Hossa update and captain news
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Traverse City — It’s off to the beautiful Flint airport to head back to Atlanta. Before I go, I wanted to offer up a little news and some wrap-up from the prospects tournament. The Thrashers play one more game today, but like Bob Hartley before me, I’m bailing early. Gotta get ready for the real training camp.
The communication between the Thrashers and Marian Hossa’s camp continues in an attempt to get him signed to an extension before the season starts. There hasn’t been a formal offer from the team, but it sounds like they could whip one up real quickly if there are indications from Hossa that he’s ready to sign. All signs point to a possible deal in the four-year range. If he gets Joe Thornton-type money, that would put the total around $28-30 million.
The advantage, from the Thrashers perspective, is that by keeping the contract under five years, GM Don Waddell wouldn’t need unanimous ownership approval. He said ownership would support a 3-4 year deal. From Hossa’s perspective, a four-year deal would mean he’d likely have another big contract in him before he hangs up the skates. We know he’s concerned about winning a Stanley Cup, so keeping a deal under five years would give him a chance to hand-pick a team while still in his early 30s.
“We’ve been talking. We’ve thrown numbers around,” Waddell said after the Thrashers win against Tampa last night. “If they were looking for a formal offer, we would have one quickly. I wouldn’t say we’re at that point yet.”
Expect a captain soon
One of the biggest voids at the upcoming training camp will be the leadership hole created by the retirement of captain Scott Mellanby. Mentally, I’ve already penciled in Bobby Holik in that role, but Waddell said a final decision hasn’t been made.
But expect a captain to be named fairly quickly once camp opens.
“There are some meeting that need to take place with individual players,” Waddell said.
Top three performers
We’ll have a Bryan Little story in the paper for Wednesday, but I wanted to list my top three performers from prospect camp to give you guys an indication of who played well in the three games I attended.
Bryan Little - Despite what the team was saying, I was skeptical that he could make the Thrashers out of training camp. I’m still skeptical, but not as much. He’s a complete player and showed an ability to finish, scoring four goals in the three games I saw. I’m really interested in seeing how he does against NHL-caliber talent.
Spencer Machecek - I liked this kid. He wasn’t afraid to mix it up in front of the net, and it’s no surprise that the three goals I saw all came from the same spot, to the right of the crease. He’s headed back to Vancouver (WHL), but the Thrashers could have done a lot worse with their top pick (third round) in this year’s draft.
Chad Painchaud — You know, I don’t think he scored a goal in any of the games I watched, but it seemed like good things always happened when he was on the ice. He’s ticketed for Chicago (AHL) where I think he could be in for a strong season.
Honorable mention: Tobias Enstrom, Grant Lewis, Riley Holzapfel, Mike Hamilton

Holik, Hossa, Kozlov, Havelid… all good choices. I wouldn’t count out Klee either.
I’m getting pumped looking over the training camp roster… such a deeper talent pool going into camp than years past… should be good competition for the very few spots left.

If we can take Waddell at his word here, then that’s pretty encouraging. I would assume no formal offer means they haven’t got to the $ range that Hossa wants yet, but it’s not like Hossa’s agent is stonewalling Waddell like he has his mind made up that he’s splitting town as soon as this season is over.
This is the most encouraging news yet about Hoss.
Sign him, and give Hoss the C. If they can’t sign him to an extension, it goes to Holik.

From Eklund…
Bruins Trade Imminent from a source, “Boston about to announce a prospect for prospect swap with both players needing a change of scenery.”
This certainly would describe Popovic. Eklund also added Atlanta to the Danny Markov list.

On Boston’s side of that trade, Carl Soderberg sounds like a good candidate for “prospect that needs a change of scenery”… he’s a projected 2nd line Center. Clearly no where near that in the Boston organization.

I think I like Kozlov best for the “C”. He’s under contract for the next three years. It would give some longevity to the position. Holik is a good choice, but he is not under contract past this season.

If Hossa is re-signed, he’s also a great choice for Captain. But, I’m going based of current contracts. That’s why I like Kozlov. He’s hockey smart. The Thrashers could do a lot worse than Kozlov as Captain.

I know your on the road Craig, but any update on what the court ruling means today would be great. Anyone else know? Does this take us back to square 1? Where they value the Spirit and then buy out Belkin? That would be fantastic news. Are we any closer to closure on what is, obviously, the most embarrassing ownership situation in the NBA and NHL. We make Nashville look like a 100 year old family franchise.

Two great things happened today, got my season tix, and most importantly, Belkin got squat.
This is a big win for the Spirit owners. They overturned both rulings, including the ability for Belkin to have the appraisal. This is huge, and it’ll wind up now as it started, the other guys get to buy out Belkin, the only thing left in question now is what they have to pay him for his shares. It’s back to business for the club, unless Belkin decides to be a total dick and appeal the appeal and put injunctions on the rest of the owners to tie their hands. Don’t see why he’d do that as it would only harm his value that he’d receive for his shares as he’d be further damaging the clubs.
All in all, a good day for the club!
The topper would be if they could sign Hoss and then go make some kind of a trade that brings us some much needed center and/or defensive help

YAY!!! BUY OUT BELKIN TOMORROW!!!
GO BLUE !!!
By Brendan
September 11, 2007 5:54 PM | Link to this
What are the odds that this group will know how to successfully buy Belkin out? I mean, that is the crux of the problem. They couldn’t get it right the first time around!
Here’s my whooptido “big idea.” Steve Belkin writes down a number. The Spirit Group either accepts it, or they counter offer. They do this 1,000 more times until a mutually acceptable number is reached. Then someone writes a check to Mr. Belkin.
No good?
How about Belkin states his number. The Spirit state their number. And split the difference in half … and thennnn write a check. Then it’s done. It’s over. It’s finally, finally, finally OVER.
But something tells me … this is still all about Belkin wanting to own the Hawks. Well, put a “for sale” sign on the door and if Belkin can pony up the money, the team is his, which is what I suspect he really wants. Now, I don’t believe Belkin, alone, can buy the Hawks. And would the Spirit Group really want to sell them, anyway? If they did, they still have the Thrashers, so they can tell anyone waiting for the bus, and who will listen, that they’re still a pro sports team owner.
Naw, too complicated? I took a shot.

Did Jim Balsillie just offer something absurd like $239,000,000 to buy and relocate the Nashville Predators? Tampa just sold its team for a tidy sum. Edmonton’s Oilers were nearly bought this Summer. Wes Goldstein (CBS.Sportsline.com/nhl) just recently wrote an article on how and why these ridiculous offers keep getting made, despite a fair market value at a considerably lower price.

I also cant see giving the C to Holik as he doesnt have a long term contract with the team. If we ink something with Hossa to extend him he is the obvious choice. Without the extension I dont think you can give him the C because he will likely be moved at the deadline. I like Kozlov for the C but I dont know that he would want it. Slava is a quiet guy with the media and doesnt stike me as a big presense in the locker room either. Though he could lead by example. I dont know how Klee’s name got thrown in the mix but why not Zhitnik.

I may be looking at too much blue sky, but I agree with Hokie, the roster going into camp is probably the best we’ve had depth-wise. Yeah, a proven center would be nice but no need to panic yet, one can always come later.
Why the outcry for more defensemen? I think the D is vastly improved over last year (can’t wait to see Hossa blow by Sutton) and everybody is crying about the youngsters not getting a chance. Why do we need a Markov?
Brendan, the only thing wrong with your split ownership idea is who gets the ownership of Philips? That is probably the real carrot anyway, who in their right mind would WANT to own the Hawks? And the Thrashers will never be more than break-even at best. The arena is the real money-maker.
Also, got the season tix yesterday…sweet!

Aren’t season tix holders supposed to get a media guide also? I whine a lot about the perks they offer for new season ticket plans that those of us who bought them earlier miss out on (now they are currently running a promotion to get some signed Kovalchuk stuff).
Also, I have sent 2 emails to my account rep with no reply. Last year when I had a 6 game plan the ticket rep was REALLY helpful and always responded quickly. Unfortunately he left and the current rep stinks.

Zilla, my box was empty also, except for the tix and the letter. As I recall, we get the media guide really late, like 1/2 way through the season.
I wouldn’t worry about signing up just to get All Star game tix, last year in Dallas they were going for 1/2 price day of game on eBay and over 100 available for sale. And that wasn’t solely because it was mid-week, you’ll get All Star tix if you want them, at below face value.

As far as the few people b*** about Holik’s play vs pay and his deserving of the captaincy. I am not going to sit here and say that Holik is not overpaid, because he is. He is probably getting double what he should. That being said he is THE ideal canadate to be the captain of this team.
First of all, he has two Stanley Cups. Twice as many as Slava. Second of all, he is extremely vocal. He isn’t afraid to get in someone’s face if they are playing like sh*t. I doubt the same could be said for Hossa or Slava givin there fairly laid back attitude. Third of all is his play. He isn’t the goal scorer we all hoped he would be but Waddell signed him before the rules changed and his offence effectiveness was reduced. The other reason we signed him was to be a shut down center, be king of the faceoff circle, and rattle some fake teeth off the boards. He has done all of these. I would also like to remind you of the goal he scored from his @ss. He is one of the few who showed up in the playoffs as well.
I doubt if Hossa or Kozlov even want the “C”, but I bet you that Holik REALLY wants it. And he deserves it.

Actually, Buzilla, Kozzie does have 2 Cup Championships on his resume. But I also highly doubt he would want to wear the “C” - I suspect he’s content with an “A.” If DW can get Hossa signed to an extension, he’s definitely my choice. Otherwise, I guess Holik will be the guy although I am really really really really tired of a new captain every season (virtually).
As for the court drama - this is great news for Thrasher fans. I’ve been having nightmares of Belkin buying the team, parting it out, and selling off what’s left to anybody but the rest of Spirit. ugh
By Buzilla Baby Blues
September 12, 2007 12:08 PM | Link to this
you are correct Sara.
But since Bobby and the Devils swept the Red Wings in 94-95 I thought it should count twice ;)
Hossa I doubt would want the C for the same reason as Kozlov. I can’t see him getting in anyones face. Holik has an intimidation factor that no one else on the team has. He is huge, looks like Frankenstein, and he looks like he would spit alot when he speaks.
Besides who is to say we don’t sign Holik again? (For a proper amount this time)

Don’t the players vote on the captaincy? Or, is that a team by team decision?
I think the only real choices are Holik, Kozlov, and Hossa. I agree Holik would be the better of the those three. Give Kozlov and Hossa an A.
The extreme choice (as someone pointed out a month or two back) would be Kovalchuk. Not so much that he has demonstrated captain qualities in the past, but maybe it would be a kick in the pants to make him more responsible and mature. Contract status-wise he would be a safe bet. Again, that is extreme.
By Buzilla Baby Blues
September 12, 2007 12:37 PM | Link to this
I don’t agree that you name Kovalchuk captain to make him more responsible. I think you reward him once he becomes responsible with the “C”.
His kick in the pants this year will be that he isn’t the main guy anymore. Hossa is. The crowds cheer Hossa’s name. Not his. He is going to try to have a monster season so he will be loved by the fans above all others on the team, and mentioned again as one of the giants in the league. He don’t like being second fiddle and he won’t be for long.

The new sweaters are TERRIBLE. The road whites have a ridiculous white stripe in the middle of the blue shoulder / arm stripes. The vertical stripes on either side of the logo are silly looking and the dark blue panels on the home blues look silly. The team needs to drop the logo and go with just the “head” logo…much more clean and simple. Not this monstrocity. Back in my college days I froze at many a Bills game in November. They definitely won’t have to worry about keeping the ice frozen. It was somebody’s bright idea to build the stadium with an open end (the direction of Lake Erie) and put the upper level basically at ground level. It gets really nasty with the wind blowing in.

That makes too much sense Buzzilla…it’d be like reading the nuances of a court decision before your opponent exercises his option to buy your group out. Why would you do that when you could actually just sit back, relax, and not care??
Sarcasm aside though, I agree with you. Though it’s nice to think that the team would care what we think about the uniforms, I just don’t see it from any of the NHL teams thus far.
Look at the new Vancouver “uniform”. It’s an amalgamation of several different uniforms that, when combined, make one super uniform. It’s like a Power Ranger jersey with the word “Vancouver” written across it.

That outdoor game in Buffalo could get “snowed out.” Still, I’d bet it draws well from Western Pennsylvania, Western New York, and Southern Ontario. A game like that only comes along once every so often. Can’t pass it up, if you live in the area and are a serious hockey fan.
I see Wes Goldstein still “stirring it up” about the sale of the Predators and where they rank in the Central division. Hey Wes, “They’re not moving to Canada. Give … it … up!”
I rewatched games 1, 2 and 4 of the Thrashers vs. the Rangers this weekend. I hate to say it, Bobby Holik was our best player. And Larsen and Dupuis didn’t play badly, either. We were outcoached, even on home ice. Still, there was potential to win both those games. If Kozlov’s shot goes in with 0:02 left on the clock, who knows what happens in overtime, in Game One.

Well, here’s a link to the new Thrashers uniforms that I hope works for ya’ll.
I don’t mean to turn this into a fashion show, but I thought, by far, the worst-looking of the new uniforms across the league were the NY Islanders. Followed by the Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers, Columbus Blue Jackets and Vancouver Canucks. Didn’t much care for the home (dark colored) jerseys of the Aves, Bruins, Oilers, or ‘Canes.
On my kudos list were the Penguins, home and road, and the Flames, home and road. I liked the home and road for Sabres (minus the mullet logo), and the Bruins home jersey. Kinda liked the Lightning (white) road jersey, along with the road jerseys of the Sens, Rangers, Aves, Blackhawks, Devils and Wild. I can’t make up my mind on the Sharks home or road.
Ranallo, those L.A. King unis don’t look bad at all. (Discounting the new “style” of form-fitting jerseys.) I kinda like the home jersey. Road white isn’t bad, either. The site says white = road jersey. Stay tuned. It’s still, to this day, hard for me to think of white as not being the “home” color. As in, “good guys” wear white.
As for the Thrashers unis, I’ll buy a new one when they make one I like. Which they haven’t, for a while now. I still think the Inaugural season home white and “Ultimate Warrior” navy were the best uniforms the Thrashers ever had. Those are two I own. I can’t see the shoulder patch on these new uniforms at that site, however.

Oh, come on…the Thrashers “bacardi bat” logoed blue jerseys were terrible!

check them out on the team site they look just fine to me. That’s the best our white sweater has ever looked, it’s a definite improvement, and the blue looks pretty much the same. Not the drastic change I was worried about, let’s drop the puck and get it on.

The Ultimate Warrior is the only jersey that I will recognize as a Thrasher jersey.
I would embrace the blue jersey if they used the Warrior logo on the front and got ride of the horrible mesh under the pits. I like the unique “Atlanta” down the sleave. I just don’t like that big awkward birdarm thing. It is retarded.

One thing I’ve noticed with the entire league’s new jerseys is that Reebok made all the colors brighter… or, what the fashion industry might call, “Flare” so to speak.
The white jersey is growing on me, but the blue jersey seems a little cartoony to me.

I think we are all in agreement that the “plain” birdhead logo would be superior to the birdhead+stick w/swirl logo we currently have…but the laces on the front and Atlanta down the arm are definitely cool…I too would love to see the Ultimate Warrior/Batman/Styleized T logo on the front of the Blueland sweater…
How much are they charging for those things anyway???
GO BLUE !!!

Bob, you’re right. I’m “warming up” to this new white jersey. Thanks the for the link. It’s a lot better than the one I provided. I can see it better on your link. It’ll be allright. I think people will wind up liking it after all.
Tony C. is right, the pucks drops soon. But before it does, we raise the Southeast Division banner. That will be nice, in spite of the playoff sweep. I hear the Georgia Force is moving back to Gwinnett. Maybe all their stuff hanging around Philips will be coming down soon? It frees up for space for Thrashers achievements!!

Is it just me or is everyone just assuming that Belkin is the bad guy?
