Hossa focused on season, not contract

I see the debate started last night, and continues today. What does Dany Heatley’s contract mean for Marian Hossa? Not much, said Hoss today after practice.

“He knows what’s right for him, so he did it,” Hossa said. “Good for him.”

And that was a sincere “Good for him,” not a sarcastic one. Sometimes it’s hard to pick up tone on the blog. But Hossa also said that the lines of communication remain open between the Thrashers and his camp. He’s spoken to Don Waddell and expects to do so again when the season starts. He said he has no issues with negotiating during the season and doesn’t foresee a time anywhere in the near future where he’ll shut down negotiations. He stressed that the contract isn’t his focus right now.

“Right now, my focus is on the beginning of the year,” he said.

From the Thrashers perspective, they have to be pretty pleased with the Heatley contract. While Hossa said that the two play different styles, he did admit that there would be comparisons made between the two players. I still think the Thrashers would jump at a 4-year deal in the $30 million range if Hoss was willing to do it. But he really doesn’t seem like he’s in a rush to get anything done. If I was a Thrashers fan, I’d be cautiously optimistic that the two sides will wrap things up before it becomes a big distraction. He did say he likes where this team is headed, so we’ll see. I’ve got a ton of preview stuff to turn in here, so I’ll keep this brief. But do you think the Heatley contract helps or hurts the Thrashers cause? Is there any concern to starting the season without him signed to an extension?

Hey Craig, I am one of those folks that is more than a little worried about Hossa. Want to see him stay, but if the beginning of the season doesn’t look good what incentive does he have for staying?

I also saw a posting on the nasty nest site that suggested if the beginning of the season went badly that Hartley could get shown the door, which could have a positive impact on Hossa re-signing with the Thrash.

Looking forward to tomorrow night.

To answer your question Craig, I think Heatley’s contract naturally helps set the market for Hossa, but I don’t believe it will be a negotiating point for Waddell (maybe for Hossa’s agent though).

Heatley is the most comparable player to Hossa who RECENTLY signed, and thus understandably would be a person to compare figures with. Thornton, Marleau, and Iginla all re-signed recently, but have different roles on their team than Hossa does for this team. Since two of the three play different positions also, I’d say they have less comparisons to Hossa as Heatley does.

The two reasons I don’t believe Waddell will use it as a negotiating point are:

1 — When Kovalchuk was in the process of re-signing a few years ago, Waddell said to the AJC that he does not use other contracts as a base from which to determine his own players worth. The example was the contract Rick Nash signed, which many figured would set Kovalchuk’s asking price. He said something along the lines of “other players are in different situations, which mandate the contract they feel the deserve, and ultimately agree to”.

2 — Heatley serves a different role on the roster than Hossa does, and is arguably less important to his team than Hossa. In other words, Hossa would make more money in Atlanta due to his veteran leadership role, than Heatley would IN ATLANTA. Hossa situation IN ATLANTA is different than Heatley’s IN OTTAWA. So therefore the only similarities between the two is position, playing style (which isn’t the same), and point production.

Puck — Yeah, if things are really ugly to start the season, I don’t think that would help the cause.

BH being shown the door would be a disaster. It would mean that we are floundering in the standings and have taken a giant step backwards.

Ungood.

It would mean bringing in a new coach,….whos out there??? A minor league coach trying to break into the bigs???

Ungood.

It would mean Hossa would be looking out to see who might be a good team to shop his talents to, and not looking to stay here.

Ungood.

The Thrashers HAVE to get off to a good start,…otherwise it will all be, well, UNGOOD!

GO THRASHERS!!!!

As I said in the other blog, I don’t think the Heatley contract really matters here because I think Don has already set his number higher than what Dany signed for (you have to bank on Hoss getting a raise). I’m ok with paying Hoss $8 mill on average, although I think it would behoove Don to front-load that contract in terms of actual cash outlays. My thinking there should become apparent in the next section.

I had an interesting thought (happens occassionally). From what has been said previously, apparently Hossa’s biggest issue is playing for a team that is a true Stanley Cup contender. If he thinks Atlanta might be that team, would he still ask for big money knowing that in order to keep together the talent that makes the Thrashers a contender would require lots of money all the way around? Kovy, Lehts, Slava - few more years and some of our other young guys are going to be headed into contract negotiations again. Therefore, if the team commits $8+ mill to Hossa for four or five years, then has to commit the same (or higher) to Kovy in another couple of years (contracts are overlapping at this point) - do we still have money for Kari/Pavelec, Little, Enstrom, etc etc as these guys (if as good as predicted) will be getting raises? We’ll still have Todd White’s contract to handle, plus Slava may need replacing. I guess bottom line is, a huge contract to Hossa could potentially handicap this team and end up undermining the goal he says he wants most. So is Hoss willing to put his money where his mouth is so to speak and take less to get a Cup (and that is a situation not unique simply to the Thrashers).

If Hossa wants the best of both worlds, it’s going to take a team with lots of young talent (read: cheaper players that still kick butt). Then you still have a competitive team with enough cap space to pay him well. I think we fit the bill there, but then again, so do some other teams.

As for the part about being nervous about entering the season without him under contract - can’t say as I am. It’s not an unusual situation and I think we have an opportunity to really sell Hossa on staying in Atlanta. If the team can work hard, be successful, that will go a looong way. And in the meantime, the rest of us can keep showin’ Hoss the hockey love to let him know how much we want him here (which certainly can’t hurt and ought to definitely help - everyone likes to be loved!)

Thought I would throw that out there.

I don’t see the Heatley signing having much of an impact on the Hossa situation. From my understanding, it’s not a matter of how much money Hossa can get. It is a matter of whether or not Hossa wants to stay here.

I think you’re exactly right, I really think Hossa wants to see what this team is going to look like before he considers a deal. I don’t think the money to sign him is going to be a problem with Holik’s 4 million definetely coming off the table at the end of the season.

I’m with Rawhide on this one. This dead horse about Hossa looking for a Cup contender is getting old and stinchy. He needs to look in the mirror first and figure out if it’s in him to contend for the Cup. Granted, it’s not just him, it’s also the goaltending, defense and allthat. But, if he’s not looking toward being a 3rd line winger and being paid accordingly, his destiny in his own hockey gloves.

By the way, Hartley did win the Cup. Hossa did not.

“He knows what’s right for him, so he did it,”

I think Hossa said it all right there. “what’s right for him

Heatley’s contract definitely sets the bar for Hoss and the team trying to sign him and Hoss’ agent will both use that contract as one to hold up for comparison.

What I’m reading between the lines from Hossa is that he’s saying it’s not right for him to sign anything now. I really think we’re going to see our last year out of Hoss, he wants to pick the team he plays for next year. I would guess he wouldn’t mind playing up in NY next year with his brother on the biggest stage.

The big question Waddell will have is does he just let Hoss walk next summer, or does he deal him at the deadline? I don’t see any way he just lets him walk. If he knows Hoss isn’t going to resign here, then he could deal him before the deadline if we’re struggling and he can get a great return. Given the right return, that might be the best thing for this club. He can’t let Heatley turn into a big nothing, have to get something out of that asset.

RANALLO & RUSS - Personally, I don’t wanna see it happen.

If for no other reason then the fact that it would mean the team was struggling.

Now, let’s put the whole subject to rest. It’s giving the the schpilkis.

Yep, especially seeing how we have young guys on the club now in need of molding. You know Anderson would have a million or so reasons to leave his minor league salary behind and absolutely jump at the chance.

Bob - but what does Waddell do if Hossa isn’t showing his hand? Right now, Hoss is playing middle of the road - he won’t commit to staying in Atlanta but he isn’t ruling it out. If he maintains that position, then how exactly is Don to know for sure what to do? Especially if this club is heading for a playoff berth come deadline time? At that point, he may have to run the risk of letting Hoss walk for nothing and you can’t reasonably blame him for that decision.

Midfield I definitely agree that Hossa’s apparent jabbering about wanting to be on a Cup contender is rather ironic given his own playoff history. I will submit, though, that I wouldn’t really say that Hartley has won a Cup - he was handed a ready-made successful (primarily veteran) team which already knew how to win on it’s own. That team also ultimately blew up in his face - hence the reason he is now here, instead of still there. I personally think Hartley still has a lot to prove - I see a lot of negatives in the way he manages a team. If this team implodes this season - I’m blaming him and I likely won’t be the only one.

But that’s all a moot point, because we aren’t going to implode, things will not be “ungood,” and Buccigross and Ecklund are going to look like idiots for picking us to finish 15th. :D

That’s Waddell’s job it to be a competent GM and make sure he hears from the player and/or the agent where they stand. You force the issue and put the contract on the table, if they still won’t sign and play cute, then you know he’s on the way out, and you move him.

The Armeggedon Scenario is keeping Hoss and letting him walk for no return. That would really kill this club. Hossa would bring a wealth of prospects/picks, mabye even an NHL player or two and prospects/picks. You can’t let that asset walk for nothing, can’t do it.

Congrats, zilla. Can’t wait to see it on the tron.

Rawhide — We know Hartley wont be here forever, so my sentiment is that unless Scotty Bowman is available as a GM/Coach when the inevitable happens, I’d pick John Anderson to be his successor (partially due to the knowledge that Bob alluded to, and partially due to what Russ said).

Sara — I agree, Hossa is clearly the person in power for this negotiations, and seemingly knows it.

Folks, you are all putting too much into this. Here are the FACTS. One, our team improves each year, so quit implying incompetance.Hossa’s value has now been basically set. It would be ridiculous to pay more than $7.5 or $8 as an avg.Kovy’s contract will be worth more in a couple years as he is cgracterized as a Franchise player. Crosby is at $8.7, that will be any reasonable ceiling. Waddell knows the sport, the business and asset management, that’s wht we still get better within a budget dictated by attendance. Hossa is a top line forward and will be offered accordingly, but with rational business parameters and he knows it. He might want to concentrate on actually producing in the playoffs this year.If he chooses to walk, we’ll be fine. I’d rather have him, but for the money we can get two excellent good players. We’ll be fine either way.

Bob — the Thrashers have exclusive rights to Marian Hossa until the beginning of the Free Agency period, July 1 (same date this year? is it always that date?).

I think that if Waddell finds he cannot sign Hossa to a contract he would have a chance to swap him for picks and/or players. That return may not be as great as it would be today or at the trade deadline, but it’s possible for the Thrashers to have Hossa for all of the ‘07-‘08 season, and still trade him for a substantial return. Until Hossa signs a contract for another team, it’s not out of the realm of possibility for the Thrashers to get nothing in return for his services (and Heatley’s by proxy).

I know what you’re saying, but I disagree with that. Yes, they could keep him until their season is over, but then you’re just trading negotiating rights for a month or two until the July 1st deadline. No one is going to give Waddell more than a 2nd round pick for that.

Look you know I don’t think Waddell is a Brian Burke, but I don’t think he’s completely incompetent and even I don’t doubt that Waddell will trade Hoss by the deadline, rather than risk losing him for nothing, if he knows Hossa isn’t going to resign here.

Same thing could’ve been said about Hartnell, Timonen, and Tkachuk. The first two were not locks to be signed by the acquiring team, but interestingly enough they were locked up within 24 hours of the trade (tampering? collusion?). Pitkanen was traded much in the same way (though he was a RFA).

I don’t think it’s outside of the realm of possibility for a player of Hossa’s caliber to fetch a first round pick AND THEN SOME, just for a team to have exclusive negotiating rights. I don’t think it’s something that will likely happen, but it’s possible. Just like it’s possible for him to re-sign tonight, and allow us fans the chance to euthanize this topic.

In case you’re wondering, I’m hoping for the latter of the two scenarios to come to fruition.

I know we’re trying to put this topic to bed, and I’m late getting here.

1) You are free to boo whomever you choose, whenever you want. Furthermore, you’re entitled to those “feelings.” You feel how you FEEL about things. No one can tell you how to feel about things. That’s your call, exclusively. If you surrender that right, you give up your free will. And why would you do that?

2) You have the right to “scoff” those who do boo players. Again, that’s you “feeling the way you do” about things. 3) Know that scoffing at them does not make you “better” or “special,” and if you think it does, consult your local yellow pages for Therapists. There might even be a coupon. And say “hello” to the GEICO caveman while you’re there.

Next, Hossa’s contract. I think the market is being somewhat set with the Heatley deal. But if Hossa remains unsigned on July 1, 2008, that’s when the “new price structure” comes into effect. We won’t know what the new “cap figures” will be until just after the June Draft, 2008. I suspect THAT, (that is, the new cap figure,) above all, will help shape the market in setting the value*.

If Hossa walks for nothing, it will be disappointing. But like Sara said, if we’re on the bubble, who can blame Waddell for riding what is likely to be his best horse towards the playoffs? But there’s more. Does Waddell want to be remembered for trading away Marian Hossa? Look, I’ll tell ya right now. I’ll give him a pass if it goes down like (original poster) Bob said. Namely, that DW threw offer after offer of a new contract at Hossa, all throughout the season—which was met with a declination each time. At that point, it seems pretty clear that Hossa isn’t going to re-sign before July 1, 2008. He’s going to test the waters. Well, Don Waddell has to make a calculated decision at the trade deadline. If the team is tanking, can he really risk not moving Hossa? No. But he can hold out for and ask the most desperate team (at the trade deadline) to cough up “conditional” 1st and 2nd round picks if Hossa re-signs with that club. At least this way, Waddell still has “some shot” at re-signing Hossa AFTER July 1st, by “renting” him out. (Think Keith Tkachuk, if that helps.) But remember, Hossa will be unrestricted. So, just because there are Thrashers liens over the rental team doesn’t mean Hossa will re-sign with Atlanta. It just means it’s less likely that the “rental team” will re-sign him.

Now, if the team is humming right along at the trade deadline, Waddell NEEDS Hossa to complete the run. He can’t trade him. He’ll have to eat the risk. And he’s got all sorts of “excuses” if Hossa is lost to Free Agency later on in the Summer.

Excuse #1: “I offered him deal after deal, but he always declined.” Excuse #2: “I never heard any trade offer that made any kind of sense for us.” Excuse #3: “Marian Hossa said he wanted to test the waters of free agency and told me he’d consider re-signing with us. His agent never returned my phone calls. Hossa wanted to leave. Trading him in the middle of our stretch-run for the playoffs and division title didn’t make any sense for our organization. We were counting on Hossa to lead us deep into the playoffs. Trading him was never on my mind.”

Actually, those are valid excuses. Not to mention that, Waddell gets to say, “I didn’t trade him, he left of his own accord, after I offered him more than $30 million. He (Hossa) held all the cards on the contract negotiations.”

Okay, flame away.

Good to hear from ya, Brendan. No idea why they didn’t make you the fan blogger, but I always appreciate your keen insight.

Great preview article, Craig. So now we know Hartley’s in his last year of his contract. And from the sounds of it, Waddell’s head is on the block also. And rightly so, as you point out, no GM in a hockey town, even in a Nashville, would survive after Waddell’s track record.

Nice quote from Hoss also, he’s saying he likes what he’s seeing. This is a key year all around, I think Waddell is right, if this team can be 8-6 or so after they finish that road trip, they’re looking good.

I was also going to add, I watched the Philly game a little bit last night. Although I am glad we have Zhitnik, Coburn got a lot of playing time last night. Although they went out and got Jason Smith and made him their C and still have Hatcher, I think they are going to try to make Coburn a #2. They gave him some decent time on the PK and a bit on the PP 2nd unit as well from what I saw. Again, I am glad we have Zhitnik (not to mention all the other guys we have coming up in that position), but it is interesting to see what happens to these guys after they leave here (a la Bouret).

Buzz… not to twist the knife, but why the hell did you call? tsk tsk

When you’re getting something free, Customer Service doesn’t apply to you anymore… you would have known for sure on Monday, and you would have had 3 days to order Center Ice if it was cut off.

And you want to be my stock broker? :) I can still have your tickets for tonight, right? :)

Bob - I am hoping that next year’s formula will be Enstrom ^ Valabik V Enstrom ^ Popovic > Coburn

By Brendan

Buzilla, Yikes dude. I will play it by ear. But if I do wind up paying for it, I will be adamant about the $20 discount that they are advertising. How much is Center Ice? Is it $169? $149, with the discount?

In mid-December, they usually run a “discount” price between $119 - $129.00 for Center Ice on Comcast.

Also, I notice something “new” this year. But it’s something that Direct TV and Dishnet had all along. There’s now a channel where you can see multiple games on the same screen. Of course, there’s that “Command Center” channel that gives your a rundown of all games in progress, as well as “Standings” and “Scoring race” type summaries. Also, there are MORE channels. It goes from 771-784, as opposed to 460-469. Last year, I found, not all games were shown. And, of course, when the Thrashers are on local TV, they are not on Center Ice. They expect you to watch it on the local channel.

Another difference, I notice, is that Comcast doesn’t give you any choice over which broadcast team coverage you want, whereas, Dishnetwork and DirectTV do. Say the Islanders are facing the Bruins. And you want NESN’s coverage of the game, because … well … Intermission host Hazel Mae is just such a “babe.” But, let’s say you’re a Thrashers fan who still likes Billy Jaffe. So, you want the Islanders coverage of the game. Or, let’s just say you have the “hots” for Deb Kaufmann. So, you want the Islanders broadcast crew. On Comcast, you don’t get the choice. It’s whatever Comcast provides. You may be stuck with NESN coverage of that game. Though, c’mon. Is anyone really “stuck” with Hazel Mae??

Chime in, you “Dishnetwork” and “DirecTV” Center Ice subscribers.

GaValcholic -

You expect me to give up my tickets after busting my sack? Your crazy West Virgina. You and Jay are gonna have to go up to the rafters in the $10 special seats!!!

Brendan -

I can’t stand watching Deb Kaufmann. I think she had a stroke or something. She only talks out of one half of her face. She looks like Mary Jo Buttafucco if she was a sports anchor.

….got I miss Erin. Remember her? Man she was hot. Bad nose, but great rack (sorry if any kids are reading this…but she does)

So you stalk her…

I don’t blame you

By Brian

October 5, 2007 1:06 PM | Link to this

Brendan - you had some interesting comments. I have only been a Directv subscriber, so I can’t compare it against other providers. But I have only been able to watch it under one broadcast team. For example, if the Bruins were playing the Rangers, they may pick MSG. The game will be on the Center Ice channel (704 or something higher depending on the # of games) and MSG on 620 (I think). But if I turn on NESN it will say game blacked out. This kills me during Sabre games when I can’t here Jeanneret.

As for those additonal standings and whatnot, I didn’t have those options for the Flames/Flyers game last night. But I got the Sunday Ticket package this year (didn’t last year). I was surprised how much they increased the price. But it had some awesome options like in game stats, scoring summaries, etc. So for whatever reason I can do that with football but not hockey.

Buzilla, I simply must have your opinion of Amanda Jahn, a former Intermission host. She is, believe it or not, married to former Thrashers goaltender Damian Rhodes.

Lest they have separated.

Deb Kaufmann does tend to speak out of one side of her mouth, literally. Not the “figure of speech.” But she’s not an unattractive woman. Though, can I say, objectively, that she occassionally appears “star stuck” by Trent Hunter and other members of the Islanders, during interviews? Well, I just did.

Hmmn, maybe it’s time for an “Intermission babe” poll for Center Ice subscribers. Who’s that L.A. Kings intermission chick?

Ahh, Erin Andrews. I can almost hear her saying 1-0, “one, nuthin.” She was a cutie. And yes, Buzilla, her endowment rivals Harvard’s.

Hossa and Kozlov continued their strong play from the Rangers series.

Nice to see Lehtonen give up a goal from the blueline when we were down by one, that kid is clutch.

Little and Enstrom made the night tolerable.

By bob

October 5, 2007 11:58 PM | Link to this

It’s only one game. We’ll be ok. The Hossa line looked invisible and Kari was real sharp. Ultimately cement in our skates on that line and average goaltending cost us. Ilya and little both looked solid as did Enstrom.

By Rawhide

October 5, 2007 11:58 PM | Link to this

TONY C - Yup, I was there,…with the jersey, (didn’t help…)

Saw CM, spoke with Brian,….that was good!

Everyting else,…pretty much ungood.

We were chasing Caps all night,……couldn’t clear the puck,….couldn’t get any transition game going,…pucks being passed to open patches of ice,…..giving up, what, 40 shots?

Ungood.

Now, I do hope we saw the first of many goals by Little.

I’m sure the sharper knives in the drawer can break it down in finer detail,….but that was my observation.

By R. Stroz

October 6, 2007 12:30 AM | Link to this

Observations:

Negatives:

Todd White was, once again, horrible. For the love of hockey, can we procure a center that isn’t a whimp. I’m ready to move Little up to the Kovy line. Todd White is about as useful as Kapanen, but White costs more money. I started laughing when I heard other fans calling White by my nickname for him, Charmin.

Once again the Thrashers gave up over 35 shots on goal. No team can win doing that.

The Holik, Kozlov, Hossa line looked like they had weights in their skates. Holik is not the right center for Kozlov and Hossa. He is just too slow.

Something positive:

Enstrom made one of the best plays I’ve ever seen. After one of the Caps had jumped out of the penalty box, Enstrom slapped down a pass, which was a sure fire break away.

Little and Sterling were hustling.

Needs:

We have to find a forward with some size, speed, and grit. I don’t think LaVallee will be in Chicago much longer.

White is signed for 4 years, fellas. 4

I got to the game early, before they came out for warmups. When they came out, I was shocked how small we are. Really. I mean we are small. We got pushed off the puck all night by a bad Crapitols club.

That’s one game, but I am really shocked how small we are. Did I say how shocked I am how small we are? White’s softer than advertised. There’s not much here to work with fellas.

By Bob

October 6, 2007 12:50 AM | Link to this

Holik is not the right center for Kozlov and Hossa. He is just too slow

Stroz, it was painful watching that line, Holik is such a bad fit there.

That is definitely not going to work as a combination. The only spot Holik is effective is on the checking line.

If anything, put White on Hossa and Kozlov’s line and then whoever on Kovy’s line. Kovy must be so sick of this s**, no linemates again.

By Thrashers27

October 6, 2007 1:28 AM | Link to this

Anybody else notice that Sterling disappeared in the third? He wasn’t playing very well. Little took his place. Hopefully, White was just a tad nervous. Kari looked great, Kovy looked good, but I thought that Hoss and Kozzie looked like crap most of the night. I like Perrin’s hustle. He and Doopooie created several turnovers and good scoring chances tonight.

Better luck in Tampa, boys. Go get ‘em!

By R. Stroz

October 6, 2007 2:01 AM | Link to this

Ok, I know it was the first real game; but, those line combinations aren’t going to work.

Change up the lines by mixing size speed, and skill:

Line 1) Kovy=RW, Little=C, Kozlov=LW

Line 2) Bartovic=RW, White or Perrin=C, Hossa=LW (Yes, I know Bartovic is in Chicago, but bring him up before he goes back to Europe. Hossa has played on the same line with Bartovic in international games and they worked together well in preseason)

Line 3) Slater=RW, Thorburn=C, Sterling=LW

Line 4) Bolts or Larsen=RW, Holik=C, Dupuis=LW

I know we’re spending too much money for Holik to be a checking line center; but, sunk costs are sunk. You cannot turn a camal into a cheetah.

Also, if Todd White is 5’10”, I have a full head of hair.

Ok guys rip away!

By R. Stroz

October 6, 2007 2:14 AM | Link to this

Oops, mistake on Line 2)

Change to:

Hossa=RW and Bartovic=LW

My guess is Hossa may have had something to do with Bartovic being brought over to begin with.

B. Thenet & R. Stroz kinda already covered it for me. I noticed that by period 2 Little was skating with Kovy, I hope that is a sign of things to come. I don’t know about Kovy with 2 rooks but if the Hossa line can pick up it’s share, it wouldn’t matter.

Ok, I know I got hit in the head a few times with the puck when I was younger, but not only did I figure out the difference between Cuban Zarconias and Cubic Zirconias, but I now see the difference between Bob & bob

The years may roll by but some things never change: our woeful defense.

Looking forward to the pathetic excuses by the Waddellites this year!

(Ooops, I forgot—it’s ALL Hartley’s fault…Well, there’s the gold-plated ‘Excuse No. 1’…Real fans should know better…Not expecting much, here, of course…)

As I watched the replay, Darren Eliot said Holik’s footspeed wouldn’t be an issue for the Hossa, Holik, Kozlov line, because, Eliot said, “Hossa and Kozlov would adjust and play positionally.” Or words to that effect. Eliot added, “it will be a good line.” That last one is an exact quote.

Okay.

Moving right along … Kovy, White and Sterling didn’t make a big impact. I think White was in the box when the Caps scored on their very first power play attempt of the season. Boulton, Slater and Larsen were invisible. Our best line was Dupuis (very speedy, excellent on the PK,) Little (scored a goal), and Perrin. Perrin actually looked okay. I’m a little concerned that Perrin is not a “finisher.” Reminds me of Slater a bit, in that regard.

Our best players last night were, in no particular order, Enstrom, Lehtonen, Dupuis, Little and Kovalchuk. Hossa had one good look, but the puck wouldn’t lie flat for him. Congrats to Little for getting a goal in his very 1st NHL game. It wasn’t pretty, but it was a much needed goal, cutting the score in half, 2-1.

Once again, the Thrashers gave up well in excess of 30 shots. And truthfully, even “Stendec” might advance that Kari kept us in it last night. Yes, yes. The 2nd goal was “weak.” What was that final shot total again?? Kari was saving our butts for most of the night.

The D-pairings were Havelid and Zhitnik, with Zhitnik getting some PP minutes, along with Enstrom. I’ll keep saying it, McCarthy was on the PP last year, when our PP was smokin’. Put him back!! The next pairing was Exelby and Klee, who didn’t have a good night. Klee and “X” were on the ice for the first two Capitals goals. The last pairing was Enstrom and McCarthy. I didn’t think they were bad at all. I was completely surprized by this kid, Enstrom. Looked great on the PP. I thought Enstrom played very, very well.

Okay, this makes five (5) straight losses, from the playoffs last year. But it’s just one game in an 82-game season. But, we do look small out there. Let’s get Tampa!!

I don’t want this to turn somber, but 10 of the next 13 are on the road. So, we really needed to get some points vs. a team like the Capitals. The home games we do get this month are far from “softies.”

With the exception of Kovy and Little I was not impressed. Little should center Kovy or Hossa line. I think it is pretty clear why White was signed as cheap as he was. Same old story with shots on goal. Same old story with the pp!

Brendan, “X” was actually on the ice for all 3 goals since he was out on the Penalty Kill unit when it scored. His immense popularity here would dwindle if more people would start to notice how often his big hits lead to goals against. Just start watching how often he has chased someone over in a corner or behind the net when a goal is scored. If he was in position (in front of the net) our chances would improve.

Rawhide you are correct, White looked like a new bride trying to cook a first dinner, it was NOT happening… And I see Commrie scored two tonight, could have him for about the same $$$.

Holik slow as always, But why was the offense not able to click ?

We were basically one shot and out.

I felt we were even outskated by Washington, and we WERE pushed around… A LOT !!!!

We need at least one BIGGER forward and ,maybe Boris from Chicago, he CAN kick peoples a*, would rather have him than a couple of the “veteran” defensemen for sure… # 28 is a shadow of his first year here… not much more…

Only one game, but we need a strong effort tonight or we could be headed in the WRONG direction…

Kari was EXCELLENT last night, could have been 10-1 if not for some EXCELLENT point blank shots.

Just looking at some stats. Over the last 19 games, Hossa is MINUS (-5) with 4 goals. By contrast, Kovy is PLUS (+6) with 8 goals. Hopefully the Hossa trend does not continue, but it is time for him to start showing up again. For $7M a year…. key players must play that way….Ilya is, Marion unfortunately is not. Let’s hope our TEAM gets it going starting tonight.

Brendan’s right. Put McCarthy back on the PP. Zhitnik had a lousy night and our PP continues to look for the pass instead of taking the shot and looking for a possible rebound. Anybody else notice that we NEVER had anyone in the crease waiting for/screening a shot on the PP? And of course our plan on the PP was the usual dump and run. How come no other team in the NHL uses that outstanding strategy? Is that the crapola Bob used to win in Colorado? They why are we still using it five years later? Why can’t we BRING it into the offensive zone, rotate on the PP like real teams do, shoot the flippin’ biscuit at the pipes and maybe even score sometimes on the PP? I liked what I saw in Little, Enstrom played well but I was surprised he got the 3rd star, and the PK on the two 5-on-3s was pretty nice to watch. Holik must be moved down to the 3rd line as he’s slower than my grandmother and she’s been dead for 30 years, and we STILL need a center…hopefully Kovy will stay paired with Little, but Hossa/Kozzy need a third to party with. Sigh, Don and Bernie know it but the friggin’ Spirit won’t pay for it. Our D continues to struggle clearing the puck, or PP sux, our PK looked better after giving up a ya-know-its-coming PP goal, and for the most part Kari was sharp though he gave up his once-a-game softie. and Theratio, nobody’s giving up on this team, our problem is that we all SEE the problems, have seen them for years and are frustrated that the powers that be never fix them. We’re still blue to the core, but want DW, BM and the flippin’ Spirit to do something and not tell us they’ve done it when we see they haven’t. As for the Spirit, would somebody please settle their damned dispute and be done with it? Can’t six dipwads buy out Belkin and put an end to that part of the Norse saga? Hopefully we’ll put on a better show in Tampax Bay tonight. I’ll be watching.

Pucks n Snot - didn’t you read the story? (Hockeytown is dead, they sprinkled red roses over the grave already)[http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071004/COL08/710040439/1048/SPORTS]

LAC - I ask you because you defended Kari, did you really think he was that good? I thought he made some good saves too, and I’m just not sure how weak those goals were. I also thought that point blank shot from the blue line was tipped but I was sitting behind the other net so couldn’t tell. However, if it wasn’t tipped than you have to stop one from that far away with a clear view. Anyone else have thoughts?

Little scored a great goal, and he was out there with Kovy (who in essence created the chance).

Overall, there are still 81 games left. I’m with theratio, don’t give up this soon. And this was still one of the funniest blogs ever (sorry Buzilla, it was).

Michael Shapiro - Couldn’t agree more about getting rid of the dump & chase (that’s what we always called it) on the PP. One thing I specifically noticed was that by the 2nd or 3rd period Enstrom carried the puck in the zone on the PP on one or two chances. So, I think help is on the way in that area.

I thought Enström played very well last night - especially on PP - but guess what a Swedish sport commentator wrote:

Enström did not show the same offensive initiative that he did back home in the Elite League last year.

LAC - He did have a really great save on Ovechkin that I loved. I thought there was no push either. At one point in the 3rd Hossa hit someone and then Kovy came out and hit someone a minute later. I said to my friend that it’s horrible that our finesse players are doing the hitting. They finally showed some life with a hard shift or two in the third, but we need that heart in the first and for 60 minutes.

Welcome back everyone. I see nothing new has changed with this team. STILL cannot pass, cannot control the puck, panic when under pressure and just soft-toss the puck up the boards where there are no friendly players, cannot clear the zone….the list goes on and on. On a positive note, I do like what I see from Enstrom, for the most part. That pass to Kozlov was great. I’m tired of hearing about how the Thrashers have “great” coaching. You have to think that with ten “new” players on this team, and this team still making the same stupid mistakes they made most of last year, that it has to be the coaching, right? Different players, same mistakes. Can’t be a coincidence, can it? I’m not knocking the rookies, mind you. I’m excited to see these guys develop. Just curious how everyone else feels about Hartley? I personally am ready to see him go, although I have no idea who I’d like to see replace him….Just my rambling thoughts after another disappointing loss.

By Jsmooth

October 6, 2007 10:33 PM | Link to this

So much for cautious optimism going into the new season. We’re not a team right now and confusion and tentativeness seem to rule the day. The effort is there from the young kids but Little and Sterling seem to get overwhelmed on the ice by the stronger, savvier veterans of TB. Bob needs to go back to the drawing board and devise a simpler system that caters to our teams strengths (that is if we have any). Okay, that was harsh but other than speed, I can’t think of anything we do particularly well. How many passes from the blueline completely miss the target and bounce down the ice aimlessly? I understand the chip and chase strategy when you are trying to exploit over-aggression by the other team, but at some point you need to figure out a way to establish sustained puck control in the other team’s end.

Oh Lord, they better find something that works fast or else we will be 0-4 before the end of the second week!

Jen, I stand corrected. I knew “X” was on for the 1st two goals vs. Washington, I forgot about the 3rd. And yes, sometimes “X” is out of position while trying to put something on the opposition that AJAX couldn’t take off. But, right now, “X” might be our most physical player.

Enstrom looked tremendous tonight. What a pass to Kozlov. It’s about time Kozlov started the season. What did you make of Moose’s performance tonight?

Shots against totals are through the roof. I kind of … can’t blame our goaltending so far. I don’t think goaltending is the sole or main reason we’re 0-4 in in points this year.

What hurts is … these losses are within the division. While the Capitals are 2-0, with divisional wins. Now, I’m not implying Washington is any kind of “lock” to win the SE division, lest you be confused. But these trends have to stop for Atlanta to claw back to 1st place and stay there.

Nobody is throwing the team under the bus, but we’re at seven (7) straight losses since the 2007 playoffs started. And up next is one of the the best teams in the East (Ottawa). Another regulation-time loss, and we’re 0-6 in points, with 10 of the next 12 on the road.

Has that sunk in? Well, take as much time as you need. And yes, it’s an 82-game season. But a sense of URGENCY is beginning to manifest itself. At some point, the Thrashers have to start winning to take that first step towards repeating atop the division. Which is still possible. Nobody gets eliminated from anything in October. But who wants to climb a mountain instead of a hill? If ya catch my drift.

Rawhide, in the Capitals game, I thought Klee deserved an “assist” on the Erskine goal. You know things are going badly when Erskine is credited with a game-winning goal.

Well, Dany Heatley is the pot of honey that brings out all the Atlanta bees, so I expect a(n Atlanta) spirited effort!

Hartley will be the fall-guy in the attempt to save our sorry GM’s job…The job he’s had since day one of this pathetic franchise…

We’ve picked up right where we left off last year, when it was a sheer debacle in the playoffs.

We’re looking like an expansion team. It’s past time to get rid of our brilliant GM that everyone makes pathetic excuses for…

Accountability. It would be nice if some knew what that meant—including our esteemed beat-writer…

Let’s see, the Oilers, Islanders, and Capitals have two wins, while the Stanley Cup Champion Ducks already have three (3) losses. Remember last year, when the Ducks were 25-2-3 at one point?

What’s next? Hamburgers eating people? Donald Trump and Rosie O’Donnell going out on tour together? Such are the “early returns” of a new season. Things will “even out” by the end of the month.

One thing has sort of flown under the radar. “Do tell! What is it??” Didn’t Craig ask Don Waddell, in his “Q&A” column/blog during the Summer, that he was under the impression that Hartley was on a “one-year” deal? Which is, in my mind, that SAME THING as asking Waddell if Hartley was in the final year of his contract. Okay, “split hairs” on me, why don’tcha? But wasn’t Waddell’s response, “Well (Craig,) your impression would be wrong”? ‘Cuz that’s how I remember it. Someone double-check that.

Anywho, Hartley recently admitted that he was, in fact, in the final year of his contract. Still with me? Well then, what can be taken from Waddell’s testimony, regarding Hartley’s contract? Either (1) he didn’t know. Or (2), he knew and lied.

Which is it? Did you say “choice #1, he didn’t know?” If so, please open your palm, hold it up, and slam your forehead into it profoundly, while exclaiming, “D’oh” in Homer Simpson-like fashion. Waddell writes the coach’s contract! If he doesn’t know, something seriously wrong is going on.

Discuss.

By the way, this Summer’s 1st overall pick, Patrick Kane, from Buffalo, NY, just won the shootout for Chicago over Detroit, by scoring on former Sabres-legend, Dominek Hasek. It was the only goal of the shootout. Also, before the season gets too far along, I hope you all saw Paul Stastny’s “natural hat trick” in the Aves’ Opener a few days ago. The kid looks solid. No sophomore jinx so far.

Correction - I have to correct myself. I found the quote. Here it is: From the June 13, 2007 AJC article, by Craig Custance.

Q: My understanding is that Hartley only has a one-year deal. What message does that send to the players and fans?

A: Your understanding may not be correct. I’m not going to answer that question. We’ve made a decision that all contract status with management and coaches will remain internal. Too much gets made of it. He could have five years, it doesn’t matter any more.

Okay, Waddell never lied. He never denied Hartley was on a 1-year deal. He just wouldn’t “confirm” it. I have “corrected” myself.

I just saw Scott Mellanby on Hockey Night in Canada’s intermission. Also, you may want to peek out your window tomorrow morning for signs of the Four Horsemen of the Coming Apocalypse. Why? Because Niko Kapanen has scored a goal! Okay, he didn’t exactly score it. The puck ricocheted of Bruins netminder Tim Thomas, and deflected into the net off Kapanen’s skate. No distinct motion could be alleged, so the goal stands.

Also, Jon Sim, another former Thrasher, had to leave tonight’s game for the Islanders. I hope he’s okay.
