Kovy: I’m 100 percent

On Super Tuesday, the candidates aren’t the only ones politicking. Ilya Kovalchuk is working Don Waddell hard to let him play tonight. Kovalchuk skated at the morning skate and looked great. Afterwards, he said he was 100 percent. If it was up to him, he’d be out there. He was planning on meeting with trainers after the practice, and ultimately doctors will have the final say. But after seeing Kovalchuk out there this morning and talking to him, I’m convinced he’ll be out there tonight.

Don Waddell said it was a game-time decision, but later in the interview said there isn’t a big difference if he plays tonight or Thursday considering the nature of the injury. Since he’s basically said Kovalchuk will play Thursday, then I’m having a hard time coming up with a reason why Kovalchuk should sit tonight.

In the middle of Waddell’s scrum, Kovalchuk emerged from the locker room into the hallway, and he was smiling and nodding his head towards Waddell, showing he was okay. Don’s reaction to Kovy? “Keep, walking. Keep, walking.” Waddell said Kovalchuk has been lobbying to get back in there since the injury happened.

Fins face off

We’ll see Kari Lehtonen and Antero Nittymaki tonight in goal in my favorite rivalry of goalies from Finland.

I asked Kari when the last time he beat Nittymaki and the best he could come up with was a tournament in Finland when he was 15. Kari hasn’t beaten Nittymaki on North American soil.

Marty Biron is coming off a shutout, but that didn’t matter. Here’s what coach John Stevens told Tim Panaccio of the Philadelphia Inquirer: “I looked at it as Atlanta seems to bring out the best in [Nittymaki’s] game. This allows Marty to get right back in net at home. Marty’s game is really sharp right now.”

More trade talk

I mentioned it in the comments section of yesterday’s blog, but Don Waddell told me yesterday that there was no trade talk at all between him and Montreal GM Bob Gainey during Waddell’s trip to Montreal.

“We never even talked about any kind of deal,” Waddell said. It was strictly a scouting assignment, which Don tends to do during Thrashers off days. It just happened that this one was in Montreal and the media up there was all over it.

That said, Waddell talked a little today about the possibility of a Hossa deal. Signing Marian is still the priority but he did say he’s getting calls from other teams, but for now he’s fending them off.

Here’s what he told me yesterday about those Hossa trade talks: “Teams will call, that’s as far as it’s gone. I won’t allow it to go any further. The No. 1 goal is to still sign him.”

This morning, he said the interest is coming more from the Western Conference than the East, which I thought was interesting although not surprising. And as we know, Hossa isn’t the only one drawing interest, although Don said he’d be real hesitant to deal a guy like Bobby Holik because this is his time of year.

If you haven’t noticed, Holik’s play has really picked up lately. Lehtonen was saying the same thing yesterday: “This is his third year he’s here, and every year it’s the same thing,” Lehtonen said. “He steps his game up so much after the New Year’s and I think he’s been great.”

Sweet, they really need Kovy. Kari needs to break his cherry against Nittymaki, I think he’s up to it. Then start Moose the next game, got to keep Kari fresh.

We have to win this game, it’s game 4 of the 4 game winning streak, remember?

I thought this was interesting. Forbes came out with its ranking of the NHL franchises

“The Washington Capitals, at $127 million, have the lowest franchise value, Forbes said. They are worth $1 million less than the Atlanta Thrashers.”

By GSU-Lee

Great news on Kovy, although the team was 2-0 without him and even managed four goals on Friday without him. Hey Craig, if you were the Atlanta GM, what would you want in return if you were shopping Marian Hossa?

By Smoothie

February 5, 2008 2:40 PM | Link to this

Let’s all hope DWad doesn’t play the role of buzzkill and goes against Doctor’s orders (assuming they say Kovy is okay to play) by sitting Kovy one more game to be cautious.

The Thrashers need all the help they can get against the Flyers and having Kovy back could really create a big-time spark for the team. I wouldn’t mind seeing Slater replace Charmin on the first line just to see what would happen…you know, play the hot hand like Waddell likes to do with his goalies!

I’ll give Charmin credit for finally finishing a goal-scoring oppty but when Slater is outstripping your goal production over a span of 4 games, then it’s time to step up your game and play like a 2nd line center at the very least!

By Jethro

February 5, 2008 2:50 PM | Link to this

If that Charmin feller could keep his stick on the ice more than his backside, he would score alot more goals.

GSU-Lee: For Hoss? Ideally I’d ask for a forward who can help this season, a top D-man prospect and a high draft pick. I’d even offer up a 24-hour window for the team to try and negotiate with Hossa, if that draft pick was a first-rounder. But that’s just me talking.

They jump the gun on just about everything these days and I would harly consider them a reliable source (unless it’s coming from Mort, John Clayton, Lenny P or Ric Bucher). Over/Under on Brier - 4.5 flops.

I keep waiting each game at the beginning of the broadcast to hear them say Hossa isn’t in the line-up, so you know the trade has went down. Although at this point I’d be surprised if it happens more than a week before the deadline. Which would mean we have at least two more weeks of guessing and worrying what might happen with Hoss.

Smoothie,

I didn’t see it on TV, here is the excerpt from the article on-line:

“He’s getting much better than he was before the weekend,” Waddell was quoted as telling local reporters in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I think our doctors would be more comfortable if [he didn’t play]. I think he’s out.”

Maybe CC is feeding ESPN bad info?

By Smoothie

I’m going out on a limb to say that Kovy will play tonite. If he was skating hard in practice and spent extra time on the ice without any real signs of discomfort, I think he’ll go because he’s such a gamer. It may require a team of BlueCrew girls to distract him from trying to force his way into the locker room before the game to put on his pads and skates. Let’s go Kovy!!!!!!!

By Russ

February 5, 2008 4:39 PM | Link to this

kracker - I think part of Holik’s effectiveness is related to the obstruction calls. Usually they start each season calling games very thightly and loosen up as the regular season progresses. By the time the playoffs start the standards are almost at pre-lockout levels. The NHL of course denies this, but if you buy this theory it favors a slow-skating physical player like Holik to do better as the season goes on. Just my two cents.

By kracker

February 5, 2008 5:25 PM | Link to this

Interesting Russ. If that is so, I hope they start letting Holik play more soon, he has gotten some cheap slashing calls the last two games.

Who is the biggest choke artist, Hossa or Lehtonen.

What a pathetic goal Lehtonen gives up to give them a 2-1 lead seconds after Ilya ties it up. Of course he will give us his usual excuses of bad luck, bad bounces, etc. It is losses like this that make me wonder if he will ever be a legit starter in the NHL.

Hossa screwed up several golden chances tonight.

By David

February 5, 2008 10:13 PM | Link to this

Lehtonen had a strong game, not sure what you’re talking about.

Getting outshot 36-25 is the issue.

Having said that, I actually thought this was a relatively strong game from the team. Sad that we gave up that last goal, but it was kind of a fluke the way it flipped over the net. If we play like that every game, we’ll win 9 out of 10 games. Everybody skated hard and acted like they cared about the points.

I will only cut him slack on one D++N tally. His whiff on an unscreened power play semi-shot which found the back of the net killed all Thrasher momentum. OUTINGS LIKE THIS CANNOT BE TOLERATED! These points can never be retrieved. I am so angry and disgusted! When the Thrashers miss the playoffs by one or two points they will re-live this debacle over and over and over again. Team captain Bobby Holik was right. Points not awarded for improvement or other meaningless crap but wins. AMEN! KL let all Thrasher fans down. IK missing open net in closing seconds did not help! By David

February 5, 2008 11:28 PM | Link to this

haha jethro

Focus on the reasons we lost, not just b*** and moaning.

Mistakes. Namely, penalties. You can’t make those kinds of mistakes against a team with that good of a PP and expect to win. That means more skating in the defensive zone. That also means trading Holik. Sorry. I’m a fan, but he’s just too slow now. Let’s trade him and see what we can get. Something fast, please.

Shots. Way too many times we don’t take shots and instead pull up and look for a pass. Put the puck on net!

BBB* — it’s so frustrating man. I want to LOVE Bobby Holik. I even thought about getting an Ivan Draga t-shirt that read “I must break you” just so I could affix a picture of his ugly mug to the front and tape the numbers ‘1’ ‘6’ to the back. But he continues to do more harm than good over time. He needs to lead by example and not by his mouth / wooden stick chops. I appreciate his candid remarks in the press but can we please retire the whole “we don’t take them seriously enough” spiel and just say “we need to learn how to play defense consistently for 60 mins / game”!!!

BTW, 16 is a great number and I wore it when I played HS baseball in Albany, NY. Not to mention B Mac of the Braves wears it and even a “true blue” Met fan like yourself can appreciate the exploits of McCann!

Well I have to give up my favorite Lehtonen rant thanks to that info Craig, that was one frustrating loss.

That 4th line has been outstanding since the All Star break. And overall a very solid effort by the Thrashers in a losing cause.

I would love to see the Thrashers pick up Ryder for a pick from Montreal if Hossa is dealt somewhere else. With how Samsonov and Recchi have played since being waived, I figure Ryder would be amped up just to get on the ice for the first couple of weeks with the Thrashers.

Hey Tony C,

What can I say, I keep an eye out for hockey players while I am out an about. I saw Holik at the Publix by the Lenox Mall. Its in the same shopping center as Target and Dick’s Sporting Goods. Kari I saw at the Kroger on Peachtree Industrial next to the Brookhaven Marta station. And I see a bunch of athletes when they stay at the Ritz Carlton in downtown atlanta

I think I am going to work for TMZ…accept nobody cares about hockey players

The rumors out of Montreal have now gained more steam, from a reporter who is very close to the Montreal GM. The new player being mentioned instead of Higgins is Chipchura…which makes some sense since he is projected to be a shutdown center similar to Holik who we will likely not re-sign this offseason.

I still hope we can get Ryder from Montreal as well in the deal, he should be able to fill part of the void from Hossa leaving.

I want to apologize for letting the team down on Tuesday. If I would have gone to Gorin’s/Great Wrap alley and got 2 to 3 big beers and cheered my a$$ off we would have won. Instead I let my errands get in the way of a 4 game winning streak and for that I am sorry. I won’t disappoint the team tonight. I am going to the game with about 10 friends tonight. Go Thrashers!!

B. Thenet… I had Chipchura in mind, but didn’t think Montreal would want to let him go… he would be a nice addition.
