Home ice huge in the Final
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Well, I guess word got out. Thanks, Kincade. At the end of June, I’ll be leaving the AJC to be the national hockey writer for the Sporting News. It’s an exciting opportunity for me and my family and it allows us to move closer to home in Detroit. If you know a good real estate agent in Acworth, let me know.
I don’t want to make a big deal out of this because, if the rumors I’m hearing are correct, my replacement is fantastic. I just couldn’t leave without thanking you guys for your support and enthusiasm about hockey in Atlanta. The fact that this blog gets hundreds of comments has nothing to do with me, it says everything about your love and passion for a great sport. I’ve had a chance to meet many of you, and it’s always a lot of fun. Heck, some of you are the reason I had food in Montreal while I was stalking Marian Hossa in the hotel lobby on deadline day. So thanks for that.
I’m excited about what we’re going to be able to do at the Sporting News, and expect you guys to at least visit my blog there once in awhile. But I’ll miss Atlanta and the AJC. This is a class news organization with incredible people. It wasn’t an easy decision.
Alright, enough about me. How about some hockey?
I caught game three at TJ’s in Alpharetta. Thanks for the beers, Tim. Glad to see Pittsburgh decide to make a series of this because I was starting to doubt whether or not the Pens could hang with Detroit. How important is home ice? Check out this breakdown from James Mirtle’s blog. There are some great numbers, but here’s all you need to know. In Detroit, during game one, Sidney Crosby played over 70 percent of his 5-on-5 time against Lidstrom. In game three, that number dropped to 46 percent. Now are you surprised by his jump in production?
Horrible news out of Vancouver about the death of defenseman Luc Bourdon. If you haven’t yet, read this Iain MacIntyre piece in the Vancouver Sun: “Remembering the real Luc Bourdon.” It puts a very human side to the story, especially when you read a quote like this from Guysma Hache, Bourdon’s youth hockey coach: “I don’t know if you know Shippagan. It’s a very small city - only 2,500 people. We are a French community. The kids around here, they dreamed to have a chance to see Luc Bourdon bring the Stanley Cup here. He was a hero. That was the dream of a lot of kids… I lost a good friend today. I lost one of my sons.”
You knew this would happen soon enough - Doug Armstrong is back in the league running a team, this time in St. Louis. And in a class act by a class organization, according to the Post-Dispatch, the Blues extended the contract of current GM Larry Pleau through the 2009-10 season. Pleau will work with the Blues, but he’ll be in position to stay close with his wife who is battling cancer.
NHL GMs have been in Toronto for the combine and, for me, the most interesting thing is to follow prospect Nikita Filatov. He’s the wildcard of the upcoming draft and if he can convince teams he’s willing to come to the NHL, he’ll go pretty high. I know the Thrashers like him, but they’re still leaning towards one of those defensemen. The Thrashers No. 3 pick is also generating interest from other teams and Don Waddell hasn’t completely ruled out trading it. But nothing serious right now. According to the National Post, Filatov has turned down huge offers from the Russian Super League and he hopes that proves to the NHL he’s serious about coming over.
The Wolves jumped out to a 1-0 series lead in the Calder Cup Final. Bryan Little scored the game winner and he continues to have a strong playoffs. He’s the real deal, you guys should be excited about the play of Little and Ondrej Pavelec. Although I still think Hedberg comes back next year. I think it’s safe to say you can pencil Little in as a No. 2 center next season.

Craig-
Congratulations. I hope it works out well for you.
The last time I had a subscription to the Sporting News was in ‘06 and they were giving hockey 1 page of coverage per month. I wrote to editor John Rawlings and asked him why so little coverage and I was told, essentially, that hockey wasn’t popular. This is part of what he said in 2006:
“I have heard from many subscribers, such as you, and I’ve seen the great attendance figures for the first month of the season. Because of that, we will increase our coverage plans to once every three to four weeks.”
Has this increased? Or are you going for more money for less work?

Hi Craig, congratulations. Gas is pretty expensive up north, hope you got a hefty raise - you deserve it.
I still take Filatov.
I’m starting to feel that Waddell is waiting on an RFA offer sheet for Lehtonen… he will not re-sign Kari and he will take the draft pick compensation. This buys him more time (or, that’s what he thinks… ;D)
He will then re-sign Moose and go with Pavelec/Moose next season.
But I guess we’ll see what happens.

Congrats and Good luck Craig!
If Waddell can trade down to 5th-7th pick, get a solid defenseman in the deal, than I’m all for taking Filatov.
If Filatov is gone by then, I’d be happy with whoever’s left of Pietrangelo, Myers or Schenn.

Congratulations, Craig, on your selected by the Sporting News. You were published a few times during the season in that publication. I had a feeling they’d take notice of you. You will be missed.
There is ONE NAME that I’d be OVERJOYED to hear as the new beat-writer. But I don’t want to jinx it. The guy’s already got a sweet gig and may not want to leave it. Or split his time.
Craig, I’m very happy for you. People forget that we didn’t have an “interactive” blog until you arrived. That’s what made the blog better.

J(Z) — Sorry to hear about your cousin, that’s rough…especially someone of such a young age.
My thoughts are with the Bourdon family, I can’t begin to imagine what they’re going through.
Craig — Piggy backing off what Brendan said, there’s a difference between having passionate fans willing to debate/discuss the Thrashers, and having a passionate moderator sparking the conversations. You have been the person opening the conversations, providing a constantly updated forum for which we the fans can discuss the team, and you’ve done it at a level far better than your predecessors.
For that, I thank you, and wish you well in your new endeavor.
But as a related topic, isn’t it saying something about Atlanta as a hockey city when one of our solid media members who support the team leave for a better hockey opportunity?? Seriously, how many good hockey people who made their name in Atlanta have left for a bigger hockey market, also known as a “better job”? Jaffe and now Custance come to mind immediately.
If we (Atlanta) can’t keep our good hockey writers, what makes you (the Thrashers fans) think the city can keep or attract the good hockey talent??
Hokie — I’d definitely swap that pick for Erik Johnson and St. Louis’ second round pick. I’m just saying…but I’ve personally sold myself on Bogosian. I will be DISAPPOINTED if Atlanta drafts anybody other than Bogosian or Doughty, and hesitantly supportive if they trade down a spot or two to acquire a person like Filatov or Pietrangelo. Ideally, the #4 poick is offered so that team can guarantee themselves Filatov, in which case Doughty or Bogosian is still available to Atlanta, and a later round pick (or unproven player) is now in the possession of Atlanta. Kinda like Florida did with Bouwmeester.
Tony C. — A remark about your comment about Davidson hiring Armstrong (from the last Custance blog)…did you notice how Armstrong is going to take over the GM position in 2011, and is the Director of Player Personnel until that time?? If only something like that could be done here (like Nonis as the DPP, and Waddell slated to step out of the GM role in a season or two)…I’d be completely supportive.

Craig, Big time congrats to you. I know you have to continue to build on your work and the resume. I have really enjoyed all your coverage of the team. I don’t always post, but always read everything. Also, just thought you would like to know, I brought your work up a good bit last semester in a Media and Politics class at Ga State. Blogging, code of conduct, and the right way of going about representing yourself in the public with the media were the type of topics/examples. The professor was a former AP sports writer here, and she liked your work and was a big Thrashers fan like all of us here.
Good luck selling your house. I live in Kennesaw by the mountain. As soon as I wrap up my degree in July, my wife and I are planning on selling our house, if the market allows us, and moving to somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. Let us know if you get hooked up with a great real estate agent, I need one too.

There are two ways the Thrashers can move the #3:
If you just give up the pick entirely for a player, you had better get a very talented NHL ready youngster coming back…like a Shea Weber or Phil Kessel…two young player who happen to be rumored on the trading block.
Now Filatov is what makes having the 3 spot so interesting, because there may be an opportunity to trade down within the Top 6 picks, still get a decent roster player/prospect coming back in the process, and select one of the top defenseman in the draft.
One rumor says the Isle LOVE Filatov, they have the 5th pick. Now if word gets around that St. Louis is looking to take him as well, or if another team wants Filatov, we could get a roster player or prospect to move down a few spots and still take a kid like Schenn or Pieterangelo. The only problem is you don’t want to go too low in this draft, perhaps 6 or 7 is the farthest down I would go in this scenario. It is a deep draft, but the top defenseman are going to be gone after the 7th or 8th pick.

If I’m giving up my shot @ Bogosian, then I want a good young defender with a high expected upside, as well as your 1st & 3rd round picks.
Or
An established Defender who has A HIGH TOI avg., good +/- and basically is deisreable…that isn’t going to be an FA for at least 2 seasons. As well as your 1st round pick.
I’m with Alan, if I’m giving up Bogosian, I get real greedy

Of course, your scenario is more likely (and probably more desireable) B.
By Brendan
May 31, 2008 12:20 AM | Link to this
I can’t see a scenario that we’d trade the #3 overall pick, barring some truly outlandish offer. Third overall is still a very nice spot. Take it!!! For God’s sake!! I’ll presume here that Stampkos goes first (1st) overall. Even if L.A. trades the #2 overall pick to some team coveting a defenseman, that still leaves either Doughty or Bogosian at #3. Why panic??
Obviously, we need a Tier I defensemen to anchor our blueline for the coming years. I think either Doughty or Bogosian fulfills that need. Moving the third overall pick is risky business, barring a King’s ransom in return. And who’d offer that?? Realistically. Stop. I’m not going to entertain “king’s ransom scenarios.” Moving right along.
Anytime we’re talking about moving a high-end lottery draft pick for an established, high-caliber NHL player, we’re talking about asking someone who didn’t CHOOSE to play in Atlanta to come to our market, presumably to “save it.” I’d rather just draft our player. Yes, the draftee didn’t pick Atlanta, either. But there’s big difference there. The drafted player is just trying to show the world that he belongs in the NHL and can be a major star in the NHL. In theory, he’s just happy for the opportunity, wherever it is that that opportunity presents itself.
The only trade scenario that makes any kind of sense to me … is to take our #3 pick and try to go higher. As Tampa is in our own division, I think that’s wholly out of the question. That leaves Los Angeles. Would L.A. be willing to move down to #3 overall?
Hmmn. Stay with me. If it’s true that they want Doughty … and that Atlanta AGREED not to select Doughty at #2, then I think such a trade is possible. L.A. would still get the player they want, plus they’d extort something in return from Atlanta. Just what that “something” might be is a bit of a mystery. Keep the Maalox handy, since Waddell’s still in charge. We can’t offer our 2nd round pick, #33 overall, as that belongs to St. Louis, via the Tkachuk trade. Bygones.
I think there’s a very realistic chance that Atlanta can select Bogosian at #3 overall, if it’s true that the Kings covet Doughty more. So, I can’t see the value of trading ANYTHING to Los Angeles for a player who’d still available to us at #3 overall.
Okayyy. If the rumors aren’t true that the Kings want Doughty more, then what? Well, I still think Doughty is a heckuva player. I’d pick him at #3, if L.A. passes on the guy. What I fear is that we’ll get snookered into giving something up good to move up to #2, to go get Bogosian. Especially if L.A. had their hearts set on Doughty all along. Can’t blame L.A. for trying to extort all they can, in that scenario, while getting the player they desired from the onset. That’s called using the power of their draft position. If only we’d done the same thing in 2002, threatening Florida that we’d take Bouwmeester if they proceeded with the trade of the 1st overall pick to Columbus. The net result of which would have been that Florida calls off the trade with Columbus and Atlanta is then free to take Rick Nash with the 2nd overall pick. Or, Atlanta agrees not to select Rick Nash, but gets Columbus’ 1st round pick in 2003, which turned out to be 4th overall, good enough to select someone like Tomas Vanek, and still have Lehtonen. Bygones. Waddell said Lehtonen was his intended choice all along. Well, look at it this way. Waddell got his man!!

I would only entertain offers for that third pick if it included a 1st rounder and a 2nd/3rd rounder, or a young defender (as Tony C, Alan, and B Thenet mentioned) and a high pick. I’d also only drop to pick 6/7, as the strength lies within the first 8 players (in my opinion). Colin Wilson is the lowest I’d drop, and I think he’ll be a top 8 pick.
Brendan — Would you rather take one player (say Bogosian) or acquire a young talent (let’s say an Ian White type NHL talent) PLUS have the chance to still draft Pietrangelo or someone like Schenn or Wilson?? You’re getting a young defender currently under contract, PLUS the chance to still draft in the top 8. That’s hard to walk away from, especially if LA has yet to make their pick. If I were GM I’d be getting trade scenarios up until LA’s pick, and be weighing my options based on who is available. I prefer Bogosian, so if he’s still available I take him and consider my pick solid. But if he’s off the board, I might think about the offers made and ponder if it’s really worth waiting on Doughty’s development, or if it’s smarter to trade the pick for a young defender and going after Pietrangelo, Filatov, or Wilson a little later.
I’d argue a Shea Weber type player and a top 10 pick is greater than Doughty.
This is such a tough call, it’s one of those things ALL GMs must be respected for, as they have to entertain these infinite scenarios until June 21st. I’d love to take part in the preparation and draft experience from the War Room ONCE in my life.

Craig first off congrats. Second, there are rumors coming out of Russia that Ilya Nikulin is negotiating with the Thrashers to come over to the team for next year. I would give the article, but it is in russian and thought it pointless. Have you heard anything? Adding another top 4 defenseman would definitely not hurt.

For me, it comes down to this. I think I’ve got “can’t miss” guys in Doughty and Bogosian. I’m not dropping back in hopes that there’s still the same caliber of player at #5, #6, or #7, plus some guy who didn’t choose to be in my market, eyeballing the exit, counting down the months to his ESCAPE.
I would, instead, ask Los Angeles, “what do you want off my roster for the #2 overall pick.” L.A. would probably tell me that they’re not interested in any “short-sighted” quick-fix remedies when they’re looking at Doughty or Bogosian as the “correct” course of action for their long range future. I’d thank them for at least listening to my request. If the Kings start naming players on the Thrashers roster, I think I consult with my assistant GM, and any other “trusted voices,” to decide if there’s a trade that actually makes enough “sense” to really pursue. And, obviously we can’t possibly know who L.A. would want, and what other concessions they’d demand, including a bevy of draft picks and future considerations, etc. It might get to the point where we tell Kings that we’re no longer interested in their #2 overall pick, at that price.
For meee, and this is just meee, I don’t consider moving back in a draft unless my starting point is in the “high teens.” So yeah, I might move back to #24 from #19, to pick up #33, depending on what my needs are—and if I think there’ll be a serious erosion of quality (or not) for the player selected at #24 vs. #19. But I’m not interested, philosophically, in dropping back from #3. I count care if it should take 4 years to develop Doughty. He’d finally, finally be part of the solution to our defense. We’d own his rights for quite a while, under than scenario. Provided we don’t call him up, prematurely, for 10 games, and start the clock ticking on his RFA eligibility.

Best of luck, my friend. The Sporting News is a prestigious organization and I’m sure you will make them proud. Don’t forget to link your blog back here (or on Rawhide’s blog when you have a definitive URL.
On the subject at hand, personally I don’t see good value in trading the number 3 pick at this point, unless, like Bradon said, it is to go higher. Even then, unles you’re looking to get the #1 from TB (which they are NOT going to trade to a division rival), I pretty much see us picking one of the top two D available at three.

Congrats, CC, and best of luck to you. Smart career move that I think will prove beneficial to both parties.
As for trading the 3rd pick, I get really nervous thinking about D-Wadd trying to get clever on the deal-making front.
As it stands, if he takes either Bogosian or Doughty third, I don’t think anyone could argue with the choice, even if that player turns out to be a bust. With the information currently available, it would be a smart pick.
To that point, though, knowing nothing’s guaranteed, the prospect of getting a young d-man who’s already proven himself at the NHL level (a la the aforementioned Shea Weber), and a top-10 pick…well, that would be awfully tempting.
Especially if the Wadd (or whomever else is in charge at the time) could get a good indication/sense of commitment from the player that he was interested in being a top horse for the Thrashers and helping to build the team. Yeah, I hear you…fat chance.
As Tony C. said, I’d get really greedy when it comes to my pick.
For now, I say stick with the two picks and plan on developing those young players.

No MB… Facts are facts and reality is reality.
When someone in the public eye preforms either good or bad at his or her position, they are open for questions in regard to their preformance.
I see where he would be gunshy, but the fact of the matter is, don waddell is critized a lot on these blogs for HIS inability to get the job done with the Thrashers.
Since HE is the subject of the outcry, I believe we the fans, and the ones calling for his ouster, be afforded a responce from the man at the center of the outcry.
Craig, is, after all a reporter, he would be reportings facts, and his refusal to ask the tough questions, and that would be a tough one, just does not make sense, since the blogs for a long time have been 80% anit waddell, for his job preformance.

You’re right, LAC, D-Wadd is criticized a lot on these blogs, usually by the same 7-10 people, and most vehemently by the same 3 who repeat the same thing ad nauseum. Hardly an outcry (and before you jump down my throat, I, too, would like to see the man replaced).
With all due respect, the wording of the questions that you ask Craig to pose is, in most cases, exceedingly combative and phrased in a leading manner to get the answer you seek.
Instead of using those, CC usually asks pointed questions about the (under)performance of the team and how it met/varied from expectations, plans for the future, etc.
And while you may consider it a cop-out, remember that CC relies on the Wadd as a primary source of information. If you look back at CC’s work over the year, you’ll see that he does at questions that stem directly from conversations on this blog, though, again, not in the confrontational tone that you seem to prefer.

LAC — Schultz is the type of guy you’re looking for, with his no-holds-barred style of questioning. Due to that style, he (Schultz) is hated by the people he is reporting about. Custance’s style, while it might not be to your liking, is far more respectable in my opinion. He respects the individual who is making him money, but still gets the questions across that appeases MOST individuals seeking some more information.
I understand you don’t like Custance’s “ducking” of your question, but can you honestly say it’s nothing but a venting of your frustration towards Waddell (instead of an ethical journalistic question used in an effort to enlighten the masses)?
I think MB’s right on, you’re looking for something that Custance, or any other journalists who expect to keep open lines for future interviews, would not do.

Hey Craig The National Post has an article today that claims the Atlanta Thrashers are among 8 NHL teams that have had negotiations with Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie regarding ownership of the Thrashers.
Is anyone in the Thrashers organization willing to confirm they have had discussions with Balsillie? Is this report accurate?

Here is a link to the article for those who are interested
Unless it is Belkin, I find it hard to believe that a ownership group that is in the middle of a court battle would contact someone about possibly joining the ownership team.

B. Thenet That is a worrisome article to me. Having an ownership group with a dubious committment to developing a winning hockey club while operating in a softening economy….well, I just hope the team has some realy good years soon, both on the ice and in the revenue generating department. Which translates as “playoff wins.”

Fortunately for us, Atlanta is practically recession proof at the moment. This region is not getting hurt nearly as much with the slowing economy as other parts of the US.

btn is right. Atlanta is good on money for the time being. And yeah, I suspect Belkin is the one behind it, if that’s even true. The Canadian media has a sort of resentment towards teams in the southern US (aka: markets that shouldn’t have hockey), so I wouldn’t be surprised if it was just another unsourcd ad-lib.
Cynical, me? Surely not.

It’s official, NHL.com reporting that Torts is out in Tampa. Feaster opted not to renew him so he is officially on the market. Do the Thrashers show any interest??

Hi,I’m Seong-Ho,Yoon living in Jinhae City southkorea now.
AJC.com brave bulletin I can’t write from yesterday now.
Something fraude exist I sensed and I want to send messege to people of Atlanta Braves.
I didn’t meet and talk with any people of USA from past to now for important things.
I didn’t receive any money from people of USA. Keep in mind.
Babylon now can threathen my families and relatives freely. Keep in mind.
May the force of Messiah be with you
P.S:P.S: Below is my blog’s some article
Freemason
Theseday it is easy for you to read articles about freemason ruling whole world in the web. But, really speaking, this is trick of the most malevolent Babylonian living in korean peninsla for the purpose of imputating their sins to freemason and the original culprit are Baylonian whose language is korean.
And what is Freemason?
[18Century passport of Freemason]
The painting upper direction was in the passport of Freemason in 1785. Look presicely.
In top-most, the world Justice exist. God is Conscience and Justice sense.
In the below, Someone’s face is painted like Sun, and the middle of his forehead is wide, dark eyebrow, nose a little wider than the white, and you can find this face is something like Asian. Yeh Solomon, Osiris, Messiah,Lion’s face.
In the below again, Isis and another wife exist, and in center of both located Pheonix which means the guardian of Isis.
In the left side, Pyramid is and in right You can catch the flags of Judah’s 12tribe.
The sentence of script I can’t read for this word I don’t know well. ^*^
After all, this Freemason meant that people who didn’t forget Solomon and waited Osiris, and they were connected with Judah’s 12Kingdum. They knew so well about reality theeseday I am writting over the world.
[Article about Messiah]
And upper document someone wrote I think you need to contact, but never easily you could meet with them I think. But, they don’t know this fact “Allah is Messiah” and they would be people of Judah. The good people have to hand in hand with them, and you can’t trust people who don’t want to meet and help me, if they would avoid me they must be slave or descendant of not Judah but Israel. Person who can’t talk about Neutron and Resonance Schumann would be like witches and wizards who can’t tell “Voldmort” and you can’t trust them all and unbelievable. Originally Freemason pursuited the whole kinds of Justice about history, laws, economy, etc, and Freemason who chase Common Sense Babylon made must be slave or hyperjesus.
This Freemason was started to be fully attacked by Neutron from 1880’, so they caught the information about Neutron by intelligence office, they informed this secret to Judahs’ 12tribe’s Kingdums, World War1,2 were occurred by very this information You exactly have to know I think. Freemason informed the King of Japan and Japan invaded korean peninsla and southchina, but the insufficient information couldn’t defend themselves from implanting spy, therefore Implanted inslaved bosses of Japan attacked Hawai Island by the order from Babylonian who was living in north china and southafrica.
If Freemason would dislike the war about Babylon, that is proof of inslavery, because they were people who named Atomic Bomb to Neutron Clear Bomb. This fact the kings of Judah’s 12tribe couldn’t tell a nation for poor scientific knowledge, and they didn’t want to make nation to be horrified.
Mr.Obama is Freemason 32th degree I found article about him theseday. And he quit Jesus Religion. This fact is enormous hope to the good people in Asia around.
May The Bright Morning Star be with you Real Freemason ^*^
