Mixing things up in Philly
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Lots of changes tonight as the Thrashers try and get their first win. The first is in goal where Johan Hedberg will get the start in favor of Kari Lehtonen. Hedberg’s last action came in the third period of the Buffalo game and he lost his only start of the season in Tampa. In that one he faced 34 shots and made 29 saves.
Marian Hossa said he feels fine and is ready to go. He’ll skate with Eric Perrin and Slava Kozlov. That means Eric Boulton and Chris Thorburn sit (with Mark Popovic) like I figured yesterday. Bob Hartley is keeping the rookie line intact with Bryan Little centering Brett Sterling and Darren Haydar. I chatted with Haydar a minute today after the morning skate (while Sterling did a crossword next to us) and he’s excited about getting that first goal, but is determined to make sure it’s not his only NHL goal. Hartley likes the line, because he thinks the young players can play their game without worrying about setting up a superstar like Marian Hossa and Ilya Kovalchuk. Haydar pointed out that it’s also three guys fighting for jobs and playing time, so naturally it’s going to bring some energy to the team.
My only concern is that by sitting Eric Boulton and Chris Thorburn you lose some of your toughness. Who is going to stick up for guys like Slava Kozlov or Ilya Kovalchuk if some of the Flyers start taking liberties on the scorers? Kovy again?
Hartley said the team prefers not to keep three extras, so be ready for a roster move shortly. If not today, then within the next day or so. You figure they’ll want to keep the extra d-man (Popovic) around, and if Haydar keeps playing well on the all-rookie line… I guess that leaves Thorburn as the odd man out. I’ll have to look in my files somewhere, I’m not sure if Thorburn has a two-way deal or not. Or there could be a trade. As of this morning, Hartley said he wasn’t sure what direction the team would go.
What else… The defensive pairings were blown up, like I talked about yesterday. Hartley re-iterated that he’s looking for chemistry and communication between his defensemen. He was pretty blunt when talking about the Zhitnik-Havelid chemistry. There was none, he said.
Looks like Ilya Kovalchuk and Tobias Enstrom will be at the point for the first PP unit. I asked Kovalchuk if he was moving back to the point, and he said “we’ll see.” I told him we already knew, to which Slava Kozlov responded, “everybody knows.” So the secret is out. I know that’s where he prefers to play on the power play, so maybe he’s being rewarded for his outstanding play so far this season.
So Hartley is trying, you have to give him that. We’ll see how it plays out on the ice.

Time’s up for Skates Slater.
Either send him down to give Thorburn a chance and add a little size to the mix, or put him in some sort of deal.
Seems like a nice guy but he just doesn’t make anything happen on the ice.

Good. So is it White centering Kovy and DuPuis?
C’mon Moose, steal us one!

Yep! Kovy and Hoss on line #1. If the baby birds aren’t going to be worried about setting up a superstar then it stands to reason that you can play two superstars together as well. They’re all on equal ground.
We should see:
Kovy, White, Hoss
Haydar, Little, Sterling
Kozzie, Perrin, Dupuis
Slates, Holik, Thorburn
I think that would be a pretty great set to roll out with.

I have here in my hands (crinkle, crinkle, crinkle,) the October 15th edition of the “Sporting News” and on page 7, in their “On Deck” calendar segment for Tuesday, the 16th of October, they feature “Thrashers at Flyers (7 p.m., Versus).” It reads, “Last we saw Kari Lehtonen (see photo at right) he was riding the pine as the Southeast Division champs got jacked up in the first round of the playoffs. And if you have to ask which team Lehtonen plays for, well, you need more than a geography lesson, bub.” The caption of the photo reads, “Will Lehtonen be put on ice?”
Seems these guys had a pretty good indication over the weekend, when this edition was finalized, that Moose would play tonight’s game. Some secrets are not well kept. Then again, didn’t we all pretty much this coming? I’m looking forward to hearing the comments on Versus about the Thrashers.
That are the over/under in terms of minutes before they declare us “last place finishers” in our division? I’d love to prove them wrong!!

I don’t think we’ll see Kovalchuk and Hossa on the same line anytime soon. But then again, I didn’t foresee an 0-5 start either. This is how it’ll shape up tonight: Kovalchuk - White - Slater Kozlov - Perrin - Hossa Larsen - Holik - Dupuis Sterling - Little - Haydar

If there’s a trade, it would need to be a valuable player. Wonder if Haydar or even Slates is being showcased.

I’m glad to see Hartley has decided to change things. Hopefully we will find some sort of chemistry.
To follow up on my post yesterday, here are the stats from 1999 compared to this season.
1999: vs. NJ, DET, BUF, NYI TB Goals for: 13 Goals against: 20 Results: L-L-T-W-T
2007: vs. WAS, TB, OTT, BUF, NJ Goals for: 9 Goals against: 23 Results: L-L-L-L-L

Kovalchuk - White - Slater
Why does Waddell and Bob hate Kovy so? Nothing but plumbers and stone hands to play with all of these years.
Jaybird, I cannot believe I had more faith in the first year’s club to win a game. I mean really, does anyone really expect them to win tonight, unless Moose can stand on his head?

I agree with someone hating Kovy. This guy has had only one true talent to work with his career (Savard) and we saw what happened. Rocket Richard Trophy.
DW seems to prefer trying to find the diamond in the rough than getting a proven first line player. Since he drafts so poorly - this is an odd position to take.

I just want the team to win a freaking game already. Anybody else goin to the NYR game on Thursday? I don’t know why, but I feel like they will win that game. Maybe beating the Rangers, the team that sent the thrash down into this rut, will be the team that takes the Thrashers out of this rut.

I hate to say this but the only way management and coaching are going to change is:
1) Continue to lose, big
2) Continue to be outshot 2 to 1
3) Continue to have an ineffective PP and PK
In order to procure better management and coaching for the long term benefit of the team, the team must continue to tank in the short term.

Waddell’s strategy was to find great players who were undervalued with “upside” that came at a good price… ie. Kozlov and Savard (when we got them)… lately, it hasn’t worked out so well… ie. Rucchin and White.

What I’d like to see is Waddell make trade an established vet for a guy in a system who needs more ice time… for instance, my previous example of Havelid for Joe Pavelski… or someone like Ales Kotalik.

Hokie - I like what you are saying, but Kotalik is a winger which is not what we need more of right now. GaVaHokie made the suggestion of Malkin from Pit on Rawhide’s blog and I like that idea.

I’m not sure how to do links, but go to the AJC sports home page and it is right near the top of the page right now.
I don’t know if it’s just because it is almost time for me to go home and I’m feeling a little brain-dead from a boring day at work, but I was having to bite my lip to keep from cracking up and looking like a lunatic. If you look at it, look for a post from Glenn for a good suggestion on the team’s logo.

I never thought I’d be saying this but if the mantle fits I suppose that we as a sports city must wear it. With the Falcon’s performance so far this season, the Brave’s disappointing finish, the Thrasher’s losing streak, and the history of the Hawk’s it looks like we do qualify for the title of* “LOSER’S VILLE”.*

Poorly constructed team, no matter what changes Hartley’s tries. I truly feel bad for him, because he will not last much longer.
The ownership mess makes it more likely that Waddell will survive short-term, which is a shame - this team is his.
A 10-year run of: Remarkably bad drafting, poor free agent signings (average + trading though), and non-existent defensive play.
Get ready for a season to remember in year 11!

I don’t like the idea of Thorburn being the odd man out. Send down Slater. He’s worthless. At least Thorburn can kick someone’s @$$! While we’re at it, let’s send down Ken Klee and bring up Kwiatkowski or Valabik. Gotta keep Popovic in ATL. Rookie line looks very good, I hope it stays that way. Glad Moose gets the gig; Kari needs to sit on the bench a few games. Craig—I agree with you totally on the Boulton/ Thorborn scratches. We need some enforcers. You asked who would stick up for Kovy though—that would be Kovy. He’s a big boy now, I think he can hold his own.

The ugly truth is that, outside Kovy and Hossa, our player simply aren’t very good. We get beat off the puck all over the place. Slater, Perrin, White are all 4th line vets who barely belong in the NHL. Kozlov and Zhitnik are done. Ex is average and McCarthy was a lot better when he wasn’t playing. The rest are unproven rookies or grinders.

Thanks Don. I’m already looking forward to your absence next season. Anything to get me through the horror I see now. What an embarrassing mess. What are we? The Marlins? (That is, of course, w/o a world championship in our pocket) It’s as if the four months between our playoff embarrassment and opening night were a figment of my imagination. Wait, no major d-man or center signing after a division championship? Bargain hunting moves after your playoff roster got kneecapped? Wow, you’ve got me really excited to break that 0-9 record.

The Thrashers are two superstars, Kovy and Hossa, surrounded by 4th line players. Tell me who on the Thrashers would play on the 1st or 2nd line any where else, other than Kovy and Hossa…maybe Kozlov. Slater, Boulton, Perrin, White, Thorburn, Holik. I’ll leave the rooks alone. We’ve proven that “speed” can’t win without some basic physical play. They can’t stop the goals off of rebounds because they get pushed around. The NJ game was a perfect example and now Philly has figured out the same - shoot at the goalie and bang the sh*@#&$ out of them in the offensive zone for an easy put-back.
Glad I spent money on 4 tickets this year….

He has had incremental progress every year in the league with the Thrashers…

You go down by 3 and everyone stands around and watches. Mellanby may have been past his prime last year but by God you know he would have dropped gloves with anyone who would be willing and a few who wouldn’t.
Meanwhile Captain Holik skates around dropping his stick looking more than Pee Wee Herman than he sounds. Bobby, grow some cahones or whatever you call them and stand up for the team, or else someone cut that C off his chest and find someone willing to earn the Captain title.
What a bunch of pansy’s we are. And the worst of them are the owners letting this farce continue. I would tell both Bob H’s to find a new way home instead of taking the charter. Might build some character. The French John Wayne and Chech (less)Pee Wee Herman ride again.

I am going to pretend like tonights game never happened and post about something different.
I flew up to Boston for work Monday night and a family was in front of me. 3 kids, a mom, and a grandma. Turned out to be Metro’s family and they were moving up to Boston to join Glen.
Great family, and he was the type of player that I love.
His wife confirmed what I had already learned on this blog….that Hartley rode the S**t out of him and Simmer last year.
Which brings me to my point. F Hartley. This team needs a spark and a professional behind the bench. I am all in favor of giving the Wolves coach a shot, seeing what we can get from Hossa now (more value if he players a full year somewhere else) and coming to grips with the 5K I blew on tickets. The only way to save this team and hopefully season ticket holders for next year, is to show promise b/c that is all we can muster at this point.
And P.S. in order to get anything of value for Hossa we need a GM who can actually evaluate talent. Some of you made great points about not having any top 2 lines talent minus 17 and 18.

B.Thenet—I’ll get some new material when we get a new GM…Well, that is until our bumbling Donny opens his mouth to give me something else to work with…
Do you ever wonder why we don’t hear too much from our bumbling GM? He is very similar to former Falcons GM who was an equal buffoon: they generally avoided media contact and kept as low a profile as possible. Want to know why? (although I think the answer is obvious).
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool; whereas once talking all doubt is removed (as the old saying somewhat goes)…I also believe the ‘Peter Principle’ is in effect as well when it comes to Donny the former port-a-potty salesman…

Yep, and that’s why Waddell needs to be canned now (like he should’ve been years ago when it was obvious to us that know the game that he was incompetent).
It is utterly brutal to sit there and watch the Flyers forwards just skating whereever the heck they want to into, through, and all around our zone. Briere’s comments at the end of the 2nd should be paid attention to by the couple of dipsticks that were blind enough to try to defend Waddell. He said (paraphrasing) “all our forwards had to do was start skating and they couldn’t keep up with us”. And he’s talking about the small and speedy lineup that Don says he put together. That’s a hockey player, telling you what he and his teammates are doing on the ice, at will and toying with the lineup Waddell put out there. Just simply brutal.
Sterling trying to at least fight back a little a couple times was even more brutal, I truly felt sorry for the guy. Completely outsized and overmatched. At the end of the game, there was some pushing and shoving but I couldn’t tell which of our guys were in there, they were surrounded by these tall trees wearing black and red uniforms.
This is Don Waddell’s debacle. Coach Bob is just playing the roster (with 5 rookies) that he was given.
Yep. Ya can’t make s** shine.
Starting Thursday the Thrashers have 8 games in 17 days, the first one at home the next 7 on the road. Who thinks Bob Hartley is gone before the Thrashers get back to town?
For sure, hopefully it won’t take that long as usually a firing will light a short rocket that gets them playing well for 5 games, we need that quick to at least salvage some respectability. I mean if we continue down the toilet like this, no GM worth his salt is going to want to take this job and have to deal with this debacle.

Craig, I’ve got your next blog title for Thursday’s game:
Will Blueland become Booland?
And see if Schultz can get an interview with one of the owners and call them on the carpet as to what they’re going to do about the GM that’s built this debacle, as their paying customers who’ve laid out thousands for this mess would like to know.
The sooner Schultzie can get the dreaded vote of confidence out of one of the owners, the faster the process can move along.

Our right wing (Hossa) costs 7.0 million.
Our left wing (Kozlov) costs 3.3 million.
Our center (Perrin) costs .75 million.

The ownership group is clueless, I wish Ted Turner would fund my business or let me marry his daughter. The team sucks, stop going to the game and send a message they might get; stop buying tickets. If they are listening they will hold someone accountable; Don and Bob are done. Holik, Zhitnik, Klee, White must laugh themselves to sleep every night - they get paid to do this !

Even as my concerns about Waddell have grown exponentially in this young season, it sometimes appears that the boys go out to lunch early in the games and don’t come back. I don’t know that we can necessarily blame this on Don. Maybe they all just need some ADD medication.

Brown, Cammalleri and Kopitar all scored for the L.A. Kings in the shootout vs. the previously undefeated Minnesota Wild. Some of those names could be had for Hossa. The Kings came into tonight 1-5-0, the closest team to the Thrashers in the standings.
The Thrashers knew that October would be a difficult month, with so many road games. They knew, from last year, that a good October would be an essential step towards returning to the playoffs. Our “magic number” remains at 95, with 152-points still up for grabs. So, all we have to do now is win at a .625 clip from now ‘til the end of the season. No problem.
The Chinese Proverbs says, “The journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step.” Yes, well … that step has to start Thursday against the Rangers. That’s where this 10-game losing streak began.

The “midget value centers” (i.e. White & Perrin) aren’t working.
Put Thorburn in the line up and bring up some beef from Chicago (Bartovic, LaVallee, Stuart, Kiwi).
Put players in front of the net. Are the Thrashers the only team in the league that doesn’t screen the goalie?
Put some of the junk DW brought in over the summer on waivers, such as Klee.
The “where’s the beef” solution is in Chicago. The Wolves are bigger than the Thrashers.

So this is the longer-term impact of all those deadline trades last spring.
Time to panic? No,… panic won’t do any good. Serious, well thought out adjustments, must be tried though.
I see lots of potentially good ideas above.
Our previously reliable players are not playing well…Kozlov, Havelid, and Zitnik. Why?
Goaltending..a strength last year..looks more like it did two years ago. Why?
New blood…Give some other players a chance…they can’t do any worse,.eh?
There is an interesting article at: [text to be linked]http://slate.com/id/2175024/) Although it would never happen in the business that is the NHL…I see nothing that would provide more incentive and maybe fan interest.

yellowjax, this isn’t goaltending, it’s the guys in front of the goalie. The opposing forwards are wheeling at will in our zone, skating whereever and whenever they want. Our undersized D and midget forwards cannot handle them.
Hooky, great idea. I would actually prefer to watch our club be able to actually compete against AHL teams, and we’d get to pay AHL prices to do it, not fork out the large coin we are to watch this crap. It’s brutal watching this, at least we’d have a chance playing the Philthadelphia Phantoms.

Also, how about this two part question for a fan poll: When will the Thrashers get their first win and will Hartley be the coach for that game?
I’m guessing game 9 against Toronto will be the first win and Hartley will still be coaching at that time.

Bob’s right that the blame is more with the skaters than our goalies.
That said, we should offer Lehtonen and someone for a legit D man or a playmaking center like Kopitar (8 pts, 27 sog for the Kings.)
At this point it’d be best thing for all concerned to go with Moose and Pavelec and let Kari get his head together elsewhere…

Why are they waiting for the ‘PERFECT’ shot on the PP? It’s simple if you do not shoot the puck YOU are not going to score…I am getting sick and tired of out PP lines…do the boys watch film on the previous games. What goes on during the practices…obviously not enough hard work.
PK…Do the Thrashers have a plan besides letting the opponent score…what’s the deal with the large box! IT’S NOT WORKING!!!!
Why WON’T they hit someone? Holik got nailed last night…slow to get up…did he make them pay…NO! 6+ feet, 230 lbs, of what…
Every time we rush the offensive zone we dump the puck…sure you have dump sometimes but when you do it every time do you think the defense can counter it rather easily…just a thought!

Has anyone heard if there really is going to be a press conference?
Duloof, GA Dateline October 17, 2007 Don Waffle Press Conference
“I can’t work under these conditions anymore” said Trashers VP and General Manager, Don Waffle. “For the past 5 years, I’ve been subject to just too much darn pressure from the bloggers on the AARP web site. That Bob and assorted bloggers just won’t leave me alone and have been giving me sleepless nights and I just can’t take the pressure anymore, I mean look who they made me sign this past summer, it just can’t continue. I don’t know why they don’t appreciate what is AquaBlueland. We had scarves. We were giving away mittens this year. We had, had, we had, music! And videos!”
“So I’ve come here today to announce that the Atlanta Traveling Cheer Squad and myself are relegating ourselves to the SGHL, that’s the newly founded Southern Georgia Hockey League, and we are leaving at 2pm today in a caravan of 3 cars as our fine supporters from Ranallo World are coming along and we’re headed to Albany, GA where we hear there are many fine folks that will be more than happy to support us in the SGHL. Tickets will be sold for $100 each, for our inaugural game against the South Columbus Junior High Pee Wees. I’ve said all along that I felt we match up well against that club, especially size wise. I feel our speedy lineup can overcome the height difference they carry on us. We’ve already made arrangements for our goalie to be provided with a long term hair coloring specialist, Trudy at the corner of 5th and Elm, in the shed ‘round back, ring twice, that’s Trudy’s, your one stop shop for AquaBlueland Beauty’s and he’ll be appearing post game bartending at Joe’s Truck Stop Bar and Grill, that’s Joe’s, right off 85 at exit 32. Joe’s, where hockey goes, that’s Joes!

Havelid has been horrible for a long time now, he was horrible last year. I don’t know why everyone is just now noticing it. Seems everytime a goal was scored last year, Havelid was just standing next to the goal in the camera shot. Next, Hartley and Waddel are a horrible combination. But I’d have to say Hartley is the worst of the two. Sure he’s won a cup, but I’m beginning to think it was because of pure talent by his players. Even my girlfriend (who never watches hockey and doesn’t understand it) says it looks like the Thrashers have no plays and it looks like they just skate around like chickens with their head cut off. Not to mention there are no designed power play screens or setups. Just pass pass pass pass shoot. Harley and Don need to leave…soon.

Bob, I won’t argue that there are problems in front of the goal and will admit that horrible D play has resulted in some bad goals BUT you can’t let Moose and Kari off the hook that easy. It’s time that our keepers man up and steal a game. If Biron doesn’t have an “over the top” first period last night the entire outcome could be different. Some of our rookies still have question marks by their names but we know that our goalies a capable of much more.

Thrasher power play:
Puck shot into corner Passed up wall to Kozlov Passed to Hossa, one fake and then pass to Kozlov Pass to McCarthy on point Pass to other D on point Pass back to McCarthy Pass back to Kozlov Pass back to Hossa one fake and then pass to Kozlov Pass to McCarthy on point Pass to other D on point (if Kolvachuk a shot every three touches) Pass back to McCarthy Pass back to Kozlov
If at any time the defense gets bored with this, they step in and take the puck and clear it. Of course the safest place for the puck for the opposing team is in Kozlov’s hands during the power play.
So the defense is happy to stay in their box and allow the passing masturbatory game to continue.

Wow, this sucks. Thrashers have now lost 10 games in a row!!! Dating back to last years playoffs. Yesterday on 680 John Kincade said if the Thrash lose at Philly and at home against NY Rangers, Bob Hartley will be gone. Remember the last time Waddell coached the Thrash? Curt Fraser got fired, Waddell manned the bench, and the Thrashers went on a little win streak of sorts. I like Hartley (usually) but I think he’s gonna be the fall guy. Anyone got Ray Ferraro’s phone #? Maybe he can coach???

Way to improve power play: 1. Find player in the Thrashers organization with the largest a*.
Have player do special drills to improve hand-eye coordination.
Plant large assed, quick handed player IN FRONT OF THE #$@*& NET!
Shoot from perimeter and wait for rebounds, ala Holmstrom in Detroit.

The problem with this team is the formula, used by the GM, is flawed.
DW went shopping in the bargain bin for centers several years ago and found Savard. Since Savard worked well, DW thought he had the ability to pick bargain bin centers that were diamonds in the rough. Unfortunately, DW had just been exposed to something known as sampling error. This is the same principal as putting money in a slot machine and making money the first time so the person stays at the slot machine waiting for the next payout until he is broke. That is where this team is today.
So follow along and I’ll disclose the flawed formula. DW signs Savard for around 2.0 million and that works. Once Savard is gone, DW goes back to the bargain bin and picks up Rucchin for 2+ million, Kapanen, and Metro for less than 1 million. That doesn’t work.
This year DW picks up Todd Charmin White for 2+ million, Perrin, and Thorburn for less than 1 million. This doesn’t work either. In fact, the Thrashers are now broke.
DW failed to recognize he was lucky with the Savard choice, so he kept going back to the bargain bin picking up one new 2+ million center followed by several less than 1 million dollar centers each year.
Now, you would think DW would have learned from his mistake; but, obviously, he hasn’t.
Last year, during the playoff run, DW was forced to bring in a real center, Tkachuk. This worked, the Thrashers made the playoffs. Did DW learn what the team needs to be competitive from this experience? No. He went back to the same bargain bin center formula: one 2+ million center followed by two less than 1 million dollar centers.
So now our team is broke due to the same mistake being made over and over. DW doesn’t seem to learn from his mistakes. He just keeps using the same formula in the same way Hartley uses the same power play.
There is a term for this, incompetence. There is a way to address the problem, job termination.
Now, did anyone in their right mind think White and Perrin could replace Tkachuk and Belanger? If you said no, you are a candidate for a GM position.

Tkachuk (35) = $4M for two years Belanger (29) = $1.75M for three years
White (32) = $2.375M for four years Perrin (31) = $750K for two years
Comparing the lost and the gained, Waddell is clearly saving the team money. He grabbed two players at fine ages (35 and up is when you begin to be “old” in the NHL), at decent contracts.
I believe most people understood that production would be a step down after losing Keith Tkachuk. But to discount the money gained by signing White and Perrin is a little short sighted. Money is clearly important to this club.

Ranallo10 - DW may be saving money in the short run; but, in the long run, the team will not be making money when attendence drops off a cliff. So, if you save a dollar at the cost of making five dollars, you haven’t done very well. Listed below are figures and analysis from the other day. Had we replaced Tkachuk with Comrie and kept Belanger, the team would be in alot better shape. Unfortunately, DW hasn’t figured out how to alter his formula for inflation.
Mike Comrie is paid 3.375 million.
Eric Belanger is paid 1.75 million.
Total for these centers = 5.125 million.
Todd White is paid 2.1 million.
Eric Perrin is paid .75 million.
Total for these centers = 2.85 million.
The difference is 2.275 million.
At $58/seat, the 2.275 million would be cost neutral on seat sales alone (forget about the extra merchandise and concession sales) at 39,224 tickets for the entire season. Now just for kicks, divide 39,224 ticket sales into 41 home games and the result is 957 tickets per game.
Now, wouldn’t a winning team add an average of 957 tickets per game. You bet your a$$ it would.
The next question is how much will a losing team decrease tickets sales per game. We will soon find out. I bet the result will exceed 957 tickets per game.
That’s a double whammy!

Stroz, he’ll be gone at the end of this year, if justice is served, he’ll have to serve out his penance this year behind the bench, but I think he’ll wind up making McCrimmon the coach or bringing some AHL guy in and going back and hiding upstairs as it plays out.
It was good that the move was made today. This always lights a fire under a club for a 5 game stretch. I know, for the first time this year, fully expect the Thrash to win one tomorrow night and go on a good stretch here and play decent during this road trip.
But then the reality will set back in that this lineup just cannot compete over the long haul.
I really do hope they trade Hossa sooner rather than later, I think the return you can get for him now is better than what he’ll fetch at the trade deadline.
So long Hartley, it’s not all your fault, take heart in that. I know you can’t make s** shine.

LAC, Waddell won’t be fired yet. He’ll have to let it play out.
They won’t be able to bring a great coach in right now. No one is going to come in under a lame duck Waddell, since they know full well that he’ll be fired once the season is over. What date is our last game this year? The morning after is when they’ll announce Waddell’s firing, and they damn well better start putting the feelers out know.
The light at the end of this tunnel is that 1)the team will play better here over the next week or two (but then the reality of how weak this roster is will set in
2)Waddell will be fired, and then a real GM can come in and bring his coach in and we can get on with finally building a real team.

While I dont think any new coach can drastically change the defensive situation but I can only hope that the special teams will immprove under any new regime. Bring those stats up from the basement and we will start to see some W’s.

Randy Cunneyworth is the coach of the Buffalo Sabres’s AHL Affilate. He was up for the Ottawa Senators coaching job this past summer. If you are going to field a team of small, fast players, you need a coach who will be able to implement a system to use those players correctly.

Funny how the Coaching Staff link on the THRASHERS website goes to a “problem” screen when you try to access it, But the front office one and ownership has no such problem…
* Are They All THAT CLUELESS ???*

Anybody but Quinn, please. Anderson is a fine pick, but I don’t think the assistant coaches for this team should be kept around. Clean out all of the coaching staff, keep Ray Bear (conditioning coach), and fire almost everyone else. If those coaches stay and a new coach is hired there will be a faction in the locker room. Some players like Hartley, some players like Anderson, and some players don’t care. Get rid of the staff as soon as a coach is hired, or else promote from within.
Part of me will miss Hartley, but the other part will be happy to see what a new coaching system put in place with the current roster will yield. I’m hoping for steady line pairings, a dynamic powerplay, more aggressive defense, the works.
Sage — Where’d you go bud? Do you think this answers the questions you’ve been asking about why Waddell has been “silent” as of late? It seems now, after all is said and done, he’s been apparently pondering a coaching change once the situation got critical. I’m sure this was difficult for him, as Hartley and him have seemingly been a fine pairing since Bob was brought in.
Waddell is a class man, I doubt he enjoyed making this decision. I’m sure some will claim it’s his worry of job security, but don’t you think he has that every season? If a GM is making decisions based on NOT BEING FIRED, his decisions will be irrational and brash. A calculating GM will sit back, try to take things slowly, try not to overreact or react too quickly, and do what he feels is best for this team.
I know, I know, you think I’m a “Waddellite”, but in reality I’m a trusting person. I think Waddell is doing what he feels is best for the team, and I HOPE it is. If it isn’t, I expect to see him shown the door. Will I be remorseful of losing Waddell (if it happens)? No. Will I be disappointed that enough could not be done to get this city the ultimate goal. Yes. Will I sit back and throw scathing remarks towards a GM who has done HIS BEST to bring winning hockey to this franchise? Absolutely not.
But that’s just me. I hope Waddell’s decision can help propagate a turnaround for this season. I hope the team can rebound and get into playoff contention for that 8th spot. I realize it’s uphill, and it’s probably p** in the wind, but I’d rather hope for that than hope for the worst (which it appears most people are already doing so early in the season).
Ugh…today sucks

Hokie — Sutter is still GM in Calgary, he simply stepped down from the HC position before hiring Keenan.

Pat Quinn is the NHL’s Joe Torre
Take from that what you want.

Quinn would put a tough team on the ice that plays hard but they will be clueless when it comes to playing within a system and strategy. I’ll pass on that. I’m not sure who is available out there but I would be tempted to look for a talented young coach in the AHL ranks rather than go after a NHL retread.

Is Darryl Sutter available? If so, that would be my top choice. He’s a good coach and I think Atlanta would like the style of team he puts on the ice. His teams have always played a tough style of hockey with intense forechecking and skating.

Thanks Ranallo. I didn’t think Sutter was available. That would have been too good to be true.

I wish BH well. In professional sports winning is the sole bottom line. Players cannot be fired en mass. General managers do enough brown nosing behind scenes to keep jobs. Owners live in ivory towers. So when players fail to perform the coach is the turkey at Thanksgiving. Going from division title to 0-6 is tough to swallow. I know it bothered BH, too. I will always believe (Kari) cost BH his job. That is a personal thought. Other Thrashers did him harm as well. Hope fire-breathing coach ready to kick A++ takes over! Wish BH all the best. Thanks for our unforgettable championship season. For now. FOREVER!

I’m in LAC’s corner—now there’s a real fan…This organization doesn’t deserve such a good fan.
Don Waddell scapegoated the coach. I knew this day was coming—I said it even a year ago as he would look to save his sorry hide. He is the real cause of why we are pitiful.
If he was a man, he would have re-signed. He’s not. He’s nothing but a nasally coward who will NEVER get another GM gig—as his fraud is now well-documented.
Only in Atlanta is this incompetence accepted. How sad and pathetic.
