaining agreement, it says that any club found guilty of violating the terms of the CBA can be fined no less than $1 million and up to $5 million. The number, placement and league year of the forfeited draft picks are at the sole discretion of the commissioner.
