Shaking things up for the Flames
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Don Waddell is shuffling up the lines a little bit for tonight’s game against Calgary. Slava Kozlov is going to skate with Bryan LIttle and Mark Recchi. Ilya Kovalchuk is going to be on the left side with Chris Thorburn and Bobby Holik. The second (or whatever number) line with the new guys remains the same.
I asked if this was a demotion for Kovalchuk, since I always viewed Kozlov playing in that spot as a demotion, but Waddell said his goal is to try and get balanced scoring during 5-on-5. I’ve always liked the idea of a two top scoring lines and a classic third checking line, and that certainly doesn’t exist now, but we’ll see how it goes tonight. At least they’re mixing something up, it’s not like the other lines were clicking.
I do like the Christensen, Armstrong and Perrin line - at least how they’re playing right now. I’m curious what you guys think - yesterday Don said he was content with how this team is set up at center for next season. Do you agree that a top three of White, Little and Christensen would work? Then maybe you bring in a free agent right winger and a couple high-priced defensemen. I get the feeling that the blueline will be rebuilt through a trade. If you look, the list of available free agent defensemen isn’t exactly that deep and it’s only going to get thinner as deals get done before July 1.
Joel Kwiatkowski wasn’t claimed off waivers, so he can be sent to Chicago if the Thrashers decide to call up someone else. They have two moves left - who would you call up with those two? I’m still waiting for Mark Popovic to get an extended look, but I think the team already has an idea of what he brings to the table. The Thrashers most successful stretch of the season came in the fall when he was getting regular minutes, but it doesn’t look like he’s part of the plans for the future. He’s an unrestricted free agent after the season and he’s kept a positive attitude through it all.
I spent a few minutes talking to him after practice yesterday, and you have to appreciate his attitude: “I’m a positive guy, I’m a good soldier, no matter what happens I’m going to be positive around the team. I’m here to get better every day whether or not I’m in the lineup. That’s the attitude I take, and I’ll do it with a smile on my face because hey, I’m playing hockey for a living.”
And he said that, despite the sporadic playing time, it’s been a good year for him: “The biggest thing is I know I can be a player in this league and I feel great. Hopefully I’ll get an opportunity in these last few weeks to prove to Atlanta and everyone else in this league that I belong in the top six on any team.”
But the fact of the matter is that the defense needs some new players. If you trade/waive Zhitnik, let Steve McCarthy and Mark Popovic walk, that gives you three slots to work with. If you can sign or trade for a legit top two guy and then add another top four guy, things might turn around. At least defensively.
Couple things of note tonight: Mark Recchi plays in game No. 1,400. That’s a heck of an accomplishment. And the players will be wearing the green St. Patrick’s Day jerseys in warmups to be auctioned off. I still think they should wear them during the game, just like the home whites they wore during the White Out. Oh wait.

I like to keep Liitle and Crush as 1 and 2 center. White need to go to 3-line. Slater will stay on 4-th. As of today I will see lines on future year as:
Kovy -Little-Slava (I hope that SOB start to work and play hockey)
Army -Crush -Perrin (Good line now and make Chemistry on Summer)
Recchi -White- Larsen (one year contract, he is not going anythere)
Boulton -Slater- Thorburn (this line works together also)
D-man???? I have no idea, about D-man. They are very bad in Atlanta. Popovic did not impres me alot, same is Kiwi. Zhit was very bad and he need to do something better. The idea to put Kovy in checking line, it was very stupid. It is not going to work. Are they going to play against first Calgary line???? Kovy is not a defensive forward. Well, really, it does not matter any more. Do you want to change line, Don? Go ahead do it. We are out of PO anyway.

For a team that has completely lacked in consistency from day one, two things stand out that have not changed at all:
1) goalies with groin injuries, and
2) a unique ability to allow shots, goals against, and powerplay goals while moving a variety of different defensemen in and out of position
The first you can’t do anything about. Goalies injure groin muscles. It’s as common to the roster spot as are bizarre superstitious rituals.
The second however reeks of a fundamental flaw. Either an administration that cannot evaluate defensive talent, or a defensive system that cannot properly utilize the talent provided, or some instrinsic combination of the two. Popovich can play in this league, just as Coburn can. The list of NHL-calibre defensemen who have joined the team to see their careers sag, and then mysterious are reborn once they leave, is long and somewhat illustrious.
Please, oh hockey gods, give us a coach that can teach proper positioning and special teams play, and understand the qualities of his player personnel, and player evaluation admins that can help the coach out by providing real talent. Is that too much to ask?

Perhaps the move to “spread around” the offense (what offense right?) will bear some fruit. Little & Rex are scrappy guys and perhaps a play-maker like Kozzy will find his niche setting up those two in the crease. And Kovy’s freelance style may fit well with the gritty Thorburn and Holik creating “space” for him to roam. They better get to the net though and be ready for centering passes when Kovy is double-teamed.
At least it will provide some intrigue other than how many times Exelby or McCarthy get out of position leading directly to a goal.

yesterday Don said he was content with how this team is set up at center for next season
Whoa, whoa, whoa. I thought just last Friday Waddell said at the Town Hall Meeting that they were going to bring in a top center to skate with Kovy (and two dmen). Now’s he’s content with where we’re at less than a week later? Huh?
Little or Christiansen can be the 2nd line center, White can be the checking center. Still need a top line center to skate with Kovy.
Either an administration that cannot evaluate defensive talent
Winner, winner, chicken dinner. Someone with more time on their hands than I blogged on here before that Waddell has drafted 27 dman, we have Enstrom to show for it (and a crap shoot 8th round pick at that).
Then, think about the unbelieveable revolving door of UFA dmen that Waddell has signed over his tenure-Tamer, Burt, Reardon, Smehlik, Slegr, Krupp, Modry, Klee, and on and on and on (plug in two more of the same ilk if they allow the same GM and his crack crew of 17 pros that he’s built make the same decisions this summer), it makes my head hurt just thinking about them all.
Gee, I think I know where the problem lies. Same guy that let Brunette walk, Staios walk, Kaberle walk, and on and on and on

re: centers - I like Little, EC, and Slater in that order, lines 2-4. White is tolerable but if either a)Esposito is actually the real goods and/or b)we somehow miraculously come up with Stamkos, White’s a goner in my book. If we could trade up for a better center than White, I wouldn’t complain, but I think massively upgrading the blueline must come first as well as making sure we fill Hossa’s spot on the wing either internally or free agency.

White’s a goner in my book
White’s signed for 3 more years, are you thinking we can trade him? Possibly someone might take him at that salary. But then we’d need a checking line center.
Only way this club is competitive next year is to bring in a top line center to skate with Kovy (and no, we have none on the roster or in the system and you can’t plug a 18yr old in there if we draft one).
Can someone confirm for me that just last week at the Town Hall that Waddell said he was bringing in a top center? I could swear my ticket rep gave me the same line (Don’s bringing in a top center and 2 dmen), but I tuned him out as soon as I heard “We had a meeting this morning and Don said…”

God help us if Kovy and Ex are on the ice at the same time tonite. Since Kovy is ostensibly playing on the “checking” line, then our first pairing will probably be on the ice more often than not when # 17 is out there. But if not, then you have a terrible defensive player getting very little support on the left side of the ice in the defensive zone. The result? Tap-in goals on the right post after Kari has to over-commit to the left side. And a mentally destroyed goaltender from Finland who sees imaginary monkeys dancing in the crease.

Wow this is a great plan. Balanced scoring with 11 games left. Maybe we could finnish 27th or even 26th in the league.
Don we have balanced scoring. Any of the other teams lines is capable of scoring at any minute. If you have 45 to 55 shots a game everyone gets a chance to score.

And you wonder why Hossa walked? The Thrashers lone goal scoring threat and one of the best in the NHL is now placed on a line with two offensively challenged players!
Kozlov was rewarded by playing with them Tuesday night and now Kovy?
Christensen should have the opportunity to center Kovy to see if anything develops with that pair for next year. I’m sure putting him with Holik will help cut costs just in case Kovy has a bonus that kicks in at 50 goals.
But the fact of the matter is that the defense needs some new players. If you trade/waive Zhitnik, let Steve McCarthy and Mark Popovic walk, that gives you three slots to work with.
If Havelid, Enstrom and Klee are the three you are speaking of, Craig, does that mean the guy who has been on the ice for 27 of the last 57 opponent goals allowed and who is a -16 in his last 18 games doesn’t get a roster spot next year?
Or, are you thinking about X as the seventh defenseman next year?
Either way, like his hair, he needs to be cut.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. I thought just last Friday Waddell said at the Town Hall Meeting that they were going to bring in a top center to skate with Kovy (and two dmen). Now’s he’s content with where we’re at less than a week later? Huh?
He’s “content” with lines the way they stand, but I’m sure he would be “elated” if he could bring in a true number 1 center in the offseason. It’s like being content with the girl you’re dating, but still hoping that just maybe the supermodel will show some interest. Just like my analogy, Waddell likely wont get what he wants and will have to remain content with our current centers.
Craig — I don’t like breaking up Kovalchuk and Little, as I’d love for them to develop some lasting chemistry…however, I do like Little being between the likes of Slava Kozlov and Mark Recchi. He’ll be learning many nuances of the game that will hopefully help him in the long run.
Also, I’d disagree about the depth of quality defenseman CURRENTLY slated to be UFAs (but you’re right, some if not many will re-sign by July 1). I think there are plenty of second pairing candidates avilable, and there are even a few (maybe two or three) top defensive pairing candidates available at this time. I think the upgrade could be done via Free Agency, if things fall in place. Two Tier II defensive acquisitions would be an upgrade defensively, and quickly improve the blue line.
It’s disappointing to hear Popovic has now qualified as a Group VI UFA. Having him for depth and in the long term would’ve been nice, I thought he was a fine 5/6 defenseman.
Sara — I agree, as of now Little is my penciled in #1 center for this club, I think he’s got the playmaking ability to pair with Kovalchuk for years to come. Esposito could easily be the #1A center if he lives up to his hype, and would eventually be the scoring threat at the pivot position that this team has missed since Savard. Until Esposito is ready, I’m fine with Christensen in the number 2 slot. White is a 3rd line center, and it’s about time he plays in that role…play him against the top lines if need be, he’s sound defensively.

Why are you people assuming these changes are in an effort to rectify the season?? He’s mixing and matching, and he knows (and you do too) that it doesn’t matter WHO he puts out there, or what line combinations they match up against the opponents.
FIRE WADDELL — Explain how changing the lines is “time buying nonsense”. I’m suuuure he’s going back to Levenson now saying “See, I changed the lines! That should justify another month of your leniency, right?”.

What Waddell said at the town hall meeting was said to sell season tix. I can not believe you people still listen to him. Do you remember the “I Guarantee we make the playoffs” (2006). Last year he traded away the future to make the playoffs to save his job after he made the 2006 guarantee. The reason he never hired a coach was so he could hire one this summer and say “we need to give the new coach some time with these players”.

Klee skated hard the other night against the Avs while Exelby stood and watched. For 4 of the 5 goals Ex was either on the passer or shooter.
I used to be a big fan of Exelby. I’m now of the opinion that he has quit completely on the team. I don’t want a guy without heart or character. Please package him up and send him away.

I love what Holik and Thorburn have been doing together. Ilya brings a more physical game than Kozlov, I think that is a line that might work.
Regarding the C situation: It is impossible to judge it right now without the Esposito factor. He is either going to be in the NHL, or back in juniors. I would wager he ends up making the team out of camp.
On the D side: I suspect the Thrashers will be leaning towards a defenseman at the top of the draft this year. Add one big time D in the offseason, add another via trade/UFA/RFA and perhaps let Valabik and the to be drafted rookie D battle for the other spot.
Craig, have you ever talked to DW about RFA offer sheets and what he thinks of them.
This UFA D class is not that deep this year, and I suspect that the Thrashers may attempt to sign a young RFA defenseman away from another team. We have plenty of cap room to pull off something like that…it all comes down to how many draft picks you are going to lose.

Ranallo 10, Bruce Afleck — Would you rather he sit on his thumb. Yes absolutely!!! It is what he has done in the past 10 years that has left us with a small old team that is dead last in the entire NHL in goals for and goals against. Yes I wish he would have sat on his thumb instead of trading for KT last year. Yes I wish he would have sat on his thumb instead of trading Coburn for someone to sit in the press box. YEP sitting on his thumb sounds good to me! Mixing and matching. You can mix and match 3rd line players with 3rd line players all you want but you will still get outshot and lose. Just take a look at the shots after the first period tonight and then think about the mixing and matching.

Fools — Read the rest of the statement before you have your conniption:
He’s mixing and matching, and he knows (and you do too) that it doesn’t matter WHO he puts out there, or what line combinations they match up against the opponents.
I’m implying that he’s just doing stuff to see if anything helps the teams problems at the present time. I never said “mixing and matching” will fix the problem. He’s at least TRYING something, as opposed to wallowing in self-pity and loathing the past mistakes he made.
He knows plenty of people (like you) will do the loathing and wallowing FOR HIM.

Bob I think White actually does have a very mobile contract. He’s not all that expensive. And I think EC makes a waaayyyy better checking line center than White does/would/could/ever will. I will admit I thought Tidy Whitey would work out better than he has. Mea culpa.
As for an 18 yo stepping in as a top-line center, by all accounts that’s exactly what Stamkos could do. Crosby did it. Malkin did it. Now I’m not sure if Espo could fill in that quickly on the top line - guess we’ll see. But between Espo and the possibilities of the draft this year we could potentially be set at center without making a single free agent signing at that position - at least within the next two years. And really that’s an awesome thing - more money for defensive free agent signings. Like Campbell or Redden, ya know guys under 30 that everybody’s actually heard of and any other team would consider a top line guy. Too bad Tampa signed Boyle - I would’ve loved to have sniped him.

Face it, ya’ll…at this point we can’t do any worse than to lose. Which we were doing anyway. I’ve said it a few million times, but I really think the 1st and 3rd lines weren’t working. (more the 1st — the 3rd was underperforming.) So I’m glad to see that they are being switched up, while the two working lines are largely the same.
Kozlov/Little/Recchi — if DW thinks Koz is ready, then I’d like to see it. Little is awesome, but he’s not quite top pairing material. This gives him a chance to mix it up with another bruiser and learn from a more subtle player. It also puts two physical players who know how to forecheck and backcheck up against the other team’s 1st line.
2nd line — if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Thorburn — Holik — Recchi. Glad to see it. Kovy has been having a lot of trouble penetrating the opposite team’s D. Holik and Thorburn, however, are very good at bashing the snot out of the opposing team (who will Holik sit on tonight? Will there be a Thorburn fight?) and hopefully giving Kovy space to do his thing. And if the Flames are playing a 4-line strategy, this is still not against their checking line.
4th — capable, steady, the same.
I hope that the power play squadron and D also get switched up a bit.

Only way this club is competitive next year is to bring in a top line center to skate with Kovy (and no, we have none on the roster or in the system and you can’t plug a 18yr old in there if we draft one).
YEP. SHOULDA DONE THE DEAL WITH SAN JOSE FOR MARLEAU.
Waddell likely wont get what he wants and will have to remain content with our current centers.

I’m implying that he’s just doing stuff to see if anything helps the teams problems at the present time.
UHH, A LITTLE LATE FOR THAT BUDDY! IF HE WANTS TO HELP THE TEAM, HE SHOULD DO THE NOBLE THING AND RESIGN. OR GET FIRED. EITHER WAY WORKS FOR ME.
He knows plenty of people (like you) will do the loathing and wallowing FOR HIM.

Nascar DAVE keep up the good work. ranallo 10 if you don’t want to read the posts here…um…don’t read them?
As far as the line shakeups are concerned, I’m pretty excited to see what magic Kovy can create with speedy, hard-working Thorburn in the mix. My knock on Holik has always been that he doesn’t work hard enough (probably the worst possible characteristic for a captain), but he’ll be completely out of the play if he doesn’t work hard tonight. Look for Thorburn to create turnovers, Kovy to get a little more space for shots, and Holik (if he hustles a little) to jam home some rebounds in front.
ps. Why shouldn’t Kovalchuk be captain?
pps. Fire Waddell. I like this shakeup but he’s still incompetent.

Buzilla, on the old blog you asked if NASCAR was really a sport, and i gotta say I would have asked that same question until I went to the race last weekend…I only went because they invited me as a member of the media (I am a college paper sports editor) and it was bad @$$, they let me ride in the pace car before the race with ex-driver Brett Bodine and it was awesome, we were going like 140 mph. And you really respect how fast those guys are driving when you see it live, it is quite the experience.

By ranollo 10: Now I get it. If DW does nothing we are better off.
Solid, when mocking a person you can’t even spell their name correctly. Well done.
Continually posting “FIRE WADDELL” is displaying abhorrence for Waddell. In place of loathing past mistakes (i.e., worrying about what happened last year, 2 years ago, or even two weeks ago) and “sitting on his thumb” (i.e., doing nothing to keep this team from continued poor performance), I say “at least he’s still trying.” He could have given up like half of the fan base have done, or he could keep trying.
Somehow I shouldn’t be surprised that you didn’t understand my point. I should know better than to use big words when talking to a person who watches cars drive in circles for a several hours. Oh yeah, occasionally they have to turn right when leaving the pits, or twice a year on “road courses”. Such skill…what a true “sport.”
I don’t waste time “defending” him, I’m wasting my time responding to infantile ranters like yourself. I’m tired of you, your caps lock, and your incessant “FIRE WADDELL”. You appeared on these boards when the team traded Hossa, and ever since then you’ve only complained about the team. Go back to obscurity, please.

Oh, and Popovic? I’ve liked his game since I saw him last year, no idea why they didn’t play him more this year, I think he should have been at least in our top 6 all year, he’s definitely better than McCarthy, Exelby and Zhitnik.
Better and younger. It’s just sad that a player capable of filliing the #5 or 6 d-man role is on a roster with the tremendous depth of quality veterans the Thrashers have on the blueline. Not only could Popovic fill the role, but he’s young enough he might have actually improved during the season…but with the years Ex, Klee, Zhitnik, and McCarthy have had it’s no wonder he has had trouble cracking the line-up.

Good, exciting game tonight. I’m a Thrasher fan and always will be, but I have to say Darren Elliot’s comments at the end were a little overboard. He was going on and on about how proud Thrasher fans should be of this team. Maybe he was just talking about the comeback tonight, but he came across to me to be talking about the entire season. If he was talking about just tonight…my bad. If he was talking about the season, come on DE, proud of a team that shows up about once every 10 games?

I don’t want to rub it in, but that had to hurt SEVERAL people on this board’s pride.
1 — Atlanta Thrashers were even with the Calgary Flames in shots. They were ahead after the second, and all the way until the last 2 minutes of the game. Not bad.
2 — Lehtonen won a game, and made some great saves to keep the team within reach. For once the offense made up for the defenses flaw (unfortunately Enstrom was to blame for the first two goals, as he gave the puck to Langkow and left Iginla in front for the deflection).
3 — Waddell’s new look lines actually seemed to work (though I highly doubt the success of Kovalchuk’s line will be long lived).
Tough one “fans”, but for those of us in attendance it was ONE HELL OF A GAME!!
Tonight is a prime example of why I (and many others) continue to pay for Thrashers games.
NASCARDave — I’ll take your word on the rogue post.
As for your question:
You keep complaining about the owners, but yet it is enablers like you that keep giving the your hard earned money!!!!
You’re right, I didn’t come to my ultimate conclusion of the ASG being the problem here in Atlanta until the Trade Deadline. My first warning was what’s-his-name who said they were determined to bring the Stanley Cup to Atlanta (the night the banner dropped). By then, they already had my season tickets paid in full, so the money was there’s to do with it what they wanted. My second warning was glancing at the available cap space after Rutherford (who names their child that?) made his preposterous claim…$6M in cap space, and they claim to be attempting to bring The Cup to Atlanta.
As for next season, they will not be getting my money. In fact, they wont be getting ANY money from me, I’ll be living in Europe. But what’s great about it is that I’ll STILL BE A FAN of the team, no matter if they own the team or not. I won’t give up as a fan simply because I’m unhappy with their performance.
Does that clarify it enough for you?
stendec — How is it that Lehtonen is to blame for all of Atlanta’s goals, but Calgary’s are due to “Calgary miscues”? Joseph wasn’t the person giving up juicy rebounds? He wasn’t allowing in “soft goals”? Explain it to me, please.
David — The production from that line made my jaw drop. I was glad to be eating crow for a game due to their production. I don’t mind being wrong when the Thrashers WIN.

Russ — Tonight was a great “feel good” game, but in no way makes up for this failure of a season (in my mind). I’m happy they won, and that they made an extremely exciting game out of it, but I would be 100% more excited had that game mattered in the scheme of things.
For the crap this team puts us fans through, nights like tonight are what make us stick around. It felt good to cheer aloud at the stadium, it was a good GAME.

SurlyT, you get the credit for predicting big things out of the Kovy-Holik-Tburn line. I have to admit, I didn’t think much would come of it.
Helluva fun game, and a right decent crowd for a Thursday night. I think there were a lot of SEC basketball fans stopping in to see their first hockey game, and a lot of ‘em weren’t used to being stopped from getting to their seats after play had started, and gave more guff than necessary to the ushers.
Nascar Dave, I thought if D-Wad raced cars he’d be called Dale Jr. Oh wait, that’s only if he never won but everybody liked him anyway.
That’ll be a shame if the team lets Popovic leave. I agree with others that the kids has the chance to develop into a solid third liner at low cost. It also worries me if that decision is being made before a new coach is brought in…shouldn’t that person have a rather large part in that type of decision (and please don’t tell me that’s already occurred, and the new coach’s name is McCrimmon).
Ahhhh, it was great to get rid of that ugly-a*******ed hat of mine tonight!

I just saw Curt Fraser on the Vancouver Canucks Intermission Interview. He talked about his experiences coaching in Belarus. He said he’s looking for a job here in North America next year. When Fraser was fired, Waddell’s parting comments were, “I still think Curt can coach again someday in this league.”
Well, if Waddell is left in charge, he very well may put his money where his mouth is … and it’s RIGHT BACK to Curt Fraser. Ummn, what PREVENTS him from doing that?
Bueller? Bueller?? Bueller????
Still thinking. You should be. The ASG relies EXCLUSIVELY on Waddell’s judgement on matters of roster and personnel, including coaches. If he wants Fraser back, that’s what he’ll get. And probably at a HUUUUUGE discount. Which, “business-minded” owners like the ASG, will surely like. Coaching situation … solved.
And what would you do … if you found out Curt Fraser would once again coach this team? Who would blame? The ASG?? Or Don Waddell? Do the ASG hire coaches?
Changing gears … GRRREAT game tonight. When was the last time Atlanta outscored an opponent 6-1 within the same game? What a blown opportunity for Cal-GARY to keep pace with Minnesota, Colorado and Vancouver. The only thing worse than blowing a 3-0 lead, is blowing it to the 14th place team in the Conference.
Darren Eliot actually said, “This game PROVES just how close, as opposed to being ‘far away,’ this club really is to some of its goals.”
See Darren, that’s where you “lose credibility” as an analyst. Truly. What does ONE GAME PROVE? Or two. Or three. Or four. Or even ten, over the course of an 82-game schedule. In 1980, in Lake Placid, NY, a team won one very MEMORABLE game. Could that team have won a “best-of-seven” series vs. that same opponent? No matter how “patriotic” you might be, if you are being objective, you know what the correct answer is.
I love games like tonight. I love comeback wins. I love hard-hitting, physical play. And the Thrashers are my team. Does this conscience-salvaging game “fix” the season we’ve all witnessed?
In the immortal words of John McEnroe, “You CANNOT be serious.” On second thought, I’m completely wrong. Let’s give Waddell a 3-year contract extension, based EXCLUSIVELY on this game. Seems right. Seems “fair.” Seems like the proper thing to do … in Bizarro World, where hamburgers eat people.
By David

I really think this team has the “capability” to play well. However, I sincerely believe one crucial mistake was made, and that’s firing Hartley. Hockey is a naturally streaky sport, and yes if you look at the end of last year and the beginning of this year, it was bad. I know, i hated it. But teams get swept in the playoffs all the time, and losing streaks happen. Where would Detroit be right now if they decided to fire their coach after that losing spell they just went through?
But that’s in the past. The FUTURE for this team is clear to me. Reshape in the summer, but do NOT completely redo it. This teamplays well when it plays with heart. That starts with your captain, who next year should be #17.

Brendan, I don’t think even someone as clueless as D-Wad would be dumb enough to hire Fraser back. Hiring someone with his losing record, that he had so little faith in that he fired him, makes no sense. At least Billy Martin could win for the Yankees when Steinbrener did the fire/hire/fire/hire thing. And I wouldn’t read too much into the comment “I still think Curt can coach again someday in this league.” Anytime a coach is fired in any sport, you never hear the statement “He was fired because he is a terrible coach that would be out of his league coaching Pee-Wee hockey”.

This is the first time in a month or so that we haven’t let someone come in and push us around. That is the difference from a playoff spot and going home at the end of the season. It was a great game, I was glad to be there. I don’t understand why they can’t play like that every night? Clearly Calgary is more talented (minus a very old and normal Cujo) but we played with such heart and fire, I loved it. Vandeermer was killing us, but we responded more than i’ve seen all year. I would love to have that guy as 6th Dman. Physical and smart. I’m not sure if Recchi getting fired up at Phenouf got us going or what happened but it was nice. And yes, this is what happens when you stop being pansies and start hitting folks and being physical, you stay competitive. Even if Atlanta had lost last night I wouldve been proud of them. That said, DW still needs to go. He should have them playing like that 78 out of 82 games, not 1 out of every 20. Happy St.Pattys Day, drink up.

GVH — If I remember the Haydar situation correctly, once a player clears the waiver process there is a window of time in which the player can be sent down to the minors. The player can also be kept up during that window.
I assume that means Kwiatkowski was eligible to play last night (since he cleared waivers), and will be able to be sent down to Chicago in the next day or so.
Craig might be able to answer that question, if he’s still reading this thread.
By Alan

Hokie - He can be sent down anytime in the next thirty days, if I recall correctly.
I think Waddell is really going to call up Valabik so we can get a look at him. The NHL is a lot faster than the AHL. So that will tell us where we are in his development, where he has to be to survive in the NHL, and what he needs to do in the offseason in order to qualify for a spot in the lineup. I’d really love to see him play next year, but only if he’s good enough for the NHL level.
By Nikita

Kiwi has to go down relatively soon, I think within 48 hours of clearing. He can be called up again, but would have to go through re-entry waivers — which DW might find worthwhile given that anyone who claimed him would still not be able to play him this season.
I’m not sure why Kiwi had to go through waivers, though — did he play more than 10 games with the THrash?

Kiwi has to go down relatively soon, I think within 48 hours of clearing.
I decided to look it up just to make sure. According to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, once a player has been placed on waivers and cleared, he can remain on an NHL roster for up to 30 days, and play no more than 10 games in that time. If he remains on the roster for more than 30 days and/or plays in more than 10 games, waivers will expire and he will have to clear again.

I think I figured out where Zhitnik was last night. He was in costume.

Even last night though, once they took the lead the hitting dropped off.
Let’s be fair, here. Exactly how long did Atlanta have the lead last night? I still saw some good hits last night after Holik’s blast to the back of the net. And Armstrong drawing a penalty against Huselias after knocking Iginla down really helped the team solidify a win.

You ever notice that Zhitnik is never around when Captain Planet is?… hmmm. :)

Nikita - No problem at all!
On another note, I wonder if the Kovalchuk-Holik-Thorburn line will be together tonight in Washington?

Nikita — Kwiatkowski has a one-way contract, which is why he needed to clear waivers.
I will not be surprised if Valabik gets called up for the last 8 games (thus not hitting the 9 game threshold for arbitration/RFA status).
Alan — By “Armstrong drawing the penalty” do you mean getting plastered from behind?? I wasn’t able to hear the penalty call, but getting two minutes for (I assume boarding) was lucky on Huselius’ part. Frustration penalty, but a stupid one none-the-less.
